Santa Barbara Whale Watching, Sunset Cruises, and Coastal Boat Tours FAQs

Some of our most commonly asked questions. If you have something specific, get in touch!

What marine life can I expect to see on ocean tours?

The Channel Islands are referred to as the Galapagos of North America!  Our channel is home to humpback whales, seals, sea lions, and many species of dolphins. Seasonally we see blue whales, Orcas, and migrating grey whales. There are always a large variety of sea birds both resident and migratory. We see sharks of many varieties including spotted, lemon, and great white. There is no telling what nature will bring.

“Captain Garrick is incredibly knowledgeable, skilled and accommodating. He gave us a magical tour of the islands on a perfect day out on the channel. His experience on boats and as a spear fisherman showed in his amazing stories, local knowledge of the islands and its wildlife, and in his smooth demeanor. And such good pricing! Would highly recommend chartering him.”

“we had the best time on garrick’s boat he is the best captain, making everyone feel comfortable and at ease. he seems to have a direct line of communication with the whales, dolphins and sharks, leading us directly to them. most of all though, his warm personality and humor made it one of the best days of my summer. i’ve taken many boat tours over the years and this is one i will never forget thank you so much for such an unforgettable experience.”, about sb boat charters.

Lil Toot Santa Barbara

Lil' Toot Santa Barbara

The happiest boat in the harbor, our featured santa barbara boat tours, public cruises.

Lil’ Toot, Santa Barbara’s original waterfront taxi, provides 25-minute narrated public boat rides between the Harbor and Stearns Wharf every hour.

Private Charters

Celebrate in style with Lil’ Toot! Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, or any special occasion, our charming vessel offers an intimate and unique setting for your event.

Our Guests LOVE Lil' Toot!

a drawing of a face

I wish there were more stars to give. We went on the Lil Toot yesterday and took a 25-minute harbor cruise for $10 each. It was a guided tour so we learned a lot of interesting facts about the harbor. The staff was friendly and even had some jokes. We saw Sea Lions, birds and a spotted seal. The ride was nice and the girl was very knowledgeable. Such a great cruise at such a great price. I highly recommend!!

logo

We had a great time on the Lil' Toot!! We reserved a 1-hour private charter around the harbor and the staff and experience was perfect. I highly recommend to anyone who might want to just have a very relaxing time to hangout with friends and family. The staff was very accommodating and very helpful from the moment we booked to the day of the actual trip. Thank you all again!!

After finding out that you could charter the Lil' Toot for kids' birthday parties, I was so excited. I catered the Lil' Toot for my little girl's 2 year birthday celebration and invited friends and family to join us. I arranged for some of my own food and drink and did a small catering order from Crush Cakes to serve. The boat ride was excellent (saw lots of animals!) and the kids even got to drive the boat for a few minutes (and toot the horn!). Everyone had such a great time. The best part for me was picking up what was left of our food and drink and exiting the boat and being "DONE!" The Captain and crew were both excellent hosts. Super fun, highly recommend this service.

We had a wonderful time on Lil Toot! Both the captain and mate were superb. We’ll take all of our smallest MN visitors out for a cruise from now on. TOOT TOOT!

We love the "Lil Toot"! We take it every time we're in SB and it never gets old! It's a fun and easy way to get to the pier from the Harbor & back, especially during the summer when there is limited parking on the pier. The crew is friendly & professional & the fare is reasonable! I highly recommend taking a ride and enjoy seeing the Sea Lions and a tour of the amazing harbor!

This is the best way to see Rome. This is my second visit and I saw so much more of the city. The tour information was interesting and fun. The gelato was amazing. They thought of every detail to make this enjoyable in the heat. They had water and even altered the route to keep us more in the shade. They took such good care of me and my mother. They made sure we were safe getting in and out of the sidecar. Best tour I booked in Rome. They truly care about you and were kind and thoughtful! I could keep going on and on!

HORRIBLE company! It is impossible to get a hold of anyone. They mess up times, book wrong times, WILL NEVER reply back to you. I had to contact them almost 10 times for their error and they acknowledged they received the message but will never correct the issue or contact you again. Avoid this place!!

We booked trip to Santa Barbara but had to cancel a few weeks before event. I purchased through GroupOn and they refunded my money immediately. Unfortunately I had to book using redeem code through sidecar tours. Well, they charged me about $60 for gratuity fees for the two wineries, I called them for a few weeks every single day and never got a hold of anyone so that I can get a refund of the service I was not going to use.. I also emailed and never received a response or anything. The day of the event which had been canceled weeks before they called me to reschedule me from Saturday to Sunday, I am so glad that this got canceled because that would've ruined all our plans as we were leaving early Sunday. The fact that they never responded to refund me $60 and that they still rescheduled event even though it had been canceled just shows how unprofessional this company is, will never deal with this company ever.

Photo of Cindi T.

Company canceled the trip in Santa Barbara one hour before our scheduled time. We stopped by the address where we were to meet them and were told that the company cancels all the time. We were originally told it would take 48-72 hours to get the refund. We're at 288+ hours right now, and the company ignores our calls, texts, and emails. UPDATE: After WE contacted the third party, we were told that a refund had never been initiated by the company. But the company told us they had initiated the refund two different times. The third party confirmed that the company had cancelled, and we got the refund in a day. So, beware that if (and, more likely, when) the company cancels on you, you will have to fight for the refund.

Photo of Gabrielle B.

UPDATE: COMPANY STILL HAS YET TO GIVE ME A REFUND, I called several times over the last few weeks and was told i have to request refund through groupon and they would approve refund, groupon contacted me today saying Sidecar wine tours has not approved my refund and would like me to rebook. I have no desire to use a service when i flew into town for a scheduled tour and received NO CORRESPONDENCE AND THE COMPANY JUST DIDNT SHOW UP! And now almost a month later has yet to give me my money back. Planned a special valentines day gift for my partner, Called in the morning to confirm or reschedule, but got no answer or response. Figured we were ok because we had a confirmation and received no correspondence to say our tour was canceled as communicated in the confirmation email. Showed up 15 mins early as told, and waited an additional 45 minutes after our scheduled time. No one ever showed up or communicated to say tour was cancelled. Drive 2hrs away for nothing. No respect for patrons after charging nearly 500 for this tour the least they could do is communicate when there are changes. DO NOT WASTE UR TIME OR MONEY

Gabrielle, we are truly sorry to hear about your disappointing experience on Valentine's Day. We understand the importance of special occasions and we apologize for the lack of communication. Your feedback is valuable to us and we hope to have another chance to show you the experience you deserve.

Reply to the owner. Unfortunately, I could not complete purchase/ reservation until the $60 charge was selected. I tried multiple times without it going through. Other than that, again, the trip was very memorable and I highly recommend this adventure.

Hey Christine! Thank you for the review! I am sorry we are responding late, but I would love to clear up some of the charges you incurred! Our Groupon tour is a cheaper rate, as it is a bit of a shorter trip and does not include a final tasting. All tours booked on our website include 3 total tastings and a further distance of travel! The $60 charge you got hit with is an OPTIONAL selection when booking and it all goes directly to the winery and brewery staff. We added this option so that guests are able to "pre-tip' as all the tastings are included in price, you do not have the ability to tip them without the use of cash! We know that the hospitality industry is filled with annoying tip charges so that is why we make sure everything is optional. Our drivers are known to do an amazing job and tips are greatly appreciated. They are often known to get more than the industry standard because of the 'above and beyond' service they are accustom to! It is not our goal to 'stiff' our employees and we value their dedication to the cities they know best, and to safety and excellence of every tour! Thank you for touring with us and we hope to see you again soon!

I dropped a star (was debating on 2) for the "nickel and dimming" the company does. The actual ride itself, and the driver Travis was amazing... a 5 star service! He was very friendly and very knowledgeable about Santa Barbara. The ride was very memorable and such a fun way to see the city. Knowing what to expect with the extra charges from the company, I would do this again and recommend this adventure. On Groupon (very reasonable pricing) and the website, the wine tour says the tasting is included. When I went to the website to reserve, I was hit with another $60 charge. I think for winery tips? I'm not quite sure. Then, a text about the meeting information and waiver ended with, "If you enjoy the service, gratuity is appreciated (the gratuity paid online goes to booking staff)." I am fine and agree with tipping for a service.. but the company charging for tips ahead of time, then stiffing their own employee and have them ask for tips... very unsavory.

Human poop inside the sidecar. Absolutely disgusting. I didn't touch it but it was verified by the smell. Told the owner and he won't even refund me. These guys don't know how to run a business let alone clean a bike

My boyfriend and I booked the scenic tour with David and he was super fun and willing to customize our experience. We like anything unique to the area so he took us to the ritzy Montecito area for the breathtaking views, felt the wooden parking lot of the piers, the courthouse, mission and told us the history of the area. It was a bit misty and foggy reminiscent of our home - the Bay Area but it didn't stop any of us from enjoying the ride. We discovered a couple of beaches I had heard about but haven't seen up close so we stopped there to walk around for a little bit to take in the atmosphere. If you don't mind people gawking, smiling and taking photos of you - this is a fun thing to do at least once. It reminds me of the time my friend took me on his vespa for a scooter rally and people were snapping photos along the way. David was super accommodating, communicative and arrived right on time. When you meet him, park around the block where there is no parking time limit. The area near the winery location has a 1.5 hour time limit. We also booked the first morning ride so there was more parking than later in the afternoon.

This was my first time in Santa Barbara and we wanted to do some type of tour around the city. This tour was awesome! Our tour guide was Travis and he picked us up from our hotel, I believe it was near the pickup spot so he just decided to grab us, which was so nice by the way. The tour took us around Santa Barbara and to two wineries. Travis was nice and knowledgeable. He also took pictures of us with his iphone and air dropped it to us! Just a suggestion for the company, maybe have the tour guides have professional cameras so we can have quality pics of the tour? it would be great!! Other than that, we loved the tour so much, it was very memorable and I would definitely do this again.

Hey Gabrielle! Thank you so much for touring with us! We love hearing that you chose us for your first time in Santa Barbara, and love hearing that Travis was able to show you an amazing time! We do have GoPros' at all locations and we often use those to capture amazing photo and video content! Please reach out on your next tour and we can get that going for you!!

We had a fabulous time on our weekend sidecar tour in SB. The weather was perfect and our guide Robert C. was excellent. He was very knowledgeable, funny, and nice. Even as locals we had a blast on this tour around town. Robert took pictures of us in front of some great photo op locations such as the Mission and Couthouse. Would highly recommend this as a fun local date or touristy activity for people from out of town.

We stopped at Butterfly Beach.

Lake Fire spreads to more than 12,000 acres in Santa Barbara County, prompting evacuation warnings

KABC logo

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- A wildfire that began late Friday afternoon in Santa Barbara County has spread to more than 12,000 acres Saturday, prompting an evacuation warning, officials said.

The so-called Lake Fire began at 3:48 p.m. in the area of Santa Lucia Road, near Zaca Lake in the Los Padres National Forest, according to Cal Fire. No injuries or structural damage were reported.

Evacuation warnings were issued for Figueroa Mountain Road stretching from the Forest Station to Chamberlin Ranch, and north of Zaca Lake Road, east of Foxen Canyon Road and south of the Sisquoc River.

Sheltering support information is available by calling (805) 678-3073. Assistance with the evacuation of large animals is available from Santa Barbara County Animal Services, by calling (805) 698-0212 or signing up online .

Shortly after 11 a.m. Saturday, the Santa Barbara Air Pollution Control District noted that a massive column of smoke from the fire was visible throughout the area, adding that ground-level air quality conditions were currently good to moderate.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.

Shirtless Rob Lowe, 60, Shows Off Impressive Physique While Celebrating July 4th on a Boat With His Sons: Photos

Festive family fun!

Rob Lowe spent Independence Day with his sons and some friends, with photographers capturing the shirtless actor cruising around on boat in Santa Barbara, Calif.

In the pictures, the ageless dad-of-two, went shirtless as he jumped into the water from the boat's ledge.

His and wife Sheryl Berkoff 's two sons, Matthew Edward , 31, and John Owen , 29, were also seen, though the latter's rumored girlfriend, Lucy Hale , wasn't pictured.

Season 2 of Rob and John Owen's Netflix show, Unstable , debuts on Thursday, August 1.

"Early response to the second season of Unstable has been fantastic, and we are excited to share our official trailer with Variety ," Rob wrote when the video was released this month. "As you will see, it contains some very good comedy and even better hair."

The patriarch revealed last year that it was "a dream come true, to be able to work with my son."

"To have him create something with [producer] Victor [ Fresco ].... And the way it's being received? That's the thing! It was fun to do, we love it, but you never know [how it's going to go over], and the reaction has been more than I ever could of hoped," the Parks and Recreation alum gushed.

When asked whether his son inherited his talents, Rob replied, "He's got good comic timing and hopefully he's picking up some other good things from me."

While speaking to a reporter, John Owen insisted that their sarcastic nature easily transferred to the screen.

"It’s not a bit, I swear to god it’s not a bit, and it’s really important to me that you know that. I see it at home and I think to myself, ‘OK, this has crossed a threshold. People think this is a bit.’ I’ve been doing this since social media wasn’t a thing," he spilled.

There's also endless pranking on set.

"I love a good joke, even if it’s at my expense," the West Wing star admitted. "When I was roasted on Comedy Central, it was a highlight and it was mean. I love a good give and take and he has a very good facility for it."

His son said that pulling pranks his way of showing "love and it’s how I keep him humble."

Judith Mary Hawkins

Date of Birth

May 2, 1939

Date of Death

July 3, 2024

City of Death

Santa Barbara, CA

Judith Hawkins Writer passed away after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease on July 3rd, 2024. Born to Frederick and Betty Hawkins on May 2nd, 1939 in Oak Park, Illinois, she graduated from Oak Park High School where her nickname was “Practical Hawkins”. Drawn to the mountains and blue skies of Colorado, she thrived at the University of Colorado with a degree in History in 1961. Spotted swimming laps in a Denver pool, George Writer recognized a catch; they were married for nearly 60 years, raising 5 kids. Passionate about everything the natural world offered, she was always outside cultivating her garden, hiking through wildflowers and skiing the fresh powder. Judy was an incredible horse woman who loved the thrill of cross country jumping. Gladly giving of her time, she was an invaluable asset to both friends and the many organizations that benefited from her singular practicality.

For a span of thirty years in Denver, Judy shared her gift of home décor as an interior designer for the Writer Corporation, one of the more successful and innovative homebuilders along the Colorado’s Front Range. Her intuitive insights contributed to the success of the Writer Corporation. While the headquarters of the Writer Corporation was located on Inverness Drive, the kitchen table in their home was a place where floor plans received serious scrutiny.

George and Judy moved to Santa Barbara in 2002 and immediately became involved in the Santa Barbara Community. She was an English language tutor for the Santa Barbara Library. She volunteered for years at the County Dog Shelter where she adopted Bert and Ernie. She served as President of CAMA Women’s Board for three years and led the popular CAMA garden tours and later served on the CAMA Board. She also served on the Research Committee for the Santa Barbara Women’s Fund.

Judy sailed aboard Resolution with George and had a special knack for docking the boat, a skill acquired from years of maneuvering a horse trailer. Despite all of her interests, her primary focus was always her family, willing to listen and support all through insight and profound advice. She enjoyed bridge and book club with her many friends. Judy’s philanthropic focus was primarily on the natural world. She is survived by her husband, George, her children, Wendy, husband Ken and daughter Hannah, Rebecca and son Graham, daughter Meera, Jeff and Eney, Andrea and son Max and daughter Quincey, Katie and daughter Wren and son Jasper, and 6 great grandchildren and faithful dog Ernie. Judy had a heart of gold and will always be deeply loved, cherished and missed by her family and many friends.

Some Caribbean islands see almost 'total destruction' after Hurricane Beryl

yacht tour santa barbara

A more complete picture emerged Wednesday of the extensive damage wrought by Hurricane Beryl's trek across the Windward Islands, revealing destruction and at least seven deaths.

At least three islands report more than 90% of the homes and buildings either destroyed or severely damaged, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency reported Wednesday . All three are within the chain of Grenadine Islands, where Beryl roared into the Caribbean on the southern end of the Windwards, between St. Vincent and Grenada.

With 19 participating states across the Caribbean , the agency was helping coordinate disaster response on Grenada and St. Vincent and the Grenadines even as it continued to track Beryl’s movements across Jamaica, Cayman Islands and Belize. The eye of Beryl, still a Category 4 storm, raked Jamaica's coast Wednesday afternoon and was expected to pass near the Cayman Islands Thursday morning, before making landfall in the Yucatan on Friday morning.

The damage estimates for the Windwards – where Beryl made landfall over Carriacou – are only "a very preliminary look," said Elizabeth Riley, the disaster management agency's executive director. Beryl struck the islands with sustained winds of 150 mph and higher gusts on Monday, and the National Hurricane Center had warned that winds could be up to 30% higher on the tops of hills and mountains.

The impacts to the Grenadine Islands are "quite significant," Riley said, leaving residents exposed and vulnerable. Even as recovery efforts began, a tropical wave brought rain and gusty winds Wednesday to the suffering residents.

Grenada prime minister discusses damage on Carriacou

In a briefing late Tuesday after spending more than two hours in a helicopter provided by the government of St. Lucia, Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell described "total destruction" on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

"There's really nothing that can prepare you to see this level of destruction," Mitchell said. "It is almost Armageddon-like, almost total damage and destruction of all buildings. Complete devastation and destruction of agriculture. Complete and total destruction of the natural environment."

"There is literally no vegetation left anywhere on the island of Carriacou; the mangroves are totally destroyed, the boats and the marinas significantly damaged," he said. "There is almost complete destruction of the electrical grid system in Carriacou. The entire communication system is completely destroyed."

However, Mitchell added, he'd been heartened by the volunteers "showing true Grenadian spirit" by arriving from other less damaged areas in boats and fishing vessels to begin delivering relief supplies to those affected.

Hurricane Beryl's fearsome seas As Beryl tears through Caribbean, a drone sends back stunning footage

Beryl damage updates

The following are the preliminary assessments Riley listed:

Carriacou, Grenada

  • The total population of 6,081 has been affected, so shelter is "a significant consideration."
  • Majority of homes and buildings have been extensively damaged
  • Communications have been significantly compromised

Petite Martinique, Grenada

  • Estimated 80% of the houses and buildings extensively damaged or destroyed
  • 900 people affected
  • Majority of the island is sheltering in place

Canouan, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • 100% of the island's population (12,600) has been affected
  • An estimated 90% of the houses were damaged, either extensively or destroyed
  • Police station in Charlestown lost its roof

Union Island, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

  • Full population of 3,000 was affected by extensive damage
  • Estimated 98% of buildings, including houses badly damaged or destroyed
  • Airport control tower destroyed, hospital roof destroyed

Fishing boat carrying 283 migrants to Europe safely reaches southern Greek island

yacht tour santa barbara

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Greek authorities say a fishing boat carrying nearly 300 migrants to Europe has safely reached a southern island after a large rescue operation in the Mediterranean Sea. There are no immediate reports of injury or ill health among the 283 migrants. A coast guard statement says a search was launched before dawn Monday after authorities were notified that a vessel carrying migrants was hit by strong winds south of Crete. The fishing boat was finally able to reach the port of Gavdos under its own engines, and the migrants safely disembarked. Tiny Gavdos has become a major destination for migrant vessels crossing the Mediterranean from eastern Libya.
