Time

Are you ready for the trip of a lifetime? Cruising in the Kimberley serves up eye-popping beauty at every turn.

A rarely visited, ancient and pristine coastline, this slice of Western Australia is often referred to as one of the world’s last great wilderness areas. It’s a wonderland of secret waterfalls, rare birds and confetti-like islands.

Accessible by boat from Broome, Wyndham (via Kununurra) Darwin and Cygnet Bay Pearl Farm on the Dampier Peninsula, the epic journey is worth the effort . Whether you’re seeking a sophisticated atmosphere with butler service or an action-packed activity focused itinerary , there are a bunch of excellent Kimberley cruises out there.

1. The Great Escape Charter Company

Family-owned and run,  The Great Escape Charter Company  has a custom-built 26-metre luxury catamaran, MV Great Escape , which caters to just 14 lucky guests across seven stylish staterooms.

Kimberley Ultimate 13 day cruise itinerary map

13 Night Kimberley Ultimate Wyndham to Broome

Wyndham – Broome Itinerary

For 30 years the TRUE NORTH’s flagship adventure has been the Kimberley Ultimate!

The Ultimate is simply two weeks of lavish indulgence.

All of the Kimberley coast’s iconic attractions are included plus much, much, more and, all is enjoyed at a leisurely pace that ends with guests frequently remarking “that’s the best holiday I have ever had!” If you want not one heli-picnic but two – if you want more time for exploring, more time for fishing and, twice as many mouth-watering dining experiences – then the Kimberley Ultimate is the right TRUE NORTH adventure for you!

Please note: This itinerary is provided as example only – prevailing conditions, local arrangements and indeed, what we discover on the day, may cause variation. Helicopter flights can be purchased additional to the indicated tariff as a package or individually.

Night One – Welcome Aboard

Join our coach transfer in Kununurra – your “welcome aboard” the magnificent TRUE NORTH will be in the frontier town of Wyndham. Embarkation is at 1700 – time for a cocktail with your fellow adventurers before departing at approximately 1830. Dinner is served shortly after leaving port and then it’s an overnight cruise to the King George River.

Day One The King George Falls

As soon as the tide is high enough, we’ll cross the sand bar at the mouth of the mighty King George to reveal a breathtaking river vista. Our journey upstream will take us to the very ‘jewel in the crown’ – The King George Falls. Here we anchor at the base of the Twin Falls and you will find endless places to explore. Take the helicopter to the top of the falls for a Kimberley highlight. In the afternoon learn about the history of the wreck of the Koolama and take a stroll at Tranquil Bay.

Day Two – The Drysdale

Explore the Drysdale and catch one of our favourite fish, the impressive mangrove jack! The adventure boats will then head “up-river” for scones and billy tea – a signature TRUE NORTH experience! There will also be an opportunity to indulge in some beachcombing and, in the afternoon the ship’s helicopter will visit the remote community of Kalumburu.

Day Three – Eagle Falls

Today you will see the “Bradshaws” – ancient rock art that pre-dates other examples of Aboriginal culture. In fact, they are possibly the oldest ‘paintings’ known to man. The heli-picnic at Eagle Falls is always a ‘big hit’ – a breathtaking helicopter flight and, the TRUE NORTH’s mouth-watering fare alongside a picture-perfect waterfall! Vansittart Bay also has a reputation for producing monster mackerel and the adventure boats will also be busy exploring the local beaches and creeks.

Day Four The Mitchel River

The Mitchell River is renowned for big barra and even bigger crocs! The adventure boats will head up river to scenic Surveyors Creek – a great place for a swim (no crocs here!) The fishermen will again join the hunt for the elusive barramundi and there will be more opportunities for helicopter flights over ancient land including the spectacular Mitchell Falls!

Then join us for our pearl and diamond party! Enjoy a glass of bubbly whilst trying on exquisite pieces created by the artistes at Allure, Jewels of the Kimberley and Kimberley Fine Diamonds.

Day Five – Swift Bay

Wake up in the stunning turquoise waters of Swift Bay. No time to dally – after an early morning breakfast it’s time to join the ‘hunt for the black-lip oyster’. In fact – their much-talked about proportions render them not hard to find at all! Savour their unique taste direct from the rock – aside from some freshly squeezed lemon, you can’t get much more a la naturale than that! There are also some excellent examples of both Wandjina and Bradshaw art nearby and the waters are alive with light game species such as queenfish, giant trevally and mackerel. Join the crew for a walk through a rock art gallery, followed by sunset drinks on the picturesque Winyalkin Island. Enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres from our chefs and watch the sun descend on another action packed day in the Kimberley!

Day Six – The Roe River

The Roe River – another great opportunity to catch a barra as we explore a river that boasts one of the highest crocodile counts in the Kimberley! The Roe was named after the first Surveyor-General of Western Australia – John Septimus Roe conducted numerous expeditions along the Kimberley coast between 1829 and 1849 and the ship’s helicopter will dramatically demonstrate the maze of creeks and endless coast that the early explorers encountered! In the afternoon we will sail into Prince Frederick Harbour to visit a Wandjina art site on the aptly named Art Island! And the heli will be available to perch on one of the Kimberley’s highest peaks – sunset over Prince Frederick Harbour (accompanied by cheese and bubbles no doubt!)

Day Seven – The Hunter River

Wake this morning in the magnificent Hunter River. The Hunter is about as far away as you can get in Australia – a stunning river system that is lined with dense mangrove forests and surrounded by rainforest encrusted mountains. And, the Hunter has it all – fishing, mud-crabbing, bird-watching and simply exploring “where few have been before!” Join one of our adventure boats for a closer look, it’s only a short hike, enjoy a challenging hike to Jackson Falls and, there’s even more splendour from the helicopter! In the afternoon we will sail into Prince Frederick harbour and enjoy sunset drinks on picturesque Crystal Beach, enjoy some delicious hors d’oeuvres and watch the sun descend on another action packed day in the Kimberley!

Day Eight – The Prince Regent

In the heart of the Kimberley lies the mighty Prince Regent! The scenery will astound and there will be some ‘not to be missed’ fishing action as the TRUE NORTH graces this majestic river!

At King Cascade we will manoeuvre the TRUE NORTH right under the falls before another breathtaking helicopter flight to a picnic that you’ll never forget – our chefs will prepare more of their destination-inspired dishes alongside a crystal clear billabong – in one of the most remote places on earth! The helicopter will also be popular when the first group of intrepid explorers returns from Jurassic Park! Then we’ll re-join the TRUE NORTH for an overnight anchorage off Camp Creek.

Day Nine – Champagne Sunrise

The early-risers will be treated to a heli-flight with a difference – a champagne sunrise on the top of a mountain! The sightseeing tenders will explore Camp Creek before another breathtaking helicopter flight to a picnic that you’ll never forget – our chefs will prepare more of their destination-inspired dishes alongside a crystal-clear billabong – in one of the most remote places on earth! The helicopter will take to the skies once again, this time to land at several remote rock art sites. Accessible only by helicopter, these ancient art galleries will simply leave you in awe.

Day Ten – Montgomery Reef

Start the day with some more hot fishing action – this time at “Three Ways”. Join crew and guests alike for a moderate walk to Ruby Falls and be rewarded with a refreshing swim in the large natural rock pool. Enjoy lunch as we weigh anchor and set sail for another Kimberley icon – Montgomery Reef! Montgomery is a unique ecosystem that must be seen to be believed – and see it you will – as 140 square miles of coral reef rises out of the ocean right before your very eyes! Water cascades from the reef as the tide falls exposing a privileged glimpse of another world! Turtles, dugong, crocodiles and every imaginable sea creature abound and the helicopter puts all in perspective!

Day Eleven – Kingfisher Islands

The adventure boats will be away early for another ‘crack at the fish!’ Trolling around the Kingfisher Islands reliably produces hefty pelagics such as armwrenching trevally and lure smashing mackerel. A couple of good-sized ‘goldies’ and some leaping queenfish will add to the sashimi menu! The keen anglers will take-off on a heli fishing adventure to a secret-spot where the fresh meets the salt and as the day comes to an end, make your way to the bar lounge for cocktail hour before another unique dining experience.

Day Twelve – Horizontal Falls

It’s time to ‘personally’ introduce you to another Kimberley icon – The Horizontal Falls. Experience the awesome power of the region’s huge tidal range in an exhilarating tender ride and then climb aboard your air conditioned helicopter for a view of the falls that very few experience! Take a refreshing swim and then walk on the squeaky white sands of Silica Beach. Or join one of the adventure boats on a sightseeing expedition to Whirlpool Pass, another demonstration of the Kimberley’s powerful tides.

All too soon your adventure on the TRUE NORTH is coming to an end – enjoy a farewell dinner to remember as the TRUE NORTH glides past Cockatoo and Koolan Islands, Cape Leveque and down the Dampier Peninsula to Broome!

Day Thirteen – Transfer to Broome

Our arrival in Broome is in time for an early morning coach transfer to your accommodation or connecting flights and the crew will already be looking forward to their next opportunity to welcome you aboard the TRUE NORTH!

The  itinerary provided is an indication of what destinations are usually visited and activities are usually on offer. Throughout the expedition changes may be made to the itinerary as necessary to maximise your expeditionary experience. Allowances may be made for seasonal variations, weather, tidal conditions and any other event that may affect the operation of the vessel.

Personal service and attention to detail are hallmarks of any True North experience, with 22 crew members ready to look after guests at a moment’s notice and six dedicated expedition boats ready to take guests where they want, when they want. The ship’s helicopter, an EC 130, is also available for guests to discover those incredible Kimberley gorges and waterfalls by air. The food and wine experience onboard completes the True North experience, with special destination drinks in remote locations one of the ways the crew creates lasting memories.

True North II offers the same exceptional experience as its sister ship True North, but on a more intimate level, with just 22 guests and 14 crew members onboard at any time. Most cruises are available on either ship - enquire for details.

Each year, the boat makes a circumnavigation of Australia and offers expeditions along WA's Kimberley Coast , South Australia, NSW, Papua New Guinea and Indonesia.

The ship boasts some of the newest maritime technology innovations, among which are the computer-controlled motion stabilizers to ensure a most comfortable ride.

Fine Dining

Food is always a highlight on a North Star Cruise. Dining is a stylish but casual affair. Seating is not assigned. Modern Australian cuisine is featured.

Hors d’oeuvres in the ship’s lounge is a not to be missed daily event! Keep an eye out for succulent oysters (which you almost certainly helped to collect) and sashimi caught just hours before.

Signature dining includes freshly caught barramundi – a revered sport fish possibly caught with your very own hands, or perhaps aged Angus or delicate Wagyu beef, or exquisite Australian lamb!

Our ‘heli-picnics’ are an unforgettable way to enjoy the quintessential Aussie barbeque featuring a wide variety of seafood including freshly caught reef fish, local king prawns, squid, pearl meat and smoked salmon.

Fishing Aboard the True North

A guide just for you

A guide Just For You

If you’re looking for experienced and knowledgeable fishing instructors look no further than the guides aboard the True North. Regardless of whether you are a beginner or an ‘expert’, you will benefit from our ‘local’ knowledge ensuring unequalled opportunity from the remote Kimberley to untouched West Papua and the rarely fished islands of the Eyre Peninsula.

Variety is the spice

Variety is the Spice of Life

Our Seven Seas in Seven Seasons calendar presents an array of species to challenge fisherpersons of every calibre. You will be presented with convenient opportunity to do battle with some of the world’s most revered sports-fish. The iconic barramundi, the elusive mangrove jack, finger mark bream, golden snapper, jewfish, pink snapper, delectable whiting and even the mighty sailfish are all on the agenda!

On the water

On The Water

With six expedition vessels (not zodiacs) accompanying the True North, guests have greater opportunity to do “what they want, when they want.” The luxury of so many dedicated expedition boats means that we can always allocate craft to different fishing styles and to varying degrees of experience. Fish in comfort and receive the individual attention that the True North is famous for.

In the air

The ship’s helicopter also adds unique dimension to fishing on the True North. Heli-fishing is one of our most popular activities – fly over stunning wilderness in air-conditioned comfort to an otherwise inaccessible location! Who could pass up the opportunity to fish where perhaps no one has fished before?

Nothing but the best

Nothing But The Best

The True North carries a full complement of high quality fishing equipment on all cruises. Rods, reels and hand lines are provided for your complimentary convenience however keen anglers are welcome to bring their own gear (6-8kg bait casting outfits are recommended). Lures are available on a replace if you lose basis.

Catch of the day

Catch Of The Day

Our chef’s love to be a part of the fishing action – when the ‘hunters and gathers’ return to their home away from home, the chefs will delight in preparing a lunch or dinner that truly reaps the rewards of your efforts! Our chefs particularly enjoy mud crabbing – not only will they show you how to prepare unforgettable fare; they will also be right by your side when you battle these cantankerous adversaries!

Everyone is invited

Everyone Is Invited

Who can, you can! From the “never fished” to the “I’ve caught ‘em all”, our guides encourage all onboard to join in the action and multiple expedition boats always allow opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of fishing styles in small groups of equal ability!

Ladies, fishing isn’t just for the men, in fact, on the True North it may just be the other way around! Things might start a little slowly but in our experience, once that first fish is in the esky – there’s no stopping the fairer sex! You may just surprise yourself – one of our most common guest comments is “I’ve never given fishing a thought – now I can’t get enough!”

We'll be back

We’ll Be Back

Everyone on the True North is conscious of the fact that fishing in a wilderness area is a privilege. The True North is fully licensed for fishing and fishing regulations are strictly observed.

We never take more than a ‘taste’ and fishing operations are always conducted with the utmost care and respect. Wherever possible we practice ‘catch & release’ techniques and, we never permit any activity that might degrade fish habitat.

True North’s Helicopter

Adding yet another dimension to adventure, most cruise options on the TRUE NORTH also feature an onboard helicopter!

Carrying guests in air conditioned comfort, the ship’s helicopter provides unique opportunity to witness grandeur; unique opportunity to fish billabongs that have never been fished; unique opportunity to discover your very own wilderness! Now it’s not uncommon for our guests to embark with some uncertainty about flying in a helicopter – however it’s always a different story when the time comes for disembarkation.

The ship’s helicopter helps you to climb mountains and volcanoes in air conditioned comfort. Even if you are not as spritely as you once were – the helicopter will deliver you without fuss to even the most inaccessible locations.

See ancient rock art without leaving your seat. Glide over impenetrable jungle and swoop on historic and cultural highlights. Take someone special on a sunrise flight or join the entire guest compliment for an unforgettable heli-picnic.

The ship’s helicopter – another TRUE NORTH icon!

‘Choose the best’: True North luxury cruises are big on adventure

If you’ve ever dreamed of a luxury Kimberley cruise or sailing off into the unknown, True North is the cruise company you need to know about.

What’s your definition of adventure?

True North think it’s any experience that takes you into your unknown. And that’s what the luxury cruise company does, every day.

For more than 30 years, True North has been tracking down unique experiences in Australia, Indonesia, West Papua and Papua New Guinea.

This is not your typical expedition cruise. The built-for-purpose True North has been designed to sail off the beaten track, so you can uncover hidden coastal gems in maximum comfort.

True North cruise

Every True North cruise is unique. The guests craft the itinerary.

You’ll have six dedicated adventure boats and an onboard helicopter at your disposal so the sky really is the limit. Perhaps today will be the day that you catch your first barramundi. Or you could fly to an otherwise impossible‑to‑reach gorge deep in the Kimberley wilderness.

“We can’t necessarily say what you will be doing each day because it’s up to you.” True North

An adventure on the Kimberley coast is a once in a lifetime experience. Make the most of it.

Where can I go?

True North operates all around the magnificent Australian coastline and in the stunning waters of Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Melanesia and the Solomon Islands.

The company carefully crafts its sailing schedule to ensure each destination is at its stunning best.

True North: adventure-packed itineraries

True North adventures

True North is one of the only Australian cruise companies that can access the still-wild coast of Western Australia.

You can sail between WA’s intriguing Abrolhos Islands, a rarely seen archipelago comprised of 122 islands and coral reefs off the coast of Geraldton.

See whale sharks as you explore the world-famous Ningaloo Reef. Explore the fishing paradise of the Montebello Islands and marvel at the pristine Rowley Shoals

True North Adventure Cruises

On a luxury Kimberley cruise, you can explore rugged mountains, spectacular gorges and majestic waterfalls.

In South Australia, the ‘Southern Safari’ cruises along white sandy beaches, inhabited islands and sheltered bays between Kangaroo Island and Ceduna.

Heli inbond King George

You can even choose a luxury True North adventure in Sydney Harbour.

See the spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks in style, or see the start of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

International cruises

True North can also take you deep into Papua New Guinea and West Papua’s incredible wilderness, exploring places rarely seen by tourists.

Departing from Darwin, you can witness the flourishing biodiversity hotspot of Cenderawasih Bay and, snorkel with huge, but gentle whale sharks.

Lady from Rabaul

Papua New Guinea is the land of the unexpected, a paradise just waiting to be found.

With True North, you can take a helicopter flight over the active Rabaul volcano, visit the stirring Isurava memorial on the Kokoda track and witness a crocodile initiation ceremony on the mysterious Sepik River.

True north cruises

True North’s Melanesia cruise offers a rare opportunity to explore the Louisiade Archipelago, which stretches 400km along the northern rim of the Coral Sea. On this luxury cruise, you can also visit the unique Trobriand Islands and spectacular Bougainville.

Head to the True North website below to see the full list of incredible, action-packed luxury cruise itineraries.

What to expect on board

True North cruises ooze comfort and style. The spacious cabins feature modern decor, en-suites and satellite telephones. Guest numbers are limited to 36 and an Australian crew of 22 uniquely chaperones every experience.

Expect sustainable, organic, modern Australian cuisine onboard. The ship’s menus are destination-inspired and feature the best locally sourced ingredients.

Signature dishes might include the revered barramundi – perhaps caught by your own hand that very day.

True north cruises

Guests also love the plump black-lip oysters prize which True North staff prize from a rock. You can help, or simply watch sipping on an essential glass of champagne.

Other favourites include mud crabs cooked on the beach at sunset and, Spanish mackerel served as sashimi in the ship’s lounge.

Hometown highlights include delicious mangrove jack and finger-mark bream, seasonal yellow-fin tuna and Yeeda Estate beef.

true north boat cruises

True North’s ‘heli-picnics’ are an unforgettable way to enjoy the quintessential Aussie barbeque. They feature an array of seafood cooked alongside a private waterfall in the wilderness.

What you won’t get is extended periods at sea. True North adventures are just that – adventures. They go where the bigger ship can not go and they do it in style.

Guests consistently remark “that’s the best holiday I have ever had”.

Make sure you choose the best.

True north helicopter

Adding yet another dimension to adventure, most True North cruises feature an onboard helicopter!

“Wow – who would have thought, I have never been in a helicopter before, now I can’t get enough. I can’t speak highly enough about the whole operation, I felt completely safe and I could not have hoped to have seen all that I saw if we didn’t have a helicopter onboard.”

Helicopter Specifications

The light, single-engine Eurocopter 130 B4 is the quietest, most spacious helicopter available on the market. The ultra-quiet EC130 B4 integrates the latest technological advances of EUROCOPTER’s new generation helicopters. It has a maximum gross weight of 2.4tonnes, and offers an enlarged cabin, allowing comfortable accommodation for the pilot and 6 passengers on individual leather seats.

With air-conditioning and large cabin windows, it is perfectly suited for getting those spectacular aerial shots and exploring the many destinations that are on offer with North Star Cruises Australia.

Heli-operations are run by Rob Colbert, Chief Pilot of Skyhook Helicopters Pty Ltd. Rob has been working in and flying around the Kimberley region for over 23 years, and has been working with TRUE NORTH since 1996. He has a keen interest in fishing, local history and culture, and provides entertaining commentary on all flights! Or you may be lucky enough to have Rainor Marshall or Will Stinson as your pilot, both experienced and very knowledgeable in their own right!

'My Security Loves It When I Do That.' Tom Cruise Recalls Hilarious Encounter With A Young Woman When He Was Trying To Go Incognito On The Subway

Tom Cruise got recognized in public and the result was something he'll "never forget."

Tom Cruise as Pete Mitchell in Top Gun: Maverick

Tom Cruise is probably the biggest movie star in the world , and while that has to be pretty cool a lot of the time, as he gets to be part of the Closing Ceremonies of the Olympics , we know that extreme levels of fame often mean celebrities can’t do a lot of very “normal” stuff that they might otherwise like to do. But Tom Cruise has said he hasn’t drastically changed his life as a result of his fame, and will still do simple things like take public transportation, though that has led to some pretty funny interactions with the public.

In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! , Cruise related a story that sounds like it occurred while the newest Mission: Impossible movies were filming in England. Cruise said that he has taken the Tube from where he is living to the film studio, though he admits the security that stays with him is not a fan. Cruise said…

Yeah, I do go on transportation. My security loves that when I do that. The Tube in England. I do that. Like, sometimes I put on my hat and my earphones and I’ll just go in and get on the Tube if I want to get to the studio.

It sounds like the Tube is the easiest way for Cruise, who has been living in London recently, to get from point A to point B. But with all the people, Cruise’s security doesn’t love it, likely because if a mass of people recognized him, it could potentially lead to a situation where the star got mobbed. It doesn’t appear that’s ever happened, though Cruise has been recognized before.

The actor relayed a story where a teenager on the Tube recognized him. While most of the people heading home weren’t looking at the world around them, this girl did and was shocked that nobody else realized that Tom Cruise was on the train with them. Cruise continued...

Sometimes it works. During rush hour, I’ll go in and I’ll be there. I remember one time I was there and there was this 14-year-old kid, this girl was there. And everyone was looking at their phones and I just saw her, I looked over, my head’s down I got my baseball cap, and she’s just staring at me like this.

Obviously, Cruise wanted to avoid a scene, so he silently asked the girl not to say anything. She politely agreed, to keep the secret, but not without making sure she had some proof that she’d had a run in with Tom Cruise. He said…

And I looked at her, and she just looked at me and she just looked around the subway like this, and then looked back to me, and I went [puts a finger in front of lips]. And the look she gave me, she just looked around, she was like [smiling], took her iPhone and went 'click' and was like 'Alright.' I’ll never forget her.

If everybody’s reaction to seeing celebrities in public was this, it would probably be a lot easier for them to go about their lives. The interaction seems to have touched Cruise. And until Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Two is complete , maybe people on public transit should take a moment to look around. You never know who you might see.

The Heli camping night would have to be the absolute highlight of our trip on Kimberley Ultimate 6. Alan (Pilot) was sooooo good, great knowledge, excellent camp cook, host and fabulous company! Was fun having Chris and Laura (Crew) as well. Was the most beautiful spot up in the top of the Kimberley, scenery and especially the stars in that outback black night. Where else can you step out of the helicopter and jump into a glorious fresh water pool. Sit around a campfire and then into your luxurious stretcher. Felt like we were in a dream!!! Would like to thank The True North Team for a truly unforgettable experience. See you all again soon. Cheers (less)

Never seen the Kimberley Coast before, True North made it possible to access remote passages and fiords of the remote western Australian coast line. The on board helicopter was a seamless transport to see the Kimberley coast from above and gave a complete magnification of the journey, as well as permitting access to the remote indigenous cave art consented by local indigenous communities. The Montgomery Reef over 100 kms long is a powerful natural wonder that rises from the sea as the 11 metre tide drops. Both at water level at the Cruise ship and from the helicopter this amazing sight will be my highlight along with the major waterfalls enroute which we encounter as a cooling natural rainfall in the 30 degree daytime. The compact cruise ship True North boasted hotel room comfort. Food was restaurant quality embellished by the catch of the day. I loved the spacious lounge and forward deck. Finally, the major stand out was the genuine staff service culture and friendliness, I think very hard to beat. A genuinely unique experience. Highly recommended. (less)

Congratulations on reaching this milestone... Happy 30th Anniversary. EVERY DAY on TRUE NORTH was full of treasured memories. One memory I would like to share with you was the experience I had on a "Ladies Only" fishing trip. It was such FUN!! Many FIRSTS for me – NEVER been fishing in a boat before, NEVER drank champagne holding a fishing line in one hand and a glass in the other and NEVER caught a Barramundi before and then that evening, at dinner, got to wear "the cap", because my catch was the first Barra caught that day. Hard to beat this day, but it was only one of many. Your helicopter BBQ's are also very memorable experiences and could we ever forget the oysters, so fresh and eaten with a squeeze of lemon, just standing on the beach and eating freshly caught mud crabs on the beach around the bonfire. I would like to thank The Haines Group for the opportunity we have recently experienced aboard the ‘True North’. The 7-day Snap Shot Tour through the Kimberley’s is not a holiday rather a 5-star Adventure exploring a part of Australia that is relatively untouched. Amazing History, Fishing and Hiking through Gorges, add to this great food and people, not to mention the ‘True North ‘itself! I couldn’t think of a better way to spend a week. (less)

This Meadowlands boat tour is a 'wow factory,' with great views of NJ marsh wildlife

3-minute read.

Showing people what she called the “wow factory” — the natural wonders that exist in New Jersey's own backyard — is what Gabrielle Bennett-Meany and her colleagues at the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority hope to do.

Bennett-Meany serves as the authority's manager of parks, trails and open space and is one of the guides for its free boat tours, which offer visitors close-up access to the Meadowlands' natural wonders.

“When you’re on the highway, sometimes you don’t even know what’s down here,” Bennett-Meany said. “They say, ‘This is amazing. Who knew? I drive over Route 3 every day,’ or ‘I drive on the turnpike every day.’”

With 30 years’ experience in the Meadowlands, she brings an enthusiasm and insight to the experience, providing context about the region as well as the wildlife glimpsed along the way.

When do the Meadowlands tours run?

The authority runs tours weekly throughout the spring and summer, and those looking for a last dose of sunshine can still find a chance through the end of September. There are also walking trails in the Meadowlands region that are open all year round for visitors.

But the boats may be the crown jewel of the operation.

Boat tours that can accommodate about 14 people are led by veteran guides who bring decades of experience studying the wildlife and ecosystem of a vast and still largely overlooked area.

Bennett-Meany called the region the “best-kept secret” and said sometimes that’s for the best, because the makeup of the riverbed can be tricky to navigate, especially for people without experience.

The return of the osprey and the presence of bald eagles have garnered attention in the past, but the difference between hearing a story and seeing it in person can be astounding. And then there’s the peregrine falcon. The fastest animal on the planet — with flight speeds topping 200 miles per hour — can be found nestled into the underside of a bridge along Route 3.

Things like that provide context to visitors.

The marshlands are home to plenty of ducks and seagulls that can be found throughout the region, but watching a flock of cormorants take flight as the boat comes into the dock is a difference maker. It’s something unique — but with American Dream and MetLife Stadium, soon to host the 2026 World Cup, still in view, it's quintessentially Jersey.

The boat tours run along the Hackensack River and into the nearby tributaries and marshes, depending on tides and wildlife.

Bennett-Meany likes to start each tour with a little context about the river and how it works, running from the mountains of upstate New York into New Jersey before meeting the Passaic River and running into the Newark Bay. As a tidal river, it sees fluctuations in the water level, which the tours take into account.

“People live in our communities and are sort of separated from our natural areas, but once we begin to realize that our community is part of these natural areas,” she said, “it makes us think about what we’re doing in our hometown, how we’re connected to the environment and why many, many of these environments are very important.”

Word Cup 2026: NJSEA approves additional $13 million for work on MetLife Stadium

From where do the Meadowlands tour boats launch?

Boats launch from River Barge Park Marina in Carlstadt and venture up and down the river for about two hours. The marina’s manager, Angelo Urato, has watched the agency and the area evolve during 40 years of service.

He said that at low tide, the animals tend to be more active and visitors have a better shot at seeing a variety of species.

Bennett-Meany said having a harbor seal turn up about a decade ago was exciting, but the highlight for her has been the return of the ospreys.

She explained that decades ago, before the Clean Water Act set parameters on pollution, it was common to dump waste in the river, and the water quality was poor.

But wetlands protection efforts led to the rebirth of the area, and as species of fish and birds started to come back, so did the bigger birds that feed on them.

Enter the osprey. About 15 years ago, an osprey turned up. It nested and had young but ultimately failed. A year or two later, they came back and nested, and now they are a constant.

“It’s my favorite resurgence story,” she said.

Although the boating season is coming to an end, the Meadowlands Birding Festival will take place on Oct. 6 and will feature bird walks, talks and other activities at DeKorte Park in Lyndhurst.

3 Cruise Line Stocks Promising Near-Term Growth: RCL, CCL, NCLH

August 27, 2024 — 02:45 pm EDT

Written by Nalak Das for Zacks  ->

The cruise industry is benefiting from strong demand and increased booking volumes. Solid bookings concerning North American and European sailings are driving the space. Also, strong pricing (on closer-in-demand) and solid onboard spending bode well for the industry.

At this stage, it will be prudent to invest in cruise line operators with a favorable Zacks Rank. A few such operators have strong upside left. Three among them are Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. RCL , Carnival Corp. & plc CCL and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd. NCLH .

Strong Demand for Cruise Liners

According to the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), the number of passengers embarking on cruises is projected to reach 35.7 million in 2024, suggesting an increase from 31.5 million in 2023. The projection calls for a 6% rise from the 2019 figures, reflecting the cruising industry’s upside.

Cruise operators are investing in new hardware, including mega-ships and private destinations, to acquire new customers. J.P. Morgan JPM Research estimates the cruise industry to capture approximately 3.8% of the $1.9 trillion global vacation market by 2028.

3 Top Cruise Line Stock Picks

We have narrowed our search to three big cruise liners that have strong potential for the rest of 2024. These stocks have seen positive earnings estimate revisions in the last 30 days. Each of our picks currently carries a Zacks Rank # 1 (Strong Buy) and 2 (Buy). You can see the complete list of today’s Zacks #1 Rank stocks here .

The chart below shows the share price performance of our five picks in the past three months.

Zacks Investment Research

Solid Earnings Estimate Revisions for RCL Stock

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. posted impressive second-quarter 2024 results, with earnings and revenues beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate. RCL has been benefiting from strong cruising demand from new and loyal guests and robust booking trends. Also, strength in consumer spending onboard and pre-cruise purchases bodes well.

RCL emphasized investing in a modern digital travel platform to streamline the vacation booking process for customers and expand wallet share. Moreover, RCL emphasized new innovative ships and onboard experiences to boost its offering and deliver superior yields and margins.

Zacks Rank #1 Royal Caribbean Cruises has an expected revenue and earnings growth rate of 18.1% and 69.9%, respectively, for the current year. The stock has seen positive earnings estimate revisions for the current quarter, current year and next year in the last 30 days.

Zacks Investment Research

Strong Price Upside for RCL Shares

In the past three months, RCL shares provided a return of 9.2%. The average price target of brokerage firms represents an increase of 14.2% from the last closing price of $162.05. The brokerage target price is currently in the range of $154-$210.

CCL Shares See Solid Earnings Estimate Revisions

Carnival Corp. & plc reported impressive second-quarter fiscal 2024 results, with earnings and revenues beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate. This was driven by sustained demand strength and increased booking volumes at significantly higher prices. CCL reported strong booking momentum for 2025, with record volumes surpassing the 2024 levels in price and occupancy.

CCL’s focus on marketing campaigns and fleet-optimization efforts, along with fleet expansion initiatives is encouraging. Given the uptrend, CCL raised its fiscal 2024 adjusted EPS expectations to $1.18 from the previous expectation of $0.98.

Zacks Rank #2 Carnival has an expected revenue and earnings growth rate of 15% and more than 100%, respectively, for the current year (ending November 2024). The stock has seen positive earnings estimate revisions for the current quarter, next quarter, current year and next year in the last 60 days.

Zacks Investment Research

In the past three months, CCL shares provided a return of 9.6%. The average price target of brokerage firms represents an increase of 36.5% from the last closing price of $16.60. The brokerage target stock price is currently in the range of $15-$27.

NCLH Stock Earnings Surpass Expectations

Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd.  reported solid second-quarter 2024 results, with earnings and revenues surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate. NCLH is benefiting from strong demand, high pricing and increased booking volumes, leading to record advance ticket sales.

NCLH’s focus on fleet expansion efforts and digital initiatives bodes well. These factors showcase that the company’s strategy is well-aligned with its growth goals and 2026 financial and sustainability targets. Given the substantial progress made so far and current demand expectations, NCLH raised its 2024 full-year guidance.

Zacks Rank #1 Norwegian Cruise Line has an expected revenue and earnings growth rate of 9.8% and more than 100%, respectively, for the current year. The stock has seen positive earnings estimate revisions for the current quarter, next quarter, current year and next year in the last 30 days.

Zacks Investment Research

In the past three months, NCLH stock provided a return of 9.1%. The average share price target of brokerage firms represents an increase of 28.7% from the last closing price of $17.45. The brokerage target stock price is currently in the range of $17.50-$32.

Zacks Names #1 Semiconductor Stock

It's only 1/9,000th the size of NVIDIA which skyrocketed more than +800% since we recommended it. NVIDIA is still strong, but our new top chip stock has much more room to boom.

With strong earnings growth and an expanding customer base, it's positioned to feed the rampant demand for Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Internet of Things. Global semiconductor manufacturing is projected to explode from $452 billion in 2021 to $803 billion by 2028.
