Best Travel Insurance For Golfers

We all love a good golf trip don't we? Whether it is to Portugal, Spain, resorts in the United States, or even further afield to the UAE or Australia, the idea of playing golf abroad with friends is as good as it gets.

However before you get too excited and go about booking your next trip, there are several things you need to get right. For a start, if you are taking your golf clubs a good travel bag is a must and going one step further, making sure you have insurance on your clubs, as well as travel insurance for your entire trip, is arguably as important as it gets. Knowing you are covered for any eventuality allows you to properly relax.

There are loads of companies and plans out there which is good because there is a lot of choice, but at the same time this can be overwhelming so we have sought to help you out by narrowing down some of our top recommendations for travel insurance for golfers.

What to consider when buying travel insurance

So what are some of the things you need to consider when buying travel insurance? We have given some key factors and considerations below. First we would recommend checking your usual travel insurance provider to see if it covers golf whilst on holiday but on some occasions a specialist policy is needed.

Damaged, stolen or lost golf equipment -  If you are taking your pride and joys away with you this is probably the most important aspect to get right. We would recommend picking a plan that offers a good amount here, so that if the worst comes to the worst, you are properly covered. Also we would recommend having some kind of idea of how much your equipment is worth whether that be clubs, carts or tech.

Just some of the other aspects to consider in a typical golf travel insurance plan are:

Cover for non-refundable green fees , if you can't play due to an accident, sickness or adverse weather.

Replacement golf equipment hire

Financial failure protection if your travel company, hotel, or airline go into administration

Medial and repatriation expenses

Personal liability insurance and legal costs, incase you injure another person while playing

Damage to third-party property , in case a wayward shot breaks a window or hits a car

Cost - Of course cost is an important factor to consider because there are plans at lots of different price points. Therefore we would recommend picking a plan that you can afford, whilst also making sure it offers enough cover for you as well.

How do you insure golf clubs when flying?

Plans with baggage insurance are recommended for travelers to protect belongings against loss, theft, or damage. For golfers traveling with their clubs, special consideration should be taken for plans with baggage insurance that offers sporting equipment coverage.

Golf travel insurance

We know you’re not really that interested in travel insurance . We know you’re only buying it because you need it. Don’t worry – we want to make getting covered as quick and as simple as possible so you can get on and enjoy your golfing holiday.

What is covered with golf travel insurance?

With a golf travel insurance policy from InsureandGo, you can get cover for your golf equipment and your green fees, as well as everything else from trip cancellation to medical expenses. You’ll be covered while you’re away, even if you’re doing it for your entire trip.

Golf equipment cover

We cover up to £1,500 worth of golf equipment, with each item/pair insured up to £250. Equipment that can be covered in your golf policy includes:

  • Non-motorised trolleys

You’ll be able to claim for any items declared on your policy if they’re lost, damaged or stolen during your trip. Any item over the value of £100  may  be subject to a 10% deduction where you can’t show us with proof of purchase (like the the original receipts).

Green fees cover

You’ll be covered for up to £75 a day and up to £300 for a percentage of the cost of your green fees, where you can’t get a refund. These can include hiring golf equipment and tuition fees. We’ll cover you if you can’t play due to illness, injury, or if you have documents lost or stolen that prevent you from taking part.

Hole-in-one cover

Although insurance traditionally covers you if something unlucky happens, hole-in-one cover makes sure that, if you’re lucky enough to hit an ace, you won’t get stuck footing the entire bar bill!

Golf clubs around the world have it written into their club rules that anyone who hits a hole-in-one has to buy everyone (or at least their playing group) a round at the clubhouse. Our hole-in-one cover could save you a pretty penny by offering up to £100 towards the costs.

When you claim, you must obtain a written report from the golf club secretary confirming the competition details counter signed by your playing partner together with the original certified score card. You must also get receipts from the golf club for expenditure incurred immediately following your hole-in-one.

For more details about all parts of our golf travel insurance, please see our  policy documents page .

If you’re planning on more than golfing on your holiday, we cover over 50 sports and activities as standard. Check out which  activities you’ll be covered for online  or in our policy documents.

*Discount excludes any premium generated to cover medical conditions or optional extras & is automatically applied. This offer cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer. Discount tiers of 5% for premiums between £0-49, 10% for £50-249, & 20% for £250+ apply. Offer ends at 23:59 on 02/09/24. T&Cs apply.

  • Unlimited emergency medical expenses available on Black level policies.

Golf Trip Insurance

Travel insurance for your golf vacation.

A golf trip sounds rather benign to the inexperienced, but as peaceful as it might be to imagine the rolling greens of the golf course and sinking birdie shots, there are many things that can go wrong to sour the trip.

What if the airline loses or damages your golf clubs or other baggage? Many airlines will not reimburse travelers for loss or damage to such expensive equipment. Or, perhaps you paid your greens fees as part of a golf travel package, but the weather doesn’t cooperate and your trip is cancelled. If those fees were non-refundable, you just lost your money. Golf trip insurance can protect you.

With a golf trip insurance plan from RoamRight, your golf trip is protected:

  • Baggage coverage  for lost golf bags, clubs and shoes
  • Reimbursement for greens fees that are part of a golf trip package if your tee time is missed due to trip interruption or delay
  • Medical coverage  for golfing accidents or other illnesses or injuries
  • Trip Cancellation  and  Trip Interruption to cover costs of other unused, non-refundable deposits and payments like equipment rentals and lessons.

How To Get Golf Travel Insurance

How To Get Golf Holiday Insurance

Are you an avid golfer who loves to travel and explore new golf courses around the world? If so, it's crucial to protect yourself and your golfing equipment with the right insurance coverage. Golf travel insurance is designed specifically for golfers who travel frequently and want peace of mind during their trips. In this article, we will guide you through the process of getting golf travel insurance, from understanding its importance to researching providers and comparing policies.

When it comes to golf travel, accidents and unforeseen circumstances can happen at any time. Imagine arriving at your dream golf destination, only to find that your golf clubs have been lost or damaged during the flight. Without the right insurance coverage, this could turn into a costly and disappointing experience. That's where golf travel insurance comes in. It provides you with financial protection against various risks such as lost or stolen golf equipment, trip cancellations, medical emergencies, and even hole-in-one celebrations. By having the right coverage, you can enjoy your golfing adventures without worrying about the potential financial burden that may arise from unexpected events.

Take out: Golf Holiday Insurance today...

Understanding the Importance of Golf Travel Insurance

You don't want to risk losing all your hard-earned money and precious golfing gear, do you? That's why it's absolutely crucial for you to understand the importance of getting golf travel insurance. When you plan a golfing trip, you invest a significant amount of time and money into making it a memorable experience. From booking flights and accommodations to reserving tee times at top courses, there are numerous expenses involved. Without proper insurance coverage, any unexpected event or accident can result in financial loss. Whether it's a canceled trip due to unforeseen circumstances or damage or theft of your golf equipment, having golf travel insurance provides you with the peace of mind that you will be protected against such risks.

Moreover, golf travel insurance also offers coverage for medical emergencies during your trip. While playing golf, there is always a risk of injuries or accidents occurring. In a foreign country, the costs of medical treatments can be exorbitant, and without insurance, you may find yourself burdened with hefty bills. However, with golf travel insurance, you can be assured that your medical expenses will be covered, allowing you to focus on your recovery rather than worrying about the financial implications. Additionally, some insurance policies also provide coverage for trip interruption or cancellation due to personal reasons, such as illness or the loss of a family member. This ensures that you can recoup your expenses and make alternate arrangements without facing significant financial strain.

Assessing Your Coverage Needs

Assessing your coverage needs is an essential step before embarking on your golfing adventure. Golf travel insurance offers various levels of coverage, and it is important to determine what you require. Start by considering the destination of your golf trip. If you are traveling domestically, your regular health insurance may provide coverage for any medical emergencies. However, if you are going abroad, it is crucial to ensure that your golf travel insurance includes international medical coverage. This will protect you against potential medical expenses, such as hospital stays, doctor visits, or emergency medical evacuations.

Additionally, you should assess the value of your golf equipment and whether it is covered under your existing insurance policies. While some standard travel insurance policies may cover lost or stolen baggage, they may have limits on the amount of coverage for valuable items like golf clubs. Therefore, it is advisable to purchase a specific golf travel insurance policy that provides adequate coverage for your equipment. Moreover, consider the cancellation and trip interruption coverage offered by the insurance. If unforeseen circumstances, such as injury or illness, prevent you from going on your golf trip, having this coverage can help reimburse you for non-refundable expenses, such as prepaid green fees or accommodations. By assessing your coverage needs before your golfing adventure, you can ensure that you have the right protection in place for a worry-free trip.

Researching Insurance Providers

When researching insurance providers, it's important to find a company that offers comprehensive coverage for your specific needs. Not all insurance providers offer golf travel insurance, so it's crucial to find one that specializes in this type of coverage. Start by searching online for insurance companies that have experience in providing coverage for golf trips. Look for companies that have positive customer reviews and a good reputation in the industry. It's also a good idea to ask for recommendations from fellow golfers or travel agents who have previously used golf travel insurance. They can provide valuable insights and recommendations based on their personal experiences.

Once you have a list of potential insurance providers, take the time to thoroughly research each one. Look into their coverage options, including what is covered and what is not. Make sure they offer coverage for things like trip cancellation, trip interruption, medical expenses, and lost or stolen golf equipment. It's also important to check if they offer coverage for any pre-existing medical conditions you may have. Additionally, consider the level of customer service provided by the insurance company. Look for a company that has a 24/7 helpline or assistance service, so you can get help whenever you need it during your golf trip. By doing your research and finding an insurance provider that meets all your needs, you can travel with peace of mind knowing that you are well-protected in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

Comparing Policies and Costs

To effectively compare policies and costs, it's essential to thoroughly research and evaluate the coverage options and prices offered by different insurance providers. Start by identifying your specific needs and requirements for golf travel insurance. Consider factors such as trip duration, destination, and the level of coverage you desire. Once you have a clear understanding of what you're looking for, begin researching insurance providers that offer golf travel insurance.

Take the time to gather information on the coverage options provided by each insurance company. Look for policies that offer comprehensive coverage for medical expenses, trip cancellation or interruption, and lost or damaged equipment. Additionally, consider any specific coverage needs you may have, such as coverage for golf course closures or hole-in-one celebrations.

After gathering information on the coverage options, compare the costs of the policies offered by different insurance providers. Keep in mind that while price is an important factor, it should not be the sole determining factor. Consider the value and extent of coverage provided by each policy and weigh it against the cost. Look for any additional fees or deductibles that may affect the overall cost of the policy. By thoroughly researching and comparing policies and costs, you can ensure that you select the best golf travel insurance policy for your needs.

Applying for Golf Travel Insurance

Once you've found the ideal policy, it is crucial to complete the application process accurately and thoroughly. This ensures that you have the necessary coverage for your golf travel needs. To apply for golf travel insurance, you will typically need to provide personal information such as your name, address, date of birth, and contact details. You may also need to disclose any pre-existing medical conditions or any other relevant information that could impact your coverage.

In addition to personal information, you will also need to provide details about your trip, such as the dates of travel, the destination, and the purpose of your trip. For golf travel insurance, you may need to specify that you will be participating in golf-related activities during your trip. It is important to be honest and accurate when providing this information to ensure that you have the appropriate coverage. Once you have completed the application, review it carefully to ensure that all the information is correct. Submit the application and pay any required premiums to finalize the process. By following these steps, you can successfully apply for golf travel insurance and have peace of mind during your golfing adventures.

In conclusion, golf travel insurance is a crucial aspect of planning a golf trip. It provides coverage for various risks and ensures peace of mind during your travels. By assessing your coverage needs, researching insurance providers, and comparing policies and costs, you can find the right insurance plan that suits your requirements and budget. Applying for golf travel insurance is a simple process that can be done online or through insurance agents. Don't let unexpected circumstances ruin your golf trip - invest in golf travel insurance and enjoy your time on the course without any worries.

Golf Travel Insurance - Golf Cover for You and Your Equipment

Travel insurance for golfing trips abroad.

Golf Cover Insurance has been designed with golfers in mind and although playing non-competitive golf is covered within our policies under activities pack A at no extra cost, it is worthwhile considering taking out the Golf Cover Insurance extension. This Golf Holiday Travel Insurance extends your standard Travel Insurance policy to provide golf club cover, safeguarding your equipment and non-refundable green fees. It can be added to most Travel Insurance policies taken out with Just Travel Cover, including single and annual trips.

All Travel Insurance policies at Just Travel Cover come with Covid-19 cover as standard. Covid-19 cover offers your protection against cancellation if you contract Covid-19 before your holiday and cannot travel as well as emergency medical expenses if you contract Covid-19 whilst abroad.

Golf Insurance with Cover for Medical Conditions

Don’t forget that as we work with a panel of insurers we can provide cover for hundreds of pre-existing medical conditions with no upper age limit. We advise to always check the policy wording to ensure that you have the appropriate level of cover for your needs and are aware of any exclusions that may apply. It is important that you declare all pre-existing medical conditions when getting Golf Travel Insurance. This way, you are covered should anything health-related go wrong on your golf trip. We cover more than golf clubs and equipment. We also offer protection for cancellations and cover for emergency medical expenses, including repatriation, should you need to return home quickly due to a medical emergency. Plus, with our 24/7 support, help is just a phone call away, providing peace of mind so you can focus on enjoying your game.

Is It Worth Getting Golf Cover Insurance?

Travel Insurance with golf extension protects any owned or hired golf equipment. The additional golf club insurance for travel will include the repair or replacement of golfing equipment that has been lost, stolen or damaged whilst on your trip. You will also be able to claim a set amount for the cost of hiring replacement golf equipment that was a result of accidental loss, theft or damage to your own golfing equipment during your golf break.

Not only this, Golf Cover Insurance also provides cover for loss of non-refundable green fees and some insurers offer cover for ‘Hole in One’. When getting a Golf Travel Insurance policy, make sure to add the ‘golf cover extension’, as well as declaring any medical conditions, and we will only show you policies that can provide golf cover insurance for you and your golfing equipment and any medical conditions you may have. This way, you can compare policies tailored to you and your golf holiday. Always check your policy wording for your chosen insurer as cover varies by insurer and some policies contain exclusions.

Why buy golf travel insurance?

Whilst the risks associated with golf are proportionally lower than many other sports, it is worth considering what can go wrong whilst you’re abroad.

If you are planning to travel with your own clubs, ensuring these are covered under your policy is a good idea. Our Golf travel policy can provide protection for up to £5,600 worth of equipment as an optional extra. This would cover your golf clubs from damages, loss, or being stolen,  both on and off the course.

In the unlikely event of an injury to you or someone else whilst playing, the policy also includes personal accident and personal liability insurance as standard.

What does golf travel insurance cover?

Should you get accidentally injured or require medical assistance whilst playing golf overseas,  golf travel insurance will cover your healthcare and repatriation costs.

Our policy will also cover you during your trip when you are not on the course, just like a standard travel insurance policy.

You will receive cover for trip cancellation and curtailment, personal liability to cover you from accidental injury to a third party, plus golf equipment cover.

Golf Travel Insurance

travel insurance for golf trips

Golf holiday insurance to give you peace of mind.

More and more golf enthusiasts are taking a break from their local club and combining their love of sport with their love of travel, visiting unique and beautiful destinations around the world.

The UK is home to some of the world’s most famous and challenging golf courses. You can play a round on the Old Course at St Andrews, which is known as ‘the home of golf,’ or you can try one of the UK’s Ryder Cup courses, such as The Belfry or Celtic Manor.

But if you want to travel abroad, there are plenty of places to perfect your swing further afield. In mainland Europe, you can play the same courses as European Tour pros like Rory McIlroy; there’s Le Golf National in France and the famous Stadium Course at PGA Catalunya in Spain, for example.

Or, you can take the holiday of a lifetime and head across the Atlantic to play the finest courses the USA has to offer. You can literally walk in the footsteps of Tiger Woods at Pebble Beach or take on one of the most iconic golf shots in the world at TPC Sawgrass.

If you’re planning to escape on a golf break this year, in the UK or somewhere more exotic, make sure you buy golf holiday insurance before you travel. Our golf equipment insurance will help cover your essential items, including your beloved clubs, and protect you against risks such as cancellation, baggage loss and emergency medical expenses.

With golf holiday insurance from one of the world’s largest travel insurance and assistance companies, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy your trip. Our international and multilingual team of talented people are available to help 24/7, 365 days a year in the event of a medical emergency.

Below is some more information about our products, for which Terms and Conditions apply. Please visit the policy information hub for full details.

  • Loss of personal money
  • Personal accident
  • Missed departures
  • Delayed departures

  • Delayed golf equipment: We’ll pay up to the amount shown in the schedule for you to hire alternative golf equipment if yours is stolen on your outward journey, or is delayed for more than 12 hours from when you arrived at your destination.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes! When you take out a golf travel insurance policy with Allianz Assistance, golf club cover is included.

With our golf travel insurance policies, cover is provided for your golf equipment. This includes your golf clubs, golf bag, golf trolley and golf shoes; you’re protected if this equipment is lost, damaged, stolen or delayed.

Although we include cover for golf as an activity on our Sports and Leisure travel insurance, opting for travel insurance including golf cover can protect you against the specific risks that are associated with golf holidays.

When you add golf cover to your travel insurance policy, it can help protect you if your golf equipment is lost, damaged, stolen or delayed during your trip. It can also pay for a loss of green fees if you have to cancel or cut short your trip, or if you cannot play golf due to an injury or illness during your trip.

If you choose not to add golf insurance to your policy, you’ll need to pay for replacement equipment; you’ll also have to pay green fees if you cannot play. Depending on how many rounds of golf you’re planning to play, these costs could run into thousands of pounds.

We offer two different types of golf travel insurance: Single Trip and Annual insurance.

If you’re only taking one golf holiday this year, you’ll find that our Single Trip travel insurance is best suited to your needs. Depending on the country of travel and duration of stay you choose, you’ll be protected in the UK, Europe, or further afield, for a maximum of 180 days.

But if you plan on taking multiple golf holidays this year, an Annual policy may be better suited to your needs. It can cover you for an unlimited number of trips, up to 31 days in duration over a 12-month period. As such, multi-trip policies can be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

How to ensure you have the right cover

Does your bank or credit card company provide cover.

Many bank accounts and credit cards come with some level of travel insurance cover. While some may be comprehensive, they may not cover you for everything you have planned whilst you’re away, particularly if you have adventurous plans or unusual excursions booked.

Make sure you look into the travel insurance policy that you have before every trip, to make sure it’s suitable for you and your plans.

Purchasing a holiday using a credit card means you are often protected by Consumer Protection cover. In most cases, it allows you to get your money returned to you if your provider defaults and you cannot travel.

Are you covered by ABTA or ATOL?

If you have booked a holiday through a tour operator or travel agent, it may be worth checking if you are covered by ABTA (Association of British Travel Agents) or ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s License). This type of cover means that your package holiday is protected if, for example, the travel company providing your holiday arrangements or the travel agent themselves fail financially or close down.

Your travel agents will be able to tell you if your holiday is ABTA or ATOL protected. Alternatively, use the links provided to check your cover at home.

The Best Golf Club Travel Insurance

X

As a company of avid golfers, we love our clubs just as much as you love yours. So, we understand that your sticks aren’t just another piece of equipment, but they’re of great value to you, too. We also understand that the prospect of checking baggage at the airport can be nerve-wracking. After all, the thought of leaving your precious clubs in the hands of unknown baggage handlers can evoke a sense of unease and vulnerability.

Recognizing the anxiety that comes with entrusting your golf clubs to the uncertainties of travel, we emphasize the indispensable nature of golf club travel insurance. It becomes a reassuring ally in the face of these concerns, providing a layer of protection that extends beyond the uncertainties of airport handling. With golf club travel insurance, you not only safeguard your clubs from unforeseen mishaps but also alleviate the apprehension associated with parting ways with your prized possessions.

Protect Your Gear with Golf Club Travel Insurance

With Ship Sticks’ golf club travel insurance, protecting your clubs can be completed in just a few clicks. All golf club shipments come with $1,000 of complimentary coverage. Should you need to insure your bag for more, Ship Sticks offers up to $7,500 of value protection on domestic and international shipments for a small, nominal cost.

When selecting your preferred level of golf club travel insurance, Ship Sticks recommends selecting an option equal to your shipment’s overall value. While damage and loss are extremely uncommon, Ship Sticks hopes you’ll find comfort in knowing your clubs come with a minimum of $1,000 in golf club travel insurance, a service unmatched by any major airline or shipping competitor.

Should you wish to travel entirely bag-free on your golf trip, Ship Sticks makes it easy to ship your luggage as well. From carry-on baggage to oversized luggage, send everything you’ll need for your trip ahead of your arrival. $500 of complimentary insurance is included with all luggage shipments and, like golf clubs, you have the option to insure for up to $7,500.

Be sure to select your desired insurance amount while booking online. Or, if you’re booking over the phone, simply tell your booking agent what insurance amount you’d prefer. It’s just that easy!

In addition to golf club travel insurance, Ship Sticks also includes an on-time delivery guarantee, so your golf clubs arrive at the first tee before your tee time, every time. For even more peace of mind, each shipment is paired with a unique tracking ID. So, you’ll be able to follow the status of your sticks every step of the way.

In addition to golf club travel insurance, pay special attention to how you’re packing your golf clubs. Begin by covering clubheads with secure headcovers to prevent scratches and dings. Or, remove the club heads and stow them in a pocket of your golf bag if possible. We also recommend adding extra padding within the bag, such as golf clothing or towels to act as a buffer between the golf clubs sticking out of your bag. Consider adding a stiff arm to your bag, too, that will guard the top of your bag against impacts.

A meticulous packing approach not only protects your beloved clubs from potential damage but also contributes to a worry-free travel experience! Check out our guided video below for step-by-step packing instructions.

The importance of ensuring the safety and protection of your golf clubs during travel cannot be overstated. This is where golf club travel insurance becomes an indispensable companion on all your golf trips. With this insurance, you can travel with the confidence that your beloved clubs are shielded from unforeseen mishaps. If you’re interested in learning more about our golf club travel insurance, contact our customer support team, available seven days a week.

What Does Travel Insurance for All-Inclusive Resorts Cover?

The best travel insurance for an all-inclusive resort should cover the basics so you can relax knowing your investment is protected if something goes wrong. Standard travel insurance protection typically includes:

  • Trip cancellation insurance : Covers travel costs such as airfare and lodging if your plans get canceled due to reasons listed in your policy. Generally, trip cancellation insurance will cover 100% to 150% of prepaid, nonrefundable costs.
  • Trip delay insurance : Helps cover costs incurred if your trip gets delayed for covered reasons, such as flight cancellations.
  • Trip interruption insurance: Reimburses you for prepaid expenses if your vacation is cut short for covered reasons, such as a resort closure.
  • Emergency medical insurance : Covers medical costs if you need treatment for a serious illness, accident or injury while traveling.
  • Emergency evacuation insurance : Covers the costs of returning home for covered reasons, such as medical care, natural disasters or political conflicts.
  • Baggage protection: Reimburses costs associated with baggage loss, theft or delay.

Common Add-Ons

You can customize your travel insurance plan with add-ons to better suit your all-inclusive vacation. Available add-ons typically include:

  • Rental car damage protection
  • Adventure sports coverage
  • CFAR and/or IFAR coverage
  • Unique benefits such as pet protection, valuables and gear coverage, and more

What Factors Determine Travel Insurance Costs for All-Inclusive Resorts?

Determining the cost of travel insurance depends on your trip details, coverage requirements and personal circumstances. The following factors may increase premium costs:

  • Your age and any pre-existing medical conditions
  • The destination, especially if it’s in an unstable region
  • Your total trip cost
  • Selected add-ons and upgrades, including CFAR and car rental insurance

While some companies offer luxury plans for more expensive trips, you will likely pay more for comprehensive travel insurance. Your cost will also increase as you add more coverage benefits, such as sporting equipment coverage.

Is Travel Insurance Worth It for All-Inclusive Resorts?

Travel insurance can be worth it for all-inclusive resorts. Since vacations to all-inclusive resorts are prepaid, protecting your investment is important. From sudden resort closures to water sports injuries, unforeseen events can lead to significant financial loss. But the right insurance policy can offer peace of mind on your vacation by safeguarding prepaid, nonrefundable costs.

What Is the Best Travel Insurance for All-Inclusive Resorts?

It is important to choose a travel insurance provider that suits your needs for a vacation to an all-inclusive resort. For families, AIG Travel Guard provides complimentary insurance for children, along with add-ons for adventure sports coverage. Luxury travelers making large travel investments may appreciate the specialized plans and extra coverages offered by Berkshire Hathaway.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do i need travel insurance for an all-inclusive resort vacation.

While you do not need travel insurance to stay at an all-inclusive resort, a policy can help safeguard your financial investments. A standard travel insurance plan covers unexpected events such as flight cancellations and delays, baggage loss and medical emergencies. If your flight gets canceled due to a hurricane, for example, you could request reimbursement to recoup the price of airfare.

Does travel insurance cover medical emergencies?

Most standard travel insurance plans cover emergency medical care while on a trip. Since U.S. health insurance does not always extend abroad, medical travel insurance can help offset healthcare costs if you get sick or injured while overseas. You can also purchase COVID-19 coverage if you have concerns about traveling and the pandemic.

How can I save on travel insurance for an all-inclusive resort?

In addition to shopping for budget travel insurance , you can check the coverage you already have. For example, your travel credit card may include standard coverage such as rental car protection. Or, you can save on medical coverage if your healthcare extends abroad.

Methodology: Our System for Rating Travel Insurance Companies for All-Inclusive Resorts

  • A 30-year-old couple taking a $5,000 vacation to Mexico.
  • A family of four taking an $8,000 vacation to Mexico.
  • A 65-year-old couple taking a $7,000 vacation to the United Kingdom.
  • A 30-year-old couple taking a $7,000 trip to the United Kingdom.
  • A 19-year-old taking a $2,000 trip to France.
  • A 27-year-old couple taking a $1,200 trip to Greece.
  • A 51-year-old couple taking a $2,000 trip to Spain.
  • Plan availability (10%): We look for insurers with a variety of travel insurance plans and the ability to customize a policy with coverage upgrades.
  • Coverage details (29%): We review the baseline coverage each company offers in its cheapest comprehensive plan. A provider with robust coverage earns full points, including baggage delay and loss, COVID-19 coverage, emergency evacuation and medical coverage, trip delay and cancellation coverage, and more. Companies also receive points for offering a variety of policy add-ons like accidental death and dismemberment, extreme sports, valuable items, cancel for any reason coverage and more.
  • Coverage times and amounts (34%): We compare each company’s waiting periods and maximum reimbursement amounts for baggage, travel and weather delays. Companies that offer customers reimbursement after fewer than 12 hours of delays earn full points in this category. We also reward travel insurance providers that cover more than 100% of trip costs in the event of cancellations or interruptions.
  • Company service and reviews (17%): We look for indicators that a company is well-prepared to respond to customer needs. Companies with an established global resource network, 24/7 emergency hotline, mobile app, multiple ways to file a claim and concierge services score higher in this category. We assess reputation by evaluating consumer reviews, third-party financial strength and customer experience ratings, specifically from AM Best and the Better Business Bureau (BBB).

Understanding Travel Insurance

Travel insurance plans can cover both domestic and international travel. It could protect against something as familiar as delayed baggage (experts estimate 85% of lost luggage is returned to its owner within 48 hours) or as complicated as trip cancellation.

The benefits and limitations of travel insurance vary based on the company and plan. Above all else, this insurance coverage offers peace of mind.

Some credit cards offer a limited amount of travel insurance annually. If you need clarification on what your credit card offers, contact your provider to verify. These plans are great for cancellations and interruptions but may not cover more costly losses associated with unexpected medical expenses or emergency evacuations.

Individual travel insurance plans include this and much more. Travel insurance protects travelers from the unexpected when away from home.

Average Cost of Travel Insurance by Destination

Some countries are naturally more expensive travel destinations due to higher flight and lodging costs, which could increase travel insurance costs. Travel insurance will generally cost 5% to 10% of your total trip price, according to SquareMouth travel insurance .

Here's how the prices stack up:

How Far in Advance to Purchase Travel Insurance

According to an AAA travel survey , 88% of travelers say that reimbursement after a trip cancellation is the most valuable benefit of trip insurance.

According to data gathered by SquareMouth in the last six months, travelers tend to purchase trip cancellation travel insurance 53 days before their trip. Meanwhile, travelers without trip cancellation insurance will buy a policy approximately 16 days before their trip. Regardless of when you buy, cancellation protection can kick in to protect you against the unexpected.

Average Cost of Travel Insurance by Age

A traveler's age is a significant factor in determining the cost of travel insurance. The older a traveler is, the higher travel insurance premiums are. For instance, a senior traveler may need more insurance for health-related emergencies than a millennial.

When calculating your travel insurance premium, travel insurance providers consider the likelihood of a medical emergency.

Travel Insurance Rate Tips

Travel insurance rates through most providers fall between 4% and 8% of the total trip cost. Like the cost of flights, cruises, etc., rates may vary substantially based on the season, your original location, your destination, and other factors. This week, the average cost of a policy was close to $300.

To save money on travel insurance, tailor your policy to your specific needs and avoid unnecessary extras. You should also shop around to compare quotes from multiple insurers. Opting for an annual plan if you're a frequent traveler, checking existing coverages from other insurance policies or credit card benefits, and choosing a policy with a higher deductible can significantly lower your premiums. Always read the fine print to understand your coverage fully, ensuring you don't pay for redundant or irrelevant features.

To find affordable travel insurance, consider using online comparison websites like SquareMouth or InsureMyTrip to see rates from various providers. Other ways to save include purchasing directly from insurance companies, exploring package deals from travel agencies or airlines, utilizing included coverage from credit card benefits, and checking for discounts through membership organizations such as AAA or AARP.
