The Brisbane Cruise Terminal at Portside Wharf has officially closed ahead of a $20 million revamp of the riverside precinct , but not everyone is happy about it.

Key points:

  • The Brisbane Cruise Terminal at Hamilton's Portside Wharf is closed
  • The precinct will undergo a revamp next year
  • Multiple cruises had to be rescheduled to stop at the new international terminal at Pinkenba

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australasia said the closure was "unexpected, particularly at a time when the Queensland tourism industry is working hard to rebuild the state's visitor economy".

"We understand affected cruise lines have looked at alternative arrangements, including discussions with the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal on any remaining berth capacity," a statement read.

"Cruise operations are generally scheduled many months or years ahead, and certainty around port access is essential for successful cruise visitation.

"Any last-minute changes to itineraries will cause disruption to thousands of guests and adversely affect the cruise industry as it strives to restore Australia's cruise economy."

It is understood the Port of Brisbane will be able to accommodate some additional cruise visits at the new Brisbane International Cruise Terminal at Pinkenba.

Extensive makeover on the way

Developed in partnership with the Queensland Government, the Brisbane Cruise Terminal at Portside Wharf has welcomed more than 1,250 cruise ships, military and other vessels since it opened in August 2006.

About 3.3 million passengers have transited through the terminal over the past 15 years.

Brookfield Residential Properties' managing director Lee Butterworth said the cessation of cruise ship visitation marked the start of early works on an extensive makeover of the area.

Byblos bar and restaurant owner Nehme Ghanem said "while it was fantastic for Portside Wharf to welcome visitors from all over the world as part of the cruise terminal, it was an advantage for Byblos not having the ships port here during the pandemic".

Brisbane to host cruise convention

The news comes following the opening of the new Brisbane International Cruise Terminal earlier this year.

"Queensland has become one of our region's most popular cruise destinations and the opening of the new Brisbane International Cruise Terminal has made the city an important international cruising hub within the South Pacific region," CLIA managing director Australasia Joel Katz said.

CLIA Australasia's Cruise360 conference will be held at Brisbane's Royal International Convention Centre in September 2023 — the first time the event has been held outside Sydney.

"Brisbane's significance will only increase as it prepares to host the 2032 Olympic Games, so we're delighted that Cruise360 Australasia will be a part of the city's tourism evolution," Mr Katz said.

The new international cruise terminal is expected to welcome more than 80 cruises next year.

Ultimate Guide to Brisbane International Cruise Terminal

Finalised in mid-2020, the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal (BICT) is Queensland’s first ever dedicated cruise facility homeporting some of the largest cruise ships in the world.

The 9300sqm Arkhefield-designed terminal features a 208-metre-long wharf, 270-metre-long elevated walkway, parking facilities and riverfront open spaces.

BICT is located at 1 Cruise Terminal Dr, Pinkenba, also known as Luggage Point. The port’s close proximity to Brisbane’s Central Business District and its nearness to the airport makes it more accessible for both locals and foreign visitors.

The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal is only open during the cruise ship’s berthing time.

The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal was finalised in mid-2020.

Homeported cruise lines

Brisbane International Cruise Terminal homeports a number of cruise lines. Royal Caribbean, Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruises, Disney Cruise Line and P&O Australia.

How to get there

When the GPS systems may not recognise the official address of BICT, drivers can use Marine Road, which becomes Cruise Terminal Drive.

The cruise terminal is situated at the mouth of the Brisbane River. It is a 15-minute drive (12km) from Brisbane Airport and a 30-minute drive (21km) from the CBD. It is close to major arterial roads such as the Gateway Motorway and Kingsford Smith Drive.

From the airport

It will only take about 15-17 minutes (without traffic) to travel from Brisbane Airport to Brisbane International Cruise Terminal.

Guests/passengers may take a taxi, or rideshare like Uber, Ola, or DiDi, or pre-book a private transfer like the door-to-door shuttle services, Con-X-ion . Additionally, those who are traveling with a private vehicle may take the route via Lomandra Dr and State Route 25 (12.8km).

BICT is not currently serviced by public transport .

From Brisbane Central Business District (CBD)

It only takes approximately 29 minutes to drive from Brisbane CBD to BICT via Airport Link (22.4 km). And more or less 30 minutes via State Route 26.

Guests and travelers must also alot several minutes more to consider the traffic especially during rush hours.

Parking at BICT

Onsite parking at Brisbane International Cruise Terminal is managed by Wilson Parking. For travelers and guests, they may make their bookings via the Wilson Parking website: www.wilsonparking.com.au.

The plan to extend the car park of BICT and add an extra 340 parking spaces is now underway. The additional car parks will increase BICT’s total onsite parking to 1282 parking bays for passengers and staff.

In the event that onsite parking is full, guests and travellers can be dropped off or make alternative parking arrangements.

There are also off-site car parking operators and private transfer providers in Brisbane like Andrew’s Airport Parking. You can contact them on (07) 3268 4222 or Portside Parking on (07) 3630 0922.

Moreover, there is a 2-minute Passenger Pick-up and set-down area located in front of the terminal building. It also has two accessible bays.

Hotels closest to BICT

Brisbane is the capital of Queensland and Australia’s third-largest city. So, accommodation and hotels for cruise ship guests and passengers are not much of a problem. There is the Pacific Hotel Brisbane in Spring Hill which is about 16 km from BICT.

On the other hand, the Brisbane Central District also houses several hotels including Capri by Fraser, Stamford Plaza which is 15.7 km from BICT. There is also the Great Southern Hotel, Hyatt Regency, and The Point Brisbane Hotel which are approximately 16 km from BCIT.

Many of the airport hotels (Pullman/Novotel/Ibis) also offer transfers to BICT.

Hi Simon, about 35 minutes in non-peak period, via State Route 25 or the Airport Link from Brisbane CBD.

Thanks for the info. I’m leaving from BICT for first time in March next year. I’m staying in the CBD and Quantum of the Seas leaves at 4.30pm. As there’s no public transport to the terminal, I’m wondering what the traffic situation is like. I want to get on around 1.30 – 2.00. What time do you think I should leave? I’ll be getting Uber.

Hope you can assist. 🙂

Cheers, Simon.

The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal is the newest and most modern cruise terminal in Australia. It is located in Pinkenba at the mouth of the Brisbane River, making it a convenient and accessible location for cruisers from all over the world.

We are going to cover

  • where it is
  • how you get there
  • what parking there is
  • parking alternatives
  • getting around once you’re there
  • the facilities or rather lack of facilities (it’s pretty barren at this point in time)

Table of Contents

Where Is the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal?

People in Brisbane are used to cruising out of the Hamilton Portside Wharf. Unfortunately, this is no longer in operation for any ships of any size. All cruise ships now depart from the new Brisbane International Cruise terminal down at the mouth of the Brisbane River at Pinkenba.

Here is the location marked on Google Maps.

But how to get to the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal?

It looks very close very close to the airport but it’s not as quick and easy to get to the cruise terminal from the airport as you might think.

Taxis are going to cost you a few dollars and it’ll take you about 15 to 20 minutes it’s out in the middle of nowhere in the heavy industrial area and those little black circles just to the left, that’s the Luggage Point sewer treatment plant. The biggest sewer treatment plant in Brisbane.

In the summer if the wind’s blowing the wrong way it will be a bit on the nose and really stink out there. But looking on the bright side at least we now have a deep water cruise terminal where all the large ships can come in.

How to get from Brisbane City to the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal?

The easiest option from Brisbane City to the cruise terminal is to get the Doomden train from either Roma Street Or Central Stations and get off at the end of the line at Doomben.

This is as close as you can get on the train unless you want to go all the way to the airport. I’ve checked on both 13 Cabs & Uber and it should be cheaper from Doomben Station than the airport.

At this time there are no ferries up the river to the cruise terminal and no public buses. So it’s a train to Doomben Station and then a taxi or Uber.

You can check the time table for Doomden line trains at the Translink website here.

How to Get There From The Airport

The route from the airport to the Brisbane cruise terminal, if you’re landing in Brisbane, is about 14 and a half kilometres. It’s a 16 minute ride according to Google through some beautiful parts of industrial Brisbane.

Taxi From The Airport To The Cruise Terminal

The 13 cabs app tells us the Taxi cost from the airport is approximately a $40 to $50 dollar cab ride. One thing I need to warn you of. Make sure when you get in the cab and tell them where you want to go that they’re turning the meter on. There’s been a few scammy mongrels who are not turning the meter on and then trying to charge people $60, $80 or even $100 when  they get there. Make sure your driver puts the meter on the second you jump in.

Uber Cost From Airport To The Cruise Terminal

With Uber, the airport to the cruise terminal will cost you somewhere between $27 and $33 dollars. You do need to be a little bit careful as Uber has a habit on cruise dates of putting a surge on their fares to and from the cruise terminal.

I think this surge pricing from Uber is a bit of a dirty trick to price gauge. If Uber is surging try Olo or Didi.

Offsite Parking With Shuttle Buses

There are several nearby “park and ride” businesses. The most popular and well known is Andrews Airport parking in Nudgee Road, about 15 minutes from the cruise terminal.

Their parking fees are much more reasonable than the onsite WIlsons Parking and they provide a free drop off and pick up shuttle bus.

The parking is secure and I have heard nothing but good things about them.

Find out more here – Andrews Airport & Cruise Terminal Parking

Private Car & Limousine Hire

Another option is to use a private driver or a limo service. There are plenty of these to choose from in Brisbane with a wide range of vehicles from 10 seat buses to luxury European cars such as Mercedes & BMW.

The advantage of these services is the absolute door to door service and virtually guaranteed no waiting as they will show up exactly at the time you booked.

A couple of our favourites include

Luxury Transport Group

Black Luxe Chauffeurs

The ever reliable Hughes

Shuttle Buses

If you are coming to the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal from further afield and a limo is too costly there are plenty of services with shuttle buses running in and out, up and down from the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast and even Toowoomba.

Here is a couple to look into

Tic Tac Tours

Hotels Near The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal

While there are numerous hotels within a 15 to 20 minute drive of the cruise terminal, there are none within walking distance.

Your options range from 5 star Hotels like the Pullman at Brisbane Airport down to pretty cheap 3 star options in Hamilton. We have stayed at the Riverview Hotel in Hamilton several times and find it a great option. You can read about here

In the below picture, you can see how many choices you have and this isn’t even considering AirBNB.

How Long A Walk Is It From The Carparks To The Terminal

The distance is not an issue for people in their 20’s, 30’s, maybe 40’s and 50’s if your fit. If you have any sort of medical issue where exercise is a problem or you have any mobility issues the distance could be a big deal.

Here’s a video we did talking about the Brisbane International Cruis eTerminal. Skip forward to around the 7 minute 15 second mark to get a true understanding of just how far it is from the different carparks to the terminal.

I deliberately parked as far away as I could in car park 3 to give you an idea of what you’re in You can see the Carnival Luminosa there and you can barely see the cruise terminal building it’s just on the left hand side.

Carpark 2 and we are a bit closer as the cruise terminal is just that little bit more visible now but it’s still a bit of a hike, especially in Brisbane, in the summer when it’s 30 plus degrees and nice and humid.

About halfway down Carpark 2 there are some seats where you can have a break unfortunately there’s no shade but you can definitely have a break there and at least give your legs a rest.

As we keep walking we are now looking at the entrance to car park one, the premium car park. You can see the entrance and the roof area for the undercover parking.

Now we are up to the drop off zone. This is where family or friends can drop you off and the Ubers and Olas and taxis will drop you off.

In summary, Carpark 1 is 50 to 220 meters from the terminal. Carpark 2 is between 250 & 390 meters and Carpark 3 is a huge 420 to 575 meters just to the entrance of the terminal.

As I said earlier, for a lot of cruisers, these distances aren’t an issue but when you consider the general demographic of cruisers, this could be problematic AND there are no shuttle buses to assist.

If you ar planning on sailing from the Brisbane International Cruise Terminal on Princess Cruise Coral Princess read our review here.

Facilities In Or Near The Brisbane International Cruise Terminal

I started by saying the cruise terminal is in the middle of nowhere and I meant it. It is located at the very end of some of Brisbane heaviest industrial areas. The roads are terrible, it’s dirty, dusty and smelly thanks to the proximity of Brisbane’s largest sewerage treatment plant right next to the terminal.

To all the first-time visitors – Welcome to Brisbane!

There is now a small gift shop open from 8am to 3pm on cruise days, selling hats, T-shirts, souvenirs and last minute supplies. We also now have The Cruise Café which is located on the ground floor of the terminal building. It is open at 7am on cruise days serving coffee, light bites, snacks and hot/cold drinks.

Other than these outlets there is nothing within walking distance. There is the Trade Coast Hotel a few kilometers back towards Brisbane that you could perhaps stop at for a cold beer if you have a late check-in time but that’s really all there is.

Wrapping It All Up

The new Brisbane International Cruise Terminal is a huge improvement for Queensland as we now have the ability to provide berthing opportunities for so many more ships now.

We loved the old Portside dock but it was very limited in the size of ships that could get that fare down the Brisbane River. Any of the larger boats had to dock in the commercial port and that is no fun in any way.

Now we can welcome any size ship to Brisbane and we love this aspect.

But there are some negatives in these early days.

  • Limited to no public transport
  • A long way from anything
  • It is a long walk from the carpark and some covered walkways at a minimum would be an improvement.
  • Small shuttle buses or large golf carts to assist the elderly or those with mobility issues both inside and outside.
  • The smell from the sewer treatment plant right next door.

Despite all that, we are still much better off with the new cruise terminal than without it.

Your next step is navigating through the check in process. Learn everything you need to know about the check in and boarding process here.

We now have a favorite new ship.  Quantum of the Seas! What a ship. Loved everything about it including our standard balcony cabin which was fantastic. Check out our cabin review here.

It is located at Luggage Point on the northern bank at the mouth of the Brisbane River across Fisherman Island, near Myrtletown. It is located about 19 km/12 miles (a 30-minute drive) northeast of Brisbane city center, also referred to as Brisbane central business district (CBD).

With its 345-meter (1130 ft ) long berth, Brisbane International Cruise Terminal was designed to accommodate the world’s largest cruise liners over 270 meters long. The brand-new terminal building features two floors connected via travelators and two passenger lifts.

On the ground floor, you’ll find a tourist information desk, (accessible) toilets, a first-aid station, a cafe, a retail outlet, a baggage hall and a few other facilities. The first floor features security screening, check-in counters and immigration.

Outside the terminal building, there is a car park and parking for buses and shuttles. Free wi-fi is available inside the terminal and power points in case you need to charge your mobile devices (230V, 10amp, three-pin plug layout).

  • Taxi and rideshare services are available outside the cruise terminal.
  • There is only paid parking at Brisbane International Cruise Terminal.
  • There are no onsite car rental services.
  • If you require special assistance, make sure you inform your cruise line so they can communicate with the cruise terminal staff and arrange it for you in advance.

Brisbane named after Sir Thomas Brisbane, the governor of New South Wales at the time of the settlement, is the fourth-largest of Australia's state capitals. Nestled between the Gold Coast to the south and the Sunshine Coast to the north, laid-back Brisbane makes the most of its magnificent beaches. Wander in the lush Botanical Gardens , shop in the Queen Street Mall, or enjoy the countless cafes and restaurants along the banks of the Brisbane River.

Among older buildings are Parliament House (1868); the Central Railway Station (1901); the People's Palace , notable for verandas and cast-iron balustrades; the town hall; and the only two surviving public buildings from the convict past, the stone Commissariat Store on the river and the Old Windmill (1827-1829), later transmuted into an Observatory, on the hill near Wickham Park. City Hall houses an art gallery and museum on Brisbane's history and growth.

Earlystreet Historical Village is an open-air museum conserving many characteristic Queensland buildings for posterity. Miegunyah Folk Museum , in an 1886 stilt house, records the lives and times of colonial women, and Newstead House, 4 km (2.5 mi) from central Brisbane, dates from the early 19th century and is the city's oldest private residence.

Of much more recent provenance (completed 1985) is the arts complex on the South Bank just across Victoria Bridge. This comprises the Queensland Art Gallery , which has an interesting Australian collection, the museum, and the state library and performing arts theaters.
