With more than 500 exciting animals to see and feed, guests enjoy driving through the farm in their own vehicles, or riding on a horse-drawn wagon. Animals at the farm include species from six continents, and include some exotic breeds, such as giraffes, camels, zebras, and kangaroos. Also among the menagerie are horses, llamas, buffalo, and deer.

The Farm at Walnut Creek is also a real, live, working farm, with daily farming activities. Guests can expect to see farmers plowing, planting, harvesting, and completing other farm chores during their visit. A popular attraction at The Farm at Walnut Creek is the non-electric farmhouse, where you’ll find Amish folks canning, quilting, or baking, depending on the day and time of year.

Visitors can purchase produce from the farm stand, and you won’t want to leave your camera at home, so be sure to snap plenty of pictures during your visit. Special events are hosted at The Farm at Walnut Creek throughout the year, with two of the most popular being the annual Fall Festival in October and The Journey to Bethlehem, a live nativity, in December.

    About Journey to Bethlehem

  - - - - - - - - - -

Begin this Christmas season with an unforgettable new family tradition. Come and see what so many in our community are talking about. Travel back in time to first-century Israel to experience the Christmas story, the birth of Jesus of Nazareth.

We invite you and your  family to join us for our 4th annual production of a live theatrical experience, featuring a walk-through, outdoor drama; Journey to Bethlehem - . Like the Magi you can follow the star.; don't miss your chance to take part in this inspiring Journey.

Featuring a cast of over 50 community members in period costumes. We hope that your 'Journey' experience will be unique and fun no matter how often you visit.

This year's ‘Journey to Bethlehem’ takes place Saturday and Sunday, December 14th and 15th. Open to the public from 4pm to 8:00 pm Saturday and 4pm to 7pm Sunday. 'Journey' trail tours begin at 4:15 pm, departing every few minutes throughout the evening and continuing until the last guest is served.

2 Days Only - Admission is Free

Your 'Journey' begins upon your arrival at the census table to enroll and be counted in the census, as mandated in a decree by the Roman governor Quirinius.. For the second leg of your 'Journey', you will join a small band of fellow travelers, setting out on the outdoor trail for an incredible, live, interactive theatre experience.

Your group, led by a first-century Jewish guide will embark on an 80-mile, week-long trek (15-minutes, in real figures) from their home in the tiny Galilean town Nazareth to the distant town of Bethlehem in Southern Judea. Along the way, your family group will encounter a host of colorful characters - fellow travelers, local residents, real animals, Roman soldiers, shepherds, and more.

Guests are encouraged to participate by interacting with characters, sharing stories, and helping with hands-on activities. Your 'Journey' will conclude with a heart-warming scene in a Bethlehem stable with a newborn baby and a promise of hope. Upon completing the trail, guests are invited to shop in our small town of Bethlehem (located in the barn) where you can purchase baked goods and other handmade gifts from our local merchants, while your children pet the animals and make crafts. To finish off the evening you are welcome to warm up with hot soup, a hot beverage and homemade cookies and to take an opportunity to reflect and share their 'Journey' experience with others.

This free event is open to the public. No ticket is required. Everyone is invited to attend and encouraged to share the invitation with others. Donations accepted. We will be parking at Northmor (old building) parking lot again we have the Lifewise bus that will be transporting you to the farm. There is limited parking in the church lot beside the farm.

 What They’re Saying

My husband, son and I went to journey through Bethlehem last year and we loved it! It's so important for us to be able to teach our son the true meaning of Christmas, not just the Santa stuff and this is a fun and interactive way to do so! We will definitely be back this year, and many years to come! Thank you for creating this experience!

Journey to Bethlehem allows participants to experience the journey of Joseph and Mary

Portrait of Kevin Lynch

WALNUT CREEK - The village on the eastern end of Holmes County took visitors on a Journey to Bethlehem on Friday evening so visitors could experience what it was like for Mary and Joseph in preparation for the birth of Jesus.

The free event continues from 4 to 8 p.m. this evening, Dec. 4.

Registration on Friday began at Walnut Creek Mennonite Church on County Road 144, where visitors were provided a map of stops in the village that were meant to simulate a Bethlehem marketplace.

Because of the popularity of the annual event, there probably isn't any room at the inn today in Walnut Creek, either, but visitors would best be advised to call ahead to confirm.

The Hiland High School choir and a variety of carolers were out in the community Friday, along with seasonal snacks and warm drinks to add to the experience.

Visitors came from all over Ohio, and neighboring states such as Pennsylvania, West Virginia and New York for the journey.

"We've been coming for about six years. It was sad we had to miss last year because of the pandemic," said the Barnette family of Ripley, West Virginia, who brought three generations for the trip.

Violet Barnette, 8, said she liked the farm the best, but didn't like the mean king (Herod).

The family liked the history and meaning behind the journey.

Visitors could take a wagon ride through the grounds of The Farm at Walnut Creek, which featured the wise men, animals, a choir of angels and a manger scene.

Saturday, December 9, 2023 at 6:00pm-9:00pm Sunday, December 10, 2023 at 5:00pm-8:00pm

What is the Journey to Bethlehem experience like?

You will register/check in for your journey in the church lobby and be assigned to a tour group. When your tour group is called, you’ll continue outdoors where you will meet your guide for the Journey. You will visit the Magi as they follow the Star. You will go into the court of King Herod and bear witness to his evil surmising about the “new” King. Along the way, you’ll be able to visit several merchant tents and maybe even find a few surprises on the road to Bethlehem. You’ll see the faithful shepherds abiding in their fields by night and hear the angel choir as they announce with song the birth of their King. Then, you’ll visit the inn that had no room for Joseph and Mary. You’ll then continue to the stable and see the “babe wrapped in swaddling clothes.” And before your journey ends, you’ll also learn about Jesus’ life and ministry while He lived among us and where He is ministering for us today.

Preparing for your Journey

We can’t predict what the weather will be like for our weekend. We normally will hold the Journey unless it is raining, snowing heavily, or it is icy. If it’s cold, windy, or snowing lightly, we’ll still have the Journey. Be sure you dress appropriately for the weather on the evening you come. There is no heat at any of the stations along the journey, and only a few are covered. Wear warm shoes or boots that are comfortable for standing and walking over uneven ground.

If you have booked tickets, we will email you if there is a weather cancellation. You can also check our website each evening for any updates.

Reservations

  • Advance tickets are encouraged, but not required (registration will open in November).
  • We have reserved some walk-in spots for each tour, but there may be a wait before there is room for you in a tour group.
  • There is a limit of approximately 23 people in a group.

If you have made reservations, we ask that you arrive at least 15 minutes before your tour time to allow you time to park and get registered. The tours take about an hour or so from start to finish, and there are light refreshments served after the tour in the church.

For Spanish tours, please do not book a ticket, but instead email us directly and we will let you know what tour times are available with a Spanish-speaking guide.

Para recorridos en español, no reserve un boleto, envíenos un correo electrónico directamente y le informaremos qué horarios de recorrido están disponibles con un guía de habla hispana.

For further information or if you have any other questions, feel free to email us and we’ll get back to you as quickly as possible.
