  • Trivia The pontoon bridge constructed by the National Pontoon Adventure Consultancy with some assistance from Clarkson, May and Hammond spanned around 1,000 feet from the coast near Griminish, North Uist to the nearby uninhabited tidal island of Vallay. The "spiky building" Clarkson suggests visiting with Hammond - supposedly the site of the fictitious town of Hammondsburg - is in real life Taigh Mòr, which in English means "Big House". The well-appointed Edwardian mansion boasted running water piped in from North Uist as well as fireplaces in every room. It was built in 1905 for Scottish textile manufacturer, historian and landscape photographer Erskine Beveridge, one of the heirs to the estate of an internationally-renowned tableware manufacturer. After his passing in 1920, the property was inherited by his son George, who drowned in 1944 while attempting to make the crossing from North Uist to Vallay at high tide. With no heirs, the mansion was abandoned soon after his death and its staff dismissed. In the three-quarters of a century since it has gradually become a ruin, and its story has been documented by Scottish-Indian writer, musician and academic Arun Sood, whose grandmother Katie MacNaughton was one of the last to leave the island.

Synopsis [ ]

The presenters travel to South Wales and set out to make the most environmentally friendly car bodies using the platform of a Land Rover Discovery. May makes his car out of mud, Hammond uses plants, and Clarkson uses the bones and carcasses of dead animals.

Prior to their 11 mile road trip, May's mud car falls apart, resulting in him rebuilding the car using bricks which he has to create himself, out of mud, straw and sheep dung, turning the starting field into a small industrial brickworks in the process. While May works through the night, Hammond and Clarkson go to a local village where during the night, Clarkson's bone car is destroyed by a local dog. He is forced to repair the car with meat from a butcher's.

Finally ready to begin the challenge, the trio have to ford a river in their cars, which disintegrates the mortar holding the bricks on May's car together. A mechanical hedge cutter almost destroys Hammond's car since it blends so well into nature, and May rebuilds his car again – this time with hay and cow dung.

The three cars are then raced on a dirt track against three normal cars. The idea of environmentally friendly car bodies is abandoned after Clarkson's meat car is infested with maggots, Hammond's garden car catches fire and May's hay car falls apart.

Track Test [ ]

Clarkson goes on to review the Porsche 911 GT3 RS , comparing it to the BMW M4 GTS . Although he criticizes the BMW for sacrificing comfort for no appreciable performance gains, he declares that it better than the Porsche 911. The reason? Hammond owns a Porsche 911 and therefore it must be rubbish.

Conversation Street [ ]

Sting: Hammond shows off a freaky giant hand.

The trio discuss the new Ford GT, and the new gender sign traffic lights in London.

Celebrity Brain Crash [ ]

Jimmy Carr is the guest of " Celebrity Brain Crash ", but his jet ski collides with a boat on his way to the tent. To fill in the time, the presenters introduce an Audi TT Mk1 Quattro with Hammond hidden behind the rear bumper to show a new smuggling technique used by illegal immigrants, as well as using Hammond as an improvised parking sensor.

Tent Location [ ]

The tent is still on the quayside of Whitby harbour because due to Jeremy Clarkson 's home being destroyed, he literally has no place to go and James May losing the tent bag.

Clarkson, hammond and may explain why they're leaving the grand tour.

Mike Bartholomew headshot

We’re less than two weeks away from saying an emotional farewell to nearly 22 years of automotive TV hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, as the final episode of The Grand Tour (or the final episode hosted by them , at least), One For The Road, is launching on 13 September.

Now, in preparation for the episode, the trio, as well as long-time producer Andy Wilman, have gone into a bit more detail on why they felt the time was right to bring the show to a close.

The Grand Tour: One For The Road

Earlier this year, Clarkson spoke to The Times , explaining that filming the show is “immensely physical… when you’re unfit and fat and old, which I am.” He specifically mentioned camping in the Sahara Desert during the production of recent episode Sand Job as a particularly brutal experience:  “If you’re Bear Grylls you go to a hotel – there aren’t any hotels in the Sahara.”

Clarkson has now doubled down on that ahead of One For The Road, calling the show’s production “a young man’s game.” He also explains that the show is running out of new places to visit and things to do:

“We’ve done everything you can realistically do with a car, and the world has shrunk and that’s the tragedy. Years ago, we drove from Iraq into eastern Turkey into Syria, Damascus and Israel. We did the Crimea to Ukraine. You couldn’t do any of that now.”

The Grand Tour: One For The Road

Hammond, meanwhile, reflected on the process of bringing this iteration of the show, and the trio’s working relationship, to an end: “The way in which [Top Gear and The Grand Tour] took off was kind of beyond all of us. The only thing we could control was how and when and where we landed it.

“We wanted to say ‘thank you’ to the audience. This is the biggest thing to happen in my life ever. It changed my life, it affected my daughters’ lives, my whole family, everything. And that’s down to the audience.”

The Grand Tour: One For The Road

May chimed in on why the time felt right to end things: “I’ve always said that if it ends tomorrow, which it nearly did at one point, that I should just be grateful that I had the opportunity… But it didn’t end, it kept going. In the end, we got to the point where we said, ‘No, we must stop while we’re still vaguely ahead. We mustn't keep going until we embarrass ourselves.’”

Andy Wilman, who has acted as producer alongside the trio ever since Top Gear’s 2002 reboot, also reflected on why they’ve decided to end things now, explaining that things were nearly brought to an end after the three studio-based series of The Grand Tour:

The Grand Tour: One For The Road

“We came to an agreement with Prime Video where we’d just do the specials as we knew that the big cinematic adventures were what our fans loved… We could keep some kind of quality control in place by doing fewer things.

“We’re lucky that we’ve been able to control our destiny. We are now calling it a day on our own terms, and not many shows get to do that. Most of the time, you want to carry on, and you get told, ‘We don’t want you anymore.’”

“The Grand Tour” is about to hit the water

Viknesh Vijayenthiran

Season four of “The Grand Tour” arrives in December with the first episode to be a feature-length special that will see hosts Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond hit the water for the first time.

As we learn from the trailer that dropped on Friday, not everyone is happy with the decision, and understandably so. Given the troubles the trio experience on the road, their natural habitat, the dramas—and the dangers—should only intensify on the water.

The special episode, titled “The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen,” will see the hosts make their way down the section of the Mekong river that flows through Vietnam, meeting locals along the way and naturally causing some havoc, too.

It will go live on Amazon's Prime Video streaming service on Dec. 13.

“The Grand Tour” features a new format for its fourth season . Gone is the previous studio and live audience format, with the episodes to be filled with road trip and adventure holidays similar to the old “Top Gear” specials. Another episode is confirmed to take place in Madagascar. Sadly, the new format also means there won't be popular segments like Conversation Street and track and lap time content on The Eboladrome.

The Grand Tour: Where You Can Stream Every Episode Online

  • Top Gear trio, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May, returned with The Grand Tour on Amazon Prime after leaving the original show.
  • The Grand Tour evolved over 5 seasons, ditching the Top Gear format for adventure-based episodes filmed around the world.
  • The Grand Tour will conclude in Zimbabwe after over 20 years of automotive adventures, as the trio pursue new projects individually.

If you were around, conscious and a self-proclaimed automotive enthusiast in the early 2000s, then you should distinctly know three names: Jeremy Clarkson , Richard Hammond and James May. These three British car enthusiasts hosted one of (if not) the most prolific automotive review shows, that started in 2002, named " Top Gear ." Top Gear was a no-holds bar, British automotive enthusiasts' show that had glitz, glamour and the Stig.

They had several different segments that covered automotive news, hot laps with new cars, celebrity guests and eventually turned it into a touring series where they would globe trot, partaking in all kinds of adventures with different automobiles. Unfortunately, the beloved TV series did not come without its fair share of controversies. As a result, Jeremey Clarkson was fired from the series. James May and Richard Hammond subsequently resigned in 2014.

Fast-forward to 2015 and rumors starting swirling around the internet that the three automotive musketeers were going to make a comeback in a "Grand" style. By the time 2016 rolled around, there was an official announcement that they were coming back to host their own TV series called, " The Grand Tour ." The Grand Tour is a carbon copy of Top Gear that has the guy's own twist on the series. We're going to go over the synopses of the series, tell you where you can stream it and cover the fact that it may be on its last tour.

HotCars has sourced information from IMDb and Amazon Prime, in order to bring you everything you need to know about streaming The Grand Tour .

Here's What Top Gear's "The Stig" Now Does As A Day Job

Here's where you can stream every episode of the grand tour.

The Grand Tour consists of five seasons. Each episode is between one hour and 90 minutes in length. The first couple of seasons have a similar format to the original Top Gear. Instead of a dedicated location, they would film in a massive tent in different locations around the world. Finally, they ended up staying put in The Cotswolds, England.

When the third season premiered, they had completely trashed the idea of carbon copying Top Gear. Instead, they focused on making it a show of their own and really leaning into the "Grand Tour" aspect of the show. They sacked the studio audience, the tent and the hot laps for going on season-long adventures around the world .

When it comes to streaming these three famous gear heads, you have two options. It originally (and still does) air on Amazon Prime here in the US. Prime TV is included with your Amazon Prime membership, but if you do not want to buy a Prime membership for $140 a year, you can buy episodes in a pay-per-view format. You can also watch it for free (with advertisements) on FreeVee.

This Is The Best Road Trip Ever From A Top Gear Special

The grand tour seasons 1-3 synopsis.

Season one premiered November 18th, 2016 and is currently sitting at an 8.6 out of 10 rating on IMDB, titled: The Holy Trinity. The set-up of the first couple of seasons mimicked the format of Top Gear . The difference is that they re-titled the different segments to not only not be sued by the BBC, but also to give them their own style and flair. The first season had 13 episodes, and they went all over from Nambia to Stuttgart in Germany, engaging in their usual wacky antics.

They even poked fun at their last series. Whenever they have a "celebrity" on, they would have them perish in some horrendous accident behind the tent that was all a stunt to make fun of the "stars in a reasonably priced car" segment from Top Gear. There were hot laps, a news segment called "conversation street" and a Stig-like stand-in, who would actually show their face while driving the car of the week. Instead of the Stig, they employed "the American." Mike Skinner is his name, and he is a NASCAR driver that they would poke fun at while he was driving whatever car they threw at him.

The Contraversial Segment Top Gear Couldn't Air, According To The Stig

The grand tour seasons 4-5 synopsis.

Releasing in December 2019, the producers scrapped the knock-off Top Gear format and instead stuck to their name and actually took the guys on a "Grand Tour." No longer was the studio audience, the segments, or the Stig with a face. In its place, they traveled to Cambodia and Vietnam, and even to Scotland. The year 2020 saw the inevitable COVID-19 pandemic which halted production.

Naturally, the pandemic caused complications for filming, but the trio persevered. In order to abide by UK laws at the time, which instructed individuals to restrict who they mix with, they each purchased a caravan in which they could travel in whilst filming, which was also the basis for the camera crew. By following these guidelines, the GT team were still able to deliver a new episode.

The Grand Tour Turned To "Special" Feature-Length Episodes

With the unfortunate rise of the pandemic, production of The Grand Tour turned season 4 into shorter specials that highlighted different adventures . Each episode was titled along the lines of: "The Grand Tour Presents: *Insert Special Title Here*" This is where the true nature of grand touring came into play. They took a detour from their typical four-wheeled vehicles and traded them in for speed boats to travel around Vietnam in "The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen."

The "Lochdown" episode is a cheeky title based on the fact that the guys take three of their favorite vintage American cars on a trip around Scotland. The final special consisted of the guys absolutely destroying different French cars by any means necessary and even driving some strange plane-type car.

Jeremy Clarkson Isn't The Only Top Gear Alumni That Now Has A Farm

The end of the grand tour has been announced.

In November 2023, it was announced that the series would be coming to an end. In an interview with Variety magazine , Jeremy Clarkson actually stated that, "I’m unfit and fat and old." Unlike the end of Top Gear , the guys are going to be ending it on their own terms because, in all honesty, they've been doing it for over 20 years at this point. When announcing the end of The Grand Tour in the final 'normal' episode, Jeremy was understandably emotional.

They have climbed the highest peaks, crossed the hottest deserts , driven the nicest cars possible and are basically throwing in the towel. Maybe Jeremy just wants to tend to his farm. The final episodes are currently streaming on Prime and Freevee. The last episode will take place in Zimbabwe, but there has not been an official announcement on the release date. The three gearheads now enjoy unique projects of their own, such as Jeremy's new show, Clarkson's Farm , which is also available to stream on Amazon Prime. James May also enjoys a number of his own shows, in addition to having recently set up a gin company. Hammond runs his own classic car workshop, with a show on Discovery+, dubbed Richard Hammond's Workshop .

Everything You Need To Know: The Grand Tour Season 4 Seamen + Trailer + Release Dates

It’s official, The Grand Tour will return for, at minimum, another two seasons . Both season 4 and season 5 have both been confirmed, and that’s got all fans of Clarkson, Hammond and May very excited – and that includes us!

But these next seasons will have some major changes, which we’ll cover on this page. Let’s get into it.

Table of Contents

The Grand Tour Presents: Seamen

The first feature film of Season 4 is planned to be released on December 13th. Usually it airs a little earlier the day before, around 11pm the day before UK time.

After the news of James May almost being killed in Vietnam due to extreme weather, we knew the trio were filming around this area. But in this trailer they ditch the cars and head out onto the (kind of) open waters where they attempt to cross the Mekong River Delta without any issues. As you can guess, this doesn’t go to plan as Clarkson fails to steer his boat, James heads into reeds, and Hammond… well, we’re lucky if we don’t see him capsize his craft.

Reports from Hammond have let on that he contracted a severe infection while working in the water for this episode. He was administered antibiotics, but could still suffering from its effects while filming.

This first episode will run for about an hour and three quarters, according to Andy Wilman,  although Amazon has the last say. It could be cut further, but Wilman is hesitant to do this.

Special Feature 2

Little is known about this second episode, although we followed the trio as they tweeted about being stuck on a tropical island we identified as being Reuinion Island. We’re not sure if filming occurred here, but they later travelled further to Cambodia where Jeremy, Richard and James encountered the effects of global warming.

Because of this, Jeremy admitted that climate change was a real thing , to much our surprise, although he isn’t a fan of young climate change activist Greta Thunberg, who he has branded an ‘idiot’ .

We’re yet to here more regarding episode 2, although it should be released later on during 2020.

The Grand Tour Season 4

Where Can You Watch Season 4?

As always, it will only be available on Amazon Prime Video. Sign up here for 30 days free trial.

Can You Get Tickets?

grand tour water in car episode

Where tickets were available for each of the previous seasons for no charge, Season 4 isn’t going to have as much audience interaction. It’s a possibility that an audience may be required for certain parts of the season but this is as of yet unconfirmed.

Changes Coming To Season 4

Has the tent gone.

Yes, there is no more tent. Unlike Season 1, for Season 2 and 3, the tent stayed in only one place – Great Tew, England. This was funnily enough right next to Clarkson’s house, and meant the team didn’t have to waste time and money setting up the tent for each episode.

Season 4 will see the removal of the tent section of the program entirely. Instead, the trio will focus only on special episodes without an audience.

No More News Section?

grand tour water in car episode

Taking a guess, we’d have to say no. The news has been a loved part of the show since Top Gear , and while it wasn’t so revered as it used to be, it was still a favourite part of The Grand Tour. Unfortunately, we can’t see how the news would remain without a tent/studio and an audience to bounce off.

While it could still have a place on the road, we highly doubt that the news will be making a comeback.

Will There Be Celebrities?

Let’s face it, this was none’s favourite part. While yes, celebrities could join them on their travels, it’s highly unlikely. We’re watching to see the chemistry between Clarkson, Hammond and May after all, not other celebrities.

Where Is Season 4 Filmed?

jeremy clarkson season 4 ending

As already explained, The Grand Tour is only going to be a collection of special episodes filmed across the globe. So far, the trio have begun filming in Cambodia and have been seen in the city Siem Reap. Episode 1, Seamen, takes place in Vietnam and the surrounding areas.

Jeremy Clarkson has confirmed that they will be visiting Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Malaysia and Singapore.

Did James May Nearly Die?

grand tour water in car episode

During filming, James May was caught in a catastrophic monsoon on the sea close to Cambodia and Vietnam. They had to abandon ship but were thankfully not harmed. Horribly, four people died ‘merely inches away’.

This has caused an incredibly dramatic ending for one of the episodes, which Clarkson explained in a Q&A.

Richard Hammond Suffered From Major Infection

Video: Richard Hammond Talks About The Time He Almost Killed James May

Richard Hammond contracted bacterial skin infection cellulitis, while filming in the water.

He told  BANG Showbiz:

“It bloody hurts. It’s one of those on the list of c**p conditions I’ve had.

“I got it from climbing into the water and then I realised my legs were hurting. My feet were very red and it went through my legs.”

“You could literally see it tracking up my leg,” he told them further. “I’m at a disadvantage because it’s a much shorter journey to my vital organs. That would have been a really c**** way to go.”

Medics on the scene had to dose him up with a large amount of antibiotics to prevent the infection from going further, but this didn’t stop the initial effects.

“My feet hurt and I had to walk like an old lady, so the other two took the p**s non-stop.”v

Why are all the episodes filmed in SE Asia? I’m guessing the cost of housing, feeding and filming is much cheaper than…say E.U. or USA. My 2 cents.

I cannot wait for Season 4. I started to watch Top Gear early in the ’90 and remember I got my mom to record the episodes when I was away sailing as deck officer so I could watch them when I came home on holiday. Grate stories and even better humor 🙂

I can’t wait. I’m happy they ditched the tent. The Specials have always been my favourite. Bring on season 4 😋

I am looking forward to see… The Grand Tour ! 😀 *yeeeeeeiiiiii* 🙂

I am very pleased to know the guts will be back, only show on tv worth watching. Also good news that James May is alive and well, was it a case of slow being best in this situation. Looking forward to seeing them all asap.

Brilliant update and can’t wait to see the bus pass episode one day 😂👍
