Tuning the 3.6L engine

Hello all. Just purchased a 2012 Dodge Journey SXT with the 3.6L engine in it. Here is my question. The Dodge Charger with the same engine is rated at 293 hp vs the Journey at 283. Could Dodge retune the engine without any other modifications to get the extra 10 hp on the Journey's engine, and does anyone think a dealership would?

No - added horsepower is from intake differences and propriety software

set to different models that use the Pentastar , the Challenger version

produces 305 hp.

You could do that, however, remember, the engine is tuned for a certain air flow into the engine, just by increasing said airflow into the engine will not make a noticable difference as the computer will compensate. You need to make air intake PLUS intake manifold PLUS exhaust modifications to get more air in/more air out, then a custom tune on top of that. Cold air intakes on new cars really don't do much but make a lot of sound.

Ugh. I keep seeing you guys say this about cold air intakes... Cold air is compensated for with more fuel. The ONLY compensation the computer does for colder air is to add fuel to keep the mixture stoic. It's why the trucks seem pepper when it's cold our and slightly sluggish when it's hot out. Valve timing doesn't change on VVT style heads either. It WILL make more power. Granted it is less than you would make by also improving the intake manifold. If u leave the exhaust alone you'll get some extra torque (higher relative back pressure) open the exhaust and you also raise the horses(but lower torque compared to not touching the exhaust)

Cold air intakes don't seem to do anything for us because (although restrictive) the factory intake IS a cold air intake. Better piping and a wider snorkel run to and from and through the exact same places WILL however increase throttle response as well as horsepower.

Back pressure does not exist... Exhaust improvements create improved velocity of the exhaust gases which is what creates the additional horsepower. There is a pressure differential within a vehicle's exhaust system, but no "back pressure."

As far as CAI's go, I agree with you completely in that the vehicle already has a CAI. If you remove the stock system and put a short ram (let's be honest, that is what most people use) intake in you will without a doubt see losses as the warm air will not be as dense and therefore you can not get as much air into the engine. The stock system is a nice compromise in that it is a CAI and is quiet. If one wanted to gain a couple horsepower and a little torque (likely unnoticeable without further modification of the intake and exhaust) they would be better off adding smoother tubing to the factory box.

It's not that the the engine and computer will compensate for the CAI, it is that they are already tuned quite well and in order to realize any gains you are going to have to put in a LOT of work. Much more than a CAI or an exhaust.

I've just realized there's a sample 300C file to take a look at. I've been trying to get my head around the basics of Load, Fueling and Spark on the NGC system but it seems like a whole different ball game compared to Ford and GM. If anyones got some pointers or tips, please let us know so once the software FINALLY gets released, so we have some background information. What I've written is completely my own theory about tuning Dodges and could be completely wrong. Can't get to bed so wanted something to tire me out. Load: The load I've seen the NGCs use is Pressure Ratio. From what I understand this would be (Barometric Pressure + Manifold Pressure) / Barometric Pressure = Pressure Ratio. An example of a good breathing engine at sea level would be: 14.6psi + 98kPa [14.2psi - 14.6psi = -0.4psi] / 14.6psi = 0.973 Pressure Ratio Please note to get Psi from Map (kPa) is 1 psi = 6.8948 KPa, or use the HPTuners unit conversion tool. Boost PSI is measure anything over Barometric PSI just to clear things up. I only hope HPTuners will support the Barometric Pressure PID in order for us to tune these PCMs properly and get our calculations spot on. Good thing at my side of the world is we're pretty much at sea level all over the country so Barometric Pressure should be a good 14.2-14.6psi and tuning should be straight forward. Fueling: I didn't manage to find a simple OL EQ Ratio/Lambda table for us to command fueling with, so I've created my own theory. ( THIS IS COMPLETELY MY OWN THEORY AND IT COULD BE WRONG AS HELL, I'M WRITING TO BE CORRECTED AND LEARN THE NGC OS SYSTEM ) You've got FA Stoich: The only way I could understand this was to logically try turning the values into something readable like GMs EQ ratio. This is what I came up with: If I try change FA stoich into an EQ ratio of 1, the formula I did was: FA Stoich: 14.7 * 0.0694 = 1.02 EQ EQ Ratio: 14.7/1.02 = 14.41 AFR (Stoich is 14.7 but there could be another adder that sets the FA Stoich to EQ 1 actual that I haven't found yet.) Now the FA Power Enrich has a table set up with Pressure Ratio vs RPM. FA Stoich + FA Power Enrich: 14.4 * [0.0694(FA Stoich) + 0.0186(FA Power Enrichment)] = 1.293 EQ Ratio: 14.4/1.293 = 11.14 AFR By getting those AFR values at the end of the equation, it does seem like the results are believable and this method could work. I guess the only way would be to actually tune the car and change the FA Power Enrich to give me a 12.5 AFR. To do this I would reverse the equation: 14.4 / 12.5 = 1.152 1.152 / 14.4 = 0.08 = 0.08 - 0.0694(FA Stoich) = 0.0106(FA Power Enrich) So in my "theory" in order to get a AFR of 12.5, I'd change the FA PE to 0.0106. Once I get my commanded fueling out of the way, I'd work on the VE tables. They are set up as Load (PR vs RPM). Since I know how to work out what PR the engine at hand will be running at, and getting my commanded PE set, the VE tuning should be as straight forward as tuning a GM vehicle. Spark: Once you get your head around learning how to figure out the load of the NGC platform, tuning spark should be straight forward. The WOT spark tables show higher values then the MBT Spark tables, but once we get the software released on HPTuners, a dyno will come in very handy changing out the MBT of the vehicle and help us to dial in WOT Spark. Please I again need to state, I have never tuned a Dodge vehicle with a custom operating system. I have tuned them using handhelds, and what I wrote above is what I could understand from the tune file itself. If its nonsense go ahead and let me know, I'll be more then glad to change anything written!

PRatio is MAP/BARO. eg. MAP is 70kpa, Baro is 100kpa, PRatio = 0.7. It works for boosted engines as well. eg. MAP = 130 kPa, Baro = 100 kPa, PRatio = 1.3 Fuel is Fuel-to-Air ratio, ie. the inverse of AFR. eg. Stoich = 0.0694 FAR = 14.4 AFR Most of the fuelling tables are adders to Stoich. eg. PE table = 0.0177, the final commanded FAR = 0.0694 + 0.0177 = 0.0871 FAR = 11.48 AFR Saprk is pretty easy, one table for part throttle and another for WOT (PE). The ECT and IAT spark correction is a little funky but not to hard to understand. The big thing with the torque management is that everything uses torque management, the idle spark being the most annoying. eg. if you simply zero the torque management spark retard table, the idle suffers as the idle over/under speed uses a torque request. Hence, you'll notice all the idle torque tables in there for both throttle and spark. Absolutely necessary for tuning camshafts. The ETC code on the hemi's is also not very boost friendly as it is modelled on a flow equation that is referenced to barometric pressure and the throttle opening rate increases as the motor goes into boost. There are ways to limit this effect, its not 100% ideal but its driveable. I've done extensive testing using our own test vehicle running up to 8psi boost Chris...

Chris you really are good in what you do nice job, and hp tuners rocks, i am using it hard for fords and found some tricks

BTW, in the scanner so far I have 200+ PIDs defined MAP, Baro and PRatio are all there

do you think its posible to increase the logging speed in fords an a future i know using less parameters increases speed but it would be nice to tune with a faster data logging frame rate

Holy CRAP dude, I'm looking at a Chrysler file in my HPT Suite. I didn't realize there was a sample file to view either, I've just kept trying my own file with every beta download to see if it works. Now I'll never get to bed... I'll watch my Diablo tomorrow as it datalogs; I've seen that FA ratio and couldn't make sense of it but I'd suggest you're bang on with your theory.

On any of the boosted one's you do you'll want to turn off the baro updating. That helps with many issue's including etc.

the problem with the ETC code is due to the flow model they use to determine the throttle position. It is not designed for supercharging on the manifold side of the throttle. It needs a second pressure sensor after the throttle blade but before the supercharger to work properly (and the code to use that sensor).

The Srt-4 PCM does exactly that and actually uses 3 separate pressure readings, Baro- pre-turbo TIP- post turbo but pre tb MAP - post turbo & post tb Supposedly the differential pressure between TIP and MAP determines tb mass flow at any given time. It would be interesting to explore the possibility of introducing the SRT-4 tb airflow model to a Hemi PCM with the added input of an additional pressure sensor. 2004 Srt-4 Cal ID: 05029415AH

Unfortunately, from what I understand, the calibration tables may be there, but the actual routines are missing in the Hemi calibrations that take advantage of the additional map input. So unless someone can decompile, add in and recompile the code, I think this is likely not to happen.

yes although the calibration values are there, the code required that uses them is missing the SRT4 doesn't use ETC afaik.

Also,,,I'm trying to get one of our embedded software/EE to send up a resume. I've been tuning his 05 Hemi and hes a bit of a car nut so I would think he'd be a perfect fit. we only ~3 hours south

so does this actually work and we can pull 2006 300c chryslers? edit and flash?

The 2.0 TDi engine supersedes the early 1.9 unit to take power and refinement to the next level. Using VW?s highly acclaimed PD injection system and the latest EDC16 ECU controllers, the stock outputs on these are impressive even as standard. With 2025 bar injection pressure these engines produce high torque at low loads and enable great gains to be had from tuning. The 138bhp (140PS) variant easily achieves 188bhp with little effort. We develop all of our software on the rolling road to ensure accuracy in terms of both power delivery and also to ensure fuelling, boost pressures and exhaust gas temperatures are all within tolerance. Our aim is for maximum power whilst maintaining optimum reliability.

Dodge Journey P0660: Meaning, Causes, & Diagnosis

P0660 is a somewhat common OBDII code.  It’s generic, so it has the same meaning for the Dodge Journey as it would any other vehicle made for the 1996 model year and up.  

This code indicates that there is an issue with the bank 1 side of the intake manifold valve tuning control circuit. Common causes for P0660 include a bad wiring harness to/from the intake tuning valve, a bad PCM, or a bad intake manifold tuning valve control circuit.  It’s most commonly caused by wiring issues.

P0660 Definition: Intake Manifold Tuning Valve Control Circuit Open (Bank 1)

Here’s the meaning of the P0660 definition divided into its three distinct parts.

Intake Manifold Tuning Valve Control Circuit

The intake manifold tuning valve control system is responsible for redirecting air inside your Journey’s intake manifold . 

It relieves air pressure on the opposite side of the intake manifold.  Or, it can channel air down a completely different runner for power/efficiency purposes.

An open implies that two points of an electrical circuit are externally disconnected.  In this case, the two points in question are the PCM and the intake manifold tuning valve control circuit. 

The wiring between these two parts of your Journey may run through the CAN bus system, which is a wiring junction.  Getting a schematic for your vehicle (the exact model year and engine combination is essential) can make determining the cause of P0660 much easier.  You should do a quick visual inspection for obvious issues before doing so (more on that below).

Any one of your Journey’s modules can detect this issue.  Examples of different modules include body control, transmission, ABS, traction control.  If there’s a PCM issue , the other modules can still report P0660.

Bank 1 is the part of your vehicle with the first cylinder.  You don’t need to concern yourself with this if you have an inline four-cylinder engine or inline-six.

P0660 Symptoms: Dodge Journey

There usually are symptoms associated with P0660 .  Here are the most common ones:

• Check engine light
• Decreased power at the higher end of the RPM range
• Decreased fuel mileage
• Rough/choppy idle
• Difficulty starting

It’s more likely that the decreased engine power will be at the higher end of the RPM range. It can happen at any engine speed.  You may only notice the check engine light. 

Dodge Journey P0660 Causes and Diagnostics

Here are the most common causes of P0660 and a good order to diagnose your Dodge Journey in at home.

1. Check for Manufacturers Communications

Manufacturers (including Dodge) send communications via “technical service bulletin,” commonly referred to as TSB’s.  While this site doesn’t keep a database of them, they are easy to find online . 

If you click on the link above, it’ll take you to the NHTSA website in a new window.  Look for your exact year and engine combination Dodge Journey on there.  If there is a TSB related to the intake manifold tuning valve, it gives you a great place to start your diagnosis with a known point of failure.

2. Inspect the Wiring Harness

Check the wiring connector on the bank one side of the intake manifold tuning valve control circuit. 

Examine where it plugs into the harness. Make sure that there is no visible damage to it or the pins inside.  If there is damage, you may need to repin or replace it.  If there is corrosion, use a good electrical contact cleaner to clean it.

Now that you’ve established that the harness connector looks good, examine the wiring coming from the intake manifold control valve as far as you can.  Look for damaged, frayed, or burnt wiring.  If there is, replace the wiring in question. 

Verify that the ground wire is solid and free of corrosion where it bolts to the body, engine, or frame. Then, run a temporary ground to the intake manifold tuning control valve.  If it solves the problem, you’ll need to fix your Journey’s OEM ground wire.

3. Bad CAN Bus

The CAN bus is responsible for taking information from the various sensors and sending it to whatever modules need it (including the PCM). 

If the wiring harness seems fine until it reaches the CAN bus system, its pins will need to be inspected, which is getting into the weeds for most shade tree mechanics.

A mechanic would be able to use a specialized scanner to determine precisely where in the wiring system the wiring harness is open and causing P0660 in your Journey.  They could also check the continuity of the circuits.

4. Other Causes

• Bad PCM/ECM- While the PCM is rarely the problem with most codes.  If everything checked out with the wiring, replacing or reflashing the PCM can clear P0660.  Have a mechanic take a look at your Journey before replacing a PCM. 
• Bad Intake Manifold Tuning Valve- P0660 indicates a wiring issue with the intake manifold tuning valve.  But, if its wiring can fail internally, which will throw the code.  It’s not very high on the probability scale.

It can be difficult to chase down some of the wiring issues that can cause P0660 in the Dodge Journey.  But, it’ll often be caused by something that is easy to see under the engine bay.  There’s nothing wrong with having a look.  Good luck!
