How to data center travel in FFXIV

Finally, you can hang out with your friends from other servers

by Julia Lee

A notice saying a character is traveling across data centers in FFXIV

In Final Fantasy 14 , you can now travel across data centers within regions to hang out with your friends. Moving data centers is a different process than moving worlds, so we’ve put together a FFXIV guide to explain how to do so.

As of writing this, traveling to other data centers can take a long time due to high traffic , so make sure you’ve got your affairs in order before you start the process. (It took us around 31 minutes to jump from Primal to Aether at around noon on a Wednesday, for reference.)

You won’t have access to things like FC buffs or your retainers while you’re in another data center (similar to world travel), so you likely won’t want to be away from home for too long. You also won’t be able to use any of your normal linkshells.

To start the data center traveling process, select the character you want to move on the main login screen and select “Visit Another Data Center.” Once you do this, you’ll be able to select a data center and world to move to.

A FFXIV character on the home menu, with a small menu next to her that allows you to travel through worlds and data centers

Once the process begins, you won’t be able to login on another character or cancel the jump. After you finally arrive in the target data center, you’ll be able to jump from world-to-world using the main Aetherytes in Gridania, Ul’Dah, and Limsa Lominsa, as usual.

You can only jump around the data centers in your region, meaning that if you’re playing in the North American data center Aether, you can only jump to Primal and Crystal. European data center players can only jump to Chaos and Light, and Japanese data center players can only go to Elemental, Mana, and Gaia.

Final Fantasy 14 Wuk Lamat Voice Actor Calls Out Abuse, Death Threats

It's time for final fantasy 14 to kill another scion, in dawntrail, our hero lived long enough to become the villain, quick links, how to data center travel, restrictions when visiting other data centers, data center and world list.

The day that Warriors of Light have been waiting for has arrived — Data Center travel has finally been implemented in Final Fantasy 14 . This new feature allows you to visit your friends on other Data Centers or go and explore new worlds and see if the grass is really greener, take part in special community events, or just visit some old acquaintances.

RELATED: Final Fantasy 14: How To Visit Other Worlds

When you do feel like backpacking to another Data Center to make some new friends, here's everything you need to know about how to do it and the limitations in place.

Unlike World Travel, you can only travel to different Data Centers from the character selection screen , before you log in.

Simply right-click on the character you wish to travel with, and choose 'Visit Another Data Center'.

You will then be prompted to pick which Data Center and World you wish to travel to . If the World is not available, this is due to congestion and you'll have to try again later.

At present, you can only travel to Data Centers within your home Data Center — this means if you are on an EU Data Center, you can only travel to the other EU Data Center, while NA Data Center users can only travel to other NA Data Centers, etc.

Once you've confirmed your chosen Data Center and World, you can return to the title screen to await your travel.

You cannot cancel Data Center travel once it has been started and the time it takes varies depending on current congestion.

If you wish to Data Center travel to a Data Center that is not your Home Data Center, your character must be on your Home Data Center to do so. This means if you are currently visiting another Data Center and want to hop to the next, you'll first have to return to your Home Data Center before you can do this.

When visiting other Data Centers, your character will have <<Traveler>> beside their name to indicate this, while characters visiting from other Worlds have <<Wanderer>>.

There are a few restrictions that will affect you when jumping across Data Centers. Here's what you need to know.

At present, you can only travel to Data Centers within your home Data Center. So if you are on an EU Data Center, you can only travel to the other EU Data Center, while NA Data Center users can only travel to other NA Data Centers, etc.

How to Use the FFXIV Data Center Travel Server Transfer Feature

Here's how visit your friends with the FFXIV data center travel feature, and how to fix the errors

Using the FFXIV data center travel feature.

Published: Jul 05, 2022, 2:36 pm Updated: Aug 23, 2022, 12:36 pm

After years of waiting, the FFXIV data center travel feature has finally arrived, giving Eorzean's the world over the opportunity to visit friends from far-away lands without shelling out for costly services. If you're struggling with it, though, we've rounded up how to use the FFXIV home world transfer feature to play with your far-away party.

Down below, we'll not only go over how to use the FFXIV data center travel feature, but the long history of its development as well. The lead-up to this displaced a lot of raid and friend groups, with an infamous video of shocked screams and hysterics being something we'll embed down below as well. It was a rough time, but ultimately for the better.

The FFXIV Data Center Travel system is an extension of the Home World Transfer system introduced a few years back now. The original implementation allowed players from one server to temporarily visit any other server (or World) on the same data centre as their home world.

What this didn't allow for, though, was for players to hop between data centres. For example; if your region has servers split across two or more data centres, you were only able to visit the servers on the same data center as the world you created your character on or transferred to using a premium service.

The Data Center Travel system introduced in FFXIV 6.18, however, removed the region restrictions. You can visit any server on any world within your region now.

Using the expanded Home World Transfer system to hop to a different data centre is slightly different to the one you use to hop between worlds on your home data centre. Here's how it works:

1. Get to the Character Select Screen

Either log in and sit at the character select screen us the Log Out button to get there if you're already logged in. You can't hop to another data centre if you're already controlling your character.

2. Choose your Character

Right click on the character name of the one you intend to play. You should see the option to "Visit Another Data Center." That's what you want. Click it.

3. Choose the server

Choose the data center you want to travel to and the process will begin. It can take a little while if things are busy, so feel free to minimize the game. You can technically close the game and still keep your place in the queue, but you won't be able to stop the transfer once it's initiated.

Once you get the notice that the transfer is complete, you'll be able to log in and use the Aetheryte in Ul'dah, Limsa Lominsa, or Gridania to move to a specific server on that data center.

You Must Log Out From Your Home World Error Fix

If you're getting this FFXIV Home Server Transfer error when trying to visit another data centre, there's a simple fix: you need to log out from your home world.

We're just repeating things here, but it can confuse some players. What it means is that you logged out from a server that wasn't your home server. To fix it, you need to log in, use an Aetheryte to transfer back to the server your character typically resides on, and log out from there. Then you'll be able to use the Visit Another Data Center" command to visit another data center.

Unable to Submit Data Center Visit Request At This Time Fix - FFXIV Data Center Transfer Error 300

If you're met with the phrase "Unable to Request Data Center Visit request at this time", you've been hit with the FFXIV Error 300.

You haven't done anything wrong here, but there's also no real way to fix it. It basically means the game is under too much stress from others requesting transfers. It should die down in the days ahead, but launch day of this highely-requested feature means everyone is using it at the same time. You just have to wait.

If you're somehow surprised to see the FFXIV data center travel issues on launch day, turn your attention to this post on the game's official site. In it, the developers reveal that there's currently an average of 15k FFXIV data center transfer requests every minute. That's why it's struggling to work as intended.

To move back to your Home Server after hopping to another, you just need to repeat the steps you took to get there in the first place.

So, just head to the nearest main Aetheryte, select Visit Another World Server from the menu, and look for the server on the list with the little tunnel icon (or whatever it's supposed to be) - that's your home server. If you're unsure where you came from, you'll see your Home Server and Current Server in the bit above the list. Just select your home server and you'll be send home once the game has had a think.

When the world server transfer feature first came out, it was so popular that major delays were common when trying to server hop, creating long queues, errors, and issues.

Thankfully, the congestion seems to be small within the first few hours of the feature going live. It could change once we hit peak time, with errors sure to follow. We'll update with any fixes as the issues happen. But for now, here's what the team has had to say about how they'll be treated.

Basically, it all boils down the fact that server transfers will never take priority over people trying to log into the game.

If you're from a server that's getting a lot of visits from other players, your log-in attempt will always come before their visit attempt. If things get so bad, people won't be able to transfer to that server at all until things quiet down.

If you're not sure where you can use the FFXIV Home World Transfer service to get to, refer to the list below.

Simply put, you can transfer to any server in your region now. So if you play in Europe, you can visit anyone else who plays on a European server. The only players who won't notice a change here are those on the Oceanian data centre, given there's only one anyway.

FFXIV Data Center Travel Detailed, Arrives in Patch 6.18

FFXIV Data Center Travel Detailed, Arrives in Patch 6.18

Image of Josh Tolentino

Final Fantasy XIV  players could soon be traveling across new dimensional barriers. FFXIV Data Center Travel will debut alongside patch 6.18, according to the latest Letter from the Producer Live broadcast . Producer Naoki Yoshida presented details on the planned feature. It’s intended for players on one Data Center to be able to temporarily send their characters to another Data Center and play alongside players “native” to that Data Center.

Typically, FFXIV Data Centers are arranged into Physical and Logical Data Centers. Each Physical Data Center is located in a certain region. Those data centers are divided into multiple Logical Data Centers, which themselves contain various “World” servers that serve up instances of the game world to players. For example, a character might be on the Lamia World, which is located in the Primal Logical Data Center, which in turn is in the North American Physical Data Center. FFXIV Data Center Travel lets players travel from one Logical Data Center to another within the same Physical Data Center. That means the previously mentioned character from Lamia on Primal will be able to visit a friend on Balmung on Crystal.

The system works similarly to the World Visit system already in the game, with some additional restrictions. Players on another Data Center won’t be able to use their Free Company Chat and may have PVP Teams restricted. Cross-World Linkshells will also be restricted, but from Patch 6.2 onward, it will be possible to join them on other data centers.

To initiate Data Center Travel,  FFXIV players will need to be on the Character Select screen. Selecting a destination Data Center and World will cause the game to pause momentarily to initiate the transfer, and the transfer can’t be stopped. Then they’ll be able to load in with a selected character and play.

FFXIV Data Center Travel Detailed, Arrives in Patch 6.18

FFXIV  Data Center Travel will arrive in Patch 6.18. The first post- Endwalker patch, patch 6.1, will debut in April 2022 . The game is available on PC, PS4, and PS5, and its free trial recently resumed .

Final Fantasy XIV cross data center travel

Here’s how Final Fantasy XIV data center travel works

Image of Chris Carter

It’s coming as part of patch 6.18

Finally, Final Fantasy XIV  data center travel is coming in patch 6.18: the developers confirmed it themselves in the recent producer live letter !

The gist is that you’ll be able to “guest” as “travelers” in other servers across the same data center. You’ll queue this process up from the character select screen, then zoom into another server with the purpose of completing duties.

Final Fantasy XIV data center travel

Here are the main tenets of the Final Fantasy XIV data center travel system:

  • You can travel within the same data center: so from Japan to Japan, North America to North America, Europe to Europe, and Oceanian to Oceanian (if you need a reminder of how all the servers are broken down, y ou can find the full list here )
  • To queue up the process, you’ll do it at the character select screen, which will put you into that other server as a traveler (with the <traveler> tag above your head) – after that you’ll go back to the title screen for a countdown; it cannot be canceled, and you need to repeat the process to go back to your “home” server (you can see what the menu looks like above for this part)
  • The main purpose is to “challenge duties from players from those data centers” (so expand your static and raid groups)
  • Limitations include restrictions for free company chat, cross-world linkshell chat, PVP teams, and the same restrictions as the world visit system

All of this is coming in patch 6.18, which will be released sometime after the “mid-April” patch 6.1. It’s basically an extra mini-patch on top of the content drops and advancements that 6.1 is going to make. You can find the discussion on data center travel at 2:13:32 into the broadcast .

And in light of this, Square Enix is increasing the limit for simultaneous logins for the Japan data center, as well as increasing the number of data centers in that region from three to four (the new one is Meteor ), with a regrouping process coinciding with all that. The team notes that there will be a “total increase of a over 50,000 login limit” across the entire Japanese data center. This particular implementation is dated for July 2022.

Worldwide FFXIV Players Can Visit Oceania with New Cross-Region Data Center Feature

Image of Patrick Souza

The Data Center Travel feature in FFXIV is getting a new expansion that allows players to visit different regions from their physical location. From the testing period onward, players can visit the Oceanian Data Center from wherever they are, be it North America, Japan or Europe.

Data Center travel was introduced back in 2022 in FFXIV, a few months after Endwalker was released. It was the first time players from different Data Centers could interact without having to make an alt character to play together. However, travel was somewhat limited at first as players from NA-based Data Centers could only visit other NA-based DCs, and so on for different regions.

It all changes starting on March 24 at 8:00 PM (PDT) as players from all other three regions will now be able to visit the Oceanian Data Center until the arrival of the 7.0 patch with the Dawntrail expansion. This period will serve as an Open Beta for the feature, and it aims at alleviating congestion during the expansion’s release. Seems like they learned their lesson following the 4k+ player queues we faced when Endwalker was first released.

The feature should eventually be permanently added to the game in no time, assuming no big problems arise. And considering how smooth the introduction for regular DC Travel went, it’s safe to expect no huge issues. More info can be found in the official announcement .

As of now, travel will be one-sided (i.e. OCE players can’t travel to EU but EU players are free to visit OCE), but this restriction should be lifted in the future. Players are also expected to experience lag when playing in Data Centers physically distant from where they live.

The feature intends not only to further connect the community but also to breathe some life into least populated DCs, as players will now be able to directly influence its population, economy, and much more. However, as demonstrated by the current DC Travel system, many new problems could arise.

Party Finder for some Data Centers has dried out as players have quietly decided to gather into a single DC for clearing High-End content, for example. Party Finder for Extreme/Savage/Ultimate content is basically dead in Primal, while you can find hundreds of ongoing recruitment posts in Aether at basically any moment of the day. Endgame raiders are not the only victims, as regular content in the Duty Finder is also affected.

A wider Data Center Travel system could make these problems worse, even though it brings many benefits. A solution would be to implement a Cross-DC Party Finder/Duty Finder, but it seems like this won’t be the case for now. But let’s see what else Square Enix has been cooking for the next updates. We have a whole expansion ahead of us, so there’s still much to come.

PlayStation 30th Anniversary Collection

Final Fantasy 14 finally gets Data Center Travel in two weeks

Square Enix has finally confirmed when patch 6.18 will land

The Warrior of Light stands on the moon, in front of the Earth.

Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy 14 patch 6.18 will launch on July 5, with both the long-promised Data Center Travel option and a bunch of new servers.

Patch 6.18 introduces the long-awaited Data Center Travel option, which will finally allow players to visit different Data Centers within their own region. So a player in a World (or server, in more common parlance) on North America's Primal Data Center will now be able to visit Worlds on Aether or Crystal, for example. Sadly, this option does not allow for cross-region play.

We already knew that Data Center Travel would be part of patch 6.18, but alongside the update's release date, the devs have also announced that four more Worlds will be introduced for EU Data Centers: Sagittarius and Phantom on Chaos, and Alpha and Raiden on Light. (Revengeance enthusiasts are already having a lot of fun with the Raiden name .)

The devs are heavily incentivizing new characters on those new Worlds, with a double XP bonus, gear vouchers, one million gil, and 14 free days of playtime if you make it to level 30. Existing characters can transfer into the new worlds for free, and will also get the benefit of the double XP bonus.

Final Fantasy 14 struggled so mightily to keep up with its server load post-Endwalker that the game was temporarily removed from sale - and the issues were particularly pronounced in the EU region. Hopefully these new servers will help to ease the load.

Maintenance for patch 6.18 will begin on July 5, and as the devs note in the announcement , downtime is expected to last for 24 hours.

The next major content update, Final Fantasy 14 patch 6.2 , will get its Live Letter reveal on July 1.

How to transfer to a new data center in Final Fantasy XIV

Image of Michelle Mannering

As the new Final Fantasy XIV Oceania Data Center comes online, players in the region are looking to transfer their characters to this server. Even if you’re not in the OCE, you might want to move your character to a new data center with better ping or more friends, or you might have been  sitting there waiting to transfer your character . If so, here’s how to transfer a character from one FFXIV world to another.

Note: There is usually a cost associated with transferring a character. However, transfers to the new Oceania Data Center are free for a limited time.

How to transfer a current character to a new FFXIV data center

To transfer a character from one data center to another, you’ll need to do this on a webpage. First, make sure you have a current subscription. If you don’t have a current subscription, you won’t be able to get far in the transfer process.

Note that some transfers are also receiving errors due to the high volume of transfer requests:

We are currently experiencing a high volume of requests for the Home World Transfer Service. If you receive an error upon visiting the Mog Station Home World Transfer Service page, please wait a few moments and try again. Thank you for your patience! https://t.co/kHHTgaL9vd — FINAL FANTASY XIV (@FF_XIV_EN) January 26, 2022

Step 1. Mog Station

First, you’ll need to head to the  FFXIV Mog Station . The Mog Station has lots of services available. You can also update, change, or renew your current subscription here. Click on the Mog Station website and login.

Step 2. Home World Transfer

Once you’ve logged into the FFXIV Mog Station, click “Home World Transfer” under “Additional Services” in the left-hand pane. This will open the Home World Transfer Service. There will be some information on the screen about the service and some terms and conditions. Read these, and when ready, click “Accept the terms of the Home World Transfer Service” and then “Next.”

If you’ve recently moved a character, you’ll get an error message saying, “This service cannot be used within three days of your last Home World Transfer.” You’ll need to wait three days and then return to this step.

Step 3. Destination Home World Selection

After clicking “Next” in the step above, you’ll be taken to a screen where you can select your new world. Click the drop-down and choose the name of the new World you want your character to appear on. The new Oceania Data Center is called Materia, and the new Worlds available on the server are Bismarck, Ravana, Sephirot, Sophia, and Zurvan.

data centre visit ffxiv

To select an eligible Destination World, you’ll need to make sure you’ve visited that World from the lobby. To do this, open the FFXIV launcher, ensure you’ve updated to the latest version, and click “Play.” Instead of clicking “Start” on the menu screen, click “Data Center.” Now select the Data Center you want your new character to appear on, and click “Proceed” to go to that center. Even if you have 0/8 characters, the FFXIV Mog Station will now recognize you’ve logged into the Data Center and that it’s an eligible World for your character/s. Exit the game to continue to the next step.

data centre visit ffxiv

Step 4. Choosing your Character for transfer

In this step, you’ll choose the character you want to transfer to the new world. Click the drop-down and select the World which your character is currently on. Click “Confirm,” and a list of your current characters on that World will be shown.

Choose the Character you wish to transfer and select “Yes.” Ensure all the information is correct and click “Proceed to Transfer Confirmation.”

data centre visit ffxiv

Step 5. Character transfer

If everything above has gone to plan, you should be taken to a “Payment” screen with your “Transfer Application Summary.” Ensure all the details are correct and choose a payment method if applicable. If you are transferring to the new Oceania Data Center, you won’t have a payment option as the price for transfer is 0 EURO. If all the information on this page is correct, click “Next.”

data centre visit ffxiv

If you receive an error, read through the error and rectify the problem. Ensure you’ve got the latest update to the game, and you’ve visited the World you want to transfer to from the FFXIV menu.

Step 6. Wait

Now your application to transfer your character is submitted. You should receive a confirmation email, and the transfer should take approximately 5-10 minutes to complete.

Step 7. Play!

Once you’ve waited a few minutes, open the FFXIV launcher and click “Play.” Click “Start,” and your character should now be on the new world you’ve selected.

Every Main Final Fantasy Game, Ranked By How Long They Take To Beat

Final Fantasy has been entertaining gamers for more than three decades as well as upping the time on how long it takes to beat them.

With the game still boasting its unique set of Jobs and evolutions, fans of Final Fantasy games can feel right at home with mechanics, references, and storylines that give a Final Fantasy flair of depth in a usually unnecessarily lengthy MMO story. However, for newcomers to the game, the choice of a Data Center Server is easily one of the most difficult as these can shape a player’s overall PVE and PVP experience. In the context of technical choices, just which Data Center Servers are worthwhile in Final Fantasy 14 ?

Updated August 5, 2024 by Rhenn Taguiam: With Final Fantasy 14 having recently launched its Dawntrail expansion while also gracing Xbox consoles, fans of the acclaimed Square Enix MMO might be eager to see how their Warrior of Light can change the fate of Tuliyollal in their visit to the continent of Tural. However, players of FF14 might want to explore other parts of the MMORPG outside the expansion, such as reexploring the story until Endwalker, or even deep-diving into the game’s intense raiding community.

In this regard, players might want to consider some strategies when choosing a Data Center for their next character. These include checking bonuses for World Transfers and Character Creation, specifically based on World Classifications.

1 Consider World Classifications

Check world types to determine transfer eligibility.

Due to the community-centric focus of many Final Fantasy 14 gameplay activities , it’s not surprising for players to consider hopping from one Data Center to the next for various reasons. Regardless if this is to accompany a newcomer in their experience or to raid with a particular guild, players should check World Classifications to understand what to expect in their population and potential benefits. The game’s World Transfer Service changes depending on the classification of the World in question:

  • New World: A recently-added World containing bonuses for players who make characters in them.
  • Preferred World: A World with a few players that offer bonuses for new characters.
  • Standard World: A World with a manageable population.
  • Congested World: A highly-populated World that cannot be selected for Home World Transfers.

Limits To Home World Transfer Services

The game imposes limits on players who plan on transferring characters via the Home World Transfer Service . At its core, players need to spend at least 60 days with these types of characters to be eligible for the service:

  • Created in a New World
  • Created in a Preferred World
  • Transferred to a New World
  • Transferred from a Congested World to a Preferred World

2 Check Bonuses For Character Creation

Characters created in specific world types get bonuses.

When players create a new character in Final Fantasy 14 , they may want to consider creating them in a recommended World as they provide Character Creation bonuses. These bonuses last until a specified period, usually around the time the World in question is moved from a specific status. The Worlds affected by these bonuses are often New Worlds and Preferred Worlds .

Bonuses And Conditions

Players who create a new character in a New World or Preferred World can obtain the following benefits on their first login:

  • x2 EXP until Level 90
  • 10 Silver Chocobo Feathers , which can be exchanged for gear

The first new character in a Data Center Region on a single service account also gets:

  • 1,000,000 Gil

The first new character of a service account in a New World or Preferred World gets:

  • 15 Days of Free Play Time

Characters created during the free trial will need to purchase and register their copy of the game before reaching Level 30 to receive:

3 Check Bonuses For World Transfers

Characters transferred to a specific world get bonuses.

Thanks to the Home World Transfer Service , players of Final Fantasy 14 can have their characters practically transferred to another server without necessarily losing all their items. The only variability of World Transfers involves player housing, with specific rules that ensure players with existing houses or apartments can retain rights to their land while being reimbursed for their placed items.

When players transfer a character from a Congested World to a New World or Preferred World, their character is eligible for various bonuses if they meet certain conditions:

  • Free Home World Transfer Service , but not between two New Worlds
  • 10 Gold Chocobo Feathers , which can be exchanged for special awards

New characters specifically transferring to a New World will gain the following benefits:

  • x2 EXP until Level 90 is reached, but valid only for 90 Days beginning at the time of the transfer

Owners of Personal Housing should remove their estate hall and furnishings but should not relinquish the deed for their plot. Doing this before transferring will let them receive:

  • Reimbursement (Full Price)
  • 3,000,000 Gil for non-recoverable furniture

Owners of Apartments should remove their furniture but not relinquish the rights to their property. Doing so before their transfer will grant them:

  • 500,000 Gil
  • 500,000 Gil for non-recoverable furnishings

Should a character benefit from any of these bonuses during the period, then they won’t be able to use the Home World Transfer Service for 90 days.

4 Local Regional Data Center: The Basic Choice

Servers based on location.

One of the most important considerations when choosing a server in any MMO would be distance. As with other MMOs that require heavy processing power, FF14 is quite demanding when it comes to both hardware and wireless connection, especially when trying to play with the game’s more advanced graphics, regardless of FF14 Class and its flashy abilities.

Players need the best gear as they race to complete new High-End content in Final Fantasy 14: Dawntrail. Learn every Tank Job's Best In Slot here.

In this situation, the first ideal Data Center of the player’s choice is the one nearest to their location, which is their Local Regional Data Center . That way, players are treated with the best possible performance FF14 can offer them. This is usually the best option for newcomers or for those who aren’t looking for anything specific in terms of a particular server’s population.

Expectations When Choosing Local Regional Data Centers

With Local Regional Data Centers being the staple servers of choice for Final Fantasy 14 players, it’s normal for gamers to encounter an assortment of players based on their server of preference. On top of network stability, choosing a Local Regional Data Center may also affect the availability of potential party members, especially when choosing a different server instead of one based on location. Choosing a Regional Data Center away from one’s timezone may result in infrequent interactions with players. As with most other servers, most Data Centers go beyond their “perceived” stereotypes and boast communities that focus on raiding, PVP engagements, roleplaying, and even trading.

5 The Social Connection Choice

Playing where friends are guarantees co-op experience.

Given the nature of Final Fantasy 14 as an MMO , multiplayer and co-op experiences set the game apart from a traditional Final Fantasy title. In turn, perhaps one of the most practical factors for players to consider when choosing a Data Center would simply be where their other immediate connections are located. This way, their character will immediately exist in a space where their friends are, making co-op and raiding much easier in both the mid-game and the end-game.

While there aren't any direct "benefits" to co-op in the game, aside from being in a party during quests, it's the abundance of AOE buffs that makes playing with a group more ideal. Buff stacking is a popular mechanic, especially in FF14 , with its raids and its fair share of bosses having more precise movement, overbearing mobs, and exorbitant HP numbers encouraging the use of constant buffs to a player's rotation.

Expectations When Choosing Servers Where Friends Are

Depending on the level gap between the player and their immediate friend group, it may still take some time for players to be able to catch up with their friends to participate in specific raids. It's recommended that players ask for assistance in the form of power-leveling or being level-boosted by their friends to reach their levels much faster. Alternatively, a player's friends may also switch to their secondary characters so their character can experience the same growth pacing as their friends' alts.

6 Check Subreddits For Group-Specific Communities

Get into more local, international circles with similar goals.

Thanks to online forums and networks such as Reddit, players of Final Fantasy 14 may also base their Data Center of choice on where their immediate communities are. Various Facebook groups and Discord communities are dedicated to FF14 , and many more could exist depending on the player's immediate location. Joining these can allow players to get in touch with hundreds or even thousands of players at the onset, and they may not have as much of a hard time finding people to play with in both leveling and raiding experiences.

The Final Fantasy 14 subreddit has a dedicated post for existing Discord servers based on locations, interests, and niches. In turn, there are Discord servers dedicated to players in certain regions, interests such as art and theocrafting, and even raiding.

Expectations When Choosing Data Centers Based On Communities

Before joining group-specific communities, players should research whether these communities have specific requirements, especially in terms of level, playstyle, and even schedule. Many Discord groups tend to focus on either roleplaying or raiding, both of which have different expectations for newcomers. If players are eyeing a specific Discord server or community, it may help to confirm if there are newcomer-friendly circles within them so players can get up to speed without being pressured into leveling up quickly.

7 Eliminating The Language Barrier

Communicate more efficiently.

Fans of MMOs like Final Fantasy 14 know that it’s tough finding servers where people speak the local language. This is especially the case for players who don’t have English as their second or main language, or for those who just prefer speaking in their local language.

A good transformation can make a boss infinitely more intimidating and considerably stronger to boot. These are the best final forms in Final Fantasy.

Thankfully, certain Data Centers in Final Fantasy 14 do have players who primarily speak a certain language - a feature that may attract gamers who can understand the local vernacular.

Expectations Based On Region-Specific Servers

Should prospective players of Final Fantasy 14 be used to playing MMOs in servers away from their region of choice, choosing a region-specific server in the Final Fantasy MMO will likely bring them to communities that have speaking patterns and mannerisms based on cultures and traditions in these areas. English is still likely a second or third language among players, but it's a reasonable expectation to encounter guilds and raiding parties speaking in any of their native languages. When joining guilds, it may help to ask what language preferences they have to ease communication and avoid misunderstandings.

8 Casual Community Preference

Play with a more chill atmosphere.

Players who prefer an extremely casual Final Fantasy 14 experience would likely lean towards Data Centers with a player base that doesn’t demand as much in terms of PVP and Raiding from other new arrivals. This means choosing Data Centers with players that prefer a more all-rounder experience, giving a decent balance of Raiding, PVP, and PVE for everyone’s enjoyment.

Of course, given the more neutral-leaning nature of these Data Centers, players are expected to find a mixed bag of player priorities in these areas. Players who eventually develop a preference towards either Raiding, PVP, PVE or even Roleplay are advised to look for more specific Data Centers.

Expectations When Choosing Casual Communities

Unlike other Final Fantasy 14 servers, selecting a perceived casual community server means players may encounter more “chill” gamers and less hardcore groups. Compared to raid-heavy servers, players in these regions may be less invested in the game’s endgame offerings and instead enjoy roaming around, diving deep into the world’s lore, or even playing with friends.

This description doesn’t necessarily mean these servers’ players just lounge around, but these servers may not have as many guilds interested in grinding as raid-loving players would like. With this in mind, players who don’t want to compete with a lot of players in terms of PVP and scoring grinding spots may appreciate farming in these quieter, less stressful regions.

9 Raiding Party Preference

Players may want to participate in raids often.

As with most other MMOs, Final Fantasy 14 raiding has been an active component of its player base since its launch. Given how each of the game’s iterations has provided a fair share of complex stories and equally intense FF14 dungeons , it’s no surprise how some players have become dedicated to the endgame component of the series.

Players hoping to become a part of the more hardcore raiding scene and those gunning for frequent group sessions in the endgame might want to look into servers that accommodate such a population. These servers also fit players who focus more on reaching the endgame to have the most fun, instead of focusing on the story and side quests.

When enjoying another playthrough of a Final Fantasy game, be sure to pick up these highly useful items when they present themselves.

Expectations When Choosing Raiding Focused Realms

Selecting a server popular for its raid focus can easily get Final Fantasy 14 players into the MMO’s dungeoneering scene much faster than other realms. While the entire population of these servers doesn’t think the same way, the servers’ reputation for focusing on raids means players should anticipate repeated playthroughs of dungeons more often than in other realms.

Players should also anticipate other guilds and groups in these servers to be more invested in gamers who are quick on their feet in adjusting to dungeon roles. However, this more action-focused part of the MMO scene means there’s also the possibility of players overcrowding these servers, which can make creating characters inside of them much faster compared to other locations. Players who want to enjoy FF14 ’s endgame dungeons may find a scarcity of teammates in servers further from their original timezone.

10 Roleplaying For Full Immersion

Preference for roleplaying their characters.

Fans of MMOs know that the idea of roleplaying is usually reserved for games with vast open worlds and a wide variety of “professions” that copy real-life occurrences, such as in RuneScape and Albion Online . However, if lore-intensive MMOs such as World of Warcraft have proven, a game with a complex enough story could be home to roleplayers as well. This is especially the case of Final Fantasy 14 , whose story across its expansions has done nothing but escalate matters that put Eorzea at the cusp of yet another extinction-level event.

However, just because adventurers in FF14 are tasked to save the world doesn’t mean they have to do so on short notice. This is perhaps the point of roleplaying servers, as they’re built to accommodate the section of Final Fantasy fans who want to fully immerse themselves in the possibility of their characters becoming actual “cast members” of a Final Fantasy story through stylish gear .

Expectations When Choosing Roleplaying Servers

Players eager to fulfill their dreams of roleplaying as their character can finally “live” in Eorzea in these perceived roleplay-heavy servers. While roleplaying principles in modern MMOs remain the same in terms of mutual respect and playing along the same story, fans may want to find roleplaying guilds in any of these servers in advance before creating a character.

Familiarizing with various roleplaying styles of different guilds can give players a heads-up on the kind of stories they may encounter once they create their character. Knowing favored roleplaying styles beforehand can also make transitioning from scenes much easier. As with any other MMO, the occasional encounter with a non-RP-invested gamer means RP-heavy players should still periodically ask permission when engaging random characters in roleplay-speak.

11 Streamer Central

Likelihood of encountering content creators.

Considering how much of a hit game Final Fantasy 14 has become, it’s unsurprising how the game has had a lot of streamers play the game in their sessions. Such a prominent player has been Asmongold, notable for his witty commentary and casual playing style that has attracted both newcomers and vets of the game to his streams.

With that in mind, players may want to consider going to servers where their favorite streamers are staying to get a glimpse of the action or even get a shot of joining their characters in raids.

Expectations When Choosing Streamer Servers

Just because a player joins a server known to populate streamers doesn’t necessarily mean they can encounter their idols inside the game. Moreover, players who do encounter streamers such as Preachlfw, XenosysVex, and ZeplaHQ don’t necessarily mean they can immediately interrupt these content creators during their streaming sessions. Players who end up creating characters in these implied streamer-populated regions should anticipate being dragged into random interactions with both popular and up-and-coming streamers. However, these regions should still feel like regular Data Centers, courtesy of having active guilds, roleplaying groups, and PVP communities.

Upcoming Test of Cross-region Data Center Travel

data centre visit ffxiv

Since its introduction, the Data Center Travel system has allowed players to visit Worlds within the same physical data center. For example, players in the European data center are able to visit Worlds in Chaos and Light. As previously announced , our system is capable of facilitating cross-region travel, but we are still evaluating this functionality in light of the often substantial differences in market economy and social norms between data centers. We will continue to take community feedback into account as we consider whether this functionality should be enabled. On the other hand, many Worlds may experience login queues following the upcoming release of Dawntrail, especially during peak times. With this situation in mind, we are considering a temporary option in which a limited form of cross-region travel would allow players to play on a less-populated physical data center. Thus, to identify potential technical issues ahead of Dawntrail's release, we will be conducting a public test of cross-region Data Center Travel functionality starting Monday, 25 March (GMT/AEDT). Players connecting from geographically distant locations may experience some lag, but we hope you will take this opportunity to explore playing on a different physical data center.

Test Period

Monday, 25 March at 3:00 (GMT) / 14:00 (AEDT) until the beginning of Patch 7.0 maintenance * Test period is subject to change.

Cross-region Travel Available During the Test:

  • Japanese data center → Oceanian data center
  • North American data center → Oceanian data center
  • European data center → Oceanian data center

A character visiting from a World outside your physical data center will be labeled as a “Voyager.” This label will be appear in the character’s display name, as well as the Player Search feature, etc. * Updated 27 March 2024 at 5:00 GMT (16:00 AEDT) * Characters with a Home World in the Oceanian data center will be unable to travel to a different physical data center. * Please note that although characters will be able to return to their Home World from the Oceanian data center even after the test has concluded, their ability to return may be temporarily impeded by periods of server congestion, including any that may arise during the release of Dawntrail. * Please note that your Lodestone character data will not account for friend list, blacklist, and cross-world linkshell registrations made while visiting another physical data center. Additionally, you cannot join Community Finder recruitments for cross-world linkshells on other physical data centers.

Final Fantasy XIV with its new Endwalker Expansion, will add a brand new feature highly demanded by players worldwide, the Data Center Travel feature. This is similar but different from the currently implemented World Travel System, which lets you move your character from one World to another without logging out of FF XIV.

New Data Center in Oceania announced (May 15, 2021 update)

On the Final Fantasy XIV Digital Fanfest first stream on May 15, Square Enix announced the game is opening a new Oceania Data Center for the release of Endwalker on November 23.

Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker - What's the upcoming Data Center Travel?

The Data Center Travel will allow you to go play on other Data Center than the ones you usually play and first made your characters on.

Basically this means anyone anywhere in the world will be able to play with each other. Friends who are separated by the oceans will finally be able to play Final Fantasy XIV together even if they didn't start out on the same Data Server. This is huge and great news for all players and FF XIV fans around the world.

  • FF7 REMAKE PART 2 - Latest comments and details from Tetsuya Nomura

How the Data Center Travel feature will work

Here's how it works: before logging into Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker , in the character select screen, you'll be able to use the Data Center Travel, and choose which Data Center to login into.

YoshiP mentioned they wanted to make it so you don't need to logout, like with the World Travel System, but that's too complicated with how the servers are built.

However, there are certain functions that will be disabled when using the Data Center Travel in Final Fantasy XIV Endwalker . Overall, there will be more restrictions than when using the World Travel System. But you'll be able to visit your friends in other Data Centers, play with them, do content with them, take screenshots, etc.

YoshiP also mentioned there will be simulations to check how it will affect each Data Centers' economy, but it should be negligible. So players shouldn't worry.

Be sure to check out our full summary of the Final Fanasy XIV Endwalker Announcement Showcase, with details on new Jobs, new Story contents, and more.
