The race: The offical start was given at 11:58 AM to 157 riders.

Here's the race organizer's Paris-Tours report: A crazy race, a completely undecided scenario in the hot dust of the vineyard paths, and a completely new winner: it's Riley Sheehan, a trainee with Israel-Premier Tech, who won this 117th Paris-Tours after a very close sprint against his four breakaway companions. It's the first victory for the 23-year-old American. A major first, too, for the United States, which had never won on Avenue de Grammont. The heroic Lewis Askey (Groupama – FDJ) who led all day, took second place ahead of Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno X).

The race: 157 riders set off in the shadow of the imposing Chartres Cathedral, bathed in bright sunlight, for the 117th edition of Paris-Tours. It was an emotional start for several riders, including Greg Van Avermaet (AG2R Citroën) and Tony Gallopin (Lidl-Trek), who pinned on their race numbers for the last time in their careers. After covering more than thirty kilometers at high speed, a group of five riders finally broke away: Lewis Askey (Groupama FDJ), Théo Delacroix (Intermarché Circus Wanty), Joseph Rosskopf (Q36.5), Maxime Jarnet (Van Rysel – Roubaix Lille Metropole), and Axel Narbonne Zuccarelli (Nice Metropole Côte d'Azur). The gap never reached extravagant proportions before the first challenges of the day.

Arnaud De Lie eliminated due to a mechanical issue The Jumbo-Visma team of Christophe Laporte, the Lotto Dstny team of Arnaud De Lie and the Bora-Hansgrohe team of Jordi Meeus were controlling the offensive before entering the first vineyard path, Limeray, at 67.1 kilometers from the finish. In the ninth sector, the Lotto Dstny leader suffered a puncture, as did Jordi Meeus, who got caught in a crash. The peloton fragmented completely, marked by multiple attacks and punctures. In the dust, European champion Christophe Laporte, Greg Van Avermaet, Magnus Cort Nielsen, or Jasper Stuyven, to name a few, lost precious energy trying to get back into contention after mechanical problems. Arnaud De Lie, on the other hand, faced numerous setbacks, leaving his hopes in the dust.

Heroic performance by Lewis Askey In front, the impressive Lewis Askey, only twenty-two years old, put up a strong resistance as the moves kept coming. Biniam Girmay (Intermarché – Circus Wanty) tried, as did Matteo Trentin (UAE) and John Degenkolb (DSM-Firmenich). There was no letup. The British rider was finally caught on the last difficulty of the day, the Rochecobron climb, by a group of four riders who had broken away about twenty kilometers from the finish: Olivier Le Gac (Groupama FDJ), Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno X), Riley Sheehan (Israel) and Joris Delbove (St Michel). Behind them, the Arkea Samsic team of the top favorite Arnaud Démare made the effort to close the gap before the famous Avenue de Grammont.

A first victory for the United States However, their efforts were in vain as the breakaway group contested the victory in the shade of the plane trees. It was the American Riley Sheehan, only twenty-three years old and a trainee with Israel – Premier Tech, who proved to be the strongest at the end of an extremely close sprint.

2023 Tour de France route

From the Basque Country to Paris and all the stages in between

Tour de France 2023 map

The 2023 Tour de France got underway on July 1st in Bilbao, Spain with another demanding route that includes only a single 22km hilly time trial in the Alps and mountain stages in all five of France’s mountain ranges. From the Grand Départ in the Basque Country to the finish in Paris, Cyclingnews has all the route details.

The very limited amount of time trialling and preponderance of mountains no doubt suits French riders  Thibaut Pinot , David Gaudu and Romain Bardet. As a result, Remco Evenepoel, Primoz Roglič and Geraint Thomas targeted the Giro d’Italia, which had three times the amount of time trialling and fewer mountains.

Official information from race organiser ASO claimed the 3,404km route includes eight flat stages for the sprinters, four hilly stages suited to breakaways and eight mountain stages. Four of these include summit finishes: in the Pyrenees at Cauterets-Cambasque, on the legendary Puy de Dôme volcano in the Massif Central, on the Grand Colombier in the Jura and at Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc in the Alps.

Tour de France 2023 route revealed Tour de France stage-by-stage previews 2023 Tour de France to start in the Basque Country 2023 Tour de France set to return to Puy de Dome mountain finish

The other mountain stages are also extremely difficult, even if some are short and extra intense.

Stage 14 to Morzine includes 4,200m of climbing, alongside the mighty Col de Joux Plane and its testing descent to the finish. Stage 15 ends with the 11% ‘wall’ of Côte des Amerands and then the 7km 7.7% climb up to Saint-Gervais in view of Mont-Blanc.

Compressed profiles of the final week of the Tour de France

Stage 17 to Courchevel is arguably the queen stage, climbing the 2,304m-high Col de la Loze and then descends to finish on the altiport runway. Stage 20 is a final brutal multi-mountain stage in the Vosges between Belfort and Le Markstein ski resort.

The only time trial is on stage 16 in the Arve Valley near Sallanches after the second rest day, but the 22km route between Passy and Combloux will test riders' bike handling skills and climbing as much as their time trialling. The stage includes the Côte de Domancy, where Bernard Hinault forged his 1980 Worlds victory, and which also featured as part of the final week time trial in the 2016 Tour.

2022 Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard was arguably the best climber of the last two editions of the Tour and he appears to have plenty of opportunities to go on the attack on the steep ascents in 2023.

Two-time winner  Tadej Pogačar  will no doubt relish the route on offer for next July’s challenge against Vingegaard, Jumbo-Visma, Ineos Grenadiers and anyone else.

AIG Women's Open

A little adversity and a new putter have Nelly Korda looking a lot like the dominant player she was to start 2024

2168040430

Ross Parker/R&A

ST. ANDREWS, Scotland — The leaderboard has forever been a measure of a golf course’s quality. And this week the Old Course at St. Andrews is living up to its reputation as not only the game’s most storied venue, but also a test worthy of a major championship. It is a place where the cream tends to rise. And, sure enough, through 36 holes of the AIG Women’s Open, World No. 1 Nelly Korda is already on eight under par, three strokes clear of defending champion Lilia Vu and last year’s runner-up, Charley Hull. Another two shots back is Olympic gold medal winner Lydia Ko and 2022 champion at Muirfield Ashleigh Buhai.

Not too shabby.

“It's super cool,” was Ko’s verdict on the players she is chasing. “Obviously Nelly is playing amazing and there's just so many other big names that are playing great. I think it's exciting for golf when players from different countries are all in contention.”

Still, it is Korda who has shone brightest amongst that superior litany of stars looking down on the rest. Only once in her two rounds has the 26-year-old dropped a shot to par. Nine birdies dot her scorecards. In prevailing conditions—strong winds and heavy showers—that have done nothing for the case that Scotland really does have a summer, Korda’s creative shot-making and solid putting has been extraordinary indeed.

More From Golf Digest

course paris tours 2023

She certainly seemed pleased after closing with one last birdie on the drivable par-4 ninth (her 18th). Which is no surprise. In contrast with the performances that saw her win six times in seven LPGA events between late-January and mid-May, Korda’s more recent efforts are best described as “fruitless.” Three consecutive missed cuts—two in major championships—immediately followed those six victories, the nadir perhaps the ignominious 80 she shot on the opening day of the U.S. Women’s Open.

More recently, things have been steady, average more than awesome. A T-26 finish in another major, the Amundi Evian Championship, was followed by a T-22 at the recent Olympics in Paris. In contrast to that mediocrity, she has clearly found something in her game this week, quite apart from the new TaylorMade Spider putter that found its way into her bag on the eve of this event. Perhaps most impressively however, Korda has adapted to and fully accepted the changeable nature of the meteorological conditions that have dominated discussions so far.

“I warmed up in the rain this morning,” she said. “Yesterday it was just brutally windy. Then today rained until probably my second or third hole [she started on No. 10]. It was pretty calm the front nine, and then once we got to the 18th and the first it really started to get pumping. I didn't really take advantage of the calmer conditions on my front nine, the back nine. But I played some really solid golf and I'm happy with that.”

All of which is fine. But it is an assessment that does nothing to reveal the source of Korda’s rediscovered form.

“I think that's just life in general or, you know, sports,” was her pre-tournament explanation for any and all of the above. “You're never going to shoot straight up. You're going to go up. You're going to go down. I think the best part of the downs is that you learn so much about yourself. It’s always a learning opportunity, and I enjoy that. I always try to think of everything in a positive mindset. Compared to the start of the year, I've obviously had some finishes that weren't the best. But at the end of the day, I'm still learning and I'm still getting better from it.”

2168015663

Korda needed only 30 putts Friday en route to a second-roung 68 that let her grab the 36 holes at eight under.

Luke Walker

Two days on, Korda was justifiably giving herself a little more credit, pointing out the range of grasses, conditions and courses on which she has already won this year.

“You always have to adapt,” she said. “That's the same in life. You're always adapting to your situation at hand. I think that's what's so fun about links golf. I am literally starting shots 30 yards left of my target. I’m not a fade player but I'm hitting massive fades. I think it's fun hitting these little low drivers, too. I enjoy links golf a lot. Obviously, every year that I get to play it, I learn a little bit more about it, too.”

All of which is surely part of a winning formula. But so is putting. As Hull was quick to point out in the wake of the even-par 72 she shot in the company of Korda and Vu, she had used her putter 36 times in the second round, six times more than the leader.

“What am I, three shots behind Nelly?” asked the endearingly scatter-brained Englishwoman. “That's nothing going into the weekend especially on this golf course. I left a lot of putts out there. Nelly had 30 putts, and I had 36 putts. So that's six shots I've lost to her on the greens. I feel like I'm equally hitting it as good, she just holed a few more putts than me today. I think Lilia is the one to watch as well, because when it gets windy she kind of just sticks in there. She's a good scrambler.”

Indeed. But so is Korda, once again the player to beat.
