After we did much research, Davor helped us achieve this goal by customizing our tour. We will always be grateful to him for his part in this unforgetable experience. We also had a wonderful time exploring Zagreb with him. Our second goal was to see more of this beautiful country. Jakov introduced us to a whole new world in Split and Dobrovnik. We visited Plitvice National Park which to me could have easily been designated as one of the wonders of the world. Its beauty is unsurpaced with its waterfalls, lakes and forested hills. Our days in Split and Dobrovnik were wonderful and exciting. Jakov made each day an adventure. He also showed a genuine concern for our well being. Both he and Davor treated us like family and yet were highly professional. We were amazed at their historical knowledge which they were eager to share with us. We can never thank them enough for this unforgetable experience. Carolyn Brian (U.S.A.)

Italy certainly isn’t short of stunning coastal towns, but Polignano a Mare still stands out as one of the most beautiful. From the dramatic cliffside views over the Adriatic Sea to the cute pebble beach, nestled between the cliffs, this is one of the most picturesque spots in Italy. While there are plenty of things that are must-dos while in Polignano a Mare – try to get a table at Grotta Palazzese, a cave that has been turned into a restaurant – one of the best activities is a boat tour. Here are three of the best in Polignano a Mare.

Polignano a Mare: Boat Cruise to Scenic Caves with Prosecco

Polignano a Mare is a swish kind of place, and a speedboat ride just seems to fit this Italian town perfectly. This tour, in a glamorous motorboat, is the perfect romantic excursion. As you cruise the shoreline you’ll catch a glimpse of some of Polignano a Mare’s hidden caves, which are not easily accessible from the beaches. You’ll see Grotta Palazzese, Grotta delle Rondinelle, Grotta Azzurra, Grotta Ardito and the Caves of the Lovers, all while sipping Prosecco. There is also time during the 1.5 hour trip for a spot of sunbathing – this really is the dolce vita. From €45.00.

The boat passes many of Polignano a Mare’s famous caves, as well as the rock of the Hermit (San Paolo islet), cala Portalga and then a stop on one of the beaches between Polignano a Mare and Monopoli, where you can take a dip in the turquoise waters of the Adriatic Sea. From €65.00.

Polignano a Mare – Exclusive Private Boat Tour 3h

For something a little bit boujee, how about this exclusive private boat tour? The trip takes to the waters around Polignano a Mare, visiting the caves and exploring hidden treasures around the town. Highlights along the way are the statue of Domenico Modugno, the Belvedere Terrazza Santo Stefano, Lama Monachile, a splendid coastal cove famous for its breathtaking beauty, and Grotta Palazzese. Almost everything you need is included, from snacks to alcoholic drinks – that includes a spot of Prosecco – to coffee and bottled water. Dad and toddler rescued by Boston Duck Tours boat after falling into Charles River

Police said the father jumped in after the child squeezed through a railing.

A father and his young child are very thankful for Boston's famous duck boats after being rescued Monday morning following a fall into the Charles River, officials said.

The child, who is under 2, "squeezed through the railing" behind the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge and fell into the river, according to Massachusetts State Police.

"The child's father jumped into the river and secured the child," police said.

A passing Boston Duck Tours boat then rescued the pair, bringing the two on board and dropping them off at a nearby dock.

The child was transported to a local hospital as a precautionary measure, police said.

A man who witnessed the incident, Dominic Demasi, captured photos of the man and young child in the river.

"I heard some people screaming," Demasi told Boston ABC affiliate WCVB . "The duck boat happened to be within 50 feet and they just went right over, helped them out."

MORE: A look back at past deadly duck tour incidents

The duck boat's co-captains, Michael Rosario and Kevin O'Neill, told WCVB they first realized something was wrong when they saw people waving them down for help.

They threw the life ring out to the dad and brought the boat closer, then lowered the vessel's ladder to let them onboard, they said. They then wrapped the child, who they said was safe but cold, in a Mylar blanket.

"He was in such a panic -- he just wanted to get his child on board," Rosario said of the father.

In a statement on social media, Boston Duck Tours CEO Cindy Brown credited the two employees for the rescue.

"Mike and Kevin have been outstanding team members at Boston Duck Tours for many years," Brown said. "I'm thankful that the training they have received, along with very lucky timing, put them in a position to help save this father and child."

"I could not be prouder of their quick thinking and smart actions," she added.

Boston duck boat captains rescue toddler and father from Charles River

Captains of a Boston “duck boat” rescued a father and son from the Charles River after the toddler tumbled into the water followed by his father on Monday, officials said.

The Boston Duck Tours boat, which take tourists both on water and on land, was participating in quarterly safety drills when it retrieved the pair from the water. The boy was taken to a hospital as a precaution Monday morning, the Cambridge Fire Department said.

“This is crazy. This is happening while we’re doing training," Michael Rosario, one of the captains, recounted to reporters. “Now we’re doing real-life rescue.”

The boy, who’s under 2, got past safety railing and fell into the river behind the Royal Sonesta, a riverfront hotel in Cambridge, according to Massachusetts State Police. His father quickly jumped in after him.

Photos showed both of them in the water with the father clinging to a rock face with one arm while holding his son with the other.

Rosario and co-captain Kevin O’Neil tossed out a safety ring, maneuvered close to them and dropped a ladder. Once both were safely aboard, they motored to the dock in Cambridge where they were met by first responders.

“We were happy to be in the right place at the right time,” said Tom Vigna, director of marketing for Boston Duck Tours.

Duck boat rescues baby boy who fell into Charles River, dad who jumped in after him

A Boston Duck Tours boat rescued a baby boy who fell into the Charles River in Cambridge and his father who jumped into the water to save him on Monday morning, officials said.

Troopers responding to a report of a child under the age of 2 in the river near the rear of Royal Sonesta Hotel around 9:30 a.m. learned the boy had fallen into the water after squeezing through a railing, according to Massachusetts State Police.

The boy’s father subsequently jumped into the river and secured him. They were then taken aboard a passing Duck Boat in the area of 40 Land Boulevard and dropped off at a nearby dock.

Mike Rosario, one of two Duck Tour operators on the boat, is credited with rescuing the baby and his father. Rosario and Kevin O’Neill were on a training run when they spotted the two in the water.

“Like if a child decides to lean over and God forbid they fall in, we have to jump into action right away,” said Rosario, who is known to patrons as Big Mike. “So we train for this all the time.”

Because it was a training run, only the two were aboard the Olga Ironsides for the safety drill. And then, suddenly, it wasn’t a drill at all.

“I was doing my loop and when I turned back around Kevin noticed a group of people waving to us,” Rosario said. “And then he noticed a man in the water and that’s when we realized somebody fell in.”

Rosario said the Dad was clinging to both the retaining wall and the child.

“So there’s like little slots in the rocks,” said Rosario. “So Dad was holding on there while he was holding the child.”

Duck boat rescue protocol actually calls for the vessel to initially move away from the person in the water, so as not to hurt them. Then a life-preserver ring is tossed over to help keep the person afloat. Finally, the duck boat is maneuvered into place to effect the rescue.

O’Neill manned the back of the duck boat, as Rosario gently backed it into a position a safe distance away from the Dad and son. Once in place, O’Neill lowered the ladder.

“And then I just walked down a few steps into the water,” he said -- close enough to take the baby from his Dad’s arm and bring him aboard.

“I was thinking, just hold on to this kid and totally concentrate on just getting him up on the duck boat safe,” O’Neill said. “And I was also saying, you’re okay, you’re okay. I don’t have any kids of my own and I’m not very good with babies, but because of the adrenaline I wasn’t thinking about any of that.”

The boy and his father were evaluated by EMS on shore after being pulled from the water. The boy was then taken to a local hospital as a precaution.

“He just said thank you, thank you so much,” O’Neill said. “And he was effusively thankful. We just said, of course. We’re so glad that you guys are okay.”

Video from the scene showed an Orange Duck Boat near a dock, as well as a state police cruiser and ambulances parked along the shore.

“So I looked over with my camera and I was able to zoom in and see there was actually a child in the water, a baby,” Demasi said. “And the father jumped in right afterwards.”

Photos shared with Boston 25 News showed first responders lowering a life preserver ring down to the father and his child.

NEW IMAGES: A man and baby were rescued from the Charles River this morning by first responders and a @BostonDuckTours boat. These pictures were captured by photographer Dominic Demasi who was across the river at the time. @boston25 pic.twitter.com/2qbvpJRuvZ — Ryan Breslin (@ryanjbreslin) August 19, 2024

A witness who didn’t want to appear on camera told Boston 25 News that the baby was likely between 11 and 15 months of age.

Local photographer Dominic Demasi said he heard screaming followed by people rushing over.

“Initially I thought it was a dog. I took my camera, I looked closer, and there happened to be a baby in the water, actually. The father jumped right in. He was swimming with the baby for five or 10 minutes. They then called a Duck Boat over,” Demasi recalled. “Everything happened so quickly. Everyone seemed to be safe, but it was scary.”

Demasi added that it was fortunate the water wasn’t cold when the baby plunged into the river.

“They come out of the Charles right here and they do their tours. So, they just happened to be in the area at the right time I guess. Right place, right time,” Demasi said. “It definitely scared me. I could hear them screaming...It’s good it wasn’t a long time. It wasn’t cold out.”

Both the child and father are okay, according to a Cambridge Fire Department spokesperson. Just a bit shaken up.

As for Rosario and O’Neill, by afternoon they were back aboard the Olga Ironsides, a full contingent of passengers in back after a day they won’t soon forget.

“Both are valued employees, even before this rescue,” said Cindy Brown, Boston Duck Tours CEO. “Mike and Kevin have been outstanding team members at Boston Duck Tours for many years. I’m thankful that the training they have received, along with very lucky timing, put them in a position to help save this father and child. I could not be prouder of their quick thinking and smart actions.”

Duck Boat tour operator rescues baby, father who fell into river

Duck boats in Boston

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A baby fell into the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts, but luckily a Duck Boat tour operator was nearby.

State troopers said the child, who was under the age of 2, fell into the river after he squeezed through the railing, WFXT reported. The child’s father jumped in to rescue him.

But a passing Duck Boat — an amphibious watercraft popular with tourists in Boston — scooped the father and son up, dropping them off at a dock nearby.

The boat Olga Ironsides was on a training run so the only people on board were Mike Rosario and Kevin O’Neill.

“I was doing my loop and when I turned back around Kevin noticed a group of people waving to us,” Rosario told WFXT . “And then he noticed a man in the water and that’s when we realized somebody fell in.”

Rosario said the father was holding on to his son, while also holding onto a retaining wall. First responders had tried to lower a life ring down to them.

“So there’s like little slots in the rocks,” Rosario said. “So Dad was holding on there while he was holding the child.”

Rosario got the boat in a safe spot, while O’Neill was at the back of the boat and lowered the ladder.

“And then I just walked down a few steps into the water,” he said -- close enough to take the baby from his Dad’s arm and bring him aboard,” O’Neill said.

“I was thinking, just hold on to this kid and totally concentrate on just getting him up on the duck boat safe. And I was also saying, you’re okay, you’re okay. I don’t have any kids of my own and I’m not very good with babies, but because of the adrenaline I wasn’t thinking about any of that.”

First responders checked out the pair, and the little boy was taken to an area hospital as a precaution.

The CEO of the boat tour company said their training was at the right place and the right time.

“Both are valued employees, even before this rescue,” Cindy Brown, Boston Duck Tours CEO, told WFXT . “Mike and Kevin have been outstanding team members at Boston Duck Tours for many years. I’m thankful that the training they have received, along with very lucky timing, put them in a position to help save this father and child. I could not be prouder of their quick thinking and smart actions.”

CAMBRIDGE, Massachusetts ( WBZ ) — A Boston Duck Tour boat came to the rescue of a little boy and his father after a fall into the Charles River Monday morning.

Massachusetts State Police said the boy, who is under 2 years old, apparently squeezed through the railing and fell into the water behind the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge. The boy’s father jumped in after him.

Duck Boat first on scene after fall into river

Photographer Dominic DeMasi was across the river and heard the mother’s screams. “Extreme. Like she was upset. You could tell,” DeMasi said. “And then I saw the man jump in and I just knew that something was wrong, so I zoomed in on my camera.”

Police and firefighters were called, but it was a Duck Boat that arrived on scene first. The amphibious vehicle that’s famous for taking tourists to see Boston landmarks from land and water happened to be doing a routine rescue training drill nearby.

DeMasi’s photos show the orange Duck Boat heading toward the father and child who were clinging to a stone wall. Two workers on the Duck Boat say they have never seen anything like this in their combined 20-plus years on the job.

“Just hold on to this kid”

Duck Boat operator and captain Michael Rosario said “the adrenaline was kicking in.”

“This is crazy,” he said. “It was happening while we were doing training. Now we’re doing a real-life rescue.”

“I was thinking, just hold on to this kid,” narrator and captain Kevin O’Neill said. “Get them up onto the Duck safe.”

As Rosario got the Duck Boat into position, O’Neill got the life ring out and down to the father and son, pulling them to safety. Rosario said the child was crying and cold, so they wrapped him in a blanket.

“He just said, thank you, thank you so much and he was effusively thankful, and we said of course, we are so glad that you guys are OK,” O’Neill said.

“I have two daughters,” Rosario said. “I just thought about if it was my child and I was stuck in there, I would be so happy if somebody came to rescue us.”

The boy and his father are OK. As for Duck Boat rescuers Rosario and O’Neill, they went right back to work for a busy day of tours.

A duck boat that happened to be conducting water rescue training saved a man and his child from the Charles River on Monday morning in Cambridge.

The child, who was under 2, was able to squeeze through a railing near the back side of the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge and fell into the river, Massachusetts State Police said. The child's father then jumped in, grabbing the child in the water.

STAY IN THE KNOW

The pair was then picked up by a passing Boston Duck Tours boat. The company's CEO said the boat was conducting safety training exercises in the area, and boat's operators spoke to reporters about the irony of doing "man overboard" training when they were waved down in their vessel, Olga Ironsides.

"We instantly jumped into action," Capt. Michael Rosario said.

The situation remained under investigation.

Images shared with NBC10 Boston showed the pair in the water, clinging to the rocks that line the river, as the duck boat approached.

Dom DeMasi, who took the images, said he "heard somebody screaming, and I looked over across the river and there was a guy jumping into the water."

He thought at first a dog might have been the source of the splashing, but was astonished to see "this guy pick up a baby out of the water." '

Rosario and his colleague, duck boat narrator Kevin O'Neill, said they were happy to have conducted a rescue and that the father and son will live to tell the tale.
