FULL Guide to LEGOLAND Billund in Denmark! Hotels, Passes, Things To Do!

Categories Denmark , Europe

Visiting LEGOLAND in Billund, Denmark was a huge highlight of our summer and I highly recommend going, especially if you’re a family of LEGO lovers. And yes, you should make the effort to visit the Denmark park even if you live in the UK / overseas because it’s so worth it!

There are many LEGOLAND Theme Parks around the world – Windsor, UK, Dubai, California, but Billund in Denmark is the home of LEGO and that’s a huge reason to go to the Danish LEGOLAND ®  Billund  Resort .

In this Denmark travel blog, I’m going to give you all the information you need to plan a trip to Billund LEGOLAND including how long to visit, flight tips, where to stay in Billund, the LEGO Hotels in Billund, ticket information and things to do in Billund.

Planning a Trip to LEGOLAND Billund

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog LEGOLAND Billund

If you’re reading this post, you probably don’t live in Denmark and therefore you need to travel abroad to visit Denmark . And you may be thinking.. is LEGOLAND in Denmark worth it? So before we get into all the practical information, let’s touch on this,

Find What You're Looking For Easily Here:

Is it worth going to LEGOLAND Billund?

The town of Billund in Denmark is in fact the home of LEGO as a Danish carpenter first created the LEGO brick in 1930. So if you’re a LEGO lover, going here feels pretty special.

But it’s not just the feel, IT IS special . So much of the town outside of the LEGOLAND theme park is LEGO-related too which we loved!

Walking from LEGOLAND to LEGO House (which is a must-visit as well!) we passed the LEGO corporate offices which had been designed with LEGO-looking pieces and a huge LEGO man outside.

Accommodation-wise, there’s lots of LEGO-themed accommodation in Billund which range in price and room size and there are far more fun options than any other LEGOLAND location in the world.

Denmark is always rated highly as one of the happiest countries in the world and this is largely down to how well Denmark is looked after and therefore how happy its residents are and we could feel this in Billund.

We found Billund a total pleasure to walk around. It’s clean, tidy and organised and once inside the LEGOLAND theme park where things can often get chaotic, dirty and long, despite visiting on a Saturday in the summer, we found LEGOLAND Billund theme park to be well maintained , the queues were not too long, the staff were nice and the people around us were all polite which had a hugely positive effect on our experience, especially when comparing it to theme parks in the UK.

If you’re visiting Denmark as part of a longer Scandinavia itinerary … I highly recommend a stop in Billund to visit LEGOLAND!

How long do you need to spend at LEGOLAND Billund?

We landed at 15:30 and flew home the next at 21:00 and it was a really perfect amount of time.

I’m really glad we only stayed for 1 night in Billund , especially as accommodation costs were high. I would have loved it if we could have got a morning flight though so we had 2 full days as by the time we got out of the airport and to the hotel at 16:30, it was too late to enter LEGO House or the theme park.

Instead, we spent time in the hotel which was a lot of fun and then took a walk into town to get dinner and play outside LEGO House so it ended up being a beautiful evening still.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog LEGOLAND Billund, LEGO House steps from above with blue skies

1 day at LEGOLAND Billund is totally doable and if you really wanted to push it and the flights worked, you could do a day trip by getting an early morning flight to Billund and a late flight home. Of course, be prepared for a potential flight delay messing up your timing, especially if you fly with Ryanair as we did (although we did fly on time with them this time thankfully!).

Can you visit LEGOLAND and LEGO House in 1 day

LEGO House and LEGOLAND are 2 separate attractions a 20-25 minute walk / 5 minute bus ride apart . I’ll go more into LEGO House later in this post but if you / your kids love LEGO it’s a must-visit as well as the theme park.

We managed both in one day (just!). We were at the gates of LEGOLAND park at 9:30 am and were therefore one of the first in at 10:00. We left at 13:00 to go to LEGO House getting there at about 13:20. Left LEGO House at 15:30 and getting back to LEGOLAND at 16:00.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog LEGOLAND Billund, entry gates in the morning

TIP: You can leave and re-enter LEGOLAND Park within the same day but you must get a stamp on your hand when exiting the gates.

LEGOLAND’s closing time changes depending on the time of year . For us, it closed at 19:00 but all rides finished an hour early so we had 2 hours to do rides and spent 30 minutes after the rides finished walking around MINILAND before leaving at 18:30. It was a busy day but do-able with 3 kids aged 7, 10 and 16!

I wish we had 2 days in Billund though because my stepsons loved LEGO House!

We have so much LEGO at home and although they love theme parks and we all loved the LEGO-themed rides and areas at LEGOLAND, they just love building stuff and LEGO House is so amazingly creative , I wish we had been able to spend a whole day / 5-6 hours there just letting them play, and getting our money’s worth from the ticket.

In future, I’d love to fly us all back to Billund, either for the day or for a short 1 day, 1-night trip and just go to LEGO House !

How to get to Billund Denmark?

I love looking at flights on Skyscanner and when searching ‘Everywhere’ from Manchester, I’d often see good flights to Denmark Billund and be like.. but what’s in Billund??

Turns out, LEGOLAND is there and because there are not many other reasons to visit Billund, flights can be reasonably priced .

We paid £35.00 pp for our flights from Manchester, UK which we thought was such a bargain! Also, because we stayed for just 1 night, we only took backpacks and therefore didn’t pay any extra for luggage on the flight.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog LEGOLAND Billund, Billund Airport at Mainland

If fights don’t work for you to Billund, you could look at flights to Copenhagen , hire a car and do the 3-hour drive or go by public transport consisting of trains and buses taking around 4 hours.

How to get from Billund Airport to LEGOLAND RESORT?

Another one of the things we loved about Billund and this trip is just how close everything is .

Billund Airport is just a 10-minute car ride or a 30-minute walk away from the LEGOLAND Theme Park and Hotels. Billund has a regular bus schedule which stops at the airport and around the theme park,. hotels and town centre.

There’s even a free hourly shuttle bus around the town and airport (I believe this is only in July & August ) which we got from the airport.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog LEGOLAND Billund, free shuttle bus in Billund

Do you need to hire a car in Billund?

By default, my husband will hire a car when we go away. I had to tell him many times that ‘we won’t need one here’ because everything is so close together and thankfully, I was right.

Technically, we could have, but it wouldn’t have saved us that much time as we got on with the bus just fine and hopefully it saved us some money.

If you do plan to stay longer and visit more of the things to do around Billund, you will need to hire a car or work out public transport.

TIP: Billund is so small, you could arrive, not hire a car from the airport for the day you plan to spend at LEGOLAND then the next day, easily get the bus to the airport and pick up a hire car to explore the nearby areas. It will probably save you money on a day’s car hire and doesn’t take too long to pop to the airport and get the car the next day.

LEGO Accommodation in Billund

Billund is not short of accommodation and there is a variety depending on what you want, from hotel rooms, apartments and cabins.

The majority of the hotel accommodation is LEGO-themed , with some apartments on offer in the town which are privately owned and not LEGO-themed.

We stayed in the LEGOLAND CASTLE HOTEL which we loved! It opened in 2019 and is still really new and well-maintained.

I chose this hotel over HOTEL LEGOLAND and LEGO HOLIDAY VILLAGE because it had the biggest rooms. There were 5 of us with 1 child being a teenager so we needed our double bed plus 2 bunk beds whereas the other hotels offered just 1 bunk bed. I booked the Superior Dragons Knight Room.

Where to stay in Billund Denmark?

There are 3 main LEGO-themed accommodations:

  • LEGOLAND CASTLE HOTEL
  • HOTEL LEGOLAND
  • LEGO HOLIDAY VILLAGE

LEGOLAND CASTLE HOTEL – Offers 3 themes – Dragons Knight, Wizard and Princess. They also offer 2 sizes – standard and superior.

Check out rates and availability at LEGOLAND CASTLE HOTEL here!

HOTEL LEGOLAND – Offers a few themes – Adventure, Pirate, Treasure, LEGO Friends, LEGO Ninjago, LEGO Movie, and park view rooms. These also differ in size.

Check out rates and availability at HOTEL LEGOLAND here!

LEGO HOLIDAY VILLAGE – This village is made up of 3 different accommodation types which are all booked individually too – LEGOLAND NINJAGO Cabins , LEGOLAND Wilderness Barrels & Cabins , LEGOLAND Wild West Cabins & LEGOLAND Pirates´ Inn Motel .

If you are not bothered by a LEGO theme and are only visiting Billund quickly, Billund Airport Hotel is well located within the airport grounds. The public bus stops here after the main airport stop and then continues to run into the town and to LEGOLAND. Billund Airport Hotel is a reasonable price and looks really new!

What is the best LEGO hotel in Billund?

LEGOLAND CASTLE HOTEL is definitely the newest with the most facilities . It looks the coolest from the outside with so many features inside and out from talking LEGO statues, LEGO play areas and LEGO competitions all guests can enter.

LEGOLAND CASTLE HOTEL has 3 playgrounds, a fitness centre, a restaurant and a shop . Reception is filled with areas to play LEGO and we found the rooms and overall hotel really clean and well maintained . It’s also across the road from the LEGOLAND park so the closest you can get.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, corridor inside l LEGOLAND Castle Hotel

If you want a more cost-effective option , during my research for the best accommodation in Billund, I found the cabins at LEGO Holiday Village are the cheapest LEGO-themed accommodation options on offer. These are a bit further from the park entrance (but only by a few minutes) and look smaller inside but they offer a nice indoor-outdoor living option!

LEGOLAND Billund Tickets

LEGOLAND ®  Billund  Resort offers a range of tickets and passes. As a visitor from overseas, you’re likely to just need the 1-day pass or 2-day pass .

Do you need 2 days at LEGOLAND Billund theme park?

To be honest, I don’t think you need 2 days in the theme park . We initially looked at this option but our flights didn’t allow us to spend 2 days there and I’m actually glad because our 1-day ticket was enough!

If you have 2 days in Billund , you should spend one whole day at LEGOLAND theme park and the other day at LEGO House and some of the other things to do around Billund.

Buy your LEGOLAND Billund tickets here:

Is it worth getting fast-track tickets for LEGOLAND Billund?

LEGOLAND offer 3 different fast-track options called Reserve & Ride .

Of course, each day is going to be different but we went to LEGOLAND Billund on a Saturday in August which I presume is Peak Season and we didn’t need fast-track tickets.

We debated getting fast-track tickets but the cost of them is quite high and there were 5 of us so it was pricey.

I’m so glad we didn’t because we were one of the first groups into the park at 10:00 so we headed to the back of the park and had no queues for rides for the first hour.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, inside LEGOLAND park

We left the park and went to LEGO House at lunchtime, upon arriving back it was much busier with 15-25 minute queue waits but because we did a good chunk of rides in the morning, we didn’t mind.

If you are visiting LEGOLAND in the afternoon and will be very short on time, fast-track tickets will be worth it in high season.

Can you leave LEGOLAND Billund and return?

Yes! You can leave the park and reenter on the same day. You just need to get a stamp on your hand from a staff member at the gate before exiting.

LEGOLAND Billund Rides

The great thing about LEGOLAND Billund is the variety of rides on offer for all ages . My stepsons are 7, 10 and 16 so we spent our time on the bigger rides but we did walk through the DUPLO LAND which is great for younger children.

If you want to know more about what LEGOLAND Billund for toddlers is like, have a read of this post .

Some areas are LEGO themed like LEGO NINJAGO WORLD and LEGO MOVIE WORLD and perfect for LEGO lovers, however, the other areas like Polar Land, Adventure Land and Pirate Land are pretty generic so even if you aren’t into LEGO that much, or your kids aren’t, they will still enjoy the rides and the decoration.

What are the best rides at LEGOLAND Billund?

  • Polar Express
  • X-treme Racers
  • Ice Pilots School
  • Pirate Splash Battle
  • LEGO Ninjago Ride
  • Pirate Carousel
  • Fire Brigade
  • The Haunted House
  • Flying Eagle

There are no huge roller coasters . The biggest is the Polar Express which has a lot of turns, drops and is pretty fast but my youngest stepson at 7 years old just reached the height limit and went on it fine so it’s not too scary (although I realised at that age, they have no fear anyway!).

The next biggest roller coaster is X-treme Racers , this has a steep drop at the beginning and feels really unique because you’re in a small cart of just 4 people rather than a long train like roller coasters usually have!

Flying Eagle is the next biggest after that if you’re looking for the best roller coasters at LEGOLAND Billund!

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, Pirate Splash Battle inside LEGOLAND park

Talking of unique rides at LEGOLAND Billund , Ice Pilot’s School is really cool! You design your own ride before you get on by choosing a choice of turns and moves on a screen using a key card.

Aside from adrenaline rides, we really loved the competition of rides such as The Temple, Pirate Splash Battle and LEGO Ninjago Ride .

Make sure you also go to The Haunted House because the maze mirror in there is soo crazy and good!

How wet do the water rides at LEGOLAND Billund get you?

We went on nearly all of the water rides and we didn’t get AS wet as expected. Of course, it always depends on where you sit. When you sit at the front of the Canoe you are likely to get pretty wet.

Pirate Splash Battle can get pretty wet, it just depends if the other boats are full and how many people are trying to squirt water at you.

It rained when we entered the park so we were big tourists and bought Ponchos because I didn’t bring any waterproof jackets so we put these on for the water rides which helped but as it was a sunny day, we would have dried off okay.

Plus, they do have driers you can stand in!

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, Ellie in poncho on canoe water ride

TIP – The greatest tip for LEGOLAND I read was that the rides close an hour before the official park closing time . You still have the last hour to walk around and MINILAND is a great place to spend this time because it’s still open. If your priority is all the rides like it was for us. Do all of these first and then end at MINILAND, don’t waste time there earlier in the day.

Things to do in Billund

Aside from LEGOLAND, what is there to do in Billund Denmark?

Well, if you’re not going for LEGO, there isn’t a huge amount to visit but there are still quite a few attractions in Billund and attractions near Billund.

Below are many ideas or click here for my full list of things to do in Billund !

1. LEGOLAND Theme Park

2. lego house.

LEGO House is a creative and immersive LEGO experience with 25 million pieces of LEGO inside ! Aside from LEGOLAND, it is the top tourist attraction in Billund.

It is known as Home of the Brick due to LEGO originating in Billund and is great for adults and children who love LEGO.

You need to buy a separate ticket and it’s around the same price as the LEGOLAND theme park entry ticket so make sure you give yourself enough time here to get your money’s worth.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, Dinosaurs at LEGO House

You can enter LEGO House for free , but you can only access the ground floor which has 1 small area to play but nothing else.

You can also play outside the building at any time of the day . There are 2 sets of steps which we saw people having a picnic and playing on. There are also big pieces of LEGO you can climb on!

There are many different areas within the building with different LEGO pieces giving different creative ideas . There are also many areas for young children to play with DUPLO in a safe environment.

The staff are really great too I found, they are very interactive giving ideas and advice to people.

LEGO House has a cafe and restaurant on the ground as well as a shop (that we spent wayyyy too long in!). You can also exit and re-enter within the same day so you really can spend a full day here.

As I said, with LEGO-loving boys, I’d definitely consider a trip back to Billund just to visit LEGO House and spend the full day there!

3. Lalandia

Lalandia can be seen from LEGOLAND. It’s a Danish holiday centre with 3 different locations in Denmark.

In Billund, with accommodation onsite but also lots of activities like an Aquadome, paddle courts, crazy golf, climbing courses and restaurants.

If you’re looking for things to do in Billund with kids, visiting here will give you a few more activity options and is easy to walk to from LEGOLAND and the nearby accommodation.

4. Teddy Bear Art Museum

Located next to LEGO House is the Teddy Bear Art Museum, another one of the things to do in Billund.

It’s home to 1200 teddy bears dating back to 1906 and is a place of art as well as play.

It’s one of the cheaper things to do in Billund and children aged 0-11 enter for free.

5. Skulpturpark Billund

We came across Billund Skulpturpark whilst walking to dinner from LEGO Castle Hotel. It’s only a small park but has a few things for children to sit and play on .

What’s really cool though is it’s next to THE LEGO GROUP corporate offices. They have a giant LEGO man outside the office entrance and the building is made from LEGO-looking bricks!

They have a sign which says ‘play on the grass’. To us, this summed up what Billund is all about

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, outside the LEGO Group offices

6. WOW PARK Billund

Located on the outskirts of Billund is WOW PARK Billund . It’s an amusement park for the whole family where you can challenge yourself on everything from giant Tarzan swings , and high-hanging suspension bridges to wild slides and underground caves!

We didn’t go but here’s a great post from a family who have been!

The Guardian called it ‘Go Ape goes Viking!’

Get your ticket for WOW Park Billund here:

Things to do near Billund

For more things to do in Billund, many attractions near Billund are worth visiting and will enhance your trip, especially seeing and learning more about the history of Denmark.

These attractions are not in Billund, they are things to do near Billund, so you will need to hire a car or work out public transport to get to them:

  • The Living Museum Karensminde
  • Kongernes Jelling – Home of the Vikings
  • Givskud Zoo
  • Hiking in Syvårssøerne

Here are more attractions near Billund:

Where to eat in Billund

Finally, after all this activity, where can you eat in Billund?

LEGOLAND CASTLE HOTEL where we stayed has a restaurant onsite called the Knights Tavern . They offer a 2-hour buffet, all-you-can-eat window every day. I believe this concept is common in other LEGO-themed hotels here and in other countries.

The only thing is that it’s expensive . A buffet in the Knights Tavern is 449 DKK / £50.00 pp and from 199 DKK / £25.00 per child.

The Wandering Quinn Travel Blog how to visit LEGOLAND Billund, Knights Tavern Restaurant at LEGOHOUSE Castle Hotel

The best place to go for restaurants in Billund is the town centre where LEGO House is located. Here, there are a number of places to eat in Billund.

We went to Billund Pizza Steakhouse . They were really busy on a Saturday night for people eating in and ordering take-out. We found the food to be good so I could see why they were busy.

If you’re looking for halal food in Billund , Billund Pizza Steakhouse offers many halal meat options but check with the server first as not everything is halal.

I hope this guide to LEGOLAND Billund and how to visit LEGOLAND Billund has been helpful and you are now ready to book!

Saturday 22nd of June 2024

Great article, very useful for ideas of our family trip this mid-September. I wonder if I could get your advice? We arrive into Billund by coach from Copenhagen at lunchtime Sunday then fly home on Monday night. Considering either a 2 day Legoland pass or 1 day Legoland pass plus an afternoon Lego House visit on one of the days. As our bus arrives into Legoland at 12:55, the afternoon Lego House ticket is for 13:00 (so a bit tight!) Sounds like Lego House is a must so it's whether we do it on arrival or save it for the following afternoon then do the rides on arrival/the following morning...or any other suggestion you may have! We're booked to stay at Hotel Legoland. Thanks!

TheWanderingQuinn

Monday 24th of June 2024

Hello, so glad you're going soon! We had a similar situation where we arrived in the afternoon with one full day the next day but couldn't quite fit in anything in the afternoon as it was just too late for Lego House. Although doing both in 1 day is quite a lot, we did manage it fine. We did a few hours at the park, then went to Lego House around lunchtime and then went back to the park until it closed and then went for our flight, and in the end, we spent the afternoon on day 1 enjoying the hotel, especially as we had to check out the second day anyway and walking around the area a bit and it worked out perfectly.

You could do a 2 day park ticket so you can go on day 1 for a bit but equally, especially if you get the bus between the park and Lego house on day 2, you can fit a lot in on 1 day and then it saves you money with just a 1 day pass.. and you get to enjoy the hotel as I doubt the kids will want to leave the hotel that quickly once checked in as it is really cool in itself!

Wednesday 27th of March 2024

Loveee the post. I'm researching for a trip this summer so it's really helpful. Didnt realize youre a muslim too, so the halal shout out there is a surprise. Much appreciated!

Ah that's so great! We had such a great time. I actually enjoyed it the same, if not more than the kids lol and glad the halal recommendation helps! Hope you make it!

Top tips for a family trip to the original Legoland in Billund, Denmark

Top tips for a family trip to the original Legoland in Billund, Denmark

All you need to know when visiting the home of LEGO in Billund, Denmark

Billund in Denmark is the home of Lego.

It is where the very first Lego toy brick was made in 1932. And where the first Legoland Park opened on June 7, 1968, next to the original Lego factory.

Legoland Billund is smaller, flatter and easier to get around than Legoland Windsor. Plus it’s just a 90-minute flight from the UK so makes a great alternative for Lego fans.

If you are planning a visit to Legoland Billund , make sure you read our 14 top tips below first and then our review .

1. How to get to Legoland Billund in Denmark

Legoland Billund is across the road from Billund Airport. You can fly there from Manchester, Heathrow and Stansted Airports. Ryanair fly from Stansted and Sun-Air, a British Airways partner, goes from Heathrow and Manchester.

We flew direct from Manchester with Sun-Air (which works in partnership with BA) on a tiny plane. The flight took 90 minutes.

2. Where to stay

It is expensive but you can stay stay at the park – at Legoland Hotel or Legoland Castle Hotel, a stay which can include park tickets, parking and early park access.

There is also Legoland Holiday Village, 450 metres from the entrance to Legoland.

But we stayed over the road at Lalandia Billund – an amazing water park resort, so got the best of both worlds. We stayed in a fantastic two-bedroomed lodge.

Lalandia

3. Best time to go to Legoland Billund

The busiest days at Legoland Billund are Tuesdays and Wednesdays while Saturdays are the quietest.

If you want to go over the summer, go as late as you can as Danish children usually go back to school towards the end of August so it will be quieter.

We found queues manageable despite visiting during the Easter holidays – there are lots of rides and plenty of space.

4. How to avoid the queues

Most people enter the park and start going on rides as soon as they see them so head straight to the back to avoid the crowds.

The longest queues when we went were in the Ninjago area which did mean a wait for Lloyd’s Laser Maze and the Ninjago Ride.

The Ninjago Ride

The Ninjago Ride

If you have Ninjago fans you could head there as soon as the gates open. Alternatively, the most popular rides are often quieter in the last 30 minutes before the park closes, although you may miss out altogether if you leave it too late.

To really save time queuing, splash out on the Q-Bot Reserve and Ride system. Instead of waiting in a queue at each attraction, you spend the waiting time elsewhere in the park. An Express pass reduces your waiting time by 50 per cent and an Ultimate pass means almost no waits in queues on your chosen rides, which can be a game changer when you have young children.

Legoland Billund is divided into themed areas.

The Miniland area is at its heart with recreations of everything from old Amsterdam to Star Wars, made out of Lego, which everyone will enjoy.

This park uses 65 million of the little bricks to build its displays.

There is a Duplo Land, Imagination Zone, Pirate Land, Knights’ Kingdom, Polar Land and Legoredo Town.

Duplo Land at Lego Billund

Lego Ninjago World and Adventure Land are really popular.

Our favourite ride was the competitive Falck Fire Engine in Adventure Land. You work with your family to use a pump to move a fire engine and then spray out ‘fires’ while racing against other visitors on their fire engines.

Falck Fire Engine ride

Falck Fire Engine ride

The farthest end of the park is the quietest and we found a nice picnic spot by the penguin enclosure where we could watch them swimming while we ate.

6. Age appropriate

Unlike some theme parks, there is lots for little ones including Duplo Land for toddlers and Imagination Zone.

There are also enough rollercoasters to keep teenagers happy – so this suits all ages from two to 16.

A rollercoaster at Legoland Billund

There’s plenty for older children

Don’t forget to be aware of height and age restrictions, so children aren’t left disappointed on the day.

7. Food and drink

There are food and drink outfits but the options can be pricey. Plus they get very busy after 12.30pm so take your own food and drinks where possible, to enjoy in one of the picnic areas.

8. Language

This is obviously a Danish theme park but some of the 4D films are in English – check the times for these in advance.

9. Pushchairs

It’s a nice flat theme park and not overly huge but if little one’s legs get tired, there are pushchairs to hire.

10. Aquarium

If the weather is bad or you want a break from the rides then there is a good aquarium in the Imagination Zone called Atlantis by Sea Life.

Atlantis by Sea Life in Legoland Billund

Atlantis by Sea Life

It takes you on an expedition under the sea with a few bricks to find along the way. It doesn’t take very long but is a good spot to dry off or warm up and includes a tunnel under the water.

11. Special needs

The park is flat and all roads and paths are paved so wheelchairs users can go everywhere.

Those with a hidden disability such as anxiety, autism or ADHD can collect a ’show consideration’ wristband.

Disabled and ’show consideration’ access to rides is via the exits or sometimes through the Q-bot entrance.

12. Buying tickets

Buy online to save money and to save time queuing for tickets and download the free, official app to plan your trip.

13. Don’t miss the new Lego House

If you are after another Lego experience – try the big Lego House, which has opened in Billund and is within walking distance of Legoland.

This 12,000-square-metre house is filled with 25 million Lego bricks.

Here, children learn through play with Lego. The house also includes three restaurants and a Lego store.

Lego House in Billund

14. The history

You can go to other Legoland parks, but only one place is the home of Lego.

Almost every visitor stops for an iconic photo outside the main entrance sign. Save time getting in by doing this at the end of the day not the beginning, when the shot will be more clear of people.

This park is not huge but it is historic and has enough to keep you entertained for a full day or a couple of days.

Advance entry starts from around 300DKK – about £30 – per person. For tickets and information visit the Legoland Billund website.

Trips to Legoland Denmark

Nothing compares to visiting the birthplace of LEGO; the original LEGOLAND; the place where imaginations run wild. Our family trips to Legoland Denmark are filled with so many happy memories, and funny stories from the bumps along the way. So whether you’ve read a heap of Legoland Denmark reviews, or this is your first glimpse into this magical place, let’s dig in to everything you’ll need to know.

Table of Contents

Legoland Denmark Review

Located in one of the world’s happiest countries, it is no wonder LEGOLAND Denmark is one of the best places in the world to take your family. Opened in 1968 alongside the LEGO factory, LEGOLAND Denmark has seen over 50 million visitors come through their gates to revel in all things LEGO.

There’s something very special about  LEGOLAND Denmark  and I think it has a lot to do with the fact it is in the town where it all started, Billund. Surprisingly Billund is a small town in regional Denmark, 260km west of  Copenhagen . It is surrounded by beautiful farms and forests, and picturesque villages.

Ever since my boys were born, I’ve wanted to take them to visit LEGOLAND Denmark. I went there with my family when I was 11, and even though it has changed a lot over the years, it still holds a very special place in my heart.

Now it was my turn to be the parent as we set off with aunts, uncles, cousins, and Nonna in tow to discover LEGOLAND. There were 12 of us, with the kids varying in age from 6 to 20. We thought it might be a challenge to keep so many people happy for two days but we were wrong.

Legoland Denmark reviews

Everyone was happy to get to LEGOLAND but I think it was the two little boys, aged 6 and 8, who were literally jumping out of their skin to start exploring. They had been saving money and imagining this day arriving for around six months, so when we got to LEGOLAND, there was great excitement.

The sight of around 60 million LEGO bricks joined together to create some of the most awesome creations ever seen was incredible. Nearly everything was made of LEGO!

Denmark Legoland trip

A favourite for the boys and two of their cousins was getting their first driving licence at the SEAT Traffic School. Our kids proudly put a LEGO Australian flag on the front of their car to identify where they were from and set off around the large track. They got to go through the pretend car wash, fill up with fuel and had to learn to stop, give way and drive on the right side of the road (which is the wrong side for Aussie!).

I loved watching them at the Traffic School because this was my fondest memory of my trip to  Europe  when I was 11. You need to pay extra and book your kids into Traffic School as soon as you get to LEGOLAND (so you don’t miss out). It is for children aged 7 to 13 years.

Legoland Denmark reviews

Everyone loved Miniland, a miniature version of famous buildings, cities, and exciting places, built using more than 20 million LEGO bricks.

There are more than 50 exciting rides to try out which would take you days if you want to have a go at them all. You can defeat the Great Devourer on Ninjago the Ride, travel the Dragon roller coaster through the King’s Castle, and put out fires in the Falck Fire Brigade race. There are jungle racers, xtreme racers, pirate boats, duplo planes and LEGO trains to ride on. One thing is for sure, your kids won’t be is bored.

The boy’s favourite was definitely Ninjago World where they got to see life sized figures of all their favourite characters, plus go on Cole’s Rock Climb, Lloyd’s Lasermaze and the clear winner of the day, Ninjago the Ride.

Legoland holidays Denmark

There are a really good mixture of rides and activities at Legoland for all the different ages ranging from toddlers to adults. There are restrictions on many of the rides so make sure you check the age and height restrictions at each ride before you start queuing.

The weather when we were there (in Summer) was cold and it did shower on and off for the two days. It didn’t stop us from doing anything but did send us home a bit earlier on the first day, as we were cold. This is why it’s good to have tickets to more than one day as most of the attractions are out in the open.

LEGOLAND Denmark is only open between April and October so make sure you  check the website for opening dates and times .

If you’re not totally worn out from the sight of Lego, make time while you’re in Billund to also visit LEGO House . A relatively new addition to the things to do in Billund with kids, LEGO House is amazing. There are plenty of fun activties to keep the whole family happy and oh so much Lego to build creations with. Make sure you closely check out the Tree of Creativity, made with an incredible 6.3 million bricks!!

Being indoors, it’s open all year round.

Billund Accommodation LEGOLAND Denmark

There are so many accommodation options when visiting LEGOLAND Denmark. You can pitch a tent, stay in a teepee or cabin, or spend the night at a hotel, B&B or even a farm stay.

Billund is a lovely small town in central Denmark that is famous as the birthplace of  LEGO . It’s not the easiest thing to work out Billund accommodation options if you haven’t been there before, so we’ve put together our recommendations for the best apartments, cabins and hotels near LEGOLAND Denmark.

With only around 6,000 residents, Billund has a surprising array of accommodation. After a long day at LEGOLAND Denmark, you can choose to spend the night at a hotel, cabin, holiday house, hostel, or even a teepee. You can also pitch a tent, enjoy a bed and breakfast or even an apartment.

Our advice is to find a place to stay near LEGOLAND and not try to day trip from Aarhus, Odense or Copenhagen.

LEGOLAND Billund Accommodation Options

Lalandia holiday cottages billund.

Our top pick for a place to stay near LEGOLAND for families would be Lalandia Holiday Cottages. Here you get space to move, don’t have to share a room with the kids, can self-cater (which will save you money), plus there’s plenty of activities and free entry to the onsite waterpark (Scandinavia’s largest).

Even the smallest of the cottages (sleeps four) has fridge/freezer, coffee maker, electric kettle, ceramic hob, oven, microwave and dishwasher, 1 double bed, 1 cot, 2 single beds, shower cubicle and washing machine, high chair, and free parking for one car.

Lalandia Holiday Cottages Billund are within easy walking distance to LEGOLAND or you can catch the free shuttle bus. It’s also close to Billund airport if you’re flying in.

Hotel LEGOLAND Denmark

If you want the complete LEGO experience and you have money to spend, then Hotel LEGOLAND Denmark is the place to be. Turn the kids dreams into reality and spend the night in a themed room like the Ninjago Room, Knights, Adventure, and Pirate rooms.

This four-star hotel inside of LEGOLAND Billund is a treat for kids, with plenty of LEGO to entertain them in the playroom, a playground, TV room, and NINTENDO GameZone. While they’re kept busy, you can relax with a coffee or a drink at the bar.

If you’re looking for more space than your average room, try out the Junior Suite which has its own living room and one separate bedroom. Junior Suites sleep four.

Best for:  Families wanting the ultimate LEGO experience that are happy to bunk in together in the one room (with the exception of the Junior Suite) for the sake of some serious memory making.

Be aware:  Rooms sleep between four to six people depending on the theme you choose. Price includes accommodation, buffet breakfast, and tickets into LEGOLAND. Check to confirm details.

LEGOLAND Holiday Village

trips to legoland denmark from uk

If you want the LEGO experience but your budget won’t stretch to Hotel LEGOLAND, the LEGOLAND Holiday Village Billund is a good one to look at, and it’s just over the road from LEGOLAND.

We rented three Wild West cabins at LEGOLAND Holiday Village with their own teeny-tiny bathroom and teeny-tiny kitchenette to fit the 12 of us. The kids loved it with LEGO figures everywhere, plus ducks you can feed, play equipment, plus you can hire cool tandem and quad pedal bikes to zoom around the village.

You can choose to spend the night in the new LEGO® NINJAGO® cabins, Wild West cabins, Pirate rooms, Wilderness barrels, onsite teepees, or bring your tent or campervan to the camping ground.

There is an onsite supermarket, takeaway pizza (which was good), and a restaurant (nothing too exciting).

You won’t find any luxuries here but it can be good fun if you have LEGO mad kids and you know what to expect when you get there.

Our pick:  We would choose to stay in the new LEGO Ninjago Cabins, as they have a little more room to move in the living area and have a toilet and shower in the cabin.

Best for:  Smaller families with children aged 10 and under who want to be next door to LEGOLAND and have the LEGO experience.

Be aware:  Beds in the cabins are not designed for tall people, so anyone over about 6ft may not have the best nights sleep. The beds in the Wild West cabins have walls at top and bottom, so there’s no hanging your feet over the end of the bed. Also be aware you won’t be spreading out your luggage or yourselves. They really are cosy cabins.

Many of the cabins share a toilet and shower block (which makes it cheaper), so check your reservation carefully to make sure you’ve got what you want.

Also be aware you will need to bring your own bed linen and towels, or rent them when you get there. You have to then put them on and pull them off yourself.

The cabins and motel are all listed separately but are all situated in the same resort using the same facilities.

How long to stay in Billund?

We spent two days at LEGOLAND, which was just right for us, but there were still things we didn’t get to see there. The new addition of LEGO House is certainly worth a visit for LEGO-loving kids and will take up about half a day. Plus if you need a break from all that LEGO, have some fun at  Lalandia Water Park , Scandinavia’s largest waterpark. You could easily do three nights in Billund, which would give you two full days at LEGOLAND and time to see other things, but it all depends on how much time you have and what else you want to do in Denmark.

A Family Break at LEGOLAND Denmark

After my older boys (then aged nine and seven) turned into fully fledged ‘shapeheads’ (Douglas Coupland's term for LEGO obsessives), a short break at LEGOLAND seemed an ideal getaway idea for October half term. LEGOLAND parks – found in Windsor  and also  Germany , Denmark, California  and Florida  – are designed for kids aged 2–12, so though my youngest son (three and a half at the time) didn't yet share his brothers' passion, we knew there’d be plenty to entertain him too.

We’ve been to the LEGOLAND in the UK and were tempted to go further afield this time. The original LEGOLAND is set amidst the flatlands of Denmark’s Jutland region, in the curious town of Billund, which is where LEGO was invented and which is still given over almost entirely to the brand – it’s also home to the head office and main factory. You can fly to Billund from London Heathrow, London City or Manchester airports, or take the ferry to the Netherlands and drive onwards from there.

Hotel Legoland overlooking the themepark has various themed (and standard) bedrooms sleeping up to six, plus two family-friendly restaurants serving surprisingly good food. Better-value, however, is Lalandia Holiday Village across the road from the LEGOLAND entrance, with funkily furnished self-catering lodges and a vast leisure complex with a superb aquadome that puts all waterparks we’ve been to in the UK to shame, plus Monky Tonky Land playland and plenty of other attractions including ten-pin bowling and adventure golf.

LEGOLAND itself was a big hit with all the family, with a highlight for the older boys being the Star Wars area within Miniland, with fantastically detailed reconstructions of some of the key scenes from the movie. They also loved the Toyota Driving School, which allowed them to get their own licences to take home with them. The best ride, perhaps, for us all as a family was the gentle log flume, taking you past a series of vignettes with more amazingly well-rendered LEGO animals before final splash-down.

We also enjoyed a day in Esbjerg, where the Fiskeri og Sofartsmuseet has thought-provoking displays on the local fishing industry and seafaring in general. It’s saved from being dry by having an aquarium, a 'sealarium' with daily feeding displays, a colony of minks, the best playground I’ve seen at any museum, and even an old WWII bunker to explore. Its family-friendly café looks out onto the famous landmark Mennesket ved Havet or ‘Men of the Sea’, a nine-metre-tall monument depicting four men looking out at the North Sea.

We walked off our seafood lunch on Sædding Beach in front of the monument, dipped our toes into the icy North Sea and then warmed up over hot chocolates in a café. The shapeheads, clutching the obligatory bags of new sets from the LEGOLAND on-site shop in their sweaty mitts, were already talking of their return to the themepark.

12 best LEGOLAND Billund tips to make the most of your visit

Are you planning a trip to LEGOLAND Billund? Then read on for our ultimate LEGOLAND Billund tips.

If, like us, you have a LEGO-obsessed member of your family, a trip to LEGOLAND Billund feels almost like a pilgrimage. Located in LEGO’s spiritual home in Billund, the theme-park is the ideal combination of thrill-seeking and brick building and is an absolute must-do if you’re visiting Billund with kids .

LEGO traces its origins back to the 1930’s when it was invented in the town of Billund in Denmark and, since then, LEGO and Billund have become synonymous with one another. As soon as you arrive in the town (usually at the airport which itself was built to meet the growing transportation demands of the company), you’re transported to a world where LEGO is king.

For our own LEGO-obsessed son, it was a dream come true and this was felt no more so than at LEGOLAND Billund theme-park.

With such a special place to explore, it’s essential you get organised to make the most out of your visit. In this guide, we’ll give you tips on where to stay, when to go, what to see, what to eat, and much more besides.

Looking for more things to do in Billund as a family? Then check out our guide to visiting Billund with kids .

1. Stay in Legoland Hotel to maximise your time

A trip to LEGOLAND is a fun (but long) day, so it’s handy if you’re able to stay near the park to focus your energy on the fun stuff. And what could be closer than Hotel LEGOLAND , the 4-star hotel located right next to the park, with its own entrance.

Click here to check prices and availability of Hotel LEGOLAND Billund

Whilst not the cheapest option, there is something magical about sleeping so close to the park and you can choose from several differently themed rooms including Pirate and Adventurer. There are several restaurants on-site (breakfast is usually included in the room rate) with a few different options for dinner to suit most diets. You’ll also find a shop and lots of LEGO-themed play areas to keep the kids occupied if they still have energy after the park.

trips to legoland denmark from uk

If you’ve ever stayed in other LEGOLAND Hotels such as LEGOLAND Hotel Malaysia , or Windsor, or Dubai, you’ll know what to expect as they are built to an almost identical specification.

The best part is the location though, allowing you to skip straight into the park at the start of the day. Plus, as the day draws to a close, it’s good to know you don’t have a long drive ahead of you.

2. Check for park closures

Before your book, make sure you check the park website to see if the park is open when you plan to visit. During the winter months in particular, the park is usually closed on weekdays, but it can sometimes be closed on certain days during the peak season for maintenance or special occasions.

Last thing you want to do is pay for flights and accommodation to visit, and then find out the LEGOLAND Billund is shut!

Legoland Billund

3. Visit outside of weekends and local school holidays

As with most theme-parks around the world, it pays to avoid weekends and school holidays if you have some flexibility in your itinerary. LEGOLAND Billund is a popular attraction, particularly with visitors from Northern Europe and it can get very busy in peak periods.

However, if you do visit during the summer school holidays, LEGOLAND Billund mentions on their website that: ‘ Saturday is changeover day in the summer houses and therefore we typically have fewer guests in LEGOLAND on weekends during our high season. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are typically our busiest days .’

4. Measure up

Height restrictions can be a show-stopper at theme parks, with that pesky vertical ruler spoiling many a day and creating uncontrollable tears. Try to plan ahead using this helpful page on the website which lets you specify your child’s height and see which rides are off-limits.

Doing this in advance is really useful to help manage expectations during your visit.

trips to legoland denmark from uk

The good news at LEGOLAND Billund is that most of the rides are 120cm plus, similar to a lot of the kid-friendly rides at Alton Towers , so once they reach this magic height, they’ll be able to ride almost everything apart from Apocalypseburg Sky Battle which is brilliant, but restricted to 130cm plus.

5. Plan in advance

In addition to checking your child’s height in advance, there are other steps you can take to make the day a success. The best tip is to download the Legoland Billund app which lets you watch waiting times live (a great innovation), plan your route and access an interactive map.

It’s free to download and also lets you book tickets in advance.

6. Book activities ahead

There are a few activities, notably Traffic School and the Creative Workshop which need to be booked on the day of your visit if you’d like to attend. They can’t be booked before the day of your visit, so if there’s one activity you definitely want to do, make sure you head over there early on and book yourselves in.

On quieter days, you might be fine leaving it later in the day, but it always pays to book as early as you can, if possible.

You’ll be given a timeslot later in the day, try to arrive a few minutes early to register and get set up.

7. Eat lunch early

Lunch isn’t just about food at the theme-park, it’s also a good time for you and the kids to take a break and muster up some strength for the afternoon. Unfortunately, everyone else has the same idea so the food courts and restaurants can get very busy from 12:30pm until 2:30pm.

Try to eat either before or after these times, LEGOLAND Billund recommend visiting the food outlets between 11.30am-12.30pm, as they’re usually less busy then.

However, the restaurants at LEGOLAND Billund are far from cheap, so it’s worthwhile packing a picnic to save the pennies. There are lots of picnic benches dotted around the park.

Also remember to bring some small snacks with you, ideally things like biscuits and fruit which will provide a welcome energy boost and save you spending too much money at the park shops and vending machines.

8. Book tickets in advance

It definitely pays to book in advance if you can, you typically save a massive 30% on the walk-up price and you won’t need to queue at the ticket office.

You can book via the app or online at the official website . If you’re planning to visit more than twice in a year, consider getting the annual pass as it’ll soon pay for itself.

9. Allow a full day, perhaps longer

During our visit, we had the luxury of a two-day pass which we’d definitely recommend if your wallet and itinerary can manage it. A two-day pass is only DKK99 extra than one day, so it can work out quite cost-effective.

It means you can take your time on day one, safe in the knowledge that you’ll be back the next day to tick off anything you’ve missed, or repeat your favourites from the first day.

In any case, you’ll almost certainly want to spend a whole day at the park, so factor that into your planning for the rest of your stay in Billund.

This is very different to other LEGOLANDs across the world where we’ve felt that a day was enough. LEGOLAND Billund is actually the biggest, which is understandable as this is the home of LEGO!

Although do make sure you allow enough time to visit the other family attractions in Billund .

trips to legoland denmark from uk

10. Forget about buying queue-jumper add-ons

Based on our experience during our visit, it’s not worthwhile buying any queue-jumper style passes at LEGOLAND Billund. The queues were fairly short, mostly less than fifteen minutes and sometimes we just walked straight to the front.

The passes they offer are called Reserve and Ride which allow you to reserve a specific time for a ride and then be alerted by the app when your time arrives.

There’s three different versions depending on how much queue time you want to avoid, with the ‘no-waiting time’ option working out at DKK799 per person (approx £90) so it’s incredibly expensive and would have been a waste of money during our visit.

11. Shop til you drop

You didn’t think you’d get through the day without going through a LEGO shop, did you?

Theme parks love to catch you on the way out with merchandise, and LEGOLAND Billund is no different. Maybe we’re biased as we love LEGO but it was actually quite a pleasant experience at the end of the day, with a fun LEGO store placed at the exit.

Try and save some time and money for it if you can, it’s a good way to end the day and they have some items which you won’t find elsewhere. Just don’t forget about your baggage allowance.

trips to legoland denmark from uk

12. Check out Miniland

Sometimes overlooked, Miniland is definitely worth a visit, not least because it gives you all a chance to recuperate and take a break from the constant rides. There’s always a quiet corner to retreat to and the LEGO structures are incredibly detailed.

We love finding a place or building we’ve visited in real life and, with the twenty million bricks on display, you’re sure to find somewhere you recognise.

Final thoughts on LEGOLAND Billund

LEGO is a big part of our family so LEGOLAND Billund has been a place we’d wanted to visit for years, and it didn’t disappoint.

The rides were much better suited for our kids (aged 7 and 8 at the time) than at LEGOLAND Windsor, and we felt it had a slightly more magical feel than LEGOLAND Malaysia , perhaps because we knew we were in the home of LEGO.

A stay in Hotel LEGOLAND is a fantastic bonus if you can afford it, giving you easy access to the park at the start and end of the day. The creators of the park have really captured the joy and wonder of LEGO, making it a great place to visit for the whole family.

Legoland Denmark and Lego House Billund: What To Expect

April 30, 2023 by Jenny Eaves

Disclosure: Our visit to Legoland Denmark and Lego House was part of a gifted press visit.

Table of Contents

Where Is Billund?

Legoland Denmark and Lego House are located in Billund, central Denmark. Billund is a small town in Southern Denmark. You can get flights direct to Billund airport from Edinburgh , Manchester, Birmingham and London. It’s also possible to take the train from Copenhagen to nearby Vejle and then the bus from there to Billund.

For us it was easiest to simply fly direct from Edinburgh to Billund with Ryanair. Flights were cheap and for a long weekend break we could fit everything in our under seat hand luggage bags! Avoiding baggage fees meant we could spend more on our trip!

The Home Of Lego

Billund, Denmark is the home of Lego. It’s where Lego was first created! A Danish Carpenter fell on hard times and started supplementing his income building wooden toys. These were very popular and in the 1940’s he decided to start making blocks out of plastic. This was the beginning of Lego as we know it. The Lego company design became world famous and it definitely put Billund on the map. In the late 1960’s Legoland Billund opened and visitors flocked from around the world. Lego fans of all ages will absolutely love visiting Billund, it’s an amazing place to explore.

So you will definitely find plenty of Lego wherever you look in Billund. It’s what makes the town famous and employs many local people! You’ll find the Lego square in a central location where the house is located in the heart of Billund, it’s not hard to miss!

Inside the Lego House there is also a great Lego store, where you can buy the latest Lego models, exclusive sets to Lego House and make your own minifigures or Lego pictures. You don’t need to have tickets to Lego House to enter the store. It’s also fun to visit the ground floor where the shop is located to look at some of the Lego installations in this area too.

Lego House – Home of the Brick

The Lego House is a must-see when you go to Billund. Although Legoland Billund is the main attraction for most people, it’s Lego House where you get to really experience the Lego world. Everyone starts walking up the main staircase at the Masterpiece Gallery, once you reach the top of the giant lego tree of creativity made completely from Lego bricks! This is also where you can find the giant Lego house dinosaurs and adult fan’s of Lego masterpieces at the top of the building.

The Lego House is split up into 4 different experience zones, highlighted by the colours blue, green, red and yellow. Each zone has different Lego experiences and challenges to complete.

Lego Play Zones – The Ultimate Lego Experience

In the blue zone you can try out coding with the Lego bee robots, become a miniature city architect by building your own metropolis of individual buildings or build the fastest race car! In the green zone you can explore the various Lego landscapes, spot little stories (such as the ski jumper landing onto the volcano island!) and make your own stop motion video. The yellow zone is where you can build school’s of Lego fish to add to a virtual aquarium, build a flower for the meadow and build a Lego character out of actual bricks that comes to life with emotion and music! Finally the red zone is where you can find the Lego waterfall and a huge number of bricks where you can make your own creations to your hearts content (the perfect Lego play area!). So you can build your own worlds for hours!

Children beside Lego waterfall at Lego House

When you arrive at Lego House you are also given a digital wristband with QR code. This can be scanned at various points around Lego House to take home memories of your visit. It’s cool to see the different things you built or movies you made! All can be downloaded and saved to your device with 29 days of your visit.

Our favourite parts were the Lego landscapes in the green zone and making your own dancing characters in the yellow zone. We stayed at both areas for a VERY long time! Then it was definitely the aquarium where we all spent plenty of time creating all sorts of fish.

Mini Chef at Lego house

Lego House also has Mini Chef, an interactive lunch experience with a very Lego theme. You must book in advance (it sells out quickly!) and as it can be a little slow due to how busy it is I recommend doing this on the day you arrive or the day you leave (you can enter from the public area rather than the paid area). That way you don’t have to worry about losing time in Lego House itself.

When you are shown to your table you are all given a menu with each item corresponding a particular colour and shape of brick. You need to choose which items you would like using the bricks and slide it into the machine on the table. This reads the bricks and orders your food. The reason it’s in bricks is because the minifigures who make your meal can only read in bricks!

When it’s time to pick up your food you will need to head over to Roberto and Roberta, the Mini Chef robots who hand you a giant Lego brick shaped bento box after it’s travelled along the conveyor belt . Inside are all your food choices! It’s quite impressive, although definitely on the expensive side. As a one-off for Lego lovers it was worth it in our opinion.

Don’t Forget!

Downstairs there is also a ‘black’ coloured zone where the History collection of Lego is located. This is great for kids to see how Lego started and adults to say ‘I used to have that!’. Suffice to say we all enjoyed checking out old Lego sets and how Lego was first created.

Don’t forget to visit the outside of the Lego House to explore the play areas too. There are some play areas that are only accessible from Lego House. However the vast majority are public squares accessed from the outside steps and anyone can visit for free. The rooftop playground is definitely worth coming back to on another day, you may not have time when you’re exploring inside!

Legoland Denmark

Legoland Theme Park Denmark , Billund was opened in 1968, allowing people to experience Lego as part of a theme park. There are now a variety of Legoland Parks around the world, but Legoland Billund Resort was the original Legoland Park. Legoland Windsor has quite a few similarities, but each Legoland Park has different rides!

Legoland Billund resort is divided up into different themed areas, including Duplo Land, Pirate Land, Polar Land, Adventure Land, Knight’s Kingdom and the Imagination zone.

You will find lots of rides, from the famous roller coaster, The Flying Eagle, to a haunted house, water rides and even a cool ‘create your own roller coaster simulator’ ride at ice Pilots school.

There are special events for different times of years, including Halloween and Christmas. So it’s a great time to visit if you like seasonal themes (and cold weather!).

There are plenty of rides and Lego characters to meet, however the biggest attraction for our 11 year old was Mini Land.

Mini Land is the heart of Legoland. It’s here in Miniland area you can find dozens of different mini landscapes and even a Lego City or two. Complete with train stations, docks, workshops, buildings of all kinds and replicas of famous landmarks around the world.

Favourites definitely had to be the trains that zip around the different landscapes. The Kennedy Space centre shuttle launch and canal locks that actually work! They have also included a few interactive features where you can move different items or squirt water at ships!

We did spend hours here over 2 days at Legoland. Of course we went to rides and things too, but always came back to Miniland. I’d imagine it would be similar for others who love building Lego empires themselves?! The scale Lego brick models were very impressive, so much detail and thought had gone into them all!

Child at Miniland Legoland Denmark

The Rides at Legoland Denmark

Most of the rides at Legoland are suitable for younger children. So although you will see plenty of teenagers on the rollercoasters, there are also many 3-4 year olds going on them too! Height varies between 80-130cm for the rides, with only the Apocalypseburg Sky battle at 130cm. If you have a child of around 120cm height, they will be able to do most rides.

This doesn’t make them less scary though, the Polar X-plorer for example has a fantastic surprise that made EVERYONE scream! So I’d definitely recommend the park for people of all ages. You will find something for everyone.

Our 11 year old loves theme park rides and rollercoasters, whereas the 9 year old prefers more gentle rides. So we did have to split up a few times. Fortunately the queues during the Easter holidays when we visited were only 15 minutes long at the most. So we never had to wait around too much. The youngest especially loved Emmet’s Flying Adventure, the mini boats and the Ninjago laser maze. The eldest decided his favourite was the Polar-xplorer followed closely by the Lego canoe.

Viking splash rapid ride at Legoland Denmark

Atlantis Aquarium

Another area that is great to visit to chill and enjoy is the aquarium. Here you can enjoy watching sea life swim past Lego sculptures, including treasure chests, skeletons and divers!

We love seeing the rays and sharks, as well as all the smaller colourful fish swimming past. A good spot if you need a rest from rides or to shelter from the heat or rain!

Atlantis by Sealife at Legoland Denmark

Other Attractions at Legoland Denmark

In the same area at Atlantis are creative workshops that you can join in, Lego Studios 4D Cinema, build at Legoland Gallery and the Great Lego Reef and get an amazing view in the Lego Top tower. There is also the possibility to pan for gold at the Lego Goldmine to create your own gold medallion. This incurs an extra cost. We didn’t manage to fit all these things in, even with 2 days and minimal queues, there is just so much to see and do! I definitely recommend downloading the app to plan out what attractions you can’t miss. Then you can work out the best way to see those first.

In the summer there are also shows to watch, although we didn’t see these as we visited in April.

So what did we think of Legoland Denmark and Lego House? Well they were both amazing and well worth a long weekend in Billund. We had 1 full day at Lego House and 2 full days at Legoland Billund. If we had more time I would have a 2nd day at Lego House too, there was so much to do that it felt a little rushed at the end.

There are various places to stay in Billund, from self catering lodges or a campsite, to the hotel Legoland, which has one section looking like a medieval castle.  You can check out Legoland Hotel visit out in this post .

As Billund is only an hour and a half flight from Edinburgh we had all afternoon on our first and all morning on our last day in Billund too. We used the first afternoon to explore the public terraces of Lego House. Unfortunately it started raining heavily, but I recommend doing this separate to the day you are actually inside Lego House. On our last morning/early afternoon (our flight wasn’t until 6pm) we visited Lalandia water park next door to Legoland. So you can easily fit in a lot with 3-4 nights. It is definitely a place to keep the whole family entertained!

Visiting Legoland from Copenhagen

Chances are, you know about Lego. This huge Danish brand has spawned smash-hit movies and toy-inspired theme parks around the world, from Dubai to Japan.

Legoland, Denmark

But the  original Legoland lies just outside the Danish town of Billund. It was opened back in 1968 as an outdoor exhibition to showcase the company’s products on a large scale.

Today the theme park is officially called the Legoland Billund Resort, and has grown to become Denmark’s most visited attraction – outside of Copenhagen, anyway.

Why go? When is the best time to visit? Buying tickets Plan your visit Food and drink options Buying souvenirs Getting there Can you do it in a day? Where to stay near Legoland Nearby attractions

Legoland is impressive for kids of all ages, while for adults a visit to the ‘birthplace’ of the brand can be a bit of a pilgrimage.

Lego village, Legoland, Denmark

You’ll find plenty of entertainment around the park, whether you’ve come to admire the cities and famous buildings built from Lego bricks, or to brave the wildest rides the park has to offer.

The park is split into ten different themed zones based on actual Lego sets. So don’t be surprised to encounter everything from pirates to Indians, knights to ninjas on your way round.

And there are also more than 50 fifty rides and attractions, including the Flying Eagle rollercoaster and a variety of shows and displays that take place throughout the day.

It’s a whole world of entertainment and creativity, served up alongside plenty of restaurants and well-stocked Lego shops (of course). You can easily spend a whole day – or even two – at the park!

Usually, the park is open from the end of March to the end of December, though it’s not open every day in September and October, and often only open from Friday to Sunday in November and December.

The park’s open days vary from year to year, so make sure you check the website first.

When is the best time to visit?

As one of Denmark’s most visited attractions, Legoland can get busy. Weekends and school holidays, of course, are popular so if you want to avoid the crowds try and visit on a week-day out of season.

Perhaps surprisingly during the peak summer holidays, Saturdays and Sundays tend to be quieter as Saturday is the changeover day for summer rental accommodation.

During the summer holidays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays are often the busiest days of the week.

Danish schools go back towards the end of August so the park is less busy after then.

Waiting times for the most popular rides can be long, but you can download the Legoland app to check live waiting times at the various rides. Food outlets and restaurants are less busy between 11.30am and 12.30pm, so eat early if you can.

Buying tickets

There are two main tickets available that include entrance and all the rides: a one-day ticket , and a two-day ticket , which admits you to the park for any two days within six days – so you can have a rest day or two between visits.

You can easily spend two days in Legoland.

You can also buy a variety of seasonal passes , which allow access throughout the year: the Fun season pass excludes the peak summer holidays and halloween; the Awesome Pass allows entry all year: and the Extreme Pass includes entrance all year, plus special events, parking and Christmas opening.

These passes will only be worth buying if you’re planning lots of trips to Legoland or if you live nearby. There’s also a Combi ticket that include a visit to Legoland and the Lego House (see below) to be used within 6 days of each other.

Adult ticket prices apply from aged 3–99, so there are no child or senior discounts. Under 3s go free. There are discounts available for groups of 20 people or more.

We suggest buying tickets online in advance to save time queuing at the ticket office.

Is the Copenhagen Card worth buying?

Read this guide to see how much you could save during your trip!

Plan your visit

First thing to do is to check out the times of any show and events that you particularly want to see, and plan your day around these.

It’s also a good idea to arrive early and head for the most popular rides first before the queues start to build up. And check the waiting times on the Legoland app.

A sample one-day itinerary

If you’re just buying a day ticket , you’ll need to plan your day to make the most of your time. The average length of time people spend in Legoland is 6–8 hours, so you’ll won’t be able to do everything.

  • Ride the Polar X-plorer
  • Brave the X-treme Racers rollercoaster
  • Take a trip in the Flying Eagle
  • Early lunch to avoid the queues
  • Explore the world in miniature at Mini Land
  • Watch the Castle Show
  • Ride the LEGO Canoe
  • Visit the live sharks in the Atlantis zone

A sample two-day itinerary

You may well find that one day just isn’t enough to do everything there is to do at Legoland. If you’ve got a two-day ticket , you can do all the above but will also have time for the rides and shows below too.

  • Try Unikitty’s Disco Drop
  • Buckle up for Emmet’s Flying adventure interactive ride
  • Take a trip on the Pirate Boats
  • Climb Cole’s rock
  • Take a Ninjago ride
  • Tackle Lloyds Laser Maze
  • Watch the Battle of the Brick with real horses
  • Build your own Lego creations at Brick Street

Food and drink options

There are plenty of food and drink outlets in the park, though they can get busy at lunchtimes.

Food outlets include burgers, pizza, pasta, a grill house, a family buffet restaurant and a barbecue saloon, as well as a couple of coffee shops.

A cheaper alternative is to bring your own food and drink, and eat it at one park’s picnic areas.

Buying souvenirs

There are several on-site shops selling Lego bricks by the weight, Lego figurines, and a variety of rare Lego box sets and kits.

You can also buy Lego clothing and schoolbags, plus exclusive products that can only be bought at the park, such as knights’ swords, princess gowns and  pirate clothing.

Getting there

Legoland is next to Billund Airport in the small town of Billund in central Jutland. It’s about 265km west of Copenhagen and about 95km southwest of Aarhus.

Billund is home to the Lego company, Legoland Billund Resort (home to an awesome themed Lego hotel ) and Denmark’s second largest airport.

How to visit Legoland from Copenhagen

In fact, Billund Airport was built in 1964 by the Lego company, who needed to make it easier for investors to visit.

There are no direct flights from Copenhagen to Billund, though you can fly directly to Billund from a variety of other destinations including Stansted, Manchester and Edinburgh with Ryanair .

British Airways also flies there from Heathrow, London City Airport, Manchester and Humberside airport.

From the airport terminal in Billund, it is just a three-minute taxi ride to the entrance of Legoland, while several buses also make the eight-minute journey including the #43, the #944x, the #143 and the #144.

Another option is to walk (around 20 minutes) or cycle (about six minutes).

From central Copenhagen, the easiest way to reach Legoland is to jump on the train (2 hours, 10 minutes) to the city of Vejle in Jutland. Check the Omio site for fares and train times.

Lego Venice, Legoland

From Vejle, buses #43 and #143 run approximately every 30 minutes from Vejle Trafikcenter to Legoland – a 35–55-minute journey.

A cheaper, if slower, route is to catch the Flixbus from Copenhagen to Vejle, then change onto bus #43 or #143 to Billund (see above).

The bus ride from Copenhagen to Vejle takes approximately three hours.

Alternatively, you can rent a car in Copenhagen and drive across Zealand and Funen to Jutland.

Legoland is quite easy to get to from Copenhagen

The journey from Copenhagen to Legoland by car takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes, but note that you have to pay a toll to cross the Great Belt Bridge (270 DKK one way for a normal size car).

Legoland’s GPS address is Nordmarksvej 9, 7190 Billund.

Bear in mind that parking at Legoland costs an extra 60 DKK a day: parking tickets can be bought in advance online , in the Legoland shop, on the app, or you can pay by card at the car park ticket machines.

Can you do it in a day?

Travelling from Copenhagen to Legoland and back in one day is possible if you leave very early, but you’ll be on a very tight schedule if you want to make the most of the park.

water ride, Legoland, Denmark

Especially if you’re travelling with children, you’re better off spending the night at one of the hotels in Billund , either inside Legoland or elsewhere in the town.

So where is a good place to stay near Legoland?

Legoland has a wide range of official accommodation both in and outside the park. Inside the park itself, the four-star Hotel Legoland has rooms themed with pirates and ninjas and everything in between.

There’s also the pricey, but fun, castle-themed Legoland Castle Hotel . Just outside the park itself, a short stroll from the main entrance, it offers children the chance to meet knights, princesses and wizards in magical surroundings.

Slightly further afield, the Legoland Holiday Village has a pirate-themed motel , ninja and Wild West cabins, tipi-style tents and an area where you can set up your own caravan.

As well as Legoland’s own accommodation, there is a good selection of hotels in Billund itself .

Nearby attractions

And if you’re spending some time in the area, there are a few other attractions that are worth visiting.

If you haven’t had enough Lego, you can visit the nearby Lego House , filled with 25 million Lego bricks that kids can play with, giant Lego dinosaurs, waterfalls, trees, play areas and a museum.

And the building has even been designed to look like it’s made of Lego!

Kids will also love the Wow Park Billund , and outdoor adventure park where they can slide down the highest free-fall slide in Scandinavia. There are also rope swings, hanging bridges, ziplines, a maze and tree-top walkways to explore.

An altogether calmer day-out is the Givskud Zoo and safari park , just 20-minutes from Billund.

You can drive through a safari park where giraffe, zebras and antelope roam, then enter the lion enclosure before parking up and seeing other animals such as macaques, lemurs, gorillas and giant otters.

Legoland castle hotel billund, denmark – our review.

Visiting the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel in Billund, Denmark

Our trips to Denmark are some of our favourite. It’s a part of the world that we love and is so family friendly. So we jumped at the opportunity to take a visit to the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel Billund, Denmark. We visited for a weekend in Jutland to explore a little bit more of the area, take in the LEGO House , LEGOLAND Billund park itself and of course the Castle Hotel. It was wonderful to fly in direct to the Billund airport and start relaxing and having fun.

About the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel Billund, Denmark

The LEGOLAND Castle Hotel is a fairly new offering for the LEGOLAND park in Denmark. It’s a fantastic looking hotel, it’s so impressive as you approach it with a really large, imposing castle feel.

There are characters throughout the grounds including a dragon and a knight on horseback all of which have fantastic sound effects.

There are two buildings, a Wizard Castle and a Knight’s Castle.

The latter is where all of the main facilities are, including the restaurant, and that is where we stayed.

The Knight’s room at the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel, Billund – Sleeps

In total there are 142 rooms at the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel. These consist of rooms in the princess’s royal chambers, the dragon knight’s living room or the wizard’s magical observatory.

We stayed in the Knight’s living room which was an absolutely fantastic space. So airy and roomy for our family of five which is really unusual in hotels like this.

Part of the bedroom at the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel in Billund, Denmark

We had a main bedroom area which was wonderfully themed with dragons on the walls, LEGO figures and a great castle theme. I loved how the carpet was made to look like wooden floorboards and there was even a trap door.

The bed was really comfortable with a big red LEGO dragon smiling down on us from the plinth above.

It was slightly odd to wake up to find yourself face to face with a larger than life LEGO knight smiling down at you, but was really good fun.

Bedroom at the LEGOLAND Castle Hotel in Billund, Denmark

There were two chairs in the bedroom and a large chaise longue which looked like it would convert to another bed if you needed it to. It was great for relaxing on during the day.

We had a television, loads of sockets and plenty of space in the main bedroom area to relax between trips out to the main sights.

Down the small hallway was the children’s area which consisted of four bunk beds, perfect for larger families.

Children's bedroom

The children had their own television here and also a tub of LEGO to play with to their heart’s content which was a nice touch.

The bathroom had a great shower, sadly no bath but was a really good size nonetheless.

Bathroom

We thought the space in the room was fantastic, especially for a family like ours with three children who often just aren’t catered for, it’s normally just two child families so this was great to see.

Eating at the Castle Hotel at LEGOLAND in Denmark:

We ate breakfast each day in the main restaurant. There were two sittings each morning, either 7.45 – 8.30 or 9 – 10.

It was a fairly busy breakfast service with a number of queues to get food.

It did all move fairly quickly though and we were able to get coffee, juices, rolls and pastries.

There was a hot buffet of eggs and beans, sausages and bacon and you could pick up cheeses and fruit. It was a good selection and definitely set us up well for the day.

Dinner

We also ate dinner in the restaurant on one of the evenings which I was a little sceptical of as it was an all you can eat buffet but actually the food was great.

There were platters of tapas style starters that were brought to each table along with a basket of bread.

Then you could help yourself to a big selection of hot and cold food including salads, burgers (as well as a great veggie burger), freshly made and cooked pizzas and lots of other dishes such as chicken and fish.

We thought it was a great standard, typical of Denmark really and we ate so well.

Watch out though, large drinks really are very large.

There is a small play area in the restaurant which is really nice for the children to go off and enjoy the boxes of LEGO while we sat with a drink and relaxed.

The Best Bits

If you have kids who love LEGO then this hotel is for you.

It is such a fun hotel and really well themed throughout. There’s LEGO everywhere from the rooms to a big play area in reception where the children can play every time you head there.

Hallways have fun LEGO lanterns outside and the staircase with it’s LEGO chandeliers complete with LEGO rats is just brilliant.

Outside there is a great castle playground which is perfect for letting children burn off any energy they have left over from trips out to the main parks or further afield.

Worth Bearing in Mind:

This is a great, family friendly hotel and no sneaky hidden extras.

The hotel is brilliant at offering child free places and also early access to the LEGOLAND park which is well worth taking advantage of.

The Castle Hotel at LEGOLAND – Child Friendly?

This hotel couldn’t be any more child friendly if it tried. So much thought has gone in to it and it’s playful and fun and a kid’s dream.

All the little touches around the building and rooms, from little things to spot in the wall pictures to competitions in the lobby for designing the LEGO structure of the day, make this a big hit with children of all ages.

There is LEGO everywhere and it’s a really immersive experience with characters turning up at breakfast and dinner and a really great castle theme wherever you go.

This is such a great choice for where to stay near LEGOLAND in Billund, making it easy to get in to the park and pop back when little legs get weary. We all really hope to return soon.

Firstly those rooms are amazing! I love how they have done some simple but effective things like putting in a few different coloured tiles in the shower to make it look like lego. That’s genius. It looks fantastically child friendly too. My son is now 22 but used to be obsessed with Lego. in fact he still has a huge collection. I think he’d love a stay here lol

OMG, how gorgeous is the castle hotel and all legos has me wanting to book for me and my nephew. He would definitely love to be somewhere like this and the food design is just so cute.

Legoland Billund: What to Know Before You Go

Fact: If all the Lego minifigures in the world got together there’d be over 4 billion of them and they’d make up the world’s largest population.

Invented in the small Danish town of Billund in 1932, the plastic yellow people have come a long way from the humble workshop of a local carpenter. To this day, Billund is still the global headquarters of the toy company, the Lego factory as well as Legoland, where kids of all ages can get to grips with 9 themed Lego ‘lands’, 4 roller-coasters, 2 water rides and over 40 other attractions built from some 60 million bricks.   Set in a country that consistently tops lists of ‘world’s happiest nations’, it’s fair to say Legoland in Billund is up there as one of the best places on earth to take kids. Check out our tips and feedback from a family who recently visited:

A Family Trip to Legoland Billund

A Family Trip to Legoland Billund

The Severens family recently travelled to Billund with their two children aged four and seven. We caught up with them to find out more about their trip, here’s their verdict:

legoland collage

“Legoland Billund is the perfect choice for families like us who are not big fans of crowds or commercialism. The Duplo imaginative playground was one amazing discovery after another for our 4-year old who had fun playing shopkeeper one minute and a fire-fighter the next.  But what I loved most about Legoland is that there was so much to do for younger children.

The Imagination Zone, Miniland and Duplo Land are perfect for babies and children up to four years of age. While kids between 4 and 8 will enjoy the attractions of the Legoredo town, Pirate Land and Knight’s Kingdom, Polar Land is suited to slightly older children.

As soon as you enter the park, you’ll notice Miniland all around your feet with its miniature buildings, trains and boats, all made of Lego. Duplo Land, the next zone, is just perfect for toddlers, with its cute Duplo playground and tiny tricycles. These zones will keep young kids busy all morning. Our 4-year old and 7-year old rode the Duplo merry go round again and again. And again. And after that, they made a beeline for the Duplo train. A bit further into the park, the zones appeal mostly to children 4 years and up.

We just loved the Pirate Splash Battle, pirate boats and Lego canoe. Knight’s Kingdom has more kid-friendly roller-coasters and there’s the wonderful Viking River splash. The ride our kids enjoyed most was The Temple Treasure Hunt.  We also took part in the Falck Fire Brigade challenge and competed against other families to be the fastest and best fire brigade.

We skipped Polar Land, since its activities were only accessible for taller children. We stayed 2 nights at a hotel in nearby Grindsted, but if you have younger children who are in the habit of taking day-time naps,  there is plenty of other accommodation on site: Lalandia offers holiday homes, there’s a Legoland hotel too. We loved Legoland and Denmark and will definitely come back for a longer stay.”

Six Essential Legoland Tips

Legoland essential tips

  •  Families who book tickets online in advance can take advantage of discounts and avoid long queues at the entrance during busy times.
  •  If you’re planning a trip to Legoland over the summer months, the end of August is a quieter time to visit as Danish children are back at school and queues are much shorter.
  • Book a two-day ticket if you can, you’ll be less pressured to see everything in one day  (and it will be easier to keep everyone happy).
  • Restaurants and cafés are usually less busy between 11.30 – 12.30.  Take an early lunch and beat the crowds. Alternatively, bring a packed lunch, the event area next to Polar Land is the perfect place to take a break.
  • If you arrive early in the morning, start your tour at the back of the park and save seeing Mini Boats, Lego Safari, Legotop Caterpillar and Ghost – The Haunted House until later in the day.
  • To avoid tears and disappointment, check the age and height restrictions for each attraction on the Safe & Fun signs before you commit to queuing.

How to Get to Legoland Billund

Legoland is located just 3km from Billund airport. Renting a car or taking a taxi? You’ll reach the park in just 5 minutes. Between June and August, there is a free shuttle bus from Billund airport to and from Legoland. If travelling by rail from other parts of Denmark including Copenhagen and Arhus, the closest station is Vejle. Outside the station, there are buses marked Legoland to take day-trippers to and from the park. Luggage can be stored in lockers at the entrance to Legoland.
