Is Moscow Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report

Moscow, Russia

On Feb. 24, 2022, Russia invaded its neighbor country Ukraine, starting a war between these two countries.

This act of invasion caused many Ukrainians to flee their country and seek shelter in places like Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, etc…

At this time, we recommend no travel to Russia or Ukraine, or any neighboring countries for your own safety.

Russia : Safety by City

  • Nizhny Novgorod
  • Novosibirsk
  • Saint Petersburg
  • Yekaterinburg

Moscow, the capital of Russia, is a political, scientific, historical, architectural and business center of this huge country.

It’s one of the most visited places in Russia, and for good reason.

The best-known parts of Russia are concentrated precisely in the urban areas and cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg.

Moscow’s history attracts the most tourists, as they are fascinated by it is a surreal and sometimes brutal but nevertheless thrilling and jaw-dropping national story.

In this city, visited by 17 million tourists annually, the history, told in its numerous museums, some of which are the world’s greatest, interacts with modernity.

For example, in the Garden of Fallen Monuments (Fallen Monument Park), you can see entire clusters of modern art contrasting with the very non-conceptual Communist monuments.

  • Warnings & Dangers in Moscow

OVERALL RISK: MEDIUM

Generally speaking, Moscow today is safe as much as other cities in Europe, despite its problematic history with criminal activity in the 90s. However, if you’re planning on traveling to Moscow, keep in mind that you should always keep your guard up and remain aware of your surroundings, just in case.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: LOW

Generally speaking, transportation in Moscow is safe, but you should bear in mind that kidnappings have been known to happen, mostly in unlicensed taxis, so be careful when hailing one on the streets. Keep in mind that the most dangerous areas where small crime tends to occur are the underground walkways, called “perekhods”. Only use official services like Yandex Taxi, Uber or Gett taxi.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: HIGH

Pickpocketing is very common in Moscow, and surprisingly it is mostly performed by groups of children. Pay attention to your belongings, don’t leave them in plain sight and be especially careful in crowded places like stations or near tourist attractions.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: LOW

Moscow isn’t particularly susceptible to natural disasters. Some blizzards and snowstorms are possible during winter which can affect the traffic and delay your flights. During winter, be prepared to face the below-freezing temperatures.

MUGGING RISK: MEDIUM

The situation improved drastically when it comes to kidnappings and muggings. Generally, never accept free drinks or food when you’re in a club or a bar. Drink spiking and then attacking and robbing the victim have been reported on numerous occasions.

TERRORISM RISK: HIGH

After the recent terrorist attack in the subway in St. Petersburg the probability of this situation happening again in Moscow is very high.

SCAMS RISK: HIGH

There are many scams in Moscow, usually performed by children trying to distract you and then steal some money from you. Never talk to strange kids on the street. Also, you should avoid playing street gambling games.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

Women are generally safe in Moscow, though you should avoid finding yourself alone in clubs or bars, and of course, apply all normal precaution measures like avoiding remote and poorly lit streets and areas.

  • So... How Safe Is Moscow Really?

Moscow experienced a rise when it came to crime rates during the 1990s.

Violent crime, as well as petty crime and scams,  had increased, but the biggest part of the violence was within the criminal groups themselves, and it didn’t affect foreigners that much.

However, it decreased since the 90s, so right now, for tourists, Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, it’s even less so.

The crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.

Also, you can count on the officials to be uncorrupted – don’t ever try to bribe them: you will be charged with bribery.

Bear in mind that if you are a member of the LGBT community, there is no reason to avoid Moscow altogether but you should refrain from any public displays of affection.

As of June 2013, “homosexual propaganda to minors” is prohibited, which means that any discussion of gay rights or homosexuality issues in the presence of minors is punishable by law.

While you walk around Moscow, you might encounter police officials that may demand to see your papers to check if you have been registered within 7 business days of your arrival into Moscow.

You shouldn’t have any problems with this, because if you stay in a hotel then you are automatically registered and will be handed a confirmation paper.

  • How Does Moscow Compare?
  • Useful Information

Most countries do need a visa to enter Russia, and if you’re a U.S. citizen you must possess both a valid U.S. passport and a bona fide visa issued by a Russian Embassy or Consulate. None of the nationals that do need a visa can acquire one upon arrival, so make sure you apply for your visa in advance. If you are not sure about your visa status, visit www.doyouneedvisa.com which will let you know whether or not you need visa based on your nationality and the country you want to visit.

The Russian ruble is the official currency in Moscow. ATMs are widespread throughout the country and credit cards are accepted everywhere.

Moscow has a highly continental influenced climate characterized by warm to hot and dry summers and extremely cold, freezing winters with temperatures as low as -30°C – sometimes even lower, with heavy snowfall.

Sheremetyevo International Airport is the Russian busiest international airport. It is located in Molzhaninovsky District, Northern Administrative Okrug, in Moscow, about 29 km northwest of central Moscow.

Travel Insurance

Just like anywhere else, we advise getting travel insurance when traveling to Moscow, because it would cover not only medical problems but also theft and loss of valuables.

9 Reviews on Moscow

That's just not true.

The person who wrote the text obviously have never been in Moscow and in Russia at all. This is ridiculous. Even about pickpocketing, the risk at most is medium, mugging is zero in historical places but is pretty high in sleeping quarters

Your rating is only two stars for safety though? So I am confused. Are you rating the article to be in poor taste?

I went to Moscow in 2021. I enjoyed the trip. I felt there were “unsafe areas” so I avoided them. So long as you know where you are going and don’t insult the locals, you should be fine.

51% safe?! Is this out of date?

Moscow and Russia in general are MUCH SAFER than Paris or London, yet those latter are more than 15 points ahead?!

Hell, it’s even admitted in the above text: “Moscow isn’t more dangerous than any other European city, IT’S EVEN LESS SO.” Yeah, you bet! And then: “the crime rate in Moscow is fairly lower than one in New York, London or Paris, so you should feel safe here.” So why the low rating? I don’t get it.

Also, the latest terrorist attack in Moscow happened in 2010… so how can you honestly say that the risk is still “high”? Especially for the fact Russia is very much on the edge when it comes to fighting terrorism domestically and over the world.

Sure, it might not be ideal everywhere in Moscow, but it’s WAY SAFER than in Paris, especially at night. You just can’t go out in Paris after the evening anymore, in most areas (I got assaulted for no reason at Châtelet-les-Halles and taking the RER train at dark is becoming more and more risky)… while in Moscow, chances are that you’ll see girls in miniskirts walking home while quietly singing. Or maybe you’ll stumble upon some gorgeous lady asking you for a lighter and then giving you her number for a coffee the next day. So very dangerous!

I sense a serious bias, here. Is it because of that LGBT thing? Could you pick a more extreme case? Yeah, you can totally be gay in Russia, just be so in private. There even are transsexuals, but this is a traditional and respectable country, so you should respect their choice of not publicizing various sexual lifestyles.

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are safe

Moscow and Saint Petersburg are very safe in my opinion! I’ve been to both cities visiting family! There are so many people out on the streets and on public transportation- I felt very safe! You need to change your ratings!!

Any update on Covid-19 to visit Moscow

I visited 118 country and Moscow one of the safest city I have been, st Petersburg as well, I read this article hoping to find any update on covid-19 restrictions upon arrival, so if anyone can update I’m planning to visit Moscow again but I need to know if quarentain is required or mandatory, anyone can share, cheers.

In Russia nobody cares, masks off. I dont know if fiew thousands of infected per day are high for you though. I was never arrested for not wearing mask, but you have to have it on you. Sometimes cops ask to put mask, you just do that and everything ok, some shops can refuse to do service if you dont have mask. I assume they pressured by boss, so just put on mask, they can give you gloves and dont cause any problems.

Written by someone who never visited Russia

A veer biased review. Moscow or St. Petersburg for being such brilliant truly cosmopolitan cities are extremely safe. Pickpocketing in Russia?! By children?! Who wrote this? Clearly by someone who has never been to the great country of Russia.

Have never been there. But wish me well

Bias review, Moscow is much safer than that!

This review is so bias and just wrong! First of all apart from being a political, scientific and etc center, it is an absolutely beautiful city and a very culturally rich city. For tourists there’s a huge range of delicious food, amazing shopping, a lot of cultural activities, and all sorts of entertainment. I’ve travelled there in December 2019, and most of the time I spent walking around and exploring by myself, be it during day time or night, nothing happened to me once. I mostly used subways and sometimes taxi, both safe. Just have a common sense when it comes to safety and you’ll be fine. You need to travel there at least once in a lifetime, it’s a completely different experience and it’s a beautiful one, NOT a communistic terrorist epicenter as some describe it to be.

May 2023: Camie is AWESOME! I have a trip planned for South America later this summer that had many stops between countries needed. As I was trying to plan for it I became overwhelmed with all the details and quickly realized I needed more support. I looked up local travel agents and found Camie with Palouse Travel. She was in constant communication with me for about a week and went above and beyond to make sure I got the flights to the locations I needed and that the times worked within our schedule as well. I'm super satisfied with the flights we have, and the prices were pretty close to what I was expecting! I will update this review when we get back from our trip - but so far I highly recommend Camie at Palouse Travel for any travel needs. December 2023 Update: Camie was so incredibly helpful during my summer trip to South America! Everything went smoothly up until one of my return flights got canceled by the airline (was the airlines fault) and they were going to leave us with options that didn't work causing us to miss connections home . My travel partner and I were able to find a flight that would work for us even though the airport couldn't. I will spare you the long story, but the short version is that Camie helped us to get booked on this flight and we made it to our gate in minutes after a nice sprint through a Brazilian airport! Camie saved the day and it was so comforting to know we could contact her when our travels didn't go as planned. I will be booking all my major travels with her from now on!!

Update to previous review: Camie is a LIFE SAVER! 2 friends and 1 were traveling through South America this summer and had 14 flights through 3 countries. I printed off the itinerary Camie had booked and sent to us (I would highly recommend those traveling overseas to have a hard copy of their itinerary and confirmation codes). Unfortunately during one of our return segments the airline canceled a flight and caused us also to miss a connecting flight. We were able to make it to our first destination, but HAD to get to our final destination that night. Camie was able to book us a on a new flight just half an hour before said flight left (and it was the only one left leaving to our destination on the day we needed) (we did have pay for these as it was a brand new flight with a different airline -- customer service in SA is not always the best!). By the grace of God we made it through security and to our gate 5 minutes before departure in Brazil and we were able to make it to our final 2 flights as previously planned. Palouse Travel has been a great support so far and I am definitely planning on booking with them again in the future!

When my elderly mother was struggling with her travel arrangements, I knew I needed a travel professional, so I called Palouse Travel, my local travel agency here on the Palouse. Everytime a difficulty arose, Camie, the owner, told me not to worry, and that she would take care of everything... AND SHE DID! Her 30 years of experience as a travel expert really shone through on every detail of booking Mom's flight... right down to getting a wheelchair for Mom waiting at the airport. Camie at Palouse Travel treated my family like her family, and went the extra mile at every turn. I am truly overwhelmed at the level of personalized service I received, and would give a five star recommendation to any of my friends and family who need to travel to go to Palouse Travel. Just call Camie, as I know her expertise and caring for her clients will make for an unforgettable travel experience!!! Thanks so much, Camie! Margo W. Deary, Idaho

A Gentleman in Moscow on Paramount+ review: Ewan McGregor is exceptional in this captivating adaptation

M illions of people have read Amor Towles’s globally successful 2016 novel, A Gentleman in Moscow , and so debate has raged about who should play his impressively moustachioed protagonist, Count Rostov.

Some fancied Richard E Grant for the role. Benedict Cumberbatch and even Kenneth Branagh were also raised, but rest easy, fans: Paramount+’s eventual pick, Ewan McGregor, is exceptional.

This tender yet captivating eight-episode story follows the life of Count Alexander Ilych Rostov (McGregor), who has been placed under house arrest in the opulent Metropol hotel in Moscow during the Russian Revolution.

Rostov is of aristocratic stock, but is spared a death sentence by the Bolsheviks: some years ago, you see, he also happened to write a poem (well, it was attributed to him) which became a call to arms amongst the revolutionary generation. As a sort of next-best compromise to death, Rostov is marched from a Bolshevik tribunal into the hotel where he will spend the next 30 years of his life.

Despite the constraints of his locked down circumstances (the parallels with our own lockdown are obvious), the erstwhile Count is a beta-type, who builds a big life in his small, enclosed world.

He forges familial relationships with hotel staff and guests as the Metropol evolves into a miniature city opposite the Kremlin, housing long-lost friends, the politically opposed, the romantically involved, and although Rostov is prohibited from leaving (if he does, he’ll be shot on sight) he gives the audience a lesson in the power of quiet rebellion. “They can take away your house or your rooms, they can’t take away who you are,” he tells his young friend, Nina (Alexa Goodall), a fellow hotel ‘guest’, also living this isolated life.

Yes, the narrative and McGregor’s playing could do with more bite at times, the early episodes drift somewhat and a little nastiness would’ve gone a long way in injecting some required pace to proceedings, but McGregor’s Rostov had me deeply invested in his survival.

It's become virtually impossible for a period drama to be staged without it looking like it’s been partially lifted from Wes Anderson ’s creative department, but A Gentleman in Moscow escapes that by a whisker. Of course there are echoes of the Grand Budapest Hotel, but the set design and costuming have a depth and elegance which comes across as authentic.

The Metropol is a Narnian labyrinth of rooms, representing the lies and subterfuge that swill around the hotel between the guests, the politicians, apparatchiks and staff. There is so much deceit that eventually the truth ceases to exist and the Metropol becomes a fantasy land; as hotel business goes on as usual inside, beyond the building’s heavy revolving front door, a bloody uprising consumes the streets, that as the audience we rarely see.

Those revolving doors spin like a wheel of fortune for Rostov, bringing in new guests and life altering moments – some brutal, some carrying opportunity and some with love. Rostov declares that “the heart must always be a priority,” and the love on display here is influenced by the changing times in which he and his friends find themselves.

To that end, McGregor plays opposite his real-life wife Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Rostov’s love interest Anna Urbanova, a starlet with whom his fate becomes intertwined. I can't say the chemistry is remarkable, but it's a stellar interpretation of a slightly awkward, unlikely and unique love story.

There is also depth and subtlety as we witness Rostov move from a young man to an ageing father figure. Will he simply sink further into a state of acceptance, and see out the end of his days in the attic of the Metropol – or will he eventually stage a brave escape? If we are looking for a clue then it might be found in one of the script’s best lines: “If one does not master one’s circumstances,” says Rostov, “one is mastered by them.”

On Paramount+ from March 29

Ukraine war latest: Second Russian bridge 'destroyed' in strike - as UK refutes Zelenskyy criticism

Ukraine has attacked a second strategic bridge in Russia's Kursk region, while the UK has said its support for Kyiv is "unwavering" after President Zelenskyy claimed it had "slowed down". Listen to a Daily podcast special on how Ukraine crossed Vladimir Putin's "red line" as you scroll.

Ukraine has put Vladimir Putin "into a position he never dreamt in his worst nightmares", former foreign secretary Malcolm Rifkind has told Sky News.

Asked whether the invasion into the Russian territory of Kursk had been a gamechanger in the two-year war between Russia and Ukraine, Mr Rifkind said: "It's not by itself something that is going to defeat Russia.

"But it puts Putin into a position he never dreamt in his worst nightmares that he would be in because the Ukrainians have shown the complete uselessness of the Russian forces."

Mr Rifkind, who was foreign secretary under former prime minister John Major, went on: "Putin has always prided himself that the thing he does is provide security to Russia..

"Well this war has been a disaster for him, the change to NATO has been Sweden and Finland joining, which they had never done for almost 70 years, and now he finds parts of Russia occupied by the Ukrainians."

By Deborah Haynes , security and defence editor, near Russian border

The military pickup truck accelerates as it bursts out of a treeline and across an open field towards a Ukrainian mortar position about half a mile from the Russian border.

A soldier sitting in the back with a Sky News team says the extra speed is needed because of the threat from Russian drones.

Once more under the cover of woodland, the vehicle slows slightly as it bumps along a dirt track before pulling into a clearing, still shaded by overhanging branches - a natural shield from any watching eyes or bombs in the sky.

A mortar team, led by a commander called Junior Lieutenant Dmytro, emerges from a makeshift shelter, dug into the earth.

They say their mission on the Ukrainian side of the border in Sumy region has transformed since Ukraine invaded Russia almost two weeks ago.

You can read the full eyewitness account from Haynes here...

George and Amal Clooney's non-profit foundation has effectively been banned by Moscow and joined tens of foreign groups which have been designated as "undesirable".

The Clooney Foundation for Justice, a US non-profit group, was accused of "carrying out work on a Hollywood scale aimed at discrediting Russia," the prosecutor general's office said on Telegram.

It provided no evidence to back up the claims.

"It actively supports false patriots who have left the country," the office added.

Russia started classifying organisations as "undesirable" in 2015 and in addition to NGOs, the list of banned organisations includes media outlets, political, cultural and religious groups that Moscow claims are threat to the country's security.

Ukraine's shock invasion of the Russian territory of Kursk has been "turning the tables on Vladimir Putin",  our security and defence editor  Deborah Haynes says.

In his nightly address yesterday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave a clear indication as to the goals of the two week-old  invasion for the first time, saying he wanted to create a buffer zone for his country.

Speaking from Sumy, which neighbours Kursk, Haynes notes how it is the very same reason used by Mr Putin when his forces reinvaded the northeastern region of Kharkiv in May this year.

Haynes also says Mr Zelenskyy really values the Kursk offensive - the largest invasion of Russia since the Second World War - as he has "thrown a lot of the limited supplies of Western weapons into the fight".

For context : This weekend, Volodymyr Zelenskyy said his troops had strengthened positions in Russia's Kursk region, nearly two weeks into their attack, and called for bold decisions by Kyiv's allies to allow long-range strikes.

Ukraine said it had seized more than 80 settlements over 1,150 square kilometres since 6 August.

He said that the operation in the Kursk region was going according to plan and Ukrainian troops continued to advance and strengthen their positions.

"The long-range capability for our forces is the answer to all most important, most strategic questions of this war," he said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Ukraine, the Indian foreign ministry has said.

It is his first trip to war-torn Ukraine since Russia launched its land, air and sea invasion of the country in February 2022.

In July he met Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

What has India said about the war?

India has refrained from directly blaming Russia for the war, while urging neighbours to resolve the conflict through diplomacy.

New Delhi is an old friend of Russia but it is also seeking to strengthen its ties with the West.

We brought you reports yesterday that the Ukrainian air force had attacked a second bridge in Russia's Kursk region.

Here is what we know...

The strategic bridge over the Seym River in Russia's Kursk region was blown up to limit the supply capacity of a Russian group opposing the Ukrainian advance, Ukraine's commander Mykola Oleshchuk said.

He posted a video showing a growing cloud from an explosion on a bridge and one of its sections destroyed.

In a message on Telegram he also wrote: "Kursk direction. Minus one more bridge! Ukrainian air force aviation continues to deprive the enemy of logistical capabilities with precision airstrikes, which significantly affects the course of hostilities."

The bridge is the second attacked by Ukraine since Friday.

Military analysts have said there were three bridges in the area through which Russia supplies its forces and that two of them have been either destroyed or seriously damaged.

Ukraine's air defence units have repelled an overnight air attack by Russia, including on Kyiv, destroying all 11 drones that Moscow launched, Ukraine's air force has said this morning.

The drones were destroyed over the southern Mykolaiv region,  Cherkasy, Dnipro and Vinnytsia, in the centre of the country, and Kyiv.

Northeastern Kharkiv, Sumy and Donetsk, in the east, were also targeted.

There have not been any immediate reports of any damage due to the attack or falling drone debris.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the war in Ukraine.

Before we begin our regular updates and analysis, we've put together an overview of the biggest developments over the last week.

Kursk offensive

Ukraine's invasion into the Russian region of Kursk is ongoing, with the Ukrainian air force attacking two bridges in an effort to hamper Russian supply lines and reinforcements.

Footage showed explosions in two locations on the Seym river, at Zvannoe and Glushkovo.

Ukraine's offensive has generated frontline-wide pressures on Russian forces, the Institute for the Study of War said.

Vladimir Putin is almost certain to attempt to retake the Russian territory, which will require more manpower and equipment from elsewhere in the theatre, according to the US-based thinktank.

Long-term, Mr Putin will be forced to make a decision about committing resources to Russia's long international border with Ukraine, imposing "constraints" on theatre-wide planning that "Russia previously did not face".

One hurdle for Ukraine is permission to use Western weapons. The US has been hesitant, even holding up a UK request to permit British Storm Shadow missiles to be fired in Russia, The Times reported.

But British Challenger 2 tanks have been deployed by Ukraine  inside Russia, Sky News understands.

North Korea weighed in on the incursion over the weekend, saying it stood with Russia and blaming the attacks on the US and the West.

What's behind the incursion?

Kyiv officials have put forward a number of reasons for the move, among them:

  • Putting Ukraine in a better position for any eventual negotiations that involve land swaps;
  • Creating a buffer zone between Russia and border areas of Ukraine;
  • Destabilising Russian elites and Vladimir Putin's position;
  • Bringing the war home to the Russian population, forcing them to think about what government they support.

Analysts have also said the offensive would ease pressure on other areas of the frontline, as Russia relocates troops to defend Kursk.

Russian response?

It was "astonishing" that there was no significant Russian response last week, ex-UN chief Mark Malloch Brown said.

He said it is likely Russia will soon launch a major deployment of troops to push back Ukrainian forces - but the invasion has revealed the "cumbersomeness" of Russia's "top-down" military.

By the time that move comes, Ukrainian forces "may have had the opportunity to dig themselves in to a point that it becomes a permanent feature of an otherwise barely moving frontline", he said.

Eastern front assault

One of the areas Ukraine had hoped to distract Moscow from with its Kursk attack was the strategic hub of Pokrovsk.

Russian troops have been inching towards the Donetsk city for months, and there appeared to be no let-up last week, with heavy fighting 10km from its outskirts.

"If the [Kursk] objective was to divert the Russian effort from the Donbas, it's failed so far," said Yohann Michel, a French military expert and research fellow at the IESD Institute in Lyon, France.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine was "not for a second" forgetting about the east and promised fresh weapons deliveries to strengthen positions.

Nuclear threat

The last week brought nuclear warnings - some with evidence and some without.

Last Monday, Ukraine and Russia traded blame for a fire that broke out in a cooling tower at Ukraine's occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

On Saturday, a drone dropped an explosive on a nearby road. An image posted by the Russian management of the plant showed a dent in the tarmac the size of a pothole.

A visit by an International Atomic Energy Agency team found no damage to nuclear equipment.

Separately, Moscow accused Ukraine - without providing any evidence - of gearing up to attack Kursk nuclear power plant and of developing a "dirty bomb", an explosive used to scatter radioactive waste.

Kyiv dismissed the "dangerous lies" as "insane Russian propaganda" and reaffirmed its commitment to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty.

Vladimir Putin made similar allegations shortly before launching the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Then, in March the same year, Moscow alleged Ukraine was going to use a dirty bomb. Neither claims were borne out.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer maintains "unwavering" support for Ukraine, and that position has not changed since the incursion into Russia, a government spokesperson has said.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy earlier claimed the UK's support for the war effort had "slowed down" as he called for a removal of restrictions on donated weapons being used inside Russian territory.

Ukrainian forces have been engaged in a military invasion into Russia's Kursk region since 6 August, the aim of which Mr Zelenskyy revealed is to create a buffer zone to prevent further attacks by Moscow across the border.

Writing on X on Sunday, Mr Zelenskyy said: "We are doing everything possible to provide our warriors with the necessary weapons and reinforcements.

"It is crucial that our partners remove barriers that hinder us from weakening Russian positions in the way this war demands."

He added: "Throughout this war, we've seen the UK demonstrate true leadership - in arms, politics, and support for Ukrainian society. This has saved thousands of lives, reflecting the strength of the UK.

"Unfortunately, the situation has slowed down recently. We will discuss how to fix this because long-range capabilities are vital for us. The whole world sees how effective Ukrainians are - how our entire nation defends its independence."

A UK government spokesperson said Mr Starmer "has been clear that UK's support for Ukraine is unwavering".

They said: "That is why he committed to £3bn a year of support to Ukraine, for as long as it takes, within his first week in office.

"Further lethal aid was also accelerated to Kyiv within hours of this government being elected, bolstering the £12bn of UK support already pledged, and ensuring the vital military equipment reaches Ukrainian soldiers on the frontline."

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said the operation in Kursk aims to create a buffer zone.

It's the first time the Ukrainian president has clearly stated the aim of the incursion into Russian territory, which was launched on 6 August.

He has previously said the operation is to protect communities in the bordering Sumy region from constant shelling.

"It is now our primary task in defensive operations overall - to destroy as much Russian war potential as possible and conduct maximum counteroffensive actions," he has just said in his nightly address.

"This includes creating a buffer zone on the aggressor's territory - our operation in the Kursk region."

During the address he also repeated calls to Kyiv's allies to speed up deliveries of military aid - singling out the UK, as well as the US and France.
