Departing from London, you travel to the birthplace of William Shakespeare, Stratford-upon-Avon. Home to the beautiful gardens and thatched Tudor cottage of his wife, Anne Hathaway, you have time to explore the charming village of Stratford-upon-Avon. Enjoy lunch in one of the quaint restaurants before heading to the World Heritage site of Ironbridge, the world’s first ever bridge fully made of iron, set in a distinctive forested gorge on the River Severn. The amazing sights here were developed during the rise of Britain’s Industrial Revolution and there are many attractions within the site for you to learn more about this fascinating period.

You then wind your way down to the riverside town of Shrewsbury, a pretty county town that lies on the banks of the mighty River Severn. The birthplace of Charles Darwin, this bustling market town and its timber framed black and white Tudor buildings are your home for the next two nights.

Your tour takes you to the heart of North Wales today. Firstly, you explore the picture book beauty of Conwy and its picturesque medieval castle. Built by Edward I in the 13th century, this estuary fortress offers spectacular views from the battlements.

Next you roam the impressive mountains and valleys of the Snowdonia National Park, delving into the massive Dinorwic slate quarries and the powerfully dramatic Pass of Llanberis under the shadow of Snowdon, Wales’ highest peak. Relive the struggle for Welsh independence and the rebellious tale of Owain Glyndwr, the last native Prince of Wales before heading back over the English border to your accommodation.

Lying northeast of Shrewsbury is the Peak District National Park, an expanse of rugged moorland with walled pastures and wooded valleys. Picturesque villages and unbeatable scenery line your route as you wind through this area’s unique landscape.

After a spectacular drive, you arrive in the elegant spa town of Buxton. It’s been attracting visitors to enjoy its natural thermal springs since Roman times. And it’s where you can fill up your bottle with crystal-clear water from the famous spring.

In the afternoon, you make your way to the Duke of Devonshire’s famous stately home and gardens at Chatsworth. This renowned building is regularly named the UK’s favourite country house thanks to its immense collection of furniture, priceless paintings, and neoclassical sculptures.

Travelling northwards, you pass through some of the old industrial heartlands of northern England to the historic walled city of York, where you spend the next three nights.

Today there are two major options for the events of your day. Firstly, you can choose to spend the day leisurely exploring the medieval heart of York, an ancient city with a colourful history dating back to the times of the Romans, Vikings and Normans. The towering Gothic spire at York Minster rises above the city, casting its spirituality across the brilliant museums, narrow lanes and distinctive stone city walls.

Alternatively, you could journey out with your guide on a half day excursion across the Yorkshire Dales to the handsome market towns of Knaresborough or Ripon. Take your time with the beautiful architecture and spa town luxuries on offer before heading to some of the more remote valleys and formidably impressive scenery of the Eastern Dale, followed by a free afternoon in York to dine and relax in the city’s plentiful restaurants and shops.

You will leave the London based tour here and be picked up tomorrow by the tour bus from Edinburgh. Your driver/guide will let you know all the details of pickup times for the next day.

A relaxing day that offers you the chance to spend time in the medieval city of York, a Roman settlement whose rich history includes Viking and Norman occupations and the brutally divisive War of the Roses. Take your time to discover the incredible city architecture, most notably the fabulous cathedral of York Minster.

From here, you leave York and head to the North Sea coast of Yorkshire, with the first stop being the magnificently expansive North Yorkshire Moors National park.

After relishing the abundance of nature and scenery here, you lunch in Whitby, a bustling fishing port and the inspiration for the fertile imagination of Bram Stoker, author of Dracula. Witness the Royal Hotel where he conjured his blood-curdling tale, then enjoy a little free time before travelling to the conservation village of Robin Hood’s Bay*, a pristinely preserved fishing village of winding lanes and narrow alleys. After relaxing in this unique location, you return to York for the evening.

* The minicoach cannot access the main village because of local restrictions. The coach will drop you at the top of the village and you must walk down (and back up!) a steep hill to reach the old village centre.

You move westerly into the superb scenery of the Yorkshire Dales National park, an area brimming with wildlife and rich cultural heritage. Densely packed with opportunities for recreation and relaxation, this nature haven gives unparalleled access to the North’s innate beauty.

Continuing west, you pass through the Northern Dales, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the centre of the Dales energetic cattle trade.

The last stop of the day is in the pleasant market town of Keswick*, where you will be dropped off at your accommodation, free to explore the charms of the area.

After breakfast, you behold the mystery of the Castlerigg standing stones, built over five thousand years ago and the scene of many strange ancient rituals. Traveling on, you arrive by the shores of Ullswater, known was England’s most beautiful lake. A short walk along the shore and through a forest takes you to the mighty Aira Force waterfall, an excellent place for keen photographers.

You head south over the snaking Kirkstone Pass, stopping at Windermere for the choice of relaxing with a hearty lunch whilst gazing across the region’s mountains and lakes or taking a leisurely cruise on the lake. Leaving this romantic setting, you head to the well maintained conservation village of Hawkshead and the school where the renowned poet William Wordsworth attended grammar school.

After a little spare time in the village, you navigate through the prim country lanes towards Grasmere, described by Wordsworth as “the loveliest spot that man hath found”. Visit the great man’s Dove Cottage or enjoy the peace and tranquility of the poet’s Daffodil Garden near the banks of the River Rothy before heading back to Keswick** for the night.

Waving farewell to the Lakes, you ascend the Hartside Pass, which boasts a famous view of the hills and mountains of Scotland and the English Lake District. Standing at over 1900ft, this is an inimitable experience.

You continue to Hadrian’s Wall, the Roman Emperor Hadrian’s fortified construction designed to keep the Scottish tribes out of the Roman Empire. Roam in the footsteps of the Roman Centurions who patrolled this desolate frontier. Follow the ancient Roman Dere Street, then cross the border into Scotland and head to the local town of Jedburgh and the ruins of Jedburgh Abbey, where you stop for refreshments.

For your last stop, you make your way to the incredible Scott’s View, which looks out over the River Tweed and the Cheviot Hills which roughly form the Scottish-English border. You then make your way to the great city of Edinburgh.

We book accommodation with third-party providers on your behalf and each property sets their own rates. Rates vary considerably depending on the accommodation standard, facilities, location, and local demand. We therefore can’t tell you exactly how much your accommodation will cost until your request has been allocated to a specific property.

As a guide, you can expect to pay the following prices,  per person per night :

NOTE: Prices quoted are for guidance only and may be higher on some occasions, especially for last-minute bookings and when demand is high (E.g. peak season, weekends, holidays, special events etc)

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 - edinburgh, holyrood palace and edinburgh castle.

Join your tour manager at London Kings Cross Train Station for a beautiful, scenic journey from London to Edinburgh by high speed train. With onboard WiFi (charges apply) and a fully stocked shop, you can enjoy breakfast in England and lunch in Scotland.

On arrival in Edinburgh the day begins with a two hour fully guided coach tour.  Discover the adventure and misfortune of Scotland’s tragic queen, Mary Queen of Scots, as we start our tour at Holyrood Palace.  This 900 year old Palace was built on the orders of King David after an encounter with a mythical white Stag, and remains today as the official residence of the British monarchy in Scotland.

After a brief stop at the Palace it’s on to one of Edinburgh’s highest points in Holyrood Park before continuing our tour of the ‘Old Town’. The tour will include some of the cities most famous landmarks including Edinburgh Castle, National Museum of Scotland, Grassmarket, Greyfriars Bobby and the Elephant House coffee house where J.K.Rowling first penned Harry Potter.

We depart the Old Town and continue towards the Georgian New Town, home to some of the world’s most famous writers, scholars and inventors.  The Scots have long been at the forefront of innovation and discovery from Alexander Fleming’s discovery of penicillin to John Logie Baird’s invention of television; James Simpson and chloroform to Alexander Bell and the telephone.  Where would we be today without Scottish scientists and inventors?  In the fictional world many characters would not exist were it not for authors born and raised in Edinburgh’s New town including Harry Potter, Long John Silver, Jekyll & Hyde, Peter Pan and Sherlock Holmes.

After a guided drive through the elegant 18th century squares and terraces of the New Town we transfer you to your nearby accommodation, a chance to have a late lunch and visit some of the attractions or sites your guide will have talked about on the tour.  Your tour manager will remain available to provide local information, help and advice.

Optional Ghosts and Ghouls evening tour – 20.00pm

A spine tingling evening with ghoulish tales of torture and witchcraft as you learn of Edinburgh’s ghostly past!  The guided tour takes place in medieval closes and the haunted Blair Street Underground vaults. Included in the tour is a shot of Dewar’s super Scotch Whisky to keep you warm on this chilling tour!!

Rest of the evening free to enjoy Edinburgh’s atmospheric old inns to sample some local ales and whisky, joined by the tour guide.  A great opportunity for you to get to know some other fellow group members on the tour.

Day 2 - Loch Ness and Inverness

Enjoy a full free day in Edinburgh to visit one of the many amazing attractions on offer.  Time to explore the Royal Mile, visit the Castle, enter Holyrood Palace or one of the many free museums and galleries in the city.

Loch Ness and Scottish Highlands Upgrade – £59.  Prepare to see some amazing scenery on this fully guided day trip, with entry included to the stunning Urquhart Castle on the banks of Loch Ness. Leave city life behind as you head into a land of mountains, lakes (lochs), beauty, mystery and legend!

Depart Edinburgh and travel along the Forth Valley towards Stirling, passing the famous battle site of Bannockburn (1314) and into William Wallace (Braveheart) country.  See Stirling Castle and the National Wallace Monument, where the mighty hero defeated the English forces of King Edward I at Stirling Bridge in 1297.

Entering the Trossachs National Park we make our official entrance into the Highlands and the land of the outlaw Rob Roy.  After crossing The Rannoch Moor, one of Europe’s most sparsely populated areas, we come across the ‘weeping’ Glen Coe.  Brace yourselves for the treacherous tale of Highland rivalries, as the MacDonald clan were betrayed and brutally slaughtered by their bitter enemies, the Campbells.

After a stop for lunch with Scottish specialities Haggis or even Highland Whisky, we enter the Great Glen and follow the Caledonian Canal in the shadow of Ben Nevis, Britain’s highest mountain.  The Great Glen is one of the most picturesque parts of the British Isles, filled with perfectly reflecting waters of Loch Lochy, Loch Oich and the most famous of all, Loch Ness.  We drive along the entire 23 miles (37km) of Loch Ness as your guide tells you tales of sightings and encounters of this elusive beast.

We stop at the widest point of Loch Ness for an hour to explore Urquhart Castle with entry included.  A castle of history and mystery, and the place where the highest numbers of sightings of the Loch Ness Monster have been made.  From here you will have the option of taking a boat cruise on the Loch (entry extra, payable on the day), you will never get a better chance to Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster!

After the Castle we continue to our northernmost point at Inverness, the Capital of the Highlands, before turning south past the site of the Battle of Culloden and journey through the Cairngorms and our return to Edinburgh.

Please note: because of the long distances this particular excursion entails (well over 500km a day), which may not make the best suited day tour for infants younger than 3 years of age.

Day 3 - Calton Hill and Edinburgh Castle

Join your tour manager for a morning walk up Calton Hill for views of the City of Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth.  From here you can see the 171 metre tower in honour of the great Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson and his victories over Napoleon Bonaparte.  Next to the tower is the National Monument of Scotland which commemorates Scottish soldiers and sailors who died during the Napoleonic wars.  From here it is clear to see why many refer to Edinburgh as ‘the Athens of the North.’

From Calton Hill the tour manager will accompany you to Edinburgh Castle (entry extra), an impenetrable fortress which has stood overlooking the city for over 1000 years.  Learn about the Scottish Monarchy, Scottish heroes such as William Wallace or Robert the Bruce and see the Crown jewels of Scotland.

Whisky Tasting upgrade – £22 – ( only adults over 18s).  A transfer and tour of Glenkinchie whisky distillery, the closest to Edinburgh.  After experiencing the detailed and highly skilled process of making a bottle of ‘Scotch’ you will have the chance to sample some of the whiskies made here.  If you select this day trip you will be dropped back in Edinburgh after the tour in time for the coach departure transfer to the train station.

Our departure transfer coach will collect you from the accommodation at 13:30pm for the transfer to Edinburgh Waverley station, train departing at 14:51pm for the return journey to London Kings Cross. Arrival time in London Kings Cross is shortly after 20:30pm.

Where does the trip depart from?

Each UK trip will have a dedicated pick up point in central London.  Shorter duration trips will normally depart from Victoria Coach Station, with longer duration trips leaving from the London Reception Centre, near to Waterloo train station.  Departure points will be confirmed before booking a tour.

Can I get picked up from my hotel?

Pick up from hotels is not possible.  You will need to make your own way to the departure point.  However some tours do have a designated hotel departure, which you can stay in prior to the trip.  Please ask at time of booking for departure points and we can direct you to local hotels.

Are entrance fees included?

Entrance fees are included where specified on the itinerary.

Can I pay in dollars?

All tours are quoted and charged in pounds sterling, but you can pay using your local card and currency.  We will debit the card in pounds sterling and your bank will use their exchange rate at that time to deduct the amount in your local currency.

What time does the trip leave and return?

Departure times will vary depending on the itinerary.  European tours departing from London will usually leave between 05.00am and 07.00am.  Multi day UK tours will leave between 06.00am and 07:30am.  Day trips will depart between 07.00am and 09.00am.  European and worldwide tours that start in an overseas city will have a welcome reception on day one of the tour which is usually around 18.00pm.

Tour Itinerary

Day 1 - stratford-on-avon.

Departing from London, you travel to the birthplace of William Shakespeare, Stratford-on-Avon. Home to the beautiful gardens and thatched Tudor cottage of his wife, Anne Hathaway, you have time to explore the charming village of Stratford.

Day 2 - Conwy and Snowdonia National Park

Day 3 - Peak District National Park and York

Lying northeast of Shrewsbury are the incredible peaks and valleys of the Peak District National Park. Picturesque villages and unbeatable scenery line your route as you wind through the park’s inimitable landscape.

After a visually spectacular drive, you arrive in the charmingly attractive village of Castleton, nestled in the Vale of Hope. Overlooked by Peveril Castle, this hospitable place offers a chance for a pretty picnic and to enjoy the fine local fare.

In the afternoon, you make your way to the Duke of Devonshire’s famous mansion house and gardens at Chatsworth. Home to the Cavendish family, this renowned building is regularly named the UK’s favourite country house thanks to its fantastically large collection of furniture, priceless paintings, Old Master drawings and neo-classical sculptures.

Travelling east from the estate, you pass through rolling green hills to the historic walled city of York, where you will spend the next three nights.

Day 4 - York

Day 5 - North Yorkshire Moors National park and Whitby

Witness the Royal Hotel where he conjured his blood-curdling tale, then enjoy a little free time before travelling to the conservation village of Robin Hood’s Bay*, a pristine preserved fishing village of winding lanes and narrow alleys.

After relaxing in this unique location, you return to York for the evening.

The minicoach cannot access the main village because of local restrictions.

The coach will drop you at the top of the village and you must walk down (and back up!) a steep hill to reach the old village centre.

Day 6 - Yorkshire Dales National park and Keswick

You move westerly into the superb scenery of the Yorkshire Dales National park, an area brimming with wildlife and rich cultural heritage. Densely packed with opportunities for recreation and relaxation, this nature haven gives unparalleled access to the North’s innate beauty.

Continuing west, you pass through the Northern Dales, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the centre of the Dales energetic cattle trade.

The last stop of the day is in the pleasant market town of Keswick, where you will be dropped off at your accommodation, free to explore the charms of the area.

During July/early August this tour may stay in Windermere instead.

Day 7 - Castlerigg, Ullswater and Hawkeshead

After breakfast, you behold the mystery of the Castlerigg standing stones, built over five thousand years ago and the scene of many strange ancient rituals.

Travelling on, you arrive by the shores of Ullswater, known was England’s most beautiful lake.

Leaving this romantic setting, you head to the well maintained conservation village of Hawkeshead and the school where the renowned poet William Wordsworth attended grammar school.

After a little spare time in the village, you navigate through the prim country lanes towards Grasmere, described by Wordsworth as “the loveliest spot that man hath found”. Visit the great man’s Dove Cottage or enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the poet’s Daffodil Garden near the banks of the River Rothy before heading back to Keswick for the night.

Day 8 - Hadrian’s Wall and Jedburgh

Waving farewell to the Lakes, you ascend the Hartside Pass, which boasts a famous view of the hills and mountains of Scotland and the English Lake District. Standing at over 1900ft, this is an inimitable experience.

You continue to Hadrian’s Wall, the Roman Emperor Hadrian’s fortified construction designed to keep the Scottish tribes out of the Roman Empire. Roam in the footsteps of the Roman Centurions who patrolled this desolate frontier. Follow the ancient Roman Dere Street, and then cross the border into Scotland and head to the local town of Jedburgh and the ruins of Jedburgh Abbey, where you stop for refreshments.

For your last stop, you make your way to the incredible Scott’s View, which looks out over the River Tweed and the Cheviot Hills which roughly form the Scottish-English border.

You then make your way to the great city of Edinburgh.

How to Travel from London to Edinburgh by Train, Bus, Car, and Plane

tour from london to edinburgh

TripSavvy / Jess Macdonald

Edinburgh is the Scottish capital and sits about 400 miles from its English counterpart in the south. You'll have to traverse nearly all of the United Kingdom from south to north to get there, so flying is the fastest way to complete the journey. However, the train takes almost the same amount of time and also lets passengers enjoy the lush beauty of the landscape that you would otherwise miss. You can also enjoy the scenery for a fraction of the price by taking the bus, although that is a much longer trip. If you have access to a car, driving yourself is the best way to truly experience life in the U.K. outside of the major cities.

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From London to Edinburgh?

If you don't mind an all-day (or all-night) bus trip, you can book a bus from London to Edinburgh on National Express or Megabus . It's a long journey and involves nearly 11 hours seated on the bus, but when tickets are as cheap as $20, it's hard to turn down. Megabus is about two hours faster than other services, getting you to Edinburgh in roughly nine hours. You can typically choose from four daily buses, two that leaves in the morning and two more that leave at night. The overnight bus is an ideal option so you don't miss out on a full day of your trip while also saving yourself a night of accommodation.

Regardless of the company you choose, you catch the bus in London from Victoria Station, with connections to the Circle, Victoria, and District lines of the Underground. The Edinburgh Bus Station is in the city center next to St. Andrew Square and is easily accessible to most parts of the city by foot.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From London to Edinburgh?

The method of transport with the least amount of travel time is flying, and you can choose from one of several direct daily flights between London and Edinburgh. The total time in the air is only 1 hour, 20 minutes and flights start as low as $30 for a one-way ticket. The primary airlines that fly this popular route are Easyjet and British Airways, with flights departing from any one of the several London airports—Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton, or Stansted.

Heathrow is the largest of the airports and is the one that's best connected to the city center, with an express train from Paddington Station to the terminal. You can also take a train to Gatwick or Luton from the city center, while Stansted is only accessible by bus. Edinburgh Airport is located about 10 miles outside of the city, but you can take a tram or bus to the city center.

Although a plane is ostensibly the fastest way to get to Edinburgh from London, you also have to factor in all of the time it takes to get to and from the airport, check-in for your flight, pass through security, and wait at your gate. All things considered, flying and taking the train take almost the same amount of time.

How Long Is the Train Ride?

The fastest trains get you from London to Edinburgh in only 4 hours, 20 minutes. Considering that trains leave from King's Cross Station in the center of London and bring you directly to central Edinburgh, the total travel time of the train is more or less the same as going by plane. Taking the train also has the added benefits of enjoying the English countryside scenery while you travel as well as being the most environmentally friendly option.

Train tickets start at about $33 when you can find the cheapest "Advance" ticket prices. As those sell out, however, tickets jump up in price dramatically and can cost over $200 for a one-way ticket during peak travel times. Flexibility is key for finding the best deals, so try looking at different times and days to see if prices fluctuate. You should also buy tickets early to find the cheapest seats, as the Advance tickets usually go on sale about eight to 10 weeks before the travel date.

The drive to Edinburgh is about 400 miles and takes seven hours if you drive straight through along the direct route on the M1 highway. Traffic around London and Edinburgh can cause major delays at the beginning and end of your trip, but the bulk of the journey should be easy driving with the scenic countryside. Parking within the city center of Edinburgh is complicated at best. However, there are several Park & Ride structures outside of the city that offer free or inexpensive parking spaces and then shuttle customers into the city. Once you're in Edinburgh, everything is accessible on foot or public transportation and your vehicle won't be necessary.

When Is the Best Time to Travel to Edinburgh?

Being Scotland, Edinburgh is cold and rainy in the winter (as well as much of spring). The summer months are the most comfortable time to enjoy the Scottish capital when the average high hovers around 65 degrees F and there are more days of sunshine than overcast. August not only all but guarantees you good weather, but the Edinburgh Fringe Festival is taking place all throughout the month. It's the largest arts festival in the entire world and it completely inundates the city for four weeks with performances, art shows, music, and entertainment. It's also the busiest time to visit the city, but it's a uniquely Edinburgh experience you won't regret seeing.

Winter may be chilly, but spending the holidays in Edinburgh has its own special magic, especially if you're visiting during the special New Year's celebration of Hogmanay . This three-day event starts on December 30 and goes until January 1 of the new year, and it's a special Scottish tradition that more than makes up for the cold weather.

What's the Most Scenic Route to Edinburgh?

If you have your own vehicle and want to get to Edinburgh quickly, the M1 highway will get you there in about seven hours. But one of the best parts of driving is being able to take your time and explore along the way. If you take the M6 highway along the west side of the country, you'll pass through worthwhile towns such as Oxford, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Liverpool, and Manchester before continuing through the photogenic national parks in northern England. The drive itself is minimally longer than the fastest route, but you'll definitely want to make pitstops along the way to see all the country has to offer.

What Is There to Do in Edinburgh?

Edinburgh offers all types of historical, cultural, and culinary delights, so it's no surprise that this Scottish capital is the second most popular city to visit in the U.K. after London. Edinburgh Castle overlooks the city and gives visitors an educational history lesson along with breathtaking views. Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and still retains the medieval architecture that it was founded with. Nearby is New Town, praised for its urban planning which culminates around the famous Princes Street, popular for shopping, restaurants, and going out.

Trains leave King's Cross Station in London and bring you directly to central Edinburgh in about four hours and 20 minutes.

Train is the best mode of travel as it's easy, convenient, and likely the fastest option (if you count the additional airport time you'd need if flying).

The drive to Edinburgh is about 400 miles and takes seven hours if you drive straight through along the direct route on the M1 highway.

The buses or coaches that journey between the two cities generally depart from London Victoria Coach station for National Express and Megabus, arriving at Edinburgh Bus Station on Elder street (near St Andrews Square). National Express has around 4 daily services and Mega-bus around 4 connecting services.

These are generally the cheapest form of travel, they also take around 9 ½ hours, depending on roads/weather etc.  The amount of luggage taken can be restrictive. You can break your journey up with this option.

London to Edinburgh by plane.

Whilst this may seem at first glance an ideal way to move between London and Edinburgh it has several logistical issues to be considered.

While it is the fastest direct line of travel (around 332 air miles once in the air) with a flight time of around 1 hour 20 minutes it is important to factor in the travel time to and from the airports.

The cost of the flight itself may seem reasonable but add checked baggage and costs rise. These are smaller aeroplanes used for domestic flights and weight/space is of a premium.  If you have carry on only this may make flying a more cost-effective option.

One obvious disadvantage of flying is missing out on enjoying the scenery of the English countryside as you travel.

There are several London airports with flights to Edinburgh including London Heathrow, London City Airport, London Gatwick Airport

Several operators fly between London airports, including British Airways, Easyjet, KLM, American Airlines as examples.

For flights check Omio for prices and schedules.

car keys.

This is, of course, an option but firstly driving in London is not advised. The traffic congestion is immense and the time to even get out of London can be lengthy.

Options for car hire from the principal airports can be considered if this is a preference particularly if you wish to visit destinations along the way to Scotland.

The most direct road route is about 400 miles and can take around 7 to 8 hours depending on the day/time of setting out.

Car hire gives flexibility to a travel itinerary but can be demanding on time and budget (consider car hire costs plus insurance and the high cost of petrol).

Visitors not familiar with driving on the left may find it stressful. We recommend Tripiamo – an online resource which through its online guides prepares North Americans to drive in the UK. You can listen to our podcast where we chat with founder John Cortese about Tripiamo .

Good to know – Most availability for UK car hire is for manual transmission cars and not automatics. An automatic will cost more and must be booked in advance.

Taylor Swift Eras tour: Wembley setlist and everything you need to know

W ell, so long, London. After 43 sold-out performances across Europe – including UK dates in Edinburgh, Liverpool, Cardiff and the capital – Taylor Swift’s colossal, record-breaking Eras tour will return to Wembley Stadium tonight for a final five-night run.

What time do gates open?

  • Secret songs

How long is the concert?

The London dates come immediately after the singer’s three dates in Vienna, Austria were cancelled last week after intelligence services foiled an ISIS terrorist plot. Wembley has reportedly ramped up security for Swift’s London gigs, with policing minister Diana Johnson saying police will “be looking at all the intelligence” related to the shows.

The city itself is putting its sparkliest foot forward to welcome fans from around the world for the Eras tour. Pop-up events taking place over the next week range from a free ‘Taylor on Strings’ classical concert to a themed Swiftie brunch at Piccadilly restaurant Gaucho, friendship-bracelet adorned pastries at popular eatery Buns from Home and free-to-see art and murals near Wembley Park. Fans in town should also check out the V&A’s excellent Songbook Trail , which is free to enter and features many of Swift’s costumes and props.

Of course, for those fans lucky enough to be going to Wembley – as any Swiftie knows, it was an almost-impossible task to get tickets, with millions wanting to see what my colleague, Neil McCormick , called a “six star” concert that is more akin to a religious ritual – buying tickets was only half of the battle. You (or your household’s resident Swiftie) may have planned an outfit and made the friendship bracelets, but are you ready for a three-hour extravaganza packed with secret clues and rituals?

Eras tour UK dates

Swift is playing five more dates in the UK and Ireland:

  • August 15-20: London, Wembley Stadium

Here’s your one-stop shop for everything you need to know about the UK and Ireland leg of the Eras tour – past, present and future – from timings, support acts and the 46-strong setlist to potential secret songs and special guests.

Fans with early entry should be able to enter Wembley from 3.30pm, with general ticket holders permitted from 4pm.

Swift’s main performance will begin around 7pm (with the primary support act, Paramore, taking to the stage around 6.15pm, and the earlier opener expected around 5pm).

Which songs are on the setlist?

In order, the full setlist is as follows:

From Lover:

  • Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince
  • Cruel Summer
  • You Need to Calm Down

From Fearless:

  • You Belong With Me
  • We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
  • I Knew You Were Trouble
  • All Too Well (10 minute version)

From Speak Now:

From Reputation:

  • …Ready For It?
  • Don’t Blame Me
  • Look What You Made Me Do

From Folklore/Evermore:

  • Champagne Problems
  • Illicit Affairs
  • My Tears Ricochet
  • Blank Space
  • Shake It Off
  • Wildest Dreams

From The Tortured Poets Department:

  • But Daddy I Love Him
  • So High School
  • Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me?
  • The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived
  • I Can Do It With A Broken Heart

Surprise song section (see below)

From Midnights:

  • Lavender Haze
  • Midnight Rain
  • Vigilante Shit

The majority of the Eras setlist hasn’t changed since Swift kicked off the tour in Arizona last March – it still opens with Lover and ends with Midnights, spanning 46 songs and 10 albums (her poor Debut still doesn’t get a look in). But the arrival of The Tortured Poets Department back in April resulted in a predictable switch-up, with certain songs taken off the setlist (The Archer, Long Live, The 1, The Last Great American Dynasty, ’Tis the Damn Season and Tolerate It) to make room for seven from the new album.

Fans disappointed at the changes can always hold out hope that one will appear as a secret song during the acoustic set – which immediately follows The Tortured Poets Department’s section.

The secret songs played so far – and what could be next

The secret song (or acoustic) section of the show is easily the most anticipated by fans. Every night is different – although Swift has abandoned her rule from the US leg that secret songs can only be played once, unless a mistake was made – with Swift having 11 albums of material to choose from.

Swift has swapped performing two full secret songs for ‘mashups’ including, usually, two or three tracks. Here is the full list of secret songs from each UK show so far, and which could be next.

Edinburgh night one:

  • Would’ve Could’ve, Should’ve/I Know Places
  • ‘Tis the Damn Season/Daylight

Edinburgh night two:

  • The Bolter/Getaway Car
  • All of the Girls You’ve Loved Before/Crazier

Edinburgh night three:

  • It’s Nice to Have a Friend/Dorothea
  • Haunted/Exile

Liverpool night one:

  • I Can See You/Mine
  • Cornelia Street/Maroon

Liverpool night two:

  • This Is What You Came For/Gold Rush
  • The Great War/You’re Losing Me

Liverpool night three:

  • Carolina/No Body, No Crime
  • The Manuscript/Red

Cardiff:

  • I Forgot That You Existed/This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things
  • I Hate It Here/The Lakes

London night one:

  • Hits Different/Death By A Thousand Cuts
  • The Black Dog/Come Back Be Here/Maroon

London night two:

  • thanK you aIMee/Mean
  • Castles Crumbling (with Hayley Williams)

London night three:

  • Us (with Gracie Abrams)
  • Out of the Woods/Is It Over Now?/Clean

Dublin night one:

  • State of Grace/You’re on Your Own Kid
  • Sweet Nothing/Hoax

Dublin night two:

  • The Albatross/Dancing With Our Hands Tied
  • This Love/Ours

Dublin night three:

  • Clara Bow/The Lucky One
  • You’re On Your Own Kid

Our predictions:

British fans will be delighted that London Boy and So Long, London live to see another day as potential surprise songs; surely, the first will be turned into a shorter mash-up (I can’t see her playing it in full, what with it being a love letter to her ex boyfriend - awkward) and the latter played on the final night at Wembley on August 20. There’s a few collaborations with British artists that haven’t been played yet, either: I Don’t Wanna Live Forever (featuring One Direction’s Zayn Malik), Everything Has Changed (Ed Sheeran) or Florida!!! (Florence Welch), so they’re looking likely.

Taylor Swift’s set lasts for three hours and 15 minutes: up there with career-spanning performances from Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and The Cure.

The main show begins with the appearance of a ticking clock on stage, which counts down from a total of two minutes while songs from Lady Gaga (Applause) and Lesley Gore (You Don’t Own Me) play in the background.

Once the countdown reaches zero, dancers brandishing ginormous, pastel-hued flags walk out on stage to a backing track listing her various albums (the crowd’s biggest scream being reserved for when it says “My name is Taylor, and I was born in 1989!”). Then, the fabric flags fall to the floor, lifts and reveals Swift beneath, in the centre, ready to be hoisted up on a rising stage block to sing a short version of opener Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince (from Lover) before going straight into her biggest streaming hit, Cruel Summer.

Swift takes no substantial breaks during the three-hour plus set – aside from various outfit or stage changes in between Eras – but there are fleeting moments you can rest, including after the Speak Now section (which is a mere single song, Enchanted) which has a slightly longer interval before Swift begins to perform songs from Red. Don’t forget, either, to put on the special wristband you’re handed on entry – it flashes different colours throughout the set and can often signal surprise songs or special moments.

Prepare your friendship bracelets

Whether you’re a bona fide Swiftie or the parent or guardian of one, I guarantee you will have heard of friendship bracelets. Inspired by a lyric from Midnights’ You’re On Your Own, Kid (“So make the friendship bracelets / Take the moment and taste it”), Swift’s fans wear armfuls of homemade, largely plastic bracelets featuring beads that spell out song names or inside jokes.

Then, once at the show, the fans “trade” bracelets with each other to make new friends. The internet is full of tutorials on how to make them, but if your show is drawing closer and you’re yet to make any, Amazon Prime is your best bet.

What to pack?

Despite what Gen Zs on TikTok may suggest, the Eras tour is just a concert. Thus, it doesn’t necessitate buying fancy new cameras, iPhones, earplugs or battery packs – but you would be wise to pack a jumper (it gets cold – and the ones for sale on the official merchandise will set you back around £60); those friendship bracelets, as well, of course, as your ticket.

What to wear?

Sequins, glitter, cowboy hats – anything goes, as long as you go for it. Find the link to our all-ages guide on what to wear to Swift’s Era’s tour below.

What to wear to the Eras tour

Learn the fan lyrics

If you’re lucky enough to have tickets to the Eras tour, learning 11 albums worth of songs – plus the Vault tracks from her ‘Taylor’s Version’ rerecords – might seem like an impossible task. Unluckily, it’s not just Swift’s 274 official singles (46 of which make up the setlist) that you need to know, because the crowd adds special lines to multiple songs.

During Delicate, from Reputation, fans yell the chant “One, two, three, let’s go b—h!” after she sings “We can’t make any promises, now can we, babe?” Chart-topping revenge anthem Bad Blood, meanwhile, taken from 2014’s 1989, sees fans screech the end of the line “You forgive / You forget / But you never let it go”. Swift’s knowing winks during the songs indicate she knows exactly what the crowd is gearing up for.

Who are the support acts?

US pop-rock band Paramore are the primary support act for all UK Eras shows, and typically begin their 45-minute set at 6.15pm. There are extra support acts for the final five shows at Wembley Stadium: Sofia Isella (15 August), Holly Humberstone (16 August), Suki Waterhouse (17 August), Maisie Peters (19 August) and Raye (20 August).

A guide to the Eras support acts

Standout moments so far – concert by concert

The Eras tour is a tightly-run ship revolving around immaculate choreography, a watertight setlist and a performer renowned for her professionalism, but that doesn’t mean every single night is the same. The weather can be temperamental, Swift could bring out a special guest, or you might just spot your favourite A-lister lurking within the crowd (or, more likely, the coveted VIP tent in front of the sound desk). And of course, there’s the secret song section, for which we’ve dedicated a separate section above this one.

Edinburgh: Night One

Fans present at the opening show in Edinburgh were quick to record the moment Swift had to take a break from performing Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve on acoustic guitar – as part of the secret songs set – because of a pesky hand-cramp. As Swift put it: “My hand has frozen in a weird way. This has never happened before!”

Videos of her shivering on stage suggest the reliably-volatile Scottish weather was to blame. Another highlight came courtesy of her backing dancer Kam, recently in the news for his decision to buy a kilt (after worrying it was cultural appropriation), who contributes a city-specific line to We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together – Edinburgh’s first one being “Ya wee raj”. Think of it as Taylor does Trainspotting.

Edinburgh: Night Two

Proving that the secret song section is truly what gets the crowd (and internet) talking, Swift’s decision to perform Crazier, a track taken from 2009’s Hannah Montana: The Movie – that she has never played live before – had Swifties around the globe hyperventilating, not least because its inclusion suggested it will appear on the rerecording of her debut album.

Elsewhere, fans of Amazon Prime Video’s hit Outlander would have been wise to peer towards the VIP tent, where the show’s cast – including Sam Heughan – were busy dancing the night away.

Edinburgh: Night Three

Scottish singer Nina Nesbitt, who watched the third show from the VIP tent, shared a moving message on Instagram about her long-term love for Swift. The 29-year-old, who hails from West Lothian, wrote: “It was so special to hear the songs that made me want to pick up a guitar back in the place I’m from”.

Swift’s influence was also keenly felt during her surprise performance of Exile, in which the crowd – all 73,000 of them – dutifully sang Bon Iver’s parts of the song; you can see her joy in videos from the performance in which she’s grinning, in disbelief, that this many people know her music this inside-out.

Liverpool: Night One

You’ll be surprised to learn that Liverpool’s biggest Swiftie is not, in fact, a random teenage girl singing along to Fearless in her bedroom. Jurgen Klopp, the former Reds manager, who has spoken of his love for Swift’s music before, showed up on the first night at Anfield (wearing pink heart-shaped sunglasses, no less) to show his support. Elsewhere, Swift performed I Can See You, a Vault track from Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), as the first secret song - fitting given it was filmed in the city last year. No appearance from Sir Paul McCartney - also an avid Swiftie - but there’s two nights left…

Swift used her 100th Eras Tour show to confirm that the tour will end this year, ending speculation that more dates would be added. “The celebration of the 100th show for me means this is the very first time I’ve acknowledged to myself and admitted that this tour is going to end in December. Like, that’s it,” she told the rain-sodden crowd at Anfield. “I think that this tour has really become my entire life,” she said during her intro to All Too Wel. “It’s taken over everything. I think I once had hobbies, but I don’t know what they were anymore.

“All I do when I’m not on stage is sit at home and try to think of clever acoustic song mash-ups and think about what you might want to hear.”

Liverpool: Night Two

Stood just a few heads back from where Swift was seated for the surprise songs set, nothing could have prepared me for the first track: This Is What You Came For, the 2016 hit originally performed by Calvin Harris and Rihanna – that Swift wrote. It will surely be on Reputation (Taylor’s Version); Harris, Swift’s superstar DJ ex-boyfriend, clearly couldn’t be bothered to deal with the social media attention, because he deleted his account on X after this performance. I’ve seen Swift on multiple tours, in wildly different stages of her career, but seeing her on Eras – so confident and self-assured – is a privilege.

British rising star Griff, who will open for Swift on the second night at Wembley, was also present - warning that “if I don’t have a voice next week at Wembley it’s because I lost it at Eras a week early.”

Liverpool: Night Three

A highlight of the Red set is always We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together, when Swift’s dancer Kem tries out his best local slang. The third night in Scouseland saw him listen to the TikTok advice and yell “Jog on lad,” much to the delight of the crowd. The Red trend continued through to the surprise songs, when Swift performed the title track from that album – an ode to love, but for one night only, Liverpool FC. Or, of course, the Kansas City Chiefs.

A special mention goes to the Swifties who dedicated a selection of friendship bracelets to victims of the Hillsborough disaster.

Swift had obviously been doing her homework before heading to the Welsh capital’s Principality Stadium, as she uttered a number of Welsh phrases throughout the gig, from “Shwmae Cardiff” (Hello Cardiff) to “Croeso I daith Eras” (Welcome to the Eras tour) and “Un, dau, tri, pedwar” (1, 2, 3, 4). Fan favourite dancer Kam, meanwhile, went for “ych a fi!” (gross) during We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together. As the only indoor/closed-roof concert of the UK leg of Eras, meanwhile, some fans in Cardiff were left disappointed there was no firework display during Karma, the closing song.

London: Night One

The first night in the capital was always going to be starry, and Wembley certainly didn’t disappoint. Swift’s boyfriend, the NFL star Travis Kelce, showed up with his brother Jason, along with supermodel Cara Delevingne, fashion designer Stella McCartney, actresses Rosamund Pike, Salma Hayek and Nicola Coughlan and even Labour leader Keir Starmer (with his wife, Victoria). Meanwhile, the Prince of Wales opted to celebrate his 42nd birthday at the show , watching from a private box with his children.

As always, the surprise songs segment proved a winner, as Swift launched into The Black Dog, for the first time ever, which was inspired by her past visits to an unassuming boozer in Vauxhall. Swift has always had a special relationship with London, having lived here for a time when she was dating British actor Joe Alwyn, meaning her first night at Wembley (she has played at the stadium before, as part of 2018’s Reputation tour) was always going to be special. Little wonder she called it “the most exhilarating city in the world”! She even got the weather to bend to her every whim, with the day’s rare sun giving way to rain during Midnight Rain.

London: Night Two

The second night at Wembley took a look at Friday’s guestlist and said oh no, you’re not getting away with that. Two future Kings and a (potential) future Prime Minister had nothing on the second night’s VIP guests: Tom Cruise, Greta Gerwig, Liam Hemsworth, Rachel Zegler, Jamie Dornan, Hugh Grant (eating a bag of carrots in the VIP tent, no less), Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Emily Maitlis, Beth Mead and, again, Swift’s boyfriend Travis Kelce (seemingly with his full family in tow).

The show turned into a “who’s who” of Hollywood, but it was the appearance of Swift’s beloved mother, Andrea - who got choked up by a hero’s welcome from fans - that touched the heartstrings. Eighteen years of guiding her daughter later, and she’s the biggest popstar in the world, her tickets a hotter commodity than gas or oil (*kind of).

Also, the secret song choices made this path even more poignant: first up was thanK you aIMee (the capitalised letters spell out Kim, widely thought to be a reference to former nemesis Kim Kardashian) crossed with Mean, Swift’s Grammy-winning country single about classmate jibes and irrelevant haters from Speak Now, where she swapped the lyrics to “Someday I’ll be singing this song at Wembley”. Then came a long-awaited duet with Paramore’s Hayley Williams for Castles Crumbling, also from Speak Now, a sparkling showcase for both women’s talents - and mutual respect and adoration.

London: Night Three

Travis Kelce appearing on stage as one of Swift’s backing performers for I Can Do It With A Broken Heart! The Sir Paul McCartney trading friendship bracelets from the VIP tent, where he was hanging out with daughter Stella! Swift bringing close friend Gracie Abrams out to sing Us, their collaboration from Abrams’s new album . Once again, it was the VIP guests who got the crowd talking: Macca at the top, closely followed by Jon Bon Jovi, Ellie Goulding, Sophie Turner, Cate Blanchett, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Andrew Scott and Piers Morgan.

Swift also made a few pointed comments about the pitfalls of playing live (during the 10 minute-long All Too Well, she stopped for a few seconds, saying “I swallowed a bug, can you sing?”), and the talents of her extensive live band, seemingly in response to disparaging comments made by Dave Grohl in London the day before. At a Foo Fighters gig at the London Stadium, Grohl warned the crowd “Be nice! You don’t want the Swifties after you” before suggesting Swift doesn’t sing live at her live shows.

Dublin: Night One

Swift was welcomed to Dublin with a bunch of flowers from her old friends – and “Irish fan club” – U2. “Already feeling that Irish hospitality!!” she posted on Instagram. She paid tribute to the “folklore” of Ireland and there were Irish references sprinkled throughout the evening, from a “haon, dó, trí, ceathair” countdown in I Can Do It With a Broken Heart to costume changes in the colours of the Irish flag. Paramore singer Hayley Williams also wore a Cranberries t-shirt for her support set.

Dublin: Night Two

Graham Norton showed up at the second Dublin date, with the presenter writing on Instagram that the show was “off the scale fabulous” and calling Swift a “class act in every way”. We wonder if he’s gunning for another appearance from Swift on his famous red sofa back in London; after all, she’s featured many times over the years. In August, ahead of the final Wembley shows, perhaps?

Dublin: Night Three

With Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks (who is currently on her own tour) watching on, Swift performed Clara Bow from The Tortured Poets Department for the first time. Introducing the song, which includes the lyric “You look like Stevie Nicks”, Swift said: “The reason I want to play this tonight is because a friend of mine is here who is watching the show and who has really been one of the reasons why I or any female artist gets to do what we get to do. She’s paved the way for us. And she’s mentored so many artists. I can’t tell you how rare that is. She’s a hero of mine and also someone that I can tell her any secret and she would never tell anybody. She’s really helped me through so much over the years.” Then, Swift sang You’re On Your Own Kid in full, a song Nicks previously said helped her to process the death of her bandmate, Christine McVie. Nicks was seen wiping away tears from the VIP tent during the performance. Hollywood actress Julia Roberts was also in attendance.

Potential special guests

Swift has brought a number of famous guests on stage to sing with her throughout the Eras tour – typically artists with feature credits on her songs. The National’s Aaron Dessner, who produced much of her lockdown albums Folklore and Evermore, appeared in Santa Clara, California, to perform melodic break-up ballad Right Where You Left Me. The National are in Europe throughout the summer for festivals, so he could make a surprise appearance again.

Then there’s sister-indie trio HAIM, who are personal close friends with Swift and featured on No Body, No Crime. Pictures of them out for a meal in London with Swift (and other famous faces, including Kate Moss, Lena Dunham and Andrew Scott) suggest they could make an appearance.

Other potential secret guests range from Lana Del Rey (who sang on Snow on the Beach, and is in the UK in August for Reading and Leeds festivals), Ed Sheeran (Everything Has Changed), Jack Antonoff (Getaway Car and more) and Zayn Malik (I Don’t Wanna Live Forever). All are probable, since Swift already brought out Paramore’s Hayley Williams for their collaboration, Castles Crumbling, and Gracie Abrams (for Us).

The secrets to look out for – and what they all mean

Ask any Taylor Swift fan what the secret to her colossal success is, and you might be surprised by their answer. Her emotionally vulnerable lyrics and 11 chart-topping studio albums come into play, of course, but it’s her Easter eggs – the secret clues she hides in her songs – that have established her as an unprecedented force in the music industry. And she’s done the same with the Eras concert, filling it with clues, tips and tricks hidden behind certain stages, lyrics or costumes that throw light on her life, her passions and her songs. Here we interpret it all for you.

The show opens with Lover – to mark Taylor’s creative rebirth …

Released in 2019, Swift’s seventh studio album was meant to get the full bells and whistles treatment: chart-topping singles (Me!, You Need to Calm Down, Lover and The Man) and a sold-out tour (“Lover Fest” was supposed to be a worldwide phenomenon, that included a show at London’s BST Hyde Park). Lover was also intended to mark a creative rebirth for Swift, whose popularity had waned following public spats with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian (that resulted in 2017’s Reputation).

Instead, Covid arrived, the tour was cancelled, and some of the singles flopped (although the album did feature Cruel Summer, surprisingly now her biggest, most-streamed hit). Swift had multiple reasons to open the Eras tour with the Lover section, and track Miss Americana and the Heartbreak Prince. The album was her first record to be entirely hers – following her legal battle with former record label Big Red Machine, that has seen her rerecord much of her back catalogue – and it never got its glory days because of the pandemic, so she seems to be picking up where she left off.

Some fans have even construed the choice to be aimed at former boyfriend Joe Alwyn, who she reportedly broke up with in March 2023 (the same month the Eras tour kicked off in the US), with Swift the all-American golden girl and he, the brooding British actor, the prince who wound up breaking her heart.

… Then the house burns down

For much of the Lover section, Swift performs on stage in front of a huge glass house with rooms nodding at previous music videos or Eras. As the titular track ends and she prepares to move into the Fearless era, the house bursts into fake flames and looks like it is burning down on stage. Could it symbolise the breakdown of her relationship with Alwyn, an end to her romantic side, or a potential hiatus post-Eras tour?

The Fearless dance

Nostalgia forms the heart of the Eras tour. Over two decades, Swift has released 11 studio albums packed with hits – from Love Story to We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together – and made billions of dollars from her music. The tour itself is a celebration of this (as Swift announces at the beginning: “We are about to go on a little adventure together”), as well as her old and new fans. The second part of the show is dedicated to 2008’s country gem Fearless – which won her first Grammy for Album of the Year – and features multiple nods to her younger years and earlier performances, including the jump and spin dance and heart sign she makes with her hands during the title song.

The meaningful outfits

Colours are important in Taylor Swift’s World, because each album is colour-coded (gold for Fearless, purple for Speak Now, black for Reputation, etc). Those signifiers form the heart of many fans’ chosen outfits for the tour, but also Swift’s own style choices on stage. When she announced 1989 (Taylor’s Version) in Los Angeles on August 9, she swapped her usual outfits for blue variants (1989’s colour) throughout the show. The show’s newest Era, dedicated to 11th album The Tortured Poets Department, sees her wear a toned-down spin on a circus ringmaster outfit for I Can Do It With a Broken Heart (a knowing nod to her 2012 MTV Europe Music Awards outfit) – a song about powering through heartbreak to dazzle fans and critics – while the logo on the t-shirt she wears during 22 (from Red) changes depending on the show.

One particular outfit to keep an eye on is the black and red, snake-emblazoned sequin catsuit she wears during the Reputation era – because it’s the only outfit that hasn’t changed since the beginning of the tour.

I Can Do It With a Broken Heart – and the Reputation glass boxes

ICDIWABH, mentioned above, is a defiant, gloriously poppy middle finger-up to anyone who thought Swift would buckle under the pressure of heartbreak and fame. “They said, “Babe, you gotta fake it ‘til you make it” and I did,” she sings. “Lights, camera, bitch smile, even when you wanna die”. The staging itself involves a motionless Swift, lying on the ground after performing The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, being picked up by two grinning circus masters, who strip her dress and replace it with the ringmaster outfit. After flopping and falling around like a ragdoll, Swift suddenly jerks to life and bursts into song – a true professional, at whatever personal cost.

During the Reputation section, meanwhile, and in particular Look What You Made Me Do, Swift performs in front of a collection of glass boxes containing dancers dressed in similar costumes to ones worn throughout her career. The song itself, which was originally aimed at West and Kardashian, is Swift’s way of standing up for herself in front of an industry who expected her to be the meek, good-girl country star, instead of a powerful woman. Taken together, the imagery of both songs (ICDIWABH and LWYMMD) supports this – Swift seeing herself as someone who hasn’t been allowed to grow up, whose entire adolescence (and now, adulthood) was catered to pleasing the public.

Taken from her fourth studio album, 2012’s Red, 22 marked a musical switch for Swift from country to pure pop. During her performance of the song at the Eras tour, she storms down the long stage with her crew of backing dancers to reach one lucky fan at the other end, who is handed the black (personally signed) trilby she wears during the performance (and wore in the original video).

Fans looking to secure the hat would be best to direct their attention to the Taylor Nation social media accounts – allegedly run by a combination of 13 Management, her mother Andrea and father Scott – who personally choose the recipient. One such lucky fan was the late basketball player’s Kobe Bryant’s young daughter, Bianka, who was handed the hat (and embraced) by Swift in Los Angeles.

The Folklore house

Between the pop-tastic anthems of Red and 1989, Swift brings down the tempo for the Folklore section (twinned with Evermore on the European leg). The album, which she wrote and released during the pandemic, was a critical darling; co-written with and produced by The National’s Aaron Dessner, it marked a switch from pop to a more indie, mature sound. During the set, she performs songs from Folklore and Evermore from atop a grassy woodland cabin (inspired by her 2021 Grammy performance) that is also home to the moss-covered piano where she sits and performs Champagne Problems.

So High School’s ode to Travis Kelce

When Swift began the Eras tour, she was newly single and heartbroken, tearing up on stage while performing for songs she had written in honour of former beau Joe Alwyn. Since then, she’s released The Tortured Poets Department, another break-up album widely interpreted to be about Matty Healy, the 1975 frontman who she dated afterwards.

But her current boyfriend, the NFL star Travis Kelce, has no reason to fear, because he gets his love story during So High School. Swift only sings part of the song, which is about her falling head over heels for this teenage-kind of love (and includes the line “You know how to ball / I know Aristotle”), but the accompanying dance is the clearest nod to Kelce. She and her backing dancers sit atop makeshift bleachers and “swag surf” – a waving motion typically used at US sporting events, that she was seen doing during a Kansas City Chiefs game earlier this year.

The Bejeweled TikTok dance

It’s easy to attribute the unprecedented success of the Eras tour to the rise of TikTok. The day after the tour began in Arizona in March 2023, I had seen it in its entirety – from my bedroom in London – thanks to people live-streaming from the concert, or uploading multiple videos. Since then, of course, there has been the blockbuster concert film, but the video sharing platform offered the first opportunity for international fans (or those who couldn’t afford tickets) to see the show.

TikTok even provided Swift with a free choreographer. New Jersey-based creator Mikael Arellano went viral in 2022 with his dance to Bejeweled, the ninth track from Midnights, where he shimmies and shakes his hands and body to the chorus. It racked up billions of views and sure enough, when the Eras tour opened, Swift and her dancers did the same dance. As a way of saying thank you, Arellano was even called up to accept the much-fêted 22 hat in May 2023.

Mandatory Credit: Photo by Tolga Akmen/Lnp/REX/Shutterstock (5691972f) Commuters wait for a Piccadilly line train at King's Cross Underground station London Underground Tube, Britain - 23 May 2016 The long-awaited 24-hour weekend service is officially announced to begin on 19 August 2016 on the Central and Victoria lines, with the Piccadilly, Jubilee and Northern to follow in the autumn.

Passengers in central London are faced with major delays after disruption on the Piccadilly line on the Underground .

Piccadilly line has severe delays between Acton Town and Uxbridge, and minor delays between Acton Town and Heathrow Terminals, the latest TfL status update shows.

This is due to an earlier faulty train at Russel Square.

Elsewhere, the District line remains suspended between High Street Kensington and Edgware Road since yesterday, while Jubilee, Metropolitan and Victoria lines and the Overground had minor delays.

London transport networks will be busy over the coming days as Taylor Swift fans head to the megastar’s Eras tour concerts at Wembley Stadium.

London Underground update

The Piccadilly line was hit by severe delays this evening after a broken down train in central London.

This has now been downgraded to minor delays between Acton Town and Uxbridge due to the earlier faulty train at Russel Square.

Trains between Acton Town and Heathrow Terminals were affected, but this has been cleared.

Here is what travel looks like on the rest of the TfL network.

  • Central line – Minor delays between Leytonstone and Hainault due to train cancellations
  • District – No service between High Street Kensington and Edgware Road due to a points failure at High Street Kensington since yesterday
  • Jubilee line – Minor delays due to train cancellations
  • London Overground – Minor delays between Stratford and Richmond / Clapham Junction due to an earlier overhead wire problems at Camden Road
  • Victoria line – Minor delays due to an earlier customer incident

More disruption on the District line

The Underground District line has been hit by further disruption today.

There is no service between Upminster and Upminster Bridge westbound only due to a fire alert at Upminster.

Elsewhere on the District line, a points failure in Kensington means there has been no service between High Street Kensington and Edgware Road since yesterday.

Update after King’s Cross evacuation

The fire service has confirmed that the station did not have a fire incident.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson told Metro.co.uk: ‘We were called at 1542 today (15 August) to a report that the fire alarm had been activated at Kings Cross Underground Station.

‘Firefighters attended and following investigation, established there was no fire. Three fire engines attended the scene.’

Fire engine seen outside of St Pancras station

Witnesses at the scene have published footage from the scene of St Pancras station where a fire engine is seen waiting outside of the station.

Other commuters have posted pictures of people rushing out of the station.

The station evacuation comes as Taylor Swift fans descend on the capital ahead of her three shows in London this weekend.

Fans have been posting messages on X warning each other of the incident.

London’s King’s Cross Station evacuated due to fire alert

King’s Cross St Pancras station in London has been evacuated due to a a fire alert.

Limited details have been given so far but London’s transport network Transport for London has posted on X that people are being urged to leave the station immediately due to the alert.

In a post on X, TfL Access said: ‘King’s Cross St. Pancras station – This is Closed due to a fire alert.’

Disruption on the London Overground

Passengers have been warned of delays and cancellations on the London Overground after a problem with the overhead wires.

There is no service between South Acton and Richmond, and the rest of the line has severe delays, the latest TfL status update shows.

Trains could be cancelled or delayed by up to 30 minutes, and disruption is expected until 4.30pm, National Rail says.

Thousands of fare dodging fines to be cancelled

More than 74,000 passengers who were fined and prosecuted for fare dodging are set to get a refund.

It comes after four train companies used a controversial single justice procedure (SJP) to privately prosecute fare dodgers – despite not being allowed to use it.

Now the operators – including Northern Rail and Greater Anglia – could face paying out millions of pounds to those who received a notice in the mail saying they have been fined and prosecuted and were given the option to plead guilty or not guilty.

But Judge Paul Goldspring, the Chief Magistrate at Westminster Magistrates Court, said in June the convictions were ‘probably unlawful.’

Even the lawyers for rail companies told a hearing last month they were ‘in agreement’ that the prosecutions should be thrown out.

Judge Goldspring said today today that six test cases should be declared ‘void,’ adding that thousands of other cases would be dealt with in the same way over the coming monts.

While the two other train companies have not yet been publicly named, the judge said the courts service, the Department for Transport and the train operators would start work to identify the affected passengers.

He also said that ‘a team will be put in place to begin the work of recovering the money paid and refund the money to individuals’ by November.

‘There are discussions ongoing with all the parties about how that may be paid,’ he added.

Neither the amount of money to be refunded nor the number of people affected has been confirmed, but Judge Goldspring said ‘over 74,000’ people is a ‘best guess at the moment.’

‘It was terrifying’

Sarah Cook, a pet shop owner from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, was fined £475 under the SJP system after she failed to pay a £20 fine for travelling without a ticket between Wombwell and Barnsley in November 2022.

The 42-yar-old said she had been waiting to hear back for a year on an appeal against the original fine.

But instead, she was told she had been prosecuted.

Her case was one of the six test cases.

For her, the train companies admitting that her prosecution was wrong after fining her was ‘a kick in the teeth,’ she said, adding that it puts ‘a massive no-go’ on travelling on trains.

Sarah said: ‘It’s a kick in the teeth. I know some people would say take the win, sit back, appreciate that. For me, although money at the time was an issue, for me more than the money was the stress.

‘I have not got a criminal record, I’m not somebody out there committing crimes, and for somebody to say you could have a criminal record, you could potentially face jail time if you have been a repeat offender, to me that was terrifying.’

She said that a ‘we’re sorry’ wasn’t enough for putting ‘75,000 people under the pressure of going to court, having to fill out multiple documents, potentially being threatened with larger fines and criminal records.’

Tortoise spotted on tracks in Southend

Is anyone missing a tortoise?

This little guy was found crawling on the train tracks, but is now waiting with ticket office staff until his owner claims him.

But he doesn’t seem stressed – in fact, he seems to be enjoying his stay in the station, where he was filmed munching on cucumbers.

Stansted Airport passengers with type 1 diabetes treated ‘as criminals’

Children and adults with type 1 diabetes have revealed they felt ‘bullied’ at Stansted Airport after being searched and ‘treated like criminals’.

One woman said when she travelled with her autistic son, 15, they were ‘bullied’ into walking him through the x-ray machine, despite her son wearing an insulin pump at the time.

April told the BBC her son was searched in a separate room and has told his mum he ‘doesn’t want to fly again’.

The airport said in a statement: ‘Passengers always have a right to opt out of a body scanner for medical or non-medical reasons, and have a hand search in private instead.

‘If there was any miscommunication at the time, we are very sorry for that and any distress or confusion this may have caused, and wholeheartedly apologise.’

Firefighters urge people to avoid Bromley town centre as fire blazes

The London Fire Brigade has warned locals from heading to Bromley town centre as they attempt to bring a fire under control.

There are currently no road closures but there is ‘heavy congestion’ on Westmoreland Road as fire fighters attempt to fight the blaze in a block of flats.

Services between Manchester Piccadilly and Sheffield to see disruption until end of the month

Due to ongoing repairs to the track between New Mills Central and Chinley, the route between Manchester and Sheffield will be affected until the end of the month.

National Rail said: ‘Trains may be cancelled, diverted or replaced by buses for part of the journey.’

Traffic delays in North London

For commuters heading into the capital by car, traffic is moving slowly in Barnet and Ealing.

The A40 and A406 are seeing moderate delays due to TfL works, with traffic reduced to one lane through Hanger Lane Tunnel.

In Barnet, drivers are seeing serious delays due to a burst water main at the westbound junction of the A41 at Brent Cross Roundabout – lanes one and two are closed (below Brent Cross Interchange).

Northern line now part suspended with severe delays

There’s now been a points failure at Euston which is causing problems on the Northern line.

Currently there is no service from Kennington to Camden northbound via Bank.

Trains from Morden to Kennington are also severely delayed after a person fell ill on a train earlier this morning.

The essential guide to visiting London

Here’s what you need to know about England's capital city—when to go, where to stay, what to do, and how to get around.

Tower Bridge at sunset with view on the Shard in London.

Why you should visit London

Architectural landmarks such as the   Tower of London ,   Westminster Cathedral , and   Kensington Palace , as well as revived modern buildings like   Tate Modern   and the   Battersea Power Station . Some of the finest theaters in the world, from the   Old Vic   to the rebuilt   Globe . Brown ale, fish’n’chips and weekend markets from Greenwich to Camden.

Best time to visit London

Spring : The Gulf Stream warms up the city early. Flowers start blooming in February and trees follow with their blossoms in March. The   Chelsea Flower Show   is a major draw in May.

Summer : The tourist season peaks between mid-July and late August. Music festivals play out in   Somerset House ,   Hyde Park , and   Victoria Park .

Autumn : Fall kicks off with the   London Design Festival , and the weather stays temperate into late October. Halloween is gaining importance throughout the city, though Guy Fawkes Night—a festival of fireworks and bonfires on November 5 – is more widely celebrated.   Battersea Park , by the Thames, has a great display.

Winter :   Shopping streets   switch on their festive lights in early December. While some cultural life slows down during the dark, wet winter months,   Kew Gardens   launches its winter fair and skating rink. And Hyde Park hosts a   Winter Wonderland .

Lay of the land

The Thames River, lined with grand public architecture like   St Paul’s Cathedral , the   London Eye ,   and Westminster (the seat of government), divides the city into north and south. The oldest enclaves lie to the east, around the   City of London , the old financial center also known as the “square mile.” Cultural energy revolves around   Soho ,   Covent Garden ,   Mayfair , Bloomsbury, and the   South Bank , a riverfront strip of modernist theaters and galleries.

Historically, wealthy residents settled in West London communities like   Belgravia , Kensington, and Chelsea, gravitating to Holland Park and Notting Hill. The picturesque Georgian streets around   Hampstead Heath   have always been popular among literary types, with nature-lovers hiking up   Parliament Hill   for the city view. The neighborhood becomes more fashionable as you descend toward   Primrose Hill , with its pastel-colored townhouses and ivy-clad pub gardens.

Younger Londoners congregate in East London, in gentrifying working-class neighborhoods like Dalston and Clapton. Postindustrial Hackney Wick has reinvented itself as a hub for live music, clubs, and inventive restaurants. Just over the River Lea is the former Olympic Park, a sports mecca that’s been rewilded and developed with museums and restaurants.

( 11 must-do experiences in London. )

Getting around London

By public transport:   The   London Underground , or Tube, is an extensive subway network that reaches from Heathrow Airport in the west, to Greenwich, the Olympic Park, and northern suburbs. The system incorporates an above-ground network called the Overground, and the new inter-city Elizabeth Line. Fares start at £2.70 ($3.50) and rise according to distance.   London buses   follow more winding routes between neighborhoods and start at £1.75 ($2.25) with a daily cap at £5.25 ($6.75). Seniors and students 11 and over are eligible for discounts. Children 10 and under travel free. Riders can pay with any contactless card or device, but cash is no longer accepted.

By train:   Trains beyond London are found at larger stations like Paddington, Euston, Liverpool Street, London Bridge, Victoria, and Charing Cross. Riders must purchase tickets ahead of travel at the station or with an app like   Trainline .

By taxi:   London’s famous   black cabs   can be hailed on the street or booked in advance. Typical fares start at about £7.60 ($9.75) for a mile-long journey. Minicabs, or privately run taxi services, can be booked in advance or hired from a licensed purveyor, found on most main streets. Uber operates throughout the city.

By boat:   The   Thames Clipper   boat service, now operated by Uber, runs along the Thames between Putney, in southwest London, and Barking, in the east, stopping at Battersea, Westminster, Tate Modern, Tower Bridge, Greenwich, and other piers. Prices start at £5.60 ($7.20) one way, with discounts for children and families. Riders can pay with a contactless card or with the Uber app.

( Going underground: a subterranean tour of London's abandoned tube stations. )

By bike:   Transport for London operates the   Santander bikeshare program , with bike docks in place across the city. A day-pass costs £3 ($3.85) for unlimited 30-minute rides; payment can be made through the   app   or at a docking terminal.   Lime operates an e-bike- and scooter-share program. Vehicles are GPS-equipped and located via the   app ; prices vary.

By car:   Only confident drivers familiar with England’s road laws should operate a private car in London. There is a daily £15 ($19.25)   Congestion Charge   in effect for most areas of central London, which must be paid on the day of travel. New   emissions rules   impose additional fees on non-compliant motor vehicles, and “ultra-low-emission zones”   (ULEZ)   make it tricky to enter some neighborhoods during the day.

By foot:   London neighborhoods are highly walkable, but the distance between them can be vast. Most roads have sidewalks that are well populated into the night. Always look both ways before crossing, even at a green light. Traffic normally comes from the right.

Know before you go

Diversity:   London is one of the world’s most ethnically diverse cities, with 37 percent of residents born outside London—many from South Asia, West and East Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean. Hundreds of languages are spoken here, and most neighborhoods have a mix of residents.

LGBTQ+:   The most recent   Open For Business index   gave London a top AAA rating as a “stalwart supporter” of LGBTQ+ inclusion and equality, and its universities rank highly among gay students. Soho is, historically, the LGBTQ+ hub of the city, though gay bars pop up in several neighborhoods, notably in East London and Lambeth.

What to read and watch

The most fascinating London-based books and films transport the reader to a specific neighborhood and historical period and focus on its rich diversity.

Oliver Twist , by Charles Dickens. Tragic, romantic, and surprisingly funny, this classic exposed the underbelly of Victorian London and prevails on high school reading lists everywhere.

Bridget Jones’s Diary , by Helen Fielding. The titular Jones is a sad, sardonic, desperately funny 20-something single woman working for a London publisher. The book centers on West London while the film adaptation transports most scenes to the southeast. Both will get you in the mood to explore.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes , by Arthur Conan Doyle. The book series and the companion TV show Sherlock take place around Baker Street in central London but investigate further afield into Piccadilly, New Scotland Yard, and the Tower of London

London: The Biography , by Peter Ackroyd. Possibly the greatest contemporary history of the city, the weighty tome reaches back with wisdom and wit through Victorian London to the Plague and the Great Fire.

Brick Lane , by Monica Ali. This instant classic, published just after the millennium, is an evocative peek into the lives of Bangladeshi immigrants in East London, based firmly in reality.

Notting Hill , written by Richard Curtis of Four Weddings and a Funeral (and others), this 1990s hit comedy capitalized on the vulnerable charm of Hugh Grant—and the undeniable charm of bohemian London—and inspired generations of tourists to seek out that blue door.

Rye Lane . Set around the eponymous market in Peckham, South London, this post-Covid romance begins with a meet-cute in   an   gender-neutral   bathroom.

My Beautiful Launderette . An enduring favorite that introduced a young Daniel Day-Lewis to the world, this romance by Hanif Kureishi was set in South London during the Thatcher years and emerged as one of the first “queer fairytales” to reach a wide audience.

Britain’s Violent Riots: What We Know

Officials had braced for more unrest on Wednesday, but the night’s anti-immigration protests were smaller, with counterprotesters dominating the streets instead.

  • Share full article

A handful of protesters, two in masks, face a group of riot police officers with shields. In the background are a crowd, a fire and smoke in the air.

By Lynsey Chutel

After days of violent rioting set off by disinformation around a deadly stabbing rampage, the authorities in Britain had been bracing for more unrest on Wednesday. But by nightfall, large-scale anti-immigration demonstrations had not materialized, and only a few arrests had been made nationwide.

Instead, streets in cities across the country were filled with thousands of antiracism protesters, including in Liverpool, where by late evening, the counterdemonstration had taken on an almost celebratory tone.

Over the weekend, the anti-immigration protests, organized by far-right groups, had devolved into violence in more than a dozen towns and cities. And with messages on social media calling for wider protests and counterprotests on Wednesday, the British authorities were on high alert.

With tensions running high, Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s cabinet held emergency meetings to discuss what has become the first crisis of his recently elected government. Some 6,000 specialist public-order police officers were mobilized nationwide to respond to any disorder, and the authorities in several cities and towns stepped up patrols.

Wednesday was not trouble-free, however.

In Bristol, the police said there was one arrest after a brick was thrown at a police vehicle and a bottle was thrown. In the southern city of Portsmouth, police officers dispersed a small group of anti-immigration protesters who had blocked a roadway. And in Belfast, Northern Ireland, where there have been at least four nights of unrest, disorder continued, and the police service said it would bring in additional officers.

But overall, many expressed relief that the fears of wide-scale violence had not been realized.

Here’s what we know about the turmoil in Britain.

Where has the unrest taken place?

Protesters over the weekend took to the streets of a dozen cities across Britain, most of them in England. Trouble broke out from Aldershot in the south to Sunderland in the north and Liverpool in the west. Belfast, in Northern Ireland, was also drawn into the fray.

In some cases, the protesters were merely unruly, but in others the violence was more pronounced.

Where arrests have been reported

On Sunday, rioters set upon a hotel that was housing asylum seekers in the town of Rotherham, in northern England, breaking windows before surging inside as the police struggled to control them. No guests were injured in the melee, the police said.

In Middlesbrough, a group of rioters, some masked, hurled bottles and rocks at officers. Cars were set on fire, and at least nine people were arrested. On Saturday, a library and a food bank were set ablaze in Liverpool as groups damaged and looted businesses, and in Hull, fires were set and storefronts smashed in the city center.

Dozens of police officers were injured, including some who required trips to the hospital.

What set off the protests?

The unrest began after a teenager wielding a knife attacked a children’s dance class early last week in the seaside town of Southport, which is near Liverpool. Three children were killed, and eight were wounded.

The suspect was born and raised in Britain, but online rumors soon circulated that he was an undocumented immigrant. To counter those false claims, the authorities took the unusual step of publicly identifying him. The BBC has reported that the suspect’s parents are from Rwanda. The police have not disclosed a motive for the stabbing attack.

But with migration a flashpoint issue in Britain, especially on the far right, the rumors were all it took to set off violence.

Extremist groups urged their followers to take to the streets, and on the day after the stabbings, they began to do so, starting in Southport.

How have the authorities responded?

The weekend riots prompted a heavy police response. Nearly 4,000 additional officers were deployed, a law enforcement association said. And a government order gave officers in some places special powers to disperse any gatherings or “antisocial behavior,” the police said in a statement .

More than 400 people have been arrested, and about 100 have been charged, Mr. Starmer said after an emergency cabinet meeting on Tuesday — the second in two days.

The prime minister, who has characterized the riots as “far-right thuggery,” encouraged prosecutors to name and shame those convicted to dissuade others from joining the violent rampages.

“I’m now expecting substantive sentencing before the end of the week,” Mr. Starmer said. “That should send a very powerful message to anybody involved, either directly or online, that you are likely to be dealt with within a week and that nobody, but nobody, should involve themselves in this disorder.”

BJ Harrington, the head of public order for Britain’s National Police Chiefs’ Council, said that online disinformation had been “a huge driver of this appalling violence.”

Intelligence teams, detectives and neighborhood officers, Mr. Harrington said, were working to identify the people fomenting the violence.

“They won’t win,” he said.

How are the authorities handling online incitement?

Social media has acted as an accelerant throughout the protests, with disinformation fueling far-right and anti-immigrant groups . Britain and other democracies have found that policing the internet is legally murky terrain, with individual rights and free speech protections balanced against a desire to block harmful material .

In his remarks on Tuesday, Mr. Starmer said that some arrests involved people accused of inciting violence online.

The first person to be convicted over online posts since the riots, according to the Crown Prosecution Service , was a 28-year-old man from Leeds who posted messages on Facebook about attacking a hotel that housed asylum seekers. It said that the man, Jordan Parlour, had pleaded guilty and been convicted of using threatening words or behavior to stir up racial hatred.

Mr. Starmer has called out social media companies over misinformation on their platforms, but holding them accountable could be tricky. Britain adopted a law last year that requires social media companies to introduce protections for child safety and to prevent and quickly remove illegal content like terrorism propaganda and revenge pornography. The law is less clear about how companies must treat misinformation and incendiary language.

What are the political implications?

The riots are the first political crisis for Mr. Starmer, who took office a month ago after his Labour Party defeated the Conservatives, who had been in government for 14 years.

While in power, the Conservatives tried to capitalize on public unhappiness over immigration, vowing to reduce it (though failing to do so). But in recent days they joined Labour in condemning the violent protests.

Former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, now the opposition leader, said the unrest had “nothing to do with the tragedy in Southport.” The police, he said, have “our full support to deal with these criminals swiftly.”
