Tour de Pologne 2023, the first rumours about the route of the 80th edition

Details of the first, second, fifth and seventh stages of the race that will be 95 years old this year, 30 of its editions have been organised by Lang Team.

Warsaw, 12th June 2023 – The 80th edition of the Tour de Pologne UCI WorldTour will be officially presented live on TVP Sport on June 19th. While we wait for the full route and its features to be revealed, here are some interesting facts and rumours about the race course.

“This year we have prepared a very unique route,” announces Tour de Pologne UCI WorldTour race director Czesław Lang. “We are moving the race from eastern to western Poland, where the Tour de Pologne has been held in previous years. We have planned challenging mountain stages in Lower Silesia and Silesia, and there will also be an individual time trial. This will be a unique edition of the race because in 2023 we will be celebrating three special moments: 95 years of the Tour de Pologne, the 80th edition of the race and 30 years of the Lang Team.“

The first stage of the 80th Tour de Pologne will start in Poznań, the largest city in Wielkopolska, founded in the 10th century. The entire stage will take place in this province, with a spectacular finish on the track of the Automobil Klub in Poznań, which, like the Polish race, will celebrate a special anniversary in 2023. This stage will be particularly suited to sprinters.

The second stage marks the race’s big return to Karpacz and the first opportunity for climbers in this edition. Karpacz, a mountain resort at the foot of the Karkonosze Mountains, has hosted the final day of the Tour de Pologne for many years. The route features climbs with gradients of up to 20%. It will be a very difficult stage with the finish line at the top of the Orlinek climb.

The fifth stage will be typically mountainous, with an elevation of over 3,000 metres. The finish is in Bielsko-Biała, where the race returns after a two-year break and where riders such as Richard Carapaz and Michał Kwiatkowski have already triumphed. Before reaching ‘Little Vienna’, as Bielsko-Biała is known, the riders will have to tackle several challenging climbs, including the mountain town of Istebna, where the intermediate sprint points are up for grabs.

The seventh stage will traditionally finish at Blonie Park in Krakow, a city with which a partnership until 2026 has been sealed.

All the details will be revealed in a week’s time at the official presentation of the seven-stage race, live on TVP Sport.

Profiles & Route Tour de Pologne 2023

Profiles . From the 30th of July to the 4th of August the Tour de Pologne will be on the road. Right after the Tour de France and right before the World Championships, the Polish race marks an important transition week in a packed section of the season.

The seven-day race features, as every year, opportunities for several riders. Regarding the overall classification it features two hilly days early on where small summit finishes will make small differences, a possible raiding day on stage 5, but the time-trial on stage 6 should be long enough to decide the GC. Sprinter wise stages 1, 4 and 7 will most likely be certain for the fast men to battle for, attracting enough of them to Poland ahead of the World Championships.

PREVIEW | Tour de Pologne 2023 - Top climbers and sprinters gather ahead of World Championships and Vuelta a Espana

Profiles & Route Tour de Pologne 2023

The biggest Polish race of the year begins with a pure day for the sprinters. Virtually no climbing in a route that starts and finishes in Poznan, it has 183.7 kilometers on the menu, quite a few intermediate sprints but eventually a bunch sprint seems to be inevitable.

The stage will end at the Tor Poznan, a racing circuit in the outskirts of the city. The riders enter the cicuit and cross the finish line for the first time with 4.5 kilometers to go. The next time coincides with the end of the stage.

In racing circuits as you know, the corners are not technical. It's a circuit made for speeds that the riders won't reach, so despite the several corner in the final kilometers, it's not a technical one. Nevertheless, there will be a slight right-hander with 300 meters to go which could prove decisive in the run-up to the sprint.

Profiles & Route Tour de Pologne 2023

Stage 2 in Pologne is a day of two very different halves. The 203 kilometers are mostly flat for the first two third of the day, but the race reaches it's southern border and the hilly terrain comes about. It may be the biggest chance to create differences ahead of the time-trial.

There are two categorized climbs in the lead up to the final ascent, they are 3.3 kilometers at 5.7% and 4.8 kilometers at 5.8% respectively. The latter one ends with 20 kilometers to go, all will be a warm-up to the final ascent to Karpacz.

The finish line is in the outskirts of town. It is an inconsistent one, 6.9Km at 5.2%, however there is a very different story when looking at the climb in detail. Inside town the riders find a 1.6Km section at 9.5% and the gradients go up to 15%, nasty ramps which can see explosive attacks and differences. There are a few flat bits, however it will be a difficult run to the line, one where both climbers and puncheurs can ride for the win.

PREVIEW | Tour de Pologne 2023 stage 2 - First summit finish to open up GC battle

Profiles & Route Tour de Pologne 2023

The third stage of the race will be a very difficult one. A classic Polish day of racing, and by that of course I am referring to the start and finishing locations which will be the biggest challenge for commentators on the day to pronounce! However riders find a hard day, 300 meters of climbing, a lot focused in the first kilometers. A punchy start and two categorized climbs can see a strong breakaway going up the road, however simultaneously it is very early in the race to see meaningful groups having the freedom to be formed.

The riders don't find much flat terrain however. Even after the two classified ascents (3.3Km at 7.2%; 7.7Km at 5.1%) there are two more ascents where in the peloton some will struggle. Then there will be some rest, but a climb will come closer to the finish where damage will be done. It's 4.5 kilometers long at 6%, again not a brutal one but it will thin down the field, it summits only with 16 kilometers to go - with the KOM sprint a bit later on, and a fast descent into the finishing climb.

With 2 kilometers to go the riders take two tricky corners, there will be a very very fast run-up to that spot, and then it begins to drag uphill. The attacks won't surge there however, but instead in the final 900 meters which average almost 9%. It's a pure anaerobic effort, the toughest gradients of 15% are from 700 to 400 meters to go, the differences can be made there, however one way or another this will suffocate the riders, and the run-up to the line will be a struggle to survive with whichever legs the riders have left.

PREVIEW | Tour de Pologne 2023 stage 3 - 15% climb to decide important GC day

Profiles & Route Tour de Pologne 2023

A pan-flat day on the fourth day of racing in Poland. There are 850 meters of ascending throughout the day with only a tiny hilltop early in the day to attribute KOM points. Most of the day however is simple in the eastern European plains.

The finale into Opole will be different from the past one, this one in an urban environment - also different from the final day. It will be fast, it will be trecherous. There will be a few smooth turns just before the 1 kilometer to go banner, and a sharp right corner with 500 meters to go. The finishing straight is perfectly straight and flat, ideal for the pure fast men.

PREVIEW | Tour de Pologne 2023 stage 4 - Merlier, Kooij, Gaviria and Bennett battle for meaningful sprint win

Profiles & Route Tour de Pologne 2023

Another 3000 meters of climbing on the fifth day of racing at the Tour de Pologne. The first 60 kilometers are mostly flat, but the stage into the traditional finale into Bielsko-Biala will have a very difficult middle part where a lot can happen. Whether it will or not depend on how the riders decide to play out, in the day before the time-trial and a circuit finish it can be argued that it is not the ideal set of conditions to be a GC day.

Five climbs with descents and virtually no flat roads inbetween. 3.8Km at 6.4%, 7Km at 4.3%, 2Km at 11.4%, 3.9Km at 5.7% and 6Km at 6.3%. They will summit with 125, 110, 92, 78 and 58 kilometers to go. Are they hard enough to create differences? Yes absolutely, specially one which averages 11% and team support matters little. It is terrain where raids and attacks can take place.

If it does, it will be a difficult stage finale with the GC likely to see more attacks on the final circuit. If not, a likely sprint will take place - with the possibility of a late attack succeeding. In Bielsko-Biala the riders will race through the final circuit four times, it ends with a 2.3-kilometer climb at 4%. The circuit is fairly small which lifts the question of what will happen if the race explodes early on and riders are lapped in the city.

PREVIEW | Tour de Pologne 2023 stage 5 - Bielsko-Biala circuit the final opportunities for climbers and puncheurs to explode GC

Profiles & Route Tour de Pologne 2023

The most likely decisive stage in this year's race could be the time-trial. Katowice hosts a different type of stage this year, a 16.8-kilometer challenge against the clock but one that promises differences and also an opportunity for the specialists- specially as it comes with one week to the time-trial World Championships.

The route is quite different than what you'd expect from a time-trial. It is mostly flat however technical. Early in the route there are good sections to put down the power, but then the last two third include quite a few sections with breaking and accelerations involved. Quite a few, definitely not a constant effort, it can mix things up on the day.

PREVIEW | Tour de Pologne 2023 stage 6 - Final time-trial to decide overall classification, battle between Mohoric, Almeida and Kwiatkowski

Profiles & Route Tour de Pologne 2023

The final day of racing, the Tour de Pologne reaches Krakow for the traditional finale. It's a day for the sprinters, nothing too complicated or terrain that will split the field up. A pure sprint stage in the making with teams saving their bullets for the final circuit.

Just outside the city center, the roads will be wide and not technical. Around a park, the riders will have a fast run-up to the finish, the final corner with 1.6 kilometers to go, and the final 800 meters completely straightforward.

PREVIEW | Tour de Pologne 2023 stage 7 - Merlier main favourite for final sprint as Mohoric and Almeida fight for GC win

Matej Mohorič (Bahrain-Victorious) nabbed the bonuses he needed on Friday’s final stage to ensure he beat João Almeida (UAE Emirates) to the overall at the Tour of Poland .

Mohorič won the GC at the Polish tour by just one second after a tense final stage into Kraków that saw the GC battle come down to bonus points.

Also read: Mohorič poised to win Tour of Poland by 74 hundredths of a second

Victory this week is the second time Mohorič secured stage-race victory based on primes . He pulled a similar feat last year when he usurped Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard to win the CRO Race on final-stage time bonuses.

Friday’s stage sees Mohorič close the curtain on a stellar opening phase of his summer. The 28-year-old won a stage at the Tour de France last month and backed it up with stage 2 victory and the overall this week in Poland.

Mohorič opted out of representing Slovenia at road worlds and will now take a break before he races the Benelux Tour at the end of August.

Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) won the bunch sprint Friday to deliver Quick-Step its third victory of the seven-day race, and the Belgian speedster his second of the week.

Friday’s 167km flat stage between Zabrze and Krakow saw a duel between Bahrain-Victorious and UAE Emirates as they vied to secure their leaders some crucial bonus points.

Mohorič and Almeida had started the stage separated by just fractions of a second, making the primes available at Friday’s two intermediate sprints and at the finish line potential race-winners.

Mohorič said after the stage Thursday he was confident he could outkick Almeida in the intermediates and proved himself right Friday.

The Bahrain-Victorious leader burst out of the bunch ahead of Almeida at the 65km sprint point to win a three-second advantage over his rival’s two, leaving him just one second ahead overall.

The day’s three-rider breakaway hoovered the prizes available at the 145km intermediate, leaving it all down to whether Almeida could serve a surprise GC coup at the finish line.

The day’s break was all scooped up inside the final 20km and Bahrain-Victorious mobbed to the front to protect Mohorič and prevent Almeida from moving.

A crash at 8km to go caused a ripple of confusion, and GC contender Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers) and UAE sprinter Pascal Ackermann were among the seven that came down.

The confusion wasn’t enough to prevent the predicted sprint finish however, and Merlier zipped to the line ahead of Arvid de Kleijn (Tudor Pro Cycling) and Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) for his second stage win of the Tour.

Almeida and Mohorič came to the line together, leaving the GC standings separated by just one second after more than 26 hours of racing.

Kwiatkowski was able to get back into the bunch before the 3km GC “safe zone” and finished on time with Almeida and Mohorič to protect third-place overall at his home Tour.

Almeida finished up second on GC for his third stage race podium of 2023. The rising Portuguese GC power also placed third at the recent Giro d’Italia.

Stage 6: Matej Mohorič clings to lead as Mattia Cattaneo powers to TT win

Tour of Poland

Mattia Cattaneo (Soudal Quick-Step) powered to victory in Thursday’s decisive time trial at the Tour of Poland.

The Italian blazed across all the time checks in first, and fended off some of the GC players to win for the first time in 2023.

Joâo Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) crossed the line second fastest, but that wasn’t enough to nudge him into the overall leader’s jersey in the 16.6km test against the clock.

“I am happy with my performance. It is always nice to win, but when you beat such a great field of riders it tastes even better,” Cattaneo said. “I’m over the moon. I’m working hard on these disciplines that I love.

“Thanks to this performance I’m now fifth in the GC. Unfortunately I lost 40 seconds on the first day. I’m getting older and it always takes a bit of time to get into the rhythm of the race, but I’m not complaining,” he said. “Today I’m happy to celebrate this victory. Now I am going to the world championships to compete in the ITT. I know my place in the peloton, so a top 10 would be a great result. I will give everything as usual and see what the result will be in the end.”

Overnight leader Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious) was 12 seconds slower than the Portuguese rider, but was just fast enough to retain the lead even though they are both now tied on time, with the Slovenian a fraction of a second faster.

“I had really good legs today, maybe I held back too much in the first part of the time trial. I should have pushed more. I made the same mistake in 2021 when I was fighting with Joâo for the overall,” he said. “In the second part, which was the hardest, I did my best and it was enough to retain the jersey. Now we have the same time, so tomorrow I have to make sure that he doesn’t get a bonus or that I get more than him.”

Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers) was third fastest on the day, with Brandon McNulty (UAE Team Emirates) riding to 10th. That bounced the Arizonan into sixth overall.

Stage 5: Reduced bunch sprint marred by crashes in finale

Tour of Poland

Marijn van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost) dashed to victory Wednesday  at the Tour of Poland at the end of a hectic stage that saw a TV motorcycle crash into fans with less than 5km to go.

Four people were transported to a local hospital, but none with serious injuries, officials said.

Riders saw the crash, and overnight leader Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious) said it distracted him from contesting for the win.

The front bunch slowed after the motorcycle incident, and there was discussion of neutralizing the stage. The speed kicked up again with about 2km to go as the bunch agreed to make the sprint, which provoked another pileup in the bunch.

The Dutch speedster out-paced Mohorič in the incident-marred finale. Joâo Almeida (UAE Team Emirates) crossed the line third as the GC favorites surged to the front in the climb-heavy stage.

“Yesterday went already pretty good, and I knew that today was going to be pretty hard,” Van den Berg said. “If I could survive the climbs, probably a lot of sprinters would be gone, so I would have a bigger chance, so I fought for it today, and in the end my sprint was good.”

Mohorič widened his lead to Almeida to 12 seconds, with Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers), fourth on the stage, retaining the third podium spot at 18 seconds back.

“In normal conditions I should do well tomorrow in the TT,” Almeida said. “Let’s see if I can take some time on Mohorič. I’ll try and do my best and bring my best legs. It’s going to be quite explosive as it’s short with plenty of corners so it’s going to be a tough one.”

Stage 4: Olav Kooij speeds to sprint win, Matej Mohorič retains GC lead

Tour of Poland

Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma) outkicked Marijn van den Berg (EF Education-EasyPost) and Matteo Moschetti (Q36.5) for sprint victory on stage 4 of the Tour of Poland.

The top of GC remains unchanged after a mostly uneventful stage Tuesday.

Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious) retains the overall lead, with UAE Emirates teammates João Almeida and Rafal Majka poised just 10 seconds back.

The hill-packed 5th stage Wednesday could see the classification reshuffle significantly, however.

OLAV KOOJI! 🔥 @JumboVismaRoad pic.twitter.com/S0CI3I1Wrd — Tour de Pologne (@Tour_de_Pologne) August 1, 2023

Stage 4 into Opole made for a template sprinter stage Tuesday.

Four riders made their move early in the day before Jumbo-Visma and Soudal Quick-Step monitored the gap for fast-finishers Kooij and Tim Merlier.

The last escapee, Patryk Stosz, was reeled in at 25km to go and Ineos Grenadiers took control, with Geraint Thomas doing a bunch of pulling to help protect his GC contender teammate Michal Kwiatkowski.

The bunch all zipped into the final showdown in Opole as one, and Jumbo-Visma mobbed to the front to deliver Kooij to an impressive seventh victory for the season.

Stage 3: Rafal Majka wins on home roads

Rafal Majka

Rafal Majka (UAE Team Emirates) kicked to victory in the third stage at the Tour of Poland.

The Polish rider edged overnight leader Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious) and compatriot Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers) to win the stage.

On a day which packed over 3000m of elevation, Majka stuck with the main group of favorites on the final climb on the day from Wałbrzych to Duszniki-Zdrój (162.3km).

“I’m so happy because I won the stage. Yesterday I missed 200 meters in the finish but today I found the extra push to make the difference and take the win,” Majka said. “We are here for GC for Joao Almeida but I also had the target of going for a stage win if the opportunity came up. Today it worked out perfectly and I’m very happy for all my team.”

With his first win of the season, Majka bounces into second overall, with Mohorič leading by 10 seconds heading into stage 4 from Strzelin to Opole (199.1km).

Stage 2: Matej Mohorič outsprints João Almeida for hilltop victory

Matej Mohorič (Bahrain-Victorious) outsprinted João Almeida (UAE Emirates) for the stage win and leader’s jersey on stage 2 of the Tour of Poland .

Time bonuses at the line put Mohorič four seconds ahead of Almeida on GC ahead of a series of three hilly / sprint stages to come.

Sunday’s mountaintop victory was Mohorič’s second win in just five race days after he claimed sensational victory in Poligny earlier this month on stage 19 of the Tour de France.

MATEJ MOHORIČ! @BHRVictorious pic.twitter.com/0d7KC39mrq — Tour de Pologne (@Tour_de_Pologne) July 30, 2023

The climb to the line in Karpacz dominated the stage Sunday.

At 11km long and with a series of 14+ percent ramps in the final 3km, the difficulty of the summit finish meant the GC teams cooled their jets through the opening of the 200km trek toward the southern border.

Three riders were let go early and given a sizeable gap but were inevitably all gobbled up by the bunch in the hill-packed final 30km of the stage.

Jayco-AlUla, UAE Emirates, and Ineos Grenadiers piled on in the base of the Karpacz climb as the GC contenders tussled for position.

Rafal Majka (UAE Emirates) attacked first, around 3km from the finish, and was soon joined out front by Lennert van Eetvelt (Lotto-Dstny).

However, a flurry of moves came out of the chase group and Majka and Van Eetvelt were reeled back within sight of the line, leaving Mojorič to outkick Almeida for victory.

Michal Kwiatkowski (Ineos Grenadiers) came in shortly afterward for third place.

Stage 1: Tim Merlier bosses big bunch sprint in Poznań

tour de pologne 2023

Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) won the opening stage and secured the first leader’s jersey of the Tour of Poland.

The Belgian speedster outsprinted Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma) and Fernando Gaviria (Movistar) after a hectic final of Saturday’s stage into Poznań.

A series of crashes on rain-slicked roads in the final 10km saw a handful of riders come down, but all the main sprinters got through safely before the Quick-Step train delivered Merlier to his seventh win of the season.

The pan-flat stage into Poznań played largely per the script Saturday.

A break of four went away in the opening kilometers and was given a slim gap before they were reeled in by the sprinter teams surprisingly early, some 55km from the line.

Rain poured through the final hour of the race, perhaps putting a stopper on attacks as the complete peloton rolled toward the final sprint.

Crashes disrupted the extra high-speed finale into Poznań – but there was no stopping Merlier, who didn’t make the Belgian selection for road worlds.

The Polish tour resumes Sunday, where a tough hilltop finish in Karpacz could see the main GC shake-up of the race.

Pre-race contenders like Geraint Thomas (Ineos Grenadiers), João Almeida (UAE Emirates), and Sergio Higuita (Bora-Hansgrohe) will be looking for early gains Sunday ahead of the series of hilly / sprinter stages that fall before the Tour’s second GC day, the stage 6 time trial.

Oprócz Niewiadomej, w Tour de France startowały cztery Polki: Karolina Kumięga (UAE Team ADQ) i Agnieszka Skalniak-Sójka (Canyon-SRAM) zajęły dalsze lokaty.

Visma-Lease a Bike rider beats Bennett, Pedersen

PRUDNIK POLAND AUGUST 15 Olav Kooij of The Netherlands and Team Team Visma Lease a Bike celebrates at finish line as stage winner during the 81st Tour de Pologne Stage 4 a 1953km stage from KudowaZdroj to Prudnik UCIWT on August 15 2024 in Prudnik Poland Photo by Luc ClaessenGetty Images

How it unfolded

Olav Kooij (Visma-Lease a Bike) timed his acceleration perfectly to the front of a bunch sprint and won stage 4 of the Tour de Pologne . Like a coiled spring, the Danish rider won a stage in Poland for a third consecutive year.

Mads Pedersen (Trek-Lidl) launched his move too early with less than 300 metres to go and was passed near the line by Kooij and second-placed Sam Bennett (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale). Pedersen settled for third.

The final 800 metres punched up a 3.7% hill and then deposited the sprinters through a left-hand curve for the final 500 metres. It was on the swooping bend that the Trek-Lidl rider surged from the pack, only to serve as a lead-out for Kooij.

"I was really happy to win here today and the team did a really good job to get me there," said Kooij. “After several hard stages, we knew there was a chance for me today. It was a nervous final, but I was perfectly placed going into the final kilometer. I'm happy I could finish it off for the team today.”

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) retained the overall lead finishing safely in the peloton with the same time as his victorious teammate. Visma kept their team leader out of danger when two crashes took down a dozen riders in the final 27km.

There were no changes to the top GC top five, Diego Ulissi (UAE Team Emirates) trailing Vingegaard by 19 seconds and Visma’s Wilco Kelderman another second back in third. Romain Grégoire (Groupama-FDJ) continued in fourth and Magnus Sheffield (Ineos Grenadiers) in fifth, the two 33 and 37 seconds, respectively, back.

With bonus seconds from intermediate sprints, Matej Mohoric (Bahrain-Victorious) moved past his teammate Edoardo Zambanini into sixth overall.

The longest stage of this year’s Tour de Pologne featured just classified climb, a category 2 at Przełęcz Jaworowa (7.2km at 4.2%)., with three opportunities for sprint points along the 195.3km route and bonus points at the finish in Prudnik.

One rider not taking the start in Kudowa-Zdrój was Max Schachmann (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), the team noting he was suffering from an upper respiratory infection.

The first flat stage after three days in the mountains did serve up some climbing across the first 80km. Across the Jawarowa Pass, Michał Paluta (Poland) took top points from a two-rider breakaway with Szymon Sajnok (Q36.5 Pro Cycling).

A Team Poland duo of Kacper Gieryk and Norbert Banaszek then attacked from the peloton, about 2 minutes back, for the chase. As they made the catch, Paluta dropped back, with 100km to go and the KOM points out of the way.

Bahrain Victorious pulled in the peloton while Gierkyk was the final rider to remain out front, 1:21 to his advantage with 70km to go.

The gap hovered at the one-minute mark across the next 20km, and he appeared to ease the pace, as Bahrain led the peloton with interest in the bonus points on offer at Otmuchów, 2 points going to Matej Mohorič.

With under 50km to go Gieryk faded back into the peloton as the WorldTour squads still hunting for a victory, Bahrain, Ineos Grenadiers and Team dsm-firmenich PostNL, gathered at the front next to Lidl-Trek.

It was steady and relaxed until 27km to go and five riders crashed on the side of the road, including Clément Davy (Groupama-FDJ) and climber Paluta. The final rider to pick himself and continue appeared to be Cameron Wurf (Ineos Grenadiers).

Then less than 7km later, more riders went down on both sides of the road, as a lone Arkéa-Samsic rider avoided the pileup navigating well off the pavement through a grassy ditch on the left side.

Several Alpecin-Deceuninck and Polish National Team riders were slow to get up, and the peloton pushed on with Soudal-QuickStep, Intermarché-Wanty, Lidl-Trek, Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale and Visma-Lease a Bike filling the width of the road with 20km to race.

Vingegaard was caught behind the crash but his Visma teammates brought him back into the peloton, as the still-steady pace did not change.

The ignition button for the stage wasn’t hit until 3km to go as the sprint teams positioned for the final uphill. Cofids went first after the 1km kite, then Lidl-Trek launched Mads Pedersen but it was Kooij who took charge at the end.
