Tata Safari Facelift safety features and tech detailed

- Gets ADAS with new features

- Safari has secured GNAP five-star rating

Tata Safari safety equipment summary

Global NCAP has announced a five-star rating for both the Tata Safari and Harrier, which is the highest score for adult and child occupant safety. The top-spec versions of the facelifted Safari are equipped with seven airbags, including frontal dual, driver knee, side curtain, and side chest airbags. The body shell integrity has been rated stable, as the SUV is equipped with seatbelt reminders, belt pre-tensioners, belt load-limiter, ISOFIX anchorages, and the aforementioned airbags. The optional ADAS technologies add to the convenience of the owners and will help take GNCAP’s ‘Safer Cars for India’ program a step ahead.

Facelifted Safari with added features for ADAS

Tata Motors joined the bandwagon of other manufacturers like MG , Mahindra , and Hyundai to offer ADAS on its flagship cars. The Safari now gets more ADAS features in addition to the ones introduced in February 2023. First, the facelifted SUV comes with autonomous braking instead of just a warning. As a result, the SUV can stop itself and effectively use adaptive cruise control too. It also gets lane assist instead of just a departure warning. However, if it detects the car is continuously deviating from its lane, this requires driver intervention after a while. Then, there are other features like forward and rear collision warning, blind-spot detection, door open alert, rear cross-traffic alert, high beam assist, and traffic sign recognition.

Engine and gearbox specifications of the 2023 Safari

The Safari continues to be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine with no petrol engine on offer. This Kyrotec mill produces 168bhp and 350Nm of torque and comes mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission.

Tata Safari, Harrier garner first-ever Bharat NCAP 5-star safety rating

The tata safari and the tata harrier scored a five-star safety rating at the global new car assessment programme (global ncap) as well..

Listen to Story

Tata Safari, Harrier Bharat NCAP 5 stars

The first set of crash test results under the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) are out with the Tata Safari and the Tata Harrier scoring a five-star safety rating. The two SUVs garnered five stars in both adult and child safety categories.

Launched in India in October 2023, the Tata Safari and the Tata Harrier secured a five-star safety rating at Global NCAP crash tests as well.

While the Tata Safari is priced between Rs 16.19 lakh and Rs 27.34 lakh (ex-showroom), the Tata Harrier sits in the price range of Rs 15.49 lakh to Rs 26.44 lakh (ex-showroom).

Both SUVs employ the same Kryotec 2.0-litre diesel engine, which develops 170PS of maximum power and 350Nm of peak torque. The engine can be paired either with a 6-speed MT or a 6-speed AT.

Congratulations to @TataMotors for the historic achievement! 💐 Presenting the first-ever Bharat - NCAP 5-star rating 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟certification to the new Safari and Harrier is a momentous stride in enhancing consumer safety. "Bharat NCAP is India's independent, atmanirbhar voice on vehicle safety . It is benchmarked to the best-in-class global standards and the Bharat NCAP vehicle rating system is designed to advance road safety and vehicle safety standards beyond mandatory regulations," Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said.

"I'm delighted that the first-ever vehicles being certified today with the highest achievable five-star rating, are both from Tata Motors. I congratulate them on award of this coveted certification with the highest possible ratings and for continuing to enrich their legacy of introducing the safest vehicles on Indian roads," he added.

  • Seatbelt reminder for all passengers
  • Isofix tethers

  • Reinforced cabin structure enhanced to provide symmetric crash performance and side pole impact

"Bharat NCAP is a significant step forward as it provides customers with a credible, objective score to evaluate the safety aspects of various vehicles. Informed customers taking optimal decisions will further foster the rising preference for safer vehicles in the country," said Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility.

"We acknowledge and appreciate the collaborative efforts of the government, regulatory bodies, and the automotive industry in this pursuit. At Tata Motors, safety is at the core of our DNA and we are honoured to win this maiden Bharat NCAP certification with an exemplary five-star rating for two of our vehicles. We remain committed and will continue to work towards improving vehicle safety holistically," he added.

Bharat NCAP is a voluntary programme and applies to the M1 category of vehicles with a gross weight of less than or equal to 3,500kg. The M1 category includes vehicles used for the carriage of passengers, comprising not more than eight seats, in addition to the driver's seat.

The programme requires testing of the base variant of any given model. Vehicles tested under Bharat NCAP are evaluated across three critical safety domains -- adult occupant protection, child occupant protection and safety assist technologies.

Tata Harrier and Safari receive 5-star safety rating in BNCAP test

The first crash test results from the Indian government's Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP) have been released, with both the Tata Harrier and Safari receiving five stars. Previously, both models were the highest-rated SUVs in the GNCAP safety testing. The flagship Tata SUVs have now been granted five-star ratings under India's new and independent safety performance evaluation criteria.

The Harrier and Safari facelifts are built on the OMEGARC architecture, which was developed from the D8 platform used by Land Rover. The SUV has seven airbags, ESC, ABS with EBD, VSM, HAC, HSC, hill hold control, three-point seatbelts, ISOFIX mounts, seatbelt retractor and pretensioners, a 360-degree surround camera, a blind-spot monitor, and Level 2 ADAS technology.

tata safari price safety rating

The Tata Safari costs between Rs 16.19 lakh and Rs 27.34 lakh (ex-showroom), while the Tata Harrier costs between Rs 15.49 lakh and Rs 26.44 lakh (ex-showroom).

Both SUVs have the same Kryotec 2.0-litre diesel engine, which produces 170PS and 350Nm of peak torque. The engine may be combined with either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Announcing this distinctive achievement, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Shri Nitin Gadkari ji, said, "Bharat-NCAP is India's independent, atmanirbhar voice on vehicle safety. It is benchmarked to the best-in-class global standards and the Bharat-NCAP vehicle rating system is designed to advance road safety and vehicle safety standards beyond mandatory regulations. I'm delighted that the first ever vehicles being certified today with the highest achievable 5-star rating, are both from Tata Motors. I congratulate them on award of this coveted certification with the highest possible ratings and for continuing to enrich their legacy of introducing the safest vehicles on Indian roads."

Tata Harrier and Safari Safer Choice

Global NCAP (GNCAP) has awarded the Tata Harrier and Safari SUVs with the Safer Choice awards, the highest accolade the crash testing organisation gives out to a vehicle, provided they meet a certain set of requirements.

The Harrier and Safari were crash tested by GNCAP in 2023  and both SUVs received a 5-star safety rating. Tata Motors, however, has since submitted the Safari and Harrier for further tests for compliance with Autonomous Emergency Breaking (AEB), speed assistance and blind-spot detection system requirements.

  • Harrier and Safari SUV receive Safer Choice award from GNCAP
  • Both SUVs have a 5-star rating for adult and child protection

GNCAP Safer Choice award requirements

As per GNCAP, the Safer Choice award is only given to vehicles that achieve the highest level of safety performance. So, apart from a 5-star safety rating for child and adult occupants, the vehicle also needs to be fitted with an AEB system (car to car as well as for vulnerable road users) and meet UN regulatory requirements.

It also needs to be fitted with a speed assistance system and achieve a full score in Global NCAP’s test criteria. Lastly, a blind spot detection system must be offered as a standalone option.

David Ward, president of the Towards Zero Foundation said, “Tata Motors’ continuing commitment to vehicle safety is very welcome and we are pleased to present the first of our new Safer Choice Awards to them for the Safari and Harrier.”

Tata Harrier, Safari crash test rating

In GNCAP’s crash test, the Harrier and Safari scored 33.05 out of 34 points for adult occupant protection and 45 points out of 49 in the child occupant protection, resulting in a 5-star rating for both. These were the highest scores achieved by any vehicle in a GNCAP crash test so far.

Global NCAP also noted that the body shell of both SUVs was ‘stable’ under impact, and was capable of withstanding further loadings.

Safety features on the Harrier and Safari include seven airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), a 360-degree camera with blind view monitoring, and ISOFIX child seat mounts. Top-spec variants also get an ADAS suite. Both SUVs have also been crash tested under the Bharat NCAP protocols , where again, they received an impressive 5-star rating.

Expert Review on Tata Safari

  • Solid Road Presence
  • Spacious And Comfortable Cabin
  • Well-Specced With A Host Of Features
  • Heavy Weight Is Quite Noticeable In Traffic
  • Automatic Gearbox Could Be More Responsive
  • Infotainment System Feels Not The Most Reliable

Like many Tata models the Safari also gets drive modes so you have City, Eco and Sport and yes there is perceptible difference between City and Sport for sure. But there is also a terrain response system a la Land Rover. Rough Road mode, Wet mode and then back to the default City drive mode.

Tata Safari

The Tata Safari carries the rich legacy of the original SUV that was a hit on Indian roads. The new Safari has been completely revamped and comes with more equipment and a whole new look and feel.

How’s the Design?

The Tata Safari has a front fascia that is almost similar to the Harrier. The split headlamp cluster is the same and there is a differentiated tri-arrow pattern for the front grille with chrome finishing. There is a third row of seats now and the roofline is also higher for the SUV along with a rear overhang which is longer. It also comes with a rear quarter glass that is full-sized and the tail-end is also very upright. The tail lights are different from the Harrier though. There are chunkier roof rails which are designed to indicate a stepped roof. The Safari is longer and taller while the wheelbase and width remain the same.

How does it perform?

The Tata Safari’s engine has high levels of refinement while there are Eco, City, and Sport driving modes. The engine offers a wide and punchy power band, while the Sport mode is the best for higher drivability. You can easily get the SUV up to higher speeds although there is some noise when you rev the engine hard. There are 6-speed manual and automatic transmission systems and the driving experience is also neat. The clutch is a little heavy if you are using the manual transmission unit. Slotting the gears will require a little more effort in turn. The automatic version comes with a unit from Hyundai and shifts smoothly engine. The Safari is responsive and agile enough.

How’s the mileage?

  • Diesel Manual- 16.14 kmpl
  • Diesel Automatic- 14.08 kmpl

How’s the driving experience?

The Tata Safari offers a mixed bag in terms of the driving experience and the ride. The steering feels heavier at lower speeds while higher speeds are not as comforting or balanced. However, the Safari is a good highway cruiser and offers more confidence and stability. The suspension system is more robust and is softer as well, leading to better absorption of bumps at lower speeds. The Safari can readily tackle bad roads, potholes and uneven stretches.

What’s the interior like?

The cabin is quite similar to the Harrier. The dashboard looks neat although the Oyster White interior theme is the stand-out feature here. There is also the electronic parking brake now. There is a great view from the driver’s seat with mostly high quality materials inside. The central console, however, may eat into the driver’s knee room. The 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit appears small inside the car. The quality of the rear view camera could also have been better. There is a lengthy feature list including the JBL audio system, panoramic sunroof, and the powered seat for the driver along with connected tech features. Wireless charging is unavailable though. The middle row has theatre-esque seating with a higher placement for the seats. Comfort is great and the overall experience is good enough, with the 60:40 sliding function. There is a Boss  mode for adjusting the co-driver’s seat from the back itself. The top-end variant also gets a six-seater configuration with captain’s seats in the middle. These come with great cushioning and comfort, while offering several adjustments and a folding armrest. The rear windows however skip sun blinds and USB slots are hard to find when you venture near the central tunnel. The third row is accessible with the one-touch fold and tumble mechanism. Once you are in position, the space is not that bad. Adults will find decent legroom and the big windows create an airy feeling with blower control and two USB charging slots as well.

Tech and infotainment

The Tata Safari comes with its 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment system with connected car and remote tracking functions, a reverse camera, panoramic sunroof, USB charging slots, JBL audio system, powered driver’s seat, and a lot more.

Safety equipment

The Tata Safari comes with six airbags along with ABS, EBD, ESC, traction control, and brake assist. There are other features including fog lamps, parking sensors, and hill-descent control.

Which variant to buy?

You may check out the XT option if you are on a tighter budget. The XMA is the value pick from all the variants, while if you are okay paying more, then the XZA or XZ variants are par for the course. The XE variant has decent equipment at the entry level including good safety features, projector headlamps, remote central locking, power outlets, and more. The XM trim comes with the automatic transmission option, a 7 inch touch screen infotainment unit, driving modes and more. The XT gets more premium features including TPMS, automatic wipers and headlamps, rear view camera, 18-inch alloy wheels, LE3D DRLs, iRA connectivity suite, ambient lighting, and a lot more. It comes only in the manual guise. The XT offers a panoramic sunroof for an extra amount. The XZ comes with an automatic transmission system and is a value offering with more airbags and safety features, the 8.8 inch touch screen infotainment unit, 7 inch semi-digital instrument console, terrain response modes, JBL audio system, Xenon headlamps, and more. The XZ+ and XZA+ take it up a notch with captain’s chairs and the sunroof but are costlier. The XZ+ Adventure is more popular with buyers due to its interior changes.

Which cars compete in the segment?

The Tata Safari takes on the Mahindra XUV500 and the MG Hector Plus in its segment. It is the tallest and widest of the lot, while the MG Hector is the longest here. The Hector Plus has the biggest boot space while the Safari has the lowest volume. The Safari and Hector Plus both have more powerful diesel engines in terms of output. However, the torque output is the highest for the XUV500’s diesel engine. The Safari manages to hold its own in terms of features, design, handling, performance, and interior space.

Verdict (Value for Money)

The Tata Safari offers a spacious and comfortable last row of seats along with a rugged and durable vibe. It offers good performance, a refined engine, and a long list of features. The SUV’s design is also a head-turner on the road. However, the driving dynamics and heavy steering could be minor hindrances. If you talk about a muscular and attractive three-row SUV with good performance, then the Tata Safari certainly makes a strong case for itself.

Tata Safari Price List (Variant Wise)

Tata Safari Ex-Showroom price ranges from ₹ 15.49 to 27.34 Lakh. Tata offers Safari in 29 variants. The top variant of Safari is Accomplished Plus 6S Dark AT and the base variant is Smart.

With its bold design, robust build, and comfortable interior, it has remained a popular choice among SUV enthusiasts. One of the standout features of the Tata Safari is its spacious and well-appointed interior. The Tata Safari interior has been revamped in the facelift, offering a more modern and luxurious feel. It now features a revised dashboard design with a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster. The Tata Safari facelift interior is designed to offer a premium experience, with each trim level providing unique interior finishes that set them apart. Whether you choose the Smart, Pure, Adventure, Fearless, or Accomplished variant, the attention to detail and quality materials ensure a refined atmosphere inside the cabin.

When it comes to pricing, the Tata Safari 2021 price in India starts from ₹16.19 lakh (ex-showroom) for the base model. The top model, which includes more advanced features and premium trims, is priced higher. The Tata Safari's top model price reflects the additional tech and luxury features packed into the SUV. The Tata Safari's on-road price varies depending on the location and the chosen variant, as it includes registration, insurance, and other charges.

The Tata Safari mileage is another aspect that appeals to buyers, balancing performance and fuel efficiency. The SUV is powered by a 2.0-liter diesel engine that delivers satisfactory mileage, making it suitable for both city driving and long road trips.

Tata Safari Storme and Tata Safari's old model hold a special place for those who follow the safari lineage. The Safari Storme was known for its rugged performance and off-road capabilities, while the older models laid the foundation for the SUV's reputation for reliability and durability. The new Safari builds on this legacy with modern advancements and improved features.

The Tata Safari XE variant offers a more affordable entry point into the Safari lineup, providing essential features and the same strong build quality as the higher trims. Additionally, the Tata Safari black edition is available for those who prefer a more striking and bold appearance.

Overall, the Tata Safari car is a versatile and reliable SUV that offers a compelling mix of comfort, technology, and performance. With the latest facelift, Tata Motors has ensured that the Safari continues to be a strong contender in the SUV segment, appealing to both long-time fans and new buyers looking for a robust and stylish vehicle.

Great SUV for long drives and family trips

By Madok Deepak @ Sep 19, 2024 04:38 PM

The new Tata Safari is powerful and spacious. The engine performance is great, especially with the automatic variant. There’s loads of boot space for all your luggage, and the safety features like airbags give a solid safety experience. Though it's on the pricier side, it’s a great SUV for long drives and family trips.

Spacious Powerful engine Good safety features but Average fuel efficiency

By Harish Jagtap @ Sep 22, 2024 07:59 PM

The Tata Safari is a powerful and spacious SUV that offers great safety features and comfort. The engine performance is impressive, and the boot space is more than sufficient for long trips. The suspension handles rough roads with ease, but the fuel efficiency could be better given the size of the vehicle. It’s a great option for those looking for a rugged yet comfortable SUV.

2000 km in 4 days with my new Tata Safari facelift: 10 Pros & 7 Cons

car

Had the Nexon EV Prime previously and currently own the Nexon EV Max, alongside the new Safari.

BHPian shashankw839 recently shared this with other enthusiasts.

I am also a fellow Safari Accomplished Plus owner. I have recently purchased the car. I have been a strong EV enthusiast but there are no options in 7-seater cars in EVs so decided to pick up the Safari. I have owned the Nexon EV Prime before but my experience was not good and also now have the Nexon EV Max which has certain niggles too and I am waiting for a proper resolution still. I have owned tons of cars from different brands so far but love to support our brands and want them to succeed. However, I must sadly say that the customer service approach from our local brands particularly Tata and Mahindra is not up to the mark for sure. I’ll list some pros and cons I found with my car after driving it for 2000 in 4 days recently.

Tata Safari facelift Pros:

  • The car is solidly built. The LR platform outshines on the highways. The car eats up the miles in comfort.
  • Seating comfort for 7 passengers is quite good. I have the 7 seater configuration and 6 adults and 1 kid could travel without feeling cramped for space. The last row is usable by adults too.
  • Cameras are crisp and clear in the daytime and are okay in the nighttime. The parking guidelines are accurate. The 360-degree camera and front and back sensors are a boon to handle the bulky size of the vehicle.
  • The JBL music system is simply awesome. It’s too good for the car at this price point. The infotainment screen is crisp and Android Auto and Apple carplay being wireless is a very good feature.
  • The car has ample charging sockets for all occupants. The utility part of the car is neatly done.
  • Seats are super comfortable for all occupants. Just the right amount of cushion and ergonomics for everyone. Seat ventilation is a bonus.
  • I am simply blown away by the suspension setup on the car. I have used luxury cars with 2x and 3x the price of the safari and they would also unsettle on some bad road conditions when driven with full load. However, the safari is rock solid on bad roads. The suspension setup is very impressive.
  • The electronic power steering is light to drive and does not cause any fatigue. The driving position is perfect for my liking and I could do almost 500+ kms a day on an avg for 4 days straight without getting tired.
  • The engine is very well refined and noise levels are well isolated from the cabin. A commendable job has been done to make the cabin experience smooth on the new version.
  • The engine is very efficient as well. At lower three-digit speeds constantly, I could extract 13-15 km/l mileage with a full load which is very good.

Tata Safari facelift Cons:

  • The legacy of cons remains and they need to be sorted by Tata ASAP for the product to succeed. The first and foremost is the fit and finish of the car. There are uneven panel gaps all over the cabin and on the exterior.
  • The paint finish is not up to the mark at all places on the car. The fitment of plastic parts in the interior is not correct in many parts of the car. This causes some rattles when travelling.
  • The biggest hit-and-miss is Adas functions. In 4 days of travel, I got ADAS sensor malfunction warnings around 6 times. Adaptive cruise control would become unavailable when the sensor used to go mad. Lane keep assist is not active and the lane departure warning is very late in responding. Collision assist also does not work well and is very late to warn even when sensitivity is set to the highest level. Overall ADAS calibration is not up to the mark. The only thing that I found working correctly was the rear cross-traffic alert.
  • The OE tyres provided with the cars are hard. The lower trims get Bridgestones while the top trim gets MRFs with an odd size. The size 245/55 R19 is very odd and if you end up damaging one of your tyres, it is very hard to find a tyre of this size easily. I have upgraded my tyres to Pirelli Pzeros and they have made a huge difference to the car and its handling.
  • There are hardly any accessories available for the car with TML. The floor mats they provided do not match and they say it might take some months for the mats to arrive. So the car gets dirty easily.
  • As I said the cons continue and so another big issue is the lack of knowledge of the model with TML technicians. I took the car 2 times to the dealership so far and both times did not have a great experience. First, it was for the number plate fitment and the person there started fitting the plate right in front of the Adas sensor and was not even aware that he was going to block the radar. Fortunately, another technician was available who could understand what I was saying and then repositioned the plate. The second time the fog light was making noise and was loose and the technician mentioned that the full bumper needed to be taken down while it was just a matter of removing one cover from the wheel arch.
  • The headlights on the car are not good at all for highway conditions. The throw is not bright enough and neither it is long enough. The spread is ok but the throw is hardly 150-200 feet even on a high beam. Tata needs to provide better headlights for sure for safety reasons. I had to drive very cautiously at night due to the bad headlights.

Overall, it is a great car and Tata has come a long way with its improvements, however, they need to solve the niggles and basic customer service issues asap to give the owners a better experience. The issues with ADAS need to be solved on priority because they are related to safety.

Tata Curvv drive review: Curvaceous challenger in crowded space

tata safari price safety rating

  • Unique styling
  • Large cargo area
  • Diesel engine with DCA
  • Feature rich
  • Quality issues in cabin
  • Stiff suspension
  • Tata Curvv is looking at throwing curveballs at well-established rivals in the mid-size SUV space in India. Can it strikeout the champions?

Tata Curvv

Are you in the market for a mid-size SUV? Are you bored of the same-old design of the options available? Do you want to stand out of the crowd? If yes, Tata Motors is gunning for your attention. Telemarketing scripts from yesteryear aside, the Tata Curvv is indeed vying for your undivided attention as it begins its all-new innings in the field of mid-size SUVs. And much like the Nexon and Nexon EV twins have combined to propel Tata Motors in the sub-compact SUV space, Curvv and Curvv EV are looking at a partnership which will hook, pull and cut out competition. We test drove the Tata Curvv EV but more recently, got our hands on the Curvv engine version as well.

Now the Curvv ICE or internal combustion engine version comes with two petrol and one diesel motor under the hood. Tata Motors appears determined to leave no powertrain unchecked and combined with the plethora of manual and automatic choices, has promised to pack a whole lot into its latest SUV offering. The new-age Indian car buyer is smart, knowledgeable and aware of latest trend, and to impress this bunch - to impress you, that is, it will indeed take a whole lot. Does the new Tata SUV then deliver on all - or at least most counts?

Watch: Tata Curvv review: Can it curve a niche for itself?

Here is our Tata Curvv drive review:

Tata curvv: unconventional connect.

The Curvv EV and Curvv may be based on separate platforms but both look nearly identical to one another. At least at first several glances. The most prominent design element on both, of course, is the sloping roofline itself. The flush door handles with lights are also shared and both models stands on 18-inch wheels although the alloy designs are different.

Tata Curvv

Even the face is sort of similar - stretched LED light bar and the placement for the Tata logo. But there is obviously no charging flap on the Curvv and the LED headlight units are vertically stacked instead of the triangular shape on the electric version. The grille, however, is the biggest differentiation as the Curvv gets a blackened design with horizontal chrome elements instead of a closed grille that is on Curvv EV.

Tata Curvv

From the rear, the Curvv looks its sporty best while still baring a minimalist design. The stretched LED tail lamp is spread across the entire length of the trunk while a high rear bumper and a spoiler add to the visual character at play. The rear glass, however, is once again quite small which hampers visibility from inside the cabin.

Tata Curvv

Tata Curvv: Chronicling the cabin

Once again, the cabin of the Curvv is largely similar to that of the Curvv EV. The one biggest difference for me though is the massive boot that the engine-powered model gets - 500 litres. The cargo area at the very back is outright humongous and can fit luggage placed not just side-by-side but several on top of one another too. And the fact that you can open the boot with gesture control as well as set the height to which the trunk door opens are neat additions as well.

But over to the business end of the cabin - the dashboard layout is pleasant enough with the purple/lavender colour scheme used generously in our particular top variant. The free-standing infotainment screen remains one of the best in the segment, but as long as every function works as it is meant to. At least in our review unit, it did not throw up any glitches although we heard a few others complain about certain functions not working as intended. No complaints against the all-digital driver display or the nine-speaker JBL sound system either.

Tata Curvv

What is slightly weird though is that the steering alignment is a bit crooked and that the steering itself can only be adjusted for rake, not reach. Hard plastics are plenty in the front half of the cabin too while there are no cup-holders barring two inside the glove-box. What this means is that while premium functions like electronically-adjustable driver seat, wireless phone charging, wireless support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a panoramic sunroof, voice-activated control functions and seat ventilation are great, the Curvv cabin isn't too big on simple and practical additions. The storage section on the doors are also rather limited, especially at the back, and the front passenger seat could have also incorporated the electronic seat adjustment functionality.

Tata Curvv

At the back, space is quite adequate despite the sloping roofline. There is decent among of kneeroom, under-thigh support, legspace and room for feet and even the headroom for someone with an average height - I am 5 feet 8 inches - is fine. The rear seats can be split-folded but the recline is a bit too much for my personal preference.

Tata Curvv

And there are still some very glaring quality control issues - the casing surrounding the rear AC vents came out entirely in our hands and panel gaps were very visible elsewhere too. Tata Motors has to seriously look at fixing these repeated issued into their models.

Curvv

Overall though, the Curvv does a good job of catering to both the front and rear occupants with a respectable lineup of features and a comfortable space.

Tata Curvv: Drive dynamics

Now here is where the Curvv, absolutely obviously, has to prove its very own unique mettle and it is not just against its electric twin but against the direct rivals it is taking on.

Curvv is the only mid-size SUV in the market at present which also comes with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCA) transmission. Unfortunately, we did not get much time to experience this version entirely but in the short span we did, came out mighty impressed with its absolutely thrilling drive trait. The 1.5-litre Kyrojet diesel engine does lack refinement in terms of grunt and groan. But that's only on the outside. Not much of that engine noise gets filtered into the cabin and paired to the DCA and the 'Sport' mode, it will put a smile on the face of an enthusiastic driver. The gearbox numbers tick along really well and there is hardly any lag or kickback feel that we experienced as we pushed the SUV around on straight as well as curving highway stretches. We wish though that we had more time with it.

Tata Curvv

Instead, time was spent mostly with the new Hyperion 1.2-litre petrol motor that is also paired to either a six-speed manual box or a seven-speed DCA. Our review unit had the former and it was clear from the word go that the manual stick is slick and with impressively large range. We even pulled the SUV to 4000 RPM mark at 80 kmph with the third gear, and the Curvv kept pulling and pulling. And pulling.

Tata Curvv

The ride itself though is a bit stiff and the suspension set up could have been softened a tad. But on broken road stretches, this actually comes across as a boon with a high ground clearance of over 208 mm also evoking a whole lot of confidence.

Where the Curvv came out a bit iffy though is with the spongy brake and the clutch lever is quite free. There is a palpable sense of vibration that seeps in from the foot every time the gear is adjusted which blunts the charm of driving what is otherwise a very eager vehicle.

Tata Curvv: Verdict

Tata Curvv is a great proposition in terms of its unique styling, spacious cabin, decent feature list and also comes with Level 2 ADAS or Advanced Driver Assistance System. It is also a lot of fun to drive. But quality-control issues remain and need to be addressed pronto.
