शिवपुराण के अनुसार श्रीशैलम मल्लिकार्जुन मंदिर की कहानी भगवान भोलेनाथ के परिवार से जुडी हुई हैं। माना जाता हैं की शंकर भगवान के छोटे पुत्र गणेश जी कार्तिकेय से पहले शादी करना चाहते थे। इसी बात पर भोलेनाथ और माता पार्वती ने इस समस्या को सुलझाने के लिए दोनों के समक्ष यह शर्त रखी की जो भी पहले पृथ्वी की परिकृमा करके लोटेगा उसका विवाह पहले होगा। यह सुनकर कार्तिकेय ने परिकृमा शुरू कर दी लेकिन गणेश जी बुद्धि से तेज थे उन्होंने माता पार्वती और भगवान शिव की परिकृमा करके उन्हें पृथ्वी के सामान बताया। जब यह समाचार कार्तिकेय को पता चला तो वह रूस्ट होकर क्रंच पर्वत पर चले गए। उन्हें मनाने के सारे प्रयास जब असफल हुए तो देवी पर्वती उन्हें लेने गई लेकिन वह उन्हें देखकर वहा से पलायन कर गए। इस बात से हतास होकर पार्वती जी वही बैठ गई और भगवान भोलेनाथ ज्योतिर्लिंग के रूप में प्रगत हुए। यह स्थान श्रीशैलम मल्लिकार्जुन मंदिर के रूप में दर्शनीय हुआ।

मल्लिकार्जुन मंदिर परिसर 2 हेक्टेयर की जगह में एक विशाल परिसर के रूप में स्थित है। यह 28 फीट लम्बी और 600 फीट ऊँची दीवारों से घिरा हुआ है। जिसमे मुख्य मंदिर श्री मल्लिकार्जुन और माता भ्रामराम्बा के है। मंदिर के गर्भगृह में लगभग आठ उंगल ऊंचा शिवलिंग स्थापित है। इन मंदिरों के साथ कई अन्य मंदिर जैसे वृद्ध मल्लिकार्जुन, सहस्त्र लिंगेस्वर, अर्ध नारीश्वर, वीरमद, उमा महेश्वर और ब्रह्मा मंदिर आदि बने हुए हैं। इस मंदिरों में खम्भे, मंडप और झरने बनाएं गए है। मंदिरों की दीवारों पर कई अद्भुत मुर्तियां बनी हुई है, जो लोगों को अपनी तरफ आकर्षित करती है।

मल्लिकार्जुन ज्योतिर्लिंग मंदिर का इतिहास

पुरातत्व विभाग के अनुसार इसका निर्माण कार्य लगभग दो हज़ार वर्ष पुराना है। इस ऐतिहासिक मंदिर के निर्माण में कई बड़े-बड़े राजा-महाराजा का योगदान रहा है। इस मंदिर का इतिहास दूसरी शताब्दी से मिलता है। इस मंदिर में पल्लव, चालुक्य, काकतीय, रेड्डी आदि राजाओं ने विकास कार्य करवाए थे। 14वीं सदी में प्रलयवम रेड्डी ने पातालगंगा से मंदिर तक सीढ़ीदार मार्ग का निर्माण करवाया था। विजयनगर साम्राज्य के राजा हरिहर ने मंदिर के मुख्यमंडपम और दक्षिण गोपुरम का निर्माण करवाया था। 15वीं शताब्दी में कृष्णदेव राय ने राजगोपुरम का निर्माण करवाया था। इसके साथ ही उन्होंने यहाँ एक सुन्दर मण्डप का भी निर्माण कराया था, जिसका शिखर सोने का बना हुआ था। सन 1667 में छत्रपति शिवाजी महाराज ने इस मंदिर के उत्तरी गोपुरम का निर्माण करवाया और उन्होंने मन्दिर से थोड़ी ही दूरी पर यात्रियों के लिए एक उत्तम धर्मशाला भी बनवायी थी।

मल्लिकार्जुन ज्योतिर्लिंग की कहानी

पौराणिक कथानक के अनुसार शिव पार्वती के पुत्र कार्तिकेय और गणेश भगवान दोनों में विवाह करने हेतु इस बात पर विवाद हुआ कि पहले किसका विवाह होना चाहिए। इस विवाद को समाप्त करने के लिए दोनों अपने माता-पिता के पास पहुँचे। उनके विवाद का समाधान करने के लिए माता पार्वती और भगवान शिव ने कहा कि तुम दोनों में जो भी इस पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा करके पहले यहाँ आ जाएगा, उसी का विवाह पहले होगा। माता पिता की शर्त को पूरा करने के लिए स्वामी कार्तिकेय जी अपने वाहन मोर पर बैठकर पृथ्वी की परिक्रमा करने के लिए चल दिए। श्रीगणेश जी स्थूल शरीर के है, पर महा बुद्धिमान है। उन्होंने अपनी माता पार्वती तथा देवाधिदेव महादेव को एक आसन विराजमान होने को कहा और उनकी सात परिक्रमा कर ली।

शिव और पार्वती उनकी चतुर बुद्धि को देख कर अति प्रसन्न हुए और उन्होंने श्रीगणेश का विवाह करा दिया। इस बात से दुखी होकर भगवान कार्तिकेय कैलाश छोड़कर क्रौंच पर्वत पर आकर निवास करने लगे। इधर कैलाश पर माता पार्वती का मन पुत्र स्नेह में व्याकुल होने लगा। वे भगवान शिव जी के साथ क्रौंच पर्वत पर पहुँच गईं। क्योकि स्वामी कार्तिकेय जी को पहले ही अपने माता-पिता के आगमन की सूचना मिल गई थी, इसलिए वे वहाँ से तीन योजन अर्थात् छत्तीस किलोमीटर दूर चले गये। कार्तिकेय भगवान के चले जाने पर भगवान शिव उस क्रौंच पर्वत पर ज्योतिर्लिंग के रूप में प्रकट हो कर स्थापित हो गए। “मल्लिका” अर्थात माता पार्वती और “अर्जुन” अर्थात भगवान शिव, इस प्रकार शिव और शक्ति दोनों की दिव्य ज्योति के सम्मिलित रूप में वे श्रीमल्लिकार्जुन ज्योतिर्लिंग के नाम से प्रसिद्ध हुए। हमारे धर्म शास्त्रों के अनुसार पुत्र स्नेह के कारण भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती प्रत्येक पूर्णिमा और अमावस्या के पर्व पर पुत्र से मिलने यहाँ आते हैं।

यहाँ समान्य दर्शन के लिए पुरुषों व महिलाओं के लिए कोई ड्रेस कोड नहीं है। अभिषेक व अन्य पूजा करने के लिए पुरुषों को केवल धोती या लुंगी पहन कर और ऊपर के शरीर में बिना वस्त्र पहने प्रवेश करना आवश्यक है और महिलाओं को साड़ी पहनना अनिवार्य है।

माता भ्रमराम्बा देवी शक्ति पीठ मंदिर

मल्लिकार्जुन मंदिर के पीछे कुछ सीढ़ियां चढ़ने पर आदिशक्ति देवी भ्रमरम्बा का मंदिर है। बावन शक्तिपीठों में से एक इस पवित्र धाम में सती माता की ग्रीवा (गला या गरदन) गिरी थी। यहाँ इस मंदिर में शक्ति को देवी महालक्ष्मी के रूप पूजा जाता है। माता के दर्शन के साथ साथ गर्भगृह में स्थापित श्रीयंत्र के दर्शन और सिन्दूर से उसका पूजन अवश्य करें।

प्राचीन काल में ‘अरुणासुर’ नाम के राक्षस ने संपूर्ण विश्व पर विजय प्राप्त कर ली थी। उसे ब्रम्हा जी से यह वरदान प्राप्त था कि कोई भी दो पैरों या चार पैरों वाला जीव उसका वध न कर सके। उस अत्याचारी राक्षस का अंत करने के लिए माँ आदि शक्ति ने भ्रामरी (भ्रमराम्बिका) का रूप धारण कर लिया। भ्रमराम्बा का अर्थ है, ‘मधुमक्खियों की माता’। उन्होंने असंख्य छह पैरों वाली मधुमक्खियों को उत्पन्न किया और उन सारी मधुमक्खियों ने कुछ ही क्षणों में अरुणासुर का वध करके उसकी पूरी सेना का भी विध्वंस कर दिया।

मल्लिकार्जुन ज्योतिर्लिंग मंदिर में आरती और दर्शन का समय

मल्लिकार्जुन मंदिर सुबह 5:30 से दोपहर 01:00 बजे तक दर्शन के लिए खुला रहता है। इसके बाद शाम को 06:00 से 10:00 बजे तक खुला रहता है। इस मंदिर में आरती प्रात: 05:15 से 06:30 तक होती है। संध्या आरती शाम को 05:20 से 06:00 तक होती है। यहाँ पर प्रसाद के रूप में लड्डू का प्रसाद अर्पित किया जाता है।

श्रीशैलम पातालगंगा, श्रीशैलम

श्रीशैलम का प्रमुख पर्यटन स्थल कृष्णा नदी को पाताल गंगा कहा जाता है। पाताल गंगा जाने के दो रास्ते है। एक जिसमे नदी तक पहुंचने के लिए लगभग 500 सीढिया उतरकर नीचे जाना पड़ता है। दूसरा रास्ता रोप से जाता है। रोपवे से जाना बहुत रोमांचकारी अनुभव होता है। बहुत ऊंचाई से कृष्णा नदी, हरे-भरे घने जंगल और श्री शैलम डेम का अद्भुद प्राक्रतिक नजारा दिखाई देता है। पाताल गंगा में डुबकी लगाने पर पुण्य की प्राप्ति होती है।

श्रीशैलम डैम, श्रीशैलम

श्रीशैलम में घूमने के लिए श्रीशैलम डैम बहुत एक खूबसूरत स्थान है। पाताल गंगा पहुचने के बाद आप बोट से नदी और डैम की सैर कर सकते है। बोट से श्रीशैलम डैम धूमते समय नल्लमाला पहाड़ियों की खूबसूरत हरियालियों के बीच कृष्णा नदी का विहंगम द्रश्य बहुत खूबसूरत लगता है। कृष्णा नदी पर स्थित श्रीशैलम बांध देश में दूसरी सबसे बड़ी जलविद्युत परियोजना है। दिन के उजाले में डैम की 290 मीटर की ऊंचाई से गिरते पानी के द्रश्य आपको रोमांचित कर देता है।

साक्षी गणपति मंदिर, श्रीशैलम

साक्षी गणपति मंदिर श्रीशैलम से 3 किमी की दूरी पर स्थित है। श्रीशैलम के धार्मिक स्थलों में से एक साक्षी गणपति मंदिर का दर्शन करना हर भक्त के किये अनिवार्य है। यदि आप साक्षी गणपति मंदिर नहीं जाते है, तो आपकी यात्रा पूरी नहीं होती है। भगवान गणेश आपकी यात्रा के साक्षी होते है। वे मल्लिकार्जुन ज्योतिर्लिंग की यात्रा करने करने वाले सभी लोगों का रिकॉर्ड रखते है। यह रिकॉर्ड भगवान शिव के पास पहुचता है।

चेंचू लक्ष्मी जनजातीय संग्रहालय, श्रीशैलम

श्रीशैलम के पर्यटन स्थलों में एक चेंचु लक्ष्मी जनजातीय संग्रहालय, श्रीशैलम के प्रवेश द्वार के निकट स्थित है। इस संग्रहालय में श्रीसैलम के जंगलों में निवास करने वाले लोगों के जीवन की एक झलक दिखाई देती है। इस संग्रहालय में माता चेंचु लक्ष्मी की मूर्ति भी दर्शनीय है। इस जनजातीय संग्रहालय में विभिन्न जनजातियों से संबंधित कलाकृतियाँ, उनके हथियार, दैनिक उपयोग की वस्तुओं, संगीत वाद्ययंत्र और कई अन्य बस्तुएं शामिल हैं। इस संग्रहालय में जनजातियों के सदस्यों द्वारा जंगलों में उत्पन्न प्राक्रतिक शहद को एकत्रित करके शहद बेचा जाता है।

पालधारा पंचधारा, श्रीशैलम

श्रीशैलम से 4 किमी दूर पालधारा पंचधारा श्रीशैलम का आकर्षक पर्यटन स्थल है। यह स्थान एक संकीर्ण घाटी में स्थित है। जहाँ 160 सीढिया चढ़कर जाना पड़ता है। इस जगह पर भगवान आदि शंकराचार्य ने तपस्या और प्रसिद्ध ‘शिवानंदलाहारी’ की रचना की थी। यहाँ पर साल भर पहाड़ियों से जल की धारा निरंतर गिरती रहती है। आगे जाकर यह धारा कृष्णा नदी में सम्मलित हो जाती है। इस धारा के जल में कई प्रकार के औषधीय गुण है, इसलिए कई लोग इसका जल अपनी बीमारियों को ठीक करने के लिए ले जाते हैं।

हटकेश्वर मंदिर, श्रीशैलम

श्रीशैलम से 5 किमी की दूरी पर स्थित हाटकेश्वर मंदिर श्रीशैलम के प्रसिद्ध मंदिरों में एक हैं। ‘हटका’ का अर्थ सोना (गोल्ड) होता है। इस मंदिर में स्वर्ण का शिवलिंग स्थापित है। इस मंदिर के सामने एक तालाब स्थित है। जिसे हाथकेस्वर तीर्थ कहा जाता है।

अक्क महादेवी गुफाएं, श्रीशैलम

श्रीशैलम से लगभग 10 किलोमीटर की दूरी पर स्थित अक्क महादेवी गुफ़ाएँ श्रीशैलम में देखने लायक स्थल हैं। ये प्राचीन गुफाएं कृष्णा नदी के पास स्थित हैं। अक्कमाहदेवी भगवान मल्लिकार्जुनस्वामी की भक्त थी। उन्होंने इस गुफाओं में तपस्या की थी इसलिए इन्हें अक्कमाहदेवी गुफा कहा जाता है। ये गुफाएं बहुत ही आकर्षक और प्राकृतिक सौंदर्य से भरपूर हैं। अक्क महादेवी गुफ़ाएँ जाने के लिए पाताल गंगा रोपवे से टिकट लेनी होती है। फिर स्टीमर के माध्यम से आप वहा घूमने जा सकते है।

मल्लिकार्जुन ज्योतिर्लिंग से लगभग 58 किमी की दूरी स्थित मल्लेला तीर्थम जल प्रपात श्रीशैलम का एक खूबसूरत स्थान है। यह अद्भुत झरना नल्लामाला के शांत घने जंगल के बीच स्थित है। घने जंगलों के बीच में स्थित इस झरने तक पहुंचने के लिए 350 कदम नीचे उतरना पड़ता है। यह स्थान प्रकृति प्रेमियों के लिए एक रोमांच से भरा अनुभव है।

शिखरेश्वर मंदिर, श्रीशैलम

श्रीशैलम की सर्वोच्च चोटी पर स्थित शिखरेश्वर मंदिर श्रीशैलम का लोकप्रिय पर्यटन स्थल है। यह मंदिर सिखाराम के नाम से भी प्रसिद्ध है। सन 1398 में बना यह प्राचीन मंदिर भगवान शंकर को समर्पित है। इस मंदिर से खड़े होकर श्रीशैलम मंदिर और कृष्णा नदी का विहंगम दृश्य दिखाई देता है। यहाँ की मान्यता के अनुसार इस मंदिर में स्थापित नंदी जी के सींगों के मध्य से श्रीशैलम मंदिर के दर्शन करने से जन्म-मरण के चक्र से मुक्ति मिल जाती है।

कृष्णा नदी के दक्षिणी तट पर एक मंदिर है, जिसके लिए श्रीशैलम शहर जाना जाता है। मल्लिकार्जुन स्वामी मंदिर, शहर का सबसे प्रसिद्ध मंदिर है और इसकी जड़ें 6 शताब्दियों के इतिहास में पाई जाती हैं, जब इसे विजयनगर के राजा हरिहर राय ने बनवाया था। ऐसा माना जाता है कि जब कार्तिकेय भगवान गणेश से प्रतियोगिता हार गए थे, इस बात से रूठकर कार्तिकेय क्रंच पर्वत चले गए थे। जब भगवान शिव पार्वती उन्हें मनाने के लिए आए तो वे वहां से भी पलायन कर गए। हालांकि शिव अर्जुन और पार्वती ने उनके साथ नाम बदलकर श्रीशैलम में उनके साथ रहना शुरू कर दिया। शिव ने अपना नाम बदलकर अर्जुन रख लिया, तो वही पार्वती ने मल्लिका रख लिया, इस तरह मंदिर का नाम मल्लिकार्जुन पड़ गया।

नागार्जुनसागर श्रीशैलम टाइगर रिजर्व - Nagarjunsagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve in Hindi

इस टाइगर रिजर्व का कुल क्षेत्रफल 3568 एकड़ है, जो इसे भारत के सबसे बड़े टाइगर रिजर्व में से एक बनाता है। श्रीशैलम बांध और नागार्जुनसागर बांध भी इसी जगह पर स्थित हैं। पर्यटकों को रोजाना सुबह 7 बजे से शाम 5 बजे तक जंगल में जाने की इजाजत है। आप रोजाना सुबह 7 बजे से शाम 4 बजे तक करीब 800 रुपये में 6 लोगों के लिए डेढ़ घंटे की जीप की सवारी का अनुभव ले सकते हैं। बाघ के अलावा, यहां तेंदुए, सुस्त भालू, ढोल, भारतीय पैंगोलिन, चीतल, सांभर हिरण, शेवरोटेन, ब्लैकबक, चिंकारा और चौसिंघा भी देखे जा सकते हैं। रिजर्व में जाने का सबसे अच्छा समय जून से अक्टूबर के महीनों के बीच है।

अक्का महादेवी गुफाएं श्रीशैलम में देखी जाने वाली सबसे एडवेंचरस गुफाएं मनाई जाती हैं। पर्यटकों को गुफाओं तक पहुंचने के लिए नदी मार्ग को पार करना पड़ता है, जो आप बास्केट बोट के जरिए पार कर सकते हैं। इसके बाद गुफाओं तक पहुंचने के लिए 10 मिनट का ट्रैकिंग रास्ता भी पूरा करना पड़ता है। ये गुफाएं श्रीशैलम में सबसे अधिक देखे जाने वाले पर्यटन स्थलों में से एक हैं। गुफाएं पूरा दिन पर्यटकों के लिए खुली रहती हैं। हालांकि बोटिंग के जरिए यहां पहुंचने के लिए आपको पहले से बुकिंग करनी पड़ेगी। बुकिंग रोज सुबह 10.30 बजे से शुरू होती है।

One Day trip to Srisailam

Srisailam is a small town tucked in the Nalamalla forests, Andhra Pradesh. Srisailam holds a very special place in Hinduism. It is famous for Mallikarjuna Temple, which is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga. It is also called the kedar of the south . I’m a Shiva follower and I was really looking forward to visit this temple ever since the day I came to Hyderabad. I feel really happy and calm when I visit a temple and the feeling is on another level when visiting a temple with so much importance in Hinduism. I’ve written this post, to tell you how to reach Srisailam and what to do in Srisailam apart from visiting the temple.

Hyderabad to Srisailam

The distance from Hyderabad to Srisailam is around 220 KMs . The road from Hyderabad to Srisailam is in a really good condition . Also, the road journey is a scenic one. Specially, the Ghats area is a good ride. The road to Srisailam passes through Nagarjunsagar Srisailam Tiger Reserve, which is the largest tiger reserve in India. There are restrictions on entry time to this tiger reserve. As per the board at the entrance, the vehicles are not allowed to enter between 10 PM – 6 AM. So, if you are planning to go to Srisailam by your own vehicle, ensure that you enter the gate before 9 PM. This means, you need to leave from Hyderabad before 6 PM .

The bus took one pit stop in between for breakfast. The place at which the bus stopped, provided a variety of food items to choose from. The scenic beauty along the road was really awesome. In between, we came across Dindi reservoir, but the bus didn’t stop there. It looked like a good place to take a break. So, if you’re going by your own vehicle don’t forget to stop at this point. For more information, you can search for dindi reservoir on google. Anyways, the bus was approaching the Nalamalla hills and I was expecting a good view around the forest area.

The forest area provided a very good view. I felt that a bike trip to Srisailam is the best way to enjoy the beauty of the road.

The bus reached the srisailam bus stop at about 12:15 PM. Upon enquiring I found out that its good to visit the Sri Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Temple during the evening Aarti. So, I decided to see other places first and then to visit the temple in the evening. I first went to eat something in the market. The eateries were giving only south Indian food, the food was overpriced.

Boating at Krishna river

After having food We decided to go for boating. To reach the boating point we can take the Ropeway. The Ropeway took us down towards the banks of Krishna river, where we can enjoy the boating and closer view of the Srisailam dam. We can take a combined ticket for ropeway and boating at the ropeway ticket counter.

The holy dip at patalganga – Krishna River

Once we were back at the boating starting point, it was time to get a holy dip at the Krishna river. It is also called as Paatal Ganga. Few people told me that its good to visit temples after taking a holy dip at the palatal Ganga. So, I moved towards the ghat made near the river to have the holy dip. By the time we completed the boating and holy dip at palatal Ganga, it was 4:00 PM. Now, it was time to visit the temple. My friend is not a very religious kind of guy, so instead of visiting the temple, he chooses to go on a short tour of srisailam city.

Srisailam Dam

The Srisailam Dam is built on the Krishna river. Its one of the largest dam in south india. It is really scenic to watch this Dam, especially during night. It not only serves its purpose of irrigation and power generation, but is also one of tourist attractions of Srisailam. Its really amazing to see the dam when floodgates are opened in monsoon.

Sakshi Ganapati temple

We come across this temple while on the way to Srisailam. It is located 3 KMs before srisailam. The idol of lord Ganesha in this temple is carved out of black stone. It is believed that you must visit this temple before visiting Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy temple . Sakshi in Hindi means Witness . So, this temple is a kind of witness that you visited Lord shiva at Srisailam.

Chenchu Lakshmi Tribal Museum

This museum is dedicated to the tribal culture. The museum tries to represent the culture with nice information boards, sculptures, houses. Its a very good initiative to understand the lifestyle and culture of the various tribes of Andhra Pradesh.

Akkamahadevi Caves

The Akkamahadevi caves are located across the krishna river in the nallamalla forest. To reach the caves, we need to take a boat from the Patalganga. The boat takes around 1.5 Hours to reach the Akkamahadevi caves from Patalganga. The ticket price is ₹400 and you’ll be able to get the ticket for the boat at the ropeway ticketing counter. Complete trip from Patalganga to Akkamahadevi caves will take anywhere between 4-5 Hours.

Info : – There are auto rickshaws available in the main Srisailam area that take you on a short Srisailam tour for ₹ 150. They take you to the main tourist attractions of Srisailam.

The road-trip to Srisailam

If there is one road trip that will provide you with stunning panoramas of wildlife and jungle, gushing rivers, caves, and the thrill of driving through the ghats, this is it.You’ll pass through Nallamalla Forests, which will immerse you in nature — flanked by greenery on either side and infamous road bends, riders can have the time of their lives.

Wildlife enthusiasts can enjoy the company of roars at the 3,586-square-kilometer Srisailam Tiger Reserve, while water lovers can visit Mallela Theertham, a waterfall within the Nallamala forest.

We started from Hyderabad at 8 AM in the morning for the two days weekend Srisailam tour. The route to Srisailam is that you have to turn left at the Gachibowli flyover to take the Hyderabad-Srisailam highway. The road from Hyderabad to Srisailam passes through Telangana’s suburbs and smaller towns before you enter the Andhra Pradesh hinterlands, as you intercept intriguing natural and tourist places along the way.

The last 80 kilometers drive is forest and ghat road that is sheer visual delight. There are several blind curves as you climb the hill to Srisailam that look quite fearsome. But for me who has the experience of traveling extensively in the high mountains of Himalayas, it is a routine kind of thing.

On your road trip to Srisailam you encounter several places of tourist interest such as the Dindi Reservoir, Srisailam Tiger Reserve, Octopus Viewpoint and the Mallela Theertham Waterfall which you can visit. You can also visit the attractions during your return journey. Once the majestic Srisailam Dam over river Krishna is in sight, you know that the temple town you are heading for is just a matter of a few minutes. You cross the river and you are in Andhra Pradesh. Now that we have reached Srisailam, let me now take you on a tour of the hilltop town.

Bhramaramba Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple

Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, also known as Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Srisailam due to its illustrious history and religious significance. Within the temple’s arena, there are two shrines dedicated to Lord Mallikarjuna and Deity Bhramaramba, who are said to be the incarnations of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati respectively. It is also one of India’s twelve jyotirlinga temples.

The first historical mention of Srisailam hill can be found in the Pulumavis Nasik inscription from the first century AD. Among the renowned emperors who worshiped God Mallikarjuna Swamy and contributed to the temple’s development were the Sathavahanas, Ikshavakus, Pallavas, Vishnukundis, Chalukyas, Kakatiyas, Reedy Kings, Vijayanagara Emperors, and Chatrapathi Shivaji.

Prataparudra of the Kakatiya Dynasty worked hard to improve this temple and funded for its upkeep. The Reddy Kings ruled during the Golden Age of Srisailam, during which all of the dynasty’s rulers celebrated service to the temple. Prolaya Vema Reddy of the Reddy Dynasty built a tiered road between Srisailam and Pathala Ganga in the 14th century, while Anavema Reddy built Veera Siromandapam.

The Mukhamantapam of Swamy shrine, as well as a Gopuram on the temple’s southern side, were built by the Second Harihararaya of the Vijayanagara Empire. Sri Krishnadevaraya built the Rajagopuram on the eastern side of the temple in the 15th century, as well as Salumantapas on both sides. In the year 1667 AD, Chatrapathi Sivaji financed the construction of the Gopuram on the northern side.

Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple was built in Dravidian style and the sanctum is a shell like structure that enshrines Lord Mallikarjuna. The small black linga has a hooded golden cover. The garbha griha is small and only priests are allowed inside.

Soon after reaching Srisailam, we headed for the temple for darshan. The shrine was moderately crowded, yet we had a good darshan of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati..

Sakhi Ganapathi Temple

Sakshi Ganapati Temple, situated between Srisailam Temple and Srisailam Dam, is one of the sacred places frequented by pilgrims since time immemorial. It is 3 kilometres from Srisailam Mallikarjun Temple and 11 kilometres from Srisailam Dam. The Ganapathi in this temple is said to keep a regular record of all pilgrims in order to provide Sakshyam (proof) of their visit to this Kshetram, hence the name Sakshi Ganapathi. It is one of the most popular Srisailam tourist attractions.

The god is masterfully sculpted, holding a book in the left hand and a pen in the right, as though noting down the names of devotees. It is customary for pilgrims to visit this temple on their way to the Swamy Mallikarjuna Temple.

Chenchu Lakshmi Tribal Museum

The tribal museum is one of the most sought after attractions that you must visit which is located just 1 kilometer away from the Srisailam Temple in the Pathal Ganga trail. According to folklore, “Chenchu Lakshmi ” was one of the bravest women born in an Adivasi tribe. She was well-known for her archery skills and married a man who was a reincarnation of Lord Narasimha Swamy. The term “Chenchu” refers to the Chenchu tribal community, who believe they are direct descendants of Chechu Lakshmi and Lord Narasimha Swamy.

The tribe is indigenous to the region and may still be found throughout much of Andhra Pradesh and the Mahboobnagar districts of Telangana. Despite its name, the museum depicts the life of people from different tribes, including the Khond tribe, the Yerukala community, the Savara tribe, the Yanadi tribe, the Gond tribes, and the Kolam community. The museum pays homage to the tribal community and allows visitors to have a closer look at their lives.

The collection includes God idols, handmade musical instruments, hunting weapons, life-sized statues portraying everyday activities. a model of a typical tribal hut, and a fascinating garden where children can play around abstract statues of dinosaurs, boats, and other figures. Do visit the nearby shop that sells honey collected by local tribes.

Pathala Ganga

Pathala Ganga is a sacred site in the backwaters of the River Krishna located 1 kilometre from Srisailam Mallikarjuna Temple. This is the place where devotees can take a holy bath in the Krishna River. From here, you can see the vast reservoir and the majestic mountains covered in the lush green Nallamala Forest. It is one of the most popular Srisailam tourist attractions for the best views of the Krishna River. It is located behind the Srisailam Dam, and the flood gates may be seen from here. Pathala Ganga is also a boating facility for pleasure rides and trip to Akka Mahadevi Cave.

To reach Pathala Ganga, steps have been built.From Hanuman Temple, there are around 500 steps to reach Pathala Ganga. There is also the option of traveling via ropeway. The ropeway which starts from the ropeway centre near Srisailam Haritha Hotel is quite popular among visitors.

Srisailam Dam

With just 14 kilometers to go for Srisailam, you come across the majestic stricture of Srisailam dam, on the boundary of Mahabubnagar District, Telangana (Left bank) and Kurnool District, Andhra Pradesh (Right bank). It is one of India’s largest dams and the third-largest hydroelectric project of the country. The Srisailam Dam, located on the Hyderabad-Srisailam highway, is one of the most popular attractions to visit in Srisailam. This is another famous place that must feature in your Hyderabad tour itinerary.

The dam’s construction began in 1960 and took more than 20 years to complete before it was inaugurated in 1981. The dam was constructed 300 metres above sea level in a deep gorge in the Nallamala hills. The dam measures 512 metres in length, 240.79 metres in height (885 feet), and has 12 radial crest gates. The dam has a live storage capacity of 274 TMC and provides irrigation water for around 200,000 acres of land in Kurnool and Cuddapah districts.

The Srisailam Dam is a man-made marvel that has become one of the area’s most popular tourist attractions. The dam, which is surrounded by beautiful landscapes on all sides, provides stunning views during the monsoon season when all of the gates are open. The lush vegetation all around, the sound of water gushing through, and the rhythmic fall of water make it a nature lover’s delight. There are a few view points on both sides of the dam where you can capture the beautiful views of the reservoir.

Akka Mahadevi Caves

The Akka Mahadevi Caves, located about 18 kilometres from Srisailam, are naturally formed caves with a shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. The caves are named after Akka Mahadevi, a 12th-century Kannada poet, saint, and philosopher who came here in seclusion to perform penance and pray to Lord Shiva. The Shivlingam seen here is naturally formed and is one of the region’s most revered idols.

One of the highlights of the trip is the journey to the cave. You can take a boat at Pathala Ganga and sail upstream along the winding Krishna river to a ferry station, from where a short trek leads to the caves. The verdant scenery of the Nallamala hills, even during the boat rides and treks, is captivating to say the least, and if you enjoy hiking and nature trails, this place is a must-see! The caves themselves have been carved for over a million years, and apart from the shrine, not much has been touched here- there are no shops or eateries nearby.

Sikharam or Shikhareswaram temple

You can visit this place during your return trip from Srisailam. Sikharam is located 8 kilometers from Srisailam Mallikarjun Temple and 12 kilometers from Srisailam Dam, is the highest point of the Srisailam Hills, standing at 2830 feet above sea level. According to the Skanda Purana, a mere glance at this Sikharam frees the human soul from the curse of rebirth.

People used to walk to Srisailam in the past, and those who were unable to reach the shrine returned by seeing this hilltop. It is one of the most popular places to visit in Srisailam and is located about 3 kilometers from the route that connects Srisailam Temple and Srisailam Dam.

The Sikhareswaram Temple is an ancient stone edifice with Garbhagriha, Antaralaya, and a 16-pillared Mukhamanda. The god here is known as Veera Sankara Swamy and is also known as Sikhareswara Swamy. In the year 1398 AD, the Reddy Kings built a flight of steps to this temple, as well as a tank at this site. This location provides a panoramic view of Srisailam’s entire temple complex, including the meandering Krishna River.

This temple is reached after a steep climb of 150 well-laid stone stairs. There is another entry on the southern side, somewhat ahead of the main entrance, with only 30 stairs.

Paladhara Panchadara

Paladhara Panchadara is a lovely picturesque place, around 4 kilometres from Srisailam. A flight of stairs leads you to an infusion of several streams. The trickling of streams, combined with the beautiful natural environment that surrounds the area, make it the ideal place to think and unwind. It also has religious significance because the name of the main stream, Paladhara Panchadara, is taken from the Hindu God Lord Shiva. The stream is thought to have been called after the one that emerges from Lord Shiva’s forehead- ‘pala’ means ‘forehead,’ and ‘dhara’ means ‘stream.’

This particular steam flows all year and meets the holy Krishna river, and while it is merely that small stop during your visit to the city, its rich history cannot be overlooked. It is believed that this is where Bhagavan Adisankara wrote and composed the Sivanandalahari, a devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Shiva that dates back to the 8th century.

Hatakeswaram Temple

You can visit this temple en route your return trip from Srisailam. Located on the foothills of Nallamala Hills, just opposite of Paladhara Panchadara.

HathakeswaramTemple holds a significant position among devotees. Anyone who comes for a Srisailam tour pays a visit to this ancient temple as well. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. A mystical Shiva lingam has been enshrined in the temple.

Although smaller in structure, Hathakesvara Temple presents beautiful architecture. This temple is consisted of an open Mukha-mandapa with many pillars and a Garbhagriha.

It attracts devotees from everywhere with its significant history. One of the major attractions of Hathakesvara Temple is the belief that by visiting this temple and seeking blessing of the Sri Hatakeswara Swamy, a form of Lord Shiva, devotees can get rid of various diseases. The Shiva Lingam is said to hold exceptional powers to cure illness of the devotees.

Another appealing feature of Hatakeswara Swamy Temple is the stunning view of the surrounding hills and river from here.

Octupus Viewpoint

Octopus Viewpoint is one of the most recent additions to the tourist attractions in Andhra Pradesh’s Srisailam. The viewpoint is located 5 kilometres before Domalpenta and provides breathtaking views of the surrounding forests, enthralling gorges, and the mesmerising backwaters of the Krishna River.

Octopus View Point got its name from the Krishna River, which looks like an octopus spread between the hillocks. It offers a breathtaking bird’s-eye view of the entire valley below. In addition, the reserve offers a regular safari tour, which is the main attraction of the area. A must visit en route your road trip to Srisailam.

Srisailam Tiger Reserve

During your road trip to Srisailam, you encounter Nagarjuna Sagar Srisailam Sanctuary aka Srisailam Tiver Reserve located 60 kilometres from Nagajuna Sagar, 30 kilometres from Srisailam, and 173 kilometres from Hyderabad. This is the country’s largest tiger reserve, spread over 3568 square kilometres. It is divided into two reservoirs: Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam. It was designated a wildlife sanctuary in 1973 and was later incorporated into Project Tiger a decade later.

Panthers, tigers, spotted deer, mouse deer, black buck, sambars, chousingha nilgai, tree straw, mugger crocodile, and wolves, sloth beer, and wild dogs can all be found here.

The Forest Department organises Jeep Safari through the forest (to the Farahabad Viewpoint) from the entry point on the Hyderabad-Srisalam highway. The entry point is located 57 kilometres before Srisailam, between Mannanur and Vatvarlapally. The trip lasts approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes and costs Rs. 800 per trip (can accommodate 6 people). Safari does not permit the use of private vehicles.

Mallella Theertham Waterfal

Mallela Theertham is a charming waterfall located in the dense Nallamala forest and is situated close to Hyderabad-Srisailam highway and is a popular place to visit while travelling to Srisailam.After travelling 50 kilometres from Srisailam to Hyderabad, take a right turn into the forest at Vatwarlapally and drive for about 8 kilometres to reach the falls. The route leading up to the falls is rough, and it gets even worse during the rainy season.

Water falls directly from a high cliff on Shiv Lingas-like rock formations at a height of roughly 150 feet. The falls’ surroundings, which are flanked by dense forest, provide a one-of-a-kind experience. The water comes from a small stream that flows through the deep jungle and meets the Krishna River. To access the falls from the road, about 380 well-laid steps must be walked down. The pool below the falls is fenced on all sides. If the flow of the stream is not too strong, there is a route to the bottom of the falls where you can play in the water.

Many sages are believed to have performed penances for LOrd Shiva here. During the summer, it is said that many tigers frequent this area to drink water. Mallela Theertham is a great place to spend a weekend with friends and family. The best time to visit the falls is between October and February. During the summer, there may not be much flow of water.

The nearest airport from Srisailam is Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The distance between Hyderabad Airport and Srisailam is about 150 km. You can get regular passenger trains and express trains from Markapur railway station to Srisailam..Kurnool(170 KM) and Secunderabad (215 KM) are the other important railway station from where you can easily travel to Srisailam by road.

Buses operated by the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) as well as certain private buses connect Srisailam to important neighbouring cities such as Markapur, Vijayawada, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga

The town (as well as the mandal) of Srisailam is reputed for the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga on the flat top of Nallamala Hills. The Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga is one of the 12 Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva and is also one among the 275 Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalangal . Srisailam has played a dominant role in the Hindu religious, cultural and social history since ancient times. The epigraphical evidence reveals that the history of Srisailam began with the Satavahanas who were the first empire builders in South India. The earliest known historical mention of the hill, Srisailam, can be traced to the King Vasishthiputra Pulumavi’s Nasik inscription of 1st Century A.D. Srisailam or Srisailamu (Śrīśailaṁ, Śrīśailamu) is situated in the Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh, India. It is on the banks of the Krishna River about 212 km south of Hyderabad and 179 km from Kurnool. It is sometimes spelled Shrishailam.

When Lord Murugan returned to Kailash after completing his trip around the earth, he heard about Ganesha’s marriage from Narada muni . This angered him. In spite of being restrained by his parents, he touched their feet in obeisance and left for Krounch Mountain. Parvati was very distraught at having to be away from her son, implored Lord Shiva to look for their son. Together, they went to Kumara. But, Kumara went away a further three Yojanas, after learning about his parents coming after him to Krouncha Mountain. Before embarking on a further search for their son on each mountain, they decided to leave a light on every mountain they visited. From that day, that place came to be known as Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga. It is believed that Shiva and Parvati visit this place on Amavasya (No moon day) and (full Moon day) Pournami, respectively. Visiting the Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga not only blesses one with innumerable wealth, but also name and fame and fulfills all the desires.

Once, a princess named Chandravati decided to go to the Jungle to do penance and meditation. She chose Kadali Vana for this purpose. One day, she witnessed a miracle. A Kapila cow was standing under a Bilwa tree and milk was flowing from all of its four udders, sinking into the ground. The cow kept doing this as a routine chore everyday. Chandravati dug up that area and was dumb founded at what she saw. There was a self-raising Swyambhu Shiva Linga . Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga has its origin about six centuries back. It was built by King Harihara Raya of Vijayanagar. A Spiritual Trip To Srisailam

As an ardent Lord Shiva fan, I’ve always wanted to visit Srisailam, a famous holy place in Andhra Pradesh, an abode of divine energy of Shakti and Shiva. Upon researching a bit more about this place, it came to my knowledge that Srisailam is not far from Hyderabad. So, I decided to visit the town on a weekend with my family by road and booked a reliable Hyderabad to Srisailam taxi .

Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple

Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple, popularly known as Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, is one of the most attractive places to visit in Srisailam, given its vibrant history and spiritual essence. As soon as I entered the temple, I witnessed two shrines devoted to Lord Mallikarjuna and Deity Bhramaramba, an embodiment of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

After talking to the priest here, I found out that this temple is amongst the twelve Jyotirlinga temples in India that is quite famous for its intriguing architecture and renowned Parakaram Wall.

Akka Mahadevi Caves

Akka Mahadevi Caves have naturally formed caverns located in the famous Nallamala Hills. One of the best parts of visiting these caves is the boat ride from the holy Patala Ganga River that lets you immerse in the untouched natural beauty. As I proceeded towards the end of this sacred cave, my guide pointed at the naturally formed Shiv Lingam that made me look in awe at this place.

Bhramaramba Devi Temple

Located on the banks of the famous Krishna river, Bhramaramba Devi Temple is another place I visited in this peaceful town of Srisailam. A key landmark, this temple is one of the 18 Shakthi Peethas in India, devoted to Goddess Bhramarambika (Goddess Parvati).

Famous for its Navratri and the Kumbham festivals, this temple stands tall with its stunning architecture within the premises of Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple.

Shikaresvara Temple

After lunch, the next stop on my list was the Shikaresvara Temple in Srisailam. This age-old temple remains situated atop the topmost hill in Srisailam – Sikharam with a height of approximately 2830 feet.

Devoted to Veera Sankara Swamy, an ardent follower of Lord Shiva, this temple is usually visited by many devotees with faith to relieve them of any vices. Upon reaching the highest altitude of this temple, I also witnessed some breathtaking vistas of the Krishna River and other beautiful terrains from this temple.

Hemareddy Mallamma Temple

Hemareddy Mallamma Temple is another famous Hindu temple devoted to Lord Shiva. Even though this temple was newly constructed in Srisailam, it still draws hundreds and thousands of devotees everyday. Situated on the western side of Mallikarjuna Temple, it is a perfect place to visit if you want to have a memorable and a spiritual tour.

The ‘Orgasm Gap’ Isn’t Going Away for Straight Women

A new study suggests they still have fewer orgasms during sex than men do, even with age and experience.

Sex researchers and therapists have long known that women in heterosexual relationships tend to have fewer orgasms than men do. A large new study suggests that this “orgasm gap” persists — and does not improve with age.

The Numbers

The research, published recently in the journal Sexual Medicine, found that across all ages, men of all sexual orientations reported higher orgasm rates during sex — from 70 to 85 percent — compared with 46 to 58 percent for women. Lesbian and bisexual women between ages 35 and 49 reported higher orgasm rates than their heterosexual counterparts.

The analysis included data from eight Singles in America surveys, which are funded and conducted by Match.com annually in collaboration with The Kinsey Institute, the sexuality and relationships research program at Indiana University. The sample included more than 24,000 single Americans between the ages of 18 and 100.

Researchers were especially interested in the question of whether orgasm rates vary by age. Amanda Gesselman, a research scientist with the Kinsey Institute and lead author on the study, said she thought the team might find evidence that the orgasm gap narrows as women develop confidence and learn what they like (and, perhaps, their partners develop skills to help pleasure them).

However, while older gay and bisexual men and lesbian women did have higher orgasm rates, “we really didn’t see evidence of closing the orgasm gap overall,” she said, adding that she hopes future studies will explore the age-orgasm connection further.

“We really, as a society, sort of prioritize men’s pleasure and undervalue women’s sexual pleasure,” Dr. Gesselman said. “And I think that contributes to consistent disparities.”

The Limitations

Emily Nagoski, a sex educator and author of the book “Come Together” — who did not work on the new study — said a limitation of the study was that the survey asked: “When having sexual intercourse in general, what percentage of the time do you usually have an orgasm?” But it did not provide a more specific definition of what “sexual intercourse” means.

Research shows the majority of women require some form of clitoral stimulation in order to orgasm. So if straight women defined “sexual intercourse” as vaginal penetration alone, it makes sense that there was a significant gap in orgasm rates, she said.

A more revealing question might be, “What percentage of the sex you have do you like?” Dr. Nagoski said. “Orgasm is not the measure of a sexual encounter. Pleasure is the measure of a sexual encounter.”

Ultimately, what matters is that people spend time figuring out what makes a satisfying sexual encounter for them — which often includes things like connection, trust and comfort, said Kristen Mark, professor at the Eli Coleman Institute for Sexual and Gender Health at the University of Minnesota.

“There are so many ways to experience sexual pleasure, so it’s important not to equate the orgasm gap to a pleasure gap,” she added.

Dr. Mark said that may be especially true later in life, when factors like the hormonal changes that occur during menopause, a partner’s erectile problems or other health challenges can make it difficult for women to reliably orgasm during sex — but they might still be enjoying the sex they are having.

What Progress Looks Like

At the same time that sex researchers and experts are calling for a more nuanced understanding of what makes sex “successful,” they express frustration at the fact that heterosexual women of all ages are still not having as many orgasms as their partners.

Laurie Mintz, a professor of psychology at the University of Florida and author of “Becoming Cliterate: Why Orgasm Equality Matters — and How to Get It,” said the study’s findings underscore the need for comprehensive sex education. But that’s not enough.

Women need to figure out what they find pleasurable, and then feel confident and comfortable communicating that to their partners, Dr. Mintz said. That requires an attitude that conveys “I deserve pleasure as much as my partner,” she added — and it also requires a partner who is receptive and open. Dr. Mintz acknowledged that both are easier said than done, calling the orgasm gap an “insidious” byproduct of patriarchal attitudes toward sex.

Women who are unable to orgasm, or who are simply not having sex that feels good, can talk to their general practitioner, Dr. Mark added — though she lamented that it tends to fall on patients, not medical professionals, to initiate conversations about sexual health. And she acknowledged that most doctors get little if any training in sexual health. Still, “it’s their job to meet you where you are and find you the resources you need,” Dr. Mark said. For instance, issues like dryness and pain during sex after menopause — which can make orgasms elusive — are treatable.

But she and other sexual health experts emphasized that there are larger issues at play. Among them, the lingering idea that women’s sexual pleasure is somehow secondary.

“It can be fixed,” Dr. Mintz said. “It’s going to take education, and empowerment, and acceptance of vibrators and lubricants, and using the word ‘clitoris’ — and all of that.”
