Rail Delivery Group - Britain Runs On Rail

Gates Travel - Rail Ticket Specialist

At its best, travelling by train can be a pleasant, civilised and relaxing experience.

We believe that planning your journey and buying tickets should be just as pleasant and civilised, but we know that buying tickets online can often be time-consuming and confusing.

Let Gates Travel take the strain out of booking rail tickets.

Why book with Gates Travel?

Because we can save you time and money..

Despite initiatives to simplify fares and make buying tickets easier, rail fares in the UK are still amazingly complex. Actually, that's often a good thing because it means there are lots of opportunities to save money, especially if you're making a journey that involves a few changes of train. Ticketing can be a minefield though and there's no substitute for professional advice.

Sadly, the friendly booking office clerk at your local station who used to sell you the right ticket for your journey is likely to have been replaced by a self-service machine these days. That's where Gates Travel can help. We've been issuing rail tickets since 1933, so we think it's fair to say that we're experts. Our inside knowledge and thorough understanding of fare rules, easements, permitted routes, break of journey allowances etc. often enables us to legitimately ticket journeys at considerably lower fares than can be found online.

When fares are displayed online, you only see the single or return fares for the specific station-to-station journey on the specific trains you've selected. Yet for a great many journeys this is not the cheapest or best way to issue the tickets. Even selecting 'Peak' or 'Off-Peak' ticket types can be tricky. There's no simple definition of what constitutes 'Off-Peak' because it varies for different journeys. Time restrictions may apply only during the morning or may also apply during the afternoon. A train may be an 'Off-Peak' service when it leaves one station, but become a 'Peak' service at the next station along the line, meaning potential savings of hundreds of pounds for those in the know.

Purchasing your rail ticket from Gates Travel will probably save you time and we'll do our best to save you money. But no matter what, we'll provide real value for money and real customer service, before and after you travel. That's something you won't get by booking online or buying your ticket from a machine.

Station ticket machines do have one advantage though. If you're not able to call into our offices and you need a ticket in a hurry, you can collect your Gates Travel rail ticket from any one of over 1,300 UK stations that provide a Ticket on Departure collection facility, either from the ticket vending machine or from the station booking office.

Where to buy

You can save yourself time by buying your Two Together Railcard online . The only things you'll need are:

  • Two separate digital photos (one for each person named on the Railcard) saved to your computer
  • A debit or credit card

What happens next?

Digital Railcard : if you buy a digital Railcard, you'll be sent a code and once you download the Railcard app and upload the card onto your phone, you can start using it straight away.

Physical Railcard : we aim to dispatch your Railcard within one working day of you ordering it, but it’s probably best to allow 5 working days for your Railcard to arrive. It’ll be sent out free of charge, but if you prefer, you have the option to pay for Special Delivery.

You have the option of paying £6.85 for our Special Delivery service. Providing you have placed your order before 1600hrs this will guarantee that your Railcard is delivered within two days (Monday to Thursday) or three days (Friday to Sunday).

You’ll need to have your Railcard with you to be able to get a discount on your rail ticket, so be sure to leave enough time before your journey for the Railcard to reach you.

Travelling today? You’re better off buying a digital Railcard or over the counter at a staffed National Rail station.

At a staffed station ticket office

You can buy a Two Together Railcard at any National Rail staffed station ticket office or National Rail-licensed Travel Agent. You can do it on the day you are travelling, just ensure the ticket office is open.

There are usually application forms available at stations, but in order to save time it’s a good idea to fill in the form before you get there. You can print and fill in the application form which is available to download here  and bring it with you.

If you're applying at a station, here's what you'll need to do:

  • Complete an application form
  • Provide two separate passport-sized photos, one of yourself and one of the other named cardholder

Please note that Railcards can’t usually be bought at stations operated by London Underground but which also service some National Rail routes. The exceptions to this are: Harrow & Wealdstone, Kenton, South Kenton, North Wembley, Wembley Central, Stonebridge Park, Harlesden, Kensal Green Queens Park, Gunnersbury and Kew Gardens.

You can also update your details here.

Don't forget you must be able to show your digital Railcard when buying tickets and travelling.

There are several varieties of Railcard that offer discounted fares when traveling on the UK’s National Rail Service. [1] X Research source If you're between the ages of 16 and 25, or if you're a full-time student who's age 26 or older, you can save 33% on rail fares with a 16-25 Railcard. You can also get discounts at certain retailers. Even better, it’s really easy to get this Railcard either online, in person, or by phone!

Making Sure You’re Eligible

Step 1 Gather evidence that you’re between ages 16 and 25.

  • A UK driver’s license.
  • A UK or international passport. (You do not need to be a UK citizen.)
  • A UK national identity card (only valid for in-person applications). [3] X Research source
  • A UK birth certificate (only valid for in-person applications).

Step 2 See if you qualify as a “mature student” if you’re over 25.

  • You must attend a recognized college or university for at least 15 hours per week and at least 20 weeks per year. Part-time students over age 25 are not eligible.
  • You need a valid college or university photo ID card.
  • Your college or university must complete a section of your application.
  • Note that the “mature student” card is only valid for 1 year at a time, while the standard 16-25 Railcard has 1-year and 3-year options.

Step 3 Check out the cost, benefits, and possible alternatives.

  • Additionally, 16-25 Railcard holders are eligible for discounts from partnering retailers by showing their card or using it online. [6] X Research source
  • If you’re 16 or 17 years of age, you may save even more by getting a 16-17 Saver Railcard. It carries essentially the same eligibility rules as the 16-25 Railcard, except for the age restriction. [7] X Research source

Ordering Your Card Online

Step 1 Make sure you have the necessary ID, payment, and photo items.

  • A valid UK driver’s license, or a valid UK or international passport.
  • A valid credit or debit card.
  • A digital passport-style photo that you can upload. Follow the same requirements for getting a passport photo where you live.

Step 2 Buy a digital 16-25 Railcard if you want to start saving immediately.

  • If you choose a digital Railcard, you’ll be given a code upon completing your online purchase. Download the Railcard app onto your smartphone and enter this code to activate your digital 16-25 Railcard.
  • Use your digital Railcard to buy National Rail tickets online, or open the app on your smartphone to buy tickets at National Rail-affiliated stations.

Step 3 Buy a physical Railcard if you're OK with waiting for a tangible card.

  • It may take up to 5 business days for the card to reach you within the UK.
  • You can also pay extra to have the card delivered more quickly by Special Delivery.
  • If you choose a physical Railcard, you’ll have to wait for the card to arrive and have it in your possession in order to get the discount at National Rail-affiliated stations.

Signing up in Person or by Phone

Step 1 Gather up the items you’ll need to get a 16-25 Railcard in person.

  • An application, which you can pick up and fill out on the spot or download ahead of time by clicking the relevant link at https://www.16-25railcard.co.uk/using-your-railcard/where-to-buy/ .
  • One of the following: a valid UK birth certificate; a valid UK national identity card; a valid UK driver’s license; a valid UK or international passport.
  • A passport-size and style photo. Follow the rules for passport photos where you live.
  • A valid form of payment: credit, debit, or cash. (Note that a 1-year card costs £30, while a 3-year card costs £70.)

Step 2 Get your card on the spot at a National Rail ticket office or licensed travel agency.

  • You can start using this card immediately after purchasing it.

Step 3 Buy your card over the phone instead by calling 0345 3000 250.

  • Your card will be sent by mail if you choose this option. It may take up to 5 days to arrive within the UK.

Getting a "Mature Student" Card

Step 1 Fill out the Mature Student application form and have it officially signed.

  • According to the form, the second section can be filled out by a tutor, head tutor, head of department, or university/college administration staff member.
  • Remember that, to be eligible, you must be: age 26 or above; attending a recognized UK university or college at least 15 hours per week and at least 20 weeks per year.

Step 2 Assemble the other application materials you’ll need.

  • A valid college or university ID card.
  • A valid UK driver’s license, or UK or international passport.
  • A passport-style photo that you can attach to the application before scanning it.
  • A credit or debit card. “Mature student” 16-25 Railcards cost £30 for 1 year. 3-year cards are not available in this case.

Step 3 Scan and upload the application form so you can order your card online.

  • The online purchase process is the same as for a standard 16-25 Railcard, except that you’ll also have to upload the scanned application form and provide your college or university ID card number.
  • Call Railcard at 0345 3000 250 for more information regarding your options for getting this type of card. [17] X Research source

A quick guide to the Senior Railcard and Disabled Persons Railcard

national rail licensed travel agent

This article was published in 2016. For the latest information about Network Senior Railcards visit the website of your local provider, or take a look at our article on about the new Trainline Railcard .

Older and disabled people are amongst those who can enjoy discounts on travelling by train by taking up railcard offers. Northern Rail has created this quick guide to the benefits of railcards in the UK and how to apply for them.

In terms of comfort, availability and ease of access, train travel remains one of the best forms of public transport. It is particularly popular with seniors and the disabled, because of the accessibility options that most train stations and carriages now provide.

As governments have encouraged more people to use trains for public transport over the years, they have improved those accessibility options. Governments have also provided discounts for specific rail users who may depend on public transport for financial reasons or because they are physically impaired.

Two of those discount cards are:

  • Senior Railcard — which gives seniors access to rail travel discounts
  • Disabled Person Railcard — which gives train travel discounts to people with disabilities

This article will walk you through the process of applying for these discount cards.

Benefits and restrictions of the Senior Railcard

The Senior Railcard is available for any UK citizen who is over the age of 60. It costs £30 per year.

The benefits of the card include:

  • 1/3 off Standard and First Class Anytime, Off-Peak and Advance fares
  • Various discounts with Senior Railcard partners including museums, theatres, sightseeing companies, and hotels

It’s important to understand that the card is not valid when travelling between two stations inside London and the South East area during morning peak time. Also the card can’t be used to obtain a discount on Eurostar tickets, season tickets, some train companies already offering discounts, tickets for charter trains and most London underground and docklands light railway tickets.

Seniors can also purchase a three-year Railcard for £70, giving an additional saving of £20 compared to buying annual cards.

How to Get a Senior Railcard

There are three ways you can obtain a Senior Railcard: online, at a station ticket office or by phone.

  • Online. To buy a Senior Railcard online, the applicant will need a valid passport or a UK driving licence. They will also need a valid debit card or credit card. Then they can simply visit the Senior Railcard website to begin the process. The railcard will then be sent out via the mail within five days. Don’t forget to keep your personal data protected.  Download VPN Android apk and use it when purchasing tickets to prevent your payment information from theft.
  • At the station. A Senior Railcard can be bought at any staffed station ticket office or National Rail-licensed Travel Agent. The applicant can either fill in the application form at the ticket office or download the form and complete it before going to the station. The applicant will need to take one form of identification to prove their identity and age —birth certificate, passport or a UK driving licence are all ideal. They can then register the card online if they wish to renew it via the website at a later date.
  • By phone. Call 0345 3000 250 (07:00-22:00 any day except Christmas Day). Calls are charged at the national rate. Applicants will need a valid passport or UK driving license. The railcard will then be posted out within five days.

Using the Senior Railcard

The Senior Railcard can be used to order tickets via the Internet, phone or at a station ticket booth.

The holder should always carry their Senior Railcard with them while travelling and present it to ticket inspectors if asked.

Disabled Persons Railcard

As with the Senior Railcard, the Disabled Persons Railcard offers 1/3 off rail travel. The card also includes discounts for museums, theatres, sightseeing companies, and hotels.

The Disabled Persons Railcard only costs £20 annually but there are stricter eligibility guidelines which differ depending on a person’s disability.

Determining eligibility is much more complex with a Disabled Persons Railcard. The card is available for anyone who:

  • Receives Personal Independence Payments (PIP).The applicant will need to present a copy of their award letter.
  • Receives Disability Living Allowance (DLA) at the higher or lower rate for the mobility component, or the higher or middle rate for the care component . The applicant will need to supply a copy of their award letter.
  • Has a visual impairment. This requires a copy of the applicant’s Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI), BP1 Certificate (Scotland) or BD8 Certificate for being registered blind or partially-sighted.
  • Has a hearing impairment. Againa copy of the award letter will be needed.
  • Has epilepsy and has repeated attacks despite medication or is prohibited from driving because of epilepsy. They will need a copy of their Exemption Certificate for epilepsy medication and a photocopy of their prescription for drugs in line with the National Society for Epilepsy guidelines or a photocopy of their letter from the DVLA telling them that they are unable to drive.
  • Receives Attendance Allowance or Severe Disablement Allowance. This requires a copy of the award letter.
  • Receives War Pensioner’s Mobility Supplement. This also requires a copy of the award letter.
  • Receives War or Service Disablement Pension for 80% or more disability. This too needs a copy of the award letter.
  • Buys or leases a vehicle through the Motability scheme. The applicant will need a recent copy of their leasing or hire-purchase agreement.

To obtain a Disabled Persons Railcard, they can:

  • Apply online by visiting the Disabled Persons Railcard website to fill in an online form. The applicant will need a scan or photograph of the paperwork proving their disability. They will also need a valid debit card or credit card. Allow five working days for the Railcard to be delivered.
  • Download and complete an application form form from the Disabled Persons Railcard website. The completed form should be sent to:

Disabled Persons Railcard PO Box 6613 Arbroath DD11 9AN

Make cheques and postal orders payable to “Disabled Persons Railcard”. Allow 10 working days for the Railcard to be delivered.

A Disabled Persons Railcard can be used when ordering a ticket via the Internet, phone or at a station ticket booth. Cardholders should keep the card with them during the journey.

Services while travelling for people with impaired mobility

In addition to discounted travel for seniors and the disabled, there is help available at railway stations for people with physical impairments. Most railway stations have staff who can assist anyone with mobility issues as they board or exit trains. There are two ways to obtain this form of help (called travel assistance):

  • By contacting the train company that they will be traveling with, at least 24 hours in advance of the journey. The phone numbers are available on the National Rail website .
  • By completing an online form via the Disabled Persons Railcard website. Passengers can ask for assistance at the origin station, destination station and stations between the two locations.

Help may be available by simply asking at the ticket counter, but that is not always the case, so should not be relied upon.

Some railway stations also have scooters to help people with mobility issues navigate the train station. It is important to understand that only some stations have staff on hand to provide assistance, so it is crucial to book ahead and plan a trip thoroughly.

Northern Rail connects tens of thousands of people to work, leisure, education and more every day in the North of England.

Does the carer go free when traveling with a dependant person?

Kathy Lawrence

That’s a very good question. Finding this sort of information on train company websites can be difficult. The most likely answer is that a disabled persons railcard, which has to be paid for, entitles the holder and one other person to a third off the usual price of fares, as explained here https://www.disabledpersons-railcard.co.uk/using-your-railcard/the-benefits/

It would definitely be worth talking to someone at your local rail company or National Rail to check the situation. Definitely no mention of free travel though, sad to say!

Margarey

Can a 3 year rail card be boought on the phone?

Sadly it looks like the answer is no. This is from the National Rail Enquiries website at https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/times_fares/pr7bb7e80a040002001b255638df2424.asp :

‘Now you can also buy a 3-year Senior Railcard, available only online. It’s great value at £70, saving you an extra £20 on the cost of renewing your 1-year Railcard for three consecutive years.

Please visit the Senior Railcard website for more information.’

The senior railcard website is at https://www.senior-railcard.co.uk/

I managed to do so after explaining that my computer was blocking my application on the last page

An award letter for a hearing impairment?

Julie mills

Hi Been trying to buy my disabled rail card all day no success Not easy site to use

People do seem to be having trouble with this one. I bought a 2-year seniors railcard which was easy enough to order, but of course I’ve had little use of it and it’s nearly at an end. They’ve just sent a reminder to renew! I also found that because I was usually travelling with friends, the 4-for-3 deal gave the same discount anyway.

Mike cross

I just bought a senior rail card last month but regret I have just become disabled can I swop it

I suspect that is unlikely, but your best best is to get in touch directly with the company from which you bought the card.

Mike Thomas Crawshaw

Some local authorities will also offer a discount service. Cheshire East used to provide mine for £27 at local libraries. Shropshire provide it for £9, as long as you choose it instead of a free bus pass!

Thank you for that. Really helpful

david

How do I apply my senior Railcard discount when buying through the Trainline app? It gives no option to do it, as far as I can see.

Margaret Ritchie

Can you use a senior railcard on a Sunday. I’m trying to book a trip Wednesday to Sunday and the Sunday fare is a lot more expensive

Hello Margaret. Probably the best place to find answers is the Senior Citizens Railcard page https://www.thetrainline.com/trains/great-britain/railcards/senior-railcard and specifically the terms and conditions of use https://www.thetrainline.com/trains/great-britain/railcards/terms-of-use#senior . There is also now an app (of course!) which gives you a digital railcard, which might be more helpful. Kathy at When They Get Older.

Where do you enter the senior rail card number to get the discount on National Rail Avanti?

Sarah White

If you live overseas (but receive a British pension) can you still apply for a Senior rail card and a bus pass?

JULII MOXEY

My passport is out of date & I can’t drive so no licence. How can I get a senior Railcard

I’ve checked the application process for the Trainline online railcard, and it does appear you need a UK driving licence, a passport or an EEA card to prove identity. Can only suggest you enquire at your local ticket office.

Simon James Shephard

Can you use a Senior and disabled card together eg 60 plus with hearing impediment to buy a ticket and get 2/3 off ?

June waterson

I am trying to renew my disabled rail card can you help please as itkeeps saying there is a problem with my details

Hello June. I’m sorry but we don’t have direct access to Trainline’s systems. The best way to contact them might be using social media as companies often respond quickly to tweets or possibly Facebook comments. Hope that helps. Kathy at When They Get Older

Arthur Talbot

Hi ,i am British citizen living in South Africa I am 74 years of age .I will be visiting family in the UK for 2 weeks 14 days .Is there any discounted travel that i will be entitled to in tgat 14 dayss be it bus tune or overland rail outdide of peak hours and if so will i be able to purcgase such siscounted travel on an oyster card Any assistance will be appreciated Arthur

Hello Arthur. Thanks for the question. There’s some information about discounted travel in this article https://whentheygetolder.co.uk/quality-of-life/pastimes/travel-and-holidays/days-out/tips-on-affording-an-enjoyable-retirement/ but you either need to buy a discount card that’s valid for a year for train and coach travel, or live in the UK for a free bus or underground pass. It would still be worth having a look at offers from companies such as Trainline https://www.thetrainline.com/information/cheap-train-tickets and London Underground https://tfl.gov.uk/fares/find-fares/tube-and-rail-fares to check the cheapest prices available. Sadly they’re all a bit complex, despite efforts to simplify fares recently. Hope you enjoy your break with your family. Kathy at When They Get Older

Anton Roberts

I am disabled and over 65 so qualify for “both cards” is 30% the most you asre entitled to ??

Yes, I believe it is. But a third off the price of a ticket is still worth while I think.

History of Ulyanovsk

Ulyanovsk in the 17th-19th centuries.

In 1648, by decree of Tsar Alexei Mikhailovich, the fortress of Sinbirsk was founded on the right bank of the Volga River in order to protect the eastern borders of the Tsardom of Russia from the raids of nomadic tribes (Nogai Tatars), as well as to colonize the Volga region.

In the fall of 1670, Sinbirsk was unsuccessfully besieged by the army of Stepan Razin - the Don Cossack, who was the leader of the 1670-1671 uprising, the largest in the history of pre-Petrine Russia. In 1678, 1,579 people lived in Sinbirsk.

In 1729, the coat of arms of Sinbirsk was approved - a white pillar topped with a golden crown in the azure field. In 1780, Sinbirsk was renamed Simbirsk. In 1793, 13,317 people lived in this town.

In 1812, Ivan Goncharov, a famous Russian novelist and critic, was born in Simbirsk. In 1836, Emperor Nicholas I visited Simbirsk and made a lot of orders for the construction of new buildings in the town, especially in its central part. In 1840, the Simbirsk Theological Seminary was opened.

More Historical Facts…

In 1845, a monument to Nikolay Karamzin (1766-1826) was opened - the author of one of the first generalizing works on the history of Russia and a reformer of the Russian literary language, who was born near Simbirsk. Today, this monument erected in Karamzin Public Garden is one of the symbols of Ulyanovsk. In 1848, one of the first libraries in the Volga region was opened in this town - the Karamzin Public Library.

In the summer of 1864, a terrible fire occurred in Simbirsk, which lasted 9 days. Only one fourth of the town buildings survived. In 1867, the merchant Yurgens opened the first bookstore in Simbirsk. In 1870, the future “leader of the world revolution” Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin) was born in Simbirsk. Alexander Kerensky, a prominent Russian politician and statesman, was born here in 1881. According to the 1897 census, 43.3 thousand people lived in Simbirsk.

Ulyanovsk in the first half of the 20th century

From 1908 to 1912, Igor Kurchatov, the future creator of the Soviet atomic bomb, lived in Simbirsk with his parents and studied at the local gymnasium. In 1916, the construction of the Imperial Bridge over the Volga River was completed in Simbirsk. With a length of 2,089 meters, it was the longest bridge in the Russian Empire at that time.

After the First World War and the Russian Civil War, the city’s industry was in ruin. During the war years, not a single building was constructed in Simbirsk, street lighting disappeared, boulevards and parks fell into disrepair, up to a hundred residential buildings were destroyed.

On May 9, 1924, in connection with the death of Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov (Lenin), Simbirsk was renamed into Ulyanovsk, and Simbirsk Governorate - into Ulyanovsk Governorate. Other proposed options for the new name of the city were such as “Lenin”, “Leninsk”, “Ilyich”.

By the end of the 1930s, almost all churches in Ulyanovsk were destroyed or used for other purposes. On the eve of the Second World War, Ulyanovsk was a provincial city with a population of about 110 thousand people. There were no large industrial enterprises, with the exception of the 3rd State Plant named after Volodarsky (Ulyanovsk Cartridge Plant) - one of the oldest defense enterprises in Russia, specializing in the production of cartridges for rifled weapons.

During the Second World War, Ulyanovsk became the place of evacuation of 17 industrial enterprises from the occupied regions and the front line. The Minsk Tank School, renamed the 2nd Ulyanovsk Tank School, was relocated from Minsk, the Mogilev Military Infantry School, which became the Ulyanovsk Military Infantry School, was relocated from Mogilev. In 1942, a medical institute evacuated from Voronezh began to work in Ulyanovsk.

From October 1941 to August 1943, the Moscow Patriarchate was in evacuation in Ulyanovsk, headed by Metropolitan Sergius. From 1942 to 1945, Andrei Sakharov, the future creator of the hydrogen bomb, academician and human rights activist worked at the Ulyanovsk Machine-Building Plant.

On January 19, 1943, Ulyanovsk became the center of the newly formed Ulyanovsk Oblast. From the second half of 1941 to the beginning of 1942, the population of Ulyanovsk, due to the evacuees, doubled and amounted to more than 200 thousand people. By 1945, as a result of re-evacuation, it decreased by 50 thousand and amounted to 152 thousand people.

Ulyanovsk after the Second World War

In the post-war period, Ulyanovsk became an industrial city. In 1953, during the construction of the Volga cascade of hydroelectric power plants, part of Ulyanovsk was included in the flooding zone of the Kuibyshev reservoir. In 1957, the Ulyanovsk airport was built. Since the 1960s, thanks to the high rates of housing and industrial construction, Ulyanovsk began to grow rapidly both in area and in population. On May 5, 1967, the 300,000th resident of the city was born.

In the 1969-1970s, in honor of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Vladimir Lenin, the historical center of Ulyanovsk was built up with modern buildings: the hotel “Sovetskaya”, the House of Artists, the Memorial Center of Vladimir Lenin, the hotel “Venets”, the new railway station Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny, the new river station, the central airport Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny, the central department store, the central bus station, the Palace of Pioneers, the park “Friendship of Peoples”, etc.

With the construction of the Memorial Center of Vladimir Lenin, Ulyanovsk became one of the main tourist centers of the USSR, after Moscow and Leningrad. The city was not closed to foreigners, which distinguished it from many other industrial regional centers, but foreign tourists were not allowed to deviate from the route. On June 1, 1973, the 400,000th resident of Ulyanovsk was born. On April 16, 1982, the population of Ulyanovsk exceeded 500 thousand people.

On June 5, 1983, in Ulyanovsk, the river cruise ship “Alexander Suvorov” crashed into the railway bridge across the Volga (the Imperial Bridge). By mistake of the crew, the ship tried to pass under the non-navigable span of the bridge. As a result, more than 170 people died. The large number of casualties is explained by the fact that at the time of the collision, most of the passengers were in the movie theater and on the dance floor on the upper deck, which was completely destroyed by the collision with the bridge girder.

On July 17, 1987, the 600,000th resident of Ulyanovsk was born. The city’s tourist significance declined sharply after the collapse of the USSR. In 1998, Ulyanovsk celebrated its 350th anniversary.

In the 2000s, there was a discussion about the reverse renaming of the city to Simbirsk, but the residents of Ulyanovsk for the most part did not support this proposal. In 2009, the arches of the old railway bridge were replaced. On November 24, 2009, the Presidential Bridge across the Volga was opened, the second longest in Russia, with a length of about 6 kilometers.

Ulyanovsk - Features

From 1648 to 1780, the name of Ulyanovsk was Sinbirsk, and from 1780 to 1924 - Simbirsk. This name was given to the town by its founder, Bogdan Khitrovo, after the name of the settlement of Sinbir (named after the Bulgarian prince Sinbir), the remains of which were located nearby. In 1924, after the death of Vladimir Ulyanov (Lenin), Simbirsk was renamed into Ulyanovsk.

Ulyanovsk is located in a forest-steppe zone on the Volga Upland, on both banks of the Volga River (Kuybyshev Reservoir). The climate is moderately continental. The average temperature in February is minus 10.4 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 20.2 degrees Celsius. A characteristic feature of Ulyanovsk is the constant winds blowing from the Volga.

This city is a major transport point, lying between central Russia and the Urals. Neighboring regional centers are three to five hours away by car. There are two international airports near the city - Ulyanovsk-Central (ULV) and Ulyanovsk-Vostochny (ULY).

The banks of the Volga in Ulyanovsk are connected by two bridges. The old railway bridge was officially opened in 1916 and was named “Imperial of His Majesty Nicholas II”. In 1917, it was renamed Freedom Bridge. In 2009, it again began to be called “Imperial Bridge”. The new bridge (also called “Presidential Bridge”) was commissioned on November 26, 2009.

Public transport is represented by trams, trolleybuses, buses, and minibuses. In Ulyanovsk tram lines are located exclusively in the right-bank part of the city and trolleybus lines are in the left-bank part. In the last years of the USSR, it was planned to build a subway in Ulyanovsk.

It is a multi-ethnic city. The ethnic composition according to the 2010 All-Russian Population Census: Russians (77.65%), Tatars (12.64%), Chuvash (5.02%), Mordovians (1.4%). The economy of the city is based on the enterprises of the automotive industry, engine building, aircraft building, instrument making, machine building, and metalworking.

Ulyanovsk has a high potential for the development of the tourism industry. The tourist image of Ulyanovsk as “The Birthplace of Vladimir Lenin” is supplemented with some new ones now: “Russian provincial town of the 19th century”, “Homeland of Oblomov”, “Architectural Museum in the Open Air”.

The City Day of Ulyanovsk is traditionally celebrated on the second Sunday in September.

Historical and Memorial Museum of Ivan Goncharov - a magnificent building, which is a historical and architectural sight of Ulyanovsk. In 1812, the famous Russian writer Ivan Goncharov was born in one of its rooms. The exposition occupies all three floors of the building. A separate hall is dedicated to the history of the building itself, in the remaining halls there are thematic exhibitions related to the personality of the writer and his family. There are also halls that house historical collections and a collection of merchant household items. The tower of the building houses the Museum of the History of the Simbirsk Town Clocks. Goncharova Street, 20.

Museum “Simbirsk Classical Gymnasium” . Simbirsk was one of the first Russian cities to introduce secondary education for children. The museum exposition is dedicated to the history of the development of education in the Russian Empire. It is located in a former gymnasium, where Vladimir Ulyanov and Alexander Kerensky studied at one time. Inside, the atmosphere of the 19th century has been recreated. The interiors of classrooms, halls, dressing rooms, and a gym have been restored. The building that houses the museum was constructed in 1790. Spasskaya Street, 18.

In the central part there is a diorama depicting the fire of 1894 in Simbirsk. Lenin Street, 43.

Historical and architectural complex “Simbirsk Fortified Line” . At the time of the foundation of Ulyanovsk, the Simbirsk line protected the Russian land from the raids of nomads from the east. Today, you can find a unique historical and architectural museum here. It features a defensive fortress and an earthen rampart, which were restored based on historical documents and remains found by archaeologists in Simbirsk. The exposition includes examples of Russian weapons, old documents, maps, diagrams, decrees, and a model of a water mill. Leo Tolstoy Street, 43a.

This museum located near the airport Ulyanovsk-Tsentralny has an airfield and 4 halls with exhibits illustrating the history of aviation from the time of the Russian Civil War to the present day. Balalaika Museum - a unique museum with a collection of the rarest balalaikas (a musical instrument very popular in pre-revolutionary and Soviet Russia). The guests of the museum are invited to immerse themselves in the world of village music, to hear the sound of real peasant balalaikas. Here you can also taste tea made from herbs collected in the forests of the Ulyanovsk region. Bebelya Street, 19.

Savior Ascension Cathedral - a picturesque Orthodox church of sky-blue color built in the Baroque style in the 2000s to replace the demolished Ascension Cathedral (albeit in a different place). Ulyanovskaya Street, 2.

Holy Resurrection-Germanovsky Cathedral - one of the oldest churches in Ulyanovsk built in the early 18th century. During the years of Soviet power, it was closed and used as the state archive. In 2003, the building was returned to the Orthodox diocese. Gogolya Lane, 11.

House of Merchant Bokounin - a beautiful monument of wooden architecture, one of the architectural gems of Ulyanovsk. It was erected at the beginning of the 20th century on the territory of the estate of the Ulyanovsk merchant Sergei Bokounin. Part of the premises is occupied by the restaurant “Teremok”. Radishcheva Street, 4.

The Volga River (Kuibyshev Reservoir) - the largest artificial reservoir on the Volga created in the 1950s. The reservoir is 500 km long, with a maximum width of 44 km. Its powerful water resources are used to generate electricity. Due to its gigantic size, it significantly affected the Volga itself, changed the flow regime and began the processes of coastal washout. Home to many species of fish, the reservoir attracts fishing enthusiasts to its shores.
