How to download and play Mario Kart Tour

The latest Nintendo mobile game starts its engines

mario kart tour on nintendo switch

Those of you looking for a quick fix of Nintendo magic have to look no further than Mario Kart Tour , which is now racing onto mobile.

Following the launches of Super Mario Run and Dr Mario - both simplified versions of the classic Nintendo franchises – Mario Kart Tour offers a way to race around classic Mario Kart tracks in those spare minutes on the bus, in the duller part of a meeting, or throughout all of your Tinder dates (we’ve seen you).

There have been countless Mario Kart titles across various Nintendo consoles, from the initial SNES title to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch . But for how to download and play Mario Kart Tour on iOS and Android, here’s everything you need to know.

  • How to download and play Super Mario Run

1. Check your phone (or tablet) can play it

mario kart tour on nintendo switch

Mario Kart Tour will run on iOS and Android smartphones or tablets, so the game won’t be exclusive to certain product ranges – as we saw with the timed exclusivity of Fortnite mobile on Samsung Galaxy phones .

The Mario Kart Tour website does however recommend “a device with 1.5 GB of RAM or more.”

2. Download the app

mario kart tour on nintendo switch

Pretty self-explanatory, but it will depend on your operating system and the device you’re playing on. For iPhones or iPads that run iOS, you’ll need to head to the App Store and search for the title. The full name is “Mario Kart Tour”, and it will be listed by “Nintendo Co., Ltd”, so make sure you don’t get caught out with any false apps or cackling malware . Android users will need to head to the Play Store instead – and all mobile users can pre-order / pre-register to get the game the moment it lands.

You’ll need some space on your phone for the actual app; Super Mario Run took up 205mb of data, so make sure you have enough to actually download the game in the first place.

Get daily insight, inspiration and deals in your inbox

Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.

3. Link your Nintendo account, or create one

Once the app is downloaded, you’ll have to link up with your Nintendo account, which is something you’ll have if you’re already a Nintendo Switch owner, or had a Nintendo Wii or Wii U in your home. If this is your first foray into Nintendo – gasp – you’ll be taken through the steps, and will require a valid email address.

4. Beware of microtransactions

mario kart tour on nintendo switch

Like Super Mario Run, Mario Kart Tour is a free-to-play game, meaning there will be optional microtransactions for cosmetic or gameplay items available (characters, kart parts, etc). If you’re setting up an account for your child , or just don’t trust your own self-control, you can check out the iOS controls or Android controls for this.

5. Get a good internet connection

Nintendo usually ensures its mobile games require an internet connection to play – for security reasons – meaning you won’t be able to crack out a blue shell in the dark depths of the subway. Wi-Fi in a home, office, cafe, or similar will be best, though a decent 4G connection (or 5G !) out and about should do you just fine as well.

Does Mario Kart Tour sync with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Nintendo Switch?

Mario Kart Tour screenshot Yoshi Cup

Best answer: No. Mario Kart Tour and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe don't sync. While they share characters, karts, and items, these are two games that don't have shared progression.Okey-dokey!: Mario Kart Tour for iOS (Free on the App Store)Mamma mia!: Mario Kart Tour for Android (Free on Goggle Play)That's-a Me!: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe ($60 from Amazon)

A-wa-wa-wa-wa-wa!

If you want to sync up your Mario Kart Tour data with your Mario Kart 8 Deluxe progress, you're out of luck. Syncing between different devices would usually mean you can play a game on one device, save your progress, and then continue from that save on another device. This would mean all of the time spent playing in a game progresses you, no matter where you are playing.

In a game like Mario Kart, syncing data would mean having any unlocked items available to you no matter what device you are using. However, syncing data usually only works if you are playing the same game on a similar device. Even then, not all companies offer the function.

Because of the drastic changes made to the progression processes in Mario Kart Tour, there is no syncing between it and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Any unlocks you had in MK8 Deluxe won't transfer. That doesn't mean you can't have a fun time racing in either game or both!

How progression has changed

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Nintendo Switch follows the same gameplay mechanics as the previous Mario Kart games. Progression is based on the player unlocking characters, karts, and new tracks by doing well during a set of races and getting podium placement at the end of a Cup. Receiving first place in a Cup unlocks a character. This goes for each engine class — 50cc, 100cc, etc. Success in one Cup will unlock the next.

Nintendo mixed things up a bit for their mobile app, Mario Kart Tour. This racing app has added Tours where each Tour travels through a real-world city, and new maps have been added inspired by these locations. Each Tour spends two weeks in a city before moving on to the next. It still uses the same progression system to unlock new Cups during a Tour, but at the end of the Tour, the Cup progression resets. So during a Tour, you might unlock eight out of the sixteen Cups available, but as you move to a new city, you will return to race one of the first Cup.

Don't worry; your unlocked characters, karts, and gliders don't reset between tours as the cups do. These items are yours throughout the game and are leveled up with use. These items will help increase your experience gain, which goes toward your new primary progression system, which is tracked by Player Level. This is also persistent through the changing of tours.

It's-a no, sadly so

In most games, where you would be playing a single game on two different devices, data syncing is a wonderful tool for game developers because it can give players a reason to buy a second copy of their game. This is especially true with syncing between a PC game and a mobile platform. You can play at home on one and the other you would take on the road (the Nintendo Switch).

While players might love the idea of having all their Mario Kart 8 Deluxe unlocks available to them on Mario Kart Tour, aside from the gameplay changes, syncing data would mean the mobile game would earn less money. People splurge to collect an item they really want in the Daily Selections shop or buy Rubies to take a chance on that special driver on the Tour. Game development is still a business, and if there was no way for Nintendo to earn money from micro-transactions, we wouldn't be able to play Mario Kart Tour for free.

In the end, while you may not be able to sync up data between the two, you can still enjoy both games.

Mario Kart Tour

Mario Kart Tour is the next Nintendo mobile game heading to smartphones.

Nintendo confirmed Mario Kart Tour today on Twitter, adding that the game is in development and is expected to be released sometime in the next fiscal year, which ends in March 2019. Nintendo describes the game as a “mobile application” but isn’t releasing any more information at this time.

Mario Kart Tour is the fifth game Nintendo is developing for smartphones, following Super Mario Run, Fire Emblem Heroes, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp and Miitomo . Nintendo will release more details when appropriate, the Wall Street Journal’s Takashi Mochizuki said on Twitter .

The publisher also confirmed that Nintendo Switch Online will launch this September. The service, which is equivalent to PlayStation Network or Xbox Live, will cost either $3.99 a month, $7.99 for three months or $19.99 per year.

The service will give Switch owners the ability to play online, a service that has been free up until now but is expected to change once Nintendo Switch Online launches. Switch players will also gain access to compilations of some of Nintendo’s most classic games, including Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight and Dr. Mario. Nintendo is calling these compilations of games from the archive “Classic Game Selection,” but that is subject to change. Nintendo will incorporate leaderboards and multiplayer with Nintendo Switch Online when it rolls out.

Nintendo’s announcements come just after the company announced impressive sales for the Switch, selling more than 14 million units since it first launched in early March 2017.

These Are the Best Platforms Where I Find Quality Free Games to Play

Why i stopped playing wordle and started using this puzzle website instead, did you know canva works as a quick image file converter here's how.

After Nintendo launched the Nintendo Switch Online service in 2018, Switch Online didn't undergo any major changes until October 2021. At that point, Nintendo announced an Expansion Pack for the service that adds more value—at an additional cost.

Let's look at the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack to see what it offers and whether you should sign up.

What Is Nintendo Switch Online?

In case you're not familiar, Nintendo Switch Online is an optional paid subscription service available for the Nintendo Switch system. It grants you several benefits, including access to online multiplayer, cloud backup for your saved data, and a selection of classic NES, SNES, Game Boy, and Game Boy Color titles.

See our full overview of Switch Online for more details.

What Is the Switch Online Expansion Pack?

The Expansion Pack includes everything from the base Switch Online plan, plus some additional benefits. It's available as a separate subscription, meaning that the core Switch Online service is still available and unchanged.

Upgrading to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack (its official name) brings three main benefits:

  • The Nintendo 64 Switch Online app, which lets you play a selection of classic N64 titles.
  • The Sega Genesis (Mega Drive outside of North America) Switch Online app, which similarly includes a set of Genesis/Mega Drive games.
  • The Game Boy Advance Switch Online app, which is the same as the above for GBA titles.
  • Access to DLC packs for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Splatoon 2.

Like the existing NES and SNES libraries included with Switch Online, the N64, Genesis, and GBA titles include quality-of-life emulation benefits . These include save states, which let you stop and pick up from anywhere (not just where the original game had save points).

Nintendo Switch Expansion Pack: Included Games

Your interest in the Expansion Pack will likely depend on how many of its games you want to play, so let's list those next.

Games Included in the N64 Switch Online Library

At the time of writing, the following Nintendo 64 titles are included in the Expansion pack:

  • Banjo-Kazooie
  • Dr. Mario 64
  • GoldenEye 007
  • The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
  • The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
  • Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
  • Mario Kart 64
  • Mario Party
  • Mario Party 2
  • Mario Tennis
  • Paper Mario
  • Pilotwings 64
  • Pokémon Puzzle League
  • Pokémon Snap
  • Pokémon Stadium
  • Pokémon Stadium 2
  • Sin & Punishment
  • Star Fox 64 (Lylat Wars in PAL regions )
  • Super Mario 64
  • Wave Race 64
  • WinBack: Covert Operations (Operation: WinBack in PAL regions)
  • Yoshi's Story

Planned future titles at the time of writing include Mario Party 3, 1080 Snowboarding, and Excitebike 64.

Any games that support local multiplayer, such as Mario Tennis and Star Fox 64, are also playable online with friends. You can't matchmake with random opponents, though.

Games Included in the Genesis/Mega Drive Switch Online Library

The Switch Expansion Pack also lets you play dozens of classic Sega Genesis titles. There are too many to list here; see Nintendo's Genesis Switch Online page for a full list.

Interestingly, several of these games were never officially released for the Genesis in North America. As with the N64 titles, any multiplayer-enabled games (including Gunstar Heroes and Streets of Rage 2) are playable with friends online, but there are no public matches.

Games Included in the Game Boy Advance Switch Online Library

Nintendo's 32-bit handheld, the Game Boy Advance (GBA), is the latest system to get a library for Switch Online Expansion Pack members. Here's a list of included games:

  • Fire Emblem
  • Kuru Kuru Kururin
  • Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
  • Mario Kart™: Super Circuit
  • Metroid Fusion
  • Super Mario Advance
  • Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3
  • Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2
  • The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
  • WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!
  • Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3

Titles set to release in the future include Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, F-Zero Maximum Velocity, and the excellent JRPG Golden Sun. Notable in this pack is Super Mario Advance 4, as it includes levels that were previously only available via a GBA accessory called the e-Reader.

Nintendo Switch Expansion Pack: Included DLC

In addition to the included games, the other major part of the Switch Online Expansion Pack is a few DLC packs for big Switch titles. Let's review what you get. Note that you must own the original title to access its DLC.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons: Happy Home Paradise

Happy Home Paradise is the only paid DLC pack for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. In this expansion, you visit distant islands to design vacation homes for various villagers, completing their dream look with an inventory not limited to what you've collected in the game.

This gameplay is similar to the 2015 game Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer on 3DS. With the Expansion Pack, you have full access, but it's also available to purchase separately for a one-time $24.99 cost.

If you cancel your subscription down the road, you'll retain some items earned for your own home from the DLC, but will lose access to the archipelago where the main vacation home designing takes place. Check out our tips for New Horizons to get the most from the game.

Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion

This single-player add-on for Splatoon 2 allows you to play as an Octoling and take on dozens of missions in a mysterious underground subway.

Compared to the main game's longer missions, these are short, challenging tests of your skill. If you enjoy Splatoon 2's core mechanics and want to push them further, this is the pack for you. When you clear the expansion, you'll also be able to play as an Octoling in Splatoon 2's online multiplayer.

The Octoling Expansion typically costs $19.99. If you let your Switch Online subscription lapse, you won't be able to access this DLC until you either resubscribe or purchase it.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: Booster Course Pass

Instead of announcing the next Mario Kart game, in February 2022, Nintendo announced a huge expansion to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe in the form of the Booster Course Pass. This brings 48 additional courses into the Switch game. Most are from previous Mario Kart titles—including the mobile Mario Kart Tour—but a few are all-new. Nintendo has also added a handful of new racers with the DLC.

Five of the six "waves" of the DLC are available now, with the last set to release by the end of 2023. If you drop your Switch Online membership, you'll have to pay the regular price of $24.99 to access these new courses again.

How Much Does the Switch Online Expansion Pack Cost?

The Switch Online Expansion Pack is only available as an annual membership; there's no option to pay monthly like the base plan. Subscribing to the Expansion Pack costs $49.99 for 12 months, compared to $19.99/year for the regular subscription.

Like the standard Switch Online plan, you can also subscribe to the Expansion Pack using a family membership. This costs $79.99 for 12 months, and allows up to eight Nintendo accounts to enjoy the benefits. Thankfully, you can share a Switch Online subscription with friends who don't live at the same address.

To sign up, open the Nintendo Switch Online tab at the bottom of your Switch's home screen. You can also visit the Switch Online membership page to sign up using your computer. If you've already paid for a Switch Online membership annually, you can get a prorated discount when you upgrade to the Expansion Pack, based on the time remaining in your plan.

New Nintendo Switch Replica Controllers

Note that alongside the Expansion Pack, Nintendo also offers replica N64 and Genesis/Mega Drive controllers. Aside from being rechargeable instead of wired, and including Switch controller buttons like Home and Capture, they're almost identical to the original versions.

These cost $49.99 each, and you must subscribe to any Switch Online plan to purchase them. However, both controllers regularly sell out due to high demand and it's not always clear when more stock will arrive. They're not required to play the new games, but do make it a more authentic experience.

Is the Switch Online Expansion Pack Worth It?

Now that we've covered the details, we can discuss whether the Switch Online Expansion Pack is worth the cost. And at $30 more than the base plan, it's not as easy of a sell.

There are a couple of factors to consider in your decision—chiefly the value of the games included.

If You Only Want Specific DLC or Genesis Games

If you're only interested in one of the DLC packs, it makes more sense to pay $20 or $25 to own that expansion forever, instead of being locked into paying $50 per year to access it.

Similarly, if you're primarily looking for the Sega Genesis games, you can get more retro titles without a subscription by buying Sega Genesis Classics for $30 on the eShop. This doesn't include every game that Switch Online does, but has far more games overall. This compilation also packs in the same convenience features as Switch Online, like rewinding and online multiplayer. It also goes on sale sometimes, offering more value if you're willing to wait for a price drop.

If You Primarily Want N64 Games or GBA Games

The Expansion Pack has more value if you want access to the N64 library. Unless you still have a Wii U and bought N64 games before the Wii U eShop closed, there's no easy way to legally play these games on a modern system—making it a more attractive deal.

At launch, there were some major problems with the quality of N64 emulation on Switch. These included input lag and problems with the visual rendering. Thankfully, most of these problems have been patched up in the time since. One persistent issue is that you cannot remap the buttons for the N64 games, leading to awkward control layouts (unless you buy the sold-out replica controller).

Overall, the emulation options are lousy compared to the options available for graphics, controls, and similar when emulating on PC. However, this collection does pack in some of the top-rated N64 titles. If you've been looking for a way to play these titles, paying for a year to check them out isn't a terrible value.

The same is largely true for the GBA titles. If you're a fan of Zelda, Metroid, Mario, or WarioWare and have never played the GBA entries in these franchises, there's enough value here to be worth a year's subscription at least.

If You Want to Play All the DLCs

If you plan to play the DLCs for Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the Expansion Pack has much more value. Those three packs are valued at $70 total, so if you pay for a year's worth of the service to experience them all, you've gotten a deal.

However, keep in mind that for the Animal Crossing and Mario Kart expansions, you'll probably want ongoing access. The Splatoon 2 DLC isn't something you'll worry about much after clearing it.

The Expansion Pack's Price Is Too High

The Expansion Pack being poorly priced compounds its other problems. PlayStation Plus Essential and Xbox Live Gold each cost just $10 more ($60/year), yet they offer free games, deeper discounts during sales, and much better online infrastructure. Switch Online, meanwhile, offers a pitiful excuse for party chat with its janky app implementation, and has additional classic games arrive at a glacial pace.

The Expansion Pack is worth joining for a year, for most people. That's enough time to experience each of the DLCs and play through some of the Genesis, N64, and GBA games you want to try. After that, you may wish to drop down to the base tier unless Nintendo adds more value.

We'd recommend finding a few friends and subscribing to the shareable plan . That way, you can drop the price down to as low as $10/person/year, which negates some of the above worries.

Switch Online Expansion Pack: Decent, but Expensive

The Switch Online Expansion Pack adds more classic games to the service, but at a high cost. You can get individual DLC and the Genesis games cheaper by purchasing them outright, and the Switch's N64 emulation isn't the best way to play those games. However, there's still enough here to make it worth the price for some, including some solid Game Boy Advance games.

We'd recommend finding a few friends to bring down the cost if you don't have another way to play these games. That's just one method of spending less on Switch games.

Lego Reveals Adorable Little Mario Kart Sets Coming In 2025

The racers will be brick-built, from Baby Mario to Donkey Kong

Mario racers appear as Lego creations.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe , the most popular game on Nintendo Switch , is getting a proper Lego tribute starting next year. The toy brick company announced a line of Super Mario: Mario Kart Lego sets coming in 2025 that will include characters, cars, garages, and more.

With over 62 million copies sold on Nintendo’s handheld hybrid console, Mario Kart 8 remains a monthly best-seller. Kart-related shenanigans also featured heavily in the Super Mario Bros. Movie last year, and Mario Kart 9 , whenever it eventually arrives, is likely to be one of the biggest Nintendo launches ever. So it’s not surprising to see that Mario Kart is the latest frontier for Nintendo’s ongoing collaboration with Lego.

So far, the company has revealed six Super Mario: Mario Kart Lego sets launching January 1, 2025:

72031 – Yoshi Bike – $15 72032 – Standard Kart – $20 72033 – Donkey Kong & DK Jumbo – $35 72034 – Baby Mario vs. Baby Luigi – $30 72035 – Toad’s Garage – $40 72036 – Baby Peach & Grand Prix Set – $80

They are all fairly cheap and small, with the entire batch of sets currently running $220 and around 2,200 pieces. Instead of individual character figures, each racer, from Princess Peach to Baby Luigi, is constructed out of individual blocks. With over 40 characters in Mario Kart 8 alone, there are plenty of additional racers for Lego to eventually sell. Bowser is an obvious missing icon from this initial reveal, though I’m personally hoping for Petey Piranha.

Lego has been branching out into video game franchises more and more lately, especially Nintendo ones. That includes nostalgia-fueled replicas as well as more traditional sets like a $300 Deku Tree from The Legend of Zelda . If Nintendo’s thought of it, Lego is willing to make it out of bricks . Maybe we’ll even get a Lego guy or gal in Super Smash Bros. for the Switch 2 .

Nintendo Is Shutting Down Its Animal Crossing Mobile Game — but It’s Working on a Paid Offline Version to Replace It

Nintendo has announced plans to shut down Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp , seven years after the mobile game launched.

Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp released in 2017 as a mobile-only version of Nintendo’s incredibly popular farming and life sim. IGN’s Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp review returned an 8/10. We said: “Pocket Camp is a true-to-series Animal Crossing adaptation that delivers plenty of reasons to take this camping trip.”

The game goes dark on November 29, 2024, a week after its seventh birthday. Since service began on November 21, 2017, for approximately seven years we have been honored to see everyone's lovely, diverse campsites grow and flourish,” Nintendo said in a statement .

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the many users who have loved Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp.”

After the online service ends, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp will no longer be playable, Nintendo warned. There is a silver lining, however. Nintendo said it’s developing a paid version of the app to which players will be able to transfer their save data. This offline version will be released during the same period as the end of service for Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Nintendo said.

The paid version will have the same basic gameplay and controls as Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp. However, this app will allow the player to use the included features with a one-time purchase, Nintendo said. There will be no in-app purchases or subscription services (like Pocket Camp Club).

It’s worth noting that since this app will not require a continuous online connection, some features that require that connection, e.g. Market Boxes, gifts, and visiting other players' campsites will not be available. Similarly, Leaf Tickets will not be usable, and you will not be able to transfer them to the new app. Expect pricing and a release date in October.

Reaction from fans is mixed, with some expressing sadness that Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp is coming to an end, others seeing the positives in the paid app.

Nintendo has had mixed results from its mobile game efforts, which include Super Mario Run, Mario Kart Tour, and Pikmin Bloom. In 2020, Nintendo was reported to be retreating from the mobile gaming market . That apparent decision came amid the explosive, pandemic-fueled popularity of Switch exclusive Animal Crossing: New Horizons . However, there are a number of successful Pokémon mobile games, such as Pokémon Go , with more in the works .

Animal Crossing fans are already wondering what's next in the franchise, following Pocket Camp's demise and New Horizons seemingly a distant memory at Nintendo. Perhaps a brand new Animal Crossing for the Switch 2 is in the works? given the enormous popularity of New Horizons, it feels like an inevitability.

Nintendo Is Shutting Down Its Animal Crossing Mobile Game — but It’s Working on a Paid Offline Version to Replace It

Nintendo to close down free-to-play mobile Animal Crossing Pocket Camp

A premium edition, however, is on the way

Nintendo has confirmed it is retiring its free-to-play mobile Animal Crossing game, Animal Crossing Pocket Camp on November 28, and replacing it with a "paid version."

Though the company stopped short of revealing what the new game will launch or how much it will cost, it did confirm that the new game will not "contain any in-app purchases" nor an always-on internet connection.

More is expected to be revealed in October 2024.

Players keen to maintain their progress will have their saves transferred over, although the premium in-game currency, Leaf Tickets, will not be available when the premium version launches, so players are advised to spend them ahead of the closure in November.

Subscribed players will continue to be charged until October 28, after which even auto-renewals will be cancelled.

Nintendo similarly pulled the brakes on Mario Kart Tour at the end of last year .

Nintendo May Have Released Mario Kart 8 Deluxe With All DLC On Cart

Is this something we want them to do all the time now?

Nintendo has allegedly made an interesting physical release, that could hint at something they could do in the future.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

As reported by Nintendo Life, some gamers have seen a special copy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe + Booster Course in the cartridge. And what we mean is, they bought the game and found out that the Booster Course isn’t a download code, but is actually inside the cart.

The Booster Course Pass costs $24.99 on the Nintendo eShop. But if you are a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscriber, you can download the Booster Course at no extra cost. And some gamers who get to play Switch Online through the Family Plan, like younger players, may get to play the game and DLC without buying it.

So this is an interesting additional option to play the game. This was also set up for Southeast Asia, so there may be some extraneous circumstances behind this. Did Nintendo decide to make this cart because one or a few of those countries cannot access the eShop, even the US eShop? Or is there an issue with internet access in those places which have this cart?

We would certainly like to hope that Nintendo is testing this out for future potential releases. Now, we know that many games, particularly from third parties, are too big to fit in the capacities of Nintendo’s proprietary card. Nintendo’s formats used to be a big issue that drove these third parties away, but this was not the case for the Switch, because Nintendo was able to successfully set up a functional eShop.

But Nintendo themselves make their games in such a way, that the games will fit on cartridge. For a while, we could also rely on them to put the full game on cartridge too, but as we know, that did change in the latest console generations. Titles like Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart 8 already had DLC on the Wii U, and that was DLC that’s completely different from the amiibo.

So we didn’t really expect that Nintendo would make a cart version of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on the Switch that had the Booster Course in it. Even if the industry seems to be moving more towards digital than physical, perhaps there is a market for this sort of thing? Even if they turn out to be limited releases, and even if the price goes up, we imagine there will be gamers who would still buy physical copies of games with all the DLC and expansions added to them.
