When you arrive in Iceland, you'll transfer to your Reykjavík hotel from Keflavík International Airport (can be arranged upon request). Then, at the arranged time, your driver-guide will pick you up to start your private tour.

Best Private Guide Service:  We searched the Internet and sent out several requests for private guide services. Bragi responded almost immediately and that set the tone for our excellent tour of South Iceland. Jon Thorisson was our guide and we had a great time. He accommodated all of our needs and requests. After a day in Reykjavik on our own, Jon picked us up from our hotel and transferred us to the Reykjavik airport where we took a smaller plane to Hofn to start out grand adventure.

He hired a nice four wheel drive vehicle and off we went to areas where we saw few, if any people. We saw some amazing sights, including the largest herd of reindeer Jon has ever seen. We climbed up areas in our 4WD until the snow blocked the road. We hiked and stopped to refill our water bottles with fresh spring water from streams. We saw and walked among glaciers and empty glacier beds (that had been washed away by the last volcano eruption). We hiked the glacier and sat in an ice cave.

I can’t begin to write down all that Jon showed us and told us. From the visit to a grocery store, the picnics near the cliffs where puffins fly to eating dried fish with lots of butter. We had meals of reindeer carpaccio, smoked puffin and Minsk whale. We stayed at an amazing country inn, Hotel Ranga, who will wake you up at night to see the Northern Lights (which we didn’t get to see).

Jon took care of our every need. We didn’t have to worry about paying for anything. We payed only at the end. He was personable and friendly and felt as if he were our friend at the end of our four days with him.

We are already planning our next trip back!

My husband and I, and another couple, spent 8 days in Iceland with Jon as our tour guide. He was a very safe driver, and made us feel comfortable and well taken-care of. We recommend him without reservation!

I would have no hesitation in recommending Jon and BR Tours. We felt well advised, well looked after and experienced some amazing and unique sights.

We were a group of 6 people traveling and we stumbled upon Jon during a quest to book a private tour. He was punctual, accommodating, knowledgeable and overall a fun person to hang out with during the time we were there. I highly recommend hiring him.

Best Tour Company in Iceland. We spent two days with Jon as part of a group from a cruise ship. I communicated with him via email to set up two tours to different parts of Iceland. Jon was always very prompt in returning emails, answering questions, being flexible in arranging a tour as we asked and being accomodating with time and price. He is so knowledgeable about Iceland and it was very easy to spend two days with him (12 hours the first day and 8 hours the next).

The first day we did the „Golden Circle“ tour and we then went to the South Shore. This was a long day but we saw more in one day than most people would see in three days of doing cruise ship tours. We had a comfortable mini bus that held 16 people and there were 12 of us.

The second day we went to the Reykjanes Peninsula, Blue Lagoon (visit – no swimming) and back into town for shopping. This day there were 11 of us in the mini bus. Jon took people who did not want to shop back to the ship and then came back at a later time to pick the rest of us up in town and took us back to the ship.

Both days, the price of the tour was very reasonable and we saw so much more than on a typical crusie ship tour. We did not have the same people touring with us both day yet all of the people in both groups felt that the tours were well worth the price and they loved the outstanding customer service that Jon provided. We were able to pay at the end of the tour each day with cash or a credit card.

We have organized other tours in other countries and working with Jon and BR Tours was one of the best experiences we have ever had with arranging a tour. Email Jon at BR Tours and let him know what you are thinking about for a tour and he will let you know what is possible, make suggestions and do everything he can to make your time in Iceland an experience you won’t forget. His personality and customer service is far above an excellent rating!!

From my initial contact for booking to our goodbyes at the port at the end of two days, this was a most pleasant experience. BR Tours is a grand and dynamic agency. Our 8 days in Iceland was wonderful. Filled with both a specific plan designed for us because Jon spent time understanding who we are and flexible enough because sometimes we didn’t find out what else we could do until Jon lead us to his discoveries.

I highly recommend taking this tour if you are not renting a car or if you want to avoid the bus. Jon was very helpful and catered to all of our requests and made it an unforgettable tour.

6. HOW MUCH TIME DO YOU NEED TO VISIT ICELAND?

You can enjoy an introduction to this astonishingly varied country with as few as 4 or 5 days in Iceland . That said, for a more immersive experience, it’s best to stay for 1 week to 10 days .

7. WHEN WILL I MEET MY GUIDE?

When you first arrive in Iceland, a private transfer will be waiting to take you to your hotel in comfort and style. You’ll then meet your guide on the second day of your trip, once you’re rested and refreshed after travelling.

This also gives you a full day in Reykjavík to relax and enjoy taking in the city on your own at the start of your adventure.

8. DO YOU TIP TOUR GUIDES IN ICELAND?

Tipping is generally not expected in Iceland, so providing a gratuity is entirely up to you. Of course, if you’d like to show your gratitude with a tip, we’re sure your guide will appreciate it.

Escorted summer tours are possible from May to October. Please note, trips that venture to remote regions, including the Icelandic highlands, have a shorter season, from July to September.

Meanwhile, you can begin a winter package anytime you like between October to April. Although, it’s worth bearing in mind that we don’t offer guided tour packages over Christmas and New Year.

12. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR MY PRIVATE TOUR?

Iceland is renowned for having changeable weather, so you’ll want to make sure that you’re prepared, come rain or shine.

Warm layers, along with a waterproof jacket and trousers, are essential year-round items in Iceland. Having these to hand while you’re out and about means that even if the sun isn’t shining you won’t miss out.

As part of your escorted trip you’ll visit some of the country’s most beautiful natural attractions. Most of the time, a short walk accompanied by your guide, will be the best way to appreciate your stunning surroundings. So we recommend bringing sturdy walking boots or shoes with a good grip for hiking.

During winter, October to April, you’ll need to wrap up warm with extra layers as temperatures can drop below freezing. Meanwhile the summer months, from May to September, bring milder weather. This means that you’ll want to pack sunscreen and some lighter layers.

If you’ll be heading to the renowned Blue Lagoon, or any other geothermal pools, make sure to remember swimwear and sandals. Plus, if you plan to visit any lesser-known hot springs it’s also worthwhile throwing in a quick-drying travel towel.

Day 1 – the spectacular snæfellsnes peninsula.

Your memorable Icelandic adventure begins today. Your personal driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel and take you to explore the natural wonders of the Snæfellsnes peninsula. You will discover several sites including the Eldborg volcanic crater, Gerðuberg basalt columns, Búðir, and Djúpalónssandur with views of the majestic Snæfell volcano.

Day 2 – From Snæfellsnes to Borgarfjörður

From Stykkishólmur, the guide will take you to the south-west of Iceland towards Borgarfjörður, an area rich in heritage as its vast lands served as the setting for many Icelandic sagas. It is also home to gorgeous waterfalls and the Langjökull glacier.

Day 3 – Welcome to Akureyri, the capital of the north

Today‘s itinerary takes you north as your guide drives you through thick farm fields and the Skagafjörður region, which is known for Icelandic horse breeding. You will surely encounter several of these adorably stocky horses grazing in the fields along your way to Akureyri. Before you reach the “capital of the north”, you will take a few detours such as the Vatnsnes peninsula where you can spot seals, and Glaumbær, a turf-house museum, among other sights.

Day 4 – Waterfall and Lake Mývatn

More natural wonders are on the program today! Our first stop is at the impressive Goðafoss, known as “the waterfall of the gods”. Before heading to Mývatn, you will visit several awe-inspiring attractions such as the Dimmuborgir lava field labyrinth and the pseudo-craters of Skútustaðir. You will also get to walk through one of Iceland‘s largest sulphurous hot spring areas, the solfataras of Námaskarð.

Day 5 – Ásbyrgi canyon and Dettifoss waterfall

Before heading east, you will continue exploring the northern part of the country. The peninsula of Tjörnes has many surprising sites in store for you. There is the lush green area of Ásbyrgi, a horseshoe-shaped gorge, and the impressive Dettifoss with a fall so powerful that you will feel the ground shake under your feet.

Day 6 – Eastfjords

Today you discover the East Fjords. Your driver will start towards Reyðarfjörður, where you could visit a small but interesting World War II history museum. Then you‘ll continue along the fjords toward south-east Iceland. At times, the roads are perched high on the mountains giving exceptional views. Finally, you‘ll pass through the tunnel of Almannaskarð to arrive in the Höfn region for an overnight stay.

Day 7 – Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon

Our next stop is Iceland’s scenic south-east. After passing various outlet glaciers belonging to Vatnajökull, Europe’s largest ice cap, you‘ll arrive at the stunning, surreal beauty of Jökulsárlón, a glacial lagoon. This exceptional natural attraction sits at the foot of Iceland’s highest mountain Hvannadalshnúkur. It offers the unique possibility to explore it up close by taking a guided boat tour between the floating icebergs.

Next you get to visit Skaftafell, an oasis surrounded by glaciers and black sand beaches with a broad range of options for spectacular hiking. You‘ll then continue through Kirkjubæjarklaustur, the Eldhraun lava field and the Mýrdalssandur plain before arriving in the Vík area.

Day 8 – Waterfalls and the Golden Circle

Today, your guide will drive along the south coast of Iceland, exploring many breathtaking landmarks such as Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls. You‘ll also explore the highlights of the Golden Circle with its three-tiered Gullfoss waterfall, geyser area where Strokkur ejects its warm water column in the air every 5-10 minutes, and the famous Þingvellir National Park.

After visiting Þingvellir, it is now time to head back to the capital where your private Iceland adventure ends. If you are staying extra nights in the capital, we can help you plan some optional activities. Please contact your travel consultant for more information.

FAQs about our private guided trips

How does a private guided trip work.

All of our private guided tours start in Reykjavík. Here your driver-guide will pick you up from your accommodation and you’ll hit the road.

With your enthusiastic guide leading the way, you will head out into the Icelandic countryside. As you’re immersed in the country’s incredible nature, you’ll learn from your guide about the places you’re visiting.

Once you’ve arrived at your accommodation for the night, you and your guide will say goodbye until the morning. You’ll have time to yourself to enjoy dinner and recharge before the next day’s adventure.

At the end of your tour, you’ll be dropped off back at your hotel in the capital.

Good to know: Our private tour packages do not include hotel stays in Reykjavík at the start or end of the tour, or a transfer from the airport as standard. If you’d like us to arrange this for you, please let us know in the ‘Special requests’ box at checkout.

When will I meet my guide?

You’ll get to meet your guide for the first time when they collect you from your hotel in Reykjavík. Over the course of your trip, you’ll have the chance to get to know them and swap stories and jokes!

What language will my guide speak?

Guidance is in English as standard, although if you would like a guide that speaks a different language, please let us know in the ‘Special requests’ box at checkout.

We can’t guarantee that a guide that speaks a language other than English will be available for your selected tour dates, but we’ll do our best to honor your request.

It’s normally possible to book a guide that speaks Spanish, French, Italian, German, Dutch, or a Scandinavian language. Note that there may be an additional charge for a non-English-speaking guide.

Should I tip my guide?

In Iceland, tipping is not commonplace in restaurants, hotels, taxis, and the like.

That said, if your guide goes above and beyond to make your tour extra special, they would graciously receive a tip. Just know that it’s not expected, so it’s totally up to you.

Can I customize my private tour?

You can customize your trip to Iceland with extra days in Reykjavík at the start or end of your trip. This is your chance to pack in day tours and activities like snowmobiling and ice caving.
