San Diego Zoo is San Diego Safari Park’s sister, located 56 km (35 miles) away.

The travel time between the two wildlife destinations is approximately 45 minutes. 

This combo ticket is popular amongst tourists who love wildlife and are in the region for at least two days. 

This ticket helps you save 20% on the ticket costs and gets you one entry into the San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park and San Diego Zoo.

You can visit the same attraction twice if you don’t want to try the second location.

The San Diego Safari Park in the San Pasqual Valley area of San Diego, California, near Escondido.

It is 56 km (35 miles) northeast of the San Diego Zoo near Balboa Park in San Diego.

Depending on the time of the day, it takes 45 to 60 minutes to travel from the Zoo to Safari Park.

You can reach the park by car or public transportation.

The nearest bus stop Highway 78 & Safari Park Outside Gat e is 1.2 km (0.8 miles) from the park. Board the bus 371 to reach the nearest bus stop and take a cab to get to the Safari Park.

Amtrack Railway Service is a better option if you plan to visit a wildlife attraction from another city, such as Los Angeles.

At 43 km (27 miles), Oceanside Amtrak Station is the closest station to San Diego Safari Park. 

From Oceanside, you must board the light rail service called Sprinter to get to Escondido. 

After 53 minutes and 14 stops, you must get down at Escondido Transit Center .

From Escondido Transit Center, you can take a taxi.

If you wish to travel by car, turn on Google Maps and get started.

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s general parking costs US$20 per day. 

Preferred parking (a spot closer to the Safari entrance) is US$18 extra, which means you pay US$38 for parking your vehicle. 

Credit cards, debit cards, or cash are accepted. 

There are numerous parking garages around the safari park.

San Diego Zoo Safari Park, including holidays, opens at 9 am throughout the year. 

During the summer months of April to August, when the park gets lots of visitors, it closes at 7 pm, and the rest of the year, at 5 pm. 

Visitors need at least four to five hours to explore San Diego Zoo Safari Park to satisfaction. 

If you plan to explore the bare minimum – walk in, go on the Africa Tram at the Safari Park, and step out – you need around 90 minutes.

Some visitors wonder if they can shorten their visit by driving through the safari park. 

Unfortunately, that’s impossible because San Diego Zoo Safari Park is a walk-through sanctuary.

Note: During peak summer months, the queue for the Tram ride can be long, leading to longer waits. 

It is best to visit San Diego Zoo Safari Park when it opens at 9 am because the animals are most active during the first half of the day. 

As the day gets hotter, animals tend to look for shade.

Heat can also affect your experience at the Safari Park, so a fair-weather day is recommended.

On Weekdays, expect the longest lines at San Diego Safari Park between 11 am and 1 pm; on weekends, it is between 11 am and 3 pm.

San Diego Safari Park is most crowded from June to August and during school vacations.

Kids free days

In October, every child aged three to 11 years gets free admission to San Diego Safari Park as long as a paying adult accompanies them. 

Only kids aged 12 and above need to purchase tickets this month. 

The animals at San Diego Safari Park are divided into 11 primary areas, which you can walk around and explore.

You can interact with the wildlife at the Park in many exciting ways.

Africa Tram

The Africa Safari is a 30-minute guided tour on an open-air tram.

The tram takes a 4 km (2.5 miles) long route through San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s field habitats, and visitors get to wild animals such as giraffes, rhinos, elephants, antelopes, etc.

African Tram Safaris start from the African Outpost, a 20-minute walk from the attraction entrance. 

The Tram trips start at 10 am and continue till 45 minutes before the park closes. 

The African Tram Safari is free with the regular San Diego Safari Park ticket .

To avoid waiting in queue to board the safari tram, be at the African Outpost in San Diego Safari Park before 11 or after 3 pm. 

At 11.45 am, the Tiger Keepers at San Diego Safari Park conduct a training session with the animals at the Sambutan Longhouse. 

This keeper talk is a fantastic opportunity to meet the San Diego Safari Park’s tigers up close. 

Since the talk is popular, plan to arrive at least 20 minutes early for the 15 minutes long Tiger Keeper Talk. 

The majestic animal gets a brief physical visual examination by their caretakers and lots of treats. 

The San Diego Safari Park Animal Ambassador Stage is an open platform for showcasing different animals. 

Visitors get a chance to get within a couple of feet of animals that aren’t available in an exhibit. 

The stage is at Safari Base Camp close to the park entrance, and there are two shows daily – first at noon and the last at 4 pm. 

If you are lucky, you may interact with the massive python ‘Julius Squeezer,’ cheetah, Kestrel hawks, or the high-jumping servals and caracals.

At the Nairobi Station, visitors get close-up views of some of the smaller animals at San Diego Safari Park.

Don’t miss out on Robert, the safari’s interactive digital zebra.

The Animal Care Center houses the baby animals and is also at Nairobi Station.

Expect some waiting time when baby lions or cheetahs are cared for at the center. 

Petting Kraal

Open from 10 am to 4.45 pm, the Petting Kraal is an excellent opportunity for your kids to interact with the Safari Park’s friendly goats.

Kids can feed the Pygmy, Nubian, and Boer goats and have fun. 

At Lorikeet Landing, visitors can engage with a colorful rainbow of parrots from 10 am to 3.45 pm.

The entrance to the exhibition is free, but the nectar you feed the parrots is for sale. 

A small bowl of nectar can get these parrots to land on you and make for beautiful, funny photographs. 

At Lemur Walk, open from 9 am to the Safari Park’s closing time, visitors get to spend time with the Lemurs. 

You walk along a path inside the habitat as ring-tailed lemurs hang around in the trees or walk with you. 

Only visitors over five years of age are allowed. 

The 20-minute Frequent Flyers Bird Show at San Diego Safari Park is scheduled twice daily – at 12 noon and 2 pm. 

The exciting show is perfect for a quick break mid-way through exploring the park. 

Visitors see exotic birds like owls, parrots, and large vultures flying just inches above your head. 

The Training Talk happens in the amphitheater between Gorilla Forest and African Woods.

It is an opportunity to get a closer look at free-flight bird training as the birds prepare for the famous Frequent Flyers show. 

Most people ignore this show, which means you can get the front seat row. 

Shiley’s Cheetah Run

San Diego Zoo Safari Park’s Cheetah Run is held once a day, at 3.30 pm.

You see an agile Cheetah run down a 100-meter (330-foot) long track and reach its top speed of nearly 112 km (70 miles) per hour.

It is better to be at the spot 15 minutes earlier because it is a massive hit with visitors.

Safari Park Gardens

If you love greenery, check out Safari Park’s World Gardens, which has thousands of plants representing geographical areas worldwide. 

Our favorite gardens are Baja Garden, Old World Succulent Garden, Epiphyllum Trail, Bonsai Pavilion, and California Nativescapes Garden.

Conservation Carousel

The Conservation Carousel is at the Safari Base Camp and costs US$6 per person for an all-day bracelet.

It is a good entertainment option for kids, with 60 reproductions of rare or endangered animals that rotate around an axis. 

Kids can choose their favorite animals, such as giraffes, rhinos, zebras, cheetahs, etc., to ride on. 

It is open from 10 am until the Safari Park closes. 

San Diego Zoo Safari Park is very kid-friendly, and more than half of the visitors on any given day are children.

Besides the animal exhibits, which are always a hit, many activities and experiences are designed for children. 

Village Playground

The Village Playground is designed like an African village, next to the Petting Kraal in Nairobi Village.

The interactive play area is open from 9 am onwards. 

Savanna Cool Zone

Samburu Jungle Gym

Also known as the Camp Play area, this spot is part of the lush wooded landscape of Tiger Trail.

Stroller Rentals for kids: San Diego Zoo Safari Park offers strollers for rent on a first-come, first-serve basis. The daily charge for a single stroller is US$16, and a double stroller is US$20. 

Because of some odd zoning rules, the Safari Park is in San Diego, referred to as the San Diego Safari Park.

Animal Encounters: Watch Feedings, Ask Questions, and Get Interactive

Tiger keeper talk.

Learn about Sumatran tigers at the Sumatran Longhouse located on Tiger Trail. One of the tigers’ keepers will tell you everything you want to know about these fabulous animals. Talks take place at 11:45 a.m. every day that the park is open.

Animal Ambassador Stage

Get face-to-face with one of the park’s animal ambassadors in the Safari Base Camp. This interactive program lets you get up-close-and-personal with an alligator, cheetah, or other exotic and rare animal. The animal trainers encourage you to ask your burning questions about the species and their habitats. This experience takes place twice daily, one at 9:30 a.m. and one at 2:30 p.m. Other animal encounters take place in the Gorilla Forest at 12:30 p.m. and in the African Outpost at 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. daily.

Cheetah Run

Witness the fastest mammal alive light up the racetrack at the Cheetah Run. Situated near the Lion Camp this jaw-dropping experience is included with the price of admission. You’ll sit back and relax as one of the park’s cheetahs takes off down a 330-foot straight track allowing it to really stretch its legs as it reaches top speeds of 70 mph.

Hanging Out in Nairobi Village

This area of the park offers several animal encounters and unique experiences at various times throughout the day including the Petting Kraal, Lorikeet Landing, and Lemur Walk.

Petting Kraal

Let your children meet the park’s littlest residents at the Petting Kraal where they can brush and stroke gentle goats. This takes place twice daily – at 10 a.m. and 4:45 p.m.

Lorikeet Landing

Feed colorful rainbow lorikeets at Lorikeet Landing at 10 a.m. or 3:45 p.m. For a small fee you can purchase nectar, and these vibrant birds will land on your hand to get their fill. This experience isn’t recommended for skittish children as it can be a little overwhelming for them.

Have you ever wanted to get up-close-and-personal with a lemur? The Lemur Walk is an immersive experience where you’ll walk along a pathway through this animal’s natural habitat to catch these endearing primates living their best lives. Watch them as they socialize with one another, groom each other, jump around, climb trees, and even sunbathe. This activity has a minimum age requirement of 5 years old.

The Butterfly Effect

One of the most anticipated annual events at the park is the Butterfly Walk. From the end of March to the beginning of May thousands of gorgeous butterflies displaying all colors and sizes fill a greenhouse in Nairobi Village. It’s a joy to walk through as these winged creatures flit across the space. You can easily identify each with the handy identification guide provided to you. Priority butterfly viewing is available at an additional cost. You can get tickets at the Priority Ticket booth. You can also purchase a special treat to have these little guys eating out of the palm of your hand.

Tip: Wear bold and bright colors on the Butterfly walk to invite one of the butterflies to perch on your shoulder.

It’s Not Included – But It’s Worth the Additional Cost

While there are a plethora of free activities and encounters that you can experience at the park, there are also a host of extra-cost activities, experiences, and tours to choose from. They range in price from moderate to expensive, but don’t let the price run you off. The proceeds are used to maintain the park and continue to provide the animals with the best care possible.

Conservation Carousel

A perfect attraction for kids and playful adults, the Conservation Carousel is a classic carousel with 60 replicas of wild animals, many you’ll find in the park like giraffes, rhinos, cheetahs, and zebras. Hop on your favorite animal and enjoy the ride as you listen to the cheerful music. You get unlimited rides for just $6; this attraction is open from 10 am to closing time.

Balloon Safari

Fly high in the sky with the Balloon Safari experience, this tethered helium balloon launches 400 feet into the air giving you a view typically reserved for out winged friends. Designed to imitate the hot air balloon tours of the Serengeti, you’ll spend 10-12 minutes enjoying aerial views of the various animal habitats. As the price of this activity varies, you’ll have to inquire at the park to find out the cost. The best times to fly are at 9 am and 12 pm.

Caravan Safari Adventures

Classic caravan safari adventure.

Feel like you’re on an actual safari in the open fields of Africa with the park’s classic Caravan Safari Adventure. It lasts two-hours. You’ll travel in the back of a covered, open-air safari truck as you explore at least two of their field enclosures. This experience allows you to get up-close with the mammals and birds native to Asia and Africa, plus offers an opportunity to feed the giraffes.

Age Minimum: Must be at least 8 years old Price: $125 and up

GSD Note: This tour is also available as the Caravan Safari Deluxe which simply means you get more time out on the Safari and visit more enclosures. It lasts 3.5 hours, and the cost increases to $175 and up. The age minimum is 8 years old.

Caravan Safari Twilight

This experience is identical to the classic Caravan Safari Adventure except that it takes place at twilight. You’ll enjoy cooler temperatures and beautiful evening light vistas. Tours that take place at this time of day usually see increased animal activity. They are only available during certain months, so be sure to call ahead.

Caravan Safari Kids

Designed especially with kids in mind, the Caravan Safari Kids kicks off with an animal presentation and an opportunity to meet on the park’s animal ambassadors up-close. Several hands-on activities are provided throughout the tour, and a knowledgeable guide will help your children discover just how similar humans and animals really are.

Note: All animal interactions and feeding opportunities are subject to the animals’ accessibility and disposition at the time of the tour.

Cheetah Safari

Perhaps one of the coolest experiences at the park, the Cheetah Safari, includes reserved trackside seats at the Cheetah Run where you’ll watch a lightning-fast cheetah whoosh by you as it chases a mechanical lure just a few feet away. Before the big chase you’ll relax in your VIP seating area as you get to enjoy an up-close-and-personal interaction with a different African animal.

After the race, both cheetah and trainer will come over to your section for an exclusive meet-and-greet experience where you can ask any questions and snap some photos. This is a one-hour activity that you must call ahead to experience, as it’s only available on select days and times.

Cart Safari Africa

A one-hour tour, you’ll travel in the back of a cart through the Africa enclosure as a knowledgeable guide educates you on the park’s history and answers any questions you have about the animals who inhabit that area. You’ll get great photo opportunities and have the chance to watch one of the African animals enjoy a delicious treat.

Minimum Age: Available for all ages Price: $54 and up

Cart Safari Asia

This one-hour tour takes you through the Asia enclosure via cart as a professional guide provides you a deeper understanding of the animals that inhabit the space. It’s a great opportunity to get some incredible photos of the animals, and also includes a chance to watch one of the animals receive a tasty treat.

Flightline Safari

If you’re looking for a thrill, Flightline Safari is just the activity for you. Soar across the park in a comfortable and secure safety harness 130 feet above the ground. You’ll enjoy a birds-eye-view of the park’s animals including giraffes and rhinos. This activity includes use of safety equipment, a flight orientation, interpretative tour, and a ride on two ziplines.

The Fledging zipline prepares you for the ultimate ride on the exhilarating Flightline zipline.

You’ll get exceptional views of the Safari Park as you zip roughly 2/3 of a mile before landing close to the campground at Kilima Point. You can also record you flight for an additional cost with their high-definition helmet cams. This activity lasts one hour including the training, test flight, and final flight, and tickets must be purchased in advance.

Jungle Ropes Safari

Are you the daring type? If so, the Jungle Ropes Safari gives you a unique opportunity to walk, balance, climb, and swing your way through a ropes course testing your jungle skills at every turn. You’ll strap into a safety harness and receive instruction from a trained staff member before you set out on your own, or with your group, using the Smart Belay system to travel the trails at your own pace. You’ll attempt to navigate aerial tightropes, cross rope bridges, negotiate swinging log steps, and cross moving platforms among several other thrills.

There are three different courses to choose from. Try one, or try them all. The choice is yours. Trained staff will be available along the way, but this is a self-guided/paced activity. For even more excitement, add the Flightline Safari to your adventure. This activity lasts 90 minutes including training. Tickets must be purchased in advance.

Behind-the-Scenes Safari Experiences

The Safari Park offers several Behind-the-Scenes Safari experiences where you get the chance to get an in-depth look at some of your favorite animals. Below is a quick breakdown of each one.

Butterflies & Friends

This is an exclusive interactive and guided BTS experience and the park’s most popular attraction during spring. Starting in the morning, you’ll visit with Rodrigues fruit bats where you’ll talk with one of their keepers to learn all about these furry high-flying creatures.

This is followed by an introduction to the Butterfly Jungle where you’ll meet its thousands of beautifully colorful inhabitants without the crowds. Afterward, you’ll enjoy exclusive access to Lorikeet Landing where you’ll interact with a few ambassador animals and their trainers. This two-hour walking tour is only available during the Spring season.

Elephants and Friends

Take a two-hour guided tour through Elephant Valley where you’ll learn all about these massive, yet gentle animals. You’ll get an up-close animal encounter with one of their animal friends in addition to viewing the elephants from a private viewing area as you learn what it takes to care for these magnificent animals.

Roos & Mates

Head down under to visit your favorite hopping marsupials in the newest addition to the Safari Park – Walkabout Australia. You’ll get an up-close encounter with some of the park’s newest mates while learning how the park provides for these cute creatures, as well as a visit to their off-exhibit homes. You will also have the opportunity to feed one of these Roo’s during this two-hour tour.

Tiger and Friends

Get a rare look at the lives of the magnificent tigers in Tiger Trail and how their incredible trainers care for them. You’ll journey through the park’s multispecies field enclosures viewing the various Asian and African animals that inhabit them on this two-hour tour. It includes a visit to the off-exhibit tiger keeper area, and an animal friend encounter.

Cheetah and Friends

On this two-hour tour you’ll get the chance to meet one of the park’s cheetahs at the Benbough Amphitheater while learning about their conservation efforts. As you journey around this multispecies enclosure, you’ll learn how these incredible animals are cared for and view a variety of Asian and African animals.

Lion and Friends

Explore Lion Camp on this two-hour guided tour where you’ll learn how these powerful animals are cared for and enjoy an up-close experience with an animal friend. You’ll also get the chance to visit the off-exhibit lion keeper area, and to explore the multispecies field enclosures featuring various Asian and African animals.

Rhino Rescue Center

Spend two hours exploring the state-of-the-art Nikita Kahn Rhino Rescue Center. This 3.5 acre facility is dedicated to the conservation of white rhinos. You’ll learn about the park’s assisted reproductive techniques, and how they’re fighting to end their extinction. It also includes a tour of the multispecies field enclosures. This tour is only available on select days seasonally.

Veterinary Medical Center

Get an inside look at the Paul Harter Veterinary Medical Center and learn about its extensive history of veterinary services while touring this high-tech facility for two hours. You’ll see how they provide the park’s animals with the best care, and why they are industry leaders in wild animal care. This activity is only available on select days seasonally. 

Spend the Night at the Safari Park

Roar & Snore Safari provide you and your loved ones with a truly unique experience spending the night at the Safari Park. These once-in-lifetime-style experiences includes an afterhours look the park’s wildlife, guided walks, camp activities, and a campfire program. They also include dinner, an evening snack, and breakfast in the morning.

All Ages Roar & Snore

This guide gives four family-friendly and fun ways for camping and glamping in the county. Plus to get started, here are some best practices when camping and tips on what to avoid when camping from community guides reporter Maura Fox . 

In San Diego County there are three state beaches where people can camp in designated areas. Beach guests must make reservations and follow certain rules, such as campfires not being allowed on the beach. Local state beaches are open throughout the year, but check-in and check-out times vary. Pets are permitted, but not on the beach. For reservations call (800) 444-7275 or go to go to reservecalifornia.com .

San Elijos State Beach in Cardiff has about 144 spaces where visitors can set up tents and park RVs and trailers. Campsite rentals start at $50 and go up to $75 for an RV hookup nearest to the ocean. There is also a grunion-run group camping option for up to 10 vehicles and 40 people. This group camping area includes a 50 amp electrical outlet RV hookup for water and sewage, a fire pit, a barbecue grill and six picnic tables for $400 per night. 2050 South Coast Highway 101, Cardiff. Silver Strand State Beach in Imperial Beach only allows RVs and trailers with flushable toilets and a running water system. No vehicle campers or tents are permitted, and no one can sleep outside. Fires are allowed in designated areas and portable fire containers and camp stoves must be within the campsite and raised at least six inches off the ground. Campground rates range from $65 to $85 per day. 5000 Highway 75, Coronado. (619) 435-5184

South Carlsbad State Beach has roughly 233 spaces for RV hookups that range in cost from $50-$140, with higher-priced spaces closest to the Pacific Ocean. There is also a group campsite at Pelican Point that hosts up to 40 people and 10 vehicles. Tents and trucks with camper shells are permitted. Fires are allowed in designated fire rings on site and campfires on the beach must be made with propane and butane. Wood fires are restricted on the beach. There are also public restrooms, lifeguard stations and water faucets throughout this state beach. 7201 Carlsbad Blvd., Carlsbad. (760) 438-3143

San Diego County’s Parks and Recreation Department manages 10 parks where camping is allowed. Each park offers different amenities, including tent sites, cabins and RV parking. Reservations vary in price, based on the park and camping choice. All county campgrounds have coin-operated showers, near a ranger station. Cabins range from $50-$100, tent campsites start at $22 and RV hookups cost between $27-$33 for the day. Each park is open year-round, except for Agua Caliente County Park and Vallecito County Park, due to high temperatures in the summer. Reservations can be made up to one year in advance at reservations.sdparks.org/reservation/camping or by calling (858) 565-3600.

Here are the 10 county camping park locations with a brief description.

Agua Caliente County Park in Julian offers camping from Labor Day through Memorial Day. There are seven cabins for rent with two queen bed frames (mattress and bedding not included), a table, sink, bathroom and a campfire ring outside. Visitors can also reserve areas to set up campsites with tents and RV hookups. 39555 Great Southern Overland Stage Route of 1849, Julian. (760) 765-1188

Dos Picos County Park in Ramona is open throughout the year. Camping options include tent sites, partial RV hookups and ADA-accessible cabins. Some amenities include coin-operated showers, restrooms, picnic tables and a fire ring. Plus there is a nearby lake for fishing. 17953 Dos Picos Park Road, Ramona. (760) 789-2220

Guajome Regional Park in Oceanside has eight miles of Pacific Ocean camping space. There are 33 RV and tent campsites and one cabin with a double bed (mattress and bedding not included), two sleeping cots, a bathroom, table and chairs, a kitchen and a porch. There are also outdoor fire rings, picnic tables available and restrooms. 3000 Guajome Lake Road, Oceanside. (760) 724-4489

Lake Morena County Park in Campo allows visitors to launch and drive motorized boats. Campers can also fish at this lake. There are 10 cabins available for rent. Each cabin offers one double bed  (mattress and bedding not included), two-fold-out cots, a bathroom, tables, chairs and a porch. This 3,250-acre park also has picnic areas, hiking trails, a fire ring and restrooms.  2550 Lake Morena Drive, Campo. (619) 579-4101

Oakoasis County Park in Lakeside is meant for camping with a large group with tent camping sites available. The park also has a cabin for rent, a large firepit, outdoor seating, a covered picnic area and restrooms. 12620 Wildcat Canyon Road, Lakeside. (619) 561-0580

Potrero County Park is near the U.S.-Mexico border and the town of Tecate, Mexico. Visitors can stay in a tent, RV or in one of two cabins with wooden bed frames, small tables and basic temperature controls. There are also fire rings and picnic tables outdoors. 24800 Potrero Park Drive, Potrero. (619) 478-5212

Sweetwater Summit County Park in Bonita gives campers the option to reserve a tent campsite, RV and trailer hookup station and a horse camping site. This 500-acre park has a seasonal splash pad, a 13-station exercise course, 15 miles of hiking trails and fishing areas at the nearby Sweetwater Reservoir. 3218 Summit Meadow Road, Bonita. Tijuana River Valley Regional Park is the county’s newest park campground and it links over 20 miles of hiking trails. It has 51 tent and yurt-style campsites. Yurts are covered camping spaces that fit up to 10 people and have bedframes, windows and doors. Currently, the campground is temporarily closed due to work being done on the park’s hiking trails. Jessica Geiszler, county parks and recreation department marketing and public outreach manager, said the campground will reopen sometime later his summer. 1942 Monument Road, San Diego. 619-205-1680

Vallecito County Park in Julian offers camping from Labor Day through Memorial Day. Visitors can set up tents and RVs at 44 campsite locations. This 71-acre park has very few amenities except for barbecue stoves, fire rings and a few water stations. 37349 Great Southern Overland Stage Route of 1849, Julian. (760) 765-1188

William Heise County Park in Julian gives guests options to reserve a tent, RV or group campsite. This park also has 14 cabins that vary in size, with each cabin containing a table with chairs, basic temperature control and bed frames without mattresses. Outside there are picnic tables and fire rings. 4945 Heise Park Road, Julian. (760) 765-0650

Combine traditional camping with upscale and glamorous amenities — a pool, electricity or a comfy bed and pillow inside a tent — and that equals glamping. Here are three online marketplaces that offer glamping options and reservations with listings in San Diego County. Prices vary based on the time of year reserved, similar to hotels.

Glamping Hub lists properties specializing in glamping experiences. On a recent search, there were over 60 listings in the county ranging from small wood cabins in Julian to a tent with various bedroom furniture in Vista.

Hipcamp offers campsites and private RV parking. On a recent search on Hipcamp, there were over 30 places locally including a tent for about six people with a wooden bed, carpeting, a telescope and various ranches for RVs parking and hookups.

Airbnb also lists places to rent from hosts that offer glamping-inspired lodging based on the time of year. For example, two hosts offer fancy tents and vintage trailers in Ramona, where each listing says it’s near a vineyard. 

Kampgrounds of America is another option for glamping. It’s a campground organization with locations across the country, including San Diego Metro KOA Resort in Chula Vista. This location offers several amenities such as an outdoor pool, hot tub and sauna, WiFi, bike rentals, a cafe, a children’s playground, a basketball court, a ping pong table, a meeting room with kitchen and a two-acre grass field. There are areas to set up tents, rent cabins and park RVs. 111 N. Second Ave., Chula Vista. (619) 427-3601

There is also a glamping option in Mission Bay at Campland on the Bay. This aquatic resort along the bay offers RV and tent camping with approximately 560 campsites on 40 acres of land. Amenities include showers, a laundry facility, swimming pools and spas, a game room, a market to purchase food and drinks, restrooms, a bar and cantina, free WiFi, various sports courts and a 124-slip marina with a boat launch. San Diego Safari Park

The San Diego Zoo Safari Park offers special packages allowing the public to sleep over at its animal sanctuary and observe nearby wildlife such as elephants and giraffes. Known as Roar and Snore Safari, the attraction also provides access to special behind-the-scenes hikes for exploring nighttime and morning wildlife activities. Campers also get to gather around a campfire and cook s’mores, and during certain days from March through May, guests will experience the park’s Butterfly Jungle. 13 San Diego Zoo vs Safari Park Differences-Which is Best?

Which is better to visit, San Diego Zoo or Safari Park? I’ve compared more than a dozen factors for you including park size, ticket price, what’s included, animals, tours, and more to help you make up your mind.

Visit San Diego Zoo instead of Safari Park if you can’t see both. They’re each worth it. But the Zoo’s a better deal because parking’s free. You’ll see more animals in less time. It’s closer to downtown, has better food & weather. However, go to Safari Park if you want different, unique experiences.

As a long-time member of San Diego Zoo Global (I remember when Safari Park was Wild Animal Park), and a certified animal nut I know that a quick summary is not going to convince you one way or the other. So I’ve gone into detail in this article about the major differences between both zoological parks. Because your time is precious and you deserve to have a wonderful time in San Diego.

Safari Park’s Bigger

Safari Park is much larger than the San Diego Zoo. The raw land area figures are:

• Safari Park is 1800 acres
• Zoo size – approximately 100 acres

But don’t let the HUGE size of Safari Park make you think that it’s too much to see in one day.

You’d think that if it takes 3 to 4 hours to see the 100-acre Zoo, it should take a LOT longer to see the 1,800 acre Safari Park. Right? But the San Diego Zoo Global FAQ” says, “we recommend a minimum of three to four hours to see some of the Zoo and a minimum of four to six hours to experience a portion of the Safari Park.”

Why recommend such a short period of time to see Safari Park?

Because the area accessible to the walking public in Safari Park is only about 20% larger than the Zoo . I outlined the perimeter of the public areas for both the Zoo and the Safari Park on Google Maps. And then I let the Google Maps tool calculate the two areas.

• San Diego Zoo Walking Areas = 65.44 acres (2850575.23 ft²)
• Safari Park Walking Areas = 79.2 acres (3,451,313.63 ft²)

Safari Park is very large. Half of the land is set aside in perpetuity for habitat conservation for local wildlife and plants of the highly endangered Southern California Coastal Sage Scrub .  

And of the remaining 900 acres, only about 80 are open for the public to walk in. The other 780 acres are their famous large field exhibits that are only accessible via guided truck tours or the Africa Tram. Or they are closed to the public entirely.  Safari Park (San Diego Wild Animal Park) was established as a breeding and conservation facility and the land use reflects this. 

Ticket prices at the gate for both San Diego Zoo and Safari Park are equal. The major difference between the two is that parking is free at the Zoo. At Safari Park there’s a parking fee.

San Diego Zoo’s More Worth Visiting

San Diego Zoo tickets are a better deal. There are a greater number of exhibits featuring animals and plants from all over the globe and there are more “rides” free with your admission. But Safari Park is well worth a visit also because it’s not the usual zoo experience. It feels more spacious. You wander through the animals’ habitats rather than observing them in cages. FREE PARKING . Parking is free at the San Diego Zoo. I suggest you get there early in the morning because otherwise, you might be parking rather far out in the free parking area. If for some reason you are arriving later (maybe the Summer Nighttime Zoo?), there’s overflow parking by the Navy hospital. A free shuttle will take you from that location to the Zoo and back to your car.

There is also valet parking available. On a busy day, it might be worth it.

GUIDED BUS TOUR

I highly recommend the guided zoo bus tour. It takes 25 to 35 minutes. It will give you a quick overview of the zoo. 

There are two situations where I wouldn’t recommend it. The first is if you have a very active toddler. They probably won’t want to sit still that long. 

The second is if you have a favorite animal that you want to photograph first thing in the morning. In that case, run over to the animal that you want to take pictures of and then return for the bus tour.

KANGAROO EXPRESS BUS

The Kangaroo Bus is a time and energy saver. It starts running at 10:30 AM. It goes in a loop through the middle and along the outer edge of the park closest to Hwy 163. The route goes from Urban Jungle down the steep Center Street hill where the bears are. Then from stop #2 by the snow leopards, it will take you up the steepest section of Park Way to stop #3. That’s at the edge of the Northern Frontier. Between stops  #3 and #4 by the meerkats, the terrain is flat. 

SKYFARI AERIAL TRAMWAY

This gondola ride takes you from nearby the Children’s Zoo across the canyon to Elephant Odyssey. It’s got great views of the Zoo, Balboa Park, and the Downtown San Diego skyline. It’s also a great way to rest and cool off.

KEEPER TALKS

These free-with-entry talks are given by the keepers and cover many species from polar bears and lemurs to giraffes. Unfortunately, their scheduling has been disrupted by the Zoo’s efforts to prevent COVID-spreading crowds. Check for the schedule at the Guest Services/Ticket & Tours booth near the Zoo entrance just across Front Street.

ANIMAL ENCOUNTERS

These presentations are an opportunity for you to see some of the Zoo’s animal ambassadors. You never know what type of animal will appear. I’ve seen huge Eurasian owls, cheetahs with their dog companions, chatty parrots, and many others. 

These presentations take place in two spots. One location’s at the Front Street Stage which is on your left as you enter. The other is at the Rocks Box stage within the Africa Rocks exhibit which takes about 25-30 minutes to walk to from the entrance.

The San Diego Zoo is divided into eight “Zoo Zones.” They are designed to bring together both animal and plant species that live in specific types of climates and habitats throughout the world.

Outback – the stars of this zone are cute koalas. But there are also kookaburras, Tasmanian devils, wallabies, and other exotics from the land down under.

Asian Passage –  Don’t skip this just because the giant pandas went home to China in 2019. Go there to see the red pandas which are like upscale, fashionista raccoons. They were always a lot more active than the giant pandas and I never really understood why they didn’t get more attention. And then spend some quality time admiring the beauty of the Amur and snow leopards. They nap a lot as all cats do. But they’re so elegant, even when they’re asleep. 

Africa Rocks This exhibit really does. There’s so much to see here. I love the lemurs and their fossa predators. Plan to spend lots of time watching the penguins zoom around the local leopard sharks in the underwater viewing area of the aquarium in their Penguin Habitat at Cape Fynbos. The space is cool and shaded with plenty of benches. It’s very popular on hot days. And sometimes the penguins are curious enough to stop and watch the children. 

Lost Forest This area’s biggest stars are the troop of western lowland gorillas. But my favorites are the orangutans. When they’re relaxing and having a snack they look like orange-haired gurus contemplating the secrets of the universe. But there’s much more to see here; Malayan tigers, exotic okapi, the occasional spot-necked otter, and Allen’s swamp monkey playing tag.

Urban Jungle There seems to be very little rhyme or reason to the types of animals that you’ll find here. It’s home to a grab-bag of animals including the cheetah animal ambassadors and the endangered one-horned rhino. It’s also the location of the interactive “Animals in Action” paid experience where you’ll get a chance to interact with different types of critters, sometimes even rhinos. Click HERE for daily discounts on “Animals in Action”.

My favorite in this section is the Masai giraffe herd exhibit. This is one of the only giraffe exhibits that I’ve seen where you are standing very close to them — on the same level. As you tilt your head back, and back, you realize just how TALL these gentle giants are. You can also feed them for a very reasonable cost.

Northern Frontier The west Skyfari boarding point is here. It’s also home to the rulers of the tundra, polar bears. But they aren’t very regal, they’re clowns. They enjoy diving off rocks and surprising each other, batting around enrichment items, and eating junk food. Ok. Their “junk food” is carrots. But since the polar bears can’t digest them, it’s like us chewing sugar-free gum. The arctic foxes are adorable too.

Elephant Odyssey Take a trip back in time to California’s Pleistocene epoch 12,000 years ago through animals that exist today. Some died out here but thrived elsewhere. See how elephants, lions, jaguars, condors, secretary birds, condors, camels, and capybara are all connected by their ancestral roots here in San Diego. There are great opportunities for unique photos of your kids (or you) riding a 10-foot long ancient lion or about to be eaten by a huge predatory bird. 

Discovery Outpost – This is the most varied section of the zoo. Skyfari’s east boarding point is here. View entertaining and informative animal shows at the Wegeforth Bowl. You’ll find tiny jewel-like hummingbirds next door to 8-foot-long Komodo dragons. Many more reptiles can also be found here.

Until the Children’s Zoo and Wegeforth Bowl renovations are complete there are only limited presentations outside of the Bowl. 

The 4D Theater is a paid experience that many think is not worth the price. The presentation is SHORT, less than 15 minutes. The 3D screen’s small, so you’re likely to be way off to one side or the other. The 4th dimension is smell, temperature changes, and getting water squirted on you (worth it on hot days?). The seats don’t move, they vibrate. And the wait can be up to an hour on peak days.

To sum it up, your Safari Park admission ticket includes anything that doesn’t have “Safari” in its title. Any activity or experience that does is something that you will need to pay extra for (the exception is riding the Conservation Carousel which requires an additional $6 fee). Animal exhibits.

One of the great things about San Diego Safari Park is the way that they’ve gone to great lengths to blur the boundaries between you, their animals, and the landscape beyond. Here are some of my favorites:

Lion Camp – I love watching the lions watching the antelope watching them from the large field enclosure next door. These lions aren’t the usually bored cats you see at most zoos. They’re either fully engaged in observing the potential ‘meals’ in the fields or they’re napping. And when they’re snoozing they are sometimes right up against the glass where you can take great selfies or compare the sizes of their paws to yours. 

Tiger Trai l – It’s lush and beautiful. It’s more like you’re in the cage rather than the kitties. If you’re lucky the tigers will be stalking YOU. I spend way too much time here. Walkabout Australia – The platypuses are a San Diego Safari Park must-see! They’re the only ones on exhibit outside of Australia in the entire world. This exhibit requires a bit of patience and careful observation. They’re quick. And almost everyone is surprised by how they look and move.

They also have tree kangaroos. Heck, I didn’t even know that kangaroos lived in trees.

Bob and I were lucky enough to be there the day that the 2nd Matschie’s tree kangaroo born at Safari Park ventured out of Mom’s pouch.

Arona, her mother, welcomed her offspring Kidori into the world after a gestation period of 44 days. At birth, the joey was just about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) in size, fitting snugly in Mom’s pouch. It took nine months for Kikori to venture out of her mother’s pouch.

These long-clawed, mahogany and cream-colored tree kangaroos weigh 25 pounds at the most. Their whorly, dense fur sheds water easily. And their superpower is that they can jump an amazing 60 feet to the ground without injury.

But wait, there’s more to Walkabout Australia. Wander into the Kangaroo Walk and you’ll be surrounded by a mob of ‘roos, wallabies, and cute baby joeys. There’s nothing that brings smiles to faces faster than a young bounder with a case of the “zoomies”. They’re ricocheting furry ping-pong balls. 

It may be possible to pet the wallabies and kangaroos . It depends upon whether the COVID restrictions have been lifted. Ask if it’s ok. And if it is don’t wander off the paths chasing them. You’ll never catch them anyway.  Be patient and let them come to you. And yes, they’re as soft and woolly as they look. San Diego Safari Park Activities and Rides

AFRICA SAFARI TRAM

I love the Africa tram. I could ride it all day.  It takes you on a 25-30 minute ride through several of the large open area enclosures. These enclosures have multiple different species in them and they interact as they would in the wild. One of the things you will see is how all the animals look to the giraffes to be their lookout. Once the giraffes start running, everybody runs. And you then see this wave of animals flying over the hills and then they all just stop for no apparent reason. 

There are no predators in the large enclosed exhibit fields. But the herbivores can see, hear and smell the nearby lions and cheetahs. It keeps them on alert and surprisingly appears to help to increase the number of babies.

CHEETAH RUN

This used to be an event that was free with admission. But during COVID they switched the format to a paid tour. However, I highly recommend it as an add-on to your visit. Seeing these cool cats go from zero to almost 60 mph in three strides never gets old.

FREQUENT FLYERS BIRD SHOW

This free-flying bird show never fails to amaze me because the birds can fly away any time they choose. And they don’t. 

I like it because you get to see large birds in flight close enough overhead that if you stretched up your hands you’d touch them (specifically NOT ALLOWED by the way…) You’ll enjoy it. And the birds seem to be having as good a time as the audience. Spoiler Alert: The star of the show is not a bird. But you’ll love him anyway. 

TIGER KEEPER TALK

The Sumatran tigers get pampered with treats while showing off their impressive teeth, claws, size, and other adaptations. Keepers that know them best will clue you in on how they safely work with these big cats. If you’re lucky you’ll see a tiger standing at a full vertical stretch just a few feet away from you. Even though the Sumatran subspecies is one of the smallest of tigers, they’re unexpectedly intimidating when they’re on their hind legs going for a treat.

TRAINING TALK

This short training session for the longer Frequent Flyers Bird Show is well worth your time. It’s always a smaller, more intimate group than the bird show. You never know which birds will be brought out for training, so it’s never the same. I’ve seen everything from silently flying owls to scurrying guinea hens. Sit down and put your feet up. It’s a good break from walking. 

Safari Park Has Better Tours?

San Diego Safari Park has a larger variety and number of tours than the Zoo . They range from traditional relaxed guided walks to the adrenaline-pumping Flightline Safari zipline.  This makes it a better destination for those who may be bored with traditional zoos, like teenagers.

San Diego Zoo Tours – How Many, Prices, Descriptions

Guided zoo tours that require a fee in addition to the admission price are called “Upgraded Experiences” by San Diego Global.

Crazy About Cats – ($92+ per person) 90 minutes. See the zoo’s most amazing felines before they start their cat naps! You start this morning tour at 8:30 AM before the official Zoo opening. You may see a jaguar, lion, tiger, mountain lion, fishing cat, leopard, ocelot, or serval. No guarantees about which particular species you’ll see. Hey, they’re cats after all. But you will be able to meet one special wild cat up close!

Early Morning Cheetah Experience ($92+ per person) 90 minutes. See one of the cheetah animal ambassadors up close while they run and play with their trainers. This cart tour will also visit other African animal exhibits at the zoo as well as some off-exhibit areas. 

Discovery Cart Tour ($55+ per person) 1 HOUR. If you don’t have much time, but want to see the plants and animals at San Diego Zoo through the eyes of an insider, this is the tour for you. This 60-minute tour takes you through 70% of the park in a small covered cart. Ask as many questions as you’d like and stop for better views and photographs of your favorite animals.

Exclusive VIP Experience – Spend up to 5 hours ($675+ per person) in a customized tour that is built around your interests by zoo professionals. Explore off-exhibit areas. And if you wish you can have many animal interactions. Just tell them what you want.  And yes, a sit-down lunch is included.

SAN DIEGO SAFARI TOUR DESCRIPTIONS

I’m going to write a short description of each tour type here. Wildlife Safari Tours – (1 HOUR for $89+ or 90 minutes for $109+ per person). There are 3 different types of tours that take you into large African and Asian multi-species animal enclosures in an open-air covered truck.. There’s always a shade cover, plenty of seating, and almost too many great photo opportunities. You also may get a chance to feed giraffes. The different options are: Wildlife Safari (1 hour), Twilight Wildlife Safari (90 minutes), and Deluxe Wildlife Safari (90 minutes).

Roar & Snore Safari – ($149+ per person) Sleepover at Safari Park in a tent. Animal presentations, behind-the-scenes access, meals, campfire (s’mores!) & cash bar. I’d do this every weekend if I could.

Ultimate Safari – (5-HOURS tour is $675+ per person) Create a Safari Park tour customized to your interests and desired activities. You must book at least 3 days in advance. 

Flightline Safari (1 HOUR for $77+ per person) 2/3rds mile zipline ride includes orientation session and “fledgling” flight .

Balloon Safari ($18+) Helium balloon ride rises 400 feet above the Park for wonderful views of the animal herds and the San Pasqual Valley.

If you love wolves you may want to take an hour detour to the California Wolf Center. There you can take tours that will give you close-up views of gray wolves and even the very endangered Mexican gray wolf. Check out my article HERE .

San Diego Zoo Takes Less Time to Visit

Exploring San Diego Zoo is quicker than Safari Park. But both could be all-day attractions. Here’s the minimum time you should allocate for each according to the San Diego Zoo Global FAQ page : 

• Zoo 3-4 hours
• Safari Park 4-6 hours

San Diego Zoo’s Closer to Downtown

The San Diego Zoo is much closer to downtown than Safari Park. It’s only 3 miles from the center of downtown San Diego.  

It will take you about 6 minutes by car from downtown to the zoo. It’s also public transit accessible. To ride the bus from downtown to the Zoo take the # 7 University & College line and get off at Park Blvd. & Zoo Place. Then walk about 4 minutes (0.2 miles) west to the Zoo entrance.

Safari Park is 35 miles north of downtown in Escondido. Travel time by car to San Diego Safari Park is 45 minutes each way. Public transportation takes almost 2 hours…one way. Taking a bus to Safari Park is just not practical for most people.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen the results of mistaking the two animal attractions. On several occasions, I’ve had to tell people trying to meet friends at the “zoo” that they’re more than 35 miles away from the San Diego Zoo because they’re at San Diego Zoo Safari Park. Oops! 

San Diego Zoo Has More Animals

The San Diego Zoo in Balboa Park has more individual animals, and more species and covers more earth habitats than the Safari Park . 

San Diego Zoo – The zoo has approximately 3,700 animals in its collection. They represent more than 660 different species & subspecies. It also has almost 700,000 specimens of rare and endangered plant species. Their collection comes from all over the globe

Safari Park – The northern San Diego county branch of the San Diego Zoo has about 2,600 individual animals and 300 species & subspecies. The plants number about 1.3 million. Both the animal and plant collections are focused on Asia and Africa at Safari Park.

Safari Park Has Easier Walking

The Safari Park is less demanding physically . It has fewer steep hills for you to navigate than the San Diego Zoo does. The biggest elevation change at Safari Park is between the Lemur Walk and the Balloon Safari and Lion Camp. But don’t worry. There’s an elevator there to take you up and down if you don’t feel like getting your cardio by taking the stairs. 

San Diego Zoo has more hills. It’s built around a steep canyon. There are mechanical alternatives to trekking the elevation changes, they just take a bit more time. There’s an elevator, the Kangaroo Bus (and the Skyfari aerial gondola ride when renovations are complete) to help you get around. I usually don’t take them because I like the workout.

San Diego Zoo Has Better Food

San Diego Zoo has better food because of Albert’s Restaurant . You’ll enjoy a fine dining experience with daily chef’s specials, vegan & gluten-free choices & a full bar. This hidden gem has a lushly planted outdoor patio and a waterfall that makes it great for a special occasion. I wrote more on this page, “Where to find the best food at San Diego Zoo?” . 

The best food at Safari Park is at the Watering Hole at Kijamii Overlook . It’s a sit-down full-service dining experience that’s a couple of giant steps above usual theme park fare. But the food’s still pre-prepared, so Albert’s at the Zoo comes out as a better restaurant. 

On the plus side, Watering Hole entrees are big enough for two to share. It’s got a full bar and an AMAZING view of one of the large field enclosures. You’ll feel like you’re sharing your table with rhinos, giraffes, and antelope. San Diego Zoo Has Better Weather

The San Diego Zoo has milder weather year around. Safari Park has greater temperature extremes because it’s located almost 20 miles from the ocean’s temperature moderating influence. That location is more likely to be hotter in the summertime. You can see it in the monthly temperature comparison graph below that I created using data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

San Diego Zoo’s Better For Toddlers

San Diego Zoo’s better if you’ve got toddlers. Don’t get me wrong, you can have a great time at Safari Park with your little tyke. But the Zoo’s MUCH better because: 

• Wildlife Explorer’s Basecamp is a kid’s paradise. I wrote an article at the link.
• It’s smaller, there’s less ground to cover with tiny tot strides
• The exhibits are closer together
• Animals are a bit easier to see because the enclosures are smaller
• The Zoo’s within Balboa Park. If your tot gets tired of all the animals, you can distract them with a train ride or a splash in a fountain.

Safari Park’s Better for Babies & Infants

The Safari Park’s just a cheetah’s whisker better than the San Diego Zoo if you’re with a baby in a stroller . There are fewer steep hills to push a pram up. It’s more friendly for nursing moms because It’s a bit less crowded and there are many secluded benches where you can give your young one a quick snack. There is also a nursing station at Nairobi Village. 

Safari Park Is A More Unique Experience

Safari Park is “different”. It’s not the usual zoo . You hear that time and again on forums and review sites. And I agree. Granted, the San Diego Zoo is a great zoo and I love spending time there. But at Safari Park the animals are in more natural, expansive settings. And because of that, you feel freer also. It’s weird but true. 

Safari Park’s less a destination and more of a journey. You are more active and engaged at Safari Park than at the Zoo. You can wander through kangaroo enclosures and a petting zoo to have closer animal encounters. You can sit and have lunch while you watch tigers.

San Diego Safari Park is definitely a more unique experience.

San Diego Zoo is better for many people than Safari Park . This was a hard post for me to write because I very much prefer the Escondido preserve. I’ve done my best to present this listing of the major differences fairly. I hope that this article helps you make up your mind about whether San Diego Zoo or Safari Park is better for you to visit.

Giant Pandas

The future is black and white.

Giant pandas are a keystone species. They’re inherently connected to the health of their delicately balanced ecosystems and the planet we all share. Together with our partners and wildlife allies like you, we’re working side by side to safeguard the future for this remarkable species and the bamboo forests they depend on.

Giant Pandas Have Arrived Safely at the San Diego Zoo

Yun Chuan and Xin Bao will spend the next several weeks acclimating to their new home and won’t be viewable to the public during this time. They’re being monitored closely by expert wildlife health and care teams who will determine when the pair are ready to meet the public.

We look forward to sharing more information—including a date and how to see the beloved pandas—as soon as it becomes available.

Yun Chuan is an almost five-year-old male. His mother Zhen Zhen was born in 2007 and was the fourth cub born at the San Diego Zoo. He’s identifiable by his long, slightly pointed nose.

Xin Bao is a nearly four-year-old female whose name means “precious treasure of prosperity and abundance.” She is best recognized by her large, round face and big, fluffy ears.

Not only does San Diego boast near-perfect temperatures year round, a sweet spot balance of city life and outdoor activities, a multitude of entertainment options, and an incredible eclectic history, it’s also the epicenter of that much sought after laid-back SoCal vibe.

As my hometown, San Diego is near and dear to my heart and I know the city like the back of my hand. So, as an insider as your guide, here are my picks for the best ways to spend a romantic date in San Diego!

Things to Do in San Diego for Couples

Take a romantic walk in balboa park.

Just minutes from downtown, Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in North America and is home to seventeen unique museums, art installations, and a multitude of different events hosted throughout the year.

A few of my favorite museums here include: San Diego Museum of Art, San Diego Natural History Museum, and Museum of Photographic Arts (MoPA).

Sunset is a particularly romantic time to visit Balboa Park. Pack a picnic to end your day in a quiet area of the park while watching the sun go down.

Visit San Diego Zoo Safari Park

Spread across 1800 acres in the San Pasqual Valley, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the county. With Africa-themed exhibits, free-range enclosures, and over 2600 animals consisting of more than 300 species and over 3500 species of plants, this park is a great educational experience.

Purchase your ticket in advance here . And for a more unique experience that will impress your date, book a Wildlife Safari for up-close views of the wildlife.

To save money, I also highly recommend purchasing a Go City Pass if you're planning to visit multiple San Diego attractions during your visit.

Plan a Date Night in Gaslamp Quarter

Located in downtown San Diego, the Gaslamp Quarter is an entertainment district famous for its Victorian architecture, eclectic history, live theatre, music productions, world-class food, and array of nightlife options.

The quarter is also home to some awesome museums, including the Gaslamp Museum at the Davis-Horton House, and the U.S.S. Midway Museum.

Take an Old Town Trolley Tour

The oldest settled area in San Diego as well as the first Spanish settlement on the West Coast, Old Town is one of my favorite places to go to soak up San Diego’s heritage. With museums displaying the story of the city, boutique shops, and plenty of historic sites, a visit to the Old Town is a great way to pay ode to the early days of San Diego.

Snorkel or Kayak in La Jolla Cove

A small, lifeguard patrolled spot in La Jolla, La Jolla Cove is a must on your visit to San Diego. Featuring breathtaking sunsets, great conditions for swimming, snorkeling, taking a sea caves kayak tour , and even scuba diving, this picture-perfect cove will have you reaching for your camera in no time.

Spend the Afternoon in Point Loma

Point Loma is a rugged peninsula filled with trails, sea caves, coastal bluffs, lighthouses, tide pools, and cool exhibits on California history.

However, besides the aforementioned, Point Loma is famous for both the Cabrillo National Monument and the Women’s museum; the former commemorating the landing of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo at San Diego Bay, and the latter being a must-see museum dedicated to women’s history and art.

Dine in Little Italy

San Diego’s Little Italy is a vibrant neighborhood filled with craft breweries, art galleries, boutique hotels, cafes, and wineries. Additionally, Little Italy plays home to a bunch of awesome annual cultural festivals.

It's one of my favorite places to take a date to dinner in San Diego!

Walk Along Sunset Cliffs

Stretched along the west shore of Point Loma, Sunset Cliffs National Park is a hotspot for people wanting to take in the scenic cliffs, caves, and incredible sunset views.

Hike Torrey Pines State Reserve

Sitting on the cliffs above Torrey Pines State Beach , this natural preserve is home to the rarest pine tree in North America, the Torrey Pine, and is therefore dedicated to the tree’s preservation.

The preserve is a gorgeous mix of pine forests and sandstone canyons, and even has multiple difficulties of hiking trails to get out and enjoy. Note that the preserve is only open during the day and has limited amenities.

Experience Belmont Park

Opened on July 4, 1925, Mission Bay’s Belmont Park is a historic beachfront amusement park. Aside from the rides, the park boasts a laser maze, zip line, rock wall, mini golf, and an array of restaurants.

Visit Coronado Island

A resort city on San Diego Bay, Coronado is home to a wide beach, Centennial Park (that has awesome San Diego city skyline views), and the famous Hotel Del Coronado, a historic upscale beach hotel.

Opened in 1888, the Hotel Del Coronado is situated just five miles from downtown and is both a National Historic Landmark and a California Historical Landmark.

Watch the Sunset at Torrey Pines Gliderport

Located in La Jolla, the Torrey Pines Gliderport was established in 1930 and is a private use glider airport that was originally used as a soaring site. Today the gliderport is one of the top paragliding and hang gliding spots in the country.

I recommend taking your date for a sunset picnic along the cliffs for epic views of the gliders with the Pacific Ocean as the backdrop. For additional fun, just off to the side of the gliderport you’ll find Blacks Beach, a secluded section of beach that has one of the most powerful surf breaks in all of California.

Note that just about 100 yards south of the trailhead leading to the Gliderport begins the clothing optional section of Blacks Beach so, depending on what you’re into, you can make a beeline for it or steer clear.

Go Whale Watching

From blue whales to humpback whales, whale watching is one of my favorite things to do in San Diego! This 4.5 hour whale watching tour leaves from San Diego and it includes sodas and snacks. They have a whale sighting guarantee -- so if you don't see a whale, you get to come back for free! 

In my opinion, a whale watching trip beats going to Seaworld San Diego any day (not to mention is a lot more ethical and kinder to the animals).

Spend the Day at Windansea Beach

Located at 6800 Neptune Place, Windansea Beach in La Jolla offers quality surf breaks year round with a panorama of unreal views. While at Windansea, head over to the historic Surf Shack that was built in the 1940’s by WWII soldiers who also enjoyed surfing here.

Fun fact, Windansea was the primary location of Andy Warhol’s 1967 film “San Diego Surf.” Talk about iconic.

Hike Cedar Creek Falls

One of my favorite day trips from San Diego, Cedar Creek Falls (also known as Devil’s Punch Bowl) is an 80-foot tall waterfall that cascades into a glistening freshwater pool below.

In my experience, it’s best to head to the falls in the spring when the weather is warm enough and the pool depth is at its peak, and make sure you bring ample drinking water, the trek there can get strenuous.

Visit Birch Aquarium

The Birch Aquarium offers more than just a quick gaze at ocean life. They offer more than 60 habitats and hands on interactive experiences that allows visitors to have a glimpse into ocean life from the Pacific Northwest to Tropical seas and everywhere in between.

See little blue penguins, seadragons, seahorses, the hall of fishes, a giant kelp forest and have a one-of-a-kind hands-on experience at the Tide Pool Plaza.

See Live Music at Petco Park

Home to the San Diego Padres, Petco Park is also a prominent venue that hosts concerts, soccer, golf and rugby. Tours of the park are offered daily, including pre-game tours! Even if you’re not a baseball fan, the architecture and set up at this ballpark is something to see.

Take a Sunset Cruise in San Diego Harbor

Spend a quick hour or two sight-seeing in the California sun on a San Diego harbor cruise . This narrated tour will take you by the Coronado Bridge and the US Naval fleet and provide stunning harbor views from the water. For an added bonus, you may even get to see sea lions sunbathing on the rocks off the shore.

Take Memorable Couples Photos at Carlsbad Flower Fields

The elaborate coordinated flower displays The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are in bloom for 6-8 weeks each year, spanning early March through early May, so this is the best time to visit these beautiful gardens.

The dynamic bursts of color created by the lush gardens are something out of a movie. Stroll the fragrant pathways, take charming pictures and enjoy a beautiful day amongst the fields.

Sunset Sail Around San Diego Bay

For gorgeous sunset views of San Diego Bay, book a two-hour small group sunset sailing experience .

Your view will include military vessels, historical landmarks and of course, the peaceful San Diego waterfront. This is a small group experience so space is limited to only 6 people which makes it a unique and romantic experience.

Visit a popular landmark and see the sites! Mt. Soledad is known for the flawless 360-degree panoramic views, it is the perfect place to watch the sunset over the golf course, La Jolla Cove or La Jolla Shores.

Visit Presidio Park

Take a quick trip back in time and visit Presidio Park . This was one of the first European settlements in San Diego founded in 1769. There is so much to see and do at the park, so stop by the Visitor Center to learn about everything it has to offer.

Offering complimentary admission, the museum is open daily from 10am to 4pm.

Have Lunch in Del Mar

A famous beach town in San Diego County, Del Mar offers more than just beaches (but of course the Del Mar City Beach and the Del Mar Dog Beach are must-sees!). If you want to spend your day walking around and exploring, Seagrove Park, Powerhouse Park, and Del Mar Plaza are all great options to explore.

My favorite thing to do in Del Mar is have lunch at one of the many restaurants along coastal Highway 101. It's a great place to grab an ice cream and window shop as well!

If you happen to be in San Diego during the racing season, The Del Mar Race Track can be a great place to bring a date!

Tour USS Midway Museum

With nearly 10 acres of displays exploring airline hangers and flight deck exhibits, the USS Midway Museum offers more than you could imagine. Aside from the exhibits, they offer activities such as flight simulators, the battle of Midway Theater, and an Aircraft Gallery full of actual aircraft.

It's the perfect spot if your date is an aviation enthusiast. This “City at Sea” is massive and you could easily spend hours here! You'll want to grab dinner afterwards at the nearby Fish Market for fresh seafood and sunset views.

Make sure to take a photo in front of the famous "Kissing Statue” along the downtown waterfront, right next to the USS Midway!

As mentioned above, Hotel Del Coronado is a San Diego, not to mention American, classic. With the beach just a few steps away, great entertainment and restaurants, and all the amenities at your fingertips, a stay at Hotel Del Coronado will be just as notable as your trip to San Diego itself!

A hotel steeped in luxury with a great ocean view, La Jolla’s La Valencia Hotel is a vintage gem that will have you staying in one of San Diego’s most iconic neighborhoods.

With plenty of restaurants within walking distance, cute beach-vibe rooms, and a new adults-only pool, Kona Kai Resort is a great place to come back and relax in after a long day of sightseeing.
