The shark dives involve one reef dive, followed by a second dive with everyone kneeling in the sand on the bottom as the shark feeder doles out his goodies. You've heard the term "sharknado?" It's a real thing and being in one is an adrenaline rush you'll never forget.

I should warn the shark-timid among you that because Caribbean reef sharks are plentiful in the waters surrounding Nassau and because dive shops have been doing baited shark dives here for years, you may encounter sharks on any dive in Nassau, though at a bit more distance than during the shark feeds. In fact, I've never not seen a shark while diving here.

Paradise Island and Aquaventure Oasis Waterpark

All day, moderate, $$$$.

Excursions that include access to Atlantis Paradise Island Bahamas seem to no longer mention the name of the mega-resort that made Paradise Island famous. If you've always wanted to go, excursions labeled Aquaventure are your ticket.

The day pass includes access to miles of beaches, the on-site casino, and the Aquaventure water park featuring 141 acres of slides, swimming areas, river rides, and wave areas. The pass also allows you to dine in the resort's eateries, explore a myriad of shops or even add an aquatic animal experience like a dolphin swim.

You can purchase Atlantis day passes independently, but the advantage of booking your visit as an excursion is that transportation will be included.

Freeport island tour, beach and shopping

4 hours, easy, $.

Shore excursions that bundle a tour with a beach break and shopping are always a good choice in the Bahamas. You get to see a bit of the island, learn its history, shop for souvenirs and get in some coveted beach time, all with easy transportation. This kind of tour is especially useful if you've never been to Grand Bahama Island. For a small amount of money, you get to scope the place out for your adventures on your next Bahamas cruise.

Pirate's Cove beach, zipline and waterpark

4 hours, moderate, $$$.

If zip lining is your thing, this is a good place to get your fix. The beachside zip line has options for starting at 50 feet up or 30 feet, making it ideal for newbies wanting to try the experience. Since this excursion also includes time at the beach and floating water park, consider it a deal.

Glass bottom boat shark experience

3 hours, easy, $$$.

Want to see Caribbean reef sharks without putting your toes in the water? This excursion takes you on a glass-bottom boat ride to waters where Caribbean reef sharks have been fed. The boat has ample deck space for sunning when you aren't watching the action below the boat. It's a fun way to spend a day out on the water with an opportunity to see these predators and other colorful tropical fish without fear. Typical Bahamian refreshments round out the fun.

Blue hole snorkeling

5 hours, moderate, $$$.

My rule of thumb is to snorkel at every opportunity while in the Bahamas. It's a fun and easy way to take a peek beneath the waves at the colorful sea life found in these waters. When you book a snorkeling excursion in the Bahamas, gear is provided, including snorkeling vests to keep you afloat.

For the best Bahamas snorkeling, choose a blue hole snorkeling excursion. Blue holes are found throughout the Bahamas and are essentially open-topped caverns, so it's like swimming in a fishbowl. Some are landlocked, where they may be filled with either fresh or salt water, and inhabited by a wide range of aquatic life, including crabs, lobsters, octopus and fish. Others are offshore, below the surface of the ocean, creating a mini reef environment to explore.

This excursion involves a lengthy ride, but it's definitely worth it.

Swim with the pigs

1.5 hours, easy, $$$.

Swimming pigs are kind of a big deal in the Bahamas. Animal lovers can enjoy time in shallow water watching (and even feeding) these silly pigs. Most of the cruise line private islands also offer pig swims, but the one in Freeport does not involve a boat ride, which may make it more appealing to some. You'll also get time to hang out on Crystal Beach and buy lunch.

Snorkeling from shore or by boat

Varies, moderate, $-$$.

Cruise ship private islands make snorkeling easy. Most of the islands will offer snorkeling gear for rent, and you can snorkel right from the beach. (If you, like me, never miss an opportunity to put your face in the water, consider buying your own snorkel gear for future sailings.) Optional boat excursions to primo snorkeling spots are also possible from some islands.

1-1.5 hours, moderate, $-$$.

Kayaking from the cruise line private islands gives you a new perspective of these fun playgrounds. Tours are led by experienced guides who can point out sea life in shallow water while leading you along the shore of the tropical paradise. Beginners are welcome and life jackets are provided.

Stingray City Bahamas

1.5 hours, easy, $$.

While the Stingray City experience has been popular in Grand Cayman for years, it's relatively new to the Bahamas. Stingray City Bahamas is located among the Berry Islands, home to Royal Caribbean's Perfect Day at CocoCay and Norwegian's Great Stirrup Cay. You'll be taken on a short speedboat ride to a shallow sandy spot in a location where stingrays congregate. Your guide will provide fish to feed the rays, which swoop in and suck the fish from your hand. It's a fun outing if you haven't done it before and it doesn't take away too much of your beach time on the island.

Horseback riding by land and sea

1.25 hours, moderate, $$$.

Carnival offers a horseback riding tour from Half Moon Cay that includes a brief venture into the sea with your horse. The minimum age is 10. As the mother of a horse-loving daughter, I can tell you that riding in the ocean was one of her favorite cruise memories ever. No riding experience is required, but you must be able to follow directions and pay attention to your guide for your own safety as well as that of the horses and other riders. One other thing to know: There will be poo, both on land and in the water.

Bottom line

Bahamas shore excursions typically focus on activity in the water, but if shopping, food tours or sightseeing are more your thing, you'll find those options as well. The Bahamas is made up of a culturally rich collection of islands that have a reputation for welcoming visitors with arms wide open. From simple beach break excursions to full-day tours, you can easily find something that floats your boat in the Bahamas.

8 Free (or Cheap) Cruise Shore Excursions in Nassau, Bahamas

Nassau Bahamas; Courtesy of Ruth Peterkin/Shutterstock.com

See recent posts by Courtney Elko

Whether you’re spending your entire family vacation in Nassau or just passing through during your Caribbean cruise, there are plenty of free or super-cheap things to do in the capital city of the Bahamas .

Junkanoo Beach in Nassau, Bahamas; Courtesy of Patrick Horton/Shutterstock.com

1. Junkanoo Beach

As one of the few free beaches in Nassau that’s close to the cruise port, Junkanoo Beach can get crowded. But it offers white, sugary sand and clear, blue waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Located at Bay and Nassau streets near Courtyard by Marriott Nassau Downtown/Junkanoo Beach , this free beach is about a 15-minute walk or so from the cruise port terminal. Chairs and umbrellas can be rented from beach vendors and food is available for purchase from beach vendors and restaurants that line the street behind the beach. Restrooms and changing areas are also available at this beach.

2. Nassau Straw Market

Browsing Nassau’s Straw Market , located on Bay Street, is a must when visiting the area—and it’s free! (Of course, the shopping is another story!) This souvenir market offers everything from straw hats and beach bags to wood carvings and paintings . Be prepared to be approached by the vendors selling their wares, but know that you can haggle for the best price.

3. Spray Fountains Outside Straw Market

Located just outside the Straw Market on Bay Street is a courtyard area with splash pad-like spray fountains situated in the center. It’s the perfect place for kids to cool off! There are also shaded areas to sit and put your feet up, plus even more vendors selling goods.

Woodworking in Nassau, Bahamas; Courtesy of pablopicasso/Shutterstock.com

4. Woodworking

In and around the Straw Market area are vendors selling wooden sculptures and figurines. Families will find some of the craftsman working on their next creations. It’s fun to watch how quickly and creatively they can chisel and hammer the wood. Take a minute to watch and admire the craft at no cost.

Queens Staircase in Nassau, Bahamas; Courtesy of dnaveh/Shutterstock.com

5. Queen’s Staircase

The 66 steps of the Queen’s Staircase (named after Queen Victoria) were carved out of limestone rock in the 1790s. This Bahamian landmark is a pretty spot surrounded by limestone and greenery, and makes for a great photo opportunity or a place to have the kids burn off some energy, free of charge.

Fort Fincastle in Nassau, Bahamas; Courtesy of Robert Szymanski/Shutterstock.com

6. Fort Fincastle

Once you’ve climbed the Queen’s Staircase, you’ll be rewarded with a gorgeous view and the chance to explore a fort that—like the Queen’s Staircase—was cut from limestone in the 1790s. Fort Fincastle overlooks the city of Nassau and Paradise Island, and was actually used as a lighthouse until 1817. Free, guided tours of the fort take place daily from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.; donations are encouraged. Some cruise lines offer tours of the fort (including transportation) for a fee.

 7. The Pirates of Nassau Museum

Located near the Straw Market and about an eight-minute walk from the cruise port terminal is The Pirates of Nassau Museum . Kids will love to climb aboard the life-size pirate ship and experience what it was like to live like a pirate in the 1700s. The self-guided tour offers plenty of details on the pirates of the Bahamas and how they lived. It takes about 30 minutes to an hour to walk through the museum. There is also a pub onsite, perfect for grabbing lunch after your pirate adventure. Admission for adults is $13.50 and $6.75 for children age 4 to 17.

8. Ardastra Gardens and Zoo

The Ardastra Gardens and Zoo , the only zoo in the Bahamas, is best known for its flamingos. There are more than 200 flamingos at this zoo, and three times daily, these pink beauties march about to say hello to visitors. The flamingos are not afraid of people and are happy to pose on one foot right next to you for a flamingo photo! More than 200 other types of animals can be found at the zoo, including domestic pigs, lemurs, iguanas, turtles and parrots, and they are all surrounded by gorgeous greenery and colorful flowers throughout the 4 acres of tropical gardens. Admission is $18.75 for adults and $9.50 for children age 4 to 12; it’s free for children under 3 years old.

Which Nassau excursions are worth the money?

I saw a lot of very unhappy people post about the Atlantis excursion on the Carnival page. What excursion did you do on Nassau/Freeport and was it worth the money??

We have never been to Freeport, but have been to Nassau a few times. Are you interested in a beach experience or water park like Atlantis? For Atlantis, you may be better to find other ways to get a cheaper instead or paying Carnival prices. Some people book a room at the hotel or the Comfort Suites which also provides access to the facilities at Atlantis.

If you are okay with a beach, we took the water taxi over to Paradise Island and then walked to Cabbage beach. Though taking a car taxi will be faster and much easier. Cabbage beach is right beside Atlantis, though you can't use facilities. When we walked from the water taxi dock, we along with the whole throng from the ferry followed some local guy. Just tip the guy a few bucks or otherwise you will get badgered till you do. If you want to avoid that, just take a regular taxi.

We just did the self guided walking tour, the first time there. Second time went to pirates republic brewery and had a flight of beers. This time probably won't even get off.

Our very good friends did the Atlantis excursion with their teen grandchildren this summer and had a GREAT time! :D

We did the Segway excursion. It was fun!

I have since realized there are different ones and I was looking at the one with the waterpark. I'm interested in the one with just access to the hotel. Which one did your friend do?

Brooke71991

I have did the atlantis excursion before. I really enjoyed it. While I admit I wished it had been a bit cheaper, I really enjoyed the water slides and the lazy river. I did not have issues with tubes like many people had. I grabbed a tube in the morning and rode the lazy river several times and loved it. I then rode all the rides that required a tube. Then I gave my tube away and ate a quick lunch. I went on all the slides that did not require a tube at that point. Then I went through the hotel, which has a gorgeous casino and atrium. Then we looked at the marine habitat. I did not go to the beach part of it. The excursion feels short simply because there was so much to do. But I printed out a layout of the park before ever going and had everything already planned and stuck to it. That allowed me to get the most out of it. I probably would not do it a second time purely because I hate the sun and I spent a lot of time in the sun while there. Some of the lines were quite long, but I never spent more than 30-40 minutes in line for any one slide.

dorchrislen

In Nassau we did the trip to Blue Lagoon with Carnival and were disappointed a bit. The tour advertised they would point out some sights and famous homes, which they never did. It was just a boring ride with no narration. The island is meh unless you like to pay for every entertainment and money is no object. We went for the snorkeling, but that area is small, with no lifeguard, and a bit more advanced than our liking because the current takes you our and around the rocks quickly and you can't get back in easily.

Previously we also did Atlantis and thought it was worth it for the water park with lunch. But only if you are the first boat in and can get in quickly and on the slides before the masses; otherwise I would avoid it.

In Freeport, we did a day pass at a Lucayan resort. It was okay if you just want a beach with some minimal activities.

They did the waterpark.

JayDeeJay

In Nassau, Take a cab to cable beach and enjoy local cooking on the beach, it's wonderful. We also like Ardastra Gardens and Zoo. In Freeport, take local transportation to Port Lucaya and have fresh conch fritters and ice cold a Kalik beer at the first little restaurant on the right thru the entrance. It's also a lovely place to shop around little stores, good prices. Or go on the Gibbs Garden excursion, it goes to Lucaya as well, and Gibbs Gardens is a lovely place to tour. We enjoy the Nassau/Freeport cruise, and have done it several times now. ENJOY!!!

We're not beach people, but we like to snorkel. In Freeport, we thoroughly enjoyed our package tour with Chad4Nature. The day tour started and ended right at the port. The group maximum could have been enough to fill the van, but as it turned out, dh and I were the only guests on our particular day's excursion. Our guide took us sight seeing, shopping (tailored to our taste), on a nature walk, and snorkeling at Deadman's Reef at Paradise Cove. Snorkeling equipment and lunch were included. We couldn't have been happier with our guide and the value of the excursion.

Blue Hole Watersports is an excellent company if you are interested in an independent snorkeling or boating excursion. You meet them at the British Colonial Hilton, a short walk from the pier. Check out their reviews on Tripadvisor. We loved our trip with them.

25+ beaches globally or Freeport?

I forgot to include, what about it makes it one of the top 3 for you?

We had a group of 8 in Nassau, and we arranged a private boat that took us to an island with a beach not far away where we were able to snorkel and he even had a tube to do tube rides (Getting salt water splashed in your face is not as fun as fresh water back home). I think it came out to about $600 for the 8 of us.

Do you have contact information for this company? The website is not working. I sent a message on Facebook but after I sent it a message popped up saying the company usually takes a week or more to respond. Thanks!

2 Kentucky women say they were drugged, raped by Bahamas resort staffers, suspects arrested

Portrait of Natalie Neysa Alund

Police in the Bahamas this week arrested two people on sexual assault charges after two American woman on a Carnival cruise said they were drugged and raped while in the Caribbean country.

The report comes on the heels of the United States Department of State issuing a travel advisory for the Bahamas − a popular destinations for cruises as well as for spring-break vacations.

"Quick response," by officers in Grand Bahama , the northernmost island of the Bahamas in the Atlantic Ocean, resulted in the arrest of a 54-year-old man of Eight Mile Rock and a 40-year-old man of South Bahamia after they allegedly sexually assaulted two women on Sunday, the Royal Bahamas Police Force reported.

According to a preliminary report from the department, the attacks took place shortly after noon on Sunday while two females visited a beach in Central Grand Bahama.

The women, two mothers from Kentucky who identified themselves as Amber Shearer and Dongayla Dobson, told News Nation 's Chris Cuomo they were "relaxing on a Grand Bahama beach" when a resort employee allegedly gave them drinks spiked with a cocktail of drugs including benzodiazepines.

"They were given drinks - a coconut and pineapple drink − spiked with a series of drug and narcotics," the women's Miami-based attorney, Nicholas Gerson told USA TODAY Thursday. "They became inebriated and were both taken away and raped."

At the time of the reported attacks, Gerson said his clients, both 31, were unaware of the recent travel warning and "not aware of any warnings given by Carnival."

When reached by phone on Thursday, Dobson's husband told USA TODAY he and his wife live in Lancaster, Kentucky, a small city about 35-miles south of Lexington.

He also said his wife and Shearer are childhood friends who both grew up in Danville, Kentucky, a town about 10 miles west of Lancaster and deferred additional questions to his wife's lawyer.

'A two-for-one drink deal'

Gerson said on the day of the alleged assaults, his clients went on an excursion called "Pirate's Cove Beach Getaway" and were taken to the island by a shuttle arranged by Carnival.

There, the attorney said, a resort staffer offered them a two-for-one drink deal, and after taking just a few sips, they realized something was off with the beverage.

Dobson told Cuomo the friends went to look for seashells for their children with "a male resort employee" and the next thing she remembered "was waking up while she was being assaulted by a uniformed male resort staffer."

“I came to in the process of my rape,” Dobson told Cuomo. “I want people to be safe... Two’s not enough." She said they "thought as best friends … that we could protect each other and to be safe."

That wasn't enough, she said.

Shortly after the reported rapes, both women told Cuomo, local authorities and other staff at the resort were able to identify the men accused of sexually assaulting the women through video surveillance.

The women took toxicology tests when they returned to the ship and reported the rapes, Gerson said

Toxicology results, he said, found little if no alcohol in his clients' systems, but the women tested positive for benzos and other drugs including cocaine.

'Support for the two guests'

Carnival released the following statement to USA TODAY on Thursday:

"While ashore in Freeport, Bahamas on an independent shore excursion, two guests on Carnival Elation reported to Bahamian police that they were sexually assaulted at a local beach. Our onboard Care Team provided support for the two guests as they sailed back to Jacksonville. Bahamian police are investigating the matter and Carnival is providing our full cooperation."

As of Thursdays police had not released the names of the men they arrested.

The department's daily crime report log posted online showed the case remained open and under investigation.

A spokesperson for Pirate's Cove shared a statement with USA TODAY late Thursday afternoon that said managers took swift action as soon as the incident was reported and the business is cooperating with investigators.

"We regret that our guests experienced this incident, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to aid police in the collection of evidence in response to these allegations, including providing Police access to video from the sixteen cameras around the beach facility where the assault of the two guests allegedly occurred," the statement read. "Accusations of any kind are always thoroughly investigated by Pirates Cove management and, when warranted, the organization calls in local authorities.

Level 2 travel advisory

Last month, the USDS issued a  Level 2 travel advisory  for the Bahamas.

The advisory, posted on Jan. 26, warns travelers to "exercise increased caution" because of crime on the islands of New Providence including Grand Bahama, Nassau, and Freeport.

A security alert posted by the  U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas  on Jan. 24 also reported 18 murders have taken place in Nassau since the start of the year.

The alert warns that murders have occurred at all hours including in broad daylight on the streets.

"Retaliatory gang violence has been the primary motive in 2024 murders," the embassy wrote.

Gerson said Carnival did not warn his clients about the travel advisory.

"The cruise line has a legal obligation to warn their passengers about danger they may know about and it applies to places passengers are visiting or expected to visit," Gerson said.
