Travel Countries VISA-FREE with UK visa

One of the frequent questions I get is which countries can I visit with a UK visa. The short answer is the UK. The long answer is you can travel to 40 countries and territories VISA-FREE with UK visa.

I encourage you all to get a US visa or at least a Canada visa first. Both these visas are long-term visas. These visas offer VISA-FREE travel to quite a few countries. But if you happen to have a UK visa or applying for one, then it is still better than not having any visas at all. There are about 40 countries and territories you can visit with a UK visa.

UK tourist visas are mostly short-term (C-Type) visas valid for 6 months. The UK does issue long-term visas for 5/10 years but it would cost an arm and a leg.

The UK visa application is not the most difficult, but it can be stressful due to its lengthy processing times and lack of customer service.

What Countries Can I Visit With A UK Visa?

What Countries Can I Visit With A UK Visa?

Amar Ali Immigration Solicitors

By Amar Ali, Immigration Solicitor

The UK is a wonderful place to visit, live and work. With a rich history and a fascinating culture, it is both a perfect holiday destination and a great place to settle down. However, if you have come from across the globe to see what the UK has to offer, you might also be tempted to visit the surrounding countries to make the trip worthwhile. In this article we will be looking at the various destinations that are covered by the different visas you can get to enter the UK as a foreigner, and what they can help you achieve.

What countries can I visit with a UK visa?

If you wish to do some travelling whilst in the UK, you may also want to know where you can go with a UK visa. With a UK visa you can visit all the countries within the United Kingdom, which includes England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. For other countries such as Ireland, you will need a separate visa.

Is there any difference in countries I can visit depending on the visa that I have?

Whatever the reason for your stay in the UK, you will need a visa accordingly. Whether you are a student, a tourist or working full- or part-time, you will need the correct visa in order to enter the country. No matter which visa you need or have, you will only be able to use it to gain entrance into the UK, which includes the countries mentioned above. If you wish to travel to other countries, you will need the appropriate visa from that country.

Unfortunately, it is not until you gain British citizenship that you get significantly better travel rights around the world and specific within the European Union. This will likely change after the UK leaves the union in 2019, but there will likely be significant allowances for British passport holders moving forward with our European partners.

If I gain Indefinite Leave to Remain, will I gain extended rights?

For those of you who wish to settle in the UK, you will need to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). First you will need to find out if you are eligible to apply, and once you have applied, wait for your application to be accepted. Once you have gained your Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), you will not get your extended rights straight away. You will next have to apply for British citizenship after having spent a minimum of 6 years in the UK.

You will need to have spent at least 5 years in the UK before you are eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), and a further 12 months to be able to apply for British citizenship. This only applies to certain visa routes and you will need to ensure that the one you are on is applicable. Once you have your British citizenship, you will then gain your extended rights.

Will I get the same rights as a British citizen born in the UK if gain British citizenship?

Once you have gone through the process of applying for and getting Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), and you have gained British citizenship, you will obtain your extended rights. Once you have this, you will have the same rights as a person who was born in the UK.

This is the ideal target for many who travel to the UK to live and work. It is very achievable as long as you stick to your visa terms and remain in the country for the desired amount of time. You will need to ensure that you also have not left the country for long periods, as this can count against your application.

When the UK leaves the European Union will my rights be affected?

The UK leaving the EU has us all questioning what is in store for the future. For businesses and trade, but also for the lives of British Citizens and those from abroad, what does the future hold? The short answer is, we don't know. The longer answer is that many things are bound to change, but as far as the rights of the UK's citizens go, it is unlikely that there will be any major changes.

Can I relocate to another country on a UK visa?

If you have a UK visa, you will only be able to travel within the UK. If you wish to visit, live or work in another country, then you will have to apply for a visa directly from that country. However, if you have gained British citizenship and then wish to relocate to another country, things would be slightly different. If you wanted to relocate to a country within the European Union, then currently you wouldn't require a visa. If you wish to relocate further afield, then you would need a visa from that country.

Once the UK leaves the EU, things will change. With British citizenship you will have the same rights as someone born in the UK, and as things unfold with Brexit , we will know more about our freedom of movement, and which countries will require a visa for travel, work or permanent settling.

Where can I get more help?

Getting a visa can be quite complicated, especially if you don't speak the language, or if you don't have anyone to help you. Whether you know the visa you need but don't know how to get it, or you know nothing about UK visas and would like some help in figuring out which one you need, there is always someone you can go to have your questions answered. Call today to speak to our immigration solicitors who can help you out, whatever your visa issue. Don't suffer in silence, get a team of experts in your corner and give yourself the best chance of remaining in the UK for the long-term.

Things to Know Before Traveling While Studying in the UK

Now you have known about which countries can you visit with a UK student visa . Here are the certain essential things international students must consider before travelling while studying in the UK:

Travelling During Your Course: Attendance and Visa Compliance:

Your attendance is closely monitored, and missing classes due to travel can impact your Student Visa. Your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) specifies your course start and end dates. During this period, you’re expected to be in the UK, with exceptions for short trips on weekends and during vacations.

Term Time and Breaks:

Undergraduate students have breaks during Christmas, Easter, and Summer. Master’s students typically have breaks during Christmas and Easter, excluding the Summer. For PhD students, breaks include Christmas, Easter, and a 35-day period as defined in the Graduate handbook.

Dissertation Write-Up Period:

Students with a Student Visa covering the dissertation write-up period are still considered in term time. Prolonged absences during this period may lead to visa cancellation.

Absences and Progression:

Extended absences during term time may impact course progression. If urgent travel is necessary, consult your personal tutor and Visa Compliance team. Each case will be assessed individually.

Travelling Outside the UK with a UK Student Visa

Permission for international travel:.

While holding a valid UK Student Visa, you are generally permitted to travel outside of the UK. However, there are important considerations to keep in mind:

Visa Validity:

Ensure that your Student Visa is valid for the entire duration of your planned absence. Check the expiry date on your visa sticker or BRP card.

Re-Entry to the UK:

Before leaving, confirm that your visa allows for multiple entries. Most Student Visas permit multiple entries, but it’s crucial to verify this to avoid any issues upon return.

Document Preparation:

  • Before departure, gather following essential documents:
  • Passport: Ensure it’s valid for the entire duration of your trip.
  • Biometric Residence Permit (BRP): This must be in your possession.
  • Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS): Have a copy as it provides important information to immigration officials.

Schengen Visa and Other Travel Permits:

For visits to Schengen countries or other non-UK destinations, check if additional visas or permits are required. Apply for any necessary visas well in advance of your travel dates.

What Is The Benefit Of Using UK Student Visa To Travel Other Countries?

Using a UK visa to embark on international travel confers a range of advantages, enhancing the overall travel experience and streamlining the process. Primarily, possessing a UK visa facilitates entry into countries that recognize it, often substituting the need for separate visa applications, resulting in savings of both time and expenses.

Additionally, holding a UK visa affords a sense of assurance while traveling. This is owing to the comprehensive background check and travel plan disclosure already undertaken during the UK visa application process. Consequently, transitioning through immigration and security checkpoints in other countries becomes remarkably smoother, given the analogous nature of the procedures.

Furthermore, the possession of a UK visa grants a notable convenience for future visits to the UK. A valid UK visa permits multiple entries into the country over its stipulated validity period, a particularly advantageous feature for those intending frequent visits in a condensed time frame.

Ultimately, a UK visa can significantly broaden one’s spectrum of travel opportunities. It opens avenues to a diverse array of countries that might not be as readily accessible otherwise. This, in turn, enables exploration of novel destinations, immersion in distinct cultures, and the creation of enduring memories destined to be cherished for years to come.

Why Countries Extend Visa Exemptions to UK Visa Holders?

There are several underlying motives:

  • Diplomatic Relations: Some nations maintain robust diplomatic ties with the UK, prompting them to grant visa exemption as a gesture of goodwill and collaborative spirit.
  • Economic Advantages: Extending visa exemptions to UK visa holders can stimulate tourism and business travel, bolstering the economic prosperity of the host country.
  • Reciprocity: In certain cases, countries reciprocate the favorable treatment of their citizens by the UK, thereby opting to offer similar privileges to UK visa holders.
  • Security Considerations: UK visa holders are often perceived as lower security risks, given the stringent vetting process associated with obtaining a UK visa.

Hi, a few people have mentioned that this is not possible and some have had issues with boarding. It is best to call the airline to be sure. It seems only those with tourist visas are allowed to get the visa on arrival.

Indonesia to give visa-free entry to people from 20 countries

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Already eyeing up a winter break in the sun? Indonesia could soon be an easier destination to reach, as the government there plans to ditch holiday visa requirements for nationals of 20 countries.

"We are proposing visa-free entry for tourists from countries that provide the greatest economic impact," said Sandiaga Uno , the country's tourism minister.

France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Russia, Spain and the UK are the European nations on the list, according to state news agency Antara, which reported that the relaxation is to take effect in October.

Australia, China, India, Japan and the US are among the other countries whose passport holders are to get easier access to the 5,000 kilometre-wide, 13,000-island Indonesian archipelago.

Among those islands are Bali, popular for its beaches and party scene, and Komodo, home to the fearsome eponymous lizard. Also popular is the world’s most populous island, Java, which is home to 150 million people and to sights such as Borobudur, the world’s biggest Buddhist temple and Jakarta, the sprawling capital city.

Indonesia’s government is aiming for 17 million tourists in 2024, with 5.2 million recorded during the first 5 months of the year. Such an influx, if attained, would top the pre-Covid lockdown visitor number for 2019.

Of the 16.1 million foreign visitors recorded that year, more than a third landed on Bali, where - similar to sentiments seen in Europe’s big visitor draws such as Amsterdam, Barcelona and Venice - there have been grumblings about so-called overtourism.

In response, Bali’s local authorities earlier this year imposed a tourism tax. There have long been calls for tougher punishments for what Antara labels "problematic foreigners," a designation used in the wake of a British national being arrested last month for stealing a truck and colliding with motorists, while allegedly "under the influence."

In April, Indonesian airline TransNusa added routes from Bali to Manado, a diving spot on the island of Sulawesi, east of Borneo and south of the Philippines, and from Manado to Ambon, the regional capital of what were once known in Europe as the "Spice Islands."

The government aims to make it easier to get around the vast archipelago and to attract more tourists to areas other than Bali and Java.

Close family members include your spouse or civil partner, child, grandchild, parent or grandparent.

Check if you can still apply to the EU Settlement Scheme .

You can only apply from outside the UK if you have a valid passport or national identity card with a biometric chip.

Commonwealth citizens

you had permanent permission to stay in the UK (‘indefinite leave to remain’) but it was not under the EU Settlement Scheme and you left the UK for more than 2 years

Belarusian authorities on Wednesday expanded visa-free travel for residents of 35 European countries, including members of the European Union and the United Kingdom , as part of authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko ' s efforts to improve relations with the West.

The Belarusian Foreign Ministry said Lukashenko has approved temporary visa-free travel for citizens of European nations arriving by rail or road, describing the move as a reflection of the country's “openness and peacefulness.”

The new rules, which become effective Friday and last until the end of the year, allow European travelers to stay in Belarus for 30 days without visas. They broaden the existing visa-free regime for residents of European countries arriving by plane.

Lukashenko, who marks 30 years in power on Saturday, has ruled the ex-Soviet country of 9.5 million with an iron fist, relentlessly suppressing dissent and winning the nickname of “Europe's last dictator” in the West. His isolation deepened after a brutal crackdown on protests that followed his re-election in an August 2020 presidential vote that the opposition saw as a sham.

More than 35,000 people have been arrested and thousands were beaten in police custody, triggering the EU and the U.S. sanctions that badly hurt Belarus' Soviet-style economy.

Valery Karbalevich, an independent political analyst, said the Belarusian authorities’ decision to expand visa-free travel for Europeans reflected an attempt by Lukashenko to reach out to the West as he prepares to seek a seventh five-year term in next year’s election.

“Lukashenko is trying to return to his policies of balancing between the West and Russia because he doesn’t want to hold the 2025 election in a ‘besieged fortress’ and wants the West to recognize its result,” Karbalevich said.

Lukashenko has survived the protests thanks to political and economic support from his main sponsor and ally, Russia, but in an apparent attempt to reduce his dependence on Moscow he recently signaled a desire to mend ties with the West.

Earlier this month, the Belarusian leader promised to release prisoners who were detained amid the post-election protests and are now seriously ill. So far 18 political prisoners have been released, including Ryhor Kastusiou, an opposition party leader who is suffering from a severe form of cancer.

Some were freed under an amnesty while others were pardoned. Those who were pardoned had to publicly admit their guilt.

Belarus' Viasna human rights group counts about 1,400 political prisoners in the country, including its founder, Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ales Bialiatski. Of those, more than 200 people are seriously ill and require medical care, Viasna said.

The United States and the European Union have welcomed the release of some political prisoners but called on Belarus to free all those jailed during the 2020 protests.

Every Friday we take an overview of the mortgage market, speaking to those in the industry before getting a round-up of the best rates courtesy of the independent experts at Moneyfactscompare.co.uk .

We could have started this week's look at mortgages with the changing forecasts for interest rate cuts - and we will get to that, but another interesting development in the market came from Gen H.

The lender announced it would start allowing friends to act as income boosters for mortgages up to 80% loan-to-value, while extending immediate family to include nieces and nephews up to 95% LTV.

It's aimed at helping people struggling to get on the housing ladder.

Stephen Perkins, MD at Yellow Brick Mortgages, welcomed the innovation - but there was a note of caution.

"The friends or family members in question need to go in eyes wide open," he told Newspage. "Having your income used to assist a friend's mortgage could have a potential impact on your own credit file and personal borrowing potential in the future."

At the top we alluded to changing interest rate forecasts - this followed higher-than-expected services inflation for June, as revealed by the ONS on Wednesday.

Prior to the data dump, the chances of a base rate cut at the Bank of England's next six-weekly meeting on 1 August was 50/50, according to markets.

This fell back to 64/36 - in favour of a hold - but as of Thursday afternoon, following new data on wage growth falling back, the market forecast was 56/44 in favour of a hold at 5.25%.

For now, the average rates being offered on the high street (bear in mind many people will be able to get better deals than this) are...

We asked Moneyfacts to hone in on house purchase rates this week (as opposed to home movers or first-time buyers).

Spokesperson  Caitlyn Eastell said: " House purchase customers will find the lowest two-year fixed rate for those at 60% loan-to-value this week comes from Barclays Mortgage, priced at 4.52%.

"Those looking to fix for longer will find the lowest five-year fixed house purchase deal at 60% loan-to-value also comes from Barclays Mortgage. The deal is priced at 4.09%."

Moneyfacts also looks at what it calls "best buys" - which considers not just the rate, but other costs and incentives. These are their top picks this week...

Wagamama is the latest high street restaurant chain to launch a loyalty scheme offering people free dishes and exclusive content.

Customers will be able to collect stamps through the Soul Club app every time they visit and spend at least £12.

Once users have collected three stamps they can claim a free side, while six will unlock a main meal. People who "level up" on the app will also earn access to more rewards such as exclusive experiences and the chance to win a monthly merchandise drop.

The stamps, inspired by the Japanese tradition of hanko stamps, are collected in a digital book.

Kay Bartlett, chief marketing officer at Wagamama, told Restaurant Online that the loyalty programme was an opportunity to thank customers "through Wagamama's ultimate love language, food".

Other high street brands offering loyalty schemes

Wagamama is not the first brand to offer its customers complimentary dishes and exclusive deals, with several big-name high street chains already launching similar loyalty programmes.

Pizza Express 's loyalty app gives customers a free treat on every visit, ranging from a free side, doughballs or a Romana pizza upgrade, depending on the level reached (bronze, silver or gold).

For fans of Zizzi , their "Zillionare's Club" programme allows customers to earn points which they can eventually swap for perks such as free food and drinks, as long as they spend at least £10.

Meanwhile, coffee lovers signed up to Pret a Mange r's Club Pret scheme get up to five hot or iced drinks a day as well as 20% off the rest of the menu for £30 a month - but this will be changing later this year.

From 3 September, Club Pret subscribers will instead pay £5 a month for 50% off five barista-made drinks a day - with this cost increasing to £10 a month from March 2025.

Asian-influenced chain Itsu  also recently launched its "Butterfly" scheme, which similarly to Wagamama, sees customers collect butterfly stamps with each visit through its app. Users are offered a free snack, zen'water and meal with their third, fifth and seventh butterflies respectively.

Costa , Caffe Nero , Nando's and Subway also offer their own food and drink reward schemes.

An increasing number of police officers in one of the country's biggest forces are said to be looking for second jobs due to rising living costs.

Sue Murphy, head of vetting and security at Thames Valley Police, said in a report that more staff and officers were looking for a second income "due to the high cost of living and high cost of housing" in the region.

According to the Bucks Free Press , the report said officers used to engage in "'hobby' type roles" - but some were now needing to generate further income to support their families.

Police officers are allowed to take on additional jobs outside their regular work if their force approves it.

According to Ms Murphy's report, Thames Valley Police is "carefully monitoring" the situation in the force, where there has been "continuous turnover of staff" and the risk of an "exhausted workforce" due to staff opting to work longer hours.

Sky News has contacted Thames Valley Police for comment.

NatWest and TSB have become the latest major lenders to announce a range of mortgage rate cuts.

NatWest will reduce five-year purchase deals by up to 0.23% from tomorrow.

Two-year purchase deals will also decrease by up to 0.14%.

Remortgage offers will fall by up to 0.18% and first-time buyer deals will be cut by up to 0.14%.

TSB has said it will reduce rates on two-year fixed first-time buyer and home mover deals by up to 0.1%, and two-year fixed remortgage offers by up to 0.15%.

The cuts come despite markets now pricing in a less than 50% chance of a Bank of England base rate cut in August - following yesterday's higher-than-expected inflation data.

Hannah Bashford, director at Model Financial Solutions, said the rate changes were "symbolic given the inflation data".

"The war of rates is still raging. Hopefully the competition between banks and a tussle to be at the top and win business for the second half of the year will mean rates continue to fall throughout the summer," she told Newspage.

Earlier this week, Virgin Money, Accord Mortgages, The Mortgage Works and Co-op Bank all dropped their rates as they started looking ahead to the Bank of England's interest rate decision in August.

Carpetright's biggest rival has moved closer to buying its troubled competitor.

Tapi, which was set up by the family who founded Carpetright, has placed a formal bid to purchase the brand name and a number of stores.

If approved, the deal could save hundreds of stores and jobs.

Carpetright put itself up for sale last week, appointing PwC as an administrator.

It currently trades from more than 270 stores across the UK.

Sky News has contacted Tapi and Carpetright for comment.

A global payments issue that hit the Bank of England this afternoon has been resolved - you can read more about this in our 15.03 post.

The Bank has just issued a statement saying a third-party supplier has fixed the problem and payments are "settling as normal".

"We expect that all payments received by the Bank today will be settled by the end of the day," it says.

"If you are concerned about a CHAPS payment you plan to make or receive today, please contact your bank, or other payment service provider."

Sky News understands the problem was not caused by a cyber incident.

The CHAPS system is used for high-value payments, meaning some house purchases have been delayed today.

One of the UK's largest plastic surgery providers has collapsed.

The Skin Group, which has more than 70 branches across the UK, was also the owner of Skin Clinics, the Harley Medical Group, Skin Brands the Skin Experts and ABC Medical.

In a message to customers, it said all the brands had "ceased trading".

Its website displayed a note saying the company had "undertaken an extensive process to secure investment to enable it to continue trading but sadly we've been unsuccessful".

"We recognise this outcome will have a significant impact on our team members and our customers and we are deeply sorry for the stress and inconvenience this has caused."

Clients still awaiting test results will be contacted as soon as possible, it added.

Communications firm Kendrick, which was Skin's PR agency, wrote in a post on Instagram that it was "blindsided" by the news.

"We have no information as yet regarding how things are being managed by Skin or the administrators, or how cancelled patient appointments / payments etc will be redressed," it said.

"We are sorry to have no news to share – this situation has blindsided us all. Should anything change in this regard, we will share relevant updates on our channels."

A "global payments issue" has hit the Bank of England's CHAPS service.

The issue is causing delays to high-value and time-sensitive payments, including some house purchases, the Bank says.

"We are mindful of the impact this is likely to have and are working closely with a third-party supplier, industry and other authorities to resolve the issue as promptly as possible," it says.

Retail payment systems and cash machines have not been affected.

It is not clear how many payments have been impacted by the issue, which the Bank has been aware of since midday.

Sky News understands a cyber incident has been ruled out.

Director of Thomas Legal, Chris Barry says the issue will affect property exchanges and completions up and down the country today.

"Whilst many completions are preset and happen earlier in the day, some will still happen between the issue being announced and the cut off of 4pm," he told Newspage.

"For many, this has just made an already stressful day even more stressful. Most contracts have a 12pm or 1pm hard time embedded, so if the payment is being made now, they are technically in breach of contract."

CHAPS is one of the largest high-value payment systems in the world.

High street banks and a number of international banks use the system to make large payments, with the system processing around £350bn a day.

It can also be used by people spending lots of money - up to millions of pounds - on items such as cars, boats and properties.

Our business presenter Ian King says it's not uncommon for CHAPS to experience problems, but the fact it's a global issue "does raise one or two eyebrows".

"The problems usually crop up when one bank or another is experiencing a particularly heavy workload, and that's when delays can happen," he says.

"Potentially, it could cause a lot of aggravation for people who are trying to complete on a housing transaction today.

"It is a big part of the financial plumbing for the financial services industry."

Has your house purchase been delayed because of the issue? If so, we would like to hear from you.

There has been no second interest rate cut by the European Central Bank (ECB), as widely expected.

The body responsible for monetary policy in the euro area maintained its current guidance on the path ahead following its latest meeting.

As such, there were no hints about what the governing council might do at its next meeting in September.

The rates announcement said that domestic price pressures remained elevated, and inflation would remain above the ECB's 2% target well into next year.

Pret A Manger is scrapping its popular five coffees a day subscription deal - but is also cutting prices of a number of products.

Under the current club offer, which has been running since 2020, customers pay £30 a month for the free drinks and a 20% discount on the rest of its menu.

But, from 3 September, Club Pret members will pay £10 a month to receive 50% off on up to five barista-made drinks a day.

The "simpler" scheme will initially launch at £5 a month for existing and new subscribers, but will increase on 31 March 2025.

The change also means an end to the 20% discount, with the chain saying it "never really got comfortable" with dual pricing.

Pret's managing director Clare Clough said: "It's almost four years since we introduced our coffee subscription at the height of the pandemic, and I'm proud of the role Club Pret has played for us and our customers since.

"It was an innovative way to reconnect with our loyal customers and introduce Pret to tens of thousands of new ones, bringing customers back into our shops with an offer that almost seemed 'too good to be true'.

"Four years and over a quarter of a billion coffees later, we have decided that it’s time to rethink how it works."

In March, the chain implemented a crackdown to prevent Club Pret subscribers from sharing free drinks.

Some customers were exploiting loopholes by sharing subscription benefits.

Since then, club members have been required to use the app to redeem their complimentary drinks.

Pret also announced that its signature 100% organic arabica filter coffee would drop from £1.80 to 99p, and its all butter croissant will also drop from £2.30 to £1.99.
