Third Eye Blind is excited to announce the fourth edition of the Summer Gods Tour. The tour will begin in June with special guests Yellowcard and A R I Z O N A and will make a stop in Cincinnati, Ohio at Riverbend Music Center on Tuesday, July 2.

On Wednesday, January 10 catch a special performance and interview on “Good Morning America.”

“I have this sense that I am feeling the same way everybody else is—that we need a summer tour so badly, like more than ever,” says Stephan Jenkins. “We need the lights, the noise, the heat and everybody up close to each other, singing as one. Can't wait."

“Third Eye Blind self-titled is a masterclass in songwriting that blew all of our minds when it released in 1997,” says Ryan Key of Yellowcard. “As 90s kids we were gifted with so much incredible music in our formative years and we are all such massive fans of the band because of that record. It doesn’t feel real yet that we will be sharing the stage with one of our all time favorite bands every night this summer.”

“Third Eye Blind was the soundtrack to so many summer adventures during high school!” adds Nate Esquite (A R I Z O N A). “My friends and I would drive up and down the NJ Parkway blasting “Semi-Charmed Life” out the windows and dreaming about one day playing PNC Bank Arts Center in Holmdel as we passed. To be a part of this tour is a dream come true in so many ways - being able to sing our hearts out to 3EB every night and playing so many incredible venues along the way.”

To commemorate the 25th anniversary of “Jumper,” Third Eye Blind is releasing the world’s first playable .999 silver-coated and .997 karat gold-coated records, in collaboration with Precious Sound. Manufactured in Germany, each 5”, 7 ounce record is playable at 33 ⅓ RPMs on any manual record player, and pressed with 1,250 tons, using groundbreaking technology. The B-side is an engraving celebrating the cover art of the self-titled album.

“25 years in, ‘Jumper’ makes a message of the value of a common heart. I’m happy that this is the first message immortalized on precious metals,” says Stephan Jenkins. “The song has gone from dark to light. It started as a noir—where I am talking to somebody telling what I would have said to them had they not jumped off the Coronado bridge. Pretty dark stuff. Now when I sing it, it is a celebration of understanding and inclusivity and you can see how eager people are to express that feeling. I love it. I love the transition.”

“Jumper” will be available in .999 silver coating ($450), in .997 gold coating ($800), and twenty-five 24 karat solid gold pressings (price available by request at PreviousSound.com ). Pre-orders will be available at thirdeyeblind.com and precioussound.com.

As always, a portion of the proceeds will benefit SeaTrees . Third Eye Blind has been on a mission to restore the kelp ecosystems of the entire California coastline and sequester carbon. Since 2017, Third Eye Blind has sought to mitigate the touring industry’s carbon impact and also banned plastic water bottles backstage, saving an estimated 17,000 bottles per tour. “We have a beautiful, bright future,” with climate action in the center of it. “That’s what I want people to know,” says Jenkins on CBS Mornings .

Precious Sound has created the world’s first playable gold, silver, and platinum records. Founded by Mark Sutton and Ursina Beerli, two friends with a deep experience in precious metals and an adoration for music. The company is based in Zurich and New York, with a production partner in Munich.

T hird Eye Blind is announcing the fourth edition of the Summer Gods Tour. The tour will begin June 8 in Spokane, and the band will tour through August 3 in Houston, with special guests Yellowcard and A R I Z O N A.

Tickets are available now at ThirdEyeBlind.com .

“I have this sense that I am feeling the same way everybody else is—that we need a summer tour so badly, like more than ever,” says Stephan Jenkins. “We need the lights, the noise, the heat and everybody up close to each other, singing as one. Can’t wait.”

Manufactured in Germany, each 5″, 7 ounce record is playable at 33 ⅓ RPMs on any manual record player, and pressed with 1,250 tons, using groundbreaking technology. The Bside is an engraving celebrating the cover art of the self-titled album.

Things To Do

third eye blind tour poster

The San Francisco-formed, now Los Angeles based sits high in the ranks of rock ‘n’ roll of a certain age thanks to its self-titled 1997 debut album, which was certified six-times platinum and launched the Top 10 hits “Semi-Charmed Life,” “How’s It Going to Be” and “Jumper.” That insured the band — led by remaining founding members Stephan Jenkins and Brad Hargreaves — an elder statesman longevity that’s allowed it to bring younger bands on the road most summers.

This year Third Eye Blind, which has released six more albums — “Our Bande Apart” the most recent in 2021 — and been through a variety of members. But it’s still going, strong according to Hargreaves, as it takes the latest edition of Summer Gods, with Yellowcard and Arizona, around the country…

* Drummer Hargreaves says Third Eye Blind’s longevity “has definitely surprised me. It’s shocking.” He adds that, “about once a year Stephan and I sit down and talk and we just can’t believe the opportunities that are still placed in front of us, the things we get involved to do, still. We definitely grinded for a lot of years to get to this point, but now it’s such a flow state it makes it easy to be part of this band. “We don’t understand it, but we’re really grateful for it.”

* This year, meanwhile, marks the 25th anniversary of Third Eye Blind’s sophomore album, “Blue,” which went platinum and scored hits with “Never Let You Go” and “Deep Inside of You.” “We had the huge first record and the pressure on us, but I love the kind of fearlessness that we had going into that second record,” Hargreaves recalls. “There’s some, like, different types of arrangements on that record as well as really free-flowing, playing. “I’m proud there wasn’t any compromise in our approach to making (‘Blue’), especially coming back off of something that was so huge.”

* Putting a set list together for concerts, Hargreaves says, is not an easy thing. “We have so many songs now that we kinda feel like we have to play, we have to kind of mash some of them together just to make it so we can get to enough songs people want to hear. So we do a lot of stuff where we get creative with our arrangements, and we’ll put three songs together over five minutes of music and just find new, creative ways to explore this music. We’re not using sequencers and fancy stuff people use (in concert) now; we go out there and make it by hand every night, and that allows us to make stuff up every night.”

* Hargreaves reports that Third Eye Blind has made a start on its next album already. “We recorded, like, six songs — the tracks, just sound. They haven’t been mixed, but the raw tracks we did sounded so amazing. We’re just waiting on Stephan to wrap some of the last lyrics for some songs and then we’ll go back in and finish them and maybe have more stuff to start on.”

* As the group approaches the 30th anniversary of its first album, Hargreaves says he and Jenkins in particular have a strong appreciation for what they’re able to still do. “We are so fortunate; we haven’t put out a record since 2021, and this is the best-selling tour we’ve ever had. But that being said, when we do work we take it very seriously, and we always are thinking about how we can do it better. We have this mentality that this is our life’s work. We’re still writing music. We really enjoy performing. It’s all really fun still, so it’s like, why wouldn’t you do it?”

Third Eye Blind, Yellowcard and Arizona perform at 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 7 at the Pine Knob Music Theatre, 33 Bob Seger Drive, Independence Township. 313-471-7000 or 313Presents.com.

'I hope we don't ruin it.' Third Eye Blind drummer gives update on band's new music

Sales for Third Eye Blind ’s 1997 debut self-titled album were a slow, consistent burn, peaking on Billboard a year after its release, and eventually reaching the Recording Industry Association of America ’s 6x platinum certification by 2001. Their post-grunge alternative rock sound is responsible for several millennial earworms, showcasing frontman Stephan Jenkins’s bouncy cadences and uniquely edgy lyrics for the pop radio stations where they saw copious radio play.

Integral to the band’s hip-hop-esque danceability are the punchy grooves of drummer Brad Hargreaves, often accented by loops, and always with expressively dynamic production. I recently spoke with him about his influences as a young musician, his power pop sound and about rumors of an upcoming batch of new songs.

Q: Y’all were great last time through town. Do you have any stories of visiting Cincinnati that I can share?

A: Last time we were there, we threw out the first pitch of the Reds game . Me and Alex, our bass player – I threw it, he caught it. We actually completed the play. We practiced. We did a good job, so that was fun.

Q: You went to UC Berkeley, and got a degree in history. What got you into history?

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

A: A professor I had there inspired me and introduced me to the threads that tie history together. You see how things are now, and then look back and figure out the pieces of history – the mistakes and misunderstandings, and also the smart things people have done to get us where we are. I like the logic of that – having a deeper understanding of today by looking back on even just the last century, which is what I really focused on in my studies.

Q: When did you decide you wanted to be a drummer as a career? Or even that it was possible to make a career as a drummer?

A: I never thought of it as a career. I knew in sixth grade that I was going to play drums for the rest of my life, and that's just the way it was. I was naive in terms of thinking about a career and a job and making money. I never really thought about that stuff.

I started playing little gigs in eighth grade and freshman year. You get 20 bucks to go play at the fair or whatever, with whatever little band. I always was able to get paid. It was something I loved. I would play for free all the time, too.

Over time, it became something that I could make a living doing. Then I got really lucky to meet Stephan – that generational songwriter that wrote songs that really resonate with people. That was the piece that elevated it to a whole different echelon, I guess.

Q: How did you meet Stephan?

A: I met him through people I knew from Berkeley. He attended Cal previously, so he had relationships in the music scene. A guy I was taking a music course with said, "Hey, my friend's in a band. They're looking for a drummer." I think the person said, "He's got the look in his eye. I think he's going to do something." And that was spot on. Steven was on a mission from the moment I met him.

Q: Were the other bands you played with before you got into Third Eye Blind mostly rock?

A: I was playing everything. I supported myself through college. My dad was giving me a little bit of money, thankfully, and I got some grants to go to school, which paid the rest of my rent and food. Then I was just playing a bunch of shows – reggae, rock, jazz, funk, R&B, everything. I really wanted to be an all-around musician and player. So I would take any gig just to learn how to play different styles authentically.

Then eventually I didn't really want to spread myself thin and play music that I didn't necessarily have a huge emotional connection to. So I dialed it back and that's right around the time I met Third Eye Blind. I was just really fortunate.

Q: The production of your drums has always been one of my favorite parts of the sound of the band. Who do you model your drum sound after?

A: All my heroes. People talk about the fancy stuff, or the beats, or parts they play, but they don't often talk about the sound they're creating. It's not just the drummer. The producers and engineers that create the sounds on the record are a huge part of what makes the sound of the band.

John Bonham listened to the sound he's creating – the way he's hitting the drum. Stewart Copeland, Phil Collins or any guy that's really famous – the sound of their drums is special and deep. And it's something that doesn't really get talked about – the way a drummer hits a drum, it's a signature.

It's a huge thing that people are drawn to, but they don't often think about what they're actually hearing. The sound and the way you hit a drum, and the physiology – the way your body is drawing the sound out of a drum is a huge thing. And every well-known drummer has a unique way that they achieve that.

Q: Stephan is a bit of a provocateur. There are lots of stories of him poking at people, and I can see how that might cause some friction in the band. Are you, generally, personally in on his exploits? Do you have any wisdom about how to deal with band drama?

A: I'm an expert (jokingly). It's difficult to be heard as a songwriter or a musician. People don't just give you a microphone. You have to demand it. It's exceedingly difficult to get heard. A lot of stuff that we get into – Stephan doesn't usually start those things. It'll be something that someone says – and his perspective is, "No, I earned a spot, and I demand to be heard." It's largely through the force of his will that we’ve achieved a lot of our success.

Q: Word is you're working on new tunes. How's that going?

A: We recorded four, five, six tracks almost two years ago. We're waiting on Stephan to finish the lyrics. The last 10% is basically 90% of the work because it's hard to tie a bow on all the defined points and profound lyrics that we’re all accustomed to him delivering.

But it's great. It's like some of the coolest sounding drums I've ever recorded – to your question earlier. The engineer did a phenomenal job. We were in Ocean Way Studio. So I hope we don't ruin it in the mix and people get a chance to hear the way that I heard them in that room when we were playing them.
