The island’s flora and fauna are particularly vibrant during these times, with bird migrations in the spring and a tranquil atmosphere in the autumn.

However, Lord Howe Island’s climate is mild year-round, making it a great destination at any time.

How many days do you need for Lord Howe Island?

A stay of around 5 to 7 days is recommended to fully experience Lord Howe Island.

This allows enough time to explore key attractions, such as Mount Gower, Ned’s Beach, and the lagoon, participate in activities like hiking, snorkeling, and bird watching, and still have leisure time to relax and enjoy the island’s natural beauty.

Longer stays enable deeper exploration and a more immersive experience into the island’s relaxed pace of life.

Do you need a car on Lord Howe Island?

No, you do not need a car on Lord Howe Island. The island is relatively small, with many places of interest within walking or cycling distance.

Bicycles are a popular mode of transport and are available for hire, offering a great way to explore the island at your own pace.

For longer distances, there are limited vehicles for hire and shuttle services provided by accommodation venues to and from key locations like restaurants and hiking trailheads.

Do mobile phones work on Lord Howe Island?

Mobile phone reception on Lord Howe Island is limited and primarily available through a single provider, Telstra. Coverage can be spotty and is generally restricted to certain areas around the settlement.

Many visitors find the limited mobile connectivity an opportunity for a digital detox.

For those needing to stay in touch, landline phones and internet services are available at accommodations and some public areas.

How long is the ferry ride to Lord Howe Island?

There is no ferry service to Lord Howe Island due to its remote location in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 600 kilometers east of the Australian mainland.

Access to the island is primarily by air, with flights available from Sydney, Brisbane, and Port Macquarie.

The flight duration from Sydney is approximately 2 hours, making it the most practical and time-efficient way to reach the island.

FAQ: Single, twin-share and more

What is twin-share, triple-share and quad-share.

The share-basis is about accommodation pricing. It does not mean that you share a room with a stranger.

"Twin-share" is where two people occupy a hotel room (open-plan style) or other accommodation such as an apartment, usually a couple or two friends. This is the normal way accommodation is priced. The price is shared between two people. Most accommodation properties (eg. hotels) offer rooms with king, queen or double beds. Most offer the option of "twin" beds as well which actually means two single beds to accommodate singles sharing, couples wanting space and so-on.

"Triple share" is where three people occupy the accommodation and share the price. "Quad-share" is where four people occupy the accommodation and share the price. Family apartments and hotel rooms usually include a king, queen or double bed and one or more single beds to handle triple and quad-share arrangements. Sometimes other bedding configurations are available as well.

What is a seasonal adjustment?

Some accommodation providers, especially in very popular holiday locations, have higher room rates for busy holiday periods (usually spring and summer holidays). We must make an allowance for those price variations if applicable.

What is a single supplement?

A "single supplement" applies to single travellers who want a room to themselves. Because the price is not shared, a "single supplement" applies. This additional amount is based on the single covering the entire accommodation component of the trip that would normally be split between two or more people.

Witness the island spectacular array of birdlife

Lord Howe Island is Australia’s premier bird-watching destination, with 14 species of seabirds breeding here in the hundreds of thousands. The island also boasts more than 130 permanent and migratory bird species, among them the Lord Howe Island Woodhen - a flightless endemic species saved from extinction by a local conservation effort. No matter what time of year you visit, you’ll witness rare species and spectacular formations.

Between November to June, hike the Malabar Hill circuit and view the Red-tailed Tropicbirds, gracefully performing their airborne courting rituals. Situated to the island’s north, Malabar has some of the best views of Lord Howe’s south end and is well worth the 2-hour return climb.

During the months of September through to May, countless Shearwaters (known locally as Muttonbirds) return to the island at dusk each day, in one of the world’s most extraordinary avian spectacles.

Walk the Little Island track between March and November to view the spectacular aerial courtship displays of the Providence Petrel. One of the world’s rarest birds, the Providence Petrel returns to the island to nest in the southern mountains and can be ‘called’ out of the air, landing at your feet!

Sooty Terns can easily be seen at Ned’s Beach common and the Northern Hills from September to January. Masked Boobies can be seen gliding and nesting along the sea cliffs at Muttonbird Point all year round - bring your binoculars.

Select the optional package class to see included activities. Optional activities are shown separately. Your travel consultant will discuss optional activities with you so you can decide what to include or leave out of your itinerary. You can also swap and change activities. A price variance might apply.

What is the difference between "Self-guided", "Group-guided" and "Fully-guided" tours?

"Self-guided" (self-drive) is a trip designed for singles, couples and groups of up to 8 people (such as two to four couples) traveling together using a single car or 7 to 12-seater van depending on group size. It means that you drive yourself on the trip. "Group-guided" means the tour is for a larger group on a bus with a professional driver and the group leader (trip organizer) as tour director. A professional tour director can be supplied if required. A "fully-guided" bus tour is operated by a driver-guide or tour director. There are usually preset departures that you can join. Fully-guided tours can also be arranged exclusively for a group and this is called a "group charter".

Can I specify the type of accommodation I want?

We will recommend accommodation to meet your preferences. All accommodation is selected using our exclusive hotel rating system . You can then change the accommodation if preferred. Often you will also have a choice of accommodation types at the recommended accommodation properties. We'll find out your preferences in the early stages of planning your trip.

Why only 400 people at a time can visit this Aussie paradise island

By CNN staff | 7 days ago

Lord Howe Island has the look of a destination ripe for overtourism , with verdant mountaintops, pristine white-sand beaches and clear-blue waters teeming with colourful fish.

Yet on this island of around 400 people, located 600 kilometres off the east coast of mainland Australia , the beaches are empty.

The only sounds on a hike through its rainforests and mountains come from the wildlife.

Why only 400 people at a time can visit lord howe island in australia

"It's what is not here that provides that experience – that is why it's so unique," said Lisa Makiiti, a sixth-generation islander who runs the boutique accommodation Bowker Beach House . There's "value of having somewhere in the world that works in the reverse to every other tourist destination. It's not bigger and better and more and more."

The secret to that unspoiled landscape is a tactic used in very few other places: limiting the number of tourists who can visit at all.

For over 40 years, Lord Howe has implemented a cap of 400 tourists at a time by fixing the number of beds available to visitors. This was to protect Lord Howe's many unique endemic species, which helped the island earn recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1982.

Best islands in Australia

Although the number was arbitrary, maintaining it has minimised environmental impacts and created a "one-for-one visitor to local" experience, said Darcelle Matassoni, a sixth-generation islander who works for the Lord Howe Island Board, the island's government.

Unsurprisingly, that means it's difficult to get there; Makiiti says Bowker has bookings well into 2026. Airfares for a return trip to Sydney can run upwards of $985, and in peak summer season, accommodation for two can range from $295 to over $4500 per night.

Why only 400 people at a time can visit lord howe island in australia

'Alien concept'

Those policies showcase a "united desire to make sure that nature comes out on top," said Dean Hiscox, who runs Lord Howe Environmental Tours . More than 85 per cent of the island is still covered in its native forest, and around 70 per cent is in a Permanent Park Preserve, meaning all development is prohibited. The residential settlement covers 15 per cent.

Visitors often wonder if there's pressure for more development, but on Lord Howe, that's an "alien concept," Hiscox said. Even the local community is effectively capped because of rules on housing. Many residents are descended from original settlers who arrived in the 1800s.

"Those families that have been here for those five, six, seven generations have always recognised how special their lifestyle is here," said Ian Hutton, a naturalist and photographer who has lived on the island since 1980. "There is that strong generational feeling of protecting their island."

Nature like nowhere else in the world

Life on Lord Howe is "like living inside a David Attenborough documentary," said Hutton, who is also the curator at the Lord Howe Island Museum, on his website .

Although it's just seven miles long, the island is densely packed with plants and animals found nowhere else. The rainforests are filled with creeping plants, orchids and birds. Atop the summit of Mount Gower – one of the most popular hiking trails on Lord Howe – sits a rare, endangered cloud forest. The island's most famous endemic export is seeds of the Kentia Palm, the world's most popular palm to grow indoors.

On the coast, people can walk by nesting colonies of the Providence Petrel, a gray and white seabird with a slightly curved black beak that mainly breeds on Lord Howe. The birds will swoop down when called and are so friendly to humans that a person can pick them up.

Why only 400 people at a time can visit lord howe island in australia

Much of the allure is the proximity to nature. Beaches are just a few minutes' walk or bike ride away from the guesthouses, making Lord Howe "the easiest holiday," said Anthony Riddle, a sixth-generation islander who co-founded Lord Howe Island Brewing Company and Lord Howe Island Distilling Company .

"You're only on a boat for five or 10 minutes, and you're already out to the main reefline. If you try and do that on the Great Barrier Reef, you might be on a boat for three or four hours and still not see nearly as much as you get to see here," Hiscox said.

Around 500 species of fish, as well as starfish, urchins and crabs, populate the world's southernmost barrier reef right by the island, according to Hutton's website. One of the best places for diving is Ball's Pyramid, the world's tallest sea stack , which sits 14 miles southeast of the main island and is surrounded by caves and waters abundant in rare sea creatures.

Like Lord Howe's residents, those who visit care deeply about preserving the island's natural world, Hiscox said. Tour guides always explain that tradition of sustainability to their guests, but they don't have to do much to convince them of its importance.

"We just simply elaborate," Hiscox said. "We tell the story about what is it that's special about Lord Howe Island. You have a captive audience who are already tuned into that philosophy, and want to know about it. You're talking to the converted."

Many visitors take that passion a step further by participating in local conservation programs. The Island Board has implemented a paid weed eradication program, and Hutton runs weeding ecotours and citizen science campaigns.

Sniffer dogs

There are also strict biosecurity procedures to protect against invasive species. All imports and visitors are checked, including by sniffer dogs. At the beginning of walking tracks, there are stations for hikers to scrub their boots to stop the spread of fungus. It's a level of intense conservation that blows people away from the moment they get off the airplane, Hutton said.

"The sniffer dogs check their bags and (visitors) find out that the dogs are not looking for marijuana, they're just looking for rats and frogs," Hutton said.

The island has carried out removals of introduced predatory feral pigs, goats and cats, and new domestic cats have been banned since 1982. Animals that were introduced to combat invasive species have also been removed.

The one recent point of contention has been a successful government initiative in 2019 to eradicate rats and mice, which were destroying native species. The initiative was widely supported, but the use of a chemical rodenticide and the regular property inspections upset some.

Why only 400 people at a time can visit lord howe island in australia

After the elimination of the rodents, many under-threat native species are now thriving. The Woodhen, a flightless bird that is one of the world's rarest, almost went extinct but its numbers have increased tenfold since the eradication, Hutton said.

Despite efforts by the government and citizens to protect the island, many of its defining features are under threat from climate change. A long run of record-breaking air and ocean temperatures fuelled by climate change and the natural El Nino phenomenon has caused several massive coral bleaching events and dieback in the cloud forest . The increasing frequency of severe weather events means their future survival is "in the lap of the gods," Hiscox said.

An isolated history

Lord Howe is today just a two-hour plane ride from the mainland, but historically the island and its close-knit community have been isolated.

For decades, the only way to get there was by seaplane. These "flying boats" first began regular flights to Lord Howe just after the end of World War II, and from the 1950s onward ferried passengers back and forth from Sydney six times a week, according to the Australian National Maritime Museum . The journey took around three hours each way. For islanders, life during that time was slow and nonmaterialistic.

"There was no television, no internet, no telephones. We lived a completely unfettered and natural lifestyle. And pretty feral, I suspect, but safe feral," said Makiiti.

"No shoes and everyone's main priority was that you could swim, but we just roamed the island in complete freedom and were outside all the time fishing and swimming and just hanging out."

After the government built an airstrip in the 1970s, use of the flying boats ceased, and "suddenly things speeded up a little bit," Makiiti said. But in many ways life on Lord Howe today is unchanged. Residents keep their doors unlocked, and there is no mobile phone service outside of home Wi-Fi networks.

That isolation has bred challenges, but islanders have found unique ways to adapt. There is no secondary school, meaning all children must do distance education or attend boarding schools on the mainland. Buying anything takes a lot of thought because all imports, including food, must come on the fortnightly freight ship. The cost of living is triple that on the mainland – one apple costs $3 and a litre of fuel and a litre of milk each cost $4, Riddle said.

Many islanders have partially offset those costs by farming and gardening – in the island's subtropical climate, they can grow most anything from root vegetables to avocados, and have native botanicals like wild lemons. There's also a bartering system.

"It's quite a nice other aspect of a connected community, where you're just sharing everything around and when you have too much of something, everybody benefits from that as well," Matassoni said.

1. Piha Beach, New Zealand

Sustainability in their DNA

Despite the challenges, residents feel lucky to live as they do – rejecting excess with a mentality that's "all about reuse, reduce and look after," Makiiti said. It's a relaxed place where people spend their free time surfing, swimming and hiking, and most everyone gets around on bicycles.

Respect for the environment is "instilled in us from a very young age," Matassoni said, "because we are stewards of that environment." Residents and visitors alike "are very conscious of just a simple thing like not dropping an ice cream wrapper," Hutton said.

Around 80% of the island's electricity is powered by a community solar grid, Hutton said. Everyone is also required to sort their own waste and bring it to the island's waste management facility. Anything that can't be reused, composted or recycled gets turned into garden mulch.

"Nobody likes red tape but everybody understands that it's all in aid of making sure that we get to keep the lifestyle we have, that we get to keep the natural environment the way it is, that we are all very lucky to be here," Matassoni said.

Makiiti says Bowker Beach House pays attention to the little details – the toiletries and coffee cups are reusable, and they even send coffee pods back to Nespresso. The eggs laid by the beach house's chickens go in reusable containers.

Islanders "always use the analogy less is more," Riddle said. "The longer we can keep it more unique like this, the more unique we are in the world."

World Heritage Journey

A World Heritage Paradise: Lord Howe Island

One of the most beautiful natural places that I’ve visited, it’s no surprise that Lord Howe Island has been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. A tiny speck of an island located off the coast of New South Wales , Australia, it is significant for a number of reasons: as an outstanding example of volcanic oceanic islands, for having the world’s most southerly true coral reef, for its endemic species and important breeding grounds for seabirds, plus for simply being so spectacular and scenic, despite its small size!

And best of all it’s possible to enjoy this World Heritage paradise. While visitor numbers are restricted and both flights and accommodation are consequently expensive, it’s a destination that will have you wanting to return (just as I do). Plus it’s the perfect destination to head to for a week to completely chill out and get away from it all. Find out more about what a trip to Lord Howe Island can offer…

Lord Howe Island Scenery

The Perfect Paradise for Chilling Out

Firstly, don’t bother try to use your mobile phone on Lord Howe Island. There’s no mobile phone reception anywhere. Although there are phones in motels if you really need to receive a call. The internet connection is also not that great (at least the last time I visited). So while you can still keep up to date, it’s better to put your online life on hold.

Forgot also about needing to drive a car around. All accommodation options will pick you up from the airport. Then it’s generally a matter of walking everywhere, hiring a bike for your stay and being mini-bused around to your dinner bookings. The island is just 11km long, with most facilities and accommodation in an even more compact area, so nothing is far away.

The local post office and noticeboard

Finally, there’s a limit of 400 beds on the island. That means there’s no big resorts or heaving bars and night clubs. Think small lodges and apartments, along with around 10 restaurants and cafes to choose from. There’s also a couple of local stores (with a small but expensive range of groceries) and a decent bottle shop. And don’t forget the BBQs on the beach plus at your accommodation.

So, what is there to do? Plenty, both on and off land, enjoying the beautiful World Heritage listed natural attractions of the island, at whatever pace your choose.

Head under the sea…

Snorkelling in the lagoon, Lord Howe Island

One of the most gorgeous parts of Lord Howe Island is the lagoon stretching along one side of the island. This is the perfect place to head for a swim or a calm snorkel off the shore. View the beautiful coral (the southernmost coral reef in the world), plus the colourful fish, small reef sharks, green turtles, rays on the seafloor, spectactular lionfish and more… Alternatively, head out on a boat trip to the furthest reaches of the lagoon, along with a guide. Or stay dry and view the coral and fish from a glass bottom boat.

Snorkelling at Ned's Beach, Lord Howe Island

The other popular snorkelling spot to visit from the shore is Ned’s Beach. Located on the opposite side of the island, it’s a bit rougher with the surf breaking onto the coral fringing the shore. One of the stand out activities is to join in the fish feeding, hand feeding a frenzy of mullet, wrasse, garfish, silver-drummer, spangled-emperor and King Fish from just off the shore in knee-deep water. Then hire a snorkel and fins if you don’t already have one, leaving a contribution in the honesty box, to snorkel along the gutters. Try to spot the anemone fish and giant clams.

Diving on Lord Howe Island

Alternatively, head to the Pro Dive shop to head out on a diving trip, whether you’re new to the sport or an advanced diver. A variety of locations are available, whether on the edge of the lagoon, all around the island, or off to the distant at the steep inclines of Bal’s Pyramid, the world’s tallest sea stack reaching 551m directly out of the ocean. More details and bookings are available on their website. Then spend the rest of the day lazing about on the beach, or…

Or have an adventure on shore…

Lord Howe Island

Lord Howe Island is criss-crossed with a network of walking trails. The most well-known hike is climbing Mt Gower, the tallest peak on the island at 875m tall. It can only be done on a guided tour . It takes a full day and will leave you grateful for a massage the next day. (Massages are available from multiple locations, including the luxurious Capella Lodge and Arajilla Retreat.) Alternatively, head up to Goat House Cave, which will still take 5 hours, or head out for shorter hikes at Malabar Hill (stopping for a snorkel at North Bay) or Transit Hill. Bird watching is especially popular and guided bird watching is available.

Golf Course on Lord Howe Island

Located near the start of the Mt Gower hike is the picturesque Lord Howe Island golf course, surely one of the most beautiful courses you’ll ever see. The 9 holes meander through kentia forests and along the seashore. Clubs are available to hire.

Other sports options on Lord Howe Island include lawn bowls, tennis, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding and surfing at Blinkys Beach.

Essential Info

Fly to Lord Howe Island with Qantaslink from Sydney and Brisbane. Only small planes are used, due to the limited runway length, but the flights still takes just 2 hours. There’s also a weekly service from Port Macquarie during part of the year.

Most accommodation can be booked directly or else organise a package with Oxley Travel . Rates generally start from around $250 per double apartment per night during the peak season (but not over the Christmas and New Year period), up to prices starting form $1500 per couple per night at the luxurious all-inclusive Capella Lodge .

The most popular time to visit is between November and April, but temperatures remain pleasant over the winter due to the maritime influence, with higher temperatures than Sydney.

9 weird & wild things to do on Lord Howe Island

Oh Lord, how have I never been here before?! That’s what you’ll think after your first visit to Australia’s own mini Tahiti. Here, volcanic cliffs drop vertically into the sea, straight into natural aquariums crammed with inquisitive fish and turtles. Just two hours from Sydney, you can escape for a weekend, or linger longer for a week or two.

G’day!

I’m Melissa (Liss) Connell and this is my personal travel blog. In this blog post, I’ve taken a break from roadtripping in The Slow Lane and flown to Lord Howe Island to become Mrs Thimios. Yep, I eloped with my love Todd Thimios to one of the most dreamy places on earth. Read on for a few of my fave experiences from our 12 days on LHI, including a few wedding pics 🙂

Few islands, surely, can be so accessible, so remarkable, yet so unspoilt. Sir David Attenborough, talking about Lord Howe Island

oxley travel lord howe island

Quick facts

How do i get to lord howe.

Lord Howe Island is almost directly east of Port Macquarie on Australia’s east coast. You can fly from Port Macquarie, Newcastle and Sydney. In fact, Sydney to Lord Howe is only two hours’ flight! There’s rumour of a direct flight from the Gold Coast being added to Eastern’s schedule soon. Check out Eastern Air or Qantaslink.

Accommodation

There are just 400 visitor beds on Lord Howe Island, so accommodation needs to be booked before arranging flights. From home stays to luxe retreats, the island caters for a range of budgets. Check out Lord Howe’s website for the full range of accoms and prices. Oxley Travel , Spacifica Travel and Eastern Air offer some great flight/hotel packages.

oxley travel lord howe island

Getting around

With limited cars on the island and a max. speed limit of 25km, most people prefer to cycle. Some of the accommodations have bicycles available and/or included, otherwise you can hire from Wilson’s at 3 Lagoon Rd, ph (02) 6563 2045 or email [email protected].

oxley travel lord howe island

What to bring?

In 1982, Lord Howe was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage property. In an effort to protect the island from invasive species, there are strict biosecurity measures such as sniffer dogs greeting each plane and boat that visit the island.

Pack lightly and be sure to bring plenty of adventure gear – hiking boots, raincoat, swimwear etc. As most food comes to the island via barge (making supermarket items quite pricey), you may also want to bring a few food items like muesli, crackers, nuts etc.

9 weird & wild things to do

oxley travel lord howe island

1. Find glow-in-the-dark fungi

There’s no denying that Lord Howe Island feels like a mystical fairyland. Everything is so vibrant, pristine and alive, your senses will be working on overdrive. And fewer things enliven the senses more than walking through a wet forest in the dark of night, torch in hand, seeking out glowing mushrooms! Well … technically, “luminous fungi”. The endemic Mycena chlorophanos and Omphalotus nidiformis appear after heavy rain and can be found within the palm forests. Look for them at Stevens Reserve (after a solid downpour).

So extraordinary it is almost unbelievable Sir David Attenborough, talking about Lord Howe Island

2. Go surfing

With only 350 permanent residents and a restricted number of 400 visitors on the island at any one time (most of whom are older folks, coming here for the bushwalking and the birds), Lord Howe’s surfing fraternity have it pretty good. There are ten main surf spots ; my pick of the bunch is Blinky Beach in the east, just next to the airstrip. You can check the surf from the top lookout when you first arrive at the beach. Just further north, there’s a great point break at Middle Beach and Ned’s also gets a few waves. Note that the surf on Lord Howe is quite fickle and inconsistent.

oxley travel lord howe island

3. Snorkel Ned’s Beach

This horseshoe-shaped bay on the north east of the island is snorkelling heaven. Walk straight off the sand into pristine, warm (about 18°C) water and you’ll encounter schools of tropical fish, hawksbill turtles and small Galapagos sharks (if you’re lucky).

Another popular activity at Ned’s is the fish feeding. Grab some food from the beach shelter and wade into the shallows to be surrounded by bluefish, mullet, spangled emperor and more. This is also a great spot for a BBQ – grab your supplies from Thompson’s Store , just a 5 minute cycle up the road.

oxley travel lord howe island

4. Get hitched

I was never keen on a big (expensive) white wedding. A small, island ceremony was an attainable dream for us at Lord Howe. It was especially significant, as my hubby Todd had spent a decade working on Lord Howe (dive instructing), so with his intimate knowledge of the place, I was able to leave all of the planning up to him!

The location: We got married at the scenic (and aptly named) Lover’s Bay on the western side of the island. This spot is gorgeous, though it’s a popular public spot, so you can expect some passers-by throughout your ceremony. We didn’t mind.

oxley travel lord howe island

The celebrant: There are a few celebrants on the island, but Todd enlisted the delightful Darcelle Matassoni. Darcelle is a very calm, patient and kind woman, who is also a member of Lord Howe’s council / board. You can reach Darcelle through her business Little Speck of Blue. Something that I learned during the process of elopement … you need to file government paperwork one month prior to your ceremony. Darcelle did this for us. All-in-all, our ceremony was simple, sweet and no-fuss. Perfect.

oxley travel lord howe island

Photographer: We didn’t hire a photographer (our three friends / witnesses at our ceremony took pics for us), but I met local photographer Chelsea Scott and her photos and relaxed demeanour are brilliant.

5. Marvel at the Providence Petrels

oxley travel lord howe island

If you’re a ‘bird nerd’ like me, you’ll love all of the avian action on Lord Howe! I was mesmerised by the Providence Petrel, a rare bird that can be found in large numbers between March to November at the end of the Little Island track, in the far south of the island. I had one swoop down and get caught in the large hoodie of my coat (see pic above, just before I released it back into the air).

oxley travel lord howe island

When you make strange noises here, seabirds fall from the sky. David Attenborough, while filming on Lord Howe Island.

6. Behold the almighty Ball’s Pyramid

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and all who gaze upon Ball’s Pyramid are surely hypnotised by its unusual shape and commanding stature. At 562 metres high, this eroded remnant of a shield volcano is the world’s tallest sea stack. Just 20km south of Lord Howe Island, you can explore it via boat on a morning dive trip or join a scenic flight with Eastern Air $350 pp min. two people – book through local surf shop Abemama. Ask about the best time for light winds and good flying conditions.

oxley travel lord howe island

7. Kayak the lagoon

World Heritage listed Lord Howe Island is home to the world’s most southern coral reef, plus the island itself is the top of an extinct volcano. The underwater landscape here is mind blowing! There’s a lagoon fringed by coral reef on the western side of the island – you can rent a kayak from the dive shed and go exploring with your snorkel gear for $30 an hour. Alternatively, there are plenty of local tours that’ll get you out on the water, such as the three hour turtle tour $80 pp.

oxley travel lord howe island

8. Climb Mount Gower

It’ll take you the better part of a day to climb it, but the views are sensational and the walk is accompanied by lively commentary, thanks to your trusty local guide Jack Shick. Jack is a fifth generation Lord Howe Islander and a third generation mountain guide. He’s climbed the mountain a staggering 2,000+ times! Rising 875m from sea level, this walk isn’t for the faint hearted and you need to be reasonably fit to complete this 14km return / 8.5 hour trek. Tours are $110 pp and you must book ahead.

oxley travel lord howe island

9. Bird watch

Ok, as a testament to my love for birds, here’s a second listing dedicated to them. Lord Howe is bird watching heaven. From migratory sea birds like petrels and shearwaters, to endemic flightless cuties like the Lord Howe woodhen, which have been recently been brought back from the brink of extinction, you’ll be surrounded by birds of all colours and sizes. And most of them don’t seem to be too fazed by humans, either! Bring your camera and binocs and marvel at this rare island paradise where nature hasn’t yet been imbalanced by human occupation.
