Mission trips–outreach for everyone

by Ron Hyink

In the classic struggle of spiritual warfare, Northview Church has more in its game plan than a few power runs up the middle of the local community. Sometimes it goes long. And whether on the field or on the sidelines, everyone on the Northview team can get involved.

K.Paul Maurer, Northview’s outreach pastor, recapped this year’s mission trips that took GO Teams, as they are called, beyond the state line to distant places such as South Dakota, Nicaragua, Ghana and even China – halfway around the world! “We did several trips last year, and they were phenomenal,” K.Paul said. “What’s exciting about GO Teams is it’s such an outside-the-box experience for a lot of people.” For those who feel a little antsy about getting off the bench, he offers some encouragement. “We had a lot of first-time people that had never been outside the United States and never experienced Third World countries and poverty-stricken cultures.”

The GO Teams help walk the team members through the process and help them see the world through a Christian lens, to open their eyes and really see the need. “When they return, they see things differently,” K.Paul said. “They see their neighbors differently; they understand opportunity to help differently.”

And the goal is usually something very simple: to paint a school building or just hold babies at an orphanage. “That may seem like a small thing, but it’s not – it’s a big thing, it makes a big difference,” K.Paul said. “So I think people come back and realize well gosh, I could do that kind of stuff back home.” We saw that with the large turnout for the Good Neighbor Weekend, he said, but it happens at a smaller level and in a different culture on these trips. “Basically it’s a small group of people practicing Life Groups for a week. I like to think of it in those terms, because we’re passionate about Life Groups here at Northview, and what we do is we train a small group to go and be the hands and feet of Christ.”

A mission trip is just a glimpse or a snapshot of what God can do with our lives throughout the year, K.Paul explained. “So don’t treat it as this one event, like the pinnacle event, but rather as a piece or a part of a grander mosaic where this is a part of who I am,” he said. “As Jesus is noted in Mark, we give our lives as a ransom, and we serve.”

There is a certain flow and rhythm to the typical mission trip, K.Paul said – something he loves to immerse himself into. “You wake up, you do a devotion, then you go serve all morning, and then you eat lunch with your team, you talk about things, you reflect on the morning, then you serve all afternoon, then you come home and eat dinner, clean up and then debrief your day, talk about how you can make it better for tomorrow, and then you spend some time in prayer and just having fun, playing card games, and then you do it all over again the next day. I mean, you talk about some great community!”

Some of the mission trips are not so typical. In Ghana this past March, for example, a doctor from another church was partnering with the GO Teams and went immediately into high gear upon his arrival. “No sooner than we got there, he was in an emergency C-section delivering a baby,” K.Paul said. “We don’t know what would have happened to that mother or baby if he had not come. God brought him there at the exact right time to take care of that specific need.”

That is just one of many examples, K.Paul added. “You think about our youth in Carmel, Indiana, going halfway around the world to share their lives with African youths, many of which were orphaned and have no hope,” he said. “They don’t think about college, they think about getting food for today. They don’t think about what kind of car they’re going to drive when they’re 30, they think about how to keep the water from coming in at the next storm when the rain falls. Our youth are going and encouraging and loving and supporting them.”

But of course the home team plays a crucial role, too. “My desire is that everyone experiences a short-term trip at some level,” K.Paul said. “The GO Team ministry is not just people going – it’s also people sending.” Whether joining in with a Pack and Pray (occurs a week before each team leaves), supporting someone monetarily, praying for people while they’re gone or encouraging them when they come back, it takes the whole church. “We’re all in this together,” K.Paul added. “I’d like to see hundreds of people come and send our teams off – helping God’s fingers go into the world. We want to have a going and sending culture here at Northview.”

For more information about GO Teams and how to get involved, contact K.Paul at [email protected] or Raegan LaCava at [email protected].

Winter Missional Trip:

Deadline - meetings - forms - updates, hello team and parents.

This page has all the dates you need to know. Under each date you’ll see a brief explanation of what’s happening/is needed by that date.

All documents that are needed will be handed out during our meeting on January 9th; however, we will also be posting them on this page (at the bottom). If you are ever looking for a document you may need, look here.

Lastly, if there is ever any update, we will post it at the top of this page labeling it (e.g. Update #1), then send out an email to the team notifying them to look at the update.

The organization we’re working with is currently in a busy season. Due to that, they are only responding to emails on Wednesday and Thursday. Please be patient with me as I find answers to our questions.

Will there be another group there at the same time?

No, it will just be Northview and YWAM’s ministers.

Is the ministry work co-ed?

The ministry work is co-ed. We can split up the groups however we want to.

What is the restroom situation?

Men and women each have their own areas for showering that are connected to their dorms. There are specific hours for showering. There will be allotted time for leaders to shower and a separate allotted time for students to shower.

The showers for the women have individual stalls with full-sized, lockable doors on each stall.

The showers for the men have individual stalls with curtains on each stall.

What is the sleeping arrangements?

Dorms. Males and Females will each have their own separate dorm areas with plenty of bunk beds.

If someone sponsors me, where should they put the money?

This question is answered in full in the “Topics for Sponsor Letter” link at the bottom of the page.

How do I pay?

Click on the “Access Your Registration Here” link directly above the “F & Q”. Once you have signed in from there, you will be able to pay.

At this meeting we’ll discuss: all deadlines from now until we leave, the type of people we’ll be ministering to in San Fransisco and what to expect, fundraising, setting our personal expectations, phone policy, and go through any questions the team has.

You’ll receive a list of deadlines you need to know, a pre-trip checklist, a packing list, and a list of topics that should be discussed if you choose to write a sponsor letter.

There will be no youth group on this day. All students and leaders are to attend this meeting. The youth leaders (not to be confused with the leaders on the missional team) will be having a separate leader meeting directly after.

By this date you must have each of these items turned in:

Food Allergens / Dietary Restrictions (please email this to [email protected] if you didn’t fill it out on the registration),

Waivers to both Northview and YWAM (located on your registration via the MyChurch app),

Health Insurance information sent in to Northview (Health Insurance Company + Member Number sent to [email protected]).

On February 5th, I’ll be resending out the packing list. This will be just over a week before we meet to leave. Otherwise, you can go to the bottom of this page for the packing list.

You are to pack only ONE bag.

The team will be attending 1st and 2nd service and our church family will be praying over us.

Your $250 is due.

The sheet selling fundraiser closes on this day.

Leading up to this day, students will be sending out their own ‘website’ to friends and family to sell sheets and other bed goods. The profits (not to be confused with the full amount of the purchase) go to their cost for the trip.

On Sunday the 21st, 28th, 4th, and the 11th, team volunteers will be running a booth at Northview for this fundraiser. We need two to four people for each Sunday. Please email or text me if you’re willing to help run the booth on one or any of those Sundays.

The link to create your website is below, in the links sections of this page.

We start the trip by spending the night at Northview. As a team we’ll prepare food for the road trip down, spend the evening with each other, and try to get as much sleep as we can, because we’re leaving bright (or dark—very dark) and early!

Remember, you can only bring one bag for the trip! Pack minimally! Pack smart!

We’ll be departing 5AM, Thursday Morning for a 12-14 hour drive.

YWAM Base Location: 357 Ellis St, SF, CA 94102

Parking Location: 333 Jones St, SF, CA 94012

We’re leaving San Fransisco at 5AM. We’re stopping for breakfast, lunch, and dinner along the way. We should be arriving at Northview ~11PM. If the time changes we will post an update, above, while we’re heading home.

HELPING YOU BECOME A DEEPLY ROOTED FOLLOWER OF JESUS

A message from pastor jesse.

Belonging to a healthy local church is essential to what it means to be a Christian, and yet getting plugged in and going to a new church can be a daunting task; please don’t let that stop you. Can I encourage you to start by coming to one of our Sunday services? We have two identical services at 9am and 11am where we worship God through singing, praying, and studying the Bible together. Come early to grab a coffee or tea and if you have a young family, try to make it to our 9am service where we offer a full children’s ministry. Sunday morning services are the best way for you to get a sense of who we are and what we are all about.

My hope is that when you do visit, you would feel the love of our God through our worship, fellowship, and hospitality and our church would become a place where you belong. Because the Church, according to the Bible, is a family. It’s a place where we encourage and grow one another in our faith, share the difficulties and burdens of life, serve and care for the needy, and enjoy the newness of life that God offers us in His son Jesus Christ. I love the Church, it is a gift from God to us, I hope our little expression of it in Mission can be a gift to you.

Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
