KIMBERLEY EXPEDITION CRUISES

Welcome to the otherworldly Kimberley. Tucked along the northwestern corner of Australia, the Kimberley is one of the world’s last wild frontiers, from rugged sandstone peaks and gushing waterfalls, to desert expanses, sunken mangrove forests, and everything in between. Cruise through Montgomery Reef as the tides rush out, leaving sea turtles dotting their heads in its midst. Search for a lustrous, masterfully cultivated pearl on a local pearl farm. Splash through the spray of King George Falls, or take to the skies in an amphibious Mallard aircraft to watch tawny sharks swim below. Better yet, engage with the original land-owning communities and their cultural rites, including guided showings of the unique Gwion Gwion artwork they have curated for centuries.

Crystal-clear waters and gleaming pearls aside, our Kimberely expeditions stand out to guests who want to travel Australia, but also desire to expedition off the beaten path. Whether you are a well-seasoned traveler, wildlife enthusiast, natural history buff, or are simply seeking a new adventure in one of the most pristine places on Earth, experience this unique corner of the world with Seabourn.

The Kimberley Expedition Port Highlights

Included Expedition Experience

King George Falls

Prepare for the highlight of your trip, cruising with our Expedition Team on a Zodiac® to explore the highest twin waterfalls in Western Australia. They will skillfully maneuver the canyon that the river carved nearly 2 billion years ago, flanked by mesmerizing sandstone cliffs, to the thundering 250-foot falls that will plunge into the waters in front of you.

This stop is full of beautiful, secluded beaches and tiny islands to explore. The real draw, though, is seeing the Gwion Gwion or Bradshaw rock art galleries that cover walls and caves in the area. Take a Zodiac® ride to Jar Island to see some of the oldest art in the world. Your Expedition Team will give you an interpretation of the drawings and a look at the fascinating history that accompanies them.

Montgomery Reef

Contemplate the raw transformation of the world’s largest inshore reef as you witness it appear and dip beneath the surface in some of the biggest tidal changes on Earth. As you explore one of the ‘greatest natural wonders of the world’, you’ll search for incredible marine wildlife in their natural habitat from your Zodiac® – dolphins, octopuses, fish, reef sharks, turtles, sea snakes and more.

Talbot Bay Horizontal Waterfalls

Expect the unexpected amongst the spectacular rock formations and lush mangroves. Most waterfalls cascade vertically, but here tides push intense currents between narrow gorges to create a horizontal effect.

Featured Included Shore Excursions

Kuri bay pearl farm, traditional face painting ceremony, seabourn's kimberley expeditions.

Cruising the Kimberley Coastline

Luxury cruises in the kimberley region, introduction.

If you do just one thing in your life, it should be to cruise the Kimberley Coast. It remains one of the world’s unique cruising regions. A Kimberley cruise allows you to experience close at hand spectacular gorges, stunning waterfalls, rugged limestone cliffs, crystal clear turquoise waters, vast river systems and unforgettable ancient art sites. The region is also a haven for bird, marine and wildlife.

Cruises operate from late March until October with various sizes and standards of vessels, catering to all types of passengers. The cruises offer a variety of land and water-based excursions each day. And some vessels have an onboard helicopter.

A reasonable level of fitness is required for some walks and a steadiness on your feet will also be of assistance, although this won’t preclude you from doing most excursions each day.

When Is The Best Time To Take A Luxury Kimberley Cruise?

If your schedule allows it, we would recommend travelling early in the season when waterfalls and gorges have an abundance of water and the vegetation is green and lush.

Here is our guide to the natural attractions you may visit:

Horizontal Waterfalls: a little taste of white-water rafting in The Kimberley! Up to 10 metre tides send huge volumes of water pouring through a narrow chasm in the land formation. You can take an exhilarating ride through this wonder.

Montgomery Reef: if you love marine life then Montgomery Reef will be your haven. The reef is rich in marine life, including dugongs, turtles, manta rays and many species of sea birds. It is Australia’s largest inshore reef of 292kms² and provides a stunning panorama of white-water rapids on the ebb tide. Many cruise guest’s favourite excursion!

Mitchell Falls: the spectacular four-tiered Mitchell Falls. Equally impressive whether flowing or dry. The falls and the surrounding Mitchell Plateau region were formed over 1800 million years ago amidst volcanic eruptions and massive upheavals in the earth’s crust. Take a helicopter flight over the falls to marvel this magnificent natural wonder.

King George Falls: the highest falls in Western Australia at 80 metres. The meandering cruise through the giant escarpments only heightens the experience when you arrive to view these majestic falls. Some of the cruise companies also offer the option of a clambering walk up the side of the falls to take in the view from the top.

Berkeley River: is known for its towering gorges, majestic waterfalls and sandstone cliffs. A cruise through the escarpments will delight the senses.late

Stretching from King Sound to Collier Bay, are a collection of around 1000 rugged islands that have earned a nickname as the Iron Islands because of their natural iron ore coloring and mineral wealth.

When to go for Cruising the Kimberley?

The most sought after attractions of the Kimberley are it’s countless waterfalls which keep blowing a continuous mist that provides a mystical cover to the clifftops and the giant boab trees. It is for this reason that April and May are said to be the most favorable months to visit Kimberley as these cascades flow speedily to the brim after the just concluded rainy season.

Having said that, any period between the months of April through to October are special as they fall within the cruising season. The monsoon season from extends from October to April. This time of the year offers plenty of cost-effective opportunities as many tours and accommodation come at good discounts.

Warm-weather expedition cruises offer adventures that feel 'more like vacation'

Portrait of Nathan Diller

At first, all I could see was what looked like a light gray stick.

But as our Zodiac boat slowly approached a mud bank in Western Australia 's Kimberley region, a thick, scaly tail and a mouth that appeared to be curled in a jagged smirk came into view. “Ladies and gentlemen, we have a crocodile,” said Robin West, general manager and vice president of Expedition Operations and Planning for Seabourn, who was driving.

The reptile was the first of six or seven saltwater crocodiles we saw during a tour of Hunter River and Porosus Creek in late June (there was some debate about the final tally among my companions). The area, also home to mangroves, mudskippers and other wildlife was one of the stops on our 10-day trip through the Kimberley aboard Seabourn Pursuit, the cruise line’s newest expedition vessel.

After about two hours in the roughly 90-degree heat, I was beat by the time we got back to the ship. I took a cue from some of the crocodiles we’d seen lounging in the sun and spent much of the rest of the day reading and admiring the view from the vessel’s shaded open decks.

Cold-weather destinations like Antarctica and the Arctic get a lot of love among expedition cruises, but there are perks to exploring a warmer locale.

Expedition plus pleasure cruise

My Kimberley itinerary combined the kinds of educational and immersive activities nature lovers expect from an expedition with elements that felt like a pleasure cruise.

“It can definitely be very relaxing,” said Claire Maguire, a travel agent and franchise owner at Cruise Planners.

The temperatures hovered between 80 and 90 degrees during my trip, with sunshine nearly every day. As a result, when I wasn’t in a Zodiac or exploring various ports on foot, I often sat on my suite balcony or ate meals at outdoor tables by the ship’s infinity pool, surrounded by sandstone peaks and turquoise water.

By contrast, when I took an Antarctica cruise in December, the temperatures were milder than I expected but still too chilly to comfortably spend much time on the outer decks.

“It does feel more like a vacation, I think,” Maguire said. “Sometimes the cold weather can seem a little bit more like work. This one is a little bit more laid back, it's slow-paced, it's relaxed.” On my cruise, we only disembarked once a day most of the time, giving guests time to attend lectures about the region from expedition team members, visit the spa or gym, or just laze around.

The luxury line also pampered guests in a way that made the adventure more cushy.

One afternoon, after venturing to see the Horizontal Falls in Talbot Bay – a sideways waterfall effect caused by water squeezing through cliff passages – we cruised toward another Zodiac that our guide said may have broken down. But as we approached the boat, occupied by other members of the expedition team and crew, they presented us with Champagne and popsicles (that wouldn’t be the last time either).

What are the other benefits of warm-weather expeditions?

Different destinations mean different gear, and with warm weather, you can leave long underwear and parkas at home.

“You obviously have to pack a lot less specific clothing,” said Maguire. “That’s another advantage. You don’t have to take a lot of heavy layers or anything like that, which is nice.”

Getting in and out of Zodiacs felt less of a production than in Antarctica, for instance, where I had to dress in base layers, waterproof pants, boots, a hat, and more every time I disembarked.

There are some essentials travelers should have, though, including sunscreen, sunglasses and a sun hat. I forgot that last one and would have likely burned were it not for the kindness of other folks onboard with extras. Seabourn and many other operators have packing lists for reference, as well.

Maguire also recommended wearing long sleeves, particularly if you plan to swim. Warm-weather destinations generally make getting in the water easier and more pleasant (no disrespect to the polar plunge ). We even did so in the Kimberley, where swimming is only possible in select places due to crocodiles.

One morning, we went snorkeling at Ashmore Reef in water that had been hovering around the high 70s. Roughly 45 minutes of swimming among coral, fish and blue sea stars passed in what felt like 10.

And if penguins and polar bears are the faces of Antarctic and Arctic expeditions, respectively, crocodiles may hold that distinction in the Kimberley. But there’s plenty more for wildlife enthusiasts to watch for, from brahminy kites to nurse sharks.

How much does an expedition in Kimberley cost?

Prices vary by operator, sailing date, room category and other factors, but a 10-day Kimberley expedition with Seabourn departing on June 27, 2025, starts at $10,999 per person based on double occupancy. The fare includes meals, wines and spirits, Wi-Fi and more.

Nature can make you feel small: You should seek that feeling when traveling

Where else can I take a warm-weather expedition?

The Kimberley’s not the only option if the cold isn’t your thing. Cruise operators offer itineraries in the Galapagos Islands off the coast of Ecuador, and Indonesian islands like Bali and the Raja Ampat archipelago, which Maguire noted “is an amazing location for snorkeling and diving.”

She also recommended destinations like Africa, where she said guests could combine a cruise with a safari on land, and the Mediterranean, where she went hunting for truffles and visited a horse farm on a recent expedition.

“You definitely do more off-the-beaten-path activities (than a regular cruise),” she said.

This is a territory that is two-thirds the size of France and has 38,000 people living in it. Half are aborigines descended from Australia's first inhabitants. These distant ancestors have bestowed a culture and  cave art  with an ongoing sense of mystery. This is a region that you fly over or approach by sea because it is  unspoilt and wild . Red soil, ochre cliffs, feisty inlets, roaring waterfalls, saltwater crocodiles... Welcome to the  Kimberley .

In the spirit of reconciliation, PONANT acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community. Fly over the Bungle Bungle Range

Fly over the Bungle Bungle Range

Wyndham , the northernmost town in the Kimberley region, is a special gateway. This area with fewer than 800 inhabitants makes the ideal starting point for exploring Purnululu National Park . Having been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2003, it is famous for the Bungle Bungle Range and its ochre and grey striped sandstone domes. There is nothing better than a panoramic flight to admire the beauty of this landscape created by erosion over a period of 20 million years.

Fly over the Buccaneer Archipelago

Fly over the Buccaneer Archipelago

In the west of the Kimberley, the land seems to break into pieces and slide into the sea. The result is a jagged coastline and no fewer than 800 islands forming the Buccaneer Archipelago , leading to finely cut panoramas. The best way to take in this unique geography is to take to the air. Soaring in a period Grumman Mallard amphibious aircraft , the views over this two-billion-year-old terrain are truly amazing. The undulating desert coast gives way to dots of land with red cliffs plunging into sapphire waters. Being so hard to access, this area has found itself protected... The nearest town is half an hour away by plane.

Sail along the King George River

Sail along the King George River

One of the Kimberley's marvels, the King George River is particularly stunning. Travellers turn into real explorers here. Guided by naturalists who are experts in the region, Zodiac® boats sail along the ochre, red, purple, pink and orange rock faces in the heart of 80-metre gorges. In the distance, the twin King George Falls rumble away. They are so vertical it gives you vertigo. The water hurtles down the cliffs. Watching is a hypnotic experience. Time seems to stand still, giving everyone the chance to enjoy the moment.

Discover cave art

Discover cave art

With 10% of the Kimberley having been systematically explored by archaeologists, hundreds of thousands of painted motifs in tunnels and on rocky walls have been found and listed. It is believed that some were done 20,000 years ago and are examples of Gwion Gwion cave art . This is characterised by its fine brushstrokes and rare aesthetics which tell us more about how these old civilisations lived. Clothes, food, arms, tools, ceremonies, trade... These precise paintings are a mine of information for researchers. One of the highlights of a trip to the Kimberley is enjoying this art, which is some of the world's oldest.

Enjoy seeing unique tidal phenomena

Enjoy seeing unique tidal phenomena

Water is king at Collier Bay . Gigantic tidal surges have created these unique landscapes, to photographers' delight. These surges can reach over 14 metres in width and are some of the world's biggest. They cause special phenomena, like at Montgomery Reef : the biggest coastal reef on the planet. When the water pulls back, this creates strong currents and little waterfalls. In Talbot Bay , when the tide comes in or goes out, the waves rush into a bottleneck. This water then flows away, creating "horizontal waterfalls" .

Unique features

The saltwater crocodile or estuarine crocodile is the world's biggest reptile. Males can grow to over five metres long and weigh several hundred kilos. These animals mainly live in Oceania, northern Australia and South East Asia.

Australia's aborigine cuisine revolves around bush tucker . This means all the animals and plants in the Australian bush that allow humans to survive in this difficult environment. Kangaroos, emus, seafood, honey, berries, worms, lizards and snakes are foods sought by hunter-gatherers.

Myths and legends

North-west Kimberley is home to magnificent decorated caves representing Wandjina, the powerful rain spirit . Poignantly moving ochre figures and silhouettes enhanced with touches of black, red, yellow and white leap out from the walls, alone or in groups, standing or lying. No need for mouths on their round, large-eyed and fine-nosed faces, encircled with headdress-evoking halos, for the extraordinary power of these supernatural entities to express itself. Both Aboriginal people and visitors are required to observe a strict protocol in order to approach them, and only the initiated are allowed to maintain these frescoes and create new representations of the spirit in order to continue the tradition of this ancestral sacred art , which is considered to be the most ancient in the world.

Book . Leafing through Australie aborigène (Aborigine Australia) will make you want to visit the country. This stunning photo book's subtitle, Walkabout , is a reference to the rite-of-passage journey taken by aborigines across Australia, following in the footsteps of their mythological ancestors. The Kimberley and other areas are beautifully represented in the book in photos taken by Sandrine and Frédéric Mouchet, who spent two years immersed in these isolated lands.

Music . The first rock group, in the 1980s, to combine aboriginal sounds with contemporary music, Yothu Yindi (which means “mother and child” in Yongli), define themselves as artisans of cultural reconciliation. Prior to becoming a pop star, the group's singer, Yunupingu, was the first Aboriginal person ever to be a head teacher. He developed innovative teaching methods designed to suit the distinctive characteristics of Aboriginal people.

Film . In Undermined, Tales from the Kimberley , director Nicholas D. Wrathall examines what will become of the Kimberley and the 200 aborigine tribes who live there. A range of farming and industrial projects in the region are challenging their traditional lifestyles.

Facts and figures

Some experts estimate that early aborigine cave art dates back 20,000 or 30,000 years . The term "aborigine art" includes these primitive cave works as well as creations by contemporary artists influenced by this age-old culture. It is therefore the oldest ongoing artistic tradition in the world.

The Kimberley season runs from April - September, but even within that period, there are prime times for certain wildlife, natural phenomena, experiences and temperatures. Let us help you pick the best time to visit according to your interests with this helpful chart.

When is the best time to visit the Kimberley?

From June to October each year, the world’s largest pod of humpback whales, up to 40,000 , give birth in the pristine waters of the Kimberley Coast. These majestic mammals make the 13,000km round-trip from Antarctica each year to the warmer waters of the Kimberley to birth calves before gradually making their way home to cooler waters.

Day 1: Darwin | depart 7:00pm Reaching up towards the equator, a full 2,000 miles from Sydney and Melbourne, Darwin is an enchanting and exotic Australian destination. Explore via airboat to look down on the veiny waterways of the mist-laced Kakadu National Park. The sounds of chattering birdlife and the gentle splash of fountains and waterfalls will fill your ears in George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens. The sunshine and famous tropical pink sunsets mean many visitors naturally gravitate to the city's soft sands to relax at spots like pretty Mindil Beach, as evening approaches. The adjoining market is filled with souvenirs and crafts stands and is the perfect great place to enjoy some fiery Asian flavours. This relaxed unassuming city has a deeply resilient backbone, however, and you can explore the museums to learn more of the World War II's impact on Darwin, as well as the devastating effects of one of Australia's worst natural disasters, Cyclone Tracy in 1973.

Day 2: Koolama Bay | arrive 12:30pm. depart 6:00pm. Named after the ship that had been beached here after a Japanese aerial attack during World War II, Koolama Bay is the starting point for a Zodiac cruise to reach the King George Falls, one of the Kimberley’s most magnificent natural wonders and at 260 feet (80m), the twin cascades are among the highest in Australia. Koolama Bay and the river weaving through an amazing landscape of near vertical red rock formations will offer a parade of wildlife - saltwater crocodiles and amazing birdlife, including giant raptors and the Brahminy Kite.

Included Shore Excursion - Zodiac Cruise with Silversea Expedition team

Day 3: Swift Bay | arrive 7:30am. depart 6:00pm. Australia’s jaw dropping Kimberley region shelters some of the oldest collections of rock art. This ancestral art depicting warriors, animals or nature is an authentic testimony to Aboriginal’s culture, rituals and traditions. Discover astonishing Wandjina art galleries and wake up the adventurer in you. A quick zodiac ride on the turquoise water gives you a chance to admire the coast’s spectacular scenery, while a short walk across the rocky and wild landscape - 250m from the landing site, leads you to the historic and artistic caves. In these ancient galleries, two different styles of rock art can be observed: the Gwion Gwion style, represented by long and skinny human-like figures and the much rounder Wandjina style. You’ll need to keep your wits about you if you want to admire the most spectacular of the ancient paintings though, as it is painted on the ceiling and only visible by lying down, with the ceiling only about a metre above your head. Those who do wiggle in to be the best position will fully appreciate the artwork’s enormous scale and size and surely won’t be left indifferent.

Selected Shore Excursion - Hiking with Silversea Expedition team

Day 4: Ashmore Reef | arrive 1:30pm. depart 6:00pm. With its diverse shades of blue, its underwater wonders and feathery friends, Ashmore Reef Marine Park is one of Australia’s most beautiful natural treasures. Covering 583 square meters, the three tiny islands and their surrounding waters are home to an oasis of 40 bird species including crested terns, white-tailed tropic birds and greater frigate birds as well as thousands of migratory shorebirds coming from very far places like Siberia! On the ocean side, the colourful reef is home to around 500 species of fish, marine turtles, dugongs and many playful dolphins. Given the rich and fragile environment, Ashmore Reef has been declared a Sanctuary zone, providing the highest level of protection for the wildlife and minimising disturbance from human activities. Only scientific research is permitted however visitors can access to the Recreational Use Zone, which includes a small area of the West Island

Day 5: Adele Island, Kimberley | arrive 12:30pm. depart 6:30pm. Appearing like a charmed apparition, Adele Island is an oasis of tranquillity peeking out of the Indian Ocean, 65 miles away from Kimberley’s rugged coast. At the core of the Island is a gorgeous tidal lagoon, rich in biodiversity and a thriving ocean outpost for breeding birds and turtles. The hospitable waters form a lively nursery for young humpback whales and bottlenose dolphins. Keep your wits about you though, there may also be beady-eyed crocodiles, slaloming menacingly. Encounter beautiful sea turtles, diverse fish life, and remarkable birds like the lesser frigate bird and brown booby, all while exploring this pristine island gem. Endless fields of immaculate coral reefs coat the seabed, alive like underwater cities, bustling with life and characters. With only the sounds of rhythmic waves sloshing, sandy footsteps crunching and vocal bird life singing out, melodic Adele Island hits all the right notes.

Day 6: Buccaneer Archipelago Region | arrive 7:00am. depart 6:30pm. One of the Kimberley’s finest secrets, Buccaneer Archipelago is made up of around 800 islands protecting the mainland from the huge 12 metre tides and astonishing speed of the Yampi (or, in traditional Aborigine, “Yampee”) Sound. The speed and power of the water may not make for pleasant bathing, but does however result in fantastic natural phenomena. One fine example is the horizontal reversible waterfall in Talbot Bay. William Dampier sighted the Archipelago in 1688 but it would not be until 1821 that the it would become known as Buccaneer (a term coined by Captain Phillip Parker King) "in commemoration of William Dampier’s visit to this part of the coast". Enterprising individuals were initially attracted to the Buccaneer Archipelago in the 1800s due to the superior pearling as well as the rich iron ore deposits. Some of the richest iron ore in the world is extracted here to this day.

Included Shore Excursions - Zodiac Cruise with Silversea Expedition team - Hiking with Silversea Expedition Team

Day 7: Freshwater Cove, Kimberley | arrive 7:00pm. depart 12:00pm. Adjacent to Montgomery Reef, but on the mainland is Freshwater Cove – locally known as Wijingarra Butt Butt. Aboriginal guides will welcome guests with a traditional ochre welcome on the beach. The rock formations that can be seen along the shore represent spiritual ancestors relating to the great Wandjina battle. Caves with rock art are found in the vicinity, but can only be visited with local guides.

Included Shore Excursions - Kimberley Indigenous Experience - Hiking with Silversea Expedition team

Montgomery Reef | arrive 6:00pm. depart 6:30pm The reef, some 300 square kilometres in size, can show an amazing tidal change of up to four metres. When the tide drops, the reef seems to rise out of the water however at low tide, a river is exposed that allows access to an amazing semi-submerged world. When the tide continues to ebb, Zodiacs will be used to travel to the edge of the reef surrounded by cascading waterfalls up to three metres high. Continuing up the river one is able to look at the abundance of reef birds and sea creatures including turtles and manta rays. A visit to Montgomery Reef is very much tide-dependent, but truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Day 8: Hunter River Region, Western Australia | arrive 7:00am. depart 6:30pm Home to an immense mangrove system surrounded by soaring red sandstone cliffs, narrow mangrove channels sheltering numerous bird species, mudskippers, fiddler crabs and the infamous saltwater crocodile; the most aggressive crocodile species known to man. Naturalist Island at the mouth of the river has a stunning stretch of sandy beach that makes a perfect landing site for small helicopters that can pick up visitors wishing to explore some of the Kimberley’s vast interior. The highlight inland is the famous Mitchell Falls where four tiers of waterfalls plunge into deep pools that flow out into the mighty Mitchell River. The headwaters of the falls are cool and a dip in the fresh water is a welcome reprieve from the heat of the heartland.

Selected Shore Excursion - Mitchell Falls by Helicopter

Day 9: Vansittart Bay (Jar Island) | arrive 7:00am. depart 5:30pm Located near the northern tip of Western Australia, the bay was named by Phillip Parker King during one of his four surveys of Northern Australia during the early 19th century. Interesting parts of the bay include Jar Island and the opportunity to view Bradshaw (Gwion Gwion) and Wandjina styles of rock art. An area with an example of a more recent history is the Anjo Peninsula. A beach landing and a short hike across a lagoon or, depending on tides, a walk around the lagoon will lead to a World War II site. An almost intact wreck of an old airplane, a C-53, can be seen there.

Testimonials

We thoroughly enjoyed our adventures and were thrilled to see the waterfalls flowing so well! Thanks to all of your great crew and we will certainly recommend Odyssey Expeditions to friends and family!

Kind regards

I would just like to say the trip Gillian and I had was simply put, sensational.  The other passengers were great and the crew, Mike, Bob, Ben, Cindy and Jayden were faultless.  I now have to try and remove the 3 kgs that Cindy's fab meals put on.  I will certainly recommend the Odyssey to anyone

Dear Odyssey,

I wish to let you know how wonderfully we were looked after by Cat, Bob, Jayden. Kane and Jesse and others involved in giving us a lifelong experience in the beauty of the Kimberley coast. They went out of their way to make sure that we were safe, happy, yet encouraging us to benefit from the most beautiful places I think I have ever seen, and I have been to many parts of the world. The kindness shown to me personally was beyond the call of duty. Thanks to the captain and each member of the crew I was able to do well beyond my expectations.

Please pass on this message to these lovely people. The beautiful Odyssey experience will remain in our hearts and minds forever.

Our warmest wishes and gratitude go to each and every one of you.

Thank you for the information regarding the photos.

Thanks also to you and your entire team for providing us with a fabulous experience and the chance to make new friends with the passengers, and the crew.

Thanks also for looking after our car and caravan while we were on board.

We really enjoyed the experience of the Kimberley from the ocean made all the more special by the work of the crew on board.

Best wishes to you and all the Odyssey team.

Just a quick note to thank you for looking after Jane and I on our Odyssey adventure. Truly an unforgettable experience that made my 65 th birthday celebration a wonderful memory. Great food, itinerary and company. I’ve already recommended it to our friends who have been keen to find out about our trip.

All the best for the season

I’d like to take this opportunity to thank you for an outstanding cruise and for the extra care your staff took with Shirley because of her Alzheimer’s. We both had a sensational time and will certainly consider doing one again. We have also recommended it to our friends.

Best wishes to you

Column: Is Harris or Trump fighting for workers? The union crowd in Detroit says it all

Tim Walz and Kamala Harris with an enthusiastic crowd

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

I grew up in a union family in Detroit. Health insurance, food on the table, roof over our heads — as kids we took these for granted, but history tells us they were not easily earned, and work stoppages are perennial reminders that they are also hard to keep. As children we were unaware of the constant tension between labor and capital. All we knew was sometimes we ate at Red Lobster on Sundays, and sometimes we were lucky if we ate at all.

That is what greeted Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz when they landed at the Detroit airport on Wednesday for a rally with the United Auto Workers: the hopes and struggles of the Midwest’s working class. The campaign believes there are an estimated 2.7 million union members in the battleground states.

Harris and Walz will be here often.

“Michigan just flipped back to middle-class workers,” said Jonathan Smith, a member of the United Food and Commercial Workers union, at the event. “We’re not going back.”

In 2013, the Republican governor, Rick Snyder, made Michigan a “right to work” state , allowing people to work in union-represented roles without paying into the union. He promised this would bring more jobs, but the move faced huge protests — and over the next decade, we learned who was right.

Granderson: Picking Tim Walz, Harris shows how she aims to win

If she thought she needed to woo support away from Trump, she would have gone with a different vice presidential choice. What does this guy bring to the ticket?

Aug. 6, 2024

Michigan workers saw a decline in their way of life, but not the rise in jobs that was promised. In 2023, the Democrat governor, Gretchen Whitmer, corrected her predecessor’s error. She, like many of the speakers who took the stage at the Detroit rally, made sure to thank union leaders for organizing the huge crowd. Led by members of the United Auto Workers, who wore red, the thousands corralled in and around an airport hangar included a number of brightly colored union T-shirts.

With fewer than 90 days to go before the election, what better way for Harris to kick off the first full day with her new running mate than with voters she knows are used to fighting? And she isn’t new to this bloc or their causes.

Opinion: Republicans’ ‘Tampon Tim’ joke about Walz is already backfiring

The right wants to tar Tim Walz for legislation requiring Minnesota public schools to provide menstrual products, but that’s a mainstream, bipartisan idea. The governor ends up looking more like an icon than a punchline.

Aug. 7, 2024

In 2018, as a senator, Harris showed her support for the striking University of California employees by withdrawing as Berkeley’s commencement speaker. In 2019 she joined a UAW picket line in Nevada. The Biden administration transition team included Teresa Romero from the United Farm Workers and Lonnie Stephenson from the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Harris is not just comfortable in this setting. The faces in the crowd shape her policy proposals and inform her messaging. Her selection of Walz reiterates her commitment to labor and the working class.

FILE - In this Nov. 4, 2018, file photo, then-Georgia Republican gubernatorial candidate Brian Kemp, left, walks with President Donald Trump as Trump arrives for a rally in Macon , Ga. President Trump said Sunday, Nov. 29, 2020 he was “ashamed” for endorsing the Republican governor of Georgia after he lost in the state to Democrat Joe Biden. Trump said on Fox News that Gov. Brian Kemp has “done absolutely nothing” to question the state’s results.. (AP Photo/John Bazemore, File)

Granderson: Top Republicans know better than to back Trump

Gov. Brian Kemp of Georgia saw up close that the former president tried to overthrow democracy. And yet the governor’s goal is ‘saving our country from Kamala Harris.’

Aug. 5, 2024

As for her opponent, former President Trump purports to be pro-labor, but his businesses have left a trail of aggrieved and unpaid workers over the decades , including union members. We’re talking carpenters, electricians, plumbers. In fact, his enterprises racked up more than 20 violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act for not paying overtime or minimum wage. As president, he flooded the National Labor Relations Board with known union-busters. In 2004, he crossed a picket line to appear on “The Apprentice.” His current campaign chose not to hire union stagehands … and ended up with a poorly hung sign that appeared to be endorsing Harris for president .

Last fall Trump held a rally in Michigan at a nonunion plant while the UAW was fighting for a living wage. At that event Trump bashed the Biden administration for pushing automakers toward electric cars, claiming the shift would decimate the Detroit economy. Then Elon Musk endorsed him. Now Trump says he has no choice but to like electric cars because of it. So much for EVs destroying the city, right?

When union families in the Great Lakes region were fighting to put food on the table, they got support from Biden and Harris. Trump just came looking for votes.

“I was satisfied with Biden at the top of the ticket, but with Kamala Harris there is a real excitement,” Detroit native Shana Norfolk told me on Wednesday. “She understands what it’s like to live paycheck to paycheck because she’s been there with us. I believe she is going to fight for civil rights, women’s rights, worker rights, equity and inclusion … because she gets it.”

That’s how Harris has been able to build so much momentum organically. She is relatable to many different kinds of Americans because she speaks to values needed for the coalition. And it starts with compassion.

At one point, Walmart workers who relied on public assistance cost taxpayers more than $6 billion a year . At the same time, the company and its shareholders enjoyed nearly $8 billion in tax breaks and subsidies. Now even though Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said after the Jan. 6 attack that Trump’s big lie was to blame for the division in the country, Walmart continues to donate to Republicans who were election deniers. Presumably for the tax breaks.

Earlier this year the NLRB accused Walmart of illegal tactics to prevent employees from unionizing in Eureka, Calif . Clearly the tax breaks are not enough. Project 2025, the playbook conservatives want to employ on Day 1 in a possible second Trump term, includes initiatives to erode organized labor.

Health insurance, a roof over their children’s heads, food on the table — under Trump, all the staples of the middle class would be left to the whims of the 1%. No wonder there was such a passionate crowd filling the hangar at the Detroit airport for Harris and Walz: The 99% hope that this new Democratic presidential ticket can stop that from happening.

There’s no destination on a Scandinavian cruise that’s more mysterious and enduring than St. Petersburg, Russia. An enigma of historic and religious sites and the birthplace of of some of literature’s greatest works, here you’ll explore museums housing some of the biggest and best art collections in the entire world. St. Petersburg is an intellectual city, a cultural capital where arts, music, and creativity thrive despite the bitter winters. May to July brings about the White Nights, a short time in St. Petersburg where the sky is completely lit up throughout the entire day, making late spring and early summer a prime time to visit St. Petersburg.

Make a day of museum hopping from the Hermitage Museum onto the Dostoevsky Museum, finishing the afternoon off at the Russian Museum. If church tours are more your thing, check out the ornate domes of the Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood, or take photos of the beautiful Nikolsky Cathedral. Vodka tastings? You bet Russia’s most famous export is alive and well in St. Petersburg, too. Whatever you fancy, Russia’s cultural capital will captivate you on your St. Petersburg cruise.

With the safety of our guests and crew always our top priority, we are removing St. Petersburg, Russia from upcoming itineraries in 2024, due to the current situation in Ukraine. Our thoughts are with all who are impacted by this conflict.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to st. petersburg, hermitage museum.

There are over 350 rooms in the world-renowned Hermitage Museum, so you’ll find it impossible to see everything in the short time you have there. When you cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia, come here with a plan on how to see your favorite artists and time periods on display here.

Church of Our Savior on Spilled Blood

Elaborate and breathtaking, this Russian Orthodox cathedral is one of the most recognizable sights in all of St. Petersburg. The mosaics and colorful domes are what the cathedral is famous for, along with it being the site of an assassination attempt of Tsar Alexander II. Beauty and Russian history collide as you explore the church.

Russian Museum

Even if you were previously uninformed about Russian art, the Russian Museum is the perfect primer for the local art scene. Spend the day perusing the museum at your leisure, then bring all sorts of art history tidbits back to the ship with you.

Peterhof Palace

This set of palaces and gardens is yet another example of St. Petersburg’s opulence. Meant to invoke a similar reaction as the Palace of Versaille, Peterhof stands up to the hype. It’s open from 9am to 7pm Sunday through Friday, and closed Mondays.

Top things to do in st. petersburg, tour the palace of rasputin’s famous murder.

The elaborate Yusupov Palace along the Moyka River was built for Russian aristocracy in the late 1700s, and it encapsulates the art and culture of Russia at the time. Don’t miss a tour through the very castle where Rasputin was assassinated. It’s a harrowing place where you’ll quickly get a taste of the wealth and status of the day.

See the Winter Palace

The Winter Palace also comprises part of the Hermitage Museum, but you could easily spend your entire time there simply walking the colorful grounds, where the palace glitters in gold and teal blue. Russian emperors lived in the Winter Palace from the 1700s until the 1900s.

Explore the Dostoevsky Museum

Famous Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky lived in St. Petersburg for much of his life, and the Dostoevsky Museum was erected in the apartment where he lived from 1878 to 1881. Today, you can walk in his footsteps and experience his apartment for yourself. It’s a must-see for literary types and fans of Russian literature.

Top Food and Drink Spots Near the St. Petersburg Cruise Port

Address: Nevsky Prospekt 47, St Petersburg

Classic Russian cuisine comes with a side of history at Palkin, which was also the site where famous Russians like Dostoevsky, Tchaikovsky, and others once sat and broke bread together. Try the fried foie gras, the salmon caviar, or the boar and venison dumplings. Adventurous, filling dishes are the name of the game here.

Address: Petropavlovskaya St., 4, St Petersburg

You might not have tried truly authentic Russian food before, but Chekov is the place to change that. Inside, you’ll feel transported back to the 19th century, though the menu is decidedly modern. Try the marinated brandy trout fillet or the chicken liver pate. Delicious dumplings, called pelmeni , are stuffed with meat and made in-house daily.

L’Europe Restaurant

Address: Mikhaylovskaya Ulitsa, д. 1/7, Saint Petersburg

Located within the Grand Hotel Europe is a fine dining experience like no other in St. Petersburg. It’s one of Russia’s oldest restaurants, which only adds to the charm of getting to spend an evening here. Sunday brunch is a favorite. Every Wednesday, dancers and performers move to the classical sounds of Tchaikovsky during the dinner service. There is a wine-pairing menu as well as an elaborate seven-course menu including dishes like duck confit, salmon tartar, red caviar, and a four-cheese tortellini.

Culture & History of the St. Petersburg Cruise Port

Tsar Peter the Great founded the capital city of St. Petersburg in 1703. Ever since, St. Petersburg has become a cosmopolitan hub for arts, culture, and style. Famous authors like Nikolai Gogol and Dostoevsky were inspired and influenced by their times living in the city, which is immortalized in their literature. Though the climate was harsh and the winters almost unbearable, St. Petersburg remained a place where immigrants and visitors flocked to for hundreds of years. Today, it’s the second-largest city in Russia behind Moscow, home to a population of over 5 million people.

St. Petersburg Port Facilities & Location

When your cruise to St. Petersburg, Russia docks in port, you’ll have to quickly go through immigration before continuing on to explore everything the city has to offer. The port, called the Marine Facade, is a passenger port equipped to handle wide berths and plenty of cruise traffic.

Transportation in St. Petersburg

The metro system in St. Petersburg is comprehensive and runs daily until midnight. Otherwise, biking and taking a taxi or shuttle bus from the port into the center of town are great bets for getting around during your St. Petersburg cruise stop. It’s about a 30-minute drive from the cruise port to the city center, or around 45 minutes to get to the Hermitage Museum.

Shopping Near the St. Petersburg Cruise Port

You won’t be hard-pressed to find some of Russia’s enduring souvenirs, from famous nesting dolls to Russian vodka, chocolate, and other goods that tourists love to take back home with them. These souvenir shacks and stands are scattered throughout the city, making it easy to shop when you feel like it. But St. Petersburg isn’t all kitschy wares. There’s also a growing boutique shopping scene here, like the impressively large Galeria or a smattering of vintage shops selling clothes dating back to the days of the Soviet Union.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The local currency in Russia is the rouble (stylized as R), and you’ll find credit and debit cards are used all over the place here. Still, it’s handy to have a little bit of cash in case you need it. ATMs are widely available, too. Tipping your taxi driver isn’t expected, but you can round up or leave behind a few R if you’re particularly happy with the service you received. At restaurants, leaving 10% is customary.
