Trails utilized may include variations of the Hermit-Bright Angel loop, Hermit-Boucher loop, and New Hance-Grandview loop (each ranging from 22 -30 miles). Please note mileage is not indicative of difficulty! Individual experience levels, group size, as well as permit allowances, will determine which routes will be run on which dates. While the exact distance, camp locations, and direction of each trek may vary, here is a representative itinerary.

Evening before departure, pack-check overnight in Flagstaff

On the evening before your trek start date, we’ll convene at 6:00pm for a one hour group orientation and pack-check in the main lobby of Little America Hotel in Flagstaff, AZ. At orientation we’ll hand out backpacks, tents and sleeping bags to those who requested them. We’ll also get to know our team, preview the trail and talk safety.

grand canyon charity trek

Day 1 – Intense downhill

After reconvening in the lobby of Little America Hotel, Flagstaff at 5:00am, we’ll head out to the trailhead where our hike begins with a steep 3,000′ descent toward the Tonto Platform, an inner plateau within the Canyon roughly 1,000′ above the Colorado River. Travel on day one will be slow and methodical as we manage the variables of rugged trail, steep descents, limited access to water and changing temperatures. Expect 8-10 hours of trail time (including breaks) from start to finish for the 7 to 9 mile day.

grand canyon charity trek

Day 2 – Undulating trail

On day two the trail typically undulates until we drop below the Tonto’s ledge, above the gorge floor, and into one of the many side canyons and washes that lead to the Colorado River. A quick descent will bring us to a creek bed floor which we will follow out to the Colorado River and camp.

grand canyon charity trek

Day 3 – Moderate uphill

After a leisurely evening, or morning by the river, we’ll retrace our steps then continue up and onto the Tonto trail. This day typically offers some of the most impressive views of the Grand Canyon. While hiking the Tonto you can see a thousand feet down into the inner gorge, thousands of feet up to the Canyon’s rim, and miles across the Canyon divide within the same breathtaking glance.

grand canyon charity trek

Day 4 – Intense uphill

An early, before-sun-up start will move us up and into the multi-layered, multi-colored walls of the Grand Canyon as we climb almost 4,000 feet to exit the trail and return to civilization. After celebrating as a team, we’ll return to Flagstaff, then home to brag.

Trek date confirmation

We apply for Grand Canyon permits through a lottery system on the 1st of the month, four months in advance of our planned trek date. Permits are typically issued within two weeks of submission. You’ll receive an email from us as soon as the dates for your trek are confirmed. Once confirmed, you can start making plans for transportation and pre-trek/post-trek accommodations.

Pre and post trek accommodations

Secure a lodging reservation in Flagstaff, AZ as soon as your trek dates are confirmed. You can request a TSX “corporate rate” at Little America Hotel ( flagstaff.littleamerica.com  / 800.865.1401) in Flagstaff. We will be hosting our pre-trek orientation at the hotel and will depart from the hotel on the morning of our hike (prices typically $125-$175 with discount). The nearby hotels on Lucky Lane are also a popular option and within walking distance (prices typically $75-$105).  If you plan on staying somewhere else, that is ok with us! Let us know where you end up and we’ll do our best to accommodate.

Transportation

If traveling by air, Flagstaff is the preferred airport. There is a free hotel shuttle to Little America Hotel from the Flagstaff airport. If flying into Phoenix, consider taking a shuttle or bus to Flagstaff, or renting a car. Reserve your shuttle spot in advance with Groome Transportation ( groometransportation.com  or 928.350.8466), or book your Greyhound Bus seat from Phoenix to Flagstaff in advance. You may also be able arrange customized shuttle service with Uber or Lyft.

Arrival time

When scheduling flights or planning your drive, please allow enough time to arrive no later than 7pm the evening before your trek begins so that you can attend the pre-trek orientation (typically scheduled between 6:00pm-7:00pm at the Little America Hotel, Flagstaff lobby).

Departure time

We plan on exiting the trail between 12pm and 2pm on the last day of the trek. However, the last day is always uphill, and there can be some variability based on individual fitness and preparedness. Please plan your return transportation accordingly. If flying out of Flagstaff on the same day, we suggest scheduling flights for departure no earlier than 4:50pm. Staying one additional night on the South Rim or in Flagstaff, and departing the following day is also popular option.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Don’t own a backpack, tent or sleeping bag? We provide all major gear for those who request it at no additional charge. We also take care of all group items like stoves, food, water filters, first aid and more. Your guides will do the cooking and dishes. Just show up with your personal items ready to hike!

Adam Gortowski – 05/09/2024

I am happy to say I survived the challenge. I arrived home from the Grand Canyon Challenge yesterday morning and still have the aches and pains I was expecting. I don’t remember ever sleeping in a tent in my life and had some excellent sleep all 3 nights out on the trail (I actually slept worse in the hotel room the night before the trip). I have never backpacked aside from the little bit of training I did to prepare for the trip. That sentence reminds me to say trek instead of trip, it can be a long fall to the bottom. I had never been to the Grand Canyon or even the desert before, our guide, Tolman put me and the others new to the experience at ease with his knowledge and cool head. I wasn’t sure what to expect concerning the food along the trail, Tolman prepared our meals nearly as tasty as any restaurant anywhere.

The Grand Canyon can be an extremely dangerous place, being with the TSX group made me feel more comfortable. I was thinking about my 23-year-old daughter visiting the Grand Canyon and I will insist that she uses the TSX tour group to keep her safe. It wasn’t easy by any means, but it is completely worth the money, time and effort for the amazing sights and experiences to be had. I am so grateful to have accomplished this and this trek was only possible for me thanks to the amazing experience, effort and planning of Tolman and the TSX team.

Completed this trip on the Hermit trail in March 2024. We had a member of our team who was delayed by one day due to flight issues, yet we still managed to execute our itinerary, with a bonus hike and trip to the Canyon while we waited for him to arrive. TSX went above and beyond to make accommodations to ensure everyone had a rewarding experience. What sets this trip apart is the intangible feeling of achievement upon completion. As a hiker from Texas, this trail tests limits, pushed outside the comfort zone. Everything they said is true. But the reward of hiking the Canyon is spectacular scenery. You will leave with sore muscles, stunning photos, and the kind of stories that no one at home or the office will believe. Pack your sense of adventure (and maybe an extra pair of socks), and get ready to explore the Grand Canyon. Excellent trip. Thanks to the TSX team for executing this!

It took me this long to let the experience sink in. Grand Canyon trip of a lifetime. My wife and I did the TSX Grand Canyon Escalante Route with some friends and other team members we met as part of the group. (Go Scorpions) Chris was our guide and made us feel super at ease from the time we met on video preps when he asked us if we wanted our trek to be “spicy” all the way to the final meal on the trip home! The TSX experience started right away with plenty of prep and communication in the months leading up to the trip. My wife and I were prepared for the “hiking” but not gravity of the experience. The Escalante route was challenging, beautiful and spiritual. We saw things we would have never seen on our own and learned things about ourselves we would have never learned on our own. The only bad thing is finding the time and choosing what our next TSX adventure will be!

When I first saw the Grand Canyon as a tourist, I was so amazed. But I’ve also wondered how it looks like below the rim. The Colorado river also piqued my interest. I did a trek with TSX before, so when I saw that they have a Grand Canyon trek, I knew I have to sign up. I know how well planned and organized TSX’s treks are, and this trek was no different. The hike down was a bit challenging and our guide, Dave, keeps saying that it would be easier going back up on last day. I was a bit skeptical but he was right! The trek was better than I expected, the views, the Colorado river, the meals, everything! One advantage of doing a backpacking trip with TSX is meeting new people who are up for adventure. I felt more inspired after getting to know the people on our team, they’re a group of friends/family, and I was just really amazed with their wit, humor and endurance. It was definitely an experience I would never forget and one that I can really say, was worth every step.

If there was an option for 10 stars, I would have given that! Proud to have been a part of the first All Women’s Grand Canyon Challenge! Our group was small, but mighty, and was led by Kate Hall, who deserves 10 stars herself! She was knowledgeable and made sure every detail was taken care of so that we could concentrate on the “Challenge” part of the trip 🙂 She did a wonderful job of creating a trek that allowed each of us to go at our own abilities (which turned out to be pretty darn close to everyone in the group…we KILLED it)! Our group bonded immediately and had a wonderful time on the “zero day” (which wasn’t really a true zero day but felt like it) down by the Colorado River!

Cheers to TSX Challenge for providing a trip where women can be women…we can do hard things!

Great guide great group. The hike is challenging but completely doable. Our group was amazing and bonded quickly. Our guide was experienced and shared a great deal of knowledge with the group.

Early in the process, the packing list was great and really encapsulates the equipment you will need. Because of the severe winter in the west this year (2023) updates were given regarding the conditions as our trip approached. This made packing for the conditions easy.

Any of the TSX Grand Canyon Challenges are going to be absolutely amazing. The routes that TSX will guide you along will leave you speechless as you soak in the magnificent beauty of Grand Canyon National Park. I have had the pleasure of being on two different routes with TSX in the last two years and as an Arizona native, the canyon never fails to impress me. The guides are knowledgeable, engaging, and helpful. You would think that with all the hiking in the canyon that you’re going to lose a few pounds along the way, but you can rest assured that the guides will prepare you meals fit for royalty. I can’t say enough good things about about the TSX Team and their amazing trips into one of the world’s most beautiful places.

Back from the 3-night/4-day Grand Canyon trek and all I can say is WOW! Everything from information about the trek, helpful articles and documents on how to train, pack, and expect, to the logistics of getting to the trailhead, the knowledge of our guide, the teaming and camaraderie, the equipment I borrowed, the delicious meals, and on and on… this was definitely an amazing and very positive experience. I would highly recommend a TSX trek. In fact, I’m signed up for a second one 3-months from now! Thank you TSX, Alex, and my teammates for this incredible experience

Machelle Brown – 04/07/2023

Once again TSX delivers an exceptional hiking trip! From the moment we stepped off the ledge into the canyon until the last step up and out, it was amazing. The Grand Canyon looks intimidating, but Alex and Aaron made it not only possible but fun and entertaining. The food they made every day was exceptional. We were given daily updates regarding the terrain and mileage. Alex knew right when to stop and let us rest, snack and take it all in. We hung out on the Colorado River, leaned into 60-70 mph wind gusts, walked in a river wash, survived the inferno (aka skirting the edge of a deep canyon), walked around Monument Tower, traversed the Tonto west trail into the Havasupai Gardens; then a steep snowy trek to the Bright Angel trailhead to our waiting van. The camaraderie with our fellow hikers and guides was the best. We dined on burgers and beers after and will have the memories forever. Plus…who doesn’t love bragging rights and a T-shirt to prove it!

We will be back for more adventures !

This was my first backpacking trip in many years. The itinerary was perfect, just enough to really challenge me but with perfectly placed rest stops and plenty of water. The campsite at Granite Rapids was outstanding – we had hours to explore around the Colorado River and enjoy the sounds of the rapids.

The guides were outstanding. Alex and Aaron were a sibling team, they fed off each other and kept the group going and in great spirits. The meals were hearty and delicious. The conversations everlasting and entertaining. I would HIGHLY recommend TSX Grand Canyon adventure and both Aaron and Alex as guides.

I am planning my next backpacking adventure as I am writing this. Thank you TSX!

Trek September 2022.. what an experience, one I will not forget. Chris and Dirk were amazing guides, from cooking us food to making sure we were all okay and got from point A to B. The Grand Canyon is so much different on this trip than just standing at the rim. We got to sleep on the beach of the Colorado River, who gets to do that. This trip ended up being a little harder than expected, but if you have the will power, you have an amazing time. Pack less, train more. Already planning on next TSX adventure!!

Anu Raghuraman – 10/24/2022

Chris and Dirk guided the our group of 9 all the way into the canyon and to the Colorado river. It was a fantastic trip in every aspect. The guides took very good care of us, ensuring that each of us had the water we needed, rested as often as required, and the motivation and encouragement we craved on the difficult terrain too. The meals were very well thought of and sumptuous and plentiful, from the huge breakfast spread before the hike (frozen gatorade!) to trail side hot lunches with the views, all the way to gourmet jambalaya at the camp site, every meal was a delight. The group dynamic was great with everyone coming together to support each other, and also reminding each other to stop and enjoy the trail rather than race to the finish line. The night on the cool beach by the Colorado river, sleeping under the open sky was one of the highlights of the trip.

The trail was a challenge, but with lots and lots of training, and the support of the guides, it was very much do-able and enjoyable at that. Highly recommend.

Thanks to Chris and Dirk for enabling me to tick off a bucket list item and develop more confidence in myself in the process.

Just completed the grand canyon challenge on the Tanner-Escalante-New hance route. Dara, our, guide took incredible care of us as we went through some incredibly varied terrain. Most people visiting the canyon will never see what you get to see on this trip. Want a pristine river beach?…you got that. Some slot canyons? You got that too. Not to mention the Papago Wall and Slide. Thanks TSX for a incredible experience!

It was an amazing experience to forget the outside world on TSX Grand Canyon Challenge. Everything about the journey from nature, the inspirational structures of Grand Canyon, night skies to food, conversations and companionships was amazing!!! Chris and Dirk were great guides in this journey and they took care of every part of the trip including graciously supporting me being the slowest in the pack. I am looking forward to my next TSX challenge but only after a lot more practice this time 🙂

Highly recommended.

My wife and I had always wanted to see the Grand Canyon and we were not disappointed. This trip is so much more than standing at the canyon rim. Hiking down into the valley floor the first day was challenging but spectacular. The challenge is real but manageable if you train for the journey. The second day hike was short and sweeter, and took us to the raging Colorado River. Spectacular rapids braved by rafters as we watched and enjoyed from the cool of the rivers edge. The food was delicious and plentiful. Chris and Dirk took care of all the details, though welcomed any willing hands to pitch in. It is a team effort after all. Pack less, train more, and I am sure you will enjoy this spectacular adventure as much as we did.

I was selected for the 2001 War Fighter Competition a Military Police a mental/physical competition for best Military Police Team in the United States Army. I have completed Marathons, Triathlons and many other physical challenges. The Grand Canyon Challenge was by far the toughest experience of my life. If you’re fit or think you are, mentally tough, and up to the challenge that could change your perspective on the human body abilities. I highly recommend this four day three night challenge. If the Grand Canyon is on your list, hike it with TSX Challenge – they took care of everything. We just chose a date and they got permits, food, and even supplied all gear for those that needed it. Our guides (Dave and Nate) were more than fit for this challenge and I knew we could rely on them if needed. The views were spectacular and spending nights near the creek and river were a perfect way to recover from they day of hiking. We had plenty of breaks and delicious lunches on the trail. Our entire group had a wonderful time and finished feeling accomplished and energized. We had lunch together and Dave gave us all trail names based on what he learned about us during the trip – such a fun way to bond and laugh together. I’m ready for our next adventure with TSX Challenge!

It was epic!!! The hiking was amazing and some sections were what I call “amazingly miserable”. The access to a creek and river at each campsite were key. Take the time to soak your feet and enjoy the water. The stars of the show were Dave and Nate. They went out of there way to care for us both physically and emotionally. We were spoiled. They cooked meals, cleaned our dishes, filtered fresh water all day, helped with any set up, offered first aid (blister) help and all with a good attitude. Their love of the outdoors and sharing it with others was obvious. Truly the BEST! I would definitely sign up for another trip when my friend tribe is ready!!!

The GC trip was a blast. It was so hard the first day. 8 miles downhill in the heat is no joke. The stream at the end of the trail was a G-dsend. It was so much fun splashing and laughing in the water and our feet were so thankful. Can we talk about the thai slaw wraps for lunch and the pesto pasta for dinner? I could have eaten 2 more bowls. It was so darn good.

Day 2 was a short hop, skip, and jump to the river. I won’t mention the slog through the creek bed on the gravel that felt like wet sand. Nah, I won’t mention it. There is nothing better than listening to the water right next to your tent. Sitting in our chairs at river’s edge was the perfect ending to a great day. Fajitas for dinner smelled and tasted so good.

Day 3 – I was actually not looking forward to 13 miles in the heat. Instead it was really a wonderful day. It wasn’t too hot. It started out with a light rain which made the hike a bit cooler. I could have done without the wind pushing me into the cactus but last I heard, TSX doesn’t control the weather. What they do control is the lunch. Peanut butter and Frito roll ups? Was I really that hungry or are they really that good? They are just that good. Indian Gardens was a TOTAL change from the dry desert landscape. Jumbalaya for dinner was amazing. The weather was cold and the dinner warmed us all up.

Day 4 – Up, up, and up. But it was ONLY 5 miles. What crazy person says that?

Honestly – this trip/challenge was incredible. Full of laughter and great memories. Dave and Nate were a perfect mix. Poor Nate had to spend 4 days in the caboose with me. He deserves a medal. I will be talking about this trip for many weeks to come.

Had an absolute blast in the Grand Canyon with Chris and Kyle! After fantasizing about hiking in the Grand Canyon for years, TSX Challenge helped me make it happen. What a great adventure, tough enough to make you work hard, but not so grueling you never want to do it again; and what a feeling of accomplishment when your head pops up above the rim. To truly experience the Grand Canyon, you must see, feel, hear, smell, and touch it with your own senses.

My first TSX experience was outstanding! The Grand Canyon no less. I’ve been doing guided back country trips for 15 years, and I can honestly say that our guide, Isaac, is by far the best I’ve ever had. His enthusiasm was infectious. His climbing skills were integral in getting us through the rough sections of the Boucher Trail. The other thing is that with all the hard work, I expected to lose some weight. But the TSX food was so good, I barely broke even. Not only will I recommend TSX, I’ve already signed on for another trip.

This was definitely a truly amazing experience with even more amazing views and trails. My 16 year old son and I had a wonderful time backpacking thru the Canyon. Our guide, Isaac, was very knowledgeable not only on the trail, but also the history, plants, and wildlife of the Grand Canyon. My son really enjoyed asking questions and listening to Isaac. This was definitely a trip we will remember forever. I’m glad I got to experience this with my son. We will definitely be using TSX on our next backpacking trip out west and will recommend TSX to all of our friends interested in doing a similar trip.

I went on the Grand Canyon Challenge recently with a group of gals with varying levels of experience backpacking, including several newbies. Everyone at TSX Challenge was professional and helpful right from the get-go. Their zoom calls and webinars answered all of our questions and gave us excellent advice for any backcountry trip. During the trip — which was challenging and wonderful and awe-inspiring — Chris and Kyle were endlessly patient, helpful, supportive, and fun. They prepared all the meals and cleaned all the dishes, collected/filtered water, and helped everyone with packs and tents and various maladies. All with good humor and professionalism. They were a pleasure to travel with and I highly recommend TSX trips for backpackers of any skill level.

Chris and his team were exceptional—accommodating food allergies and different levels of experience. The trip was first rate from beginning to end. I hiked the Grand Canyon with a group of women from Over50Outside who were all participating in #52hikechallenge. Several had never camped or backpacked before, a couple were veteran backpackers and there was everything in between. To a person, we all had an awesome time. Great views, challenging terrain and awesome food. Hiking with a backpack that was about 32 lbs did present its challenges-especially on the downhill. The heat also provided some challenges-bring plenty of electrolytes. You really couldn’t find a better organization for a backcountry challenge!

The Grand Canyon Escalante Route has been truly an amazing experience that I’ll remember for life! This is my first backpacking trip, and I’ve never carried a 30+lbs pack ever before. Looking back, I cannot believe I completed this challenge and can’t help but feeling so proud of myself. There so many things to remember for this trip – spectacular views, remote and rugged trails, awesome Team 4 Fab 5 members who supported me all the way through, and Chris who ensured my safety all along, cheered me up when I was pushing hard, and cooked awesome meals for all of us. I can’t wait to go out with TSX Challenge again for the next adventure!

TSX has consistently provided a hiking experience that surpassed my expectations on both an individual level and our group. You can’t help but to feel welcomed, supported, and mostly very motivated to embrace the adventure that is being provided. My complaints are few; the trails are too challenging, the views are too awe-inspiring, the Team is too good and mostly the experience is so perfect it will be hard for anything to surpass it. If you want to backpack in the wilderness and get off the grid to enjoy a unique hiking experience – TSX Challenge will not disappoint you!

The Grand Canyon Escalante Route hike was my second trek with TSX — and it was truly spectacular. Everything about this hike lives up to the hype. It’s rugged, remote, challenging, breathtaking, and inspiring all at once. Chris and Dave are skilled, knowledgable, and conscientious professionals, offering just the right encouragement at just the right moments. Boucher Trail to Hermit Trail Loop – May 2021 Another 5 star experience with TSX! It was my first time at the Grand Canyon and I don’t think I’d want to experience it any other way. The terrain is rugged but doable for most outdoor enthusiasts. I’d highly recommend this route for new backpackers even though it will still challenge seasoned veterans at times. I’m excited to get back on the trails with Chris and the TSX family.

AMAZING. EPIC. What a great time on the Escalante Route of the Grand Canyon with Chris and TSX. It was my first time backpacking and camping although I run quite a bit of trails. It was difficult for sure but the team was there every step of the way. Great food, company, but most of all support to get through the hard parts. As I reached the top I was overwhelmed with tears as to my (our) accomplishment. I highly recommend TSX and plan on doing another trip in the future!

At age 61, and never had backpacked before, my family and I did the Grand Canyon trek with Chris as our guide. I have to say this was not on my bucket list as I am not much of a hiker/backpacker. But my family wanted to do it, so I put my big girl panties on and went along. Thankfully, Chris , being the professional that he is knew to not ‘load’ my pack up with too much. Thank you, Chris. Although I have to say I felt a bit guilty about that, but got over it quickly. 😃 Day 1 was exciting and trekking through the Canyon is just like no other. You will never truly get the feel of the Canyon from just the top. After about 8 hours down we made it to the Colorado River. Enjoyed the night there on the sandy beach and had a great pasta meal, with wine, prepared by Chris. Every meal prepared was delicious! One would never guess you could have such great food while backpacking. During the 4 days of this trip I would say I had many feelings. First, anxiety the morning before the trek, secondly, excitement as we started our trek down, thirdly, tired and just wanted to get it over with, and fourth a feeling of accomplishment of something I would never thought I could do. This was a very rewarding experience as I never thought I was capable of such. Thank you Chris for all the encouragement and support, it truly helped me get through. Anyone looking for a guide to backpack the Grand Canyon, look no further TSX Challenge is the company you want to use, they will not disappoint!

First time I’ve been to the Grand Canyon and I’m glad it was with TSX. This is my third TSX trip and they never disappoint. Also, TSX is great at making everyone feel welcome and like a small family out there.

Also, brought my kids on this one (13 & 14). I (and my wife) had no doubt that not only would the three of us have fun with TSX, but also come back safe and with little to no blood lost (successful).

Wonderful time. Just debating what I do next.

The Grand Canyon was never at the top of my list but after an amazing first experience with TSX on the Trans Sierra Trek (2019), I decided that any trip with them would not disappoint. If you read through the reviews you will notice there are many repeat customers. You will be very well supported and well fed with any of these trips but the training falls on you. Be prepared and it will be way more rewarding. As far as the Grand Canyon-it’s more than a big hole! Just go, already!

Set out with Team One for the first trip of 2021 into the Grand Canyon. I am 58 and went with two of my kids, 23 and 19. None of us had ever been backpacking before or done more than a few-hour day hike. We all had a wonderful time. We started off in blowing snow, which changed to rain and then cleared to cloudless skys under a full moon on our first night. Pictures do not do the canyon justice. It is simply spectacular. We had a great group of trekkers and our guides Chris and Kristin were excellent. Very helpful and informative. Exhausting, but highly rewarding days. Great fun to camp at Granite Rapids, swim in the 47 degree Colorado river and watch rafters shoot the rapids. Extremely arduous last day – 10.5 mile, 9.5 hour hike from river to rim but worth every step. Fantastic bonding experience with my kids. Tasty food and interesting conversations with everyone along the trails. At the end I told myself that I would not be doing that again anytime soon however, after three days I am already looking for what’s next. Most highly recommended.

Grand Canyon Escalante – Spring 2021 There are many companies that can guide a trip to the backcountry, but none do it like TSX. Having hiked with firms all over the world, TSX are a cut above, way above, the rest. I just completed the Escalante route in the Grand Canyon, which was a trip to remember for a lifetime. Challenging, with outstanding scenery all under the expert TSX leadership of Dave and Chris. They carefully conducted pre-checks before we started, set the right pace, educated all along the way, pushed us when needed and cheered when we deserved it. The secret campsites were like something from a South Pacific postcard and the food, catered for individual tastes, was better than any city restaurant. TSX makes you feel like your part of a family, for whom they genuinely care. I can’t wait to join them again either in the Sierras or the Grand Canyon. Highly recommend them to anyone from novice to experienced, young to older.

Backpacking the Grand Canyon this October was beyond incredible. One of the coolest things I’ve ever done.

After training twice/week all summer I was physically prepared for the uphill days but totally unprepared for the downhill day (pro tip; find a very steep hill and practice hiking down using poles before you go).

I was absolutely blown away by the stunning vistas and complete lack of other people. It felt like we had the entire canyon to ourselves. The weather was perfect in every way, not a cloud in the sky the entire four days. The night we stayed on the Colorado river there was a full moon that words could not do justice.

Our guide was an extremely skilled backpacking guide and a really cool guy. He was our physical guide, emotional support, he cooked (really delicious food) and cleaned and supported us every step of the way. There is no way we could have organized this trip or found our way down the New Hance trail on our own. TSX made the planning easy, all we had to do was show up and keep trying.

Thank you Chris and TSX for an incredible, once in a lifetime adventure!

I knew this would be an experience of a lifetime but several things stick out to me as extraordinary. When I look back at our pictures from the washout approaching the Colorado river to the point of our departure at the top of the New Hance trail, I find it nearly impossible to believe that we could go as far as we did in a day. Looking back down at the river we camped at upon our exit was even more awe inspiring. The scale of the canyon is humbling our ability to traverse it was inspiring. TSX made everything SO easy for us. Watch the packing video and follow the instructions and you will be all set. We had everything we needed and nothing we didn’t. Also extraordinary was how well we ate on this trip. We started every morning with hot coffee, and I kid you not, they made me the best breakfast sandwich I think I have ever had (Buttered and toasted ciabatta roll stacked with munster cheese, 2 real eggs and 2 slices of Canadian bacon) Every meal had left overs and the only dehydrated food along the whole trip was powdered milk for the coffee. Just incredible. We had to dig deep on the way out but were treated to a number of surprises including old prospector equipment a copper mine and a visit from a big horn sheep. Despite my still aching quads, every step of this adventure was a pleasure and one I will never forget. Thank you TSX!

Well organized Grand Canyon trip. My first backpacking and backcountry experience, with lot of inhibitions. Amy, aka Sunshine, her trail name, was the guide and emerged a super hero. She glued the team together, and assumed the burden of the injured, pacified all complaints, and exhibited successful managerial skills. My trip was a success largely due to her active interventions. Reassured me that I will survive on another trip. Reinforced confidence in TSX choices and ability.

Where to begin!! I was completely challenged- mentally, emotionally, and most- physically. Again, this is not a trip to be taken lightly, and I would not want to be a beginner backpacker on this trip. The trails were tough and if you have a fear of heights, you’re screwed! Haha. I loved the Canyon. It is magnificent. The colorful ancient, rock formations, the river, the flowers, the frogs… I love that we were out there for much of the time and saw no one else. That sense of being one with nature. I loved our group! We had a great team approach and I felt supported by everyone. I loved dunking in the Colorado River after a long days hike. I loved Matt cooking for us, that I did not have to worry about that. I was inspired and awestruck by the incredible, magical beauty, and at the same time challenged by the arduous trails, rugged and awesome terrain, and the elements like strong winds and sun! Honestly, the depth of the canyon experience just keeps expanding. It is a part if me. The experience has stayed with me and magnificent images and feelings keep emerging. Something in me shifted. Hard to explain. Magical….

Thoroughly enjoyed my 4 day trip into the grand canyon with TSX challenge and our guide Matt. Jumping into the Colorado River at the bottom of the canyon and then camping in the shade of a big cottonwood tree near New Hance Creek were the highlights of the trip for me. It’s taken me a few days to organize both my photos and my thoughts. Ultimately, I’ve come to the realization that there are no words or images that can properly convey the magnitude of my experience hiking the Grand Canyon. I was overwhelmed by the majestic natural beauty of the Grand Canyon and even more blown away by the strength and camaraderie of my group of friends. This was an experience I will cherish for the rest of my life and I am grateful to all who helped make it happen.

Visiting the Grand Canyon was a bucket list item for me and this trip exceeded my expectations. The beauty of the Grand Canyon is simply beyond what words can describe. The Boucher – Hermit loop was rugged but took us to an isolated part of the canyon where we saw only one other hiker for the first three days. I wanted to experience the Grand Canyon away from crowds but probably would not have done so without a professional guide.

TSX Challenge handles all of the logistics and planning (including great food) so all you have to do is show up with a packed backpack and mental strength and determination. I am grateful for all Matt and Chris did to make this trip such an amazing experience and I am already looking forward to my next trip to the Grand Canyon and other trips with TSX Challenge.

Breathtaking, both literally and figuratively. A beautiful world wonder. There is no place on earth quite like it. Being in the canyon will blow you away when you see its scale and variety of scenery. Words will fall short to describe it. You must experience it yourself. Meeting the various challenges along the Boucher route will give you a better idea about what you are made of. You use mental toughness to overcome them. But the guides and your teammates will have your back. You will value the camaraderie you built up with them. Having the logistics being taken care of is a huge plus. The leadership Matt and Chris provided was not only professional but created full confidence that they would give the support for you to meet this Grand Canyon Challenge. Thank you Matt, Chris and all my teammates for your support, laughter and helping hand. It was a pleasure and privilege sharing this experience (my sixth with TSX) with you. I wanted to say Thank You again. Our four days in the Grand Canyon with TSX is an experience that has impacted my life in so many positive ways. It challenged me and allowed me to let go of a number of old, limiting beliefs that I have carried with me for a long time and for that I am truly grateful. To have been able to share the experience with my daughter only added to the fulfillment. We both so enjoyed your company over the past 4 days. It was a pleasure to get to know you. Thoroughly happy with my experience and am already filling out permit requests to head back to the Canyon in the fall (rim to rim)! Besides boot-camp, this was the most exhilarating and terrifying experience I have encountered. The views go without saying and physical component (for me) was appropriate for someone with confidence and a few months of training beforehand. Amy, our guide, was intensely knowledgeable and maintained an abundance of energy – even in the cold Colorado River! Though I was with a group, I was still able to maintain a safe measure of independence. (Though next time, I will bring my own snacks – from Trader Joe’s of course!) This challenge, or maybe another, is something I would do again with TSX.

Having experience guides definitely was a luxury and added a new dimension to my experience. I learned so much about the history of the Grand Canyon and new tips about backpacking (such as the amazing recipes). The trip far exceeded my expectations. If you are on the fence… JUST DO IT. Definitely a Five Star adventure. The terrain was unbelievably gorgeous and the hike was challenging, but doable. Our guide, Tolman, made the experience completely unforgettable by his patience, kindness, knowledge, and positive attitude. He was constantly reassuring us that we could do it and he was right. For a first time backpacker, this trip was so much more than I expected. My trip with TSX was my first backpacking trip- ever. I was pretty nervous, but TSX made me feel comfortable and welcome. They were very patient and walked me through the process (what to pack, how to pack, sizing of gear etc). They are very professional and provide ease in what could be an otherwise uneasy situation. The guide, Tolman, was super kind and knowledgeable, and his passion for his job definitely shines through and excites you as well. Amazing experience through the Grand Canyon. As many have noted above, it’s hard to explain the grandeur and scale of the Canyon without experiencing it first hand. Our guide, Tolman, was knowledgeable, kind, and encouraging. I took along my 14 year old son and together we made memories for a lifetime. The routes chosen and the campsites selected were excellent. Often times we had the trails to ourselves and it was not until the last evening that we saw more than a handful of people. Having the tents, backpacks, and sleeping bags provided was greatly appreciated by someone who does not do a considerable amount of camping (and would like to avoid the expense associated with purchasing these items). Perhaps the Trans Sierra Challenge next? Who knows. Thank you for providing some excellent memories.

An AMAZING backpacking experience! My wife and I absolutely LOVED the TSX Grand Canyon Challenge! The Grand Canyon was absolutely breathtaking! We just completed our trip April 9-13, and all the wildflowers and cacti were in full bloom. I have only done a couple minor overnight camping trips in my life, but nothing on this level. I really enjoy hiking, and the outdoors, but the planning and time to set up a trip like this would never happen on my own. TSX’s service in handling all the logistics, food and gear was a huge service in creating a truly memorable experience! It was indeed challenging, but Chris and Robert made the hike manageable, fun and I finished feeling more knowledgeable about hiking, backpacking and the Grand Canyon than I ever would on my own. I think I ate better on this trip than I do in my regular day-to-day, as well.

All in all, I would highly recommend this trip to pretty much everyone I know. Being a shorter trip than the original TSX Challenge, it fit my schedule as an educator perfectly over my Spring Break! Hats off to Chris and the whole TSX team for putting on a top notch guided backpacking experience!

This was my second trip with TSX and it did not disappoint! I brought my best friend along for the ride as well as a friend I made while backpacking the Sierras with TSX previously. We had an amazing time both strengthening our bond and getting to make friends with the others on our trip. I find these backpacking trips to be the best place to bond with people quickly while enjoying an incredible experience together! TSX’s routes are thoughtful, well-planned, and always stunning. My friend and I do day-hikes all over southern california (from Mt Baldy to Temescal and all points between), but as a newbie to backpacking & camping, I would never have felt comfortable or safe attempting the Grand Canyon on our own. Chris and Tolman are total pro’s in every sense, from their knowledge of the terrain to working with people of all abilities and making a cohesive, fun group atmosphere for everyone. I came away from this experience not only with a great sense of pride in a huge accomplishment, but also with a group of new friends that I can’t wait to see again – we laughed ’til our sides hurt, and every day ends with a high five, good food, and something warm to drink. All I can say is WOW! This was my 1st backpacking trip at age 51 and will continue to do more. This was truly an amazing experience for me both physically and mentally. The TSX Challenge is by far the best way to be (much needed) 100% unplugged from work and social media. We were completely worry free due to our guide “Chris” who made sure we had all the tools to be successful. Everyday was a new challenge with new incredible views that can’t be seen anywhere but “IN” the beautiful Grand Canyon. I cannot explain the flood of emotions I felt when we reached our daily destinations but the tears were not of pain or disappointment. I HIGHLY recommend TSX Challenge. Great Guide, Great Food. Amazing in every way!! You will NOT be disappointed!! Thank you a 1000X Chris for the experience of a lifetime! I have to give a shout out to KEEN Women’s Koven Waterproof Mid Hiking Boots and Ecosox Bamboo Socks (hiking and outdoor). My 15 year old son and I went on the Grand Canyon trip and really enjoyed it. It was our first time backpacking and we were certainly anxious about the challenge. The TSX team did a great job contacting us weeks before our departure to make sure we were purchasing the right gear and supplies. We opted to use their packs, sleeping pads, sleeping bags and tent. All of the gear was high quality and clean. It allowed us to travel light and focus on our specific gear. Our very friendly guides met with the hikers the evening before and spent time with us to make last minute adjustments to our gear based on the weather. I would highly recommend TSX to beginner – intermediate backpackers that want to try the sport before investing in gear and need some reassurance before taking on such a challenge as the Canyon. Advanced backpackers might also want someone to help them coordinate permits, food, and transportation in and out of the canyon – especially those that haven’t been to the Canyon to find those secret camp sites. Ultimately my son and I made it and have amazing memories and some quality, non-electronics based, time together.

Just Do It! This backpacking trip will inspire you!! Only when you hike down the trails, sleep under the stars, see the deer and mtn goats, swim in the Colorado river, experience the majestic cathedral views from below the rim, will you truly understand the Canyon’s grandeur. Seriously, you’ll have an experience that few people will ever know.

This is my 2nd hike with TSX Challenge. Their guides will take excellent care of all the group details, provide good food and you’ll make new lifelong friends.

As Phil said, get yourself in shape so you’ll have the most enjoyment.

After this … then do the TSX Trans Sierra challenge! Just once in your lifetime, you have to stand on top of Mt. Whitney!

The Grand Canyon Extreme Challenge was a marvelous experience. Only when you really are going down into the canyon will you realize its majesty, scale, flora, fauna and incredible views. You will get to know your hiking companions and share this fantastic adventure. When you get to the Colorado river and plunge into it you will feel the satisfaction of reaching one of your bucket list goals rush through your body. There really are no words to adequately describe the emotions you will experience on this trip. The guides are very knowledgeable and are safety conscious. They will take care of you without any doubts. My advice is to be in good shape. This is not a “Walk in the park”. Jan Gazenbeek, 73

Philip Bradley – 05/03/2016

The scale of the Grand Canyon is difficult to appreciate without hiking to the bottom, swim in the Colorado and hike back to the top. I am not an expert hiker and found the TSX group to offer exactly what I was looking for. Chris and team handled all the difficult arrangements, food, cooking and logistics leaving the hiking to me all while ensuring I was safe; both in the equipment needs, equipment use and my physical well being. This is a challenging hike you shouldn’t take lightly. Exercise, get out and hike and be fit enough to really enjoy the adventure. I loved every minute of it.

John Rich – 05/03/2016

Great trip to the Grand Canyon last week. The team at TSXChallenge are awesome. They were very helpful in planning and preparation. It was so nice to not worry about navigation or food. Their instructional video was easy to follow to pack. I brought my own gear, TSX provided excellent gear to some of our team members. The guides were approachable, encouraging, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful. It was evident to me that the TSX guides have a passion for the work they do vs seeing it as a job. I highly recommend TSXChallenge. You will unplug from your normal life, re focus on important priorities, make new friends and create memories you will never forget. I intend to go on another trip and bring my sons.

In. Cred. Ible. This trek was everything I could have hoped for and more. If you’re looking for a luxe experience this isn’t it, but if you’re looking for a real backpacking expedition, look no further; you’ve found it! Millions visit the Grand Canyon, but only a tiny percentage of those folks ever venture more than a mile or so in. This trip earns you membership to a very exclusive club: those few who get to see the canyon up close and personal; from the bottom up. With any luck, you may even get to sleep out under the stars on the banks of the Colorado River! We had no equipment of our own; TSX provided all we needed and it was great stuff. I think the best things I can say about this trip are that, rather than having a professional guide, it felt like we were hiking with a really great friend who just happened to have mad backpacking skills. The second thing is that my partner, who had previously been on no more than an 8 mile day hike, now wants to do the Mount Whitney trek! Yes. It was that good! For that last thing alone I can’t thank you enough Chris.

Harry Allen – 12/04/2015

TSX trips are truly a profound experience! I had two reactions to going on the Grand Canyon Challenge. The first can be described by that scene from Office Space where the main character has a transformative experience and turns into a badass. All his friends are shocked by his new attitude and suddenly he’s wanted by everyone at work simply because of this attitude. Finishing the Grand Canyon challenge kind of feels a little bit like that.

You might also look at it as an experience in wonder as I have. Accomplishing a major feat like a backpacker make you feel like a badass – you return with a whole new perspective. Experiencing natural wonders, and having to work to do it, far exceeds the experience of anything you could buy, drink, smoke or otherwise consume in urban life. Wildness is out there, and ready to take on with a TSX trip.

What an AMAZING trip and inspirational experience. This was first time backpacking and surely not the last. I’d highly recommend this trip to anyone interested.

Do it! Unforgettable group and personal experience. It was my first time backpacking and now looking to get out there again…soon. You need to get in the Canyon to truly understand and appreciate it.

Dan – 11/10/2015

This was a truly amazing experience. Chris is was very familiar with the landscape, had everything covered, and secured the most picturesque campsites. I had minimal backpacking experience prior to my trip, and I left feeling like a pro! I would recommend this trip to anyone; it was sufficiently challenging, and thoroughly enjoyable.

Like the site says, this company provides a service basically comprised of trail access, trail knowledge, preparation and guiding. Personally, I don’t know that I could have provided all of that for myself at all, and certainly not at a price or inconvenience to myself which would be better. I greatly enjoyed my guide, Alex. Of course, the Grand Canyon is just incredible. I am really, really happy I took this trip.

John D – 04/24/2015

An amazing adventure! Exploring the Grand Canyon has always been on my wish list, and this trek was perfectly planned from start to finish. I can’t think of a better way to spend 4 days in one of the crown jewels of our national park system. The guides were friendly and personable, and I enjoyed learning new camping techniques I can bring with me on future wilderness trips.

Elizabeth – 04/09/2015

I participated in this trek with my thirteen year old granddaughter and it was the trip of a lifetime for the two of us. She had the best time and I was so proud watching her face the challenges and overcome obstacles this trail presents. I felt like I watched her grow up in just a few days. No doubt, this is a tough and sometimes scary trek, and for the first few miles, and off and on during the first day, I really wondered if we could do it—-but the guides were very encouraging and helpful, and the otherworldly beauty of the Grand Canyon kept us going. We’ll be talking about it for a long, long time.

Greg L – 04/09/2015

What an amazing trip. 35 miles over 4 days and 3 nights, just the right amount. The views were incredible. Every step you take, there is a different perspective of the canyon. Our guide was great and the food was excellent! I will be enjoying the memories from this trip for the rest of my life.

I participated on the March 15-18 trek in the Grand Canyon and the experience was better than expected. Liked the attention to detail with planning and logistics, and really enjoyed the extra time we had to spend at the Colorado river. Thank you for the great experience! Proudly wearing my Grand Canyon Xtreme Challenge shirt to the gym : )

B Fairley – 03/22/2015

The Grand Canyon challenge exceeded my expectations. If you want to get out to a location seen by very few people and really challenge yourself physically and mentally, you would love this adventure. The guides are very organized and experienced. Our guide was so encouraging and also prepared us excellent meals. The trek trail has such amazing views that they are hard to describe in words. The trek covers a wide array of gorgeous landscapes. I highly recommend TSXChallenge’s guided trips.

Robert – 03/21/2015

Awesome trip and experience. Highly recommend to anyone who want to experience the ‘real’ Grand Canyon. Its hard work and relaxing at the same time.

DATES & PRICES

How to join.

T here are 2 ‘payment options’ available when you sign up. For both options, you pay the deposit when registering for the challenge. you can also choose to book a package with flights (Flights included) or without (Land Only).

The scheduled trip dates are set out below along with the ‘Self Funding Cost’ – and click on ‘Full Details’ for the fundraising options. Prices are based on a twin share in respect of challenge accommodation, and scroll down to see info on single supplements, joining with a friend / partner, options for extending your stay, high season pricing, and airline and airport taxes.

Just like a standard holiday! You pay the initial registration deposit online, and then the final balance of the trip cost (+ any fuel surcharge imposed by the airline if booking a Flights Included package) – which is invoiced 12 weeks prior to departure.

MORE INFO >

Do it for a charity of your choice! Choose how much of the trip cost you want to cover yourself & fundraise at least twice the amount of the remaining balance. Your chosen charity pays us the final balance from this fundraising, with the rest being kept as a donation. At least 80% of your fundraising target needs to be with the charity 12 weeks prior to departure (and all balances by 4 weeks after return). Any airline imposed fuel surcharge will be invoiced to you  if booking a Flights Included package  – 12 weeks prior.

Dates & Prices

If you are ready to book – please complete our online form, pay your deposit, and then manage your registration & place on the challenge via your account. You will receive a confirmation email, which also has details of what to expect next.

2024 Departures

Departs 11 oct 2024 returns 19 oct 2024, flights inc. £3,095 land only £2,495, how it works.

Our packages are generally ‘all inclusive’ – with accommodation, meals, transport, and local ground operator services included – and of course flights if you choose that option. Single supplements are available – and there’s the option to extend your stay – either by simply changing the return date of your flight and booking your own extension activities – or in some instances by opting for one of pre- arranged extension packages. Places on many of our trips are limited so we recommend booking soon to avoid disappointment!

Our ‘with flights’ option is based on an economy class group booking departing from London (you can request a quote for an ‘upgrade’). The ‘land only’ option means that you book your own flights, and arrange to join the group at the 1st night’s hotel / or airport meet point.

If you’re traveling across the globe – extending your trip may be the perfect opportunity to explore, relax, or do more activities! If you choose the ‘with flights’ option you can request a return flight date change – and either arrange your own extension programme & reservations – or  book one of our pre-arranged packages if available.

If your traveling with someone else – or as a small group – do let us know so we can ensure that the accommodation and flight arrangements worked out properly from the outset.

All our quoted prices are based on a ‘twin share basis’ (ie with a friend / partner – or on a same sex allocated basis if travelling alone). You can request a ‘single supplement’ to cover hotel rooms / tent / lodge accommodation.

Oil prices are volatile, and often airlines impose ‘fuel surcharges’. Unfortunately we have to pass these surcharges on to our customers – as they’re ‘unknown’ at the time of booking (which may be up to 18 months in advance of the trip) – and are invoiced 12 weeks prior to departure (once confirmed by the airline) – is subject to a ‘cap’ – which is the maximum that you would ever need to pay (we cover the cost above that cap). Airport & air travel taxes are also potentially subject to change in times of post Covid recovery & CO2 emission control – and this is covered via our Terms & Conditions.

As with any adventure holiday, prices may be higher at certain times – generally reflecting the higher flight prices during those peak periods.

At Grand Canyon you can stand on the edge and look down, but at Zion Canyon you will look up from the bottom to view the beautiful sandstones and red canyon slots. The views are unimaginable!

We end this incredible challenge in Las Vegas, the city that never sleeps!

Trek The Grand Canyon

grand canyon charity trek

Take a trekking trip to Grand Canyon to see some of the most amazing landscapes on the planet as well as the opportunity for some thrilling white water rafting on the turbulent waters of the Colorado or the lights and glamour of Las Vegas.

The Grand Canyon is simply breathtaking in its beauty and in its sheer size, it’s a massive 6,000 feet (1,828 metres) deep at its deepest point and 15 miles (24km) at its widest. In its entirety, the Grand Canyon stretches a colossal 277 miles (445.7 km).

Trekking the Grand Canyon

This adventure challenge involves trekking through the stunning landscape of the Grand Canyon and on your trek you’ll learn all about the geological history of the canyon, which the river has carved through over millions of years.

You’ll visit amazing sites including Sedona, with its fascinating red rock formations, Oak Creek, Mogollon Rim and the stunning turquoise waters of Havasu Creek and the Havasu waterfalls.

Day-to-day Grand Canyon trek itinerary

In order to maximise your enjoyment of your trip to Arizona and trekking the Grand Canyon we recommend a trip duration of at least ten days. There are many tour guide operators or charities you could choose to travel with and each will offer a different itinerary. The itinerary below is an example only and may vary.

Day 1 – Fly to Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport

Check into your hotel after your journey and relax for the evening before your adventure begins tomorrow.

Day 2 – Phoenix to Kaibab

In the morning you will be collected from your hotel and transported north through the Sonoran Desert and into the stunning red-rock canyons of north central Arizona. The two-hour drive finishes at Sedona where you disembark to explore the amazing red-rock formations of Oak Creek Canyon, an area that is of great spiritual importance to Native Americans.

A 4.9 mile (8km) trek brings you to the great monolith of Cathedral Rock, where you will enjoy lunch by the creek before the transport take you on a fascinating two-hour tour of the canyon. The drive takes you from the canyon floor to its rim at 7,001 feet (2,134 metres) where you continue to your hotel accommodation at Kaibab.

Day 3 – Kaibab to the Grand Canyon

After breakfast you will be driven to the Grand Canyon National Park where you leave your vehicles to descend into the vast depths of the Canyon. It is a three-mile trek to reach the Canyon bottom from the rim above to stand in awe at the sheer magnificence of the Canyon above you. It really is amazing to think that the sheer rock walls all around you have been formed simply by the erosion of river water.

After some lunch it’s time for the three-mile trek back to the Canyon rim. This is a steep uphill ascent and can be very hot in the Arizona sun so take plenty of water and sun-block!

Day 4 – Kaibab to Hualapai

A one-hour, early morning vehicle ride takes you from your hotel to an Hualapai Hilltop at 5,400 feet (1,646 metres). From the hilltop your trek descends into a labyrinth of red sandstone formations before stopping for a quick lunch, then continuing on to trek past the awesome 80 feet (24 metres) Navajo and 100 feet (30 metres) Havasu waterfalls before setting up camp for the evening in a stunning setting by the falls.

Day 5 – Hualapai to Beaver Falls

After an early breakfast your trek continues deeper into the Canyon, down to the wonderful Mooney Falls. From Mooney Falls a steep, challenging (and wet!) descent brings you to Beaver Falls. This is a really fun-packed descent with opportunities for swimming and jumping off small waterfalls. You will then camp overnight near to the falls.

Day 6 – Beaver Falls to Carbonate Canyon

Day six is a relatively easy days trekking with some leisurely walking in Carbonate Canyon and a climb up to Esplanade for an amazing view of the falls and the north rim of the Grand Canyon.

Day 7 – Carbonate Canyon to Las Vegas

Day seven is spent ascending back out of the Canyon. Once you reach the top the feeling of achievement will be amazing and this is an experience you will never forget. You as well as everyone else will have huge smiles on your faces, as you sit around the campsite fire looking back over a truely amazing trek.

Day 8 – White water rafting

After a week of tough trekking it’s time to relax and have some fun. On day eight you race down the white water rapids of the Colorado River and enjoy a day of adrenalin-packed fun.

Day 9 – Carbonate Canyon to Las Vegas

On day nine you are collected from your campsite at the Grand Canyon and transported to a hotel in Las Vegas. Here you can relax your weary body in a hot jacuzzi before heading into town to enjoy the glitter and glamour of this 24-hour city and celebrate your fantastic trekking experience in style!

Day 10 – Fly home

How to get to the Grand Canyon

An adventurous and budget way to trek the Grand Canyon is to simply book a flight to Phoenix and then find some guides to take you. This would be a very easy way to organize your adventure and may save you some of the costs associated with using a tour operator.

If you have a busy work or social life with limited time, then we recommend booking your expedition via a reputable Grand Canyon trekking tour operator.

Using a reputable tour operator brings many benefits:

  • Well-planned itineraries with good on-route accommodation, food and sightseeing opportunities.
  • Well trained and knowledgeable guides.
  • An office including staff who you can ask questions due to their first hand knowledge of the walk.

When booking your walk always make sure you know what is and what is NOT included in the price for example visa fees, airport taxes and travel insurance.

Who can trek the Grand Canyon?

The walk can be challenging and has an overall grading of reasonably strenuous activity but anyone who is reasonably fit and is looking for a challenge can trek the Grand Canyon!

Regardless of your level of fitness, it is always good advice to have a full medical check-up before deciding whether or not to tackle the Grand Canyon. Also when you are planning your trip, ensure you have had at least one rest day after flying to Phoenix to recover from any jet lag or travel fatigue.

Medical information

Always consult your doctor for a list of all the medical requirements for a trip to the U.S. and trekking the Grand Canyon. There are currently no vaccinations required or any risk of Malaria when traveling to the U.S, although it is advised that your primary course and boosters are up to date before you travel to the States.

Charity treks

Why not trek the Grand Canyon for a charity? Get sponsored for your trip and raise loads of cash for a worthy cause. Not only will you have trekked through the most amazing landscape in the world but you'll have helped other people too... the feeling of achievement will be fantastic!

As well as raising money for a worthwhile cause, if you do decide to go with a charity the good news is they take all the hassle out of organising the trip. You don’t need to worry about booking your flights or accommodation and all the other stuff – all you need to worry about is getting in shape.

Feeling inspired? Why not view our list of Partner Charities and pick a great cause to support.

Your trip will be led by experienced Discover Adventure leaders. Our leaders are selected for their experience in harsh wilderness environments, knowledge of travel in remote areas, friendliness and approachability, sense of humour and ability to safely and effectively deal with any situation that arises. They are also trained in expedition first aid. You are in very safe hands with a Discover Adventure leader. Usually leaders are based in the UK or other English-speaking countries and lead for us regularly throughout the year in many different countries. In some instances, trips are led by in-country guides with a wealth of knowledge about the region; they have been trained by us to provide the level of support expected on a Discover Adventure trip.

An expedition doctor or medic accompanies the group (dependent on group size.) Their role is to look after the well-being of the whole group and deal with any medical incidents. They help the crew to ensure the trip runs smoothly, and encourage you when things get tough. The total number of crew looking after you will depend on the final size of your group.

Our local support crew is made up of local guides, assisted by drivers, porters, cooks and other support staff, depending on the type of trip. Local guides know the area well, and are a great source of knowledge about local lifestyles. The Discover Adventure crew work closely with the local crew to ensure your trip runs smoothly and safely. In some destinations we work together as a team with local guides to help set up or break camp, or prepare meals. Your leader will arrange a collection of tips for the local support crew at the end of your trek, and you will be provided with a guideline amount in advance. Tipping is not obligatory, but once you see how hard they work on your behalf you will be happy to donate something!

Your safety, and that of the rest of the group, is our highest priority. Our trips are designed and planned with safety in mind. Your crew will be equipped with communication devices (eg phones, radios and/or emergency satellite phones), medical kit and other safety apparatus appropriate to the destination. Our leaders always have access to our 24-hour emergency UK back-up. Group flights usually leave from London Heathrow or Gatwick on scheduled airlines and are booked through Discover Adventure Ltd under ATOL licence 5636. By travelling with Discover Adventure you are protected by the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA).

Your journey may involve a transit en route; details of route and flight times will be confirmed several months before departure.  We do not always use the same airline for each destination; if you wish to know the probable carrier and flight times, please call for details. You will usually receive confirmed flight details several months before departure. Our itineraries are always based on current flight schedules and are therefore subject to change by the airline. If you prefer to book your own flights please ask us for a land-only cost.

We camp in roomy two-man tents in  wonderful campgrounds, often in state parks, with good facilities. Other nights are in hotels of a 2-3* standard or equivalent.

Our trips are sold on a shared accommodation basis, usually twin-share. Occasionally we may use hostel-style accommodation. You can tell us if you are travelling with someone else on the trip when you book or within your passenger portal, and we will do all we can to accommodate this request. It is important that both people complete the room share request on their bookings. For customers booking and travelling together, including same-sex couples, a double bed can be requested if available. If you're not familiar with anyone in the group, rest assured, we always pair you with someone of the same gender (as per the information you provided when booking, or passport markers), and a similar age where possible. We're actively working to improve our system's gender restrictions to be more inclusive, and we've recently made significant strides in this area. If you identify differently from the gender marker on your passport and would like to discuss this before booking, please feel free to reach out to us.

The food provided is plentiful, often local in style and freshly-cooked, and will give you plenty of energy. Sometimes we enjoy a buffet-style lunch-stop, other times we might have packed lunches. On some trips we stop at small local restaurants. Dinners are generally eaten at our accommodation each evening. In some regions there may be less variety than you are used to, and in others fresh meat or produce can be harder to come by. Any meals not included are listed in the itinerary and are generally on travel / free days, giving you the opportunity to explore and try other culinary experiences! There is always something to suit different budgets.

Being vegetarian or having other dietary requirements is not usually a problem provided you let us know well in advance. Please do not expect as much variety as you would have access to at home – we may be in very rural or remote areas, or among people of a different culture who may not understand your requirements, however willing they are to help. If you know there are plenty of foods you cannot eat we strongly recommend you bring extra snacks from home so you can top up your energy supply. Please feel free to ask us for advice.

Your luggage, food, water and equipment is transported for you from one night-stop to the next. If there is easy road access this is done by vehicle; if not porters, mules or even camels might carry your bags, depending on the terrain.

Space is limited and hard-sided luggage is not suitable, so it is essential that your kit is packed in a soft bag, rucksack or expedition kitbag. Ask us about our specially-designed low-cost kitbags if you don’t have one already. You should also bring a small daypack to carry for items needed during the day as you will not have access to your main luggage until the evening.

Preparing for the Challenge

This is designed to be a challenge, and it is vital that you train sufficiently for it. We will supply you with a thorough training guide once you have registered. We expect all participants to train hard in advance, but we respect everyone’s limits and do not expect everyone to maintain the same pace. Inadequate training is likely to have an impact not just on your chances of completing the challenge, but enjoying it too - and we want you to have the time of your life!

Our challenges attract people of all levels of experience, fitness and ability as well as all ages and backgrounds. We design our challenges so that everyone can go at their own pace: this is not a race. If you have concerns about your fitness or if you have reduced mobility please do contact us for a confidential chat about whether this challenge is appropriate for you.

For logistical and safety reasons we sometimes need to re-group, so the front-runners may find themselves waiting for the slower ones. Please relax, and remember that this is a team effort that enables people to achieve their personal goals and earn sponsorship.

Entry requirements vary depending on your destination and nationality. It is your responsibility to ensure your passport is valid, and any visas are obtained in good time. Check the FCO’s advice on entry requirements for your destination to be sure. Please ensure you allow plenty of time to apply for your visa; we will provide you will all necessary information 6 weeks prior to depature to assist with your application.

Your routine UK schedule of vaccinations should be up-to-date (especially tetanus). We recommend you check Fit For Travel for further details. You should always check with a GP or travel clinic for up-to-date travel health advice as it does change.

We plan our trips around the optimal weather conditions, but could still be exposed to bad weather at any time. It is vital you are prepared for all conditions. We provide you with a detailed packing kit-list on registration, with plenty of information, and we are always available if you need advice.

Make A Trip To Bearizona

Make the fascinating drive through the 160-acre Bearizona Wildlife Park near Williams, just off Route 66 and south of the Grand Canyon. The family-friendly attraction allows visitors to drive a three-mile loop through the park to witness free-roaming wildlife areas full of bears, wolves, bison, birds, and more.

Later, travelers can get out of the car to stretch their legs and walk through Fort Bearizona to see smaller animals like bobcats and river otters.

Apart from its charming downtown, there are tons of other things to do in Flagstaff , from art galleries showcasing local culture to music festivals, diverse dining, and lively nightlife.

Nestled in the Coconino National Forest, Flagstaff is also just a stone's throw away from holistic escapades in Sedona, historic attractions along Route 66, and plenty of outdoor activities.

The best way to get around Flagstaff is to arrive by car and later leave it parked at the hotel or in a lot to more easily enjoy the downtown by foot or bike.

One of the best parts of Route 66 is the roadside attractions along the way, a reminder that life is more about the journey than the destination. Enjoy a pit stop or lunch here, then relish the charm of bright murals, signs, and storefronts.

Seligman is just two hours south of the South Rim, making it a great place to visit near the Grand Canyon.

The winding highway flirts between the Arizona and Utah border, passing through the iconic Monument Valley: a fascinating Martian landscape full of buttes reaching 1,000 feet high, photo opportunities, and gorgeous sunsets.

The entire U.S. Route 163 drive takes anywhere from three hours, depending on the amount of time spent taking photos, and traverses about 65 miles through the Navajo Nation, the largest Native American reservation in the nation.

Best Time To Go To The Grand Canyon Region

Arizona, southern Utah, and Nevada are infamous for their scorching hot summers, dry, desert-like climates, and their consequential fascinating landscapes. Due to varying landscapes, the climate across this region also varies greatly.

With very little precipitation and over 300 days of sun a year, the good news is that roadtrippers can visit the Grand Canyon region really any time of the year, although each season may cater to distinct interests and vacation types.

  • Best Time To Visit: Fall or Winter
  • Temperatures: Lows in the 30s or 40s, highs in the 50s or 60s

Not only are there endless fall activities to enjoy in the Grand Canyon , but the surrounding region also shines from October to December. Autumn in Arizona offers the best weather for hiking and other activities like corn mazes, wine tastings, and food festivals.

Book hotels, restaurant reservations, and flights well in advance if traveling to the Grand Canyon region in the fall, as it's the busiest and most expensive time of year.

While Arizona winters will be warmer for northerners, the Grand Canyon region still gets light snow and chilly nights from December to February. The frosty peaks make skiing a popular wintertime activity, along with hot air ballooning.

Accommodation prices are moderate in the winter and even at their lowest in certain regions of Arizona. However, rates can still go up during the weekends when skiers flock to the slopes.

Spring is another great season for outdoor activities in the Grand Canyon region, from hiking and biking to marveling at desert wildflower blooms. Temperatures can already graze the 80s from March to May, so travelers should pack lots of water and sunscreen to beat the midday heat.

Luckily, with all the rivers and reservoirs throughout Arizona, there's always a cove or beach nearby to cool off at.

June is often roadtrippers last chance to explore Route 66 before the summer heat sets in. Lots of areas in the Grand Canyon region soar above 100° in the summer, so a trip during July or August should be reserved for relaxation at spa resorts, moonlit night hikes, or museums and art galleries.

While certain cities like Phoenix get unbearably hot in the summer, others like Sedona or Flagstaff offer more reasonable warm temperatures.

Best Ways To Get Around The Grand Canyon Region

By far the best way to explore the area around the Grand Canyon is by driving, whether it's the car, truck, RV, or camper. There's just so much to see, from state parks and wildlife refuges to lakes and city life, and none of these sites are exactly close, so the best and most thorough itineraries include traveling by car.

Road tripping is particularly popular in the Grand Canyon region, especially considering some of the Southwest's most famous scenic drives are in the area, including Route 66 and Route 163.

On Foot Or By Bike

While vacationers may have to hop between sites by driving, there are a lot of opportunities to get out and stretch their legs in the Grand Canyon region. Visitors can walk around quaint downtowns, explore city life in Flagstaff, trek some of the most beautiful hikes in the United States , or go biking around Lake Powell or Mead.

Public Transportation

Apart from the Grand Canyon Railway from Williams to Grand Canyon Village and free shuttle services within the Grand Canyon National Park, public transportation in the region is generally expensive, time-consuming, and scarce. Cities like Flagstaff, however, offer buses to traverse the downtown and surroundings.

  • One-way Tickets: from $1.25 per adult
  • Schedule: varies by line, check route timetables before visiting

Tips To Know When Visiting The Grand Canyon Region

America the beautiful pass.

Travelers looking for things to do on the way to the Grand Canyon should consider purchasing an annual America the Beautiful Pass . The pass includes day-use entrances to over 2,000 national parks and recreation sites, many of which are in Arizona, Utah, and Nevada.

The pass is valid for one year and is good for the pass owner plus all other passengers in the vehicle or for up to three other adults if the site charges per person.

  • Pass Prices: from $80 per year
  • Note: several free and discounted rates are available

Is The Grand Canyon Region Safe?

As far as safety goes exploring other attractions near the Grand Canyon, while vacationers should always be aware of their surroundings, the locals are generally friendly and helpful, in addition to being accustomed to tourists.

The biggest safety concern could be any vehicle issues, so roadtrippers should always check their tires and engines before and during their vacations. Never drive for too many hours uninterrupted, and watch out for wildlife crossing the highways, especially late at night.

How To Spend The Perfect Day In The Grand Canyon Region

Although the perfect day exploring things to do near the Grand Canyon may not exist, a long weekend or four days may be the best amount of time to soak up all there is to enjoy in the area.

The best itineraries on the way to the Grand Canyon include road-tripping along Historic Route 66 and making stops in Peach Springs for some outdoor adventures and later in Seligman or Williams to grab lunch at a classic American diner, take a selfie with quirky roadside attractions, and stroll the main streets.

From Williams, travelers can spend a day taking the Grand Canyon Railway to the South Rim or veer south to see some wildlife up close at Bearizona. Follow Route 66 to Flagstaff to wrap up the trip with a hopping arts and culture scene and nightlife.

Other vacationers looking for what else to do near the Grand Canyon may prefer to center their trips further north and check off some must-try bucket list experiences in the United States , including Coral Pink dunes, Lake Powell, and the stunning Monument Valley.

Katy’s Grand Canyon charity trek

13/01/16 | FUNDRAISING

grand canyon charity trek

CHECT ambassador Katy Bishop braved scorching temperatures and steep ravines to raise money for families affected by retinoblastoma . She reveals what it was like taking on one of the natural wonders of the world…

“I always wanted to see the Grand Canyon but I never thought I would. And not for a second did I think that I would go because of my son’s cancer. But that is what happened.

Owen was diagnosed in 2010, aged 10 months, and is now a thriving six-year-old, full of fun and joy, and he makes me proud every single day.

As most parents of a child with cancer will know, we immediately wanted to do something to aid the fight – not just ours, but everyone else’s too. I guess the biggest part of it is that it gives you something else to focus on. Something positive.

So we started fundraising. We did golf days, raffles, cake stalls, carrot walks and fun day events for the community. Since 2010 we’ve raised more than £15,000. It’s all been rather hard work but we’ve had awesome fun along the way.

Trekking through the unknown

Photo of Katy Bishop

Taking a well-earned breather.

This challenge was completely different from everything else. I was flying halfway across the world to trek through the unknown. It was simply mind-blowing.

I had to raise £2,600 but I’ve already achieved around £6,000! Leading up to the event, myself, my brother-in-law and the local community did many challenges and all the funds raised went towards the total for this trek. It’s been amazing.

We started with a trek in a hot, dusty ravine to acclimatise to the heat and terrain. It was around 45 degrees and the going was tough. The group struggled a little, concerned at what we had let ourselves in for, some more than others, but we supported each other along and got through it.

The next day we made an early start to the canyon. Once you descend the ‘Hilltop’ the only means of transport are feet, be it yours or mules. There really are no words to describe what you see. The photos cannot quite bring to life the true majesty of the canyon.

You’ve got to be very careful to look where you’re walking or you’ll be tripping over rocks or off ledges. The canyon descends down from 5,200ft to 2,800ft, most of that initially on the first mile and a half so the first bit of descent is steep and tricky. Once this has been negotiated the canyon opens up flatter and unbelievably, more lush.

Wifi at the Havasupai Indian Reservation

We trekked eight miles toward our campsite and through the Havasupai Indian Reservation where you must sign in. The tribe has tight control on tourists, allowing only a certain amount of people in and they have strict rules about no alcohol and so on.

I really did expect the tribe to be living in teepees but they live as we would, with modern facilities and wi-fi! Eight miles into the canyon and we were able to social media ourselves right up!

We trekked for three days through creeks and climbed down, then back up the 200ft Mooney Falls. We visited Beaver Falls and spent time there jumping off the waterfalls into the turquoise water.

Learning to trust your feet when you’re on a small ledge – it doesn’t always come easy. But that’s what so great about going in a group. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and we are able to support each other along.

The last day of the trek saw us up and out by 6am to beat the sun and we were in Las Vegas celebrating later that night. There was talk of the Canadian Rockies next year – watch this space!”

Katy’s story appears in the winter edition of our InFocus newsletter . If you’d like to receive InFocus you can join as a member (it’s free).

Take part in your own challenge

We have a number of once in a lifetime challenges taking place throughout 2016 across the globe – from Peru to Cambodia.  Check out our overseas charity treks page for more information.

S earch and rescue efforts are currently underway for 61-year-old Hantae Kim, who was reported missing while section hiking the Pacific Crest Trail near Fuller Ridge Trailhead in the San Jacinto Mountains.

The Chula Vista resident left home at 5 a.m. on Friday and was expected home by 2 a.m. on Sunday. Family members reported him missing when he failed to return.

Kim, whose car was discovered at the Fuller Ridge Trailhead, intended to hike to Snow Creek and back, a trail he had mapped on his AllTrails account. The missing hiker also reportedly sent photos to his family from locations along the trail, and was last heard from on the morning of July 6.

Amidst a scorching heat wave, much of California has been under an Excessive Heat Warning this past week. San Jacinto set a new record of 114 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday. Temperatures hardly cooled over the weekend, pushing the thermometer into triple digits through Saturday and Sunday.

Authorities and local SAR teams are utilizing coordinates from Kim’s phone and trail recordings to scour the formidable terrain in hopes of locating him. Kim is described as five feet, eight inches tall, weighing 170 pounds. According to photos, he is wearing a gray Columbia jacket, hat, and is carrying a small orange Osprey backpack.

This incident is separate from the other missing PCT hiker , Robert “Ambassador” Budinski, who was reported missing earlier this month near Idyllwild, California.

Anyone with information on Kim’s whereabouts is urged to contact the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office at 951-776-1099, extension 5.
