'Journey to Bethlehem': Lecrae, For King & Country's Joel Smallbone Star in Nativity Musical

Journey to Bethlehem

Grammy Award-winning Christian artists Joel Smallbone and Lecrae will star in a live-action Christmas musical that tells the story of Mary and Joseph and the birth of Jesus.

"Journey to Bethlehem" will be in theaters starting November 10. The musical will feature Academy Award nominee Antonio Banderas as King Herod, Fiona Palomo as Mary, Milo Manheim as Joseph, Joel Smallbone as Herod's son, Antipater, and Lecrae as the archangel Gabriel.

Film and TV music writer and composer Adam Anders directed this version of the nativity story.

"I first had the idea for the film years ago when I was looking for a musical to watch with my family at Christmastime," Anders said. "I want this movie to be a bright light this Christmas season — as bright as the star of Bethlehem."

The Journey To Bethlehem reportedly retells Mary and Joseph's journey through "humor, faith" and a blend of classic and new Christmas songs.

"A young woman carrying an unimaginable responsibility. A young man torn between love and honor. A jealous king who will stop at nothing to keep his crown. This live-action Christmas musical adventure for the entire family weaves classic Christmas melodies with humor, faith, and new pop songs in a retelling of the greatest story ever told—the story of Mary and Joseph and the birth of Jesus. A unique new entry into the collection of holiday classic movies, this epic Christmas musical is unlike any before it," reads the website's description.

The film's actors say the retelling of this world-changing biblical story will resonate with viewers.

"This is the story that turned B.C to A.D. Everything changed with the birth of Jesus," Smallbone said in a clip posted to Instagram. "The nativity story is sort of a musical at the heart of it. These angels show up and they're singing to shepherds."

Lecrae says he hopes the film bring hope and joy to viewers.

"It is a story that has been important for thousands of years. It needs to be told and retold," Lecrae said in a clip posted to Instagram. "What an amazing opportunity to be the first musical offering of a story this significant."

He continued, "People will experience the journey of Mary - this young girl who has the weight of the world on her shoulders. It's a unique vantage point and perspective that really does stay faithful to God's story, but at the same time adds so much color."

Essence

Lecrae On Latest Movie ‘Journey To Bethlehem’

T railblazers are often misunderstood, but Lecrae has never been afraid to walk off the beaten > Deep End, his journey as a Believer continues to be unorthodox. However, Lecrae fully takes ownership of this paradox, and uses his own personal testimony as a vehicle to help others understand that it is God’s grace that qualifies us, and not ourselves. His music has agitated some traditional, religious groups. Yet, his >Church Clothes, volumes 1-4 have found a way to disperse the gospel in a manner that lends itself towards grace and transparency.

Never one to be afraid of taking positive risks, Lecrae eagerly accepted the opportunity to play the angel, Gabriel, in Sony Pictures’ Affirm Films and Monarch Media’s recently released Journey To Bethlehem , a Bible-based musical retelling of the Nativity story. Just in time for the Christmas holiday, Lecrae spoke with Essence about his role, how he holds himself accountable, and how he balances his faith and career as a Believer in the arts and entertainment industry. “This is the greatest story ever told, the birth of the Savior of the world. And, Gabriel has to deliver this message to Mary. So, I read a lot about Gabriel in the scriptures, and tried my best to bring some of that to life in this film. In real life, I have not seen an angel, but I'm a firm believer that angels do exist, and I know that they are mentioned all throughout scripture. And, I knew there was a majesticness to Gabriel, and I wanted to capture that.”

While Christmas and the Nativity story have become synonymous with purchasing material things and consumption, for Lecrae the nativity story carries value, because it reminds him of the relatability of Jesus. “The fact that Jesus was born in less-than-ideal circumstances, and that He can relate to all of us. The fact that He would be God in the flesh, and make himself low and earthly, and be born into those circumstances [in a manger, and without a place to stay] that are not ideal, just shows that God still has a plan in the midst of struggle.” In this current culture of ‘followers’, Lecrae agrees that if you’re going to follow anyone, or seek someone’s validation, it should be Jesus.

Lecrae shares, “A lot of us are putting ourselves in a position to look for identity and purpose [on social media], and we tend to flaunt ourselves online to feel a sense of purpose . I think the nativity story, as it's depicted in Journey To Bethlehem, is painting a picture that brings a better understanding that we don't have to achieve purpose, but rather we receive purpose. And, Mary's purpose was received. She didn't have to earn that. God came to her and said, You're wonderfully and fearfully made, and you're going to birth the Savior of the world. And, if we're going to follow anyone, let's follow the person who gave us purpose in the first place, and that's God himself.”

Lecrae is not remiss to the fact that along with a platform comes responsibility . Yet, in our modern society and culture of crafting an online presence, church leadership coupled with accountability are not always necessarily the standard. However, he understands that having good people that you can trust around you is very important, as well as having trustworthy counsel to hold space for you, despite your success. When making business decisions in the arts and entertainment industry, he doesn’t try to do things alone. “I have good friends, and, of course, my pastor. I think it's just necessary to know who you are and to know where you stand. You're playing tug of war a lot of times [within the entertainment industry]. So, I always want to move in groups. I never want to be seen as a lone ranger. I've people surrounding me, praying for me, and walking through things with me. So, it's never a solo mission. There wasn’t just Daniel. There was Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, and they had to walk through that fire together. I think that makes all the difference in the world.”

Accountability and genuine community are key when one desires to thrive in faith and grow. While on the set of Journey to Bethlehem, Lecrae shares that working with the director, Adam Anders, and his castmates was an amazing experience. The atmosphere was filled with faith, togetherness and fun. “I hope that it's a film that viewers find entertaining. It’s a musical, and it's meant to have an entertainment value, and I feel that this film does that to the highest degree. The story, the acting, the dancing, and the music are so good. It just blows people away.” While it’s always a good time to revisit the birth of Jesus and the Nativity story, for those who celebrate Christmas, Journey to Bethlehem is a light-hearted, contemporary musical that the entire family will enjoy.

Lecrae reveals 'spiritual attacks' occurred on set of 'journey to bethlehem': 'darkness tries to come'.

Journey to Bethlehem

Grammy Award-winning artist Lecrae recently opened up about the challenges of portraying the angel Gabriel in “Journey to Bethlehem” and the spiritual warfare that occurred on the set of the upcoming Christmas musical highlighting the story of Mary and Joseph.

In an interview with The Christian Post, the 43-year-old singer-songwriter revealed that the film's spiritually charged storyline fostered a close-knit community. While on set, director Adam Anders, Lecrae and his co-stars, Antonio Banderas, Milo Manheim, Fiona Palomo, Joel Smallbone and others would eat, talk and pray together to unite against unseen opposition.

“I think what a lot of people don't realize is that when you're pushing a message so potent and so powerful, there's darkness that tries to come, involve itself, and stop things and halt things,” Lecrae said.

“And I think we were keenly aware that that could be the reality. So, there was a lot of bonding. … It was just a reality of, ‘Hey, we want to be there for each other because we don't know what kind of spiritual attacks may come about. We don't know what this could look like.’ There was a sobriety, but then it was just a joy that we got to be a part of something so profound and so great.”

And spiritual warfare did come. The artist revealed there was a day when shooting almost didn’t happen: “All kinds of chaos was ensuing,” he recalled. “It was my first day on set, and so I was like, ‘I don’t know if we’re going to be able to shoot.’”

“There were animal issues, there were so many things happening in the city, and it felt like there was sincerely a spiritual attack. … But God just opened up the doors, and everything just started changing at the last minute and rearranging. Adam was so nimble to switch this up and switch that up, and we made it happen. It was amazing to see.”

The first-ever theatrical musical of the Nativity, “ Journey to Bethlehem ” tells the story of Mary and Joseph and the birth of Jesus using classic Christmas songs and new pop songs written for the film. Fiona Palomo stars as Mary, Milo Manheim plays Joseph and Antonio Banderas plays the vindictive King Herod.

Lecrae described playing the angel Gabriel as both "challenging" and "daunting." He turned to a Christian acting coach and immersed himself in biblical texts to portray the angel's monumental message to Mary about the coming Messiah.

“Every time humans would encounter angels, it was always like, ‘Wow,’” he said. “Just to imagine the weightiness of the message and the messenger at the same time and just putting myself in Mary's position made me realize what an incredible opportunity to be able to bear this news, to be able to come to the world and say, ‘Hey, the Savior's coming.’

“I just walked away with a different feel for the weight of it all, a different feel for how important the Savior of humanity being brought to Earth was. It made me cherish the message even more.”

“Journey to Bethlehem” is a modern retelling of the Nativity story and takes some creative liberties with the timeline of events and the characters. Lecrae acknowledged that historically, there has been some hesitancy in portraying angels on screen due to the fear that “people will begin to worship these creatures.” “Journey to Bethlehem,” he said, portrays Gabriel as a humble messenger, intentionally eliminating any inclination to deify the celestial being.

“I loved how Adam wanted to add some comical aspects to it to kind of downplay and show, this is not God,” he said. “This is not a creature worthy of worship. This is a messenger from God. So, he's going to bump his head; he's going to stumble over his words. He is not full of himself. He is aware of, ‘OK, I’ve got to get this message from God to Mary, and I am not enough myself, all-powerful and all-knowing.’ I think that was just an aspect of humility; angels can fall. It was a picture of the humility of knowing that I am not God, and I'm not here to play a role that should be worshiped or deified. I think that was the beautiful part of it.”

While starring in a faith-based musical marks a departure from Lecrae’s usual milieu — he’s best known as a singer, songwriter and record producer — it didn't stray far from his core values and beliefs.

“I love expressing and articulating in creative ways. They're kind of all in a similar vein, just slightly different,” he said, adding that he sees more film roles in his future.

“I had a I had a blast doing it. To see it all come to fruition is so amazing. To be a part of an incredible cast, and I learned a lot. … I'm excited to keep pushing forward.”

Though “Journey to Bethlehem” is a blatantly faith-based film, Lecrae, who has been open about his own struggles with doubt and deconstruction, said he hopes skeptics and non-believers will watch the film. He stressed that the cinematography, storytelling and music will resonate with a broad audience, transcending religious affiliations.

“If I don't believe in Jesus, the Bible or any of those particular things, why would I see this movie? Because it's great art,” he said. “And if you're a fan of great art, you're going to enjoy the storytelling in this, you're going to enjoy the cinematography, the acting, its phenomenal music. If you enjoy 'High School Musical,' you will enjoy this as well.”

“Christians are responsible for building hospitals and colleges, and it was to serve people, and people benefited from the service of believers,” the singer added. “I think people will benefit from the service of great art, great music, it will be a blessing to your soul. And you never know what you may walk away believing after you watch.”

“Journey to Bethlehem” is the first musical released from Affirm Films, the Christian branch of Sony. The film debuted in theaters on Nov. 10.

Lecrae on Playing the Angel Gabriel in New Musical JOURNEY TO BETHLEHEM

journey to bethlehem lecrae

By Cooper Dowd, Movieguide® Staff

Akin to HAMILTON and recent upbeat, critically acclaimed musicals, JOURNEY TO BETHLEHEM takes the genre to a new level of storytelling and stars Antonio Banderas, Joel Smallbone, Lecrae and Fiona Palomo.

The movie’s synopsis reads: “A young woman carrying an unimaginable responsibility. A young man torn between love and honor. A jealous king who will stop at nothing to keep his crown. This live-action Christmas musical adventure for the entire family weaves classic Christmas melodies with humor, faith and new pop songs in a retelling of the greatest story ever told, the story of Mary and Joseph and the birth of Jesus. A unique new entry into the collection of holiday classic movies, this epic Christmas musical is unlike any before it.”

Grammy award-winning artist Lecrae recently sat down with Movieguide® to talk about the musical and his role as the angel Gabriel.

“I play the angel Gabriel, who gets to deliver the news to Mary, and for me, that was a massive opportunity because [what] better news to deliver,” he said. “So you know, just to be able to carry that weight, was encouraging to me.”

Although Lecrae is familiar with music and singing, he said that the acting part of the movie was a welcome challenge.

“I’m used to being stretched in terms of the music, and so doing some of the music for the film, and in the film, was not tough at all. But I want it to be taken seriously, and I didn’t want to hinder the audience’s ability to enjoy the film by being a bad actor,” he explained. “So I had to take some classes, and I really just had to hone the skill set of delivering these lines and playing this character, so that was a new challenge for me, but I welcomed it because it made me better.”

While the story of Joseph and Mary’s journey to Bethlehem is a popular one to adapt for the big screen, Lecrae said that the musicality of JOURNEY TO BETHLEHEM added to the powerful retelling of one of the greatest stories in history.

“We’ve already seen the phenomenal impact of telling powerful stories to music with the phenomenon of HAMILTON,” he said. “I think this is something that’s being brought to the big screen with the same level of artistic excellence. A lot of times, people may have lower expectations because it’s a musical or it’s about a faith-based theme. But no, the acting is top tier, and the writing and storytelling is top tier. So I’m excited for people to just encounter it. I think they’re going to be blown away by what they see.”

Lecrae said that he hopes audiences understand better the humanity of Mary and Joseph through JOURNEY TO BETHLEHEM.

“It’s important for people to see the humanity of these characters, like seeing Mary as a human being who’s going through stuff and wrestling through stuff, the humanity of Joseph, and just the wrestles and all of those things. I think sometimes we remove that and make it just kind of this mystical thing,” he explained. “But for this amazing miracle of the birth of the Savior of the world to come to regular human beings who would be like you and I, it’s something phenomenal. And so I would hope that people walk away saying, ‘Wow, God can impact little old me and use little old me in the same way that he would use Mary and Joseph.’”

“It’s so crazy how God uses the story to transform our lives and I get to be a part of the retelling of this story,” he added of his own role in the movie. “I think that’s the cool part about it is that throughout the film, you’re always aware that there’s something big and amazing about the birth of Jesus coming. But you are walking with Mary, as she’s navigating her own humanity and she’s wrestling.”

“I think it’s important that we go out to the theaters first because it just shows the demand for something like this in society and culture and it helps,” he said. “This is something that we need to invest more in because we see how important it is to society. So when we show up to the box office, we’re telling a message with our tickets, and I think that’s very important as well.”

JOURNEY TO BETHLEHEM is scheduled to release in theaters on Nov. 10.

Watch: Lecrae on playing the angel Gabriel in Journey to Bethlehem

A new featurette gives us a taste of the humour in his first scene..

journey to bethlehem lecrae

“Fear not.” It’s often the first thing an angel says to someone in the Bible. Apparently there’s something so startling about the appearance of an angel—something so unusual, so transcendent—that the angels have to put people at their ease first before they, the angels, can go on to deliver the messages they were sent to deliver.

Journey to Bethlehem , the upcoming musical about the birth of Jesus, puts a slightly more humorous spin on this trope—and a new featurette shows us how. Here, Mary is startled because the angel woke her up with a loud strange voice , and, after the angel tells her not to be afraid, he apologizes to her and says, “I’m sorry I frightened you.”

You can watch the featurette here:

I spoke to the film’s co-writer/director Adam Anders about this scene, and about the use of humour within it. From the interview I posted two days ago:

And then there’s the angel Gabriel, who, as played by Christian rapper Lecrae, is first seen nervously rehearsing what he’s going to say to Mary at the Annunciation. “I just wanted to make this disarming and not threatening, this large man coming into the bedroom of a young girl in the middle of the night,” says Anders. “So how do we depict that in a way that’s wholesome and fun? Yet then it goes from that disarming beginning of that scene to being more and more serious as we go, and it slowly shifts to reverent and very powerful. “So it’s all just designed to, you know, keep kids engaged and frame the story in a way that the whole family can digest and just have fun, and maybe they can talk and go read the actual story, go read it after they see the movie.”

Meanwhile, the studio sent out an e-mail this week announcing that they have put out some discussion guides and other resources for the film. You can see those here .

The movie comes to theatres November 10, i.e. two weeks from now.

'Journey to Bethlehem': Lecrae, For King & Country's Joel Smallbone Star in Nativity Musical

“Journey to Bethlehem”

Directed by Adam Anders

Culture Representation:  Taking place in the Israeli cities of Nazareth and Bethlehem, the musical “Journey to Bethlehem” (based on New Testament teachings in the Christian Bible) features a racially diverse group of characters (white, Asian, Latino and black) representing the working-class, middle-class and wealthy.

Culture Clash:  A virgin named Mary, who is reluctant to marry her fiancé Joseph, is banished from her family after claiming that she is giving birth to the son of God, and the couple goes into hiding from the evil king Herod, who wants to kill the children of Bethlehem.

Culture Audience:  “Journey to Bethlehem” will appeal primarily to fans of musicals and faith-based movies that put a contemporary spin on ancient teachings.

journey to bethlehem lecrae

As an earnest faith-based musical, “Journey to Bethlehem” does what it’s supposed to do for its intended audience. Other people might be surprised by the charm and appeal of this pop music version of the Bible’s nativity story about Jesus Christ. “Journey to Bethlehem” has some impressive visual effects and production design, considering its relatively low production budget of a reported $6 million. There are also engaging performances from the cast members, even if some of the characters are close to being cariactures.

Directed by Adam Anders (who co-wrote the “Journey to Bethlehem” screenplay with Peter Barsocchini), “Journey to Bethlehem” begins with this voiceover narration: “Long ago, in the time of Caesar Augustus and in the land of Judah, ruled by the evil King Herod, there lived a young woman named Mary, who didn’t know yet that she was chosen by God to fulfill an ancient prophecy to bring forth a promised king sent to save the world.” That king, of course is Jesus Christ.

“Journey to Bethlehem” (which was filmed in Spain) stays faithful to the basics of the biblical story but takes a lot of liberties in the interpretations of the characters. Just like in the Bible, the three kings who knew of the prophecy see the star that signals the arrival of this divine child. In “Journey to Bethlehem,” these three kings are portrayed as a somewhat comedic trio that bickers and banters with each other. It’s not slapstick insult comedy like the Three Stooges. It’s more like the biblical version of Spinal Tap.

Balthazar (played by Geno Segers) is the king with astronomy skills. Caspar (played by Rizwan Manji) is described in the movie as the king who is “the greatest scholar in all the lands.” Melchior (played by Omid Djalili) is the king who’s a great navigator and a map expert. Caspar (who is has a super-serious personality) and Melchior (who has a goofy personality) frequently clash with each other, while easygoing and optimistic Caspar is the most likely one of the three kings to keep the peace when there are conflicts within this lively trio.

Meanwhile, in Bethlehem, Mary (played by Fiona Palomo) is dreading her upcoming arranged marriage because she would rather be a teacher than a wife at this stage in her life. Mary has been betrothed to a man whom she hasn’t met yet. Her father Joachim (played by Antonio Cantos), who is a teacher, tells Mary: “You are a girl. You will be a wife, not a teacher, as tradition demands.” Mary’s mother Ana (played by Maria Pau Pigem) agrees with her husband.

At an open-air market, Mary has a “meet cute” moment with a young adult stranger named Joseph (played by Milo Manheim) when they accidentally bump into each other. He seems to be immediately attracted to her, but she seems to be a little attracted to him too. However, Mary is preoccupied with her worries about the upcoming marriage that she does not want. She’s polite to Joseph but she dismisses his attempts to flirt with her.

Meanwhile, King Herod (played by Antonio Banderas) is fixated on conquering more lands and people. He’s concerned that his eldest son Antipater (played by Joel Smallbone) doesn’t have what it takes to be the type of heir that King Herod wants. King Herod tells Antipater: “A king doesn’t need to be loved—only obeyed and feared.” Antipater, who desperately wants his father’s approval, spends most of the story carrying out Herod’s orders.

When it comes time for Mary to meet her fiancé, the meeting takes place at the home of Mary and her family. The fiancé arrives with his parents. Mary is shocked to find out that her fiancé is Joseph, the same person she met at the market. She’s immediately turned off (and tells Joseph that in a private conversation), because she thinks he shouldn’t have been flirting with her if he knew he was going to marry someone.

Joseph tries to smooth thigs over, but Mary becomes even more resistant to the idea of marrying him. Joseph’s domineering and haughty parents Jacob (played by Antonio Gil) and Rachel (played by Alicia Borrachero) are determined to make this marriage happen, because they want Joseph to inherit what can be offered as part of Mary’s dowry. Mary’s parents also insist that the marriage take place.

Not too long after Mary and Joseph have their first meeting that does not end well, she is visited at night by the angel Gabriel (played by Lecrae), who tells Mary that she will be pregnant and give birth to the son of God while she’s still a virgin. The experience is so profound for Mary, she tells her family members about it. They think she is mentally ill and blasphemous and beg her not to tell Joseph and his family.

However, Mary tells Joseph and his family. And when it becomes obvious that she is pregnant, the wedding is called off, and Mary is exiled to Hebron to live with her middle-aged cousin Elizabeth (played by Yaël Belicha), who is also having a “miracle pregnancy.” Elizabeth and her mute husband Zachariah (played by José María Rueda) welcome Mary into their home and are very protective of her.

King Herod hears about a blasphemous young woman who claims to be pregnant with a child of God. He’s determined to find her to kill her and her unborn child, so he sends Antipater on the hunt to find her. The rest of “Journey to Bethlehem” will not be a surprise to people who already know the story from the Bible.

“Journey to Bethlehem” has very good staging of the musical numbers, which often pop and glow with creative lighting and visual effects. Banderas hams it up as the story’s chief villain in a way that almost verges on parody but has enough self-awareness to hold back and deliver a convincing performance. During King Herod’s solo performance of “Good to Be King,” the set transforms into a menacing replication of the depths of hell to put an emphasis of how evil King Herod is.

Palomo and Manheim give engaging performances as Mary and Joseph. Mary is strong-willed and independent, which is an interpretation that might or might not be to a viewer’s liking. Joseph is portrayed as a forward-thinking person who doesn’t treat women as inferior to men. The blossoming romance between Mary and Joseph is portrayed as sweet and something that doesn’t happen right away because of Mary’s reluctance.

As far the movie’s original songs, “Journey to Bethlehem” has has some that are memorable and others that are on the bland side. Ada Anders, Nikki Anders and Peer Åström wrote the music for “Journey to Bethlehem,” whose musical highlights the anthemic climax of “The Nativity Song.” Antipater’s “In My Blood” brings some psychological “daddy issues” angst to the movie, while the three kings’ song “Three Wise Guys” brings much comic relief.

“Journey to Bethlehem” sometimes comes across as a production with a touring company (not the original cast) of a Broadway show. There’s plenty of musical talent, but it’s not the best of the best. However, “Journey to Bethlehem” is entertaining enough for anyone who wants to see a religious musical that isn’t overly preachy or pretentious and can be enjoyed by people of many generations.

Affirm Films released “Journey to Bethlehem” in U.S. cinemas on November 10, 2023. The movie was released on digital and VOD on December 8, 2023. “Journey to Bethlehem” will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on January 16, 2024.

The baylor project on love, music and why booking separate hotel rooms is essential: ‘it’ll save your marriage’.

Trailblazers are often misunderstood, but Lecrae has never been afraid to walk off the beaten path. As a Grammy-award-winning Christian rap music artist, New York Times bestselling author, and creator of the new podcast Deep End, his journey as a Believer continues to be unorthodox. However, Lecrae fully takes ownership of this paradox, and uses his own personal testimony as a vehicle to help others understand that it is God’s grace that qualifies us, and not ourselves. His music has agitated some traditional, religious groups. Yet, his style of Christian rap has swayed younger generations into pondering a bit longer about the gospel of Jesus. Lecrae’s music albums Church Clothes, volumes 1-4 have found a way to disperse the gospel in a manner that lends itself towards grace and transparency.

Never one to be afraid of taking positive risks, Lecrae eagerly accepted the opportunity to play the angel, Gabriel, in Sony Pictures’ Affirm Films and Monarch Media’s recently released Journey To Bethlehem, a Bible-based musical retelling of the Nativity story. In real life, I have not seen an angel, but I’m a firm believer that angels do exist, and I know that they are mentioned all throughout scripture.

Lecrae shares, “A lot of us are putting ourselves in a position to look for identity and purpose [on social media], and we tend to flaunt ourselves online to feel a sense of purpose. I think the nativity story, as it’s depicted in Journey To Bethlehem, is painting a picture that brings a better understanding that we don’t have to achieve purpose, but rather we receive purpose. And, Mary’s purpose was received. She didn’t have to earn that. God came to her and said, You’re wonderfully and fearfully made, and you’re going to birth the Savior of the world. And, if we’re going to follow anyone, let’s follow the person who gave us purpose in the first place, and that’s God himself.”

Lecrae is not remiss to the fact that along with a platform comes responsibility. I think it’s just necessary to know who you are and to know where you stand. You’re playing tug of war a lot of times [within the entertainment industry]. So, I always want to move in groups. I never want to be seen as a lone ranger. I’ve people surrounding me, praying for me, and walking through things with me. So, it’s never a solo mission.

“I hope that it’s a film that viewers find entertaining. It’s a musical, and it’s meant to have an entertainment value, and I feel that this film does that to the highest degree.

  • Trivia One of a handful of smallish budget films made by Affirm Films that Sony Pictures distributed that have strong Christian or moral themes. Although Sony knew that none of them were going to be blockbuster hits, they also recognized that they would tap into an element of Western society that would help promote the film within their sphere of influence and gain a loyal audience as well as encourage discussion. Sony decided on this approach after they regretted turning down the chance to distribute 'The Way' back in 2010, a low-budget film about a spiritual journey undertaken by a grieving father (Martin Sheen) that was eventually given a release through independent distributors and went on to receive good reviews and proved a favorite among many communities.
