The 6 Best Horse Farm Tours in Lexington, Kentucky

horse stable tours near me

TripSavvy / Taylor McIntyre

Lexington, Kentucky, is known for two things: whiskey and horses. Often referred to as the Horse Capital of the World, the city is home to more than 400 horse farms and the famous Keeneland Race Course (featured in several movies). It has bred more Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown winners than anywhere else in the world. Race fans and equestrians alike flock to Lexington to see how these horses live and train. With so many venues to interact with these horses, it can be hard to decide where to start. Here is your go-to roundup of Lexington, Kentucky's best horse farm tours.

Jonabell Farm

Courtesy of Jonabell Farm

Jonabell Farm, home to HH Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin operation, is one of the most successful breeding sites globally, producing more than 200 stakes-winning racehorses. This tour takes guests through the history and current-day practices of Jonabell, as well as an up-close viewing of their current stallions. A shuttle tour is also available, featuring a scenic drive over Jonabells’ 800 acres of paddocks to see the mares and foals on the farm.

Three Chimneys Farm

Three Chimneys is one of the most respected stud farms in the business. This tour takes guests through the palatial stables and allows for some facetime with their current horses. The tour continues on to walk visitors through the breeding process and all safety measures that Three Chimneys takes to ensure the health and safety of these prestigious horses. It concludes with a walk around the green paddocks where the horses enjoy acres of land. This scenic farm is an excellent stop for newbies or lifelong fans of the sport.

Claiborne Farm

Courtesy of Claiborne Farm

This 109-year-old farm is often cited as the "Horse Capital of the World." Claiborne Farm boasts 3,000 acres for its prized stallions to run and has been home to 300 sires of champions, 10 Kentucky Derby, and six Triple Crown winners. This tour lets guests view the breeding shed and current horses that call Claiborne home and ends with viewing the famous Secretariat's gravesite. This is a can't-miss for any horse racing fan—in fact, the Queen of England has visited twice!

Denali Stud

Courtesy of Denali Stud Farm

Denali Stud is a world-renowned horse farm that has trained a litany of winning horses and has sold more than $475 million worth of horses since 1990. A Denali tour will take guests through their impressive history and current breeding and training practices. In the spring, guests can get up close and personal with the mares and foals, and on lucky days guests have been able to watch foals be born!

New Vocations

Courtesy of New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program

Get a unique view of what happens after the racing stops. New Vocations is the oldest and largest racehorse adoption program in the United States. Focusing on rehabilitation, retraining, and rehoming, this organization saves retired racehorses from an otherwise uncertain future and promotes their use as riding horses, sport horses, or simply great companions. Working with more than 500 horses a year, New Vocations has managed to rehome more than 7,500 horses since its inception in 1992.

While not a farm tour, Keeneland is an absolute must for any equestrian fan visiting Lexington. The famous racetrack is also the largest thoroughbred sale site globally and offers several different tours that take guests behind the scenes of both the racing and sales sides. The horses' morning workouts are free and open to the public, and guests interested in betting during a race can talk to the newly instituted “bet-ologists” who walk newcomers through the wagering process.

Great Tour!

Diane, our tour leader, was so informative about every part of the tour. I can’t believe how much we saw and learned during the four hours together…I knew nothing about horses before this tour, but Diane made the whole experience a joy, especially when we had the opportunities to get up close and personal with the horses and foals.

Where Education Becomes A Vacation

History of the Farm and Family

Shannon and Karen Cobbs own and operate Grandview Clydesdales with their three sons in Ocala, Florida. They were both born and raised in the horse business and both have had Clydesdales their entire lives. Shannon was born in Indiana and raised in the midwest on a large agriculture farm where Clydesdales were just part of the day to day operations. Karen was born in Manitoba Canada and was part of a large family grain farm that always had horses and Clydesdales as well. So the million dollar question is how did Florida get in the picture? Shannon’s family has shipped hay to Florida to sell to horse farms for over 40 years and he spent much of his youth coming to Florida monthly with his parents and it always felt like home. Shannon’s grandparents had a large cattle operation in Bushnell Florida when he was young and the state just grew to be part of him. So with the hay operation and the horses it was an easy but big decision to move the horses and family to the Horse Capital of the World in 2013. Shannon and Karen decided in the winter of 2013 that we were going to start looking for property around Ocala, Florida. Finding the farm and purchasing it is another story in itself, but they found a farm that fit and couldn’t wait to make it their own. Relocating one of the largest Clydesdale breeding operations in the world has been a very interesting experience.

horse stable tours near me

The move from old farm to new farm was 1007 miles one way. Shannon has made so many trips back and forth, to move at the time over 60 head of Clydesdales and all that comes with that size of an operation. But don’t forget the family had to move as well…. It was honestly one of the biggest transitions they have endured. They have been in construction mode since 2013 and still are, but things are starting to come together.

We create it better.

Stay tuned for the opening of our brand new gift shop. Offering all of the best Clydesdale gear and collections.

Our beautiful Riding Trails are open all year-round

A very nice way to see our magnificent acreage! Perfect for a first timer or an experienced rider that’s a bit rusty.

Intermediate Ride

Walk and trot. The next level in riding, about one third of your time will be trotting. There is definitely a bit more skill needed to be comfortable on this ride.

Advanced Ride

Walk, trot and canter. For the most experienced rider. The rider needs to have the ability and skill to “communicate” with the horse to get beyond a trot and into the gait of a canter.

Junior Wranglers

For the children under 48″ tall. Parents can even lead their kid’s pony if comfortable. Our “ponies” are typically from our retired trail ride string. They have been with us for a very, very long time (some even 25 years!) and now have been rewarded with light duty for the remainder of their lives with us.

Horseback Riding Demonstrations

Still have some riding questions? Not sure about how or where to hold your horse’s reins? Is it heels down or heels up? The riding demonstration will help you understand why we do what we do when riding a horse. You should feel more comfortable after one of these demonstrations. Ask questions, please!

Daily Horse Parades

Catch “The Greatest Herd In The World” twice daily during our Horse Parades. Our wranglers will share facts and answer questions while you take pictures and make memories.

Tractor-Drawn Wagon Rides

Typically a night event. When the “Big Boys” are sleeping, we still run the hay rides; but with a big, orange colored tractor named Kubota! The hayrides will drop riders off at our campfire, marshmallow roast and sing along. A very fun evening for the entire family.

Horse Shoeing Demonstrations

Think putting shoes on a horse is a lost art? Well guess again; it’s actually a thriving industry! Watch our expert farriers (blacksmith) shoe the horses of the world’s largest guest ranch, right here in our specially designed Blacksmith’s Shop.

Trail Riding Guide

Trail riding guide with helpful hints and policies.

Rocking Horse Ranch is home to one of the largest saddle horse operations in North America, where each horse receives exceptional care and training. It is important to note that there are inherent risks associated with being around animals. Proper conduct is necessary to ensure the safety of our guests, staff and horses. Below are some important guidelines for guest participation.

1. All riders must be at least 48” tall and at least 7 years of age to participate in a trail ride. 2. There is a standard weight limit of 300lbs per rider. This is for the safety of the the horse. If you are unsure about your weight, we have a scale available at the stables. 3. Please note that there are limited horses available to accommodate riders over 250 pounds. 4. Before joining us on a trail ride, all riders must sign a waiver. Guests under the age of 18 require the signature of a consenting adult. 5. All riders under the age of 18 must wear a helmet as required by New York State law. In addition, we recommended all riders to wear a CHA certified helmet and provide them free of charge at the stables. 6. You should not ride if you: have neck back or bone injuries; have heart trouble or high blood pressure; are pregnant; have had recent surgery or a pre-existing illness. 7. There is no cell phone use or picture taking while on the trail rides. Riders will need both hands free and available to properly control the horse. 8. Riding Levels

We offer 3 levels of riding.

Beginner Ride is suitable for all guests meeting the above mentioned requirements.

Intermediate Ride includes walking and trotting. It is recommended that guests have at least ten hours experience riding a horse and are comfortable steering, stopping, and controlling a horse at a walk and a trot.

Advanced Ride is for experienced riders only. A riding assessment will be conducted by a member of our stables staff. Advanced riders should be able to demonstrate complete control over their horse at a canter.

The Riding Experience

Our rides go out in a guided trail fashion, meaning that the horses are lined up nose to tail, single file. Riders are responsible for maintaining single file formation as well as space between their horse and the horse in front of them. Each rider is shown how to stop and steer and will be responsible for controlling their horse out on the trail. Our experienced wranglers will be positioned throughout each ride to offer assistance if necessary.

This plantation was once the home of Fort Randall, a confederate fort from 1861 to 1863. During the War of the States, the US-North Atlantic Squadron was very active in this area. The remains of a cannonball still lies in place on the Battery Hill beside Fort Randall. The open fields at the entrance to our stables were originally cleared by the 9000 confederate soldiers, as the tree line along the Intracoastal Waterway served as a barrier from coming enemy ships. The property was once home to Billy the Kid, and even Blackbeard was said to have used our island as a safe haven.

Moscow theatres

Moscow has always been and still remains the city of theatres. This magnificent capital attracts theatregoers from all over the world. Here are the theatres we like and truly recommend you to visit.

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theatre

On 28 March 1776, Catherine II granted the prosecutor, Prince Pyotr Urusov, the privilege of maintaining theatre performances of all kinds, including masquerades, balls and other forms of entertainment. And that is where Moscow’s Bolshoi ( Big ) Theatre starts its history. The building of the Bolshoi Theatre, one of Moscow’s symbols, was opened on 20 October 1856, on Tsar Alexander II’s coronation day.

The Bolshoi Theatre is a symbol of Russia for all time. It was awarded this honor due to the major contribution it made to the history of the Russian performing arts. This history is on-going and today Bolshoi Theatre artists continue to contribute to it many bright pages.

Visit the theatre to watch the magnificent Russian operas and ballets. Make sure you are going to see the performance on Historic Stage.

Site: http://bolshoi.ru

Maly Theatre

The Maly Theatre

One of the oldest Moscow theatres – the Maly (Small) Theatre – is situated on Teatralnaya Ploschad (Theatre Square) neighboring the famous Bolshoi (Big) Theatre. The history of the theatre dates back to 1756 when the theatre company was founded by Catherine the Great’s will. During the 19th Century the theatre has become a favorite stage for some of the Russian most noted playwrights, in particular Ostrovsky who premiered 40 of his 52 plays here.

If you want to enjoy classical Russian theatre, see plays written by Chekhov, Pushkin, Ostrovsky and Gogol the Maly is probably one of the best choices. The theatre follows Russian drama tradition and makes classical productions. So with a little prior knowledge of the general plot of the play will be able to follow the action quite well without the help of subtitles.

Site: http://www.maly.ru/

Moscow Art Theatre

The Moscow Art Theatre (MKhAT)

The theatre was established by K. S. Stanislavsky and V. I. Nemirovich-Danchenko in 1898 under the name Moscow Art Theatre (MKhAT). This is the first theatre in Russia, who practiced the real reform and together with young actors created modern repertoire. Nevertheless, in today’s Theatre classic world literature is staged as well as the modern patriotic literature. It is loved by Muscovites and the capitals guests for traditions, wonderful cast and bold experiments.

Sovremennik

Sovremennik Theatre

Sovremennik Theatre was founded by a group of young Soviet actors during the «Khrushchev Thaw». Among the founders were Oleg Yefremov, Galina Volchek, Igor Kvasha, Liliya Tolmachyova, Yevgeniy Yevstigneyev and Oleg Tabakov, now famous Russian actors. The debut production was Victor Rozov’s play «Forever Alive».

Nowadays it is one of the most popular Moscow theatres, with interesting premiers and wide basic repertoire, involving masters of Moscow stage and talented beginning actors.

«Peter Fomenko’s Workshop» Theatre

«Peter Fomenko's Workshop» Theatre

This is a young and progressive theatre. The troupe consists of actors with innovative way of thinking and staging plays. They unite the passionate desire to experiments and classic Russian theatrical traditions. During 15 years of theatre’s existence there were created 36 plays which were rewarded with national and international theatrical awards.

Theatre of Nations

Theatre of Nations

The fascinating building in pseudo-Russian style has been taken by theaters from 1885. Nowadays, Theatre of Nations, a unique structure that has no analogues in national theatre, is located there. Today Theatre of Nations is one of the most successful producer project with ambitious and realized art plans. The activities of the theater are in many ways exclusive. Thus, it introduces the Russian audiences to outstanding examples of European theater. The Theatre of Nations holds a variety of theatre programs, organizes national and international festivals, presents the best Russian and foreign productions of all genres and trends and produces its own performances. Lack of a constant troupe allows keeping star cast and genre flexibility — from drama and comedy to post-drama and ballet.

Gogol Centre

horse stable tours near me

Recently renovated Gogol Centre is a theatre that seeks a constant dialogue with reality. Debates and conferences on the most current themes in the discussion club «Gogol+», world premieres of the movies that have never been released in Russia in the program «Gogol cinema», rare recordings of the great 20th and 21st centuries theatre performances in the public multimedia library, large music concerts and of course performances on several stages by the most remarkable Russian and foreign directors. All this makes it possible to explore the vast spheres of modern Art while remaining in the same space.

Praktika Theatre

Praktika Theatre

Praktika Theatre is a small theatre venue and company focused on new drama. it was opened in 2005 as a theatre in search of contemporary topics and stories, of the present-day language, a new style and a new generation of playwrights and productions.

Today this is probably the only theatre in Moscow, which sharply addresses political and social issues and is supported by distinguished directors from Russia and Europe. The name of the theatre – «Praktika» means that the theatre offers various practical workshops. Praktika offers yoga seminars, psychology and dance workshops. There is a cinema club which introduces Moscow to recent international film releases.

The Moscow International House of Music

The Moscow International House of Music

This gorgeous music center, settled down at the banks of the Moskva River, organizes performances of national and foreign symphony orchestras, chamber ensembles, solo instrumentalists, opera singers, ballet dancers, theatre companies, jazz bands, variety and traditional ensembles.

It accommodates three concert halls placed on three different levels and having separate entrances. Each hall is executed in its own style and special array. The rows of seats ascend up in a form of an amphitheater providing a good view of the stage from every place of the auditorium. There is a summer terrace on the podium of MIPAC designed for different open-air promenade concerts and festive events. It has a common architectural space with the winter garden and the foyer of the Great Hall.
