Renew Your Spirit

You decide whether to fully immerse yourself in the activities on board. Settle in and listen to the captivating stories from your guide. Or just completely chill to the natural rhythms of nature. I’d suggest a little bit of all three.

Snorkel if Mather Nature allows.  Join the search for turtles, dolphins, dugongs, seabirds or maybe something more.  Sneak off to your own private corners of the pristine beach .

hervey-bay-eco-marine-tours24.png

We navigate smooth waters

Our vessel, the Milbi, navigates through smooth waters only. This ensures that you will have a truly relaxing experience from beginning to end.  The comfort and safety of our guests is our priority.  The Great Sandy Marine Park is known for its calmer waters.  It's our aim to provide a relaxing experience.  If Mother Nature does not provide the best conditions we will ensure that you can reschedule at a time more suitable to you.

hervey-bay-eco-marine-tours14.png

Indigenous Experience

The only Indigenous experience in Hervey Bay where you can dive deep into the indigenous and oldest living culture while cruising the bluest shallows and all the unique beauty that surrounds the Great Sandy Straits. We combine marine adventures and captivating dreamtime stories delivered directly by our friends the Butchulla people. The ocean is very special to us and we want to protect it; but to do so, we must understand nature and we believe there's not better teachers to learn from than the Butchulla people. Sailing not for you? Enjoy our amazing Walking Tour.

hervey-bay-eco-marine-tours31.png

Easy access vessel

As you climb aboard our beautiful glass-bottomed boat, you’ll know that something special is about to take place.  Easy to board and steady, like the sea turtles she is named for, Milbi goes gently on these pristine waters. You'll be delivered right up onto beach and we are fully wheelchair accessible. There is a bathroom available on board.

We give back to nature

Profits from our tours subsidise the cost of school excursions in the Fraser Coast region. We  provide students with a close experience with nature and the Butchulla people. Our aim is to keep bringing a legacy of sustainability, community and kindness. When you choose us, you choose to protect our planet too!

Why Is Fraser Island Called K'gari?

Fraser Island and K'gari are two names given to the same place. The world's largest sand island, which lies off the coast of Queensland, Australia, is a spectacular destination . With magnificent rainforests , stunning perched lakes with soft white sand, and ancient sand dunes , this island is a World Heritage Site and a haven for adventurers.

This article will discuss the names of K'gari! The traditional name of the island is K'gari, but it was changed to Fraser Island by European colonists in the 1800s. In 2021, it was changed back to K'gari, and now many people refer to the island as K'gari (Fraser Island). Let's dive into the history of K'gari's names!

K'gari Coastline

K'gari: The Island's Traditional Name

Though most people in the modern age know the world's largest sand island as Fraser Island, K'gari is the traditional name . The Traditional Owners of the land are the Butchella People, and they named the island K'gari thousands of years ago. K’gari means ‘paradise’ in the native tongue.

The name K'gari is derived from an Aboriginal Dreamtime story about a goddess named K'gari who fell in love with the earth and never wanted to leave. According to the story, the gods set out to find a place for the newly-created human race to live. K’gari, alongside Yendingie, the messenger of the great god Beeral, were sent down to earth to find such a place. But K’gari herself fell so in love with Earth that she never wanted to leave. She then transformed into the great sand island so that she could stay on her beloved Earth forever. Beeral placed lakes, forests, flowers, animals, birds, and people there to keep her company.

forests

K'gari's Butchella People

Such Dreamtime stories are an important part of the history of the Butchulla People and the land of K'gari. Stories are passed down for generations and record the history and beliefs of the people to preserve their memory. The Dreamtime is a way for the Butchulla People to understand the creation of the world and its meaning. It is also a way for us to understand the meaning and significance of places and animals in Australia, including the great sand island of K'gari.

The Butchulla people have lived on K’gari for at least 5,000 years but studies show it could be as much as 50,000 years. They have been an integral part of the island's history and past, and are still the traditional owners of the island. K’gari is their homeland and has special spiritual significance to their traditions and customs. Different parts of the island have different functions and provide them with places to carry out their traditional way of living.

Colonization of K'gari

The lives of the Butchulla people on K’gari changed hundreds of years ago when Europeans began to colonize Australia. The first official sighting of K'gari (Fraser Island) and its people was in 1770 when explorer James Cook (later known as the famous Captain Cook) sailed by. He noticed people standing on what he named "Indian Head", which is now called Indian Head Lookout .

This began a series of events that changed the face of the island and its people forever. Contact with the island people didn’t happen until later when Matthew Flinders landed on the northern edge of the island around 1799, talking with them in a series of peaceful meetings. For a time, the island was known as Great Sandy Island but was later named Fraser Island.

Indian Head Lookout

Where Does The Name "Fraser Island" Come From?

K'gari got its modern name, Fraser Island, during the European colonization period of the 1800s.  The name comes from the English Fraser family, particularly a woman named Eliza Fraser. Eliza Fraser was shipwrecked on the island in 1836. She was accompanying her husband on a voyage from Sydney to Singapore when they hit coral and had to abandon their ship.

Resorting to their lifeboats, their journey became more and more perilous until only Eliza Fraser was left, wrecked on the shores of what we now know as Fraser Island. The story goes that she spent several weeks on the island amongst the aboriginal people until she was rescued and returned to her native land in England. Her story of survival inspired the island to be renamed Fraser Island.

K'gari scenery

Returning to the Traditional Name

Between the years of 2021 and 2023, Fraser Island was officially renamed back to K'gari. The name "Fraser Island" was controversial for a few reasons. First of all, it disregarded the connection of the Traditional Owners to their land. The Butchella People thrived on K'gari for thousands of years, and they are the rightful owners of the land. It is only fair that the island remains with its traditional name.

Secondly, Eliza Fraser is partly responsible for the displacement and near extinction of the indigenous Australians on K'gari. Her stories about her time on the island show the locals in a negative light. She makes it seem like they captured her and mistreated her, and this led to the dispossession of the Butchella People from their beloved island. Rather than honor a woman whose narrative had tragic outcomes, the island was renamed K'gari to celebrate and acknowledge the Aboriginal paradise .

So many highlights on our 2 day Fraser Island tour from Rainbow Beach.

The local Butchulla custodians call Fraser Island “K’gari”, which means paradise. And paradise it is!

One of the best spots on Fraser Island is Lake McKenzie, the most famous of all of the Fraser Island attractions, notable for its size, its crystal clear freshwater, the surrounding pure white sand. The water is a stunning vivid blue, and the pure-silica sand is soft underfoot. The sand is so fine it is ideal for skin exfoliation. Grab a handful and give yourself a little spa treatment. The water is slightly acidic from decaying plants this limits the viability of aquatic life but in no way affects the pleasure of a well-earned swim.

Join us on this 2 days guided tour of Fraser Island to enjoy the highlights of 75 Mile Beach, Maheno Shipwreck, Indian Head, Eli Creek and Lake McKenzie in a large and comfortable 4WD vehicle.

From the Abbotsford Airshow to the Vancouver Mural Festival, 9 Lower Mainland events to check out this weekend

A street party at the City Centre Artist Lodge during a previous year's Vancouver Mural Festival is seen in this photo from the festival's website. (vanmuralfest.ca)

Festivals abound in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley this weekend. Here are some events to check out.

Vancouver Mural Festival

Founded in 2016, the Vancouver Mural Festival says it has grown into a "year-round, world-class, multi-media art consultancy and production agency," but its roots are still in its namesake festival, which began Wednesday and will feature events across the city through Sunday.

A focal point of this year's festival is the Mount Pleasant Street Party , happening daily at the City Centre Artist Lodge and surrounding streets and parking lots Thursday through Sunday. The free event features live art and music across multiple stages, food trucks, vendors and both licensed and alcohol-free bars.

The full list of new 2024 murals, along with a map, a schedule of events, artist bios and more, can be found on the festival website .

African Descent Festival

This weekend also marks the return of the African Descent Festival, which will take place Saturday and Sunday at English Bay Beach.

The two-day celebration of music, art and culture is intended to showcase the "diversity of people of African descent within Vancouver, while recognizing and promoting attitudes of oneness among all ethnic groups and communities," according to organizers .

Admission is free and donations are encouraged. Performances run from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily.

ThinkNDN Music Festival

The producers of ThinkNDN , a weekly show on Vancouver Co-op Radio, are inviting the public to Grandview Park in East Vancouver on Saturday for "a day of Indigenous musical talents, friends and fun."

The free event runs from noon to 8 p.m. More information can be found on the event listing on Facebook .

Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival

Head to Burnaby's Deer Lake Park on Saturday for the annual Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival.

This year's lineup features legendary American singer Mavis Staples, indie rock band Calexico, Canadian Indigenous singer-songwriter Crystal Shawanda and more.

The free event runs from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m., and food and drink will be available for purchase at the festival grounds. More information can be found on the City of Burnaby website .

B.C. Dumpling Festival

A celebration of all types of food wrapped in dough is returning to Coquitlam's Town Centre Park on Saturday.

The third edition of the B.C. Dumpling Festival promises food trucks, vendors, live performances, a dumpling-eating contest and more.

Admission is free and the event runs from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Richmond Sunflower Festival

Richmond Country Farm is hosting the Richmond Sunflower Festival this month. The event began on Thursday and runs through the end of the month.

More than 90 varieties of sunflowers, dahlias and other flowers have been planted across 20 acres for visitors to enjoy between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends and from noon to 7 p.m. on weekdays.

The Ride for Lung Health

The B.C. Lung Foundation's 2024 Ride for Lung Health is taking place Saturday in Delta, South Surrey and White Rock.

The 100-kilometre and 50-kilometre fundraising rides benefit the foundation and Carter's Project, a special initiative dedicated to honouring the memory of Carter Vigh, a nine-year-old boy who died of an asthma attack believed to be exacerbated by wildfire smoke last year.

The fundraising event also includes a free " ride festival " from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Tsawwassen Mills, featuring "Zero Gravity bike stunt shows," food trucks and a beer garden.

Fraser Valley festivals

Possibly the largest event of the weekend is happening outside Metro Vancouver proper. Thousands of people are expected to descend on Abbotsford International Airport Friday through Sunday for the annual Abbotsford International Airshow .

For more than 60 years, the airshow has been dazzling onlookers with military and civilian aerial performances, plus ground-based activities celebrating aviation and its history. More information on this year's festival can be found on the airshow's website.

A little farther east, an even older community event is taking place from Friday to Sunday at Chilliwack Heritage Park.

The Chilliwack Fair is the second-oldest continuously running agricultural fair in B.C., and this year's event is the 152nd edition.
