Super Rare Starfield NPC Gives Hope To A Much-Needed Feature In Shattered Space

10 best open-world games, june nintendo direct date may have been revealed via leaked among us update trailer.

Blasphemous  takes players across a harrowing adventure across Cvstodia and figuring out all the routes can be dizzying. Luckily, there are fast travel points that can be utilized and this guide will explain how to find them.

Developed by The Game Kitchen and released on September 10, 2019, Blasphemous  is a gothic tale about a lone warrior tasked on lifting a curse known simply as "The Miracle". Players play as a silent character called "The Pentinet One" who is a survivor of an epic massacre that's called "The Silent Sorrow". With heavy religious undertones, Blasphemous  is a Metroidvania style adventure, with a hint of Dark Souls. It encourages players to poke around, explore, and experiment with the various collectibles that are strewn across Cvstodia. Sporting dark, medieval, and vaguely romanesque armor, 'The Pentient One' is only armed with a simple sword and shield. Being a hack and slash game, players start with simple sword attacks and platforming mechanics as they fight various monsters. As the game progresses, players can upgrade attacks and defensive maneuvers for 'The Pentient One' to help work around a myriad of harrowing situations.

On top of that, Blasphemous  comes with light RPG mechanics to where players can add beads to 'The Pentient One's' rosary that grants special boosts. The health bar, although small, can be increased with the accumulation of XP and even refilled while on the move with 'Biliary Flasks'. This world is teeming with secrets and even some enigmas to unravel. Thus, there are also certain checkpoints peppered through the game's map that enables players to; refill their flask, upgrade their skills, buy items, and unlock new routes. This game can be dense and unforgiving at times. Running across Cvstodia and battling all the evil that lurks within can be stressful, especially with all the pitfalls and 'instant death' spike pits. Therefore, this game does indeed have fast travel points that players can use. This can be a handy tool in regards to bypassing all the turmoil that awaits players and also save some time.

How To Fast Travel in Blasphemous

The way fast travel works in Blasphemous  is that players will need to find rooms that have special portals that will need to be activated. They are known as "The Gates of Travel". According to the illustration above, this is how they look and players will need to simply stand in front of them and push the 'interact button' to walk through them. Now, it's important to keep in mind that players can't travel wherever they want. Instead, there are certain key points placed strategically through Cvstodia that basically cuts the journey in half. The following is where players can find the Gates of Travel throughout the map.

Fast Travel Points in Cvstodia:

  • Library of the Negated Words
  • Archcatherdral Rooftops
  • Mercy Dreams
  • Brotherhood of The Silent Sorrow

Obviously, whenever a player fast travels, all the enemies in the new area would have respawned. So, just be sure that's everything is in order before jumping ahead. In most cases, players will find their first fast travel point in the 'Mercy Dreams' area. Walking through this portal will take players back to Albero. If players were lucky enough to unlock alternate paths, then going back to Mercy Dreams (or wherever else) shouldn't be that much of a problem.

How to Fast Travel in Blasphemous 2

Getting around in Blasphemous 2 is one of the most important mechanics you can learn in the game. Due to the nature of this type of game you will need to backtrack regularly to unlock new locations, items, and secrets. While much backtracking is required, players can alleviate travel time by learning the game’s different fast travel systems. Below I walk you through those systems in this how to fast travel in Blasphemous 2 guide.

Use the Mirabras of the Return to Port Chant

Image showing the Mirabras of the Return to Port Prayer location in the Profuno Lamento area of Blasphemous 2.

One of the first Prayers the player can find in Blasphemous 2 is the Mirabras of the Return to Port . This Chant is located in the Profundo Lamento location in the room to the left of the elevator that leads down to the Sea of Ink location.

The reason you will use this spell is that it allows for players to fast travel back to the City of the Blessed Name . When you cast this spell outside of the City of the Blessed Name the Penitent One fast travels back to the Prie Dieu outside of the artisan’s shop.

Use Fast Travel Gates

As you explore Cvstodia you will encounter large portals in their own rooms. These portals can be used to fast trave l to other gates you’ve previously discovered. This is the major drawback for this system. You have to have found a gate to travel back to it. This makes this fast travel option only good for getting to areas you’ve explored previously.

Unlock Prie Dieu Functions Through the Cobijada Side Quest

Image showing the Blasphemous 2 Cobijida all found.

One of the best kept secrets in the game is the Cobijada side quest . This side quest tasks you with finding nine sisters that are stranded in Cvstodia behind hidden corners . The Mayor Cobijada , who you can meet in the City of the Blessed Name, asks you to find them for her. Each time you find two of this sisters she unlocks a Tribute reward for you. Two of those rewards unlock fast travel a Prie Dieus:

  • 2x Cobijada found unlocks fast travel back to the City at any Prie Dieu.
  • 6x Cobijada found unlocks fast travel between Prie Dieus.

Both of these are fairly useful abilities to have unlocked at the Prie Dieu. The second unlock in particular makes fast travelling around the map much quicker because there are many Prie Dieus.

How to fast travel in Blasphemous 2?

Blasphemous 2 features three fast travel options

Blasphemous 2 features a couple of fast travel options but you won't have access to all of the right from the get-go.

Fast travel is a game mechanic in Blasphemous 2 , even though you won't realise that until you've played for a couple of hours. Blasphemous 2 has a couple of fast travel options that you will unlock as you progress.

Obviously, the best and most efficient one is unlocked later in the game, but until then, you'll have some solid options for fast travelling so you don't waste your time running from one part of the map to another.

In this guide, we'll explain all fast travel options and how to start using these helpful tools.

Blasphemous 2 - How to upgrade your health in Blasphemous 2?

Blasphemous 2 fast travel explained.

You won't get to fast travel in a traditional fashion right from the get-go. In the beginning, the game will allow you to travel back to the main hub area by giving you a useful Chant that can be activated at any location. The Chant is called Mirabras of the Return to Port and can be found on a cliff in Profundo Lamento , just left of the elevator that takes you down to the Sea of Ink.

The second way of fast travelling in Blasphemous 2 is to find "hand portals" all over Cvstodia. As you unlock these portals, you will be able to travel between them. The portals can be found in pretty much all big zones on the map.

fast travel blasphemous

The third, and the most efficient way of fast travelling in Blasphemous 2 is to travel between Prie Dieus. However, you'll have to upgrade your Prie Dieu to get access to fast travel and to upgrade your Prie Dieu you must collect all Cobijadas. The guide for that is below.

Blasphemous 2 Hide and Seek trophy guide: All sisters (Cobijadas) locations

And that's pretty much it. That's how you can fast-travel in Blasphemous 2. While it can be a bit annoying that you don't have the third option right from the get go, the spell and the portals do come in handy so you won't waste a lot of time running from one place to another.

5. Blasphemous Story Walkthrough Part 3: Cleaning Up to 100%

The entire world is now open to you. This page of the walkthrough will guide you through the remaining quests and collectibles. If you haven't yet, fast travel to Albero and donate to the church until you can teleport between Prie Dieux.

Mother of Mothers

Fast travel to Library of the Negated Words and go up into Mother of Mothers. Climb the ladders to the room above and jump over the gaps to reach the church room with Cleofas and the Lady of Perpetual Suffering. Offer each of the three Marks of Refuge to the Lady (making sure not to end her suffering), and she will be transported away. Speak to Cleofas again and he will express uncertainty about his future.

If you want to attempt the save-deleting shortcut for the Crossing Souls achievement, skip the next step--speaking to Ludovico--and go directly to Archcathedral Rooftops.

Travel to Albero and speak to Ludovico at the church. He will give you the Cord of the True Burying to give to Cleofas. Then travel back to to the entry of Archcathedral Rooftops, above the left edge of Mother of Mothers, and go left from the Prie Dieu. You will see Cleofas standing at the precipice.

This is the point of no return to get or avoid the Crossing Souls achievement. If you are a veteran achievement hunter, you may have done the following process before. If you have not, read the following closely.

  • Go to your Xbox One's Settings app, and under General > Network settings, select "Go offline".
  • Press B until you return to the game.
  • Speak to Cleofas, then leave the room and re-enter it. You will hear Cleofas fall to his death.
  • Equip the Linen of Golden Thread and jump off after him. (This just saves traveling time.) You will land next to his body in Patio of the Silent Steps.
  • Redento will also be there. Speak to him to earn the achievement. (The achievement may not actually unlock until you reconnect and view the game achievements.)
  • Quit the Blasphemous game from the system menu.
  • Press Menu on the Blasphemous game tile and select Manage game & add-ons.
  • In the game's Manage page, go to Saved Data.
  • Press Menu on the save file for your account, and delete the saved data. Confirm to delete from your console (since you are offline, the data will remain in the cloud for you to download again soon).
  • Return to the Network Settings page and reconnect to Xbox Live.
  • Restart the Blasphemous game.
  • Before the main menu, your console will sync your game data from Xbox Live.

Reload your game, and you will only have lost a little progress. But you will have avoided most of an additional playthrough. Now complete the quest steps you skipped before: Speak to Redento in Patio of the Silent Steps, meet him in Mother of Mothers, and collect the Nail Uprooted from Dirt. Speak to Ludovico to get the Cord of the True Burying to give to Cleofas.

With Cord of the True Burying in your possession, speak to Cleofas on the precipice and he will decide to go back to the church in Albero. When you speak to him there next, he will give you Tiento to Your Thorned Hairs (a Prayer) . You will also earn

Help Cleofas on his path of redemption

Rebirth

Next is a comprehensive trip around the map to get all collectibles you have missed.

Spending and Farming Tears

It takes a lot of Tears to purchase all of the upgrades. You likely won't be able to afford them all without farming; especially if you skip enemies or fast travel frequently. At this point in your playthrough, you may have close to the 20,000 Tears needed to unlock fast travel via Prie Dieu. When you can afford it, enter the church in Albero and tithe up to a total of 20,000 Tears. Note that it is the total amount donated in the playthrough, not 20K at once. You'll know it is unlocked when the Prie Dieu has the same open palm hand design in it as the fast travel portals.

When you do need to farm Tears of Atonement, here is the fastest way I've found to do it:

  • Travel to the Prie Dieu underneath the elevator in Archcathedral Rooftops. The room to the left is where you pick up a Sword Heart, and it has two caged gargoyles in it.
  • Equip Cante Jondo of the Three Sisters, Heart of the Holy Purge, Fire Enclosed in Enamel, and Drop of Coagulated Ink.
  • Make a loop of entering the room, using your prayer to kill the two enemies, and returning to the Prie Dieu. Each repetition will give you 600 Tears.

This is not super fast, but it is quicker than farming enemies anywhere else.

Convent of Our Lady of the Charred Visage

Make your way down to the entrance Prie Dieu, and take the lower left door in this chamber. You'll be in a long room full of poison gas and enemies. Fight your way to the end and collect Heart of Saltpeter Blood (a Sword Heart) . Then backtrack to the main entrance of the convent and begin descending the mountain.

Graveyard of the Peaks

At the bottom of the topmost tall chamber, take the right exit. You'll see blood platforms immediately; use them and a bramble wall (jump with the wind!) to reach Tentudia's Skeletal Remains . From up here you will also see a doorway to the right. To get there from the door from which you entered this room, jump from the first blood platform to the second and then to the right, throwing a projectile in midair to delay your fall long enough for a bramble beam to appear under you. Climb to the door and find Bead of Gold Thread (a Rosary Bead*) on the other side.

Return to the previous room, remove the Tongues relic, and drop down to land on platforms with Occipital of Tequila, the Blacksmith (a Bone) and Empty Bile Vessel #8/8 . Jump with the wind back over the gap and exit left, and in this room you'll see a cherub floating high overhead. You couldn't reach it before, but now equip Taranto to My Sister and free Cherub #32/38 . From here, fall safely (with Linen equipped) to the bottom of the mountain. Go left past the elevator to the Confessor Shrine there. Destroy the shrine and equip the bead Weight of True Guilt (if your Immaculate Bead has fully transformed by now), and you can enter the challenge arena.

Challenge Arena - Graveyard of the Peaks

This arena has a spike pit in the center. Keep your distance from it and you'll be fine.

  • Round 1: Rock Throwers, 2x Flagellator
  • Round 2: 2x Flagellator, 2x Pot Woman
  • Round 3: 2x Bell specter, 2x Angel bearer
  • Round 4: 4x Jumper, Flamespouter
  • Round 5: Zap ghost, 2x Censer nun

Reward: 1000 Tears

Where Olive Trees Wither

If you missed saving Gemino and therefore don't have The Desire of the Corrupted yet, now is your chance to get it. With the Linen equipped, go to the room west of Gemino's tree and drop into the pit. Go all the way to the left and you'll find a room with a stone woman. This is the tomb of the Lady of the Tailed Gown. You can tell because you will immediately earn

Visit the tomb of The Lady of the Tailed Gown.

The Desire of the Corrupted

Interact with the tomb and place the Dried Flowers Bathed in Tears to receive Saeta Dolorosa (a Prayer) . Now exit to the right, and climb to the top level of this room. You can free Cherub #15/38 with your blood projectile, and at the right side you can pick up Coxxyx of Daniel, the Possessed (a Bone) before dropping down and exiting via the right-side wall.

Go towards a missing spot on your map. In the room to your right, follow the top platforms and a bramble beam will lead you to Cherub #33/38 and a passage to the right. This room is full of bell specters and leads to Heart of Cerulean Incense (a Sword Heart) . Return to the previous room, and jump down onto a platform with a tree and Talking Corpse #23/26 .

Mercy Dreams

Challenge arena - mercy dreams.

This arena has a platform on each side. Use lunges to clear out the enemies on the bottom.

  • Round 1: 4x Knife pilgrim, 2x Wheelbearer, 2x Specter
  • Round 2: 2x Candelabra priest, Specter
  • Round 3: 2x Rock thrower, 2x Angel bearer
  • Round 4: 2x Flagellator, Shield man, Specter
  • Round 5: 6x Specter

Reward: Heart of the Single Tone (a Sword Heart)

If Candelaria still has any items, continue down and buy them. Otherwise, return up to Wasteland of the Buried Churches.

Wasteland of the Buried Churches

Go left until you have an opportunity to drop through the bottom of the screen. You will land in Desecrated Cistern.

Desecrated Cistern

You will land near a gold chest. Open it to get Zambra to the Resplendent Crown (a Prayer) and free Cherub #34/38 . Equip Nail Uprooted from Dirt, and backtrack down to the blood fountain and the talking corpse outside of it. Slide under the wall and jump up to retrieve Severed Hand .

Next, go back towards the lower-right area of the zone. You'll see a door on your map you haven't gone through, on the left side of the large room adjacent to the Prie Dieu hallway. This new room is a long hallway full of poison gas; you can't get to the other end without both the Nail and Lung relics. At the left side of the hallway, pull a switch to open a shortcut both up and across. On the far side, free Cherub #35/38 behind the pillar to the left before descending the ladder.

Go down in this chamber; explore to the right and you'll be in a room with Hyoid Bone of Senex, the Beggar (a Bone) . Then go left, and you will pass through a room with two corpses and a door in the background. Listen to Talking Corpse #24/26 and Talking Corpse #25/26 for the clues on how to open the door. Inside is Silver Grape (a Rosary Bead) .

*** Spoiler - click to reveal *** Solution:

After speaking to the corpses, entering the room from one side with the Shroud equipped will increase the number displayed on the tiles on that side. Make the left side read IV ("all depart") and the right side read II ("half return") and the door will open.

Continuing left from there, you will be in the elevator shaft. Break the lock and cross the gap using the bramble beams. Use Taranto to My Sister to free Cherub #36/38 and enter the far room. You can pick up the Chalice of Inverted Verses here. You must fill the chalice and replace it for the gate here to open. For now, just take the Chalice and worry about filling it later.

You must kill a spear-throwing minotaur from Mountains of the Endless Dusk, a lion-man from Wall of the Holy Prohibitions, and a large statue woman from The Sleeping Canvases, and return without dying.

Equip the Linen and jump down the elevator shaft against the right wall. You will land on a platform and be able to get Navicular of Kahnnyhoo, the Murderer (a Bone) . Then go left.

Grievance Ascends

Backtrack to the room with Altasgracias. You can now free Cherub #37/38 outside their room. Inside, they will be gone, and you can pick up Knot of Hair (a Rosary Bead) in their place.

Continue backtracking to the second chamber, and the Confessor Shrine at the top thereof.

Challenge Arena - Grievance Ascends

This arena has a pit of spikes on each side.

  • Round 1: 2x Flagellator, Minotaur
  • Round 2: Bell charger
  • Round 3: 2x Flagellator, 2x Boomeranger
  • Round 4: 2x Bell specter, Bell charger
  • Round 5: 2x Ghostly fencer, 2x Bell specter

Reward: 3000 Tears

Climb to the top of the zone. There are two pickups to get. One is on the left side; you will need to kill a bell charger to activate a lift, and then jump onto a bramble beam to pick up Pelican Effigy (a Rosary Bead) . The other is in the first room you ever entered in this zone. You will need to climb a bramble wall to reach a gold chest containing Solea of Excommunication (a Prayer) .

Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow

Stop at the Confessor Shrine above Soledad and complete the challenge arena here.

Challenge Arena - Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow

  • Round 1: 2x Flagellator, 2x Minotaur
  • Round 2: 2x Boomeranger, Bell charger
  • Round 3: 4x Wheelbearer, Specter
  • Round 4: 2x Angel bearer, 2x Floating chair man
  • Round 5: 3x Rock throwers, 2x Minotaur
  • Round 6: Puppet ogre

Reward: Embers of a Broken Star (a Rosary Bead)

Pick up Large Bead of Blue Wax (a Rosary Bead) on your way up.

Backtrack all the way to the first room of the game, and go to the left. You can climb blood platforms and a bramble wall to reach Talking Corpse #26/26 and Cherub #38/38 . This will unlock both

Discover the last words of the 26 original corpses.

Last Words

Release all cherubs.

The Bull and The Moon

If you are still missing a cherub or talking corpse, consult the appendix to determine which one(s) it might be.

The Holy Line

Shortly to the right of the Prie Dieu, you will see a section of ground that has rubble on it. Strike this with a downward thrust to open a secret tunnel leading to an ominous stone crypt. This area is related to the Stir of Dawn questline in New Game Plus, but you can still pick up Talking Corpse * and Quicksilver .

You can use blood platforms to cross to a platform holding the pickup for Painted Wood Bead (a Rosary Bead) . On the next screen you will see another section of ground you can break open with your sword. Down here is Clavicle of Dalhuisen, the Schoolchild (a Bone) to the left and Knot of Rosary Rope #5/6 in a silver chest to the right. You need the Blood and Nail relics to get this.

This should be the last bone you needed, so you will unlock

Get the 44 original collectibles.

Warden of the Ossuary

If you are still missing a bone, consult your inventory and the appendix to determine which one.

Kneel at the pool and offer the Severed Hand to the spirit there. He will give you Incorrupt Hand of the Fraternal Master . This is the third of three Relics he creates for you, unlocking

Bring all offerings to the Lord of the Salty Shores.

In the name of the High Wills

This is also the last of the seven Relics in the game, unlocking

Get the 7 original relics.

Skin and Bones

Speak to Tirso. He will thank you for your help, giving you Knot of Rosary Rope #6/6 and unlocking

Save all Kissers of Wounds.

Mediterranean Diet

Speak to Ludovico and offer Tentudia's Skeletal Remains. You will receive Debla of the Lights (a Prayer) . This will also net you

Bring all the offerings to Lvdovico.

True Shrine

The Sleeping Canvases

Fast travel to Mercy Dreams and go east to The Sleeping Canvases. Purchase what you can from Candelaria; if that's everything, you will earn

Buy all the items of the Candelaria shops.

Flea Market

From there, continue right. When you kill the Large Statue on the way, you'll notice that the Chalice of Inverted Verses has been partially filled.

Go all the way to the right and you'll be in a puzzle room, this one containing three large paintings on the back wall. Solve the puzzle and advance into the next room to pick up Molten Heart of Boiling Blood (a Sword Heart) .

*** Spoiler - click to reveal *** To open the door, equip both Big Bead of Blue Wax and Big Bead of Red Wax, then hold B to generate fervour.

This is also the last Sword Heart, so you will earn

Get the 9 original sword hearts.

Heartbreaker

Retrace your steps back to the room with the giant bull painting, and pray before it. Now that you've found all of the Cherubs, Jocinero will give you Campanillero to the Sons of the Aurora (a Prayer) .

Library of the Negated Words

Retrace your steps in Library of the Negated Words to the Confessor Shrine, and complete the challenge arena there.

Challenge Arena - Library of the Negated Words

This arena has gold mannequins and a swinging scythe.

  • Round 1: 2x Flagellator, Lounging head man
  • Round 2: 2x Lounging head man, Statue man
  • Round 3: 4x Flagellator, Lounging head man
  • Round 4: 2x Librarian, Specter
  • Round 5: 2x Librarian, 2x Statue man
  • Round 6: 2x Lounging head man, Blast ghost

Reward: 5000 Tears

Then continue retracing your path through the library until you find a puzzle room at the bottom of a chamber near the end. This room has three books. Solve the puzzle and continue to collect Romance to the Crimson Mist (a Prayer) .

Each book depicts a different bone: A femur, a tibia, and a kneecap. The collectible bones matching these tell you what you must do to open the door:

  • Unequip all items.
  • Fill your fervour bar.
  • Stand still for several seconds.

If this is the last of the 13 prayers you've collected, you will unlock

Get the 13 original prayers.

Unwavering devotion

If you are still missing a prayer, consult your inventory and the appendix to determine which one(s).

Challenge Arena - Mother of Mothers

This arena has swinging censers.

  • Round 1: 2x Flagellator, Pot woman
  • Round 2: 4x Blue jumper, Lantern priest
  • Round 3: 2x Lantern priest, Floating chair man
  • Round 4: 2x Bell charger
  • Round 5: 2x Glass rogue, 2x Floating chair man
  • Round 6: Fireball crawler with Caged gargoyle

Reward: Scaly Coin (a Rosary Bead)

Wall of the Holy Prohibitions

Alert: Remember, you must defeat the boss at least once before completing all challenge arenas to get the bad ending.

Make your way towards the Confessor Shrine on the west side of the zone. Make sure to stop in the central chamber and kill the lion-man here; this will fill the Chalice of Inverted Verses further.

Challenge Arena - Wall of the Holy Prohibitions

This arena has periodic poison gas passing through it.

  • Round 1: 2x Lantern priest
  • Round 2: 4x Prisoner
  • Round 3: 2x Gargoyle
  • Round 4: 2x Large statue
  • Round 5: 2x Prisoner, 2x Floating chair man
  • Round 6: Refuge knight

Reward: Seashell of the Inverted Spiral (a Rosary Bead)

Now that you have completed all of the challenge arenas, you will earn

Complete all the arena’s challenges.

Detestatio Sacrorum

This is likely also the last of the Rosary Beads for your collection, so you will unlock

Get the 30 original rosary beads.

Mysteria Lucis

If you are still missing a Rosary Bead, consult your inventory and the appendix to determine which one(s).

Mountains of the Endless Dusk

Travel to Mountains of the Endless Dusk and kill a minotaur. This will finish filling the Chalice of Inverted Verses.

If you die, exit the game, or fast travel using a hand portal, the Chalice of Inverted Verses will empty. You will have to kill each of the three enemies (Statue woman, Lion-man, Minotaur) again to fill it. You can teleport via Prie Dieu to shorten this process.

Return to the room where you found the chalice, to the left of the elevator shaft, and put the filled chalice back. This will open the gate here and grant you access to Mea Culpa Shrine #7/7 . You will now unlock

Achieve the maximum level of the sword Mea Culpa.

Mea Culpa

You can also open a shortcut back to Echoes of Salt, but you won't really need it.

Final Cleanup Before The Boss

If you've collected all of the Empty Bile Vessels, travel to any Blood Shrine. The closest one to a Prie Dieu is underneath the western Prie Dieu in Library of the Negated Words. Refill any remaining flasks, at costs up to 3000 Tears, and you will unlock

Achieve maximum flask capacity.

The Fountain of Life

Travel to Soledad in Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow and give her any remaining Knots of Rosary Rope. You will unlock

Achieve the maximum number of rosary bead slots.

Engracia

If you have missed an empty vessel or knot of rope, consult the appendix to help locate it.

Now travel back to the Archcathedral Rooftops and fight the remaining bosses:

Crisanta of the Wrapped Agony

As you may have eventually expected, this boss is a human with a moveset similar to your own, but much stronger and flashier. Also, she is able to speak. She has these moves:

  • She makes a large slash with her sword.
  • She makes a lunging slash with her sword.
  • She leaps high into the air and thrusts downward diagonally , sending up shockwaves when she lands.
  • She holds her sword in a guarding stance , blocking your strikes and counterattacking.

When she reaches 60% health, her sword will draw in power and release a shockwave. Following this, she has an additional move:

  • She disappears and makes three surprise zooming thrusts across the screen, either horizontally or diagonally. At lower health, the number of thrusts increases. On a diagonal thrust, you can jump and slash to hit her.

Crisanta's sword slashes can't really be avoided; her reach is too great. But they can be blocked. When she guards, you can strike, block her counterattack, and slide lunge for a relatively safe hit against her. Use Zarabanda of the Safe Haven at first to get her health down. When she begins zooming across the screen, she gets easier to kill because when she is done, she reappears and stands still for a second. She also seems to zooming thrust more often as she gets close to death. Most importantly, don't get frustrated. This is a difficult boss and even experienced gamers can expect to die once or several times.

His Holiness Escribar

This is only the first of two boss stages, and he doesn't have that much health for a boss. Escribar will appear on one side of the screen and make a random elemental attack.

  • Poison: Toxic spheres float towards you. They can be reflected with your sword.
  • Dark: Daggers alternating high and low shoot forwards.
  • Lightning: Delayed lightning bolts strike randomly.
  • Fire: Fireballs from the top of the screen shoot towards you.

To defeat Escribar efficiently, attack from a distance. Use a lunging strike when he appears, and then avoid his attacks. The second stage is much harder, so focus on not getting hit and reaching it with full health.

A sample of combat: https://i.imgur.com/cVKyHfX.gif

When Escribar's health is empty, you will get a bit of a monologue and the screen will transition to the second phase.

Last Son of the Miracle

Now this is a final boss. His Holiness appears as a monolithic armored sarcophagus in a blizzard, and the sword he carried before is also giant and flies around on its own.

  • The sword will wind up and make a large swing at you. You can dodge through this.
  • The sword will plunge into the ground and create a shockwave.

To defeat the Last Son of the Miracle, you must strike the eye in the flying sword until it is weakened; the faceplate in the statue will open and the weak point will be exposed for about 20 seconds. At the same time, you can only reach his face by jumping onto temporary ice platforms that are always randomly melting and appearing. While all of this is happening, elemental attacks will be spawned watch the diamond symbols to either side of the boss's head to see which element will come next:

  • Dark: Daggers emanate from the symbols in eight directions. Or, huge energy beams erupt from the ground.
  • Lightning: Lightning bolts strike at random. Or, a series of lightning bolts strikes one half of the screen.
  • Fire: Great quantities of fireballs shoot from the top of the screen towards you.

There's no shortcut to defeating this final boss. Get used to avoiding each type of attack, since you will need to navigate both them and the platforms. No prayer is especially effective, but you can cast Saeta Dolorosa when the face is exposed and get several hits in to heal yourself.

A sample of combat: https://i.imgur.com/8chyhUe.gif

This time, when you climb the mountain of ash in the next room, you can reach the chair at the top. Over the ending cutscene, you will unlock

Unlock ending A

The Path of the Believer

If you have all of the collectibles and 100% of the map in this save file, upon getting the good ending you will also unlock

Beat 100% of the game.

Witness of The Miracle

When you have done everything else, you will likely still need to farm Tears of Atonement to purchase all of the sword abilities. Repeatedly kill the caged gargoyles in the Rooftops to get whatever you need to purchase the final upgrade for 20,000 Tears and unlock

Unlock all the abilities on the Mea Culpa altars.

Blood and Tears

If you have all of the achievements, you will unlock

Get all achievements.

Blasphemous Guide – Beginners Tips & Tricks

Smite thy foes.

Blasphemous beginners guide

Metroidvanias are known for being tricky at times, and Souls-likes are especially  known for being challenging. Blasphemous combines the two into a gruelling combat platformer that does little to explain to the player how it works. This is a tough game which shows no mercy, but get the hang of its systems and its sprawling map and you’ll start to see the holy light at the end of the tunnel. Prepare for penance with our helpful beginners guide, full of tips and tricks to help you get started in the first few levels.

Where to go first

Where to go

Blasphemous’ level structure is very non-linear at the beginning of the game. You can go in multiple directions and face the first three bosses in any order. However, some levels and bosses are arguably more difficult than others, and better to tackle when you’re more used to the game and have built up more health, heals, equipment and abilities.

It’s recommended to begin with the more straightforward levels in the Suburbs. Then when you’ve defeated that boss, head north to the Enclosed Convent. Finally, explore the depths of The Bronze Frontier.

Explore all doors

fast travel blasphemous

Blasphemous is labyrinthine in its level design. Every time you enter a room with multiple exits, have a quick peek inside all of the doors to see where they lead before you start going down a rabbit hole. And don’t leave an area before checking out all of its passages – you might miss something good, and it’ll take time to backtrack there later. Thankfully, the in-game map is quite useful, so ensure you check it liberally to avoid leaving areas unexplored.

Look out for secrets

Blasphemous secret passages

The levels in Blasphemous are full of secrets. Wherever you go, try attacking all of the walls. Yeah, you’ll look like a crazy person, but there are a bunch of hidden passages which reveal themselves when struck. It’s really important to do this, because a surprising amount of good items and stat upgrades are hidden in these secret areas.

A less common type of secret area also worth looking out for is gaps in the walls you can slide through. Once you squeeze in, the secret room will reveal itself.

How to unlock new abilities

There are a variety of abilities to learn in Blasphemous which make you a more effective fighter, but unlocking them isn’t entirely straightforward. You can only do so at a Mea Culpa statue, and must spend Tears of Atonement to do so. You’ll also need to find and visit Mea Culpa statues to unlock new tiers of abilities, and these are rare. The first one is in Albero, and you can find another at the east side of the Convent of Our Lady of the Charred Visage.

How to avoid taking damage

parry and counterattack

If you’ve played any Souls-likes in the past, you’ll be familiar with two moves in Blasphemous important for avoiding damage: the dodge and parry. There are a few important differences in how they work, however.

Rather than a dodge roll, Blasphemous has more of a dodge slide . This actually lets you travel a lot of distance horizontally, which is both a blessing and a curse – good for getting out of the way of enemies, but all too easy to slide into another source of damage. Also, while it gives you the standard few frames of invincibility against most physical attacks, it does nothing to avoid magical damage, of which there is quite a lot in the game. Your only option there is to physically move out of the way.

The parry is another method of avoiding physical damage and getting the advantage. You have to time the parry just as an enemy starts to strike – the moment at which they hit you will be too late. You can then launch a powerful counter-attack, and a well-timed parry and counter can sometimes stun your opponent, leaving them open to a finisher.

Attack enemies from below

attacking from below

Enemies in Blasphemous are vicious and plentiful, often able to kill you in just a few hits. But it’s surprising how often you can get the advantage on your opponent by jumping and swiping up at the platform above you. You can kill loads of enemies this way in complete safety.

Watch out for exploding enemies…

The Desecrated Cistern is home to undead men that materialise from the ground. If you attack them they explode, causing a lot of damage – it can kill you in one hit. And they respawn afterwards. It’s best to just jump over them or dodge through them. If you can find the man ringing a bell in that room and kill him, it’ll stop them spawning.

…and enemies that come up from the ground

In the snowy Where Olive Trees wither, there are enemies that leap out of the ground and pack quite a punch if they hit you. Look out for any moving patches of snow, dodge them then attack while they’re briefly in the air.

How to get more heals

Blasphemous biliary vessels

To get more uses of Blasphemous’ Estus Flask equivalent, you need to find more empty biliary vessels. You can find an empty biliary vessel in the north-east of the Desecrated Cistern and one in the depths of Jondo, for instance. But it’s not sufficient to just pick one up – once you get one, you have to visit a blood fountain and pay to fill it for the first time. It’ll then automatically refill each time you visit a shrine.

How to increase max health

Increase max health

In addition to increasing your number of biliary vessels, you can also expand your health bar. You need to look for a woman with six swords embedded in her chest – so as above, make sure you explore each level thoroughly to avoid missing her. Each time you find her, she rips one of her swords out of her chest and hands it to you. For some bizarre reason, this expands your maximum health. Yeah, Blasphemous isn’t afraid to be weird.

A couple of locations that she can be found include towards the south-east exit of the Desecrated Cistern, and around where the Desecrated Cistern meets Grievance Ascends.

How to increase fervor

Increase fervor oil of the pilgrims

Fervor is the blue mana-like bar that lets you unleash abilities. You can increase this by finding baptism fonts, and it’ll ask you where to “Anoint yourself with theOil of the Pilgrims?”. You can find one of these to the West of the Desecrated Cistern, and another a fair way up the climb in Graveyard of the Peaks.

How to fast travel

Blasphemous fast travel

Blasphemous does have fast travel, but it takes a while to unlock, and unfortunately, fast travel points are few and far between. The first one you may find is on the east side of Mercy Dreams, and this will then unlock the one in Albero.

Should you get Viridiana’s help?

Will you require my assistance with your next task assent or dissent

A woman called Viridiana can be found shortly before each boss. “Will you require my assistance with your next task?” she asks. Viridiana can help you in boss fights with her magic powers. However, taking her up on her offer takes its toll on her. You may want to choose wisely whether you need the help or not…

Don’t forget about the water fountain in Albero

Albero water fountain

The village you start in, Albero, has a water fountain. For a while, you won’t be able to do anything with it. Return later in the game, however, and you’ll be able to bless certain items.

How to Fast Travel in Blasphemous

' src=

Here to know about fast traveling in Blasphemous? Don’t worry we got you.

Blasphemous: How can you Fast Travel

Can we fast travel in blasphemous.

Now before we even start this, the first question would be ‘Can we even fast travel in Blasphemous?’. The answer to this is, yes. We can fast travel in Blasphemous. Some people might get confused at the feature here doesn’t work like in other games.

How to Fast Travel in Blasphemous?

You can fast travel in Blasphemous but it is not available every time and everywhere. There are limited number of fast travel points and they are pretty far from each other. You will have to go ahead and unlock it.

The first fast travel point that you will encounter would be located on Mercy Dreams – East with the second one being in Albero. You unlock the first one and then go for the second. The main point of the game is not to be easy and having too many fast travel points would eliminate that concept.

That’s all, folks!

GameFAQs Q&A

Orthodox Christianity

Concerning the New and the Old Calendars

A presentation by archbishop seraphim (sobolev) of boguchar to the congress of moscow (8-18 july 1948).

St. Seraphim (Sobolev)

The following English translation of a theological work by the newly-canonized Saint Seraphim (Sobolev) of Boguchar was first published on the Website of the Diocese of Etna and Portland , an Old Calendar Greek jurisdiction. It is Archbishop Seraphim’s presentation at the July, 1948 Congress of Moscow, where the subject of ecumenism was discussed at length.

[Due to the length and complexity of the footnotes found in the original post, we have not reproduced them here. Footnoted places are marked with an asterisk. Please refer to the original for the footnotes, which in this text begin with number 18 in the original.—O.C.]

“Unfortunately,” he stated, " although they barely understood the details of the Alexandrian rule, and although they were probably far from understanding it as they should have, the Western Paschalists desired to reform this rule within a short time and arrogantly attempted to correct a superbly executed piece of work... If the period of the Renaissance had begun simultaneously in Western and Eastern Europe, if difficult circumstances had not stifled education almost to the vanishing point in the ancient Christian Churches of Byzantium,... if the Alexandrian traditions and the learning of the early centuries had not come to an end in the East, then it is doubtful whether Pope Gregory XIII could have accomplished what he did."

To these words of Predtechensky we should add that the emergence of the calendar reform of Pope Gregory XIII was caused not only by the fact that Western Paschalists had not assimilated, and lacked the requisite understanding of, the Alexandrian rule or method for calculating Pascha, and by the collapse of education in the East, but also, and chiefly, by the Westerners’ lack of faith in the Holy Church, and more precisely, their inability to believe that in her the Holy Spirit lives and breathes as the fount of all Truth.

If the Roman Catholic Church had possessed this faith, then she would not, in the person of her Popes and her expert Paschalists, have undertaken to alter the Canons on which the Paschal reckoning of the Old Calendar is based, whereby the Holy Spirit expressed a truth, which is not subject to alteration. We have in mind primarily the Seventh Apostolic Canon:

If any Bishop, Presbyter, or Deacon, shall celebrate the holy day of Pascha before the vernal equinox, along with the Jews, let him be deposed.

This injunction is mentioned also in the First Canon of the Synod of Antioch:

All those who dare to set aside the decree of the Holy and Great Synod which was assembled at Nicæa in the presence of the Emperor Constantine, beloved of God, concerning the holy and saving Feast of Pascha ; if they shall contentiously persist in opposing what was then rightly ordained, let them be excommunicated and cast out of the Church (let this be said with regard to the laity). But if any one of those who preside in the Church, whether he be Bishop, Presbyter, or Deacon, should dare, in the wake of this decree, to exercise his own private judgment to the subversion of the people and to the disturbance of the Churches, by observing Pascha along with the Jews, the Holy Synod decrees that he shall thenceforth already be an alien from the Church, as one who not only brings sins upon himself, but who is also the cause of destruction and subversion to many; and it deposes not only such persons themselves from their ministry, but those also who after their deposition dare to commune with them. And the deposed shall be deprived even of that external honor, of which the Holy Canon and God’s Priesthood partake.

The foregoing Canon of the Synod of Antioch strikes us as particularly noteworthy, because it not onlyprohibits the simultaneous celebration of Pascha with the Jews, but also proves that such a prohibition was recorded in the Decree of the First Œcumenical Synod. To be sure, this synodal Decree has not come down to us, but a well-known epistle of the Emperor Constantine the Great to all of the Bishops who were not present at the Œcumenical Synod of Nicæa, refers to its content. *

Let us cite the substance of the Nicene Decree, as set forth in the interpretation of the First Canon of the Synod in Antioch by Bishop Nikodim (Milaš), an interpreter of the Sacred Canons who is recog- nized by the entire Church: *

The Synod in Nicæa occupied itself with the examination of this issue (the time for the celebration of Pascha) for the purpose, by means of a common decision, of averting all discord that might arise from this matter, and of restoring harmony to the whole Church. First and foremost, on the basis of the Seventh Apostolic Canon and of the Scriptural teaching about the seventh day, the Fathers of the Synod decided on the following points: (1) the Christian Pascha should always be celebrated on a Sunday, (2) this Sunday should be after the first full moon following the spring equinox, and (3) if it should happen that the Jewish Passover was to be celebrated on this Sunday, then the Christian Pascha should be transferred to the Sunday immediately following. *

To all of these canonical prescriptions of the Orthodox Church we should add also the Seventh Canon of the Second Œcumenical Synod and the analogous Ninety-fifth Canon of the Synod in Trullo (Penthekte), which decreed how heretics were to be received into the Church:

Those who from the heretics join themselves to Orthodoxy and to the portion of those who are being saved, we receive according to the following order and custom. Arians, Macedonians, Sabbatians, Novatians, Tessareskaidekatitai [Quartodecimans], or Tetraditai, and Apollinarians, we receive on their presentation of statements of faith and on their anathematizing every heresy which does not hold as does the Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church of God; and first of all, we anoint them with holy Chrism on their forehead, eyes, nostrils, mouth, and ears, and, as we seal them, we say: “The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit.”

As we see here, the Quartodecimans, i.e., Christians who celebrated Pascha together with the Jews on the 14th of Nisan, are clearly called heretics and are placed in the same category as the Arians and other major heretics, and for this reason, in the event of their repentance, they are to be received into the bosom of the Church through Chrismation (re-Chrismation). *

See where violation of the Canons regarding the time for celebrating Pascha leads. From the aforementioned canonical prescriptions of the Orthodox Church it is clear that we must uphold them reverently, without any alteration. For this reason, the Twenty-first Canon of the Synod in Gangra says:

We wish that all things which have been handed down by the Divine Scriptures and the Apostolic Traditions be observed in the Church.

And the Second Canon of the Sixth Œcumenical Synod:

That no one be allowed to falsify or set aside the aforementioned Canons [of the Apostles, of the Œcumenical and Local Synods, and of the Holy Fathers], or to accept any Canons other than those herein specified, which have been composed under a spurious inscription by certain persons who have attempted to traffic in the truth.

Such a steadfast and undeviating upholding of the Canons is demanded by the Seventh Œcumenical Synod, the First Canon of which states:

We gladly embrace the Divine Canons and hold fast all the precepts of the same, complete and without change, whether they have been set forth by those clarions of the Spirit, the all-laudable Apostles, or by the Six Œcumenical Synods, or by Synods locally assembled for promulgating such decrees, or by our Holy Fathers; for all these, being illumined by the same Spirit, ordained such things as were expedient; and those whom they placed under anathema, we likewise anathematize; those whom they deposed, we also depose; those whom they excommunicated, we also excommunicate...

From all of the aforementioned canonical prescriptions it is evident to what a great sin the Roman Catholics fell when they overturned the Sacred Canons, which forbid us to celebrate Pascha along with the Jews. This is the sin of blasphemy against the Holy Spirit, which God does not forgive, either in the present life or in the life to come. For, the same Holy Spirit, God, speaks through the Sacred Canons, because the canonical, as well as the dogmatic, prescriptions of the Œcumenical Synods were composed in accordance with the words of Divine Scripture: “It seemed pleasing to the Holy Spirit and to us.” *

And the Divine Spirit, through the Apostles, the Œcumenical Synods, and the Holy Fathers, did not ordain canonical truths in order that we might subsequently correct and alter them, as being, supposedly, imperfect and erroneous. Such an attitude towards the Sacred Canons is completely unacceptable and blasphemous.

Thus, the Roman Catholic Church is guilty of directly violating and annulling the Sacred Canons by celebrating Pascha in 1805, 1825,

1903, 1923, 1927, and in many other years simultaneously with the Jewish Passover.*

And, worse still, the New (Gregorian) Calendar decrees that the Roman Catholic Church be at odds with the Holy Gospel through its distortion of the Gospel account. It is clear from the Gospel that the Christian Pascha took place after the Jewish Passover.

But the Papists, with their new rules for determining Pascha, not only regularly celebrate their Pascha along with the Jews, but frequently before them, as happened in 1845, 1853, 1856, 1891, 1894, and in many other years. * In 1921, the Hebrew Passover fell on 10 April, while the Papists celebrated Pascha on 14 March, i.e., almost a month before the Passover! *

But if, on the basis of the Sacred Canons, it is impossible for us to accept the New Calendar in its entirety, then by the same token it is impossible for us Orthodox Christians to accept the New Calendar in the form of a compromise. *

This compromise has been discernible of late in the life of certain Orthodox Churches and consists in the fact that Pascha is celebrated according to the old Orthodox Paschalion, whereas all of the fixed Feasts are celebrated according to the New Calendar. But such a mixed calendar cannot possibly be accepted by the Orthodox, because it simultaneously gives rise to violations of other ecclesiastical ordinances, too, which are found in the Typikon and which we ought to observe religiously and steadfastly, since we should not deviate from obedience to our Mother, the Church.

The same thing happens with the Feast of the Annunciation (25 March). According to the instructions in the Typikon , the Annunciation is celebrated during the period between the Thursday of the Third Week of the Fast and the Wednesday of Bright Week .* But with the introduction of the New Calendar, the period during which the Annunciation can be celebrated begins on the Friday of the First Week of the Fast and extends only as far as the Thursday of the Sixth Week of the Fast.

But the sin of the New Calendarists with regard to the demands of the Church and her Typikon does not stop at this. Their negative attitude towards the appointed limits for the celebration of the great Feasts leads them into a yet graver violation of the Typikon .

The Church foresaw the coincidence of certain of the great Feasts with movable Feasts or with various days in Great Lent. In all of these instances, she has decreed a precise liturgical order. But in violating the appointed limits, the New Calendarists also wreak havoc with the liturgical order of the Orthodox Church.

For this reason, the New Calendarists cannot ever celebrate the Annunciation during Great Week and, by the same token, they can never celebrate “ Kyriopascha ,” that is, the coincidence of the Annunciation with Pascha, and in this way they clearly violate the Typikon .

A particularly shocking transgression of the Typikon by the New Calendarists is to be observed in connection with the Feast of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul . The Holy Church honors these great Apostles to such an extent that she prepares for their Feast (29 June) with a fast lasting from eight to forty-two days. But with the introduction of the New Calendar, this Fast, contrary to the Typikon , is always abbreviated. And when Pascha is celebrated during the period from 20-25 April, then the Apostles’ Fast is completely abolished, because there is no time left over for it! *

One could say that this violation of the Typikon does not constitute a serious sin, because it does not involve any violation of dogma. But the words of Christ, “If he neglect to hear the Church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican,” * do not refer to the violation of one or another dogmatic truth of our Faith. And yet, according to the testimony of these Divine words themselves, anyone of us who does not show obedience to the Church is to be cut off from her and enters into the ranks of great sinners, because in the case in question the severest punishment is imposed: excision from the Church. Furthermore, through their contempt for her Typikon , the New Calendarists commit the sin of disobedience to the Church publicly and brazenly.

From the standpoint of the Orthodox Faith, such a contemptuous attitude towards the Typikon is not permissible for the children of the Holy Church, just as any violation of her dogmatic or canonical ordinances is impermissible. And this is quite understandable.

Just as contempt for dogmatic or canonical ordinances leads to alienation from Orthodoxy, so contempt for the Typikon also leads to such alienation. In truth, the Typikon constitutes, for us, a sacred law, which gives us guidance in our God-pleasing services, Feasts, and Fasts. The Typikon is a sacred book, connected with the name of an outstanding vessel of Grace, St. Savvas the Sanctified , and it became accepted by the Orthodox Church as one of her basic books. The Typikon is nothing other than the voice of our Mother, the Church.* And we must not maintain an attitude of contempt towards this voice, but, rather, unhesitating and unshakable obedience, if we wish to be faithful and dedicated to the Holy Church and to all of her Orthodox Canons.

What do we gain as a result of violating this sacred book through the introduction of the New Calendar? If we use the New Calendarin order to establish new dates for our Feasts, Fasts, and services, then we shall in this way testify that the New Calendar is ecclesiastically correct, whereas the Typikon is mistaken. And this, despite the fact that we know that the Typikon derives from the Orthodox Church, the very Church in which the Apostles have laid up as in a valuable treasury whatever pertains to the Truth. And this, despite the fact that we are well aware that the aforementioned violation of the Typikon derives from the Papists, who are engulfed in the darkness of all heresy and error.

As the offspring of Papism and as an anti-ecclesiastical phenomenon, the New Calendar has nothing, other than confusion, to offer the Orthodox Church. From the outset of its appearance, the New Calendar was understood in this way by its opponents:

Patriarch Jeremiah II of Constantinople and the local Synod which he convened in 1583 in Constantinople. From such an unsound beginning, the New Calendar remains to this day a tool of Papist propaganda and very detrimental to the life of the Orthodox Church. Hence, if we were to accept the New Calendar, despite the will of the Holy Church—albeit by way of compromise—it could only lead us to contribute to confusion and disorder in Church life, through which we would undermine by our own hands the authority of the Holy Orthodox Church.

Therefore, just as we will find ourselves on the road of the grave sin of disobedience to the Church if we accept the New Calendar in its entirety by repudiating the Sacred Canons, so also do we find ourselves on the same road of disobedience if we accept the New Calendar in a mixed form, by repudiating the requirements of the Typikon .

From the foregoing, it is clear why the Orthodox Church was so resolutely and ardently opposed to this anti-ecclesiastical innovation from the inception of the calendar reform until recently.

As soon as Pope Gregory XIII introduced the New Calendar, straightway in the same year, 1582, Œcumenical Patriarch Jeremiah II, together with his Synod, condemned the new Roman reckoning as antithetical to the Tradition of the Orthodox Church. * The following year, 1583, Patriarch Jeremiah, with the participation of Patriarch Sylvester of Alexandria and Patriarch Sophronios IV of Jerusalem, convened an ecclesiastical Synod, which condemned the introduction of the Gregorian Calendar into the Roman Church as contrary to the Sacred Canons of the Catholic Church and as violating the prescription of the First Œcumenical Synod concerning the calculation of Holy Pascha.

This Synod, in its Sigillion of 20 November 1583, urges the Orthodox to adhere steadfastly and unswervingly to the Orthodox Calendar and the Julian Paschalion unto the shedding of their blood and imposes upon all who transgress this injunction the anathema of expulsion from the Orthodox Church. *

The Synod of Constantinople communicated this decision to all of the Eastern Churches, to Metropolitan Dionysii of Moscow, to the Church of the Ionian islands, to the renowned champion of Orthodoxy in Western Europe, Prince Konstantin Ostrozhsky, to Niccolo da Ponte, the Doge of Venice, and to Pope Gregory XIII, who was responsible for disturbances in the Church.

Thus, the Œcumenical Patriarchs and, together with them, the whole Catholic Church in the ensuing centuries, reacted in a completely negative way to the introduction of the New Calendar. *

For example, Patriarch Kallinikos II of Constantinople, along with Patriarch Athanasios IV of Antioch, testified that the celebration of Pascha with the Papists, the rejection of the ordinance of the Orthodox Church concerning fasting, and the acceptance of the injunctions of the Roman Church constitute a betrayal of Orthodoxy and a violation of the laws of the Holy Fathers that is destructive for the flock of the Orthodox Church, and that, for this reason, every Christian is obligated to celebrate Pascha and the Feasts connected with it, as well as all of the seasons of the ecclesiastical year, as these have been set forth in the practice of the Orthodox East and not in the manner of the heterodox West, which is alien to the Faith.

In his Encyclical of 1756, Œcumenical Patriarch Cyril V utters fearsome imprecations—applicable both in this transient earthly life and in eternal life—against all Christians who accept the New Calendar. * With the intention of protecting Christians from accepting the New Calendar, on the ground that it was a very great sin, in 1848, Œcumenical Patriarch Anthimos VI, together with the other Eastern Patriarchs, that is, Hierotheos II of Alexandria, Methodios of Antioch, Cyril II of Jerusalem, and their Synods, in their Encyclical in the Name of the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church, set forth the following Confession of Faith:

Since with us neither Patriarchs nor Synods have ever been able to introduce novelties, because the defender of our religion is the very Body of the Church, that is, the People of God themselves, who wish their religion to be eternally unchanging and identical with that of their Fathers..., “Let us hold fast the confession,” which we have received unadulterated from such great men, abhorring every innovation as a suggestion of the Devil; whoever accepts innovations censures as deficient the Orthodox Faith that has hitherto been preached. But this Faith, in its integrity, has now been sealed, admitting neither decrease nor increase, nor any alteration whatsoever, and he who dares either to do or to advise or to contemplate this has already denied the Faith of Christ, has already voluntarily placed himself under eternal anathema on account of his blasphemy against the Holy Spirit as, supposedly, not having spoken perfectly in the Scriptures and through the Œcumenical Synods.... All, therefore, who innovate either in heresy or in schism, have voluntarily “put on cursing as a garment,” as the Psalmist says, whether they happen to be Popes, Patriarchs, clergy, or laity; Even if an Angel from Heaven preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed . *

Between 1902 and 1904, at the initiative of the renowned Patriarch Joachim III of Constantinople, the Autocephalous Churches of Constantinople, Jerusalem, Greece, Russia, Serbia, Romania, and Montenegro, in the persons of their Primates, expressed their rejection of the calendar reform of Pope Gregory XIII. *

Likewise, the Pan-Russian Synod of 1917-1918 decided on strict observance of the Old Calendar for ecclesiastical use. * In reaching this decision, the Moscow Synod took under advisement the opinion of Father Dimitry A. Lebedev, a professor at the Moscow Theological Academy, who demonstrated, on the basis of astronomical and canonical data, how destructive any accommodation to the Gregorian Calendar would be, ascribing complete superiority to the ancient Julian Calendar.”*

Unfortunately, the Pan-Orthodox Congress * that was convened by Patriarch Meletios IV of Constantinople in 1923 departed from the sacred traditions which the Œcumenical Patriarchs had so fervently and piously upheld over the long course of centuries. * This Congress decided to accept the New Calendar. The Orthodox laity of Constantinople confronted this uncanonical innovation with evident commotion, and Patriarch Meletios was forced to resign. *

And yet, Gregory VII, who succeeded him as Patriarch of Constantinople, attempted, in 1924, to introduce the New Calendar for the fixed Feasts, temporarily allowing Pascha and the other Feasts dependent on it to be celebrated according to the old Paschal reckoning, until the convocation of an Œcumenical Synod. In the official periodical of the Greek Church, ἐκκλησία, and in certain Russian periodicals, an authoritative article was published in his name and in the name of his Synod concerning the acceptance of the New Calendar on the part of the Patriarchate of Constantinople.

Under the influence of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Romanian Church also decided to celebrate the fixed Feasts by the New Calendar. However, the Eastern Patriarchs of Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem resolutely refused to look into the question of the changing the calendar. *

In his response to the aforementioned article, His Beatitude, Patriarch Tikhon of Moscow and All Russia informed the Œcumenical Patriarch that, although he had received his letter concerning the implementation of the New Calendar starting on 10 March, it had, however, become impossible to introduce it into the Russian Church on account of the staunch opposition of the people. *

As well, the Synods of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad in 1923, 1924, and 1925 totally refused to accept the New Calendar. *

We ought to remain in steadfast solidarity with these Orthodox Churches, without any compromise, observing the Old Calendar in our Church life, following the prescriptions of the Canons, which must remain unshaken, since they form one of the bases of the existence of the Orthodox Church.

Moreover, as attested by scientific data, the New Calendar contains many errors and is certainly less accurate than the Old Calendar. This is the reason why the Scientific Commission that was convened on 18 February 1899 by the Russian Astronomical Society* to make a decision about reforming the calendar stated that “there are no grounds for introducing into Russia (and still less into the Church) the Gregorian Calendar, which is notorious for its errors.”*

It is essential to point out that until recently it was not the Gregorian, but the Julian, Calendar that was used in astronomy.* The American astronomer Newcomb has already spoken in favor of returning to the Julian Calendar, as being simpler and more practical for astronomical calculations.

For us, the opinion of the celebrated Professor Vasily V. Bolotov, of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy, is both useful and of the greatest interest. In the final year of his life, the Holy Synod of the Russian Church appointed him a delegate of the Department of Church Affairs under the Commission newly established by the Russian Astronomical Society to inquire whether the Old Orthodox Calendar was compatible with the New Calendar.

Professor Bolotov investigated this question in all of its details, not only from an ecclesiastical, canonical, scientific, and historical standpoint, but from every possible aspect. Possessing all of this scientific knowledge, he took part in the astronomical meeting of the Scientific Commission, when the Commission examined the issue of the introduction of the New Calendar. And lo and behold, since the meeting could not reach a definite decision, and since many of its members had begun to incline towards the New Calendar, the chairman of the meeting suggested to Bolotov that he express his opinion.

Professor Bolotov set forth his historical arguments for two hours, holding in his hands the astronomical tables * which he had compiled. He defended the Old Calendar wholeheartedly. His conclusions in support of the Old Calendar were so scientific and incontrovertible that the entire meeting unanimously decided in favor of retaining the Old Calendar.

We will always remember this and we will never forget the testament which the great genius and savant Bolotov bequeathed to us regarding the calendar question:

As for me, I consider it wholly undesirable to change the calendar in Russia. I will remain, as I have in the past, a resolute and devout defender of the Julian Calendar. Its exceptional simplicity constitutes its scientific superiority over every other reformed calendar. I believe that the cultural mission of Russia regarding this issue consists in preserving the Julian Calendar in its life for the many centuries to come, and thereby smoothing the way for the peoples of the West to return from the Gregorian Calendar, which is of no use to anyone, to the untainted Old Calendar. *

Dodgers’ Pride Night is back. Will there be protests after 2023 event honored drag nuns?

LGBTQ+ Pride Night at Dodger Stadium is returning this week, seemingly without all the controversy surrounding last year’s event .

This year’s festivities will take place before and during the Dodgers’ game against the Kansas City Royals on Friday night. Fans who purchase a Pride Night ticket pack will receive an LGBTQ+-themed Dodgers jersey .

Pregame activities will include a live DJ, line dancing lessons and a vogue-off dance contest in the center field plaza and an Outloud Sports kickball game on the field.

Activities of a different sort accompanied last year’s Pride event at Dodger Stadium.

A couple of hours before the June 16 game against the San Francisco Giants, roughly 2,000 demonstrators marched along Stadium Way to Vin Scully Avenue. The protest was in response to the Dodgers’ plan to honor the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence — a satirical performance and activist organization made up of queer nuns in drag who are considered blasphemous by some Christians — with the team’s Community Hero Award as part of the Pride Night activities.

Sister Yesate of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence waved a transgender flag while walking the annual San Diego Pride Parade in Hillcrest on July 13.

Full coverage: Dodgers to honor Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence on Pride Night

The Dodgers faced backlash after they said they would no longer honor the satirical LGBTQ+ group. But they reversed course and reinvited the Sisters.

May 19, 2023

The Dodgers confirmed to The Times that no Community Hero Award will be given out this year.

A representative for the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence told The Times via email that because of a large number of Pride season commitments this year, the Sisters will not be able to attend the Dodgers event as an official group, although some members may attend individually and not in nun personas.

Last year’s protest was organized and promoted by a group called Catholics For Catholics . There is no mention of Pride Night protests on the group’s website this year. The organization did not immediately respond to questions from The Times.

The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights advocacy group ran radio ads a year ago calling for a boycott of the Pride Night game because of the plan to honor the Sisters. A Catholic League representative told The Times that no such plans were being made at this time regarding Friday’s game.

Also during the week leading up to last year’s Pride Night, Los Angeles Archbishop José H. Gomez announced that his service hours before the night’s events would be dedicated “for healing due to the harm caused by the Dodgers’ decision to honor a group that intentionally denigrates and profanes the Christian faith.” No such announcement appears on the Archdiocese of Los Angeles website this year. The group did not immediately return a call from The Times.
