CruiseMapper logo

Read our review about Carnival cruise Internet Access prices and Carnival Cruise Line's new WiFi rates, unlimited Internet package and WiFi cost. All Carnival Cruise Lines ships provide the Internet via a satellite connection. Onboard access is facilitated through Internet Cafe and shipwide WiFi coverage. Passengers can use (without any restrictions) their personal laptops, iPhones, smartphones and other WiFi-equipped devices on the Fun Ships.

In late-December 2018 was signed a contract with Speedcast (the world's largest global satellite comm provider) to improve fleet connectivity at sea. By this contract, Carnival increased the fleet's bandwidth in order to provide the highest-quality Internet at sea. Utilizing a total of 40 mini-satellites, Carnival now has the world's largest maritime satellite network. Specifically for Carnival, Speedcast developed the TrueBeam system, which constantly looks for weaknesses that would impact the satellite signal and instantly reroutes it to avoid interruptions. Such interruptions could be weather (“rain fade”), overcrowded networks and line-of-sight blockage.

Carnival cruise WiFi rates, Unlimited Internet

Carnival ship's Wireless Internet Service is a Wireless 802.11b card compatible (standard). Onboard, VPN access is restricted to connections of types different then IPsec or PPTP connections.

Unlimited Internet package

Since July 2015, Carnival offers “massively popular, faster, cheaper and all-round brilliant Internet packages” that initially cost just US$5 per day. The “Social” Internet plan allows connecting only to social networks - Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, Snapchat and other similar websites. Discounted plans are available for the entire voyage.

  • Carnival's unlimited Internet access plans (connected 24/7) are now available fleetwide. These plans can be used on all personal devices (and the ship's Internet Cafe) anytime throughout the voyage - until debarkation. Once purchased there are no refunds.
  • In May 2016, Carnival Australia introduced faster and cheaper Internet and social media Internet packages on the Australia-based ships Legend and Spirit . The improved internet access offers increased bandwidth and speed. The “value package” (cost AUD 30 per day) offers unlimited Internet. The faster “premium package” (cost AUD 50 per day) allows Skype video calls. The new "social media package" (cost AUD 15 per day) offers unlimited access to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter.
  • Additional discounted plans for Internet access are available for the entire voyage. The new packages follow the company's 2015-launched "Selfies at Sea" phone app. Available for download (free of charge) at Android and Apple stores, the new mobile app collates a series of photos taken on the ship into a mini-movie which can be shared on social media channels.

NEW Carnival cruise ship Wi-Fi plans

In 2017, Carnival updated the cruise ship WiFi service fleetwide, introducing the option to pre-purchase both WiFi and Internet packages online.

Starting April 19, 2017, the company offers pre-purchasing internet plans (first introduced on Carnival Fascination and Carnival Vista , fleetwide rollout by mid-summer 2017). The option is available via "Manage My Booking’ (tab at Carnival.com) where customers can select a package for the itinerary duration.

Carnival's new Wi-Fi plans can be purchased (at discounted rates) by fully booked customers for either the entire itinerary or for a day (24-hour period). Daily packages are also available for shipboard purchasing.

In December 2023, CCL increased the Social Plan's onboard price from US$15 to $18 per person per day. The Value Plan now costs US$23 (up from $20), while the Premium Plan is priced at US$25 (from $22).

With pPre-purchasing Wi-Fi prior to boarding, the Social Plan costs $15.30 (previously $12.75), the Value Plan costs US$19.55 (up from $17), and the Premium Plan costs US$21.25 (up from $18.70).

NOTE : On November 2, 2018, Carnival raised the price of its basic internet plan by 60%. The new price for the "social media package" was US$8 per day ($6,80 per day if pre-purchased prior departure). Day plans for this package are not available - must be purchased cruise-long package. The old price for the social media package was US$5 per day ($4 per day if pre-purchased).

WiFi package cost USD 12 per day, with a discount price of US$10,25 (if pre-purchased prior departure). Premium WiFi package cost USD 17.70 per day ($14,88 if pre-purchased).

For both WiFi plans are available 24-hour / daily rates, respectively, $16 and $25.

  • "Social Package" (cost US$8 per day) offers access to the most popular applications and websites, including Facebook (and Facebook Messenger), Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Linkedin, WhatsApp, plus the most popular airline websites. The Social plan doesn't include Snapchat, Facetime, iMessage, in-app calling or access to any other apps or websites.
  • "Value Package" (cost US$12 per day, or US$10.25 if pre-purchased) offers access to all websites and apps, including e-mail, news, banking, sports, weather, all social media. The Value plan doesn't support music and video streaming or Skype calling (bandwidth-intensive services).
  • "Premium Package (cost US$17.70 per day, or US$14.88 if pre-purchased) offers the fastest possible Internet connection. Depending on the coverage, speeds can be up to 3 times faster compared to the "Value Package". The Premium plan includes all apps and websites, plus streaming services and Skype video calling.

Booked passengers can upgrade from one plan to another and are also allowed to use multiple devices per plan (including the ship's onboard computers), but only on one device at a time. All the new Carnival WiFi plans do not include video streaming (Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Prime) and don't support WiFi Calling (voice calls via the ship's Wi-Fi network) and Facetime (Apple's video telephony) services. Printing services on the ship are provided at no charge.

Cruise Internet package prices

Note: The above-listed Internet package plans are currently offered not on all ships in the fleet, but only on Dream, Glory, and Magic. The Breeze was excluded from this indeed small list. The line's official excuse is the slow satellite connection speeds at sea.

Carnival cruise Internet cost-cutting tips

  • before the sailing convert your email settings to basic (less graphic intense)
  • if you're planning to work online while sailing, discuss VPN limitations with your firm's IT specialist (Carnival will not be able to change settings onboard).
  • packing checklist: WiFi-enabled laptop/mobile devices, power supply (for each of your devices), data cables, headphones.
  • You can connect to a free WiFi when the ship is at call ports - ask some from the crew where. There's also free WiFi on the ship, but it's relatively slow (public areas offer much better connection / stronger signals than cabins).
  • phone calls from a Carnival ship cost $2 per minute (the charge through "Cellular at Sea" is $2,50 per minute). And remember:
  • 1 - the satellite Internet is a lot slower than the high-speed connection onshore (your data must be transmitted over a slow signal to a satellite 22000 ml above you, then the satellite bounces your data back down to the exchange). Tip: the onboard Internet speed is much better in the early morning (5 to 8 AM) and also around dinner times (6 to 10 PM).
  • 2 - the onboard Internet access is not guaranteed at all times (satellite communications are subject to disruptions due to weather patterns/location)
  • 3 - (some excerpts from forum reviews) "extremely slow", "slower than dial-up", "minutes are eaten pretty quickly", "because of the connection sometimes not everything is sent".
  • 4 - Verizon text message prices on cruise ships (international messaging): sent ($0,25 text, $0,50 data) and received ($0,20 text & $0,25 data).

Carnival's WiFi Internet technology

The line's owner Carnival Corporation started rolling out the WiFi@Sea Internet across technology not exclusively to Carnival Cruise Lines ships, but to all its brand lines fleets. The new technology features a hybrid connectivity (satellite and land-based data) system. It combines bandwidth with several available for pre-purchasing Internet plans, different levels of pricing and also new Internet packages.

The process of implementing the new system started in 2014. Carnival Corp's largest brand - the Carnival cruise line - was the first that moved from the traditional pay-as-you-go Internet (USD 0,75 per minute, or discounted Internet packages) to pay-per-day packages. The cheapest is the "social" package priced US$5 per-day allowing access to popular websites and apps. Next is the "value" package US$16 per day (with restrictions for some intensive websites). The third "premium" package costs US$25 per day (with full web access and guaranteed fast speeds).

The new Carnival "cruise WiFi" system is first-of-its-kind in the passenger shipping industry It's an enhanced (high-speed) hybrid wireless network service to be rolled out to all ships in the fleets of all 9 Carnival brand lines. The new system is expected to encourage the interest in ship cruising among the new tech-savvy generation. The new plans already show better penetration and higher usage rates. The new system allows a greater number of mobile devices, while the new Internet pricing is easier to understand.

This unique system integrates land-based, strategically located antennas (installed along the cruise itinerary routes), advanced satellites (over 31 satellite systems) and cruise port Wi-Fi connections, forming the Carnival's "smart hybrid" network. The system gives cruise passengers the highest possible strength of signal and bandwidth capacity. The new network provides Internet connectivity speeds 10 times faster than previously offered by Carnival.

All system upgrades, hardware changes, and new Internet equipment installations were done during the ships' dry-dock refurbishments .

In February 2018, Carnival Corporation partnered with SES Networks to provide the industry's biggest bandwidth to a mobile shipboard platform (first introduced on Regal Princess ). The new technology broke all previous myths about connectivity limitations at sea. The fastest cruise ship internet remained affordable (priced at USD 10 per day). The technology combines the SES Networks satellites with the MedallionNet and provides bandwidth of minimum 1,5 gigabits per second to the vessel. The tests were done on February 26, 2018, while Regal Princess was docked at the private island Princess Cays Bahamas . During the tests was reached Internet speed of 2,6 gigabits per second. Regal Princess is one of the "Medallion-class" Carnival Corporation ships linked to the company's MedallionNet.

Carnival cruise ship Internet Cafe

The Internet Cafe is open 24-hours, as a venue, it features private PC terminals (Windows XP) for web browsing, chat, and e-mail services. For guests convenience, there is an Internet Cafe Manager for assistance. Here passengers can browse through the following Carnival's "free of charge websites": Carnival.com, GoCCL.com, JohnHealdsBlog.com, CellularAtSea.com, and BarclayCardus.com (Carnival World MasterCard).

All these websites can be accessed without purchasing an Internet plan. At the PC terminals, you can't edit MS Office documents, but most files can be viewed (in their "read-only" mode).

Carnival WIFI, Fun Hub website and HUB app

The Fun Hub Carnival website can be accessed through Wi-Fi enabled devices. Guests must connect to the Carnival WiFi network and open an Internet browser. Fun Hub is also accessible at the complimentary Internet café locations with 24-hour access. Currently available on Carnival Breeze, Dream, Magic, Sunshine and Vista, the Fun Hub locations allow passengers free access to informative websites updated daily.

The Fun Hub site details ship’s numerous activities, including:

  • daily events, youth programs, entertainment options
  • food and beverage offerings, venue descriptions, sample menus
  • itinerary and weather information
  • latest news, sports scores
  • key shipboard personnel' biographies
  • ship announcements
  • deck plans and maps
  • frequently asked questions.

A filtering option assists in planning guests' day. FunHub is available free of charge on any Internet Café Fun Hub computer or Wi-Fi device. Internet access to sites that are outside the Fun Hub is also available wirelessly and through all Fun Hub locations. Charges will apply.

In August 2015, Carnival announced that the HUB app, offering passengers free access to onboard account balances, daily schedules, deck plans, dining info, and an innovative “chat” feature, had been so well received (following the successful trial period on Carnival Breeze) that it was scheduled to debut on all Carnival vessels by summer of 2016. Next in line, ready to welcome the HUB app, are Carnival Conquest, Carnival Glory, Carnival Pride, and Carnival Sunshine, by the end of 2015.

The new HUB mobile app provides guests with an at-a-glance, convenient view of ship’s features and facilities along with updates on events taking place onboard, all free of charge. The app is available for download at Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Its innovative “chat” feature allows passengers to exchange messages with their companions using their mobile devices. A flat fee of $5 is applied for the entire cruise.

The HUB app also includes precise day-by-day schedules of hundreds of onboard events, info on beverage and food venues, Sail & Sign account balance, itinerary details, searchable deck plans and more. Recently added options provide the ability to pre-purchase Carnival’s Bottomless Bubbles and Cheers! beverage programs and upload photos displayed on the 270-sq.foot Seaside Theatre during the cruise. Additional features are to be added in the future.

Carnival Corporation launched a new WiFi@Sea system on all cruise ships sailing in the Caribbean. The global fleet roll-out continued with Alaska (2015 summer) and in 2016 extended to Europe (Baltic, Mediterranean, Western Europe) and Asia.

Carnival Cruise WiFi: Ultimate Guide To Carnival WiFi Plans

Imagine Cruising without the internet. No media uploading and no calling. Sounds weird, right? It’s totally abnormal for me as I strongly believe that “Life without the internet is like paralysis.”

But don’t worry. Carnival Cruises offers onboard Internet packages of different prices and quality. Depending on your preferences, these include social media, value, and premium packages.

But hold on! These packages are expensive and unsuitable for streaming videos or other high-bandwidth activities. So, before purchasing, knowing what you’re getting and what you need is important.

So hang on, my fellow cruisers. I’ve covered all your questions regarding Carnival Cruise WiFi in this article.

Also, at the end, I’ve shared my tips and tricks related to Carnival WiFi that will offer convenience and help you save on your budget.

So, let’s get started.

Table of Contents

How Much Do Carnival Wifi Packages Cost?

wifi package on carnival

Carnival offers different WiFi packages based on your needs and preferences. Each package has its charges and speeds.

The packages range from $12.75 per day to $30 per day. Prices may vary depending on the type of cruise and the duration of the cruise.

But you can also opt for the full vacation WiFi package, which costs less. I highly recommend this option as I’ve personally used it.

Amazingly, there’s also a bonus from Carnival: if you buy any package before boarding, you’ll get a 15% discount as a gift. Remember, you must purchase before getting on board to avail of this offer.

What Are The Available Carnival Wifi Packages?

Carnival WiFi offers three different internet packages depending on your needs. These are social, value, and premium.

1- The Social Plan

social plan

If you’re someone like me and love constantly uploading on social media, there’s a specific plan just for your needs: the “social” plan.

With this option, you’ll have access to various social media platforms, enabling you to stay connected with friends and share your cruise experiences.

Keep in mind that you can’t make video calls on this plan. I faced a major misunderstanding, but now I’m sharing this insight with you so that you can stay informed.

The popular social package also allows access to popular airline sites, enabling you to check in for your flight towards the end of your cruise.

The price of this social plan is $15 per day. But if you purchase it before boarding, it will cost you $12.75 per day.

The entire cruise costs $89.25 (pre-purchase). Most importantly, buying a 24-hour pass for the Social Wi-fi plan is impossible.

  • Allow usage for Snapchat, FaceBook Messenger, WhatsApp, and other platforms

2- The Value Plan

the value

The Value Plan is for people who enjoy browsing their favorite websites while accessing social media during the cruise.

So, if you’re someone needing to check Linkedin, emails, or handle other important stuff on websites, the Value Plan is your go-to. Its cost after boarding is $20, but if purchased beforehand, it’s only $17. For a 7-day cruise, it totals $119.

It’s also available as a 24-hour pass, priced at $22 per day. Unfortunately, video or music streaming is not supported by this plan.

  • Decent Speed
  • Allow surfing
  • Don’t allow video calling and streaming

3- The Premium Plan

The Premium Plan

The Premium Plan is the top tier offering from Carnival Cruise, providing faster and broader service compared to the Social and Value packages.

Its major advantage lies in access to video and music streaming. It also supports video calling on platforms like Skype and Zoom, wherever coverage allows.

This package is available before boarding for $18.70 per person per day. However, if you purchase it after boarding, the price increases to $22 daily. For a seven-day trip, the total cost would amount to $130.90

For the 24-hour pass, the daily costs rise to $30. This could save you money if you only need access on specific days.

  • Support Skype, Zoom, etc, for video calling
  • Allow streaming

Are There Different Speed Options With Carnival WiFi Packages?

Carnival WiFi Packages

Yes. Each Carnival Cruise WiFi package offers different speeds. The Premium plan stands out as the fastest service, providing speeds up to three times faster than the Social and Value plans.

I opted for the Premium plan during my cruise, and its speed was truly impressive. I experienced no connection problems while video and music streaming or conducting video calls. It delivered an excellent performance overall.

While the Value Plan does offer decent speed, it doesn’t come closer to the Premium plan. Also, the Value Plan doesn’t support video calls and streaming due to its lower bandwidth.

How Fast Is The Internet On Carnival Cruise?

The internet speed on Carnival Cruise ships can vary. It depends on where the ship is, how many people are using it, and the internet plan you bought.

You might not get super-fast speeds like at home, but it works okay for basic things like social media or emails.

Newer ships have better Internet, up to 1-2 mbps on older ones and 8-10 mbps on newer ones, especially those with Starlink.

The problem isn’t just speed; it’s also about “latency.” This is around 40-60 milliseconds at home, but on regular ship Wi-Fi, it’s slower at about 700 milliseconds. This causes buffering and frustration.

On Starlink-equipped ships, I tested and found faster speeds of around 35 milliseconds. This made watching Netflix and Amazon Prime smooth without any issues.

If your room is on a lower deck, like Cove Balconies , you might have a slower internet speed compared to upper decks because of better satellite communication. So, consider that when choosing your cabin if you and yours care about internet speed.

Can You Call Home?

If you have the Premium Plan, you can make calls to your love ones and home using apps like FaceTime audio, Skype, or WhatsApp.

If your phone can make calls over WiFi, you can use that feature with the Premium Plan. I use T-Mobile, and I put my phone on airplane mode when I get on the ship.

Then, I turn on the T-Mobile WiFi so my phone works like a normal phone using the ship’s Internet. WiFi calling doesn’t use your cell data, just the Internet. AT&T also has WiFi calling.

Can I Purchase Carnival WiFi Packages Before the Cruise?

wifi speed

Yes. Purchasing a Carnival WiFi package before the cruise is the best time, as you get a 15% discount on every plan.

I also purchased the Premium Plan before boarding, which costs me $18.70 per day instead of $22.

Is There a Carnival WiFi Device Limit?

Carnival Cruise WiFi typically has a restriction on the number of devices connected to a single WiFi package at a time. However, this limit depends on the specific package purchased.

Some packages are to be connected at a time, while others could allow multi-device to be connected concurrently.

The package I purchased only provides Internet to a single device at a time. If someone else was using my package, I could disconnect their access when I logged in. With this feature, I could control the device linked to my WiFi package.

Can You Use a VPN On Carnival Cruise WiFi?

I know many people are concerned about VPN usage, especially on using public Wi-Fi. So that’s something really important to know on cruise ships. But Carnival Cruise line does say that they are safe and secure.

However, most cruise ships do not allow you to use a VPN on cruise ship WiFi.

However, Norwegian Cruise Line allows VPN usage on their WiFi. However, I’m unsure whether it works for all their plans or the only premium one.

Are There Any Free Wifi Access Points Onboard A Carnival Cruise?

Carnival Cruise Line typically offers internet access through their WiFi packages, but there are several tricks you can use to access free WiFi points.

During my cruise, a lot of people were searching for a free WiFi spot, and some of my fellows were asking me to turn on my WiFi hotspot.

From all these experiences, I’ve compiled a list of ways to access free WiFi without purchasing it.

  • Ask your fellow cruiser to share device WiFi (If he has purchased the package)
  • Search for the local restaurant with a free WiFi spot
  • Take help from Crew members
  • Walk up to the open decks to pick up a signal from the local area or port
  • Look for the Bars with Free WiFi in Port

The Alternative Of Carnival Cruise Line Wi-Fi: Carnival Hub App

Back in 2015, Carnival Cruise Line introduced the HUB app. At first, it lets guests do simple stuff like reading a digital Fun Times, checking account balances, and seeing the weather at ports.

Spend $5 for the whole cruise on the Carnival Hub app for chatting with onboard friends and family.

Now, the app does a lot more:

  • Complete cruise check-in
  • Begin the mandatory muster drill
  • Order food for delivery to most spots on the ship
  • Read restaurant menus and make dining reservations
  • View ship maps
  • Chat with cruise companions
  • Purchase things such as shore excursions, drink packages, and wifi packages

You can grab the app from the Google Play Store or iTunes. Getting it before you board to dodge hefty fees from your cell phone provider is a good idea.

You don’t have to buy the Internet to use the app.

How Do You Avoid Mobile Phone Charges At Sea?

The simplest way is to put your phone in “airplane mode.” Then, go to your device settings and turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. This way, your smartphone can still connect with your other devices.

It’s a good idea to tell your friends and family that you’re doing this. Just in case they need to reach you while you’re away.

How To Join Carnival Wi-Fi Packages?

Getting Wi-Fi on the ship is easy.

Just check your laptop or personal device’s Wi-Fi settings. You’ll see a list of available networks. Look for “Carnival Vista Wi-Fi” or “Carnival Guest Wi-Fi.”

Choose that network. Once connected, a window will pop up asking for your folio number and date of birth. Enter those, then click login.

After that, click confirm, and you’re online. If you’re using a laptop and don’t see the prompts, open your browser and go to carnivalwifi.com. If you have trouble connecting, Guest Services can help you out.

Does Carnival Use Starlink, And Why Should I Care?

Carnival is rolling out Starlink Internet across its ships, offering a better onboard Internet experience.

Starlink, Elon Musk’s project, provides faster Internet using satellite technology at lower costs and higher speeds.

Many cruise lines, including Carnival, upgrade their onboard Internet using Starlink. It theoretically offers faster speeds than older cruise ship Internet. However, cruise IT departments manage speeds to ensure stability when many passengers are online.

On my recent cruise, the onboard Internet was upgraded to Starlink. For the first time, I stopped complaining about slow download speeds. It wasn’t lightning-fast, but it was more stable and less frustrating. Upload speed had also improved.

If you’ve had issues with cruise Wi-Fi before, check if your ship has switched to Starlink before purchasing Wi-Fi.

Which Carnival Ships Have Starlink?

  • Carnival Celebration
  • Carnival Elation
  • Carnival Magic
  • Carnival Panorama
  • Carnival Pride
  • Carnival Sunrise
  • Carnival Sunshine
  • Carnival Valor
  • Carnival Venezia
  • Carnival Vista
  • Carnival Jubilee (future ship to be equipped with Starlink)

Can I Upgrade Or Change My Carnival Wi-fi Plan During The Cruise?

You can upgrade or change your Carnival WiFi package during the cruise. Visit the Guest Services desk onboard the ship, and they’ll assist you in switching to a different WiFi package if needed.

Tips For Maximizing The Usage Of Carnival Internet Plan

Here are my tips for making the most of your Carnival WiFi package:

  • Purchase the WiFi Package before boarding
  • Choose package wisely
  • Manage devices
  • Optimize usage
  • Access WiFi during less crowded hours
  • Look for ships with improved internet networks like Starlink

Expert Tips And Hints When Using Carnival Cruise WiFi

Here are some simple tips for using Carnival Cruise WiFi:

  • Plan for Savings: Buy your WiFi plan before your cruise to save around 15% and ensure full coverage.
  • Save Money on Port Days: Consider getting WiFi only on sea days. Use free WiFi in ports to save money.
  • Share Connection Wisely: Share WiFi with friends but agree on times to avoid disconnecting each other.
  • Affordable Chat Service: Spend $5 for the whole cruise on the Carnival Hub app to chat with onboard friends and family.
  • Device Usage Limit: One device at a time on the plan, but multiple devices can use it. You might have to kick someone off if they’re already using it.
  • Streaming Services Use: Some say no, but I used Amazon Music without issues. Download Netflix shows before the cruise for smoother watching.
  • Easy Chat Purchase: Pay $5 onboard for the chat feature, billed directly to your Sail & Sign account.
  • Guest Services Help: If internet issues arise, go to Guest Services. They might refund charges if your device isn’t connecting.

Is Carnival WiFi Worth It?

Simply put, no. But the real answer depends on you! Carnival WiFi is pricier than what we’re used to at home. Whether it’s worth it depends on your needs.

Is Carnival’s WiFi Ever On Sale Or Discounted?

No, Carnival’s WiFi isn’t on sale or discounted regularly. However, they offer a 15% discount if you purchase the WiFi package before boarding.

How Reliable Is The WiFi Connection Provided By Carnival Cruise?

Carnival Cruise Line claims its WiFi is safe and secure, but its reliability can vary. It’s generally okay for basic tasks, but streaming might not be smooth. Remember that it might not be as secure or consistent as you’re used to at home.

Final Words

Hopefully, you should be clear about the Carnival Cruise WiFi questions.

In conclusion, if you really need internet on a cruise, go with any of the packages depending on your needs. Otherwise, just throw your mobile in a safe and enjoy a cruise vacation.

However, if you’re considering the Carnival WiFi package, buy it before boarding, as it will cost 15% less than onboard pricing.

Understanding Carnival Internet Packages

Embarking on a Carnival cruise is an exciting adventure, but staying connected to the outside world while at sea is a common concern for many travelers. While many aspects of Carnival cruising are all-inclusive , internet is not one of them.

Whether it’s to share experiences on social media, stay in touch with family and friends, or keep up with work, internet access has become a crucial part of the cruising experience.

Carnival Cruise Line offers various Wi-Fi packages to cater to different needs, ensuring that passengers can choose a plan that best suits their internet usage while on board.

The Social Wi-Fi Plan

Designed for the social media enthusiast, the Social Wi-Fi Plan offers access to popular social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and LinkedIn.

This plan also supports messaging apps such as Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and Snapchat, making it easier to stay in touch without the need for full internet access.

However, it’s important to note that video calls are not supported under this Carnival cruise internet plan.

The Social Wi-Fi Plan is the most budget-friendly option, with pricing typically starting at $12.75 per day if booked before boarding. This cost covers the entire duration of the trip, with no option for a 24-hour pass.

The Value Wi-Fi Plan

The Value Wi-Fi Plan takes connectivity a step further by including everything in the Social plan, plus access to a wider range of websites.

However, this plan does not support streaming of video or music, so it’s more suited for browsing and email rather than entertainment.

The pre-boarding price is usually around $17 per day, offering a balance between connectivity and cost. For those who need internet access for shorter periods, a 24-hour pass is available onboard at a slightly higher rate.

The Premium WiFi Plan

For those requiring the most comprehensive internet access, the Premium WiFi Plan offers the fastest connection available of the Carnival cruise internet plans.

This plan is suitable for streaming videos, music, and even supports video calling through platforms like Skype, Zoom, and Teams. The speed and range of access make it ideal for passengers who need a more robust internet experience.

Pricing for this plan starts at approximately $18.70 per day when booked in advance and provides the most flexibility and functionality of all the Wi-Fi options.

Each plan is tailored to different types of internet users, ensuring that whether you’re a casual social media user or someone who needs more extensive online access, there’s an option that fits your needs.

When selecting a plan, consider your intended usage, the length of your cruise, and whether you prefer paying upfront for the entire journey or opting for more flexible day-by-day access.

Pricing and Discounts

The cost of internet access on a Carnival cruise can vary depending on several factors, including the type of Wi-Fi package you choose, the duration of your cruise, and whether you purchase the plan in advance or onboard.

Understanding these pricing structures is key to choosing a Carnival cruise internet package that offers the best value for your needs.

Standard Pricing for Wi-Fi Plans

Each Wi-Fi plan offered by Carnival has a standard per day rate. These rates are calculated on a “per person, per day” basis for the entire duration of the cruise. Here’s a general idea of the pricing as of the latest information:

  • Social Wi-Fi Plan : Starting at $12.75 per day when booked in advance.
  • Value Wi-Fi Plan : Approximately $17 per day with pre-boarding booking.
  • Premium Wi-Fi Plan : Around $18.70 per day if purchased before the cruise.

It’s important to note that prices are subject to change and may vary slightly depending on the specific cruise.

Pre-Boarding Discounts

Booking your Wi-Fi plan before you board can lead to significant savings. Carnival typically offers a 15% discount on internet plans when purchased in advance through their website or via the cruise personalizer.

This pre-boarding discount is available up until the day before your cruise departs. The cut-off time is usually 11:59 PM EST the night before embarkation, so it’s advisable not to wait until the last minute.

24-Hour Passes

For those who only need occasional internet access, Carnival provides a 24-hour pass option for the Value and Premium plans.

This option is only available for purchase onboard and allows for greater flexibility, especially on shorter cruises or for passengers who plan to spend most of their time off-ship.

The cost of a 24-hour pass is slightly higher than the daily rate of the continuous plan, reflecting the convenience and flexibility it offers.

Cost Comparison: Full Duration vs. Single-Day Plans

When deciding whether to purchase internet for the full duration of your cruise or to opt for single-day plans, consider your internet usage patterns.

While the per-day cost is lower when purchasing for the full duration, single-day plans offer the flexibility to only pay for what you use.

For example, on a 7-day cruise, the total cost for a continuous plan would be less per day compared to buying multiple single-day passes.

Additional Considerations

  • Multiple Devices : The Wi-Fi plans are sold on a per-person basis, not per device. This means you can switch between devices, but only one device can be used at a time per plan.
  • Upgrades : If you find that your chosen plan doesn’t meet your needs, upgrades to a higher-tier plan are usually possible once onboard.

In summary, Carnival’s Wi-Fi plans are structured to cater to a range of needs and budgets. By understanding the pricing and the available discounts, you can make a cost-effective decision that aligns with your internet usage while enjoying your cruise.

In the following sections, we’ll explore the specifics of accessing and using the Carnival cruise internet, limitations, and tips to make the most out of your Wi-Fi experience on board.

Carnival Raising Wi-Fi Prices Up to 20% Starting Next Week

The cost of staying in touch on a Carnival cruise is getting more expensive. An update to the Carnival website shows new prices coming for its three wi-fi plans starting December 8.

In just a week, the cost for some plans will rise as much as 20% and in some cases reach as much as $25 per day.

Carnival Liberty in Nassau

The new prices show price increases for all plans — Social, Value, and Premium. These three plans all offer different levels of connectivity. The Social plan allows access to social media and airline websites, but little else. The Value plan offers full web access but does not offer streaming. The Premium plan provides faster speeds and also offers video calling and Netflix.

Carnival offers different price points for these services depending on if you purchase them onboard or ahead of time. Below, we’ve laid out the new pricing compared to the old:

As you can see, all prices are seeing a substantial bump that ranges from roughly 13-20%. Over the course of a 7-day cruise the cost of the highest-tier Premium plan will be an extra $21 if bought onboard compared to the old pricing. It would now also cost a total of $175 to stay connected with that plan for a 7-day cruise when bought on the ship.

Prices Rise Quickly Over the Past Year

The price of Carnival’s wi-fi has increased dramatically since cruises have returned. We believe this to be the fourth price increase since September 2022, just over a year ago.

In late 2022, the least expensive Social plan was just $8.50 per day if bought ahead of the cruise. With this increase, the price will be $15.30 per day if bought before the cruise. That’s an 80% increase.

On the high-end, as late as September 2022 the Premium plan was $14.45 per day if bought ahead of time. This new pricing will now offer pre-cruise purchases at $21.25 per day, or a 47% increase.

Note that the Premium plan prices now match rival Royal Caribbean. During a recent cruise, we saw onboard pricing of $24.99 for that cruise line’s VOOM “Surf+Stream” package , in line with Carnival’s new pricing.

However, we were able to book access pre-cruise on Royal Caribbean for about $17 per day, which is a discount to the new Carnival pre-cruise price.

Wi-Fi on cruise ships: 5 things to know about internet use on board

Gene Sloan

I have good news for those of you who assume the only way to stay in touch with home from a cruise ship is via a message in a bottle: Cruise ships come equipped with internet, and cruise Wi-Fi connections have been getting faster at a rapid rate — and cheaper, too.

While checking emails and surfing the web on some vessels still requires the patience of Job, onboard technological improvements on many ships combined with new satellite and direct ship-to-shore systems is making cruise internet access much more like what you find on land.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

If you're a first-time cruiser, you're likely most concerned with the basics: Do cruise ships have Wi-Fi and how much does Wi-Fi cost on a cruise? Repeat cruisers who have paid the price for finicky service may be wondering the best way to access fast connection speeds across their devices while avoiding unnecessary charges.

I can guide you through the ins and outs of Wi-Fi on cruise ships. Here are five things to know about onboard internet before you set sail.

Wi-Fi on cruise ships will never be as fast (or reliable) as home

Yes, all cruise ships today offer an internet connection, but it might not be the seamless experience you've come to expect on land.

For most of the many years I've been writing about cruising, the typical internet connection at sea hasn't just been slow. It's been glacial. You'd click on a website only to experience many seconds of frustration. Maybe the page would come up. Maybe it wouldn't. Maybe the cruise would end while you were still sitting there.

Related: 16 mistakes cruise ship passengers make on disembarkation day

Why the slow speeds? To start, there is no Comcast cable wire running to your cruise ship. On cruise ships, every packet of data you are downloading onto your phone or computer, for the most part, is coming over a satellite, which is not a quick or inexpensive proposition.

The maritime communication companies that specialize in providing internet connections to ships have been trying to speed things up in recent years. Solutions have included adding more satellites and linking their systems to land-based towers that connect with ships as they near shore.

carnival cruise wifi fee

But, in the end, there are limits to just how well a satellite system can work. For starters, a ship needs a clear "line of sight" to a satellite to exchange data, something that isn't always the case. Cruise ships traveling through the famed Norwegian fjords, for instance, can lose their satellite signal due to the height of surrounding mountains.

And there are certain parts of the world where satellite coverage is too thin or nonexistent to allow for internet access on cruise ships. During a sailing in the Russian Arctic on a Hapag-Lloyd Cruises ship, I was forced to live without internet for a good part of a week due to a lack of satellite coverage in the area (something, I must say, was kind of wonderful).

So while onboard cruise Wi-Fi speeds are getting better, they'll never be as fast as at home, where a hard wire brings the signal straight to your router.

Onboard internet speed is getting much faster

On some cruise ships, the signal has become so much faster you now can stream Netflix from the comfort of your cabin — something that would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.

New satellite systems, paired with multimillion-dollar investments in shipboard technology, really are making things better in a big way. A turning point came in 2014, when cruise giant Royal Caribbean partnered with satellite company O3b Networks to create a new onboard internet system that it claimed was six times faster than anything else at sea. Called Voom, the system tapped into new Medium Earth Orbit satellites operated by O3b that can shoot their beams directly at ships as they move.

When I ran a speed test of Voom on Adventure of the Seas, I found the line's fastest option, the Surf + Stream service, usually offered download speeds of just around 3 megabits per second. I never found download speeds exceeding 4 Mbps, but I did see it drop as low as 1.5 Mbps. While still significantly slower than many home connections, that's fast enough to enjoy Netflix and other streaming video services, though I did experience grainy video and buffering issues on occasion.

carnival cruise wifi fee

Royal Caribbean still claims Voom is the fastest and best Wi-Fi option on cruise ships today. But we're a bit skeptical – not because the Wi-Fi is slower than stated, but because other cruise lines, like Carnival Cruise Line , are quickly catching up.

Carnival cruise Wi-Fi is also fast enough to support Netflix streaming on some ships, the company says. The cruise line uses a hybrid system that combines faster satellite connections at sea with a network of less-expensive land-based towers that take over as its vessels near coastal areas.

On a sailing on one of the Carnival ships outfitted for faster internet, Carnival Sunrise , I did notice a significant improvement in cruise Wi-Fi speed. But the promised access to Netflix streaming wasn't quite as smooth as I had hoped. Clicking on a favorite show, I only could watch for a few minutes before the connection inevitably froze.

Some lines in just the last year or so have begun partnering with Elon Musk's Starlink system for speedy internet.

Cruise internet costs have gone down

Just a few years back, you had to pay a small fortune for the privilege of accessing the internet on a cruise ship. The base rate for onboard Wi-Fi for years started around 75 cents a minute. That's $45 for a single hour online!

The old pay-by-the-minute system, which could leave even modest internet users with sky-high bills, is now giving way to simpler and more affordable "all you can browse" plans on many lines.

How much does Wi-Fi cost on a cruise today? Well, the highest-speed version of Royal Caribbean's Voom connection currently costs $26.99 per day for one device. In the old days of 75 cents-a-minute pricing, that same amount of money would have gotten you just 36 minutes of web time.

Royal Caribbean also offers a slower-speed version of Voom that can't support streaming for $19.99 per day for one device. For both cruise internet packages, there are discounts for adding more devices and purchasing a package online before your sailing.

Another line bringing down internet costs dramatically is Carnival. At the very low end, it now offers a Social Wi-Fi plan that allows access to all the key social sites (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) as well as messaging services such as WhatsApp, for just $15.30 a day ($18 when purchased on board). A slightly more expensive Value Wi-Fi plan, at $19.55 per day when bought in advance ($23 per day when bought on board), adds access to email and most websites.

The line's top-tier Premium Wi-Fi plan, at $21.25 per day when bought in advance ($25 when bought onboard), triples the speed of the Value plan and adds access to VoIP calling on messaging apps and Skype (but not FaceTime). Note that you might be able to make Wi-Fi calls from an iPhone or via WhatsApp, even with the less expensive plan. Passengers who pay for a Carnival Cruise Wi-Fi plan in advance of sailing get a 15% discount.

But perhaps the biggest development in cruise internet costs in recent years is that many higher-end lines have begun offering internet access for — get this — free. Viking , Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Silversea Cruises are among lines now including unlimited internet time in the base cost of a voyage. At some of these lines, such as Regent, you can pay extra for faster service.

Another way to get free or cheaper internet time on ships is to join cruise line loyalty programs . Many offer free cruise Wi-Fi or discounted package pricing to customers who hit mid- to upper-tier levels.

At Celebrity Cruises, for instance, the top Zenith tier in the line's Captain's Club loyalty program comes with unlimited free Premium-level internet (the fastest plan at the line). At Princess Cruises , customers can get 50 percent off MedallionNet internet packages after reaching the Platinum level in the line's Captain's Circle loyalty program (to qualify, you'll need to complete either five cruises, or 50 cruise days).

On Royal Caribbean, the path to free Internet on a cruise is through its high-end suites . Book a room in a Sky Class or Star Class suite (all suites above the junior suite level), and you'll receive free Voom.

Apps offer an alternative to paid cruise Wi-Fi

In recent years, a growing number of cruise lines have rolled out free apps for your phone that will let you make reservations for onboard restaurants, spa treatments and other services without ever leaving your pool deck lounge chair. On some ships operated by Carnival, you even can order beer and pizza to wherever you happen to be using an app.

Many of these apps also will show you a schedule of daily activities, offer ship deck plans and sometimes port maps to help you get around, and let you check your onboard account statement in real time. On Celebrity Edge and other Celebrity Cruises Edge-class ships, you can even use an app to remotely open your cabin door, change channels on the television and turn off the lights.

While all these apps work off cruise ship Wi-Fi, the good news is they don't require the purchase of a plan to use. Nor do they come with any other sort of fee — at least for most features.

At Carnival, you'll pay $5 per cruise to add a "chat" feature to the line's otherwise free HUB app that will let you communicate via text-like messages with other app-enabled passengers. Norwegian Cruise Line also requires passengers to pay a fee (currently $9.95 per cruise) to use a messaging and calling feature of its Cruise Norwegian app.

Cruise internet tip: Use airplane mode to avoid unwanted charges

Whether or not you're purchasing a Wi-Fi plan on a cruise ship, I have one very strong piece of advice: Put your phone in airplane mode the moment you step on board the vessel and leave it that way for the duration of the sailing.

This is the safest way to avoid unwanted data charges, which can be enormous. (Remember the story of a family that racked up $14,000 in data charges on a cruise?)

As many cruisers have found the hard way, international phone plans such as AT&T's $10-a-day International Day Pass do not apply to cruise ships at sea. If you let your AT&T phone roam while you're on a vessel, you'll pay $2.05 per megabyte of data — even if your base plan at home offers you unlimited data. You'll also pay $3 per minute to make a call, $0.50 per text and $1.30 to send a photo. All that adds up very quickly.

carnival cruise wifi fee

AT&T does offer a " Cruise Plus " plan for a flat fee of $100 that allows unlimited talk and text during sailings up to 30 days in duration. But it only comes with 1 gigabyte of data (which may seem like a lot until you start streaming movies), with any overage billing at a still-hefty $10 per 100 megabytes. It's also not available on every ship. More than 175 vessels are part of the program.

If you insist on leaving your cellular service on during a cruise, you should at least disable any apps running in the background (as they'll be eating up data, and running up your bill) and disable email auto-check.

Personally, I find it easier to just hit the airplane mode button. Once in airplane mode, I reactivate the Wi-Fi feature on my phone to access the cruise Wi-Fi, and sign up for a shipboard plan that will let me stay in touch by email or a VoIP service like WhatsApp.

Carnival Cruise Line WiFi Prices and Plans Detailed

Picture of Doug Parker

  • July 10, 2018

The folks at Carnival Cruise Line know that many passengers need the internet, whether on vacation or not.

It might be great if we could all disconnect when we set sail, but some of us can’t… and most of us won’t. So, every ship in the fleet is outfitted with wireless internet, which can be purchased.

But how much will it cost and what are the various packages? That’s what nearly every cruiser wants to know, and that’s what we’re here today to answer.

carnival cruise wifi plans

When the internet was first rolled out on cruise ships in the early 2000s, guests had to go to a workstation — usually, a bank of computers set just off the atrium — in order to access the web.

Back then, there was almost always a full-time employee of the satellite company, which provided internet access to assist you with getting online and any billing discrepancies.

These days, connecting to the internet is far simpler, and it’s almost hard to imagine a time when we couldn’t just pop open our laptop on the balcony of our stateroom and check our email or use our smartphone to make everyone back home jealous with a few great selfies.

So let’s dive in and discuss what you need to know about accessing the web — and how much it will cost — during your next cruise on a Carnival ship.

Note: This article was originally published in July 2018. It was updated in December 2023.

Carnival Cruise Internet Pricing and Packages

Carnival cruise line ship

There are three different internet packages for you to choose from while onboard. Which one is best for you will depend entirely on what you’re looking to do. Some people just want to check Facebook and send out tweets, while others want to watch movies or Skype with the office.

Remember that all internet plans are offered at a reduced rate if you purchase them before your cruise. In order to do so, all you need to do is sign onto your account at Carnival.com and click on the Cruise Manager page.

You can also head to Carnival.com/FunShops and find information on internet packages there. If you’d rather wait to buy until you’re on board — which will cost you more than you’ll pay if you pre-purchase — you can do so through the HUB app.

As we discuss the various programs and pricing options, note that all prices are listed in US dollars. The pricing we discuss here will be the pre-cruise cost.

Breakdown of Carnival WiFi Plans

As of December 8, 2023, the Social Plan is $15.30 per day, allowing unlimited access to the most popular social networking sites. This is for people who want to use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Messenger, Snapchat, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, and similar websites/apps.

You’re also able to access airline apps to check in for your flight. Some of the airline applications currently supported are American, Delta, Southwest, United, Spirit, Southwest, Air Canada, Allegiant, Hawaii Airlines, and West Jet.

This plan is good for the basic internet user. It can be used on multiple devices, but only by signing out on one before signing in on another. But if little Johnny and Susie are both going to want to be on their phones at the same time, you’ll need separate plans.

As of December 8, 2023, the Value Plan is $19.95 per day and gives you access to all the social sites mentioned above, plus email, online banking, news, lifestyle, sports, and weather websites. Neither the value nor social plans provide access to streaming of any kind.

This plan is good for the moderate internet user looking to stay connected via social media while also perusing the web.

The Premium Plan starts at $21.25 per day and offers social and value plans and internet streaming. Carnival boasts that this plan is three times faster than the value plan and lets you use Skype, Zoom, and Teams video calling.

I’ve also used Facebook Video and FaceTime with this plan, and it worked well when not many people were on. 11 p.m. to 8 a.m. seemed the optimal time for video streaming. This plan is a good choice for someone who needs to be fully connected or has to work on vacation.

How strong a signal you get on the various plans can vary greatly from ship to ship. For instance, Carnival Vista and Carnival Horizon have upgraded bandwidth to allow more people to surf and stream video.

When I sailed Carnival Magic in early 2018, the WiFi was awful. Even on the Premium Plan, it was pulling only around .04 Mbps. (For those of you who aren’t technically minded, suffice it to say it was really slow.)

All about the Carnival HUB App

carnival hub app

In 2015, Carnival Cruise Line launched the HUB app, which allowed guests to get online and do basic things like read an electronic version of the Fun Times, check their account balance, and see what the weather was like in their ports of call.

Now, however, the functionality of the app has been vastly approved, allowing guests to do things such as:

  • Complete cruise check-in
  • Begin the mandatory muster drill
  • Order food for delivery to most spots on the ship
  • Read restaurant menus and make dining reservations
  • View ship maps
  • Chat with cruise companions
  • Purchase things such as shore excursions, drink packages, and wifi packages

READ MORE: Review: Does Carnival Mardi Gras Live Up To The Hype?

The app is currently available to download from the Google Play Store and iTunes. It is suggested that guests download the app before they get on the ship in order to avoid being charged huge fees by their cell phone service provider during their sailing.

Passengers do not need to purchase internet to use the app.

How fast is the internet?

Carnival Horizon speed test

Right off the bat, know this: the cruise ship is receiving the internet signal via satellite. What does that mean? Well, the ship is constantly moving, so the signal is being transmitted to a moving target.

How fast the internet is while you’re on board will depend on several factors, including the ship’s itinerary, how many of your fellow passengers are also trying to access the signal, and — perhaps most importantly — which plan you purchased.

It’s safe to say that you won’t usually enjoy the same internet speeds you have back home. (Unless, of course, you have a crappy provider back home.)

However, if you’re trying to do everyday things like check Facebook, send an email (without a lot of attachments), or load a weather app, you’ll be fine. Heavier-loading websites and smartphone apps may require a bit of patience.

Can I call home?

If you have the Premium Plan, you will be able to call home using a voice or video app such as FaceTime audio, Skype, or WhatsApp. If your phone has a WiFi-enabled calling and texting feature, you can also use that if you have purchased the Premium Plan.

I use T-Mobile, and the first thing I do when I get onto the ship is put my phone on airplane mode.

I then turn on the T-Mobile WiFi so that when my phone is connected to the ship’s internet system, it will essentially function as a regular phone. WiFi calling does not use cell phone data, merely the internet. AT&T also offers WiFi calling.

Carnival WiFi Tips and Tricks

  • Purchase the plan before you leave to save money (around 15%).
  • Each plan will allow you to use as many devices as you like, but only one at a time. So, if several people share the plan, only one can be logged onto a device at any time.
  • If you go to log in and someone else is already on the plan, it will ask you if you’d like to kick them off in order to gain access. On the plus side, if Mom or Dad wants to use the internet, they can easily boot their Twitter-obsessed kids off.
  • The website says that streaming services such as Netflix and Spotify aren’t able to be accessed, but I was able to use Amazon Music during my workouts without any issues.
  • If you figure a cruise is the perfect time to binge-watch something from Netflix, download the series before you leave home. Even if, by some chance, you were able to get it to work on board, the streaming would be as slow as molasses.
  • The $5 chat feature is a super-affordable way to stay connected with your travel companions during the cruise. You can purchase it once you’re onboard, and it will be billed directly to your Sail & Sign account.
  • If you’re having internet issues of any kind, take your device to guest services and dispute the charges. They’ll usually refund your money if you can prove that your device is not connecting.

Going on a cruise offers a delightful escape from everyday life, yet in our digitally connected world, staying in touch with friends, family, or even work can be crucial.

Whether you’re sharing those stunning ocean views on social media, catching up on emails, or simply browsing the internet to plan what you’re going to do in your next port, having access to WiFi on board a Carnival Cruise can be handy.

Unlike your regular mobile data plan, which may not work in the middle of the ocean and potentially incur hefty roaming fees, onboard WiFi provides a seamless and convenient way to stay connected.

Carnival Cruise’s internet service stands out in the cruising world, offering tailored packages that cater to different needs – from basic social media browsing to more comprehensive web access.

An elderly couple joyfully using a smartphone together on a cruise ship, with the woman laughing and the man smiling broadly, both casually dressed and enjoying their time at sea.

In this article, I’ll go into the specifics of Carnival’s WiFi options, detailing the costs and what each package entails.

Overview of Carnival Cruise WiFi Costs

WiFi plans on Carnival cruises range from $12.75 to $22 per day, depending on the package you choose and whether you pre-book it before you set sail. Purchase your plan before the cruise to enjoy a 15% discount.

Note that you must buy an internet package for the entire duration of your cruise. This means you can’t just purchase WiFi for specific days while onboard.

Breaking Down Carnival’s WiFi Costs

Let’s break down the cost of WiFi on a Carnival cruise. The Social WiFi plan costs $12.75 daily if you purchase it before your cruise. The price increases to $15 if you buy it later. The Value WiFi plan is $17 per day when bought before the cruise and $20 per day when purchased onboard.

The Premium WiFi plan will cost you $18.70 per day if you buy it before your cruise and $22 per day if you purchase it onboard. Therefore, if you’re planning a 7-day cruise, your total cost for a pre-purchased Carnival WiFi package can range from $89.25 to $126.

The Social WiFi Plan

The Social WiFi plan is designed for those mainly using social media apps and websites. With this plan, you can access popular platforms like Facebook, X, Instagram, Linkedin, Messenger, WhatsApp, Pinterest, TikTok, and Snapchat. You can also use major airline websites to check your flight statuses. However, you should know that other sites and apps are blocked under this plan.

The Value WiFi Plan

The Value WiFi plan offers unrestricted access to most websites. You can use the package to check your email, keep up with the news headlines, and do online banking.

This plan won’t let you stream music or videos or make WiFi calls on platforms like Skype or Zoom. So, this plan will not allow you to use streaming apps like Netflix and Spotify or engage in video conferencing on apps like Zoom and Teams.

The Premium WiFi Plan

If you’re looking for the highest tier of internet access on your Carnival Cruise, the Premium WiFi Plan is your best bet. This plan offers high-speed internet access, perfect for video or music streaming. It even supports video call services like Skype, Zoom, and Teams, allowing you to stay connected with loved ones or attend essential meetings from the sea.

It’s important to note that connection speeds and reliability vary across select ships. And remember, there’s no refund for weak connections as long as the service is accessible.

Deciding on the Most Suitable Internet Plan

Selecting the ideal internet plan for your cruise may appear challenging, but the right information can make this easier. Evaluate your requirements. Do you need a constant connection, or is occasional access okay? Technically, you could buy an internet package for every device, but it can get very expensive quickly.

However, sharing internet access across multiple devices is a way to save money. This way, when one person is done using the internet, another person can log in using their device. This method requires coordination, but it can be a cost-effective way of managing internet usage on your cruise.

Purchasing Carnival Internet Plans

You can purchase your plan before your cruise or once you’re on board. If you buy the package in advance, you can enjoy a 15% discount off the regular price, so consider your internet needs and budget before deciding on the right plan for you.

How to Access the Internet on a Cruise Ship

For seamless internet access during your cruise, consider purchasing a WiFi plan in advance. This can easily be done through Carnival’s website. Simply visit c, navigate to the ‘Manage’ tab, and select ‘My Booking’. Remember to complete your purchase by midnight Eastern Time the day before your departure to ensure you’re all set for your trip.

A person's hands are shown typing on a laptop that displays the Carnival Cruise Line online check-in page, indicating a user engaging with the Carnival VIFP Club's website to manage their booking.

Once on board, connecting is straightforward. Open the WiFi settings on your device, select “Carnival WiFi” or a network name that resembles the ship’s name, and sign in using your folio number and birthdate.

Useful Information About the Carnival Hub App

The Carnival Hub App is a handy tool that provides helpful information for your cruise journey. You can access it via WiFi-enabled devices. Just connect to the Carnival WiFi network and open an Internet browser.

The Hub app details the ship’s numerous activities, food and beverage offerings, entertainment options, and more.

Speed and Reliability of Internet on Carnival Cruises

Manage your expectations when it comes to the speed and reliability of the internet on Carnival Cruises. While the cruise line aims to provide the best possible internet speeds, the ship’s location and the number of users can affect the connection. Despite these factors, many passengers find the internet access adequate for their needs, especially with the Premium WiFi Plan.

On the right side, details of the Wi-Fi plan are visible, stating "Premium Wi-Fi Plan Starting at $21.25/person per day" with options to "Add to cart" and additional information such as "Full Cruise" and "No Minimum Age." There are also buttons for "Share" and "Favorite."

Blocked Websites on Carnival WiFi

On a Carnival Cruise, you must know that not all websites are accessible via their WiFi service. Even with the premium package plans, certain websites are blocked. It’s because of legal and ethical considerations.

For example, adult websites are blocked on all plans. Carnival Cruise is committed to maintaining a family-friendly environment. Blocking such sites ensures that no children accidentally stumble upon inappropriate content. It also helps maintain a comfortable atmosphere for all passengers.

Furthermore, certain gambling sites are also blocked. This is because gambling isn’t legal in all jurisdictions, making navigating international waters tricky. Instead of dealing with these complications, Carnival Cruise has opted to block these sites altogether. Remember these restrictions when planning your online activities aboard the ship.

Sharing Your Internet Plan

You can share your internet plan across devices on a Carnival Cruise. You can only connect one device at a time. If you want to switch devices, you’ll need to disconnect whatever’s connected before connecting the other device. Use that to optimise your internet usage without purchasing additional plans for each device.

A couple takes a selfie on a Carnival cruise ship, with the man playfully raising his hand and the woman posing confidently, both in bright tropical attire against the serene backdrop of the open sea.

Is Carnival WiFi Worth the Cost?

Whether Carnival’s WiFi service is worth the cost depends on your needs and usage. If you plan on spending most of your time exploring the ship or participating in onboard activities, you may not need much internet access. However, if you know you’ll want to stay connected with friends and family back home, then it might be worthwhile.

Also, consider the internet connection’s availability when the ship is docked. Sometimes, you can get a 4G or 5G connection on your phone, but check for roaming charges. Some ports also offer free WiFi, which could offset the cruise’s internet service cost.

Concluding Thoughts

While Carnival’s WiFi may not be as fast as your home internet, it’s reliable enough for basic browsing, using apps like WhatsApp, and even video chatting. Plus, the ability to purchase a plan that suits your needs adds flexibility and convenience.

The cruise industry continues to evolve, and Carnival Cruise Line’s onboard WiFi offerings are a testament to that. So, weigh the costs and benefits, consider these cruise tips, and make an informed decision that best suits your needs.

Internet Cafe / Wireless Internet Services (Wi-Fi)

Yes! Satellite Internet access is available via WiFi throughout the vessel (including your cabin) and in the Internet Café.

Internet Café

The Internet Café is open 24-hours and features individual terminals for your privacy. For your convenience, the Internet Café Manager is available for assistance during posted hours.

Internet Café terminals run on Windows XP and are limited to Internet communication. Terminals are equipped with Microsoft Office readers only, not full versions of these programs (WORD, EXCEL, etc); most files can be accessed as “read only” for viewing purposes but cannot be edited or saved. Please note, on your personal laptop you can read, edit and save files without restrictions according to the programs installed.

Wireless Users – Laptops and other WiFi equipped devices

Got a laptop, an iPad, or a netbook? Got 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless capability (that's just geek speak for WiFi)? The Wireless Internet Service is compatible with a Wireless 802.11b card, which is the industry standard. You may use your personal laptop while onboard, your iPhone and all other WiFi equipped devices and most software installed on them without restrictions. VPN access on the other hand is restricted to connections of the type, which are not IPSec or PPTP connections. Kindly discuss your VPN limitations with your company’s IT department if you are planning to work while sailing. We are not able to change your settings onboard.

Pricing plans vary by ship based on itinerary. Some ships offer pay as you go per minute rates and bundled time plans. Others have daily and per cruise plans. The full list of available pricing options are available online before you go via Cruise Manager or via the HUB App once on board the ship. Please consult the internet login screen or request information at Guest Services. Internet plans can be used on multiple devices (only a single device can be logged on at any one time). Instructions on how to create an account and pricing details are present on-screen in the Internet Café or on your laptop once you connect to Carnival WiFi. Internet pricing is identical, whether you are using the Internet Café terminals, your own laptop or other wireless devices. All Internet charges will be billed directly to your onboard “Sail & Sign” account.

Before You Go

Get the most from your cruise Internet time and your trip — make sure you're powered up and prepared before you board the ship with this handy pre-cruise checklist. Here are a few things you want to remember to pack for your cruise:

• WiFi enabled laptop and mobile devices

• Power supply for each of the devices you are bringing with you

• A charged battery for your trip to the ship

• Data cables to transfer pictures

• Headphones

• Laptop privacy screens

Best Practices

• Email – Convert your email settings to basic; you will have a better experience with less graphic intense content. Most email providers have a lite version of their service optimized for low-bandwidth users.

• Mobile websites – most websites nowadays offer a mobile interface; they are leaner, less graphic intense alternatives to their main page. Mobile pages load quicker via the leaner bandwidth available onboard and can be accessed regardless of your device: laptop, smart phone, tablet etc. A few examples:

• Apps – consider using apps; they are tailored for your device and will improve your online experience

• Browsers – Experiment with alternate browsers for a faster experience: Chrome, Opera, Safari, Mozilla, Firefox

• Remember to log out

• Disconnect from WiFi - develop the habit of disconnecting from WiFi when ending your Internet session; leaving your device connected may slow other users’ Internet speed

• Words associated with leaner content = faster loading time: mobile, text only, lite, no media, low resolution

• Discuss VPN limitations with your company’s IT department prior to cruising; onboard personnel are not able to change your settings onboard.

So after spending 20 minutes on hold with carnival, I decided to turn to these forums. All I wanna know is what Internet plan for purchase will allow me to text from my phone. And I don’t mean with someone else on the ship I mean someone Not on the ship.

Texting is through your phone carrier. It isn't through WiFi. There are exceptions, like WhatsApp and I think an iPhone has a texting feature that might work on WiFi (sorry, I'm an Android Geek, an iPhone idiot), but as a general rule, texting is using your phone (cell connection) and will cost you $ while on the ship. Some cell phone carriers have plans that will charge you by the text. Your question is really more of a cell phone carrier question than it is a Carnival question.

Having said all that, I purchased the highest internet plan last fall. I have Verizon. About 1/2 way through my cruise all of the sudden I started receiving texts through WiFi, while my phone was on AIRPLANE mode. That was about six months ago, I came home and researched it and found that it HAS happened before, to Verizon users while in AIRPLANE mode, but it isn't supposed to happen and I darn sure wouldn't count on it. It didn't work the first half of the cruise.

It might be easier for you to message via the Book of Faces instead of texting, if the person you need to text has that access. Or look into finding a WiFi messaging type program similar to WhatsApp.

Do not plan on texting. Unless you like to pay $$$ for every text. Use the app.

Saint Greg

If you are texting iPhone to iPhone, iMessage works over wifi and reportedly works with the social media plan which is the cheapest plan.

I have been able to call and text over WiFi using android phones from cruise ships and other areas where I don't get service (we live in the middle of nowhere). I could do it with my old LG G3 almost a year ago and in November with my Samsung Galaxy Note 8. I was able to call and text my husband (also an android device) who was with me on the November trip and was home when I cruised in April '17. It's an easy way to keep in touch. We called my mom who has an iPhone a few times while we were on the Vista in November so our son could tell her about his day.

Maybe it only works for Verizon phones because that's what we all have. Just make sure you have your phone in airplane mode and use WiFi only.

I forgot to mention above that we used the value internet plan.

To jump in here, I see your signature says you have an Iphone. You have a wifi calling feature in your settings. Turn it on. You'll find it in Settings then "phone." You'll see a "wifi calling" prompt. Turn it on. It will ask you to fill in an address. This is for 911 service. Simply enter your home address. It is now activated and you can use your phone when in "wifi calling" mode just like you are at home. You can use it for texts or phone calls. To make sure the phone biases to "wifi calling" on the ship, turn it into "airplane mode" and turn the "wifi" on and hook up to the internet You will shortly see in the upper left corner where your carrier is displayed "[carrier]wifi." For example, ATT says "ATTwifi." Verizon says "VZWwifi" etc. You are now good to go. You can text any number or call any number that your plan allows, even if they are on the ship with you for no charge, just like you are at home. If you call a foreign number you'll be charged your plan's rate for foreign calls, but if you call a domestic number, no matter where you are or where the phone you call is, it is charged just as if you are at your home. This also works in any foreign country as long as you are on wifi and it's displayed as your carrier.

Androids also are capable of wifi calling, but I don't know how to turn it on. Hope this helps.

P.S. BE SURE YOU HAVE "DATA ROAMING" TURNED OFF!!! This will prevent any data downloads while the phone is roaming. If you are only using wifi calling then keep the phone in airplane mode.

If you mean Carnival Internet Plans, I don't know the answer to that. I've only used it on Royal Caribbean and it worked great. We had our whole family, 6 adults and 5 kids on Oasis of the Seas. Since we were in suites, we all had individual VOOM plans and we were all able to phone or text each other while on the ship with no problem. I would assume that if your phone will show "[carrier]wifi" i.e. "ATTwifi" in the carrier spot, then it'll work. If it won't pick it up then it won't work. But to be honest, I don't know. Looking at Carnival's plans, I would not be surprised that it won't work on the "social" plan as that plan says it'll cut out most apps. But if you're only sending a text, who knows? I would think that the texting ability would work on at least the Value plan. Not sure if you could phone on the Value plan. If you can upgrade packages on board, you might be able to try the cheaper one and see if it works, and if not, then upgrade to the one that does.

We have a Samsung 7 via Verizon and leave phone in airplane mode all the time.

Every once in awhile we start getting texts. Does not happen all the time when we are out of the country but rather often.

No idea why and have never been charged for international texts but nice when it happens.

It is nice to find someone else it happened to! I was shocked to get them, as it was my work who was actually texting me - I have found that I can't hide, even on vacation!

The Carnival website says none of their three Inet plans allow for 'wifi calling'; meaning taking and making calls, sending and getting text messages through wifi instead via cell signal. Check your carrier for texting on cruise ships; T-mobile users get text messages for free on ships, and cost $0.50 to send each text message. I forward my cell number to my home phone, (which emails me any voicemails), and stay connected to the ships' cell service so I can get my text messages.

We used Facebook messenger to stay in touch with Family on the ship and at ports (restaurant/bar wifi)

I have been able to use facebook chat functions using the carnival WiFi

I did too - but it was very sporadic. If I needed it for work I wouldn't trust it.

for me, part of the fun is DISCONNECTING - but I understand if you can't. i purchased the cheapest wi fi plan. the most successful app I was able to use was Facebook Messenger.

lostsoulcruiser

Apple and later model Android phones will allow texts thru WiFi. We purchased the middle priced plan on our last cruise. We could communicate via text with any FB friend (Messenger app) at no extra charge. One of our dinner friends had an iPhone and calling via WiFi.

MrsKC08

WhatsApp allows wifi texting as well, but the other person you are texting has to have that app as well.

mara93

I have T-Mobile & have been able to text from every location I've visited, including Russia last summer.

If you don't have a plan as flexible as T-Mobile's, look into an app such as Whatsapp or FB Messenger.

The above will work if everyone you are texting has an iPhone. If anyone with an android is involved, you will both need to download WhatsApp, the texting app. Carnival's website says the Social Media plan (the cheapest) works with this as well as iMessage.

Had the wifi package on the Breeze ,, Did not work by day 3 they were refunding everyone's money

If I just keep my phone on, will I be able to text and call and just incur roaming charges? I can get a limited international plan but will it work at sea?

That's why Saint Greg specified "texting iPhone to iPhone" in regards to iMessage. Also, Carnival's FAQ's specifically state iMessage is not supported under the Social plan. Reports very, though. For some, it's been pretty reliable. For others, off & on. Whatsapp isn't the only one supported. Fb messenger and snapchat are named as well. There are others that will work, too.

Yes, I wasn't saying that Saint Greg wasn't clear. I was just giving an option for Android users as well that doesn't involve Social Media (like FB and Snapchat) because not everyone has those or trusts those. WhatsApp is just a texting app. It is definitely not the only option but it was my opinion.

Carnival Cruise Line increases gratuity, Wi-Fi charges (and it's not the only one)

Portrait of Nathan Diller

Travelers sailing with Carnival Cruise Line can expect to pay steeper fees in the coming months. The cruise line is increasing charges for both gratuities and Wi-Fi, a spokesperson told USA TODAY on Wednesday.

Onboard gratuities will increase from $14.50 per person, per day to $16 for guests in standard accommodations, beginning April 1. For those in suites, the price will increase from $16.50 per day for each guest to $18.

"Our shipboard team members work hard to provide exceptional service and the friendly, welcoming, and outstanding work of Carnival crew is widely recognized across the industry and amongst cruise fans," Carnival Cruise spokesperson Matt Lupoli said in an emailed statement. "We believe our guests will agree this slight increase is well-deserved."

He noted that although gratuities are automatically added to travelers' onboard accounts, they can adjust the amount as they wish. Once a passenger disembarks, the charges are considered final, according to Carnival's website .

Guests who are booked to sail with the line can prepay their gratuities online before April 1 at the current price, Lupoli said.

Carnival will also increase the cost of Wi-Fi on its ships beginning Friday. The line's Social internet plan will increase from $10.20 to $12.75, while its Value plan will jump from $14.45 to $17. The Premium plan will also increase from $17 to $22.

Have other cruise lines increased their gratuity prices?

Yes. Carnival's fee hikes follow similar moves from lines such as Princess Cruises and Holland America Line, which said they would increase their gratuity prices  (all three lines are part of Carnival Corp.).

The changes come as a number of lines, including Carnival and Norwegian Cruise Line, have also increased fees for amenities such as beverage packages and signature restaurants in the wake of high inflation  during the industry's continued recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic .

Is Amazon's Prime Day deal on Carnival cruises worth it?

carnival cruise wifi fee

'The discount you see might not be the vacation you want,' one travel adviser tells MarketWatch

Among the flashy deals during Amazon's July 16-17 Prime Day sale, one might look extra appealing to a growing crowd of cruise enthusiasts: the up to 40% discount on select Carnival Cruise Line trips.

But should travelers jump on it?

Cruise lines are feeling the love from American travelers in 2024. Never before has demand for cruises been this high: Cruise companies such as Norwegian (NCLH) and Carnival (CCL) have reported record bookings as families and solo traverlers alike are rushing to the sea after a pandemic-induced hiatus, travel advisers told MarketWatch.

"It's insane," said Lisa Rubin Reich, a travel adviser and the owner of Majestic Getaway, a travel agency based in South Florida. The recent demand surge was new to Reich, who has 11 years of experience booking and advising travelers. "It used to be [that] we would tell people to start booking six months before," she said. "Now, you've got to get in over a year before or the space is going to be gone."

But the increased demand makes sense to travel advisers like Reich. Cruises are an easy and fun vacation, and they can be relatively budget-friendly for those who want to pay a set price for meals, entertainment, accommodations and activities. "It's so easy when you are on a cruise - it's brainless," she said.

Families can spend time together but also choose their own activities, Reich added: One person can be in a sauna and the other can be in the pool, and at the end of the day, they can meet up for dinner. And this all takes place while the cruise ship makes its way to a new location.

Now, not only are more first-time cruise passengers booking, but travelers are also more open to booking longer cruises. Reich said she had recently sold two 18-day cruise trips over the course of a week; in the past, she seldom sold trips longer than seven or eight days.

Heightened enthusiasm for cruises also stems from people placing a greater value on travel postpandemic, said Mel Burton, coordinator and cruise expert at CruCon Cruise Outlet, a cruise agency. "People feel a sense of eagerness to get out and move beyond their four walls," she said.

Standing in between Americans and their travel dreams are concerns about money and debt. More than one-third of respondents to a Bankrate survey earlier this year said they were willing to take on debt to travel this summer, and a separate WalletHub survey this month found that nearly half of respondents were still paying off credit-card debt from the previous summer.

Carnival Cruise Line hosts different sales of up to 40% off throughout July, including a three-day sale for last-minute bookers. The sale, launched on Prime Day but not exclusive to Prime members, focuses on cruises within 2024. Shoppers can book trips to the Bahamas as early as late July. Other destinations include Mexico and the Caribbean. For a three-day trip to the Bahamas in summer, depending on the trip time, the sales price is from $344 and up per person for an interior room, and from close to $600 and up for a balcony room.

But travel and cruise experts said it's best to look carefully at deals on cruises - including the Prime Day discount on Carnival cruises and Carnival's limited-time deal. Chasing deals can lead to disappointment if travelers don't pay close enough attention to a deal's terms and conditions.

Amazon (AMZN) did not immediately respond to MarketWatch's request for comment.

Here's what to know if you are thinking about booking a discounted cruise trip.

'The bargain you see might not be the vacation you want'

Don't be too dazzled by the 40% discount, travel experts said. It's important to know exactly what services are included with the deal, Burton noted. Plus, cruise lines have ongoing sales all year round, and many variables can impact prices.

Cruise prices are like a roller coaster, Burton said, meaning they go up and down frequently. "Most people never actually know where we are on the track," she said. "I'm not romanced by [the 40% discount] like somebody who is maybe a new cruiser."

A cruise trip, when done right, can be a budget-friendly option compared with the alternatives, travel advisers said. But the pricing and booking process is far more complicated than the average traveler might imagine.

"The bargain you see might not be the vacation you want," said Jennifer Klaussen, a travel adviser and the owner of Sundari Travel. Regardless of the cruise line, the cheapest price or the steepest discount are usually for the "absolute worst" room or trip option, with no amenities or service add-ons, she said. It's also very likely the discounted rooms are at the front of the ship, she added, which experiences more movement from the water and can be tough for people prone to motion sickness.

Pricing can also vary widely depending on the size and location of a room, among other factors. Even a balcony or oceanview room, which is typically what most travelers want, can come at 25 different price points, Klaussen said.

Don't just skim the terms of the discount, according to Laney Sachs, a travel adviser and the owner of New York City-based Ortensia Blu Travel Adventures. "Read everything - from big print [to] fine print and asterisk," she told MarketWatch. For example, someone who books a discounted oceanview cabin might find that their assigned room comes with an obstructed view - a caveat that may have been included in the terms and conditions.

A Carnival representative said travelers are welcome to do research about their ship before booking - adding that the booking process is transparent and guests can view the deck plans of each ship, as well as photos of the rooms, on the company's website. There are "a range of itineraries and a multitude of choices for accommodations," the representative told MarketWatch in an email. "There's something for everyone no matter age, interests or price point."

Extras are costly

Heavily discounted cruises often come with minimal offerings, and it's not uncommon that someone ends up "tripling or quadrupling" the discounted price once they finish customizing their trip experience, Klaussen said.

Enjoying a drink while relaxing poolside, joining a hike offered through shore excursions, or watching a movie under the stars on a rooftop movie theater all could be a great time - but such activities typically aren't included in a discounted cruise price, travel advisers said.

"All of these extras are costly," said Lee Lennon, a travel adviser and the owner of Miami-based Travel by Design.

It's essential to figure out what's included in a cruise deal and what isn't. Are the meals all paid for? Are drinks included? What about gratuities and other experiences?

The good news is that taxes and fees such as port expenses are no longer surprise charges. In response to California's Honest Pricing Law, which went into effect at the beginning of the month, cruise lines have changed the way they advertise prices in order to reflect the full expense including taxes and fees. Because all major cruise lines advertise in California, they have changed their price-transparency policies nationwide to meet the requirements and avoid confusion.

What to consider before booking a cruise

For first-time cruisegoers - and even those with moderate experience - the biggest obstacle to booking a dream cruise vacation is not knowing the questions they can or should ask before booking, travel advisers said.

For example, travelers might not think to ask about the cruise ship's model and the last time it was renovated. "Maybe it's a great ship but it hasn't been remodeled - it's tired and old now," Reich said.

While many people might focus on a low price, Belmont said she would make the calculation the other way around - by first asking for someone's maximum budget and their top priorities for the trip, and then looking for value-adding packages that can enhance their trip experience.

If you're determined to make your own cruise reservation, here are some factors to consider before booking, according to travel advisers:

The dates and duration of your trip: When can you travel, and for how long? Do you have a passport that will be valid for at least six months after your planned return date? Are you planning to go during a school vacation? During school holidays like spring and summer break, cruise trips can be pricier and more crowded on board, said Céleste Auger-Munshi, a travel adviser and the owner of Indulgent Voyages, based in Ocala, Fla.

Your travel companions: Who will you be traveling with - family, friends, a partner or on your own? Do you want to be surrounded by party people or a quiet, reserved crowd? Are you looking for an adults-only or family-friendly experience? Do you prefer a large cruise with up to 7,000 people or a smaller ship?

Activities and destination: Do you want a quiet, relaxing time or a packed schedule? Which activities appeal to you - shopping, fine dining or a spa day, for example - and can the cruise line you've picked deliver them? What's more important to you: your experience aboard the ship or the cruise destination?

Buyer Beware

First, a word to the wise: As just about every  frugal traveler  knows, sometimes deals really are too good to be true…or at least not all they’re cracked up to be. It’s important to read the fine print and be sure of what’s included and not included in cruise deals you may find.

When considering the cheapest way to cruise, you’ll want to think about airfare, meals, excursions, room type and location, and other amenities that can lead to upcharges. That way, you can budget appropriately and make sure you have enough money in your  travel fund  to ensure you can afford your trip.

You’ll also want to pay close attention to cancellation policies. Many people plan trips far in advance, and situations can change between the time you book and the time you are supposed to board the ship. It can be wise to consider the costs and benefits of trip insurance. Note: Some  credit card travel insurance  may have you covered; check with your card issuer for details.

Next, the money-saving tips.

6. Book Well in Advance…Or Last Minute

Popular cruises, particularly the more luxurious ones, tend to fill up quickly. And the best rates are usually available when tickets first go on sale, which can be as much as a year and a half in advance. The other benefit of booking early is that you’re more likely to get your choice of cabin and dining options. 7. Sail During Shoulder Season

Determining peak cruising season when demand is the highest can be tricky because of all the variables involved. First and foremost (and perhaps most obviously), different parts of the world experience the seasons and corresponding vacations at different times. So peak season in one part of the world may be very different from peak season in another.

Many think that off-peak season, when demand is the lowest, is the best time to find a cruise deal, though that may not always be the case. If a cruise line cuts back on the supply of cruises too much because of seasonal drops in demand, there may not be many deals or even much availability to be found.

That’s why many point to “shoulder season,” the period between the peak and off-peak seasons, as the best time to find deals on cruises. Keep in mind that the weather might not be as great as it is during peak season, but you’re also more likely to avoid crowds both on the boat and on shore excursions. You’ll also want to consider seasonality when looking for the cheapest days to fly to and from your cruise’s point of departure and return.

8. Check for Special Discounts

Factors such as what organizations you’re a member of and where you live can help you lower the price of your dream cruise, whether that means exploring the Mediterranean or waters around Mexico.

You may find that belonging to a group like AARP can score you a cruise discount. In fact, American Express and other card issuers may offer cruise benefits. There may also be general discounts for seniors, military families, teachers, and even frequent cruisers.

You might also be able to take advantage of resident cruise deals if you live in a particular area. Carnival, for example, offers deals to residents of states including Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

<p>Even if you’ve found a fantastic deal on a cruise, vacations are expensive, so it’s important to consider your financial options. If you don’t have the funds to cover the entire cost of the trip, then you may want to consider waiting until you do.</p><p>Keep in mind that if you put the trip on a credit card and carry that balance over from month to month, you’ll be paying relatively high interest rates, perhaps 20% or higher. 9. Pay in Full

Even if you’ve found a fantastic deal on a cruise, vacations are expensive, so it’s important to consider your financial options. If you don’t have the funds to cover the entire cost of the trip, then you may want to consider waiting until you do.

Keep in mind that if you put the trip on a credit card and carry that balance over from month to month, you’ll be paying relatively high interest rates, perhaps 20% or higher. That adds to the cost of the trip significantly, even if you’re using a  cash back rewards credit card .

Some people opt to use  personal loans for vacations , which typically come with lower interest rates than credit cards. But personal loans, though often more affordable than credit cards, aren’t free, and they’ll add to your vacation budget as well.

<p>When planning your cruise, it’s important to drill down and really think through the budget. If you don’t have a truly all-inclusive deal, you’ll want to to itemize everything, such as:</p><ul><li>Cruise tickets</li><li>Flights</li><li>Ground transportation</li><li>Food and drinks</li><li>Excursions</li><li>Souvenirs</li><li>On-ship entertainment</li><li>Gambling</li><li>Pictures</li><li>Travel insurance</li><li>Gratuities</li><li>WiFi</li><li>International calls</li><li>Fees for any <a href="https://www.sofi.com/learn/content/how-to-get-a-visa/">travel visas</a></li><li>Currency exchange</li></ul><p>There are plenty of great budgeting trackers that can help you monitor spending on vacation and more. But when it comes to vacation planning, it’s best to earmark the money before you’ve spent it, add a cushion of 10% or 20% to cover the unexpected, and then stick to it. You’ll enjoy the vacation more knowing that you’ve got it covered and won’t stress out when it’s over because you’ve spent more than you can afford.</p><p>Also don’t forget to see how you might apply your <a href="https://www.sofi.com/learn/content/how-to-maximize-credit-card-rewards/">credit card rewards for travel</a>; you might be able to apply cash back or otherwise lower costs this way.</p>

10. Maintain a Budget

When planning your cruise, it’s important to drill down and really think through the budget. If you don’t have a truly all-inclusive deal, you’ll want to to itemize everything, such as:

  • Cruise tickets
  • Ground transportation
  • Food and drinks
  • On-ship entertainment
  • Travel insurance
  • International calls
  • Fees for any  travel visas
  • Currency exchange

There are plenty of great budgeting trackers that can help you monitor spending on vacation and more. But when it comes to vacation planning, it’s best to earmark the money before you’ve spent it, add a cushion of 10% or 20% to cover the unexpected, and then stick to it. You’ll enjoy the vacation more knowing that you’ve got it covered and won’t stress out when it’s over because you’ve spent more than you can afford.

Also don’t forget to see how you might apply your  credit card rewards for travel ; you might be able to apply cash back or otherwise lower costs this way.
