The Ailey company performs three works by visionary choreographers Jamar Roberts, Hans van Manen, and Alonzo King in a tour de force program of renegade modern dance. With Ode , Jamar Roberts offers a meditation on the beauty and fragility of life in a time of growing gun violence, featuring a score by the illustrious jazz pianist Don Pullen. Legendary Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen divides his dynamic Solo among three dancers in one explosive display of virtuosity and wit. Completing the evening, Alonzo King’s Following the Subtle Current Upstream —abstract and steeped in meaning—finds the Ailey dancers in constant, joyful flow to an eclectic score by Zakir Hussain, Miguel Frasconi, and Miriam Makeba.

This stunning return to BAM’s opera house stage by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater offers a program of signature Ailey works, honoring and celebrating the man who forged a revolutionary path for American dance. Members of Ailey II come together with the Company in Memoria , the choreographer’s heartfelt elegy to his dear friend and colleague Joyce Trisler, while A Song for You takes us on an emotional journey through love and longing, set to Donny Hathaway’s somber tune of the same name. Also included in the program is the tour-de-force solo Cry, created as a birthday present from Ailey to his mother that is dedicated “to all Black women everywhere, especially our mothers.” The evening concludes with the signature masterpiece Revelations , a fervent, transcendent exploration of the soul’s deepest grief and holiest joy.

Lyon Opera Ballet

Oct 19 – 21, 2023.

Lucinda Childs ’s 1979 masterpiece Dance , a renowned collaboration with Philip Glass and Sol LeWitt , is restaged for the peerless dancers of the Lyon Opera Ballet . This exclusive US engagement is presented as part of the Dance Reflections by Van Cleef & Arpels Festival.

Annual Gala Presentation

Nov 1 – 5, 2023

In this brand-new adaptation, directed by  Tony Goldwyn and  Savion Glover , Joey Evans— Ephraim Sykes ( Ain’t Too Proud )—is a Black jazz singer in the 1940s struggling to make it big his way, with his sound, on Chicago’s vibrant nightclub circuit, alongside Loretta Devine ( Dreamgirls ) as Lucille and Aisha Jackson ( Once Upon a One More Time ) as Linda. This  Rodgers and Hart  classic incorporates additional numbers from the duo’s songbook, for a total of over 18 beloved tunes.

Pam Tanowitz | Song of Songs

Nov 9 – 11, 2023.

Direct from its five-star UK run, the New York City premiere of Song of Songs fuses Pam Tanowitz ’s “transparently beautiful” ( Independent ) choreography with Pulitzer Prize winner David Lang ’s “gorgeously clear” ( The New York Times ) choral settings of the Biblical love poem, performed live by six musicians.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater

Nov 29 – dec 31, 2023.

For 65 years, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has showcased the work of diverse choreographers, amplifying a myriad of voices alongside Mr. Ailey’s own. During this milestone anniversary season, City Center’s Resident Dance Company expands on that tradition, presenting a variety of world premieres and new productions to be announced, including Ronald K. Brown ’s Dancing Spirit (2009).  Other highlights include a new Ailey Classics program spanning the breadth of Mr. Ailey’s rich catalog, and performances of his must-see American masterpiece Revelations (with live music on some programs). In a return to pre-pandemic tradition, the magic of Ailey will shine for a full five weeks, giving audiences the opportunity to once again celebrate the holidays with Ailey.

Encores! Once Upon a Mattress

Jan 24 – feb 4, 2024.

Starring musical theater legend Sutton Foster ( The Music Man ) as Princess Winifred and Michael Urie ( Ugly Betty ) as Prince Dauntless, Once Upon a Mattress is the uproarious retelling of Hans Christian Anderson’s “The Princess and the Pea.” Led by Tony-nominated Encores! Artistic Director Lear deBessonet ( Into the Woods , Lionel Bart’s Oliver! ) and with a new concert adaptation by Amy Sherman-Palladino ( The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel ), this musical fairytale promises both classic charms and new delights.

Take your seat at the legendary Jungle Inn nightclub for an electrifying musical telling the story of jazz through its self-proclaimed inventor:  Jelly Roll Morton . Directed by Robert O’Hara ( X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X ) and written by Tony-winner  George C. Wolfe  ( Rustin, Shuffle Along ), Jelly’s Last Jam is set to Morton’s iconic music. Flamenco Festival 2024

Mar 8 – 17, 2024 the national ballet of spain olga pericet gala flamenca.

A two-week extravaganza of music, dance, and unforgettable performances, this year’s festival features the National Ballet of Spain, Premio Nacional de Danza winner Olga Pericet , and  Gala Flamenca , featuring Manuel Liñán, Alfonso Losa, El Yiyo, Paula Comitre, and Sandra Carrasco.

Nederlands Dans Theater

World famous for their theatricality, stunning technique, and unparalleled expression,  Nederlands Dans Theater returns to City Center with a series of works from legendary choreographer William Forsythe,  former NDT dancers Imre van Opstal and Marne van Opstal, and renowned choreographic team Sharon Eyal and Gai Behar.

Dance Theatre of Harlem

Apr 11 – 14, 2024.

Returning to City Center after last year’s successful spring season to celebrate its inaugural year under Artistic Director Robert Garland , Dance Theatre of Harlem once again presents a powerful vision for ballet in the 21st century. The 18-member, multi-ethnic company performs a forward-thinking repertoire that includes treasured classics as well as new works.

Martha Graham Dance Company

Apr 17 – 20, 2024.

In a season entitled American Legacies , the Company explores Martha Graham’s relation to Americana and Modernism through classic works like The Rite of Spring and Appalachian Spring alongside Agnes DeMille ’s 1942 classic Rodeo , and a new work by Jamar Roberts with a commissioned score by Grammy-winning composer Rhiannon Giddens .

Ballet Hispánico

Apr 25 – 28, 2024.

Highlights include the restaging of Mad’moiselle , Annabelle Lopez Ochoa ’s homage to Latina women; and Buscando a Juan , the most recent work by Eduardo Vilaro , and a fun-filled, interactive En Familia Matinee .

Apr 30 – may 12, 2024.

Featuring 27 of Sting ’s most beloved songs, this thrillingly executed new dance-theater sensation by Kate Prince and ZooNation tells an uplifting tale of humanity and hope through world-class contemporary and street dance.

Dance against cancer, may 20, 2024.

Dance Against Cancer will bring the global arts community together to fight cancer with this one-night-only annual performance to benefit the American Cancer Society . Past shows have included performances by the dance world’s brightest stars from New York City Ballet , Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre , American Ballet Theatre , Ballet Hispánico , Martha Graham Dance Company , Jacob Jonas The Company , stars of the Broadway community and more.

Encores! Titanic

Jun 11 – 23, 2024.

An all-star cast sets sail in Titanic , including Chuck Cooper, Eddie Cooper, Andrew Durand, Drew Gehling, Ramin Karimloo, Judy Kuhn, Jose Llana, Bonnie Milligan, Brandon Uranowitz , and Chip Zien . Directed by Anne Kauffman ( The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window ), this nearly sung-through show from creators Maury Yeston ( Grand Hotel ) and Peter Stone ( 1776 ) paints a heartrending portrait of the individuals whose dreams of America were dashed in the Atlantic.

Beyoncé's Mom Tina Knowles Gives Rare Details on Twins Rumi and Sir

Tina knowles shared how beyoncé and jay-z's kids blue ivy carter, 12, as well as twins rumi and sir carter, both 7, are "all artists" in their own right during an exclusive interview with e news..

Tina Knowles is laying her cards down, down, down, down about Beyoncé  and  Jay-Z 's twins.

The fashion designer—who is the mom of the "Texas Hold 'Em" singer—couldn't help but to rave over Rumi Carter and Sir Carter , both 7, as they each continue to develop their own unique passions .

"Rumi is a natural little star," Tina exclusively told E! News' Francesca Amiker Aug. 17 at Debbie Allen , Jordan Cooper and Jack Mizrahi 's Remember My Name Ball, which benefits LGBTQ+ nonprofit Destination Tomorrow, "and Sir is more into books and electronics."

Reflecting on how the twins have hobbies varying from art to science, the 70-year-old continued, "We got them all, raising them up right."

In fact, Tina believes that a budding creative like Rumi will "not be denied" a spot on stage should she follow 12-year-old sister Blue Ivy Carter 's footsteps as a backup dancer for their mom.

"They're all artists," she gushed. "How could they not?"

But Tina noted that her grandkids aren't ones to boast about their gifts, with Blue even making her "swear to secrecy" about her hidden talents on the piano.

Still, the matriarch is "blown away" by the tween, who is costarring alongside Beyoncé in Mufasa: The Lion King .

"She's self-taught and she sounds like a concert pianist," Tina continued. "She paints, she draws, she does poetry. She's just an artistic soul."

She added, "I'm really, really proud of her. I can't wait 'til the world gets to really hear."

And Tina is a huge advocate for the next generation to follow their artistic aspirations. That's why she was thrilled to support the Remember My Name Ball, the annual house-ballroom event that also benefits the Debbie Allen Dance Academy.

"This is just such an important place," Tina told E! at the charity dance. "Debbie Allen—who hasn't grown up just admiring her dance and what she contributes to the culture? So, when she calls me, I'm there!"

A Sweet Feature

Beyoncé featured daughter Rumi Carter on her new country album Cowboy Carter . 

"Protector," the fourth song on the project, begins with Rumi asking, "Mom, can I hear the lullaby, please?" The clip leads into an acoustic ballad reflecting on her deep love for her children.

While pregnant with her twins, the award-winning singer gave an incredible performance at the 2017 Grammys. It's safe to say Rumi and Sir Carter had the best seats in the house!

A month after welcoming her twins, the proud mom took to Instagram to gush over the babies. She wrote , "Sir Carter and Rumi 1 month today."

In July 2022, Beyoncé thanked her kids ahead of her  Renaissance album release.

"I want to give a special thank you to Rumi, Sir and Blue for allowing me the space, creativity, and inspiration," she wrote on her website alongside this photo. "And a special thanks to my husband and muse, who held me down during those late nights in the studio."

The group posed together as The Proud Family for Halloween 2023.

The Houston native flashed a huge smile as she carried her babies.

Rumi joined Bey and Madonna for a backstage tour photo in July 2023 alongside Madonna's daughters Mercy, Stella and Estere.

The twins adorably took a dip in the ocean in matching outfits.

The father-daughter duo looked at the amazing views as they enjoyed a boat ride together.

The "Spirit" singer kicked off 2021 with a sweet video that captured heartwarming moments with her family . "Cheers to a New Year Beyhive," she captioned her Instagram. "2020 divided us and united us. Most could not see loved ones and we felt too many losses, but we were united by our humanity."

To celebrate her 38th birthday, the award-winning singer shared behind-the-scenes pics of how she rang in her special day. In one photo, her kids help her blow out her candles.

The "Black Parade" singer honored her son during the Black Is King visual album, writing, "And to all our sons and daughters, the sun and the moon. Bow for you. You are the keys to the kingdom."

A family affair! Beyoncé struck a pose with her daughters, as well as her mother, Tina Knowles , during the "Brown Skin Girl" music video in Black Is King .

The Nutcracker

In December we present our annual production of the classic Nutcracker ballet. This is a wonderful opportunity for those ballet students who really enjoy performing. Through rehearsing for and performing in the Nutcracker, participants are able to gain an appreciation for the time and effort involved in preparing for a show. Performing with fellow students is an invaluable experience for young dancers, and being part of such a classic tradition will give them fond memories for years to come.

The Nutcracker audition is held annually on the last weekend of August at our Old City studios.  The 15th Annual Nutcracker auditions will be held on Saturday, Aug 24 and Sunday, Aug 25, 2024.

There is one Nutcracker audition.  There are no make-up auditions.  You must attend the in-studio audition to participate in the production. YOU MUST PRE-REGISTER FOR THE AUDITION BY 11:59p AUGUST 15.  This will allow us to plan for spacing of groups. THERE WILL BE A MANDATORY VIRTUAL PARENT MEETING WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 7 at 7:00p.

When is it?

Early to mid-December each year. The 2024 dates are DECEMBER 12-15.  We expect to have 2 casts and 6 performances. Each cast performs three times. Each show lasts about one hour and thirty minutes.

Where is it?

In a local theater. The 2024 performances will be held at the Mandell Theater at Drexel University, 33rd & Chestnut Streets (3220 Chestnut St), Philadelphia, PA.

Who participates?

Students currently enrolled in the Primary and Pre-Professional ballet programs (Ballet 1 and higher) at the Philadelphia Dance Academy are eligible to participate. All Ballet 1/1X dancers need to be at least 6 years old by the audition date to be eligible to participate. The Adult/Teen ballet classes are not eligible to participate.

How much does it cost to participate?

The participation fee is $300 and is automatically charged to the primary credit card on file on the first day of rehearsal. This includes a Nutcracker t-shirt and a digital download of the performance. This does not include any tickets or photographs.

When do students learn the choreography?

The first rehearsal will be Saturday, September 7, 2024 from 10:00a-6:00p.  Students rehearse at our main Old City location on the weekends. Most rehearsals are Saturdays between 1:00pm and 6:30pm. Some groups may rehearse on Sundays.  Most cast members will not need to be there the entire time, just for one or two hours.

How many rehearsals can I miss?

You may miss only one rehearsal, although we would prefer you do not miss rehearsal. This is very important. Young dancers need all their fellow cast members present in order to best learn spacing and choreography.

Dancers may not miss the mandatory dress rehearsals or in-studio run-through .  If you have a conflict for these dates, you should opt out of participating.

What do students have to wear to perform?

We provide all costumes. In addition to these borrowed costumes, students must wear their own nude leotards, footed pink or flesh toned tights, and pink or flesh toned ballet slippers. The tights and shoes should be the same color. 

Other footwear may be required depending on the role. Boys may be required to wear a specific color tights or socks depending on their role.

Is there a dress rehearsal?

Yes. There is a mandatory Dress Rehearsal for each cast, once at the studio and once at the theater venue the week of the show.

How much are tickets to performances?

They are $30-$45 per ticket. They vary in price depending on seat location and go on sale online on October 1.  Performances sell out quickly.

There will be a Cast Member Ticket Pre-Sale on September 29-30.  Families will be able to purchase a set number of tickets using an access code.  This number will be determined by number of participants and seating capacity.  For example, for the 2023 production families were able to purchase 10 tickets during the pre-sale.  This code is for cast members' immediate families and not to be shared.

Do you film the performances?

Dancers will receive a digital download of the performances in late January.  This is included in the cost of participation.

The Debbie Allen Dance Academy in association with the Annenberg Foundation and the Rhimes Family Foundation presents Debbie Allen's Hot Chocolate Nutcracker,  at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center.

Debbie Allen has taken the ballet classic and given it fresh, new context with lively characters, new music by industry legends, diverse choreography, spectacular aerial arts and state-of-the-art projection to create an immersive, vibrant and memorable theater experience for all ages. The Hot Chocolate Nutcracker is an international sensation made evergreen by the Netflix documentary, "Dance Dreams." Don't miss this reimagined holiday tradition.

Pre-Performance Events:

Fairy Queen Tea - Join us before each matinee for a beautiful catered tea, hot cocoa bar, cast member meet/greet, storytelling, surprise guests, themed photo opp and a giveaway for the Fairy Queen's custom-designed, artisan pointe shoes. 

Girl Scout Patch Workshop  - Created for individual Scouts and Troops of GSGLA. Scouts earn a custom Hot Chocolate Nutcracker patch (plus meet criteria towards GS badges and Journeys) while learning about performing arts, aerial arts, costuming, pantomime, and more. A perfect holiday outing for Daisies, Brownies, Juniors and Cadettes. Workshop is paired with special Girl Scout show ticketing.

Fairy Queen Tea and Girl Scout Patch Workshop are separate ticketed events.

Tea and Workshop offered prior to Sat/Sun matinees only.

Public performances will be presented December 5 - December 8, 2024, with proceeds benefiting the students of the Debbie Allen Dance Academy. School performances will take place Tuesday through Friday, December 3rd - 6th.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures has unveiled a killer lineup of programming for fall 2024, including in-person appearances from Rita Moreno , Sophia Loren , Werner Herzog and more, as well as exciting new screening events and a special free admission day on September 29 for the museum’s third anniversary.

Also, on September 14, the Museum will present “American Fiction”: A Conversation with Cord Jefferson and Dr. Patricia Hill Collins , followed by a screening of the Oscar-winning movie. For Halloween, there will be Monster Mash , a day on October 26 devoted to the special effects and makeup behind classic Universal monsters, culminating in a screening of “The Creature from the Black Lagoon.” And on November 3, there will be Godzilla-Thon! It’s a five-film screening of movies featuring the classic kaiju, in celebration of the 70th anniversary of the original “Gojira.” The five films shown will be “Gojira,” “Destroy All Monsters,” “Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster,” “Shin Godzilla,” and “Godzilla Minus One.” (Check out IndieWire’s ranking of every Godzilla movie from best to worst , and our review of “Godzilla Minus One.” )

There’s also a Wonders of Technicolor series running October 6-November 23 that accompanies the physical exhibit “Color in Motion: Chromatic Explorations of Cinema,” which also opens October 6. And a five-month exhibition presented by Getty opens the same day, called Cyberpunk: Envisioning Possible Futures Through Cinema as a part of PST ART: Art & Science Collide.

First Day of Competition Classes Fall 2024.

First Day of Recreational Classes Fall 2024

CDA will be closed Thursday, October 31st for Halloween. All classes will resume Friday, November 1st.

Each year Concord Dance Academy participates in this local event, ringing in the Holiday Season for local residents.  Members of our Competition Team are required to participate, and should notify the office early in the season if they have any conflict.

All members of the CDA community may participate.  Dress is a blue CDA jacket, or black CDA t-shirt with black bottoms, comfortable and warm shoes, a red Santa hat and red gloves.  Warm layers are strongly encouraged.  Members of the kick line will wear their costumes and perform during the parade.  The kick line group as well as our youngest dancers will have transportation during the parade and all others will walk.  We will be looking for several adult volunteers to assist in decorating our “float” and accompanying the students on the route.

CDA will be CLOSED for all classes and rehearsals from Wednesday, November 27th through Sunday, December 1st. We hope all our families have a safe and enjoyable Thanksgiving!
