Classics special: check out Fabian Cancellara’s 2016 Trek Domane SLR
First Published Feb 27, 2024
It’s Strade Bianche this weekend, so tonight we’re looking back at one of the bikes raced by the most successful Classics riders of modern times, Fabian Cancellara. This is the Trek Domane that Spartacus rode for Paris-Roubaix in 2016, his final year of racing. He might not have won the Hell of the North that year (he won it on three previous occasions), but he did take his third Strade Bianche win on the brand new (at the time) Trek Domane SLR.
> New Trek Domane breaks cover at Strade Bianche
Trek officially launched the 2016 Domane SLR just before Paris-Roubaix 2016, although Cancellara had already been riding it for ages, having been involved in its development prior to racing.
The bike featured a new adjustable rear IsoSpeed decoupler that, Trek said, allowed you to dial in the level of compliance: the amount the seat tube – and therefore the saddle – would move to smooth over bumps in the road and reduce vibration. Trek said you could have the same level of stiffness as its Madone road bike, or 14% more compliance than the previous-generation Domane.
The bike featured a two-part seat tube, the different sections connected via the IsoSpeed decoupler with a lower bolted joint. A slider adjusted the space between the two halves of the tube, allowing the seat mast to deflect rearwards.
Adjustment was simple enough; a single bolt needed to be loosened to adjust a slider. While most members of the Trek Segafredo team had the slider set to the lowest, maximum deflection setting, Cancellara took the middle ground.
This iteration of the Domane SLR also featured front IsoSpeed – a decoupler that allowed the steerer tube to move back and forth, resulting in a claimed 10% increase in vertical compliance.
Modern Trek Domanes don’t have front IsoSpeed and the rear design isn’t adjustable, although today's models are considerably lighter.
> Trek launches new, lighter Domane endurance road bike and ditches front IsoSpeed system
Cancellara preferred Shimano’s mechanical Dura-Ace to the electronic Di2 components that most of the peloton, including his teammates, were using. Old school! Some riders stuck with mechanical shifting because they preferred the lever feel. It was harder to shift accidentally in the wrong direction, especially over the cobbles when normal riding goes out the window.
Cancellara went with a 53t outer chainring and a 44t inner ring for the mostly flat Paris-Roubaix course. Oh, and rim brakes were the order of the day, naturally.
A 1.86m-tall rider, Cancellara liked a wide handlebar – in this case, a 44cm aluminium Bontrager bar. He liked a long reach, too, with a 140mm Bontrager carbon stem with one spacer above and below. The Domane SLR that Cancellara rode was built to a Pro Endurance Geometry, which meant a shorter head tube than standard Domane bikes, along with a longer wheelbase.
Cancellara’s saddle preference was a Bontrager Team Issue – a classic shape, with generous padding.
Like most of Cancellara’s Treks, this Domane SLR had a special paint job. You get that kind of thing when you’re a cycling superstar. The main feature of this one was a top tube decorated with the details of his numerous Paris-Roubaix wins and podium finishes, and a textured finish, representing the cobbles.
Most riders in the race were using 27mm, 28mm or 30mm tyres. Cancellara and the entire Trek Segafredo team rolled on Bontrager Aeolus 5 wheels, all fitted with 27mm FMB tubulars.

Trek Domane 2013

Trek Domane is the carbon endurance road bike, this means it’s good for bad road surfaces, cobbled roads, etc. It is specifically designed for the cobbled classics in Europe. It has a big frame, uses a unique IsoSpeed Decoupler at the seat tube/top tube junction to separate the rider from bumps on the road. Here are the Trek Domane 2013 models.

Upfront, the IsoSpeed fork uses thinner legs with rearward-set dropouts to absorb vibrations and bumps without sacrificing steering precision. Combined, they do an admirable job of smoothing out rough roads, cobbles, gravel paths and cracks in the pavement. Trek Domane is a true “race winner”. UCI World Tour Team RadioShack-Nissan use Domane bikes in the cobbled spring classics in Europe.
Cobbled classics specialist Fabian Cancellara won Montepaschi Strade Bianche 2012 edition with a Trek Domane 6 series bike.

Trek make fabian cancellara’s domane available to public, domane classics edition features aggressive 'pro endurance geometry'.
Trek have made the Domane Classics Edition frame ridden by Fabian Cancellara available to the paying public.
The American firm launched the Domane, which features an innovative ‘IsoSpeed’ decoupler to isolate the seattube and toptube and thereby improve comfort, in March 2012 , but until now the ‘Pro Endurance Geometry’ has only been available to Cancellara and his team-mates.
A lower headtube and a longer toptube (which also increases the wheelbase) help Cancellara achieve his preferred riding position. By way of comparison, a 56cm Classics Edition frame has a short 12cm headtube and 56.2cm effective toptube, while the equivalent size in the Domane 6.9 has a 17.5cm headtube and 55.4cm toptube.
The Classics Edition frame also has additional tyre clearance and a one-piece steel derailleur hanger/dropout which Trek say results in more precise and durable shifting on rough roads. The frame also loses the invisible mudguard mounts that feature elsewhere in the Domane range.
“I believe it’s very cool that Trek makes ‘my’ bike available to consumers,” said three-time Paris-Roubaix winner Cancellara, who worked with Trek to develop the Domane.
“It’s a very special bike for me. Together Trek and I have put a lot of time and energy in the development of the Domane and I’m happy that it’s out there now.”
The Domane Classics Edition will only be available as a complete bike build, in Trek team colours with Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 and Bontrager Aeolus 3 D3 wheels wrapped in 25mm Bontrager R4 Hard-Case Lite tyres for £8,800, or through Trek’s Project One customisation programme.
“This is a bike that riders have asked us about since we first unveiled the bike in 2012 and it’s really exciting to be able to offer it as a custom option with Project One,” said Trek’s road brand manager Michael Mayer.
The Domane range now extends from the Classics Edition to the £1,000 Domane 2.0, based around an aluminium frame.

Revealed: The remarkable technologies on Cancellara's Flanders Trek Domane SLR
Textured cobbles, palmarés on the top tube, with front and rear adjustable IsoSpeed
Ben Delaney / Immediate Media
Ben Delaney
Fabian Cancellara raced his final Tour of Flanders Sunday aboard a special Trek Domane SLR. The just-announced Domane SLR sports two radically new technologies — front IsoSpeed and adjustable rear IsoSpeed — and Cancellara's race bike also has some 3D graphics celebrating his accomplishments at Belgium's biggest race.
Cancellara has been instrumental in the formation of the Domane line of bikes from the beginning, working with Trek on testing prototypes, riding instrumented bikes, giving feedback and of course handily delivering as a marketing icon for the endurance machine.
- Trek Domane SLR review (first ride)
"My wife would not like when I say, it’s like the third baby, the Domane," Cancellara said on the day after the Tour of Flanders, where he placed second to Peter Sagan.
Cancellara regularly made the podium at Ronde van Vlaanderen
Cancellara first raced the bike at Strade Bianche, which he won for the third time. Although many noticed the new bike , neither Trek nor Cancellara would talk about it until the day after the Tour of Flanders at the bike's official launch in Kortrijk, Belgium.
There are two new and remarkable technologies on the new Domane SLR. One, the rear IsoSpeed — first introduced with the original Domane where the seat tube flexes on a pivot at the top tube/chainstay junction — is now adjustable in its range of flex. The split seat tube has an adjustment tab that slides up and down, changing the compliance characteristics from Madone-like stiffness to more plush than the current Domane. To adjust this, you loosen the bottle bottle cage bolt, adjust the slider, then retighten the bolt. Cancellara chose to run his with the slider set in the middle.
The rear IsoSpeed is now adjustable in its seat tube flex, with the black tab just behind and above the bottle cage
The second is the front IsoSpeed, where the steerer tube is allowed to bow fore and aft inside the head tube. Pivot bolts on either side keep laterally rigidity identical to a standard bike, Trek says.

Pro bike: Fabian Cancellara's Trek Domane 6-Series Maillot Jaune
RadioShack-Nissan rider's yellow Trek for Tour stage 1
This article originally published on BikeRadar
Swiss powerhouse Fabian Cancellara (Radioshack-Nissan) rumbled to victory in Saturday's prologue, thus becoming the first rider in this year's Tour de France to don the maillot jaune. In keeping with recent traditions, Cancellara was covered in yellow from head to toe for Stage 1, including his Trek Domane 6-Series bicycle.
Even without the bright yellow livery, Cancellara's machine is still unique in that he's running a Domane model instead of the new Madone used by his teammates. Trek intends the Domane as its 'endurance' machine for the cobbled classics with dedicated features such as detuned handling, a much lower bottom bracket, and the unique IsoSpeed 'decoupler' pivot at the seat tube-top tube junction that allows for an extraordinary amount of saddle movement.
This year's Tour de France tarmac obviously won't match the brutality of Paris-Roubaix's cobblestones but since Cancellara was intimately involved with the development of the Domane and has spent much of the early season on it (he won Strade Bianche on one in early March), he's decided to stick with it for now. It's only marginally heavier than the Madone and virtually identical in terms of drivetrain efficiency so in reality, Cancellara isn't putting himself at an advantage regardless.
Consumers can purchase their own all-yellow Domane through Trek's Project One custom program but even then, it won't be quite the same chassis as what Cancellara rides. Team bikes feature special one-piece rear dropouts with non-replaceable derailleur hangers for improved shift accuracy and durability. Being a Radioshack-Nissan-Trek rider is also the only way to get a Domane with the lower, more aggressive 'pro-fit' front triangle, although Trek is obligated to release it to the public before the end of this calendar year.
Cancellara's build kit closely mirrors his everyday Domane, including a Shimano Dura-Ace 7900 mechanical group, SRM cranks, Schwalbe tires, Speedplay Zero pedals (ultralight Nanograms in this case), a Cane Creek headset, and Nokon cables and housing. The rest is filled out by Trek's Bontrager component arm: Aeolus 5 D3 50mm-deep carbon tubular wheels, a Race Lite Anatomic aluminum handlebar, Race XXX Lite molded carbon fiber stem, Team Issue saddle, and RXL carbon fiber bottle cages.
Cancellara's mechanics, Roger Theel, has snuck in a few subtle go-fast tweaks, though, such as the aftermarket derailleur pulleys and bottom bracket that's installed without the normal supplemental outer rubber seals. Ceramic bearings of some sort are a virtual guarantee, too.
