Amaranthe are a metal band hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden who formed in 2008. Since their debut, they have released three studio albums and are known for being one of the most exciting European metal bands to come along in years.

Formed by lead singer Jake E and guitarist/keyboardist Olof Mörck in 2008, the project really started to become the band we know today when E and Mörck decided that E wouldn't be the only lead singer in the group. After an extensive auditioning process they recruited a further two lead singers to compliment E, Elize Ryd, who would handle the clean, operatic vocals and Andreas Solveström, who became their extreme metal vocalist. E himself would handle the hard rock style clean vocals and and after they found a rhythm section in the form of Johan Andreassen (bass) and Morten Løwe Sørensen (drums), they took the name Avalanche and began demoing what would later become their debut EP “Leave Everything Behind”. However, due to legal issues, the band were forced to change their name in early 2009 when they signed their first record deal with Spinefarm Records.

Switching to Amaranthe, the band released “Leave Everything Behind” in February of the same year, and began their first headline tour shortly afterwards. 2011 saw the release of their self-titled debut album and ever since then, their esoteric mix of metalcore and dance music has made them a cult band beloved all over the world, and also a huge crossover success in their native Sweden, with two gold records to their name in the form of their 2011 singles “Hunger”, and “Amaranthine”. They've also made some serious headway in the USA, with their 2014 album “Massive Addictive” topping the Billboard Heatseekers Chart in it's first week of release. The band have even managed to weather the departure of Solveström, who left the group in 2013 and was replaced by Henrik Englund soon afterwards. Clearly this is a band with too much momentum to be stopped now, and for that, they come highly recommended.

Live reviews

Amaranthe seems to be Sweden’s answer to both pop music and rock. Somehow this awesome band has managed to find a middle-ground for both genres in their melodic, beat heavy, power metal, and it’s a middle-ground totally works. Elize Ryd, the band’s lead singer, has described their style as melodical “dance-metal.” I don’t know if this totally sums up everything Amaranthe has been doing with their music since 2008, but I do know that you have to see them live to really appreciate what they’re all about. I was lucky enough to see them perform in their home country last month and the knockout energy of their performance just blew me away. This band loves – LOVES – their fans. You can just tell that they want every single person watching them to have the time of their lives. They opened their set with Future on Hold, which set the right tone for the rest of the gig, and they totally killed it. There wasn’t a single person who wasn’t jumping up and down, totally wrapped up in the music, by the end of that opener. With the start of each new song, the six of them seemed more and more insistent on raising their game. By the time we got to the encore and they hit us with Nexus (they saved the best for last) I was totally exhausted. Experiencing them live is something I’ll never forget, and can’t wait to do again next year after they release their new album Massive Addictive this October.

Saw Amaranthe @ Ace of Spades in Sacramento with Butcher Babies and Lullwater. Jake was at home on paternity leave and the backup vocalist had to leave the tour, so they enlisted the help of John from Lullwater, Heidi from Butcher Babies, and a fan from Phoenix with Elize picking up some of Jake's lines as well. The show turned out awesome. The sound quality @ Ace of Spades was great. The Butcher Babies destroyed opening and Amaranthe put on one of the best shows I've seen. If you can get to any of these bands' shows, it will be worth it w/o question. Great venue as well.

Perfect venue for a flawless band. Amaranthe did not disappoint in either performance nor grace. They rocked a full hour and a half set with a besutiful four song encore and never once left the audience longing for more. Every sound echoed and the energy in the building was ecstatic. The band even stuck around to greet and take photos with fans with a smile and a laugh. Thank you, Amaranthe, for remaining so classy throughout even after days of touring and exhaustion. One of the best concert atmospheres and performances I've attended to date.

Amaranthe does not come often to Paris and their concert was sold out.

They played a mix of their best old songs and of their new album and they offered us a real good concert. It was a blast.

I would like also to mention in this review the excellent performance of the charm and the fury who did the first part of this incredible night !

This metalcore band deserves to be more famous in France since they were awesome !

These guys are absolutely amazing in concert. They bring so much energy to the stage and really love what they do. I've seen them live twice now and have loved both shows.

Watching three lead singers interact on stage is one of the best parts. Elize, Jake and Henrik (Olle Ekman filling in at this concert) have great interaction and make the show really fun to watch.

Write your review of Amaranthe here... I was very impressed with what Amaranthe brought with their unique style and stage presence. All of the vocalists were great with their roles and the crowd was really into it. Everyone I spoke with had great things to say about there performance. They really connect with their fans and look forward to there return.

They were simply amazing! The two bands before them Santa Cruz and I Prevail also kicked some a$$. Brought a friend who never listen to them before and after their performance they had gained a fan. This is one band that are really worth it to see live. They did an encore which made my night. I hope they come back.

Väldigt bra konsert! Elise hördes inte riktigt då musiken överröstade henne men i övrigt var allt jättebra. Det var fel info om tider vid bokning, kunde vara bra med uppdatering i framtiden, fick vänta väldigt länge innan konserten.

The amaranthe concert was awesome 5 stars music and vocals, on the other hand the 4 opening acts were disappointing, the music was good but the vocals were horrible. Too all 4 bands I give 5 star for the music and 1 star for the vocals.

Finalxquest’s profile image

AMAZING!!! Even better than the first time I saw them. Henrik was unreal. Audio was going out here and there, but that was the venues fault. CANNOT WAIT for them to come back to Vegas again. Too much fun every time they're here.

AMARANTHE 's third album, "Massive Addictive" , was released on October 21, 2014 via Spinefarm Records . The CD was tracked at Hansen Studios in Ribe, Denmark with producer Jacob Hansen ( VOLBEAT , EPICA ) at the helm.

In a recent interview with The Grim Tower , AMARANTHE drummer Morten Løwe Sørensen stated about "Massive Addictive" : "While other songs are more metal than anything else we have done, it's not as fast paced as our previous two albums, and a bit more groovy. Every song is distinctively different from the others, but it's not a concept album this time like on previous albums. Somehow I almost see the two first albums as part of a whole, while 'Massive Addictive' is a step in a little bit of a different direction maybe… You can easily hear that this is AMARANTHE , but it does contain new elements and a different approach than our earlier material."

Regarding the songwriting and recording process for "Massive Addictive" , Morten said: "We recorded with producer Jacob Hansen , as we have on our previous albums, but we wanted a bit of a different production this time. The songs this time leave more room for everything to be heard, since it's not quite as hectic as before. So we could go for a bigger and more open sound. Everything went pretty smooth, actually, even though we had been touring all the time and actually had to write a big part of the album either on the road or in the studio while recording. We had a pretty clear vision of how we wanted the album to turn out, but also left room for a lot of creativity in the moment. All in all, it has been a pretty rewarding experience this time."

Triumphs, tragedies, rebirths and upheavals… Life is often defined by its moments of revelation. 15 years into a career that has seen them become one of metal’s most ruthlessly individual and uplifting bands, AMARANTHE are about to make their most definitive and revealing move. Three years on from the widely acclaimed Manifest, Sweden’s masters of thunderous, melodic futurism are about to unveil The Catalyst.

Formed in 2008, AMARANTHE walked their own unique path from the start. With a sound that combined the sharpest, cutting edges of melodic metal, electronic rock and razor-sharp pop, their impact was immediate and undeniable. Kicking off with their self-titled debut in 2011, the Swedes blazed a trail through the European metal scene and beyond, swiftly establishing themselves as a dazzling one-off, not least due to the unprecedented triple vocal attack that paired clean tones with exquisite melodic sensibilities and feral growls. Over the next few years, the sextet steadily grew in stature, releasing a series of praised studio records that jabbed persistently at the boundaries of modern metal.

From 2013’s fiery The Nexus and its immaculate follow-up Massive Addictive , through to the experimental bravery of 2016’s Maximalism and 2018’s Helix (which saw the arrival of Dynazty vocalist Nils Molin, replacing the departing Jake E ), AMARANTHE have been an unwavering breath of invigorating fresh air, renowned for absurdly catchy and crushing pop-metal anthems and for euphoric, eye-popping live performances all over the globe.

Fast forward to 2023, and change is in the air. Pieced together over the last three years, The Catalyst is a self-evident breakthrough moment, and the most exhilarating and idiosyncratic record AMARANTHE have ever made.

One major contributory factor to this impressive forward stride is the arrival of AMARANTHE’s latest new member. Slotting in neatly alongside Elize Ryd and Nils Molin is the band’s new master of growls, Mikael Sehlin.

Now fully installed as the sixth piece of the AMARANTHE jigsaw – alongside Olof Mörck, Elize Ryd, Nils Molin, bassist Johan Andreasson and drummer Morten Løwe Sørensen – Mikael Sehlin can be heard revelling in his new creative partnerships on The Catalyst .

Due for release early in 2024, The Catalyst fully delivers on the promise of its title. AMARANTHE have always been original thinkers and maverick songwriters, but never with as much power and panache as they demonstrate this time around. Both their finest album to date and a collection of songs that deftly redefine every aspect of the Swedes’ sound, The Catalyst is destined to propel its creators ever higher up the modern metal ladder. For Olof Mörck, it represents the culmination of 15 years of hard work and the breathless pursuit of a wholly original musical vision. Change is inevitable. Victory is assured.

Kamala Harris, Hoping to Build Momentum, Plans Battleground State Tour Next Week

After accepting the nomination, Ms. Harris was flying back to Washington on Friday for a weekend respite before returning to the campaign trail next week.

By Reid J. Epstein and Katie Rogers

Reid J. Epstein and Katie Rogers cover the Kamala Harris presidential campaign. They reported from Chicago.

Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign for president is entering a new phase, shifting from a 33-day sprint to the convention to something more familiar: Preparing for a debate and pivoting to getting out the vote.

On Friday afternoon, Ms. Harris plans to fly back from Chicago to Washington, where she will spend the weekend decompressing from the mind-spinning turn of events that led to her accepting the Democratic nomination for president on Thursday night.

She will begin preparing for what will be her first national interview — which she has said will take place by the end of August — and for the Sept. 10 debate with Donald J. Trump, according to campaign officials briefed on her plans who were not authorized to reveal them before they are formally announced.

The officials said Ms. Harris will return to the campaign trail next week with events in multiple battleground states, where she will aim to extend the enthusiasm generated at this week’s convention in Chicago.

Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, her running mate who was plucked from relative political obscurity 17 days ago, will return to his state before heading back on the campaign trail next week.

Presidential candidates typically come out of their conventions trying to build momentum with bus tours or rallies. Ms. Harris’s choice to delay the traditional barnstorming reflects the supercharged pace of the last few weeks and the changed nature of modern campaigns, where social media posts can be as important as speeches. It also is evidence of a shift from a sprint to more of a middle-distance effort that requires endurance and speed in equal measures.

“Campaigns often do barnstorm, but this has been such a compressed schedule for her and she has a debate in 17 days,” said David Axelrod, the veteran Democratic strategist who worked on Barack Obama’s campaigns. “A little downtime and maybe even prep would make sense. As we just saw they have a plethora of first-rate surrogates who can and should be deployed when she is not.”

While Mr. Obama in 2012 left his re-election convention in Charlotte, N.C., for a swing through battleground states including Iowa and Florida — where he was memorably lifted into the air by a pizza proprietor — campaigns today rely less on the local media coverage generated by stumping across the country.

Campaigns now seek to reach voters as much on social media apps as in person, a reality that was evident in how the Democratic National Convention gave status to influencers willing to cheer for Ms. Harris and spread the campaign’s message that was equal to or better than what it gave the traditional press corps at the United Center.

Ms. Harris’s self-imposed deadline for a national interview, next Saturday, presents the next hurdle for Ms. Harris. It will be a break from the rhythm of stadium rallies she has hosted since she named Mr. Walz her running mate.

Mr. Trump does not have a robust campaign schedule in the coming days either.

The Republican nominee sought to divert attention to himself during the Democratic National Convention, holding an event each day in a different battleground state. Mr. Trump plans on Friday to cap the week’s events in Las Vegas and in Arizona, where his campaign has teased a special guest that many expect to be Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who suspended his independent campaign for president on Friday and endorsed Mr. Trump.

Mr. Trump is then expected to spend the weekend at his golf club in Sterling, Va., according to two people familiar with his plans. But he does not have any public events scheduled until Monday, when he will address the National Guard Association of the United States in Detroit.

“President Trump will be working nonstop like he always does and doing an interview this weekend, which is one more interview than Kamala has done in 33 days,” said Karoline Leavitt, a spokeswoman for the Trump campaign.

Mr. Trump did not remain quiet after his convention. Two days after it ended in Milwaukee, he traveled to Michigan for his first joint rally with his newly crowned running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio.
