African lion safari.
Just a half-hour drive northwest of Hamilton, you'll find a mirror image of a traditional zoo: At the African Lion Safari, visitors remain caged in their cars or in a tour bus while the animals roam wild and free. The 300-hectare (741-acre) wildlife park contains rhinos, cheetahs, lions, tigers, giraffes, zebras, vultures, and many other species. In addition to the safari, the cost of admission covers other attractions, like the cruise aboard the African Queen, during which a tour guide will take you around the lake and point out local inhabitants like spider monkeys, crested macaques, and ring-tailed lemurs. A train will take you through a forest populated by snapping turtles, among other wildlife.
The park has several baby Asian elephants, and the elephant-bathing event, which occurs daily, will particularly fascinate the kids. The Pets' Corner is filled with frisky otters and pot-bellied pigs. There are several play areas for children as well, including the Misumu Bay water park (bring bathing suits!).

Nestled just outside of Hamilton, African Lion Safari offers an immersive experience that brings you face-to-face with some of the world’s most magnificent creatures. This drive-through wildlife park invites you to explore the realm of the wild from the comfort of your own vehicle. In this article, we'll dive into what makes African Lion Safari a must-visit for families, wildlife enthusiasts, and adventure seekers alike.
Website: African Lion Safari - Canada's Original Safari Adventure™
Address: 1386 Cooper Rd, Cambridge, ON N1R 5S2
Journey Into the Wild
African Lion Safari, Canada's original safari adventure, has been a leader in conservation and education for over 50 years. The park spans over 740 acres and is home to over 1,000 exotic birds and animals that roam freely in large Game Reserves. The experience is designed to give visitors an up-close look at wildlife in a setting that closely resembles their natural habitats.
The Drive-Through Experience
The main attraction is the safari's self-drive tour. As you navigate through the spacious reserves, you'll encounter a variety of animals that are native to Africa and other parts of the world. Watch as a pride of majestic lions bask in the sun, observe herds of zebras and giraffes grazing, and be amazed by the sheer size of the rhinos and elephants that might just saunter up to your vehicle.
The drive-through is laid out in a series of seven reserves, each one home to different species living together as they would in the wild. The experience allows you to move at your own pace, stopping to take photos and marvel at these creatures from a safe distance.
Beyond the Drive-Through
Once you've completed your safari tour, the adventure continues with walking areas that provide a different perspective on wildlife. Watch a bird of prey demonstration, visit Parrot Paradise, or take a boat cruise around Water Safari Lake. For the little ones, Misumu Bay Wet Play is an interactive water adventure zone that offers a refreshing way to cool down on hot summer days.
Toddlers' Playground & Discovery Centre
The Toddlers' Playground & Discovery Centre is a family-friendly zone packed with educational activities and play areas designed to inspire young minds about wildlife conservation and the animal kingdom.
Conservation and Education
African Lion Safari is deeply committed to conservation, participating in various breeding programs for endangered species. The park's work has been recognized globally, leading to successful breeding of several species at risk, including the Asian elephant and cheetah.
Visitors of all ages can learn about these efforts through educational presentations and demonstrations. The park's staff includes knowledgeable zoologists and animal behaviorists who offer insights into the lives of the animals and the importance of wildlife conservation.
In the African Lion Safari, visitors can enjoy 7 reserves from sitting inside their vehicles.
1. Nairobi Sanctuary
The Nairobi Sanctuary offers a serene environment where visitors can observe gentle giraffes, towering elands, and playful baboons. This reserve mimics the African landscape, providing a peaceful retreat for both animals and guests alike.
2. Simba Lion Country
Dedicated to the king of the jungle, Simba Lion Country offers a thrilling experience as guests come face-to-face with majestic lions. This reserve is a powerful reminder of the beauty and raw power of one of Africa's most iconic predators.
3. Timbavati Lion Country
In the Timbavati Lion Reserve, the regal white lion takes center stage, a rare and awe-inspiring sight. This area provides a unique opportunity to observe these rare animals as they lounge and interact in their carefully crafted enclosure.

Check the Schedule : African Lion Safari operates seasonally, typically from May to October. Be sure to check the opening dates and hours before you plan your trip.
Vehicle Restrictions : Due to the nature of the experience, some vehicle restrictions apply. Convertibles, motorcycles, and soft-top vehicles are not allowed in the Game Reserves. Rental vehicles are available at the park.
Respect the Rules : For the safety of the animals and visitors, it's important to follow the park's rules. Keep your windows up and doors locked, and do not feed the animals.
Stay Hydrated : Bring plenty of water, especially if you're visiting on a hot day. Staying hydrated is key to enjoying your adventure.
Pack a Lunch : While there are dining options available in the park, you can also bring your own picnic to enjoy in designated areas.
African Lion Safari provides a unique experience that is both thrilling and enlightening. It's a chance to see wildlife in a new way and gain a greater appreciation for the natural world. Hamilton Halton Brant
Find your way to the Heart of Ontario
African Lion Safari with Toddlers
We love hearing about active families getting out and exploring all there is to see and do in Hamilton Halton Brant. Samantha, a mom to four-year-old twins, brought her family for an African Lion Safari adventure and chronicled their day on her delightful blog, Loving You Is Cherry Pie. Thanks for letting us share your post Samantha, and bring those darling girls for another outing in Hamilton Halton Brant soon!
WE WENT WILD AT AFRICAN LION SAFARI
SAMANTHA – I have lived in the Great Toronto Area all of my life (other than my time living in Kingston while going to law school), and specifically the Halton region for the past six years. We love Halton! It’s especially great to live near the Niagara Escarpment with all of the unique spots for outdoor adventure out here. Even though our girls are quite young, our family has already hiked, visited waterfalls, picked strawberries and more. When we were offered the chance to visit African Lion Safari, we were very excited (we would have liked to try the Wake Up the Wild Adventure; however, children must be at least 8 years old). If you don’t know it, African Lion Safari is a drive through wildlife park located in Hamilton, Ontario dedicated to the conservation of declining wildlife species.
The day of our visit to African Lion Safari started with intense thunderstorms (or as Alexa likes to say, “hunter storms”) and we weren’t sure if we could visit as planned. We took a risk and made the 40 minute drive, and by the time we arrived, the clouds cleared and later the sun came out. It was the perfect weather for an outdoor adventure.
Our first stop was the 9km drive-through game reserve. Despite initially planning to take the Safari Tour Bus, we changed our minds at the park and drove through in our minivan to get up close and personal with the animals. And that we did. Shortly after entering we saw the lions and I can’t deny that I got nervous when this guy (or girl, I’m not sure?) came within a few feet of my window. He was just looking for some shade under the tree but for a second I was a little wary.
The rest of the drive was just as exciting as we got to see so many different kinds of animals. The girls really were in awe of the animals roaming around out there.
After parking our car, we walked to the elephant area and got a front row spot for the elephant swim. Again, they came so close!
We then walked around and checked out the grounds, rode the ponies and had sno-kones… once the girls saw the Misumu Bay Wet Play Area they were unstoppable. They had an absolute blast here and could have stayed there all day going down the slides.
Once we were done there, we climbed aboard the Nature Boy Scenic Railyway Tour. It was so picturesque to travel by train through the forest with my little family. By the time we left the train, tiredness started to set in and we had to abandon our plan to ride the African Queen Boat Cruise unfortunately. It’s definitely something I would want to try next time but we had to make the decision to end our adventure as we could sense our girls were so tired they were bordering on meltdown. They slept the entire way home and another hour once we got home, which is to say that they had a fantastic time. We all did, it was a great family adventure!

Africa Safari trip 2025: Hilary Barry to host Viva Expeditions trip
Hilary Barry will be a host on the Viva Expeditions Africa by Rail tour in August 2025. Photo / Supplied
Kiwis eager to embark on a 10-day Africa safari can join television presenter Hilary Barry in August 2025
To see a giant lion prowling around the African jungle is one thing. To have the experience narrated by beloved television presenter and self-described “lippy suburban mother of two” Hilary Barry is another thing entirely.
It’s something 72 Kiwis can experience in August 2025, when Barry sets off on a 10-day luxury rail trip with New Zealand travel company Viva Expeditions.
“It’s always been a dream of mine to experience the stunning landscapes and amazing wildlife up close,” said Barry, who said it would be an “absolute thrill” to see a lion in the wild.
The famous broadcaster won’t just be there to snap photos of the big cats; she’ll also be the official host for guests on the trip around South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The Africa itinerary includes stops at Kruger National Park, where travellers can spot the “Big Five”′ animals, a private game reserve, Hwange National Park, and the world-famous Victoria Falls.
Those who prefer the comforts of home or a hotel over roughing it in the jungle have nothing to fear; the trip will take place on the Rovos Rail, one of the world’s most luxurious vintage trains.
While Barry has been known to inspire viewers (and infuriate others) with her fashion choices on television, Barry told the Herald she’ll be taking a practical approach to her outfits for the trip.
“Definitely nothing off the shoulder. I don’t want to be mistaken for a wildebeest and end up on the menu of an apex predator,” she joked. “That said, I think I could rock a safari suit”.
Barry has travelled to Africa several times but this will be the first time she goes as a holiday-maker rather than a reporter.
“I had the opportunity to travel across Kenya to the northern border with Somalia, home to the world’s largest refugee camp at Dadaab,” she said, adding that the team reported on the humanitarian crisis as people fled the violence of Al-Shabaab militants in Somalia.
Barry continues to be a vocal advocate for justice and social issues however she is “absolutely thrilled” to visit the continent as a tourist on August 28 with Viva Expeditions.
If you’re still looking to tick “safari” off your bucket list, there are few ways more glamorous or unique than doing it on an old-school luxury train with Barry beside you.
This isn’t the first time Viva Expeditions has recruited a household name to host a trip. In 2023, former New Zealand Prime Minister, Sir John Key led a 13-day cruise to Antarctica.
The tactic was a “resounding success” according to Viva Managing Director Rachel Williams, and the team were excited to do something similar for the Africa by Rail tour.
“Hilary Barry is such a warm and friendly person, and her adventurous spirit and love for storytelling make her the perfect travel companion for an ‘Africa By Rail’ journey,” Williams added.
Tickets for the tour start at $16,066 per person, with 72 spots available.

Unique nature of Astrakhan oblast
2 Comments · Posted by Sergei Rzhevsky in Nature , Photos , Regions
The nature of Astrakhan region is unique for Russia. Nowhere else in the country will you be able to find a territory composed of semi-deserts and deserts, where camels live, and the most famous Russian river Volga carries its waters.
Astrakhan oblast is located in the south-east of the East European Plain. The region is situated in the Caspian lowland where the Volga River flows into the Caspian Sea. The region stretches over 400 km in the form of a narrow stripe. Photos by GeoSerzh
